Thank you for supporting the Rescue Magazine Network. This is a challenging time right now with the Coronavirus affecting so many lives. During this time animals are also struggling to find a home. Most if not all shelters are shut down for adoptions. This time all shelters are in operation to take in srays but the rest is at a halt. Please share pictures on face book and email Shelters and Rescues and find out how you can help. Check with local foster networks and become a foster. Be safe follow CDC advice and we will make it. Yes, us, AGAIN!!! We are Zeus and Perseus and we have been waiting forever, getting closer and closer to being in rescue a year already! We are a pair of adult male piggies and have gotten to enjoy life in several different foster homes. We are very handsome, but Perseus is also a little shy. We would like a home with lots of space to play and run as we are energetic young bucks.

Austin Guinea Pig Rescue is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to rescuing and rehoming guinea pigs, chinchillas, hamsters, gerbils, mice, degus and hedgehogs in the Austin, Texas area. All of our animals are in private foster homes and an online application with a follow-up phone call with one of our board members is required. The adoption fee for guinea pigs is $25, for hamsters, gerbils, and mice $10, for chinchillas, degus, rabbits, and hedgehogs is $65. We do not do same day adoptions. Once a submitted foster or adoption application has been reviewed, yopg.28u can make an appointment to meet the animals. We do not have a public or drop-in facility.

Animals and the Law By S.P.C.A Cruelty Law

In Texas, two types of laws protect animals from cruelty: civil laws and criminal laws. The laws are similar but differ in the penalties they impose. In a civil case, if a judge rules that a person or people have been cruel to animals, the judge may take away their animals and/or order them to pay restitution. If prosecuted in a criminal case, a person may face penalties including fines, jail or both. Those under the age of 18 are also required to undergo counseling if convicted of animal cruelty. Texas criminal laws only apply to domesticated animals, such as house pets and livestock defined as “domesticated living creature(s) or any wild living creature previously captured” and subject to a person’s care and control. The scope of civil laws are broader and do not differentiate between domestic and wild animals; however, civil statutes adopt a much narrower definition of what constitutes cruelty. Therefore, people could engage in actions that are not prosecutable under Texas criminal laws, but they would be held liable for their actions under civil laws. Section 42.09 "Cruelty to Livestock Animals" and 42.092 "Cruelty of Non-Livestock Animals" of the Texas Penal Code prohibits a person from intentionally, knowingly or recklessly cruelly treating an animal. The following actions define cruel punishment: Torturing an animal Failing to provide food, care or shelter Abandoning an animal Transporting or confining an animal in a cruel manner Killing, seriously injuring or poisoning an animal Causing an animal to fight with another Using a live animal as a lure in a dog race Tripping a horse Injuring an animal belonging to another person Seriously overworking an animal.

House Bill 653 and Senate Bill 1724, commonly known as “Loco’s Law,” went into effect September 1, 2001, making animal cruelty a felony and punishable by a $10,000 fine and up to two years in jail. The law was named for a puppy called Loco, whose eyes were intentionally gouged out. Prior to Loco’s Law, animal cruelty was not considered a felony under Texas law. Today, animal cruelty convictions are classified as either a felony or misdemeanor. Compared to other states, Texas’ animal cruelty statutes are very narrow in scope because they exclude certain types of animals—including circus animals, wild animals and animals used in experiments—from protection from animal cruelty laws. Additionally, section 42.10 of the Texas Penal Code prohibits dog fighting, and also deems offensive such activities as attending a dog fight as a spectator, or participating in the earnings or operation of a dog fighting facility. Cockfighting is a crime in Texas, where it is a felony, punishable by two years in a state jail and/or a $10,000 fine. Since 2002, a federal law has prohibited any interstate or foreign transport of fighting animals.

