A PIVOTAL MOMENT
INSPIRE was a once-in-a-generation conference and congress for the ages.
F
or more than 140 years, The Salvation Army across Canada and Bermuda has been meeting people at their point of need, providing help and hope, spiritual and emotional care, and practical assistance during times of personal crisis and in response to natural disasters. Our motivation has never wavered, and yet it’s never been clearer as our vision is to be “An innovative partner, mobilized to share hope wherever there is hardship, building communities that are just and know the love of Jesus.” Throughout our history there have been important moments to come together—to pause, reflect, celebrate and recharge for the mission and ministry to which God has called us. Unique and varied territorial and international congresses and commissionings have taken place through the years in Toronto, Winnipeg, Vancouver, St. John’s, N.L., and London, England, and these have been special moments in the life of our organization where God has blessed and encouraged his people for mission. I truly believe that the INSPIRE Conference and Congress will long be remembered as a pivotal moment in time for The Salvation Army Canada and Bermuda Territory as together we emerged from the shell of the global pandemic and were renewed for mission. INSPIRE was a once-in-a-generation coming together of God’s people for worship, reflection, training and equipping, celebration and spiritual renewal. God used the plenary speakers and workshop presenters during the INSPIRE conference to refresh and equip officers, employees and volunteers for his mission. Conference attendees were encouraged to continue to meet the spiritual, emotional and practical needs of those who come through the doors of our churches, community and family services offices, and social mission programs daily across the territory. The Salvation Army has an important and unique role as the “hands and feet” of Christ in the 400 communities where we serve. It was also exciting to return to historic Massey Hall for the INSPIRE congress, a place of spiritual significance and poignant memories for Salvationists across Canada and Bermuda. It was a “homecoming” for many officers who were commissioned on 4

the storied platform of the 129-year-old building over the past 70 years. We engaged in powerful worship, celebrating the diversity of worship expressions across our territory, coupled with traditional elements, while engaging a cross-section of talented musicians, artists and speakers. It was wonderful to have General Brian and Commissioner Rosalie Peddle, then our international leaders, “come home” and share in ministry throughout the weekend, and it was especially moving to have our friends Commissioners Floyd and Tracey Tidd, then territorial leaders, present and participating given their significant health journey of late. God blessed and used our leaders for his honour and glory. As chair of the INSPIRE Conference and Congress Executive and Planning Committee, I was blessed, encouraged and indeed inspired by the spirit of collaboration, creativity and professionalism of the team members invited to co-create the INSPIRE events. It was truly a joy and blessing to work with Major Corinne Cameron and Major Doug Binner, congress and conference vice-chairs, as well as Lt-Colonel Wendy Waters, Lt-Colonel Neil Watt, Captain Jason Dockeray, Neil Leduke, Geoff Moulton, Heather Osmond and Glenn van Gulik who comprised the INSPIRE Executive Committee. A word of sincere thanks and appreciation to this team and all those they represent through the various working groups who helped make INSPIRE truly memorable. Thanks also to the internal communications, video and editorial teams who did outstanding work in telling the INSPIRE story leading up to and throughout the conference and congress, and to the Canada Bermuda Youth team who organized an outstanding program for our children, teens and young adults. A highlight of INSPIRE was the Canada Day events organized at Yonge-Dundas Square. Truly engaging and inspirational— congratulations! The INSPIRE Conference and Congress was all that and more. God blessed and inspired us through the moving of his Spirit, and it is my prayer that the Canada and Bermuda Territory will continue to reap the rich blessings from this experience for years to come.

INSPIRE CONFERENCE AND CONGRESS KICKS OFF IN TORONTO Participants gather on the first day to rejoice and renew friendships.
T
he mood was festive on Monday as more than 1,400 Salvation Army officers, their families, employees and friends gathered together at the Westin Harbour Castle in Toronto to celebrate the first day of the INSPIRE Conference and Congress. Salvationists had been arriving from all over the territory the night before, but the numbers steadily increased by late afternoon. Happy greetings and friendly conversations were the order of the day as people connected for the first territorial conference and congress in many years. Delegates gathered for a welcome banquet in the evening with Commissioners Floyd and Tracey Tidd, territorial commander and territorial president of women’s ministries, and Colonel Evie Diaz, chief secretary. “How we have anticipated this meeting,” Commissioner Floyd Tidd said to start off the proceedings, “anticipating what God wants to do during these days.” Commissioner Tidd gave the traditional Army salute to the crowd in response to their standing ovation over his ongoing health concerns and then thanked the congress organizers who had been working on the event, some for months, some for years, planning and preparing for the INSPIRE congress under the leadership of Lt-Colonel John Murray. After a wonderful supper, attendees were treated to a special performance of Skeleton Army, the new Salvation Army musical that had its Canadian premier at INSPIRE.

