The Astronomical Clock, also called Prague Orloj, is a significant landmark of Old Town Square. Situated on the southern wall of Prague Town Hall, it is a compelling sight that it has become the most photographed landmark by tourists visiting the beautiful capital city of the Czech Republic. The clock is unusual in that, in addition to indicating the 24 hours of the day, the astronomical dial shows the position of the sun and the moon in the sky, along with other astronomical information.

The Prague Astronomical Clock was first installed in 1410. This makes it the world's third-oldest astronomical clock and the oldest in operation. The lower calendar dial was added in around 1490. Around the same time, incredible gothic statueswere also added.

Much like the La Sagrada Familia, the clock has withstood the test of time and symbolizesthe connection between nature and one's religiousbeliefs. There are also four figurines on the side of the clock dial or astrolabe. They suggest the allegories of Death, Greed, Lust, and Vanity. The figurines move their heads and hands when the clock rings to signalize every hour from 9 am to 11 pm. They are joined by 12 Apostles and a Golden Rooster whose crow endsthe procession and the movement of the allegories.

ABOUT THECOVER

The Sagrada Familia is a famous Roman Catholic church in Barcelona, Spain, designed by Antoni Gaudi. Gaudi primarily combined Gothic and curvilinear Art Nouveau forms to create thismasterpiece.Thisconstructioncommenced in1882 and came to a temporaryhalt in1926 when Gaudi died. While the construction resumed later, the church is still being built and is anticipated to be completed by2026,marking Gaudi'sdeath'scentennial.

Although incomplete, Sagrada Familia attracts millions of tourists who witness its exquisite beautyeveryyear.

THENAVE

La Sagrada Familia utilizes three-dimensional forms of ruled surfaces, including hyperboloids, parabolas, helicoids, and conoids. These complex shapes allow for a thinner, finer structure and are intended to enhance the temple'sacousticsand qualityof light.Gaudi used plaster models to develop the design, including a 1:10 scale model of the central nave measuring five meters in height and width by two meters in depth. He also devised a system of strings and weights suspended from a plan of the temple on the ceiling. He derived the necessary anglesof the columns, vaults, and archesfrom this inverted model.Thisis evident in the slanted columns of the Passion facade, which recall tensile structures but act in compression.

The central nave soars to a height of 45 meters and is designed to resemble a forest of multi-hued piers in Montjuïc and granite. The piers change in cross-section from base to terminus, increasing the number of vertices from polygonal to circular. The slender, bifurcating columnsdraw the eye upward, where light filtersthrough circular aperturesin the vaults. These are finished in Venetian green and gold glass tiles, articulating the hyperboloids'lines.

In December 2022, a new milestone of Gaudí's Sagrada Familia in Barcelona illuminated the terminals on the towers of the Evangelists Luke and Mark, celebrating the completion of these two new structuresthat reach 135 metersin height.Togetherwith the tower of the Virgin Mary,inaugurated inDecember2021,3 of the sixcentral towerswill be completed.

The figures of the tetramorph made of Thassos marble are the work of sculptor Xavier Medina Campeny.The upperwings,a commonelement forthe fourtowersof the Evangelists, "are generated with the last ruled geometry used by Gaudí, a large elliptical hyperboloid," saysJordiFaulí,architect directorof the Sagrada Familia.

Through a press release, they point out that the forecast is to finish the tower of Jesus Christ in 2026, coinciding with the centenary of the death of Antoni Gaudí. That same year, Barcelona is scheduled to be the World Capital of Architecture (UIA-UNESCO).

Lightsand Colours

The use of lights and colours to set the mood of Sagrada Familia's interiors is yet another highlight of Gaudi's work that also makes the church so close to looking like paradise.

The large, vibrant stained glass windows of the Sagrada Familia paint the basilica's interior with beautiful red, green, blue, and yellow hues. To achieve this balance between the coloursof the glassand natural light, the arrangement has been made such that brightly coloured windows are placed at the bottom, and the translucent windows are on top. This lights up the interiors creating the perfect setting for prayer and meditation.

The colours on each of the windows come with sacred representations. The yellow, green, and blue on the Nativity portal symbolize poverty, light, and the birth of Christ, whereas the red, yellow, and orange on the Passion portal allude to water, resurrection,and light.

Her creations continue to amaze and inspire florists/ horticulturists globally and fans from many fields, like fashion, fine arts, and even films like The Great Gatsby. She brought us to the magnificent works of husband and wife team Baz Luhrmann and Catherine Martin, who perfectly defined their projects' opulence. Still, they never forgot the moral lesson - that love always outshines gold.