(TTPP, SaveLoraTurtles.org), An all-volunteer non-profit organization (501c3), is a nationwide association of marine biologists and enthusiasts who provide financial and networking assistance to Vida Milenaria Sea Turtle Camp in the coastal village of Tecolutla, Veracruz, Mexico. The goal is to restore the numbers of Kemp's ridley, the smallest and the most endangered of the seven types of sea turtle. Female Kemp's ridleys land on the beaches of the Gulf of Mexico in this region and points farther north, in events called arribadas (Spanish for "arrivals"). Nesting occurs from mid-March through late June. The turtles move fifteen or twenty yards inland and then bury their eggs - perhaps a hundred per nest. The hatchlings emerge two months later and - if they survive predatory crabs - crawl to the sea, where - if they survive predatory fish! - they may mature and repeat the cycle. Until the mid-twentieth century, these arribadas were massive, including tens of thousands of turtles in a single day! (A video, available online, shows 40,000 arriving on the beach in 1947). Then catastrophe struck - trucks from Mexico City would be called out for an arribada and the buried eggs immediately harvested for collection and later sale. Grown turtles were captured for meat and leather. Shrimp boats would inadvertently catch the Kemp's ridleys in their nets and drown them. The turtles in the ocean would consume and die from discarded plastic. The result was that the estimated number of this species fell, in a single generation, from tens of thousands to about one thousand. The United States and Mexico have, through government agencies, taken steps to protect the nests and hatchlings at bases centered on Rancho Nuevo in Tamaulipas, Mexico and Padre Island in Texas. The poaching of nests has been outlawed and patrols established to protect them; harvesting of mature turtles has likewise been made illegal; injured turtles have been given veterinary care and released; shrimping nets have been redesigned to release captured ridleys and other species of sea turtle. Vida Milenaria ("ancient life") is a private effort in prime nesting beaches south of Rancho Nuevo, led for more than forty years by Fernando and Irma Manzano. Its activities encompass education and protection of Kemp’s ridleys and other species of sea turtles, on over 20 miles of coastline. This grassroots conservation effort is a significant part of the road to recovery for Kemp's ridley. While the results have been encouraging, only a fraction of the original number of these sea turtles has been restored. Continued support is urgently needed. About This Group

CTLAFP is a group that supports the families of missing pets and supports those who find stray pets. We are a Facebook support group for folks in the lost pet community. We started the page in 2012. We have an admin team, a moderator team, scanners, fosters, and over 30,000 members. We do not have funding, we are not a 501, we are not a rescue. Our goals are to reunite pets and their families above all. To keep pets out of our over crowded local shelters, we ask regular citizens to open their home to lost pets. We offer an adoption page for th ose who have held found pets over n hours and we also help raise funds for vetting found pets. We attend pet events and host our own events through out the community to allow these members the chance to find homes for their fosters. Email ctlafp@gmail.com for more information.

Homless and you love your dog...

by Ron Ducharme

Homelessness in the U.S has grown at an alarming rate over the last decade. You see images on network T.V. depicting the life of people on the streets. A story that mostly is overlooked, is the animals that share the experience with their owners. This is a story about a sweet dog named Sierra. She lived on the street with her owner for a year before the owner gave her up for adoption. The man, thinking this was not the best life for his beloved little girl, did the hardest thing, and surrendered her. I knew this man and it crushed him. I put the word out, in our network and found a person that works for us, who decided to adopt her. Glad to report Sierra is living a great life with lots of attention, love, food and grooming she needs. The man is kept updated often and always with a tear of gratitude, is happy for her new life. I can only imagine what it is like living on the street and i know many who cannot get into a shelter because they are bonded to their pet. Some will make the hard decision and others will stick it out. My prayer is they all get off the streets and live a life without fear of the unknown. When you see a person and their animal and your heart tells you to give something remember the pet, they do need the help.

We sometimes find ourselves providing loving arms and a safe foster home for the severely ill to live out their last days being loved and cherished, sadly all too often they are experiencing this love for the very first time. Many of the dachshunds we get are abandoned in shelters because they can no longer provide their owners with healthy puppies to be sold. Or they have gotten old and are in need of medical attention so they are sent to the shelter for someone else to care for. All too often the only medical care they have ever had was their first shots as puppies. Some of the Dachshunds who come to us are purebreds. They come to us in all shapes sizes and colors. If you are truly looking for a pet that wants nothing more then to please you and love you, then please consider adopting one of our seniors. They are full of love and ask for nothing more than to be loved in return.