Performances of Skeleton Army, a captivating interactive musical that made its Canadian debut at INSPIRE, were staged throughout the week. With words and lyrics by Major Len Ballantine, leader of the Canadian Staff Songsters, Skeleton Army was originally conceived by Neil Leduke, territorial director of marketing and communications for the Canada and Bermuda Territory, based on a book by John Copeland and produced in collaboration with The Salvation Army U.S.A. East Arts Ministries Bureau. The musical is set in the East End of London in 1881 during the uprising of the Skeleton Army, a group opposing The Salvation Army’s presence on the streets. Skeleton Army stars Canadians Kyle Higgins as Charles Jeffries, leader of the Skeleton Army, and Kathryn Higgins in three roles: a Salvation Army officer; Martha, Jeffries’ wife; and Scarlet, a spirited barmaid. Kyle Higgins delivered a stirring performance, reminding the audience of the transformative power of Christ, while Kathryn Higgins adeptly transitioned between her three distinct roles. Skeleton Army invited audience members to participate in the performance—as gang members enjoying a “pint” at the Blind Beggar Pub or congregants singing in a watchnight service. The audience was deeply moved by the performances, joining in for a warm rendition of Jesus Saves! The production of Skeleton Army left a lasting impression on all those in attendance, telling an inspiring story of redemption, grace and the new life offered in Christ.

BASEBALL AND BLESSINGS Day Two of INSPIRE features Blue Jays, workshops and Dr. Reggie McNeal.
T
he excitement of INSPIRE continued on Tuesday as nearly 1,000 delegates converged on the Rogers Centre for Salvation Army Night at the Toronto Blue Jays. It was an atmosphere of joy and enthusiasm as Salvationists cheered on the Canadian home team. The game opened with The Star-Spangled Banner and O Canada as sung by the Canada and Bermuda Territory’s own Alexandria Venables, member of the Canadian Staff Songsters. Perhaps the most anticipated moment of the night was when General Brian Peddle, international leader of The Salvation Army, stood on the pitcher’s mound to throw the first pitch of the game, dressed in a custom “Peddle 21” jersey—a number chosen for his role as the 21st General of The Salvation Army. The day’s events started with a morning plenary session featuring a time of worship led by the music and arts ministries department. Video greetings were shared from the Honourable Elizabeth Dowdeswell, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, and Herbie Kuhn, voice of the Toronto Raptors and chaplain for the Toronto Raptors, Toronto Argonauts and York Regional Police. Guest speaker for the plenary session was Dr. Reggie McNeal, Christian thought leader and author of Kingdom Come. “If The Salvation Army did not already exist, God would have to create it,” he said as he encouraged those gathered to recapture the DNA of our movement. Throughout the remainder of the day, delegates attended a variety of workshops on topics as varied as business, children and youth, community engagement, corps health and social mission.