Indeed we thrive on great symbolism and momentous events. But more importantly,we focus on preserving our cultural gems and putting Nature first.Time is of the essence, and forward-looking, numerous things must be done without compromising our existence, our world As Gaudi said, "Creation continues unceasingly through man's means of communication. But man does not create?He discovers. Those who seek the laws of Nature to support their new works collaborate with the creator.Copyists do not collaborate. The Sagrada Familia Crypt

The crypt, located one level below the apse of the Basilica, is the resting place of AntoniGaudi,the manbehind the Sagrada Familia.

It consists of four chapels dedicated to the Virgin of El Carmen (the site of Gaudí's tomb),Christ,the Virgin of Montserrat,and Christ onthe Cross(the location of the tomb of Josep María Bocabella). When you look toward the sky, you'll see a beautiful sculpted image of the Annunciation to Mary, right at the point where the arches of the crypt meet.You'll see that the crypt flooriscovered ina breathtaking mosaic of Roman origin.

THEAPSE

The Apse

The apse, a semi-circular structure with a dome, isgenerallypart of a cathedral where the altar lies. Gaudi ensured the apse of the Basilica felt light and open and designed it so that natural light from the outdoors would spill into it. The apse houses seven chapelsdedicated to the seven sorrowsof joysof Saint Joseph.

As you walk through the cathedral, you will be struck by the sheer enormity of construction. Gaudi has been known to use nature as a muse, and the massive columns within the cathedral have been built to resemble trees growing in a forest, leaving you with the illusionof walking through a botanical gardenratherthana site of religiousworship.

Architect and designer Antoni Gaudi is the most internationally prestigious figure in Spanish architecture. Born in Reus, Catalonia, he graduated in Barcelona in 1878, and this city became the center of his activities. One important aspect is his capacity as a designer

This led him to create, in close collaboration with some of the outstanding artisans of his time, all those elements making up architectural space - wrought iron, furniture, stained glass, sculptural work, mosaics, ceramics, and so on - within an organic concept of decoration and with the integration of these elements into the construction process.

Childhood of Antoni Gaudí

According to some biographers, Antoni Gaudí was born on the 25th of June 1852 in Reus, although others claim that he was born in Riudoms, a small village near Reus where his family spent their summers He came from a family of boilermakers, which allowed the young Gaudíto acquire a particular skill for working with space and volume as he helped his father and grandfather in the family workshop. His talent for designing spaces and transforming materials grew and prospered until it eventually metamorphosed into a veritable genius for three-dimensional creation

Gaudí's health was delicate as a child, so he had to spend long hours resting at the summer house in Riudoms. There, he passed many an hour contemplating and storing up in his mind the secrets of nature, which he thought of as his supreme mistress and ultimate teacher of the highest knowledge, being the crowning achievement of the Creator

Gaudí once said:"originality consists of going back to the origins"as such, Antoni Gaudí found the essence and the meaning of architecture by following the same patterns of nature and by always respecting its laws. He did not copy it but instead traced its course through cooperation. In that context, he created the most beautiful,sustainable, and practical work possible through his architecture.

Architectural studies

In 1870 he moved to Barcelona to pursue his academic career in architecture, at the same time working at various jobs to enable him to pay for his studies He was an inconsistent student, but he was already showing some evidence of brilliance that opened doors for him, allowing him to collaborate with some of his professors. When he completed his studies at the School of Architecture in 1878, the Director, Elies Rogent, declared: "I do not know if we have awarded this degree to a madman or a genius; only time will tell"Undeniably, however, the young architect's ideas were not a mere repetition of things that had already been done up to that time, nor could anybody receive them with indifference

THECHAPEL

The Sagrada Familia Crypt

The crypt, which houses Gaudí?s tomb, is a chapel where the masses are celebrated regularly. It is located underthe apse and can be accessed bya staircase.The crypt issurmounted bya large vault adorned with an image of the Annunciationto Mary.

There are fourchapelsinside the Sagrada Familia, each with itsunique dedicatee:The Virgin of Carmel, where Gaudí is buried; Jesus Christ; the Virgin of Montserrat; and Crucified Christ, which houses Josep María Bocabella's tomb. Above and beyond his relationship with Güell, Gaudíreceived many commissions and proposed numerous projects.Many of these,fortunately, were transformed into reality, but some never made it off the paper.

During his mature period, masterpieces followed one after another:the Bellesguard Tower, Park Güell, the restoration of Mallorca Cathedral, the church on the Güell Estate, Casa Batlló, La Pedrera, and lastly, the Church of the Sagrada Familia

Surprisingly, the magnificence of Antoni Gaudí's architecture coincided, as the result of a personal decision by the architect, with a progressive withdrawal by the man himself Gaudí, who in his youth had frequented theatres, concerts, and tertulias (social gatherings), went from being a young dandy with gourmet tastes to neglecting his appearance, eating frugally and distancing himself from social life while simultaneously devoting himself ever more fervently to religious and mystical sentiment

Gaudí died on the 10th of June 1926 after being knocked down by a tram while making his way, as he did every evening, to the Sagrada Família from the Church of Sant Felip Neri. After being struck, he lost consciousness, and nobody suspected that this disheveled old man who was not carrying any identity papers was the famous architect He was taken to the Santa Cruz Hospital, where the Priest of the Sagrada Família later recognized him He was buried two days later in that same church, following a funeral attended by throngs of people: most of the citizens of Barcelona came out to bid a final farewell to the universal architect that the city had ever known

Oller remind architects not to forget critical thinking when applying new digital technologies.

