Autumn / Winter

2013 – 2014

Phizzical in association with the Belgrade Theatre presents

Welcome... Welcome to the Belgrade’s Autumn / Winter Season 2013 – 14. We’ve got a really exciting and varied selection of shows for you in the coming months, including a number of Belgrade Theatre productions. First up is our brand new musical The Prodigals on the Main Stage and then in B2 we have another new show, the Victorian crime melodrama, Charlie Peace: His Amazing Life and Astounding Legend. I know many people will be excited to see our hit Coventry blitz play, One Night in November, which returns to the Main Stage due to popular demand. I’m also pleased to welcome back Belgrade panto legend Iain Lauchlan who will be writing, directing and starring as Dame in this year’s Christmas show, Jack and the Beanstalk. We also have a new B2 Xmas Show written and directed by Nick Walker – the comedy thriller, Oh No It Isn’t! We are very pleased to announce that our recent production of Strindberg’s The Father has been recorded as a radio play by BBC Radio 3, to be aired on 22 September. Director Joe Harmston assembled the original cast for the recording, which included Joe Dixon, as the troubled Captain, and Katy Stephens as his wife, Laura. We’re delighted the show will get to reach new audiences in this way. As always, I’d like to thank you for your continued support of the Belgrade Theatre, which is very much appreciated.

Hamish Glen Artistic Director To help you get the most out of your visit to the Belgrade here are some handy booking tips: • A void queuing at Box Office or on the phone by booking online. It’s cheaper, really easy to do and you can choose your own seats. New shows go on sale online first, so check for the latest additions. • Book equivalent amounts of full price tickets for two or more participating shows in our multi-purchase offer at the off same time and save your full price tickets. • You can enjoy the show from every seat in the main auditorium, but remember the front row of the stalls and the boxes don’t always offer the best view.

Sat 14 – Sat 21 Sept The Kingdom is in turmoil and the fate of a country is at stake. What will happen when the lives of a foolish king, a beautiful princess, her banished husband and a charming rogue collide?

• Shows including the above logo are a part of the Family Arts Festival, 18 Oct – 3 Nov. For information about the festival, please visit www.familyartsfestival.com. • Tickets for first nights, previews and weekday matinees are often available at a discounted rate so go for these options to get the best value.

Power, love and treachery are at the fore when the rebellious Princess Innogen risks her reputation and family honour by marrying without her father’s permission. When her husband falls prey to the manipulations of a rakish and smooth-talking womaniser, her loyalty is tarnished. Innogen is forced to swap her sari for breeches and flee from court. Based on the play by William Shakespeare, the improbable becomes probable in this epic, adventurous romance. Cymbeline is filled with heroic strangers, sinister villains and long-lost brothers. Will the Kingdom have its happily ever after?

The Belgrade Theatre and Inspire present

Written by Ray Goudie and Joe Harmston Directed by Joe Harmston

“Belting baritone arias.” Libby Purves in The Times

“Explosive, stunning, riveting!” Edinburgh Guide

Colonel Luke Gibson is proud to lead the Scottish regiment his family has served in for generations. The two sons he has brought up alone are now young men. While Captain Mike Gibson battles to destroy opium poppy fields in Afghanistan, his brother Kyle fuels his band’s gigs with heroin. When Kyle hits rock bottom, can he return home to the community he has insulted and rejected? How will his brother respond to his needs? How will Colonel Gibson balance his love for two such different sons with his responsibilities to all the soldiers under his command? From its explosive choreographic opening on patrol in Helmand Province, through the comic absurdities of Kyle’s drug-induced hallucinations, The Prodigals drives this extraordinary tale on with stunning new music and dance, and a script that challenges us to explore the toughest of emotional battlegrounds. This fast-moving, highly-energised new musical began life at the Edinburgh Festival. It now begins a new life at the Belgrade.

Coventry, November 1940. Katie, a headstrong 18 year old training to be a teacher, encounters the stranded Michael, an Oxford tutor of Romantic Literature and Language, while waiting for the ‘All Clear’ at a railway station. It’s the beginning of what could be a straightforward love story. But nothing is straightforward in wartime. Unknown to Katie, Michael has been forced to turn his language skills to deciphering codes at Bletchley Park. Katie, who lives with her family in Coventry, has no idea how terrible the threat of war is. But Michael does… Did Winston Churchill have advance warning of the attack on Coventry? Was the city sacrificed for the greater good - or to provoke America into the war? This gripping wartime love story set during the Coventry Blitz is back by popular demand having received an overwhelming response from audiences and critics alike. Age recommendation: 11+

Weds 23 – Sat 26 Oct In Germany in 1938, as the clouds of war gather, a desperate mother forces her nine year old daughter onto a train, sending Eva out of danger and into the arms of strangers. In England, decades later, another mother reluctantly prepares for the departure of her grown-up daughter, as Faith cuts the ties of childhood. Then a chance discovery opens an unhealed wound and a long-buried secret is revealed. The bittersweet experience of every parent as they try to teach their child to survive alone unites these women across the decades.