PEOPLE OF HOPE Day Three of INSPIRE features moments of praise, fellowship and learning.
T
he third day of INSPIRE began with INSPIRE Worship, a vibrant and uplifting service filled with lively music led by North Street Worship Team from North Street Citadel in Hamilton, Bermuda. Worship began with soulful renditions of My Hope Is Built on Nothing Less and Lord, We Give You the Glory, and the congregation joined in to sing If You’re Happy and You Know It, Say Amen. Colonel Evie Diaz, chief secretary, read from Psalm 25 before welcoming Rev. Dr. Das Sydney, president of the Canadian Council of Churches. “There is no faith that employs as much respect in Canada and Bermuda, and around the world, as The Salvation Army,” he said, noting that in all places and situations, “The Salvation Army is there. You are there.” Commissioner Tracey Tidd, territorial president of women’s ministries, thanked delegates for their kindness and support through Commissioner Floyd Tidd’s ongoing health journey. She then shared a message based on Romans 5:15, focusing on the theme of “Receiving Hope Today,” and encouraged the congregation to pause and look inward on their own hope reserves. “We are a people of hope, and we are committed to sharing that hope,” she began. “Day after day, you show up to meet people where they are. So, allow yourself a moment this morning to step back and take time to receive hope where you need it most. Our hope comes from Jesus.” In the afternoon, delegates gathered to hear from Jeff Lockyer, lead pastor at Southridge Community Church in St. Catharines, Ont., and author of Finding Our Way: Reclaiming the First-Century Church in the Twenty-First Century. “I believe, more than ever, seeing is believing. People are looking to see the reality and the authenticity of the love of Christ for themselves,” he said. “I also believe there is no church in Canada better positioned to address that opportunity than The Salvation Army. You bring the love of Christ to life.” Workshops continued throughout the day on a variety of topics, including poverty reduction strategy, discerning God’s voice, and trauma and caring, to help equip attendees for ministry and mission across the territory.

SALVATIONISTS RECOGNIZED FOR PANDEMIC SERVICE Day Four of INSPIRE features Ann Voskamp, Skeleton Army and a COVID-19 awards banquet.
A
ttendees began the fourth and final day of the conference portion of INSPIRE events with a time of worship led by Laura Rowsell, worship ministries director at Calgary’s Glenmore Temple, and representatives of the music and arts ministries department. Guest speaker for the plenary session was Canadian Ann Voskamp, author of four New York Times bestsellers, including The Broken Way and One Thousand Gifts. “Anywhere you see the Salvation Army logo around the world, you know that the hands and feet of Jesus are there to touch wounded places,” she said. “Canada would be so much poorer if we didn’t have The Salvation Army. You are meeting emotional, physical and spiritual needs like no other community in this country.” General Brian Peddle and Commissioner Rosalie Peddle, World President of World’s Ministries, received a warm welcome at Thursday evening’s Gala Dinner and COVID-19 Excellence Awards Ceremony, the final event of the conference portion of INSPIRE. Supporting the international leaders were Commissioners Floyd and Tracey Tidd, territorial commander and territorial president of women’s ministries, and Colonel Evie Diaz, chief secretary. Musical guest for the evening was jazz singer Elizabeth Shepherd and her backup musicians. Also in attendance was Ontario Premier Doug Ford, who expressed his gratitude to The Salvation Army for its exceptional contributions to Ontario communities during the pandemic. “The Salvation Army is one of the greatest charitable organizations in the world,” he said. “Everywhere you go, the Army brand is synonymous with compassion and hope.” Attendees watched The Salvation Army’s award-winning documentary, Everybody Needs an Army, and awards of excellence were presented to outstanding individuals from across the territory as they were recognized for their COVID-19 response efforts. Everyone in attendance received a commemorative coin featuring the Army’s colours of yellow, red and blue, with the shield on one side, the INSPIRE 2023 logo on the other, a Canadian maple leaf and the longtail bird of Bermuda. The design is meant to represent the Canada and Bermuda Territory and the diverse participants at INSPIRE.

As part of the INSPIRE Conference and Congress, The Salvation Army created a unique coin to commemorate the event. The coin was given to those attending the INSPIRE Gala Awards dinner on Thursday, June 29. The idea was first presented in the planning stages of INSPIRE by Lt-Colonel John Murray, territorial secretary for communications, to create a physical token to remind people of The Salvation Army’s history, mission and ministry, and celebrate the Army’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic. “We value and appreciate our officers, staff and volunteers who went above and beyond in service to Canadians and Bermudians during the pandemic,” says Lt-Colonel Murray. “This coin is a permanent memento of thanks and recognition of a significant time in our history when we collectively responded to the needs of those whom we are called to serve.” Incorporating The Salvation Army’s colours of yellow, red and blue, the design of the coin features the shield on one side and the INSPIRE 2023 logo on the other, complete with a Canadian maple leaf and the longtail bird of Bermuda. The design is meant to represent the Canada and Bermuda Territory and the diverse participants at INSPIRE. “It’s not often we all come together from the territory to celebrate the work of the Army more broadly,” says Glenn van Gulik, divisional secretary for public relations, Ontario Division, noting that INSPIRE is a watershed moment for The Salvation Army in Canada and Bermuda, and a benchmark in its history as the territory comes together after years of separation caused by the pandemic. “There’s an element of intentionality around this coin and so many other aspects of INSPIRE,” van Gulik continues. “It is a reminder of the significance that we each carry. Like us, this coin is a small part of something larger, and that is what motivates, encourages and inspires us into the next day.”

FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS Salvationists gather with international leaders for INSPIRE congress welcome celebration.

oronto’s historic Massey Hall was filled with the sights and sounds of Salvation Army music and praise on Friday evening as Salvationists gathered for a welcome celebration at the start of the congress portion of INSPIRE events. In their opening remarks, Commissioners Floyd and Tracey Tidd, territorial leaders, referenced Ezekiel 37. “Unless we respond to the invitation to call upon the Spirit to breathe fresh wind into this body called The Salvation Army, we cannot live, we cannot stand up,” said Commissioner Floyd Tidd. “As we make ourselves ready and willing to accept the fresh breathing of God upon us, he will again stand up a vast army for his purposes, vision and glory.” After a video celebrating The Salvation Army’s innovation grant program and a processional led by the Four Crest Dancers from Gitwinksihlkw, B.C., General Brian Peddle and Commissioner Rosalie Peddle, World President of Women’s Ministries, received a warm welcome as they entered the hall. “Hello, Canada and Bermuda!” said Commissioner Peddle as she brought greetings. “I am so glad that somebody had the wisdom to invite us to come back, because I wouldn’t want this weekend to have gone without me being here! The fire of the Holy Spirit has been lit in our hearts and is burning brightly.” In his message, General Brian Peddle shared the importance of gathering in the light of God. “You can’t be The Salvation Army and deprive yourself of the light of God in your life,” he said. “God has infused us with the brightness of his light, the hope of glory and the responsibility to reflect that glory in the world in which we live. I felt the challenge again tonight.”

A video celebrating the history of The Salvation Army in Canada and Bermuda was followed by Shine On Us, sung by Toronto’s Yorkminster Singing Company and the Canadian Staff Songsters and accompanied by the Canadian Staff Band. During the song, digital bracelets that had been distributed to attendees as they arrived at Massey Hall lit the auditorium with a myriad of twinkling lights. The bracelets came to life at various other points throughout the evening, again lighting the darkness. Colonel Evie Diaz, chief secretary, invited Commissioners Floyd and Tracey Tidd to the stage to acknowledge their faithful service to the territory throughout Commissioner Floyd’s ongoing health concerns. The audience responded with a standing ovation as an expression of appreciation and support. Following a scriptural presentation from Toronto’s Scarborough Citadel drama team entitled “Lord, Stir the Embers,” Jordan Bulloch of North Street Citadel, Hamilton, Bermuda, sang This Little Light of Mine,

supported by the Canadian Staff Band and Canadian Staff Songsters. Prayers for the congress were then simultaneously offered in English, Nisga’a, Spanish, Korean, French and Cantonese, accompanied by drummer Drae Azak. Preceded by the Canadian Staff Band’s Impulse, the crowd was treated to a performance of Fear Is Not My Future by the North Street Lyrical Dancers and an inspiring video testimony of David Kang: The Man Behind the Uniform. Following the presentation of Shine On by the Canadian Staff Songsters, the General and Commissioner Floyd Tidd presented the Award of Exceptional Service to two deserving individuals: Major Len Ballantine, musician, composer and leader of the Canadian Staff Songsters, in recognition of his lifelong contributions to the Army’s mission and ministry; and Sharon Wynne for her 55 years of service as an executive assistant for 15 divisional commanders in the Prairie Division.

For children attending INSPIRE, the lower level of the Westin Harbour Castle Conference Centre served as a hub for youth programming. Age-appropriate activities were scheduled into each day of the week, including dedicated and ministry-focused Bible time, circle time and healthy snacks. Spy-themed activities, such as secret-agent mazes and spy story times, helped kids gear up for the weekend’s CoMission I.N.G. event at Massey Hall. Day trips also took place, including to the Toronto Zoo, Canada’s Wonderland, the Royal Ontario Museum and Ripley’s Aquarium.