On 9 March, a new session of the lecture series Foros 2022, organized by the UIC Barcelona School of Architecture, took place at the UIC Barcelona Aula Magna lecture theatre. Under the title "Evolving Technologies,"the event was hosted by architects Andrea Deplazes, lecturer of architecture and construction at the prestigious ETH Zurich Polytechnic Institute (Switzerland), and Jordi Fauli i Oller, director, and coordinator of construction work at the Sagrada Familia. Lecturer Juan Trias de Bes, director of the series, moderated the session.

In their speech, both speakers agreed on the wide range of opportunities that new digital technologies have opened up in architecture and construction Still, at the same time, theystressed the need for architectsnot to abandoncritical thinking intheirprofession.

Jordi Fauli i Ollerpresented concrete examplesof how new digital technologyisbeing applied to the audience at the Sagrada Familia site. These included digital scanning techniques, experimentation with new materials, robotic construction techniques, and the pre-assembly of prototypes and construction elements. "The construction of the Sagrada Familia hasalwaysbeen a challenge.In our case, the use of new technologyhas alwaysbeen focused onpreserving Gaudí'soriginal plan and understanding the geometrical complexityof the temple,"he said.

Andrea Deplazes described some of the projects based on experimentation with new design and digital manufacturing tools that are being developed by his firm Bearth +Deplazes in collaboration with ETH Zurich studies.One that stood out wasthe "New Monte Rosa Hut"project, a mountaineering hut built at an altitude of over 2,000 meters using a parametric design of prefabricated wooden sections. "The most interesting part of the project was working with the help of students, who learned that parametric design is about critical thinking, not simplycombining elementsarbitrarily.The role of the architect doesnot change,"he explained.At the end of his speech, Deplazes announced the upcoming creation of the Spanish Institute for Technologies and Roboting inArchitecture,whichwill be based in Pamplona.

A facade is a view that a few towers combine and create for the viewer The Sagrada Familia has three significant views, each dedicated to a different aspect of the life of Jesus. Four of the eight complete towers are part of the Nativity facade, and four are part of the Passion facade

The Nativity Facade,facing east,is the oldest among the three and is dedicated to the birth of Jesus

The Passion Facade,facing west, is dedicated to Christ's Passion/ death/ resurrection.

The third is the Glory Facade, facing south, which will act as the main facade of the basilica and is dedicated to the glorious nature of Jesus even after his death

Inspiration from Nature

The elements of nature in Gaudi's work can also be called Biomimetic architecture As a rule in the structure, Gaudi avoided straight lines and angles because one barely finds any in nature.

Two pillars are shown to be held by a tortoise and a turtle at the base representing the earth and the sea

The columns are created as tree trunks to give visitors the feeling of standing deep in a forest. They also branch out, creating an illusion of a canopy of palm trees

Gaudí's Sagrada Familia in Barcelona has illuminated the terminals on the Evangelists Luke and Mark towers, celebrating the completion of these two new structures that reach 135 meters in height. Action should be grounded in the UN Charter, the Organization?s founding document, and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which turns 75 this year ?When I look at human rights in the broadest sense ? with a 21st century lens ? Recommit to the UN Charter

The Secretary-General called for ?a holistic view of the peace continuum?that identifies root causes of conflict and focuses on prevention, mediation, reconciliation, peacebuilding and greater participation of women and young people These are among the UN?s proposed New Agenda for Peace, aimed at addressing both old and new threats, and maximizing coalitions for diplomacy, as evidenced by the Black Sea Grain Initiative which is operating even amid the war in Ukraine

Nuclear war risk

This year also marks the 75th anniversary of UN Peacekeeping, which will see increased commitment to reform, he added. Mr. Guterres also called for bringing disarmament and arms control ?back to the centre? to both reduce strategic threats from nuclear arms and work towards their total elimination

?We are at the highest risk in decades of a nuclear war that could start by accident or design,?he warned, urging countries with nuclear arms to renounce these ?unconscionable weapons?

Transform global finance

With poverty and hunger rising, developing countries drowning in debt, and social safety nets frayed, among other signs, the Secretary-General called for ?radical transformation? of the global financial architecture This will require new commitment and resolve, including to address the appalling inequalities and injustices exposed by the COVID-19 pandemic and the response to the global crisis.

