Hi kids!

Do you like to play video games? In one of my favourite video games, the player is sent out on a quest to help defend her imaginary world. She journeys through the jungle, the Arctic, the ocean and even outer space to save her friends. Along the way, she meets new friends, faces tough challenges and battles for the win against enemies.

Did you know that Jesus sent His people on a special quest, too? After His Resurrection, He returned to the disciples and left them with an important task: go out into the world and teach them about God and how much He loves them.

So next time you are playing video games, you can be reminded of the job Jesus gave us—to share God’s love with the world.

The Great Commission

After Jesus had been raised from the dead, the 11 disciples went to a mountain in Galilee where Jesus had told them to go. There, they saw Him and worshipped Him, but some doubted.

Jesus went to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me. Go and tell people all over the world to believe in Me so they can become disciples, too. Baptize them and wipe their sins away in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach them to obey everything I have commanded.”

Then Jesus reminded them, “Surely, I am with you always, until the very end of the age.”

Hi kids!

In our cities, we have firefighters that we can call on to help us out when we’re in danger. Sometimes our local firefighters stop by our schools to show us their cool (and very heavy) equipment, and to teach us all about fire safety and what to do if we ever experience a fire—stop, drop and roll!

It’s good to know that we can trust firefighters to help us in the case of a fire. Like firefighters, God sends the Holy Spirit to help us when we’re in need. Whether we are scared, afraid, sad or just lonely, the Lord is with us and will fill us with peace and joy.

In this issue of Just for Kids, you will read about a day called “Pentecost,” when God sent the Holy Spirit to give a message to the disciples.

The fastest time recorded for a firefighter to get dressed is 27 seconds.

Fire trucks can pump out up to 8,000 litres of water in just one minute. One bathtub holds only 300 litres!

God Sends His Spirit Acts 2:1-41

After Jesus went back to heaven, His disciples were all together in Jerusalem. Without warning, there was a sound like a strong wind—it filled the whole building. Then, the disciples saw what looked like fire on top of their heads, and they were filled with the Holy Spirit. They started telling people the good news about Jesus.

Many people came when they heard the sound, and some thought the disciples were acting funny. “What does this mean?” they asked.

One disciple, Peter, stood up and told them all about Jesus—His life, His death and His Resurrection—and he urged them to become followers of Jesus, too. “Long ago God planned that Jesus would be handed over to you,” he explained. “All of you must turn away from your sins and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then your sins will be forgiven.”

That day, about 3,000 people became Christians!

One time, my sister broke her ankle. She went to the hospital where the doctors and nurses took care of her. They took X-rays, put her ankle in a cast and gave her crutches to help her walk while she healed. When we are sick or hurt, we know we can go to the doctor for help.

In this issue of Just for Kids, you will read about a man who could not walk, but with God, he was healed. The man could walk and jump again. Some people didn’t understand why—he didn’t have a cast or crutches. It was a miracle.

But Peter and John knew that it was God’s power that healed him. They were so confident, they told everybody about it. Read this week’s Bible story to learn what happened to Peter and John.

Peter and John at the Sanhedrin Acts 3:1-4:21

One day, Peter and John walked together to the temple. Outside, they saw a man who was unable to walk. The man begged them for money, but instead, Peter said to him: “I do not have silver or gold, but I have something else. In the name of Jesus Christ, walk.”

Peter helped the man stand. His feet and ankles were healed. Then, the man went with them into the temple courtyards, walking, jumping and praising God. The people in the temple saw him and were amazed. “In the name of Jesus, this man has been made strong,” said Peter.

—Hebrews 13:6

What does this mean?

This Bible verse tells us that the Lord is with us. He is on our side and He helps us when we need Him. Like Peter and John, we do not need to be afraid. We do not need to worry about what other people think about us or do to us. We can be confident in God.

Peter and John were so excited about God’s power, they told everyone to believe in Him and turn to God to wipe away their sins.

But this made the religious leaders of the temple angry. They arrested Peter and John and put them in jail. The next day, the rulers and elders of Jerusalem had Peter and John brought to them, and they questioned how they healed the man. “It is by the name of Jesus Christ, whom you crucified and God raised from the dead, that this man is healed,” Peter told them.

The rulers saw the courage of Peter and John, and they knew that everyone had seen the healed man. Many people praised God because of this. “What can we do?” asked the rulers. “Everybody in Jerusalem knows this miracle is true.” So, the rulers let Peter and John go.

So we can say boldly, “The Lord helps me. I will not be afraid. What can mere human beings do to me?”

Hi kids!

Do you have friends who live far away? Maybe they go to another school, live in a different city, or even a different country!

In The Salvation Army, we have Salvationist friends all over the world— in 133 countries, to be exact. One of those countries is Bermuda.

Bermuda is an island located in the North Atlantic Ocean. It is also a key part of The Salvation Army’s Canada and Bermuda Territory. There are many beautiful beaches, friendly people and interesting wildlife such as sea turtles and humpback whales.

In this issue of Just for Kids, you will read about Bermuda Day which is celebrated every year in May. You will also find some fun facts to learn more about our Bermudian friends.

Bermuda Day is an island tradition that goes back 44 years. It celebrates the warming temperature, marking the first day of the year that Bermudians tend to go back into the water after the winter. It also marks the first day that people will start wearing Bermuda shorts to work! A parade is held each year in the capital, Hamilton, with a race, dancers and colourful floats.