N O C E R L I A P S S N I s e k Ta orm t S y b Friday night’s SAL-CON was a vibrant event for teenagers and young adults hosted by Canada Bermuda Youth (CANBDA), featuring an action-packed schedule that ran late into the night.
Attendees enjoyed music by DJ TUNA and fun activities, such as a life-sized “human billiards” game, gigantic cornhole and Guess Who? games, a photo booth, an arcade, and buffets, filled with late-night snacks and desserts. Dodgeball and SA Gaming tournaments encouraged friendly competition among peers. Various acts, such as magician John Michael Hinton, the Four Crest Dancers and Christian pop band The Color, took to the main stage to provide entertainment throughout the night. Later in the evening, General Brian Peddle and Commissioner Rosalie Peddle stopped in to say hello and take pictures with the young people in attendance. SAL-CON brought youth together from across the territory to be inspired and energized, and know that there is a place for them in The Salvation Army. INSPIRE

INSPIRE CONGRESS CONTINUES IN TORONTO Final weekend features commissioning, community outreach and renewed commitments.

NSPIRE continued Saturday morning, July 1, with the ordination and commissioning of the Reflectors of Holiness at Massey Hall in Toronto. The Reflectors of Holiness entered the auditorium behind their sessional flag, carried by Cadet Krishna McFarlane, bearing lanterns that dispelled the darkness and represented the light of God. The cadets took their places on the stage as the Canadian Staff Songsters sang Reflecting His Likeness, the sessional song of the Reflectors of Holiness. Additional musical support for the service was provided by the Canadian Staff Band and NEON worship team. Major Deana Zelinsky, training principal at the College for Training, presented the cadets and auxiliary-captains, describing them as “true and passionate Salvationists.” Cadet Jeremy Avery and Aux-Captain Glenna Cryderman presented the Officer’s Covenant before Colonel Evie Diaz, chief secretary, stood before the Reflectors of Holiness as they recited the doctrines of The Salvation Army in their Declaration of Faith. “Stand firm on the rock-solid Jesus Christ,” said Commissioner Rosalie Peddle to the Reflectors of Holiness Session in the moments before their ordination and commissioning. “While we need to be a forward-thinking, serving, empowering Salvation Army, we can’t ignore that our holy God needs holy people who are committed to live holy lives, standing firm and grounded in their faith,” she said, also charging them to hold fast to God and stay close to Jesus. Commissioners Floyd and Tracey Tidd ordained and commissioned each cadet and auxiliary-captain as they stood before them and shared a portion of Scripture that had been selected for each of them. While the new officers left the stage to prepare for the next portion of the service, the congregation watched “Cadets and Kidettes in Community,” a video highlighting the Reflectors of Holiness and their children. Lieutenant Jeffrey Robertson spoke on behalf of his session-mates and proudly shared the cultural diversity represented in the Reflectors of Holiness. “We are Canadian-born, Mexican-born and Jamaican-born followers of Christ,” he said. “Our backgrounds, our cultures, our experiences intertwine to create something very beautiful and strong as we fulfil a passion and desire to live out our sessional name.” In his message, the General reminded those gathered that they must also reflect the holiness and light of Christ in the communities where they serve. “Lord, breathe your life into us,” he said. “We need a Salvation Army that’s alive and well, in touch with his spiritual well-being, cleansed by the Holy Spirit!”