New determination will also be needed to ensure developing countries have a greater voice in global financial institutions, and that vulnerable nations, including middle-income countries, can have access to debt relief and restructuring Multilateral Development Banks in particular, must change their business model and leverage their funds to attract more private capital that can be invested to help developing countries achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)before the 2030 deadline.

?Without fundamental reforms, the richest countries and individuals will continue to pile up wealth, leaving crumbs for the communities and countries of the Global South,?he cautioned

Shift to green energy

He said global emissions must be halved this decade, including through ?far more ambitious action?in shifting from fossil fuels to renewable energy, especially in the G20 group of industrialized nations Additionally, businesses, cities, regions and financial institutions that have pledged net-zero carbon emissions, must present their transition plans,with credible and ambitious targets, by this September

?I have a special message for fossil fuel producers and their enablers scrambling to expand production and raking in monster profits If you cannot set a credible course for net-zero, with 2025 and 2030 targets covering all your operations, you should not be in business,?said Mr.Guterres.

Deliver on COP27 pledges

Climate action is impossible without adequate finance, and the Secretary-General urged richer countries to, at minimum, deliver on promises made at the UN COP27 climate change conference in Egypt last year These commitments include establishing a fund to address loss and damage, doubling adaptation funding, and advancing plans on early warning systems globally within the next five years

The Secretary-General will convene a Climate Ambition Summit in September, ahead of the COP28 conference in the United Arab Emirates in December It will be open to all government, business and society leaders, he said, though under one condition: ?Show us accelerated action in this decade and renewed ambitious net zero plans ? or please don? t show up.?

Diversity under attack

Turning to his fourth priority, Mr Guterres spoke of how respect for diversity and the universality of cultural rights are under attack, as evidenced in part by the rise in antisemitism, anti-Muslim bigotry, the persecution of Christians, racism and white supremacist ideology At the same time, ethnic and religious minorities, refugees, migrants, indigenous people and the LGBTQI-plus community, are increasingly targeted for hate,both online and off.

Meanwhile, many people in positions of power are profiting from caricaturing diversity as a threat, sowing division and hatred, while social media platforms use algorithms that amplify toxic ideas and funnel extremist views into the mainstream

Gender discrimination is global, he said, and things are getting worse.

?We face an intense pushback against the rights of women and girls. Women?s sexual and reproductive rights and legal protections are under threat. Mr. Guterres also pledged to ?double down?on support for measures towards greater gender equality, including quotas to close gaps in women?s representation, in elections, corporate board rooms and peace negotiations

He reported on threats such as repressive laws that restrict freedom of expression, new technologies that serve as a guise for controlling freedom of assembly or even movement, and the increase in attacks against the media Through the Secretary-General's Call to Action for Human Rights, the UN is working to advance fundamental freedoms, promote civil society participation, and protect civic space around the world.

Born Jean-Louis Kerouac, Kerouac is the most famous native son of Lowell, Massachusetts His parents had immigrated as very young children from the Province of Quebec, Canada, and Kerouac spoke a local French Canadian-American dialect before he spoke English. He was a football star at Lowell High School and, upon graduation in 1939, was awarded a scholarship to Columbia University. However, after an injury sidelined him on the football team, Kerouac grew unhappy with Columbia and dropped out of school. During this period in New York City, Kerouac became friends with the poet Allen Ginsberg and the novelist William S. Burroughs, Herbert Huncke, and others who would be associated with the "Beat Generation."

During World War II, he briefly joined the Merchant Marine and the U S Navy, and after the war, in 1947, he met Neal Cassady, with whom he would, in the late 1940s, begin crisscrossing the country by automobile.

Kerouac wrote his first novel, "The Town and the City," about his struggle to balance his family's expectations with his unconventional life, published in 1950 with Ginsberg's help

Kerouac took several cross-country trips with Cassady during this time, which became the basis for his most famous work, "On The Road"The manuscript ? presented to his editor on a single, unbroken roll of paper, the scroll later exhibited to record crowds in Lowell ? was rejected Six years passed before it was published in 1957 In the years between, Kerouac followed Ginsberg and Cassady to San Francisco, and the term "Beat Generation," which Kerouac coined, gained popularity When Kerouac finally broke through with the release of "On The Road," he was faced with challenges presented by the fame that followed as he tried to live up to the image portrayed in his novels and faced criticism from the literary establishment for being part of what was considered a fad. He would go on to publish additional novels, many of which used settings based on Lowell ? including "Doctor Sax," "The Subterraneans," "The Dharma Bums," and his final great work, "Big Sur." He settled in Florida with his wife, Stella Sampas, and his mother, where he died in 1969 at age 47. He was buried in Lowell.