Our Story PoundPup and Friends Initiative - PPFI·Wednesday, January 22, 2020· PoundPup originated in 2010, when our founder went to the local “pound” to pick up Polly (that’s her stray photo from the shelter website). Polly was apparently deaf and blind, and had mange. Her prognosis did not seem to be very good, and shelter staff released her free of charge, in hopes that she may have a few good days in a loving home. Many medical treatments later, Polly emerged healthy and very spunky. This is when PoundPup and Friends founder, Liz Rainey, realized that with proper funding, we could probably save a lot more animals from going to the pound, or getting adopted out of the shelter. An idea was born, but lack of funding soon stopped the program. But the idea lingered in Liz’s head, and on August 17, 2017, she filed the necessary paperwork to get PoundPup and Friends Initiative formally registered as a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. We want to assist displaced, stray or unwanted pet animals in an effort to keep them out of shelters and avoid euthanasia or exposure to dangerous elements, human or natural. BARI- Bari’s estimated birthday is 8/19/12, a very slim 11 lb, handsome reddish tan boy with white markings, he is fostering with IGCA Rescue North Texas. Bari is a special needs puppy mill rescue still working hard on socialization, human trust and physical attention. Everyone who spends time with Bari grows to love him. The happy dance he does, when he knows he is going outside, and his frolic through the yard as he runs back to the door is joyful to watch. He fits in beautifully with a group of dogs as he is easy and demands no attention causing jealousy. He prefers his kennel and a comfortable bed to toys and attention. Do you and your pets have a place in your home and hearts to become Bari’s forever family?

TAVISH-If you’re looking for a very loving, calm IG in his middle years, Tavish is your lad. Tavi (also known as Butterbean) is a charmer and whip-smart. He already knows many commands/words and learns more as his foster mom teaches him. Tavi loves a routine and finds it comforting to know what’s happening (and when) as regards to walks, potty breaks and feeding. This is partly the breed and also due to his blindness, caused by cataracts. Please don’t think of Tavi as a “special needs” dog; his foster mom believes he has been blind for quite awhile, since he’s very comfortable with his sight loss. He gets to know his home pretty quickly to make his way around and will zero in on your location when you say, “come!” and clap hands. He’s just a regular dog who happens to be blind.

EMMA ROSE- I'm a chill girl just looking for someone to snuggle with. I love laying outside in the grass just soaking up the sun and am very comfortable with using a supervised doggie door. I'm patient with my hyper foster sister and have never had a single issue with food aggression, even when foster sister tries to steal my treats! Emma Rose has been diagnosed with bladder cancer. She is currently symptom free (we found the mass by chance, during a routine vet visit) and has started treatment. At this time she is expected to have a good quality of life for at least the coming year, if not longer.

WALLACE- Wallace is a sweet boy who has made amazing progress during his time in rescue. He came to us from a puppy mill and was terrified of everything. People were very scary and it took a couple of months before he would willingly let his foster mom pet him. Wallace has discovered the joy of toys and he has become more and more playful. He loves the other dogs in the house and will frequently be seen cuddling with them on a dog bed. While Wallace has made a lot of progress, he is still continuing to grow. When new or confusing situations present themselves, he will get scared and is unsure of how to react. He is looking for a patient and loving home to help him as he continues on his journey, and you will be rewarded with lots of love!

