Hi kids! Have you ever been on a field trip to a zoo? At the zoo, there are usually a variety of animals from many parts of the world. You might start your day by seeing an enormous African elephant taking a muddy bath, then further along come across a tiny, colourful Amazonian frog jumping off a leaf. Your day may end by seeing a Canadian beaver swim through marshy water. These animals are all very different, but they have one thing in common. Their great-great-great-great-grandma and greatgreat-great-great-grandpa were created at the beginning of time by God. The animals you can see at a zoo are just a few of the thousands of creatures of all shapes, sizes and colours that inhabit our planet, showing that there is no limit to God’s creativity! Read the Bible story to find out more about the creation story in this issue of Just for Kids.

hen God created the world, it didn’t have any shape, and it was dark. Then God spoke. He said, “Let there be light.” And daylight appeared. God gave the land its form. He made the sun, the moon and the stars.

When everything on the earth was ready, God made the animals. He made some to live on the land, others to swim in the water and more to fly in the air. Then God made a human being and breathed life into him. God named the human Adam, and gave him a beautiful garden to live in. God gave Adam a job to do. He told Adam to take care of his garden home and all of the animals that lived in it. Adam gave the animals names, just as God had named him. But Adam was a little lonely, so God made another human, a woman named Eve. Adam and Eve lived in the garden. They took care of it and spent time talking with God. Decorate the other half of the butterfly, then colour it!

Hi kids! The monarch butterfly is one of the most well-known butterflies in North America. Its distinct bright orange wings pop from the black border around them. But did you know that before a monarch butterfly can float around to show off its bright wings, it has to go through a four-stage lifecycle? First, it starts as a tiny egg. Then, it grows into a little caterpillar. Next, it forms a sparkly chrysalis. Finally, it bursts out as a beautiful butterfly! For the monarch to fly, it must go through a really big change. This process is called metamorphosis. In this issue of Just for Kids you will learn about how God changes us so that we can live out what God wants for our lives.

We Are God’s Creation Ephesians 2:1-10

efore God gave us a new life as a Christian, we were sinful. We didn’t listen to His plan for our life. We did whatever we wanted to. Because God loves us, He gave us a new life through His Son, Jesus, who died on the cross for our sins. Now, we belong to Jesus because of what He did for us. God did all this through His grace, which is giving a gift to someone even though they don’t deserve it. He gave us the gift of salvation. Since Christ lives in heaven, this means that we, too, have a place in heaven with Him. He also gave us a new plan for our life which we can do now that we have been saved. Verse 10 tells us that “Now we can do good works” which God has given us to do.

Have you ever played dress-up? It can be so much fun to pretend to be your favourite superhero or fairy-tale princess. One popular costume idea is to dress up as royalty. To dress up like a king or queen you might wear a blanket as a cape, a plastic or paper crown and colourful costume jewelry. You can even make a castle to rule from out of some chairs, pillows and blankets! Playing make believe is fun, but being a real king or queen comes with a lot of responsibility. In this issue of Just for Kids you’ll read about a real queen in the Bible, named Esther. Queen Esther was the wife of King Xerxes, who ruled over the kingdom of Persia. God used Esther for a special purpose, which you will read about in the Bible story. Just like Esther, God created you for a special purpose. Will you pray with me that God will show you your special purpose?

sther was the queen of Persia, wife of King Xerxes. One of the king’s helpers was a man named Haman. Haman had an evil plan. He tricked King Xerxes into making a law to kill all of the Jewish people. The king and Haman didn’t know that Queen Esther was Jewish. What can I do to save my people? Esther wondered. She wanted to talk to the king about the law, but she was afraid. Anyone who went to see the king without being invited could be killed—even the queen. Esther asked all of the other Jews to pray, and then she went to see the king. The king was happy to see her. She invited the king and Haman to dinner and asked the king to save her people. The king was angry. He asked, “Who would want to hurt my queen?” “It’s Haman,” Esther answered. The king had Haman taken away. Then the king let Esther write a new law to protect Jewish people. The Jews were saved! 33-8/15/20 Just for Kids is a Ready to Explore resource, published weekly by The Salvation Army, Canada and Bermuda, 2 Overlea Blvd, Toronto, ON, M4H 1P4. Hi kids! Have you ever participated in track and field at your school? If so, you might run in a relay race. In this type of race, you only get to run a part of the track. You carry a special stick known as a “baton” and pass it on to your teammate when you complete your share. The goal is to pass the baton as quickly as possible so the final runner in the team crosses the finish line before any other team. In order to win the race, you must rely on your entire team to run as fast as they can since you’re not allowed to run the whole distance yourself. In this issue of Just for Kids we find out about a man who could not walk. He had no choice but to rely on his friends to help him in a very important way. Read the Bible story to find out why God created us to work with others.

ne day Jesus was teaching. Some men came carrying a man who could not walk. They tried to take him into the house to place him in front of Jesus. They could not find a way to do this because of the crowd. So they went up on the roof. Then they lowered the man on his mat through the opening in the roof tiles, right in front of Jesus. Jesus spoke to the man who could not walk. “Get up. Take your mat and go home.” Right away, the man stood up in front of them. He took his mat and went home praising God. Everyone was amazed and gave praise to God.

Summer Shadow Match

Hi kids! Summer comes when the sun is closest to the earth. This is why all the snow melts and it gets very hot! With the sun shining so bright in the summer, we often have to protect ourselves from it. If we go to the beach, we wear sunblock, sunglasses and hats so we don’t get a sunburn. If you go to the beach in Bermuda, which is an island in the Atlantic Ocean, you will swim in saltwater. While it is very fun to swim in the ocean, you cannot drink ocean water because of how salty it is. In the Bible, Jesus uses the examples of light and salt to help us understand how we should act as His followers. Read the Bible story to find out more.

Salt and Light Matthew 5:13-16

O

ne day, Jesus saw a big crowd of people, so He went up on top of a mountain to teach them. His disciples came over, too, and sat around Him. In His lesson, He used two examples to help the people understand how they are to live as a follower of Jesus. First, He talked about “salt.” Next, He spoke about “light.” He told the people that salt is only good when it tastes salty or else it is not useful. He then went on to talk about light, telling the people that they are to be “the light of the world.” He said that no one lights a lamp only to hide it under a bowl, but rather puts it on a stand to have it shine for everyone in the house. He used these two examples to teach us that when people see us do good things it will bring glory to God.