Even after his death, Kerouac's popularity continues "On The Road" has remained widely read, and a new film adaptation of the novel starring Garrett Hedlund and Kristen Stewart recently premiered at the Cannes Film Festival. Kerouac was named one of the most important figures of the 20th century by LIFE Magazine and The Times of London. His interest in Kerouac has grown with the publication of his letters, poetry, spiritual writings, early novels, and more from his remarkable literary archive. LOWELL ? At St. Jean Baptiste Parish, in the heart of The Acre neighborhood, author Jack Kerouac served as an altar boy. The church was also the site of his funeral service when he died in 1969.

As it was for many other French-Canadian immigrants, the now-vacant church was a community center. But the Jack Kerouac Foundation has plans to breathe new life into the church in honor of the famous writer.

The foundation announced its plans earlier this year to convert the church into a museum and performing arts center, retaining much of the historical nature of the building ? including its organ ? while adding modern elements, like a glass structure.

While very early in the process, the foundation has recently partnered with architecture firm Solomon Corwell Buenz, who created a series of renderings depicting the potential new attraction.

Sylvia Cunha, director of marketing and development of the Jack Kerouac Estate, has been the leading force behind the project and sees it as an opportunity to revitalize The Acre

When visiting Lowell and learning more about Kerouac, tourists sometimes don't know "where to start their Kerouac journey,"Cunha said, but this museum would serve as their central point

"This is Jack. He's our guy,"Cunha said. "People like to claim them, but he's ours."

The museum, located on the ground floor, would house several items related to Kerouac and his legacy In contrast, the other building floors would belong to a performance center with an upper balcony and rooftop access. There will also, of course, be a bookstore and café.

Cunha said she anticipates the project to cost up to $15 million

Bryan Irwin, the principal architect at Solomon Corwell Buenz, said the firm intentionally aimed to create contrast by adding newer-looking design elements to the historic character and façade of the church.

In researching Kerouac and his legacy, Irwin said he recognized the somewhat complicated connection Kerouac had with his hometown and his Catholic upbringing. He wanted to illustrate that visually in a "play of old and new."

"It's quite clear that Lowell was very formative to what made Jack Kerouac Jack Kerouac," Irwin said. "This idea of trying to express some tension in the design, something about relationships. Kerouac's relationship to the church, Kerouac's relationship to the neighborhood, Kerouac's relationship to the city and the people he knew growing up."

Given its

location, Irwin said they also plan to engage UMass Lowell in project discussions

According to the foundation's press release, the church was deconsecrated in 2004 and has remained closed.

"Preserving history is important," said Jim Sampas, CEO of the foundation and literary executor of the Jack Kerouac Estate.

"That's very sacred ground for Jack," Sampas said of the church "All we're looking to do is do it justice and try and create something very welcoming."

The performance center should be a cultural hub and an opportunity for young to engage with the city's history, Sampas said

He said he's "very, very optimistic" about the process thus far, having received plenty of positive feedback and support from residents. Still, it's "a matter of putting the pieces together." The performance center, he hopes, can draw young people to the site as both audience members and performers

"I think it would be essential to not only the church itself and putting something special at that historic landmark, but also the area,"Sampas said. "I feel this will be an epicenter of creative voices worldwide and draw a large crowd to Lowell "

State Sen. Ed Kennedy, U.S. Rep. Lori Trahan, and other local political leaders "understand the importance" of the museum and have advocated for funding over the last several months, Cunha said.

By engaging young Lowell residents and showing them Kerouac's legacy, Cunha said they hope to "find the next Jack."

"It's such a great artists' community already here in Lowell, whether it be Western Ave or Mill No 5,"Cunha said "It's just such a great community, and to have him and that building be a part of it."

Brazilian director Walter Salles presents On the road in Competition, a road movie adapted from one of Jack Kerouac's most famous novels, and a founding document for the Beat Generation

'Constance Spry' was introduced when the shrub rose was out of style, and the hybrid tea rose to be the most popular rose with gardeners The new cultivar renewed the popularity of the more old-fashioned type of rose

Constance Spry' is a vigorous, spreading shrub, 8 to 20 ft (243?609 cm) in height, with a 6 to 8 ft spread (182?243 cm) It has been described as a "lanky grower " It can be grown as a climber or large shrub

It blooms in clusters of medium to large, fully double, cupped, and globular flowers The blooms are pale pink on the outside and a deeper, darker pink within. The rose is noted for its strong, distinctive "myrrh-like" scent, a characteristic inherited by many of its descendants. It blooms once a year for four weeks in late spring or early summer The plant has abundant foliage and flexible canes that are easy to train

'Constance Spry' was the first rose developed commercially by David C.H. Austin, an amateur rose breeder at the time, living in Shropshire, England Austin was interested in developing new rose cultivars that look and smell like old-fashioned roses. One of his early successes was crossing the Gallica rose, Rosa ?Belle Isis? , and the floribunda, Rosa ?Dainty Maid ?Among the resulting seedlings was a strong, sweet-smelling rose with large pink flowers. Austin showed the new cultivar to his friend and legendary horticulturalists, Graham Thomas, who showed the rose to Hillings Nursery. The nursery introduced the new cultivar in 1961 'Constance Spry' is considered the first of the modern ?English Roses.?