Animals who are Heroes

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

G.I. Joe (March 24, 1943 in Algiers - June 3, 1961 in Detroit) was a pigeon noted for his service in the United States Army Pigeon Service. The bird is part of the homing pigeons used during World War I and World War II for communication and reconnaissance purposes. G.I. Joe had the name tag, Pigeon USA43SC6390.He was hatched in March 1943, in Algiers, North Africa and underwent a training for two-way homing pigeons perfected at Fort Monmouth, in New Jersey. During the Italian Campaign of World War II, G.I. Joe saved the lives of the inhabitants of the village of Calvi Vecchia, Italy, and of the British troops of 56th (London) Infantry Division occupying it. Air support had been previously requested against German positions at Calvi Vecchia on 18 October 1943. However, the 169th (London) Infantry Brigade attacked and won back the village from the Germans ahead of schedule but they were unable to transmit a message via radio to call off the planned American air raid.G.I. Joe was dispatched as a last resort to carry the message and arrived in the air base just in time to avoid the Allied air force from bombing their own men. G.I. Joe flew this 20-mile distance in an impressive 20 minutes, just as the planes were preparing to take off for the target. Over 100 men were saved. On 4 November 1946, G.I. Joe was presented the Dickin Medal for gallantry by Major-General Charles Keightley at the Tower of London the citation credits him with the most outstanding flight made by a United States Army homing pigeon in World War II.[6] The award is also known as the equivalent of the Victoria Cross or the Medal of Honor for animals.G.I. Joe was the 29th and the first non-British recipient of the medal.

KNGY Internet Radio

After World War II, he was housed at the U.S. Army's Churchill Loft at Fort Monmouth, in New Jersey along with 24 other heroic pigeons. He died at the Detroit Zoological Gardens at the age of eighteen, and was mounted and displayed at the U.S. Army Communications Electronics Museum at Fort Monmouth.

Medical Notes for a healthier Pet

Cleaning your Dogs ears

LET’S TALK ABOUT EARS: Those floppy things on the sides of our pups’ heads seem to be an issue at times! So what can we do to help them when they are having problems? I’ll start with a little info on the problem, because there are some important things that you need to know: Our pup’s ears are sensitive, so to prevent those nasty infections, you need to keep up on their care. They hate to have anyone messing with them, even more if they are hurting, so prepare for a wiggly Pyr-worm! You have to do it right: if you mess up, you can hurt them. Ok, so let’s proceed to the next thing: “Ow! My ears itch and hurt!”Do you have a stinky pup? Not the “I just rolled in the mud or in the horse poop” smell; Just a nasty odor. Normally, dogs smell ok and there’s always going to be the wet dog, or the sweaty dog from playing outside. When there is a problem, there is a bad odor. There are a few things that can cause this: an ear infection, dental tartar/oral infections or skin infections. If you smell a bad odor, sniff their ears. When they are ok, they may have a little wax, be overall clean and the skin is pink, with no odor. Most dogs will get an ear infection at least once in their life. It’s painful to them, and you will be able to tell if there’s a problem. It’s not normal for dogs to constantly scratch their ears. Occasionally, they will if there are maybe fleas, or some minor irritation, but if they are constantly scratching their ears there’s something wrong. Shaking their head, rubbing/scratching the ears, redness/swelling, and of course the smell. Most infections are caused by dirt, bacteria, and mites, especially mites in puppies. Your vet will be able to help with this. One way to check your pup’s ears is “The Cotton Ball/Q-Tip test”. Gently swab their ears with a cotton ball or head of a Q-Tip. It should come out clean. There’s no such thing as “normal dirt, so unless they have been in the mud, or dirty area, it should come out clean. If it comes out dark brown or you see bright red, scaly skin, or has pus then there’s more than likely an infection. Next: Infection Treatment, or “let’s mess with our pup’s sore ears some more – they love it!” First the ear has to be clean, so this is going to be fun – the ear hurts, the pup weighs about 90 – 100 lbs., and doesn’t want their ears messed with! To effectively clean the ear, get some help, fill the ear canal with the solution, put a cotton ball at the opening, and then gently massage the base of the ear. The cotton ball will keep the solution in the canal, absorb the extra solution, and catch some of the bad stuff. As long as you can get your “little” Pyr to tolerate it, you can repeat this until the cotton ball is clean. Be ready for the rapid head shaking when you let go!Wear old clothes for this job! When cleaning the ear, use a cotton ball to do this: NOT a Q-Tip! The Q-Tip can rupture the eardrum of a wiggling Pyr! And don’t use alcohol, just think of you having a rash and pouring alcohol on it! After the cleaning fun, let the ear set for 10 or so minutes to dry. Give your brave patient a treat, before continuing! Then here comes the meds! Use what your vet has prescribed (ointment or drops), and follow the vet’s treatment schedule. Like us, they need to complete their treatment – or the infection can come back, and be harder to treat! Make sure you clean the ears each time you treat. You need to get out any old ointment, so the fresh stuff can work. Piling on more and more ointment will just give the infection a nice place to grow! How long this will take is up to your vet. Just be sure to follow their instructions! Now for Prevention, or “Let’s not go through this again!” After the infection has been treated and your Pyr is a happy Pyr be sure to keep their ears clean, so hopefully, unless there’s an issue like an allergy, or other problem there should be no more hassles until time to clean again! Routine cleanings are very important to their health, it keeps the nasty infections away, and if your pup has allergies, it will just help with preventing those infections! After a bath or swimming, give the ears a cleaning. If your pup has repeat ear infections, ask your vet to do an ear culture, if they don’t suggest it.