“… the best play about the pain and passion of mother/daughter relationships …” The Guardian “… extraordinarily skilful and compassionate …” The Daily Telegraph In the nine months before the outbreak of World War II, the Kindertransport rescued almost 10,000, mainly Jewish children from Germany and Austria and ferried them to safety. In the year that marks the 75th anniversary of the Kindertransport, this is a timely and unmissable production of this award-winning play. Deeply moving and critically acclaimed, this modern classic is now central to many school curricula. Age recommendation 11+

Oh No It Isn’t! is the brilliant new comedy thriller written and directed by acclaimed Coventry writer, Nick Walker. Four actors are performing a Christmas panto. For the audience it’s a fun, yuletide treat – for the actors on stage, it’s a matter of life and death! We soon discover that the cast are all embroiled in a plot to kill each other. A prop gun is swapped for the real thing and a poisoned apple is on the menu. Who’s bean-stalking who? Will the Giant come out on top? Or will it be curtains for Daisy the cow? The cry of “He’s behind you!” has never sounded so chilling. As ever, the B2 Xmas Show has been created especially for grown-ups so it’s perfect for office parties or anyone who wants to enjoy a Christmas night out away from the kids. This compact show only lasts around an hour, so it leaves you plenty of time to complete your evening with a few celebratory drinks.

Tues 21 Jan 2014 Olivier Award-winning OperaUpClose return to the Belgrade with their new version of La Traviata, following the huge success of their first visit with La Bohème. La Traviata is the story of Violetta, a so-called ‘fallen woman’ who sacrifices her own happiness for the sake of her lover’s family and future. Set in the prohibition era of speakeasies and bootlegging, with Violetta’s lover Alfredo, a passionate young man whose optimism has been shaken by time at the front in the First World War, Violetta’s gang boss protector ‘the Baron’, and Alfredo’s father, a crooked politician. This new production reveals the hypocrisy and heartache behind the glittering façade of parties. La Traviata has been thrilling audiences for generations. This new version features a stunning young cast whose acting abilities are more than a match for their vocal talents. With Verdi’s sumptuous melodies, accompanied by a trio of clarinet, cello and piano, this production will be every bit as entertaining and moving as La Bohème. This new English version is directed by Robin Norton-Hale with the new orchestration by Harry Blake.

“A huge artistic success.”

The Mail on Sunday

The Guardian

Tues 11 – Sat 15 Feb 2014 Edward Hall’s all-male company Propeller returns to the Belgrade Theatre with two incredibly contrasting comedies, A Midsummer Night’s Dream and The Comedy of Errors. Combining a typically rigorous approach to the text with fast-paced, high energy action, Propeller promises a double bill of comedy and enchantment this February. A Midsummer Night’s Dream is arguably Shakespeare’s most magical play, where love and illusion collide when two pairs of lovers become entangled in fairy mischief on the eve of a royal wedding. Dreams and reality become interchangeable and romantic chaos ensues. Seeing really is believing. In Shakespeare’s smartest and most farcical play, The Comedy of Errors, two sets of estranged twins, separated at birth, find themselves in the same city 25 years later, with hilarious consequences. A series of mistaken identities, assumed personas and wild mishaps bring a family crisis – so complicated that time itself loses the plot – into heart-warming focus. Fortunately the audience is always one step ahead. While the master of the house is out of town to escape the plague, his house-keeper sets up with ‘a cheater and his punk’ as the city’s premier con-man. A full range of alternative services are offered to the citizens who beat a furtive path to their door – anything from the secret of eternal youth, to that recipe of recipes which will turn a tin can into bankable gold. Masters of the ludicrous disguise, the team of con-artists find their multiple deceptions spiralling out of control until they receive some alarming news... Jonson’s brilliant satire burns away the dross, exposing a society whose obsessions make it vulnerable to any well-worked scam. “I have been able to sit in on a dress rehearsal, read-through and visit the workshop to see scenery and costumes being made. There have been talks by Hamish Glen explaining how shows develop and the varied and interesting events have proved a good place to meet like-minded people.” Dot Trailor, member of the Actors’ Circle at the Belgrade Theatre