Developed at a time when the hybrid tea rose was the most common style marketed to gardeners, the success of 'Constance Spry' renewed the popularity of a more old-fashioned type of rose The rose is named after gardening educator, author, and florist Constance Spry Spry collected old roses from the 1930s and 1940s and traveled extensively through Britain during World War II, giving talks to women's groups on gardening and flower arranging She was a talented flower arranger and wrote many popular books on the subject

Despite its only once-a-year flowering, the charm of 'Constance Spry's old-fashioned appearance proved popular enough to prove a market for "reproduction" style roses. Austin continued his breeding program with 'Constance Spry' and was further crossed with both modern and older roses, resulting in the fully remontant Rosa 'Wife of Bath' (1969), Rosa 'The Yeoman,' 1969 and Rosa 'Chaucer' (1970), from which many of his later roses descended 'Constance Spry' was awarded the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit in 1993

In 1914, as the Great War ravaged Europe, 28-year-old Constance Marr was appointed secretary of the Dublin Red Cross. Constance belonged to the first generation of women with enough hard-won currency to leave their husbands. So, in an age when the divorce rate was less than 0.25%, she closed the door on an abusive six-year marriage. Constance spent a decade as a successful career woman before the phrase was coined. In 1917, she took a senior position at the Ministry of Aircraft Production In 1921, she became headmistress of the Homerton and South Hackney Day Continuation School in east London. And in 1926, she broke with convention by taking a new last name ? despite not being married to its owner.

Constance ? now Spry ? opened her first flower shop, Flower Decoration, two years later. Almost immediately, her revolutionary approach to floristry garnered interest amongst the Glitterati. She democratised the form, marrying traditional flowers of choice with 'unusual' and uncelebrated plant material like kale and pussy willow Inspired by the Old Masters of the Dutch tradition, her work was at once vibrant and subtle, wild and elegant. She collected unconventional vessels ? from jam jars to attic curios ? in which to house these creations.

Spry was the first 'domestic goddess' ? the author of thirteen books, responsible for the flowers at Queen Elizabeth II's coronation and the famous 'Coronation Chicken.' She was also a revolutionary figure whose approach to aesthetics, gender, and sexuality was, perhaps, more in-line with the decade she had just missed out on. Constance passed away in 1960. The uniquely imaginative Baz Luhrmann (Moulin Rouge!, Australia) tackles F. The film starts with a shot of the flashing green light in East Egg, Long Island, as Nick Carraway (Tobey Maguire) says how his father told him always to see the good in others. Nick adds that there was only one person he saw good in Gatsby He is seen in the Perkins Sanitarium talking to a doctor, whose records indicate that Nick is there due to his alcoholism, among other things.

Nick takes us back to the spring of 1922 when Wall Street was booming, and bootleggers were in business due to the alcohol ban Nick moves to a cottage on Long Island in West Egg, saying he was ambitious as he started working as a bond broker for Wall Street after initially wanting to be a writer This cottage was next door to Gatsby's mansion.

Nick goes across the bay to visit his cousin Daisy (Carey Mulligan) and her blue-blooded husband Tom Buchanan (Joel Edgerton), who went to Yale with Nick Daisy introduces Nick to Jordan Baker (Elizabeth Debicki), a golfer Over dinner, we learn that Tom is arrogant and racist, remarking on the rise of the colored empire He gets a phone call, and Jordan tells Nick that Tom is having an affair Later, Nick walks with Daisy, who says she has become cynical lately Nick asks about her daughter, and Daisy mentions she is glad she had a girl and hopes she can be a fool because, in her words, that's the best thing a girl in this world can be Nick returns home and notices a figure standing on the pier and looking and reaching toward the green light,and Nick believes this is Gatsby.

The doctor at the sanitarium convinces Nick to write a novel about his experience

He continues the story by writing about the Valley of Ashes, a desolate part of New York featuring a billboard with two eyes watching over everybody, said to be the eyes of T.J.Eckleburg.Nick and Tom are headed to the Yale Club when they get off the commuter train and head to a car repair garage run by George Wilson (Jason Clarke). Tom chats with him over business matters, and George's wife Myrtle (Isla Fisher) comes downstairs It becomes apparent that she is Tom's mistress She mentions her sister is coming to New York and wants to introduce her to Nick

Later, at an apartment, while Tom and Myrtle are going at it in the bedroom, her sister Catherine (Adelaide Clemens) comes in with two other friends. Myrtle comes out of the bedroom shouting Daisy's name, enraging Tom and causing him to smack her hard across the face. They begin to have a party, and Nick remarks that this is only the second time he's ever been drunk At night, he watches from the window and looks upon the people in the town, saying he finds himself within, and without the world he is in