So what supplies will I need? Ear cleaner - can be natural (1 part vinegar to 2 parts water);Witch hazel; Organic apple cider vinegar and purified water, mixed equal parts; Hydrogen peroxide; or use the cleaner recommended by your veterinarian. Cotton Swabs or Q-Tips – (do not stick more than the head of the Q-Tip into ears). Towels, lots. (for the pup and you!) This is messy, and you will get some of the nasty stuff on you! A helper, unless you’re brave! A place where you can work with a squirming, strong, heavy pup! And of course, TREATS!!! LOTS!!!

So now we’ve covered the fun world of ears let’s recap: Infections are mean, painful and nasty. Proper cleaning will aid in the prevention. Prepare for the cleaning: get your supplies, put them within reach. Follow all the treatment instructions from your vet. Start a regular cleaning schedule. I hope this has been a help with taking care of your Pyr. Cleaning their ears isn’t too bad! Just regular care will go a long way to having a happy, ear infection-free fur baby! For more information, please talk to your vet. They are the experts in these things! © 2020 John J. Paonessa

Happy New Year! 2012 is going to be a wonderful year for animals in San Antonio. You may be aware already that the Austin city shelter has gotten to a greater than 90% save rate due largely to the efforts of Austin Pets Alive! The great news is that San Antonio Pets Alive! has already been formed to make San Antonio a No Kill City with an estimated life-saving launch date of 1/19/2012. This new organization will use best practices from many different cities to get to a No Kill San Antonio as fast as possible - which would make us the largest U.S. city to be No Kill! The world has long believed that there are not enough homes for the pets killed in shelters but according to the American Veterinary Medical Association, there are over 100,000 homes available to new pets in San Antonio each year. If we convince just 20% of those homes, through marketing, awareness, and adoption events to adopt a shelter pet instead of purchasing a pet, enough animals will be saved to make San Antonio a No Kill City (where only terminally ill or dangerous animals are euthanized). Currently, the city of San Antonio euthanizes

over 18,000 animals per year, or around 50/day. This is a crisis that needs immediate attention. SAPA will have a laser-like focus on the dogs and cats who are literally hours from euthanasia, and will provide temporary and emergency foster homes, medical aid, and adoption services to make sure they survive. Our first priority will be to save every single puppy and then move on to saving every single kitten, then on to the adults who end up on the euthanasia list. Just like every animal ends up in the shelter through the action of one person, we need for every animal to get out of the shelter alive through the action of individuals like you who all step up to help. It is going to take the San Antonio community to help make this a success! Let’s all make a New Year’s Resolution to save our San Antonio animals! San Antonio Pets Alive’s success will be possible because of YOUR thoughtful contributions (time and money). Because only by working together can we reach a time when there are No More Homeless Pets. Your tax-deductible gift will give hope and a loving home to San Antonio’s animals. Please don’t delay. I urge you to give

your most generous gift now so that we can rescue animals that are currently in danger of euthanasia and help re-home them in the new year! Thank you and bless you for your kindness In partnership and excitement Dr Ellen Jefferson Executive Director