Celebrating THE ARMY TODAY Music was at the forefront of Saturday evening’s worship service, entitled “Celebrating Our Present,” at Massey Hall, beginning with a prelude by a massed divisional youth band and continuing with performances by a massed chorus, Bermuda’s Christian Sisters With Voices, NEON, Robbie Lee of St. John’s Temple, N.L., and the Four Crest Dancers from Gitwinksihlkw, B.C. Colour-changing wristbands worn by members of the congregation created a vibrant display, lighting the audience in The Salvation Army’s signature colours of red, yellow and blue. The service commenced with a heartfelt prayer led by Captain Juan Chirinos, corps officer at Montreal Citadel, delivered in both English and French. Commissioner Floyd Tidd then greeted the congregation and representatives from Canada and Bermuda’s partner territories, and welcomed officers from the Canada and Bermuda Territory who are currently serving internationally. The congregation celebrated Partners in Mission with a march of international flags, highlighting the global reach and impact of The Salvation Army. Lt-Colonel Brenda Murray, director of international development, introduced Colonel Samuel Baah, territorial commander, Malawi Territory, and Colonel Lyn Hills, territorial president of women’s ministries, Germany, Lithuania and Poland Territory, who shared inspiring testimonies of witnessing God’s work in their respective ministries. Commissioner Floyd Tidd then called upon Michelle Mailman, a young person from Wetaskiwin Corps, Alta., who was acknowledged for her dedication in helping her corps surpass its fundraising target for Partners in Mission. After presenting a cheque in the amount of $1,800 to the General, Mailman was awarded the Territorial Commander’s Youth Leadership Award for “exceptional service, outstanding commitment and extraordinary innovation offered by a young person to give hope to those in need.”

A heartfelt video dedicated to the service of the international leaders was screened as an expression of gratitude as they prepare to retire next month. The Peddles were presented with gifts from different regions within the Canada and Bermuda Territory, including pottery from Bermuda, a piece of silverware from Canada’s Indigenous communities, and a painting depicting their home province of Newfoundland and Labrador. “Our God is on the move,” said Commissioner Peddle in her message. “There’s a fresh and beautiful wave of God’s Holy Spirit flowing across our world.” The service concluded with the familiar words O Boundless Salvation as the crowd stood to sing, wave Salvation Army flags and raise their hands in celebration.

CANADA DAY AT YONGEDUNDAS SQUARE Torontonians and out-of-town visitors of all ages and ethnicities celebrated Canada Day with The Salvation Army at Yonge-Dundas Square, which was filled with Salvation Army tents, posters and advertisements.
A roster of impressive entertainment from both out-of-town and local acts, including rock group The Color, hip-hop entertainer Rayto, and the Elevation Rhythm ensemble performed. All were greeted with applause and enthusiasm, and many in the crowd joyfully danced and sang along.

SUNDAY PRAISE AND WORSHIP Sunday morning commenced with a self-guided prayer walk.
T
he Sunday morning holiness meeting at Massey Hall began with a musical prelude by NewFound Brass and Chorus. After Commissioners Floyd and Tracey Tidd opened the meeting with All Hail the Power of Jesus’ Name and a prayer, vocalist Wendy Woodland of Corner Brook Temple, N.L., sang To the Glory and Praise of God. Kathryn and Kyle Higgins and their daughter shared a choric Scripture reading from Ezekiel 37, and NewFound Brass’ band selection, Christ of Calvary, was followed by a special Partners in Mission offering. An Award of Exceptional Service was presented to Major Lucy Pilgrim and her late husband, Major Warrick Pilgrim, in recognition of the significant post-retirement service they gave in 11 appointments. All officers engaged in post-retirement service then stood and were acknowledged by the congregation. During the prayer focus, violinist William Barter and dancer Jalianne Li accompanied Jesus, Be the Centre as the congregation’s bracelets once again illuminated. In his message, General Peddle told stories of our “vast Army around the world that’s standing firm.... standing against darkness, pushing forward into the injustices of the world, with shield and banner held high. This is the Army that God has raised up. We will not become a valley of dry bones; we will signal that we are available to him.” In response, dozens lined the mercy seat and stood in the aisles, praying with each other. Later in the service, Major Deana Zelinsky, training principal, introduced the new lieutenants who received their appointments from Commissioner Floyd and Tracey Tidd. When the General put out a call for officers, more than 30 candidates flooded the stage, signalling their willingness to be used by God. In conclusion, Commissioner Floyd Tidd thanked General and Commissioner Peddle, Colonel Evie Diaz and Lt-Colonel John Murray, who represented the INSPIRE Executive Committee and a host of conference and congress planning groups. After a benediction and grand recessional with Army and national flags, Salvationists spilled onto Shuter St. outside Massey Hall for a final time of fellowship and celebration.