Nick wakes home and says he can't remember how he got back. He opens the front door to find that he has received an invitation to a party at Gatsby's, saying he was the only one who has ever gotten a direct invitation, as all the other wealthy people in New York just come to his mansion and indulge themselves He goes to the party, which is extravagant and asks around for Gatsby, but nobody has seen him He runs into Jordan, who is also curious to find him They hear rumors such as Gatsby being a German spy or an assassin Eventually, Nick encounters the man himself, Jay Gatsby (Leonardo DiCaprio). Nick tells Jordan that he imagined Gatsby to be older and fatter A man comes by and tells Jordan that Gatsby wishes to speak with her in private.A while later, as the party ends, she tells Nick that she just heard something shocking Before she can say anything else, she is pulled away by a snobby rich man.

The following day Gatsby shows up at Nick's cottage in his Duesenberg and takes Nick on a trip, describing to him "God's truth" about himself. He claims to have come from a wealthy family that is now all dead, and later attended Oxford and went on to become a decorated WWI veteran. He takes Nick into the city to meet with his business partner Meyer Wolfsheim (Amitabh Bachchan) They go into a bar beneath a barbershop where bootlegged alcohol is being sold. We learn that Wolfsheim is rumored to have rigged the 1919 World Series, and Gatsby considers setting Nick up for a business with them Tom Buchanan shows up, at which point Gatsby vanishes.

Nick has lunch with Jordan, who tells him about her conversation with Gatsby. Through a flashback, we learn from Jordan that Gatsby and Daisy were romantically involved five years earlier while living in Louisville, Kentucky, when Gatsby was a war officer When he is called away, she waits for him but eventually meets Tom and is set to marry him Before their wedding, however, she gets a letter from Gatsby, causing Daisy to get cold feet nearly, but she goes on to marry Tom. Gatsby also intentionally bought his mansion across from Daisy's home, hoping to see her. Jordan tells Nick that he wants him to invite Daisy over for tea. He approaches Gatsby that night and says he will do it

The following morning, many people fix Nick's lawn and home, and it's clear that Gatsby intends to have tea at Nick's place instead of his They fix it up and make it look nice, but Gatsby gets nervous He almost leaves until Daisy comes in. Nick brings her inside, but Gatsby has fled She is amazed at all the flowers in the living room, and then Nick hears a knock at the door. It is Gatsby, dripping wet from the pouring rain outside He enters, and Daisy sees him, and they both comment on how glad they are to see each other again The tea time is awkward until Nick leaves them alone by saying he is going into the city When he returns to his house, Gatsby decides to take them to his place, and they spend some time at the beach before returning home He shows Daisy a variety of shirts he possesses, and while she is excited, she starts crying. Nick knows it's sudden for her after five years, but she won't admit that Nick tells some truths about Gatsby His real name is James Gatz, and he came from a low-income family of farmers from North Dakota. He did not see himself as part of that family; as he got older, he set off to accomplish more While riding his boat, he encountered a yacht sailed by a man named Dan Cody (Steve Bisley) The young James Gatz rescued him from a storm and went on to sail with him, adopting some of Cody's customs, like using the term "old sport" (which he frequently calls Nick) After Cody died, he did not receive his inheritance because of Cody's family, so Gatsby made himself a wealthy man.

Gatsby throws another party, this time having Daisy and Tom show up She and Gatsby retreat to a nearby location, where they kiss passionately. Daisy says she wishes they could run away together. His butler pulls Gatsby out to settle a business dispute After the party, Gatsby believes Daisy did not have a good time He tells Nick that he needs her to tell Tom she doesn't love him so they can go back to Louisville and get married Nick tells him he can't repeat the past, but Gatsby insists he can.He notes the first time he kissed Daisy when they first met, and Gatsby feels he had already married her.Before leaving, he tells Nick he is wrong about the past.

Gatsby stops throwing parties for a while One day, which happens to be the hottest day of the summer, he invites Nick, Daisy, Tom, and Jordan over for lunch Gatsby tries to hold Daisy's hand, but she panics, claims she is bored and wants to go into the city. Tom notices that she is feeling something for Gatsby, so he agrees to go into the city. Gatsby and Daisy drive off in his car while Tom takes Nick and Jordan They stop for gas at George Wilson's garage, and he has learned of Myrtle's infidelity, but not that she's sleeping with Tom.