Training Tips for your Pet Service Dog? There is a true disservice to the Service Dog community! I needed to throw that out there. This is a very touchy subject for me. Challenges are faced by MANY who truly need the service of a dog that can help with their disability. With that said, let’s discuss what a true Service Dog is, and the differences as identified by https:// www.ada.gov/.Often, a person may adopt or currently have a dog that want to consider it, or want to “train” it to be, a Service Dog. This is not always compliant to the definition of a SD (Service Dog). Not every dog will qualify as a Service Dog by ADA standards. First, let’s discuss the Three categories: Service, Therapy, and Emotional Support, as defined by https:// www.ada.gov/service_animals_2010.htm. This discussion will be VERY generalized and is left to many interpretations. Many Trainers have different interpretations of Federal Law as it stands, so this is just my view on the current law. By ADA terms, a Service Dog is “a service animal is a dog that is individually trained to do work or perform tasks for a person with a disability.” AND ALSO: “The work or task a dog has been trained to provide must be directly related to the person’s disability. Dogs whose sole function is to provide comfort or emotional support do not qualify as service animals under the ADA.” https://www.ada.gov/service_animals_2010.htm This has been very controversial and, in my opinion, very misused. I have turned away a few clients based on my professional assessment of the “need” of a Service Dog. I’ve often been approached for training of a dog that is “needed” because someone has anxiety and needs the dog to calm them. After questioning the person, the owner tells me that petting their dog makes them feel better. Isn’t this why we have a dog anyway! This is NOT a Service Dog. I must concede that there is a medical need for such application, but there should be a medical need. In today’s society, I have noticed that many Service Dog requests are for anxiety. Here is where the discretion and controversy come into play. There is a discretionary decision that a Trainer must consider when accepting a client for training. My personal opinion for the three categories is: 1)

Service Dog – my dog performs a task that mitigates my disability that I cannot perform myself

2) Therapy Dog – a dog that is VERY well Obedience trained that can help others by visiting them in a – Veteran Home, Senior Care Home, Etc 3)

Emotional Support – I pet my dog and I feel better; his/her presence helps me

Yes, the above three explanations may be harsh (especially the third one) but it’s the truth and,in my opinion, if any trainer says any different, they may be infringing the law. I am a Professional Dog Trainer and Behavior Specialist located in Belton, TX. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact me. I would be happy to speak with you about your pup. He does get along with children but it takes him a while to warm up to them. He would do best in a home with no dogs and only cats. He loves cuddles and pets once he is comfortable in his environment. He was born a Feral so he is still getting used to trusting humans. Adoption fee $30

Company Overview

Local Cat rescue ensuring that all unwanted, abused, and abandoned cats in the North Killeen Castle Heights area have a loving place to call home. We started when we came across a stray kitten on our property, he was very shy and sad. We earned his trust and let him in our home. We made him healthy and happy and found him a good home. Soon after another cat showed up skinny and in need of love, so we did the same for her. Next thing we knew we were up to 8 cats, then 10, then we were rescuing every cat we came across. It was our mission to help them all.

People who make a Diffence with Animals A.S.C.P.A. website 2014 Person of the year who help animals https://www.aspca.org/blog/honoringthose-who-make-difference-animals

Alabama native Annika Glover, 11, had been battling a cancerous brain tumor for nearly four years. But when she became a participant in the Make-A-Wish program, she put the needs of vulnerable animals ahead of her own. Annika used her one wish to save shelter animals. This wish was granted by the Alabama chapter of Make-A-Wish, which donated $7,000 in Annika‛s name to the Pets Are Worth Saving (P.A.W.S.) rescue group in Florence, Alabama. With her cancer now in remission, Annika spends much time volunteering at shelter events.

"Until one has loved an animal, a part of one's soul remains unawakened." - Anatole France I would like to thank a group of individuals who are true unsung heroes of Animal Welfare. Their tireless efforts in some of the saddest situations, help animals everyday to find a home. These individuals deserve the respect and appreciation for without them thousands more will perish. Thank a Volunteer..... If you have time to spare the Animals could use your help.