The group meets up at a hotel where a man is cutting up a large block of ice to pass around because of the heat and for drinks. Tom starts to antagonize Gatsby slowly, hoping for a confrontation. He mocks his use of "old sport," claiming he lied about Oxford, and accuses him of bootlegging with Wolfsheim Gatsby hits back by saying Daisy loves him and not Tom, putting her in an uncomfortable position. As Tom continues to egg him on, Gatsby snaps throw the alcohol and grab Tom, screaming at him and nearly hitting him. This frightens Daisy and Jordan. She and Gatsby leave. Tom decides to open a bottle of liquor and offers Nick some He remarks that he just remembered that day was his birthday

At night, Myrtle is being abused by George as he asks her where she got her pearls. She runs out into the street as she sees the Duesenberg coming, thinking it's Tom The car speeds as Gatsby grabs the wheel, trying to swerve, but the car strikes Myrtle and kills her instantly.Tom, Nick, and Jordan drive by the scene and discover Myrtle's corpse as the police are on the scene Tom is visibly distraught but denies having known her well.He goes to George, who is grieving.Tom tells him that Gatsby drove the car that hit Myrtle.

The Buchanans go back to their place Jordan invites Nick inside, but he refuses As he leaves, he hears Gatsby calling to him He tells Nick that Daisy was driving after leaving the city to ease her tension, but although he tried to move the car, they could not stop hitting Myrtle Nick walks away, seeing Tom and Daisy talking,apparently having reconciled.

Nick meets up with Gatsby later as he fixes the Duesenberg and covers it. He learns more about Gatsbythe whole truth Gatsby was always after Daisy and hoped she would wait for him after he came back from the war. Although penniless, he wanted to return to her, but she had already married Tom. Nick realizes Gatsby truly loves Daisy, and he only throws the parties in the hopes that she will show up for one of them

That morning, Gatsby's gardener comes in and says he is to drain the pool before the leaves fall Gatsby decides to swim before that and asks Nick to join him, but he declines. Before finally leaving, Nick tells Gatsby that the Buchanans are rotten people and that Gatsby is worth more than them They share a friendly wave before departing.

Nick is too distracted at work and hopes Gatsby will call him with good news. At the same time, we see Daisy looking at her phone as she considers calling Gatsby The phone rings at his place, and Gatsby hears it, excited However, he does not see George Wilson behind him, who shoots him in the back He falls into his pool, dead, just as George turns the gun on himself. We also see that Nick, not Daisy, was calling, and he panicked as he heard the gunshots

After Gatsby's death, the media blamed him for the affair with Myrtle and her death Nick is upset that he cannot tell them the truth. His place is bombarded with reporters who ungraciously huddle over his open casket Nick tries to get in touch with Daisy, but she and Tom are leaving with their daughter, packing up everything and having their butler tell Nick they are gone Nick adds that virtually nobody attended Gatsby's funeral except him. He would leave New York and go back to the Midwest, completely disillusioned He also muses that Gatsby could not see that his dream of being with Daisy was behind him

Nick completes his novel by simply titling it "Gatsby" He looks at the cover page and writes something extra, now calling it "The Great Gatsby."

The European Commission has signed a contribution agreement with the European Space Agency to build a national Copernicus data centre in the Philippines, the first of its kind in South-East Asia.With ? 10 million funding from the EU bilateral development cooperation for the Philippines, the EU will support the uptake of Copernicus, its ambitious earth observation programme, strengthening the Philippines?resilience to natural disasters and climate change adaptation

European Commissioner for International Partnerships Jutta Urpilainen said, ?The EU?s Global Gateway is promoting the green and digital twin transition across the Indo Pacific and driving sustainable investments With this new Copernicus centre the Philippine authorities will be better equipped to help people respond to natural disasters and climate change As always, we make the data available for all actors and scientific use.?

The new Copernicus data centre site will enhance the response capability and with that the resilience of the Philippines to natural and man-made disasters through the strategic use of space data This will help reducing vulnerability of the people of the Philippines to climate hazards, support climate adaptation, food security, and environmental protection The primary national partners for the CopPhil programme are the Department of Science and Technology of the government of the Philippines together with the Philippine Space Agency (PhilSA). This programme will be a building block for the future Team Europe Initiative on Digital Transformation and Digitalisation, following a Team Europe approach with possible involvement of Member States.

The Philippines is a pioneer on Copernicus uptake in ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) with the potential for unlocking economic opportunities and scientific benefits at national to regional level Advanced utilisation of Copernicus data and information services will support better policy definition, improved planning,increased transparency,commitment, and accountability.

The Copernicus Programme offers free, full and open data access, enabling public authorities to act quickly and based on scientific information when it comes to emergency management or environmental protection and opening opportunities for the scientific community and the private sector alike.

The contribution agreement was signed by Mr Koen Doens, Director General for International Partnerships at the European Commission and Mr Josef Aschbacher, Director General of the European Space Agency, in the presence of Pablito Mendoza Deputy Chief of Mission and Consul General of the Embassy of the Philippines to Belgium and Luxembourg.
