Publisher's Note

Celebrating 10 Years of PLAYGROUND I often get a strange look when people ask what I do for a living. "I own a local parenting magazine" isn't a common answer. Nevertheless, that's what I I've been doing for 10 years now. When I had the idea to start the magazine, my son, Kai, was almost 2. At the time, there were no local parenting magazines. As a graphic designer with magazine production experience, I knew that a locally focused magazine for parents was something I could create and definitely something I needed as a parent with a toddler in tow. With only nine months of planning and production time, the first issue of PLAYGROUND Magazine was published in March of 2008. Back then, we were a PLAYGROUND's founder, Heather Reneau, quarterly publication with a core team of three mamas and her two children, Kai (12) and Skyler (5) literally working around the clock with a handful of Photo by Abby Liga Photography contributing writers and photographers — most of whom were volunteering their time to our exciting little start-up publication. It has definitely taken a broad network of local talent to create what I believe to be the best source of local content for parents. I'd like to thank the village of people who have made PLAYGROUND possible. Thank you to my children for inspiring me to create a magazine for Central Florida's parenting community .... to my husband and family for supporting my crazy ideas and truly believing that I can achieve my goals ... to all of the writers, editors, photographers, designers and people who have brought their own skills, ideas and creativity to each assignment ... to the business professionals who have counseled me and given their advice throughout the years ... to the advertisers who have entrusted us with their marketing dollars and made it possible to produce a quality publication that is free to our readers ... to all of the community leaders who agreed to be featured in the pages of our magazine ... and most importantly, to Orlando parents who love reading PLAYGROUND, who tell their friends about us, and who support our advertisers! I'm sure there are probably some apologies due as well. Even though my intentions were PLAYful, I have made so many mistakes along the way, desperately trying to learn from each of them and constantly weighing the balance of business, relationships and my own limitations and stress levels. It hasn't been easy. It's been a privalege to watch Orlando grow and blossom into an amazing place to raise a family. We will be working on several exciting projects this year to celebrate our 10th birthday. A party is definitely in order, and you'll be on the invitation list!

Molli Miller Surf School

It's 2018, and I am trying to help my children have fewer things and more adventures this year. My adventurous daughter asked to try surfing, so I began researching and asking my mom friends about where to go for surf lessons. Enter Molli Miller Surf School (mollifillersurfschool.com). Molli Miller is an Orlando-based woman with impressive surfing credentials. She was a professional surfer with Billabong and traveled the world surfing and running surf camps. Couple that with her experience working at a local elementary school as a certified teacher, and I knew I had found the right instructor for my quirky little wannabe surfer (who isn’t a very strong swimmer). The experience was great. Molli took care of everything: checking tides and surfs to schedule around Avery’s ability level, providing an umbrella and chair for me and supplying

all of the equipment we’d need (including the wetsuit!). She took time to get to know my daughter's interests and her learning style. Avery was able to stand up on a wave by her third try, and by the end of the lesson, she was riding waves all the way into the shore by herself. Best of all, Avery felt so accomplished. We called almost every member of our extended family to tell them all about her day. Chances are that if I run into any of you in the next few weeks, she’ll probably tell you all about it, too. Molli Miller Surf School offers private and group lessons, camps and package deals for all ages and ability levels (Molli loves teaching adults, too!). Power Your Lunchbox Stuck in a lunchbox rut and need ideas for the new year? Produce for Kids has created these fun foods to entertain and properly nourish your growing family. Recipes provided by produceforkids.com

BANANA SUSHI ROLLS

BBQ CHICKEN CHOPPED SALAD IN A JAR

ALPHABET VEGGIE SOUP

Kids won’t be able to resist this banana sushi! It’s simple – roll, cut and add sliced strawberries and kiwi for added flair. These sushi rolls will keep in lunchboxes until lunchtime. If your school is a nutfree zone, swap the peanut butter for soy butter or sun butter instead!

A bagged salad, leftover rotisserie chicken and a few other simple ingredients make this lunch come together in no time. This recipe packs perfectly in lunchboxes or layered in a Mason jar for mom or dad.

Keep your little ones warm in the wintertime with this healthy and hearty soup. Kids will have fun spelling out words with the pasta letters and trying out a variety of veggies!

Ingredients: • 1 large (8-inch) whole wheat tortilla • 3 tablespoons natural peanut butter, divided • 1 GROW banana, peeled • 1 strawberry, sliced • 1/2 Zespri® SunGold™ kiwi, sliced • 1 tablespoon unsweetened shredded coconut Directions: 1. Lay tortilla on flat surface. Spread with half of the peanut butter. Place banana on one end of tortilla and roll up. Cut into even slices and place strawberries and kiwi sliced on top. 2. Microwave remaining peanut butter on HIGH 30 seconds or until melted, and drizzle over banana sushi. 3. Top with shredded coconut.

Ingredients: • 1 package Earthbound Farm® Organic BBQ Ranch Chopped Salad Kit • 2 cups shredded rotisserie chicken • 1 avocado, diced • 1/2 cup shredded low-fat cheddar cheese • 1 can (14.5-ounce) chickpeas, drained and rinsed • 1 bell pepper, diced • 2 large hard-cooked eggs, diced Directions: Place salad in a large bowl and top with chicken, avocado, cheese, chickpeas, pepper and eggs. Add dressing from salad kit and mix well.

Ingredients: • 1 tablespoon olive oil • 3 carrots, diced • 2 cups chopped kale • 8 ounces green beans, ends trimmed, chopped • 1 russet potato, peeled, diced • 1/2 medium onion, finely chopped • 2 quarts low-sodium vegetable broth • 1 can (14-ounce) no-saltadded diced tomatoes • 1 teaspoon salt • 1/2 teaspoon pepper • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder • 1 cup uncooked alphabet pasta Directions: Heat oil in large pot over medium heat. Add carrots, kale, green beans, potatoes and onion, and cook 5 minutes or until softened. Add broth, tomatoes, salt, pepper and garlic powder. Bring to a boil, reduce heat to low and simmer, covered, 20 minutes. Stir in pasta and cook 10 minutes, or until cooked.

Produce for Kids is running a Power Your Lunchbox Promise (poweryourlunchbox. com) from January 8–February 18 to help families get re-inspired for the new year! Families can make the promise, and the Power Your Lunchbox Promise partners will donate to Feeding America’s programs to help families and children. There is also a teacher section on the site to help bring healthy ideas to the classroom.

Did you know there are benefits to eating in-season produce?

EASY LUNCH STACKERS BENTO BOX

UNDER THE SEA BENTO BOX

Kids will love to assemble their own stackers at lunch! Add even more veggies by using sliced carrots and tomatoes or customize using their favorite veggies.

The perfect lunch for any ocean-animalloving kid! Creative and fun, yet only takes minutes to put together!

Ingredients: • 2 slices low-sodium ham, rolled, cut into 4 pieces • 1 slice low-fat cheddar cheese, cut into 4 pieces • 4 slices cucumber • 8 whole wheat crackers • 1 medium banana • 3 mini sweet peppers, sliced • 2 tablespoons low-fat ranch dressing Directions: 1. Place ham, cheese, cucumber and crackers in stacks in large section of bento box. 2. Place banana in one small section of the bento box and peppers and dressing in another small section.

Ingredients: • 2 tablespoons peanut butter • 2 slices whole-wheat bread • 2 strawberries, sliced • 1/2 banana, sliced • 8 sugar snap peas • 1 slice low-fat American cheese • 1 clementine, peeled, segmented Directions: 1. Spread peanut butter on one side of each slice of bread. Top with strawberry and banana slices and close to make a sandwich. Use your favorite ocean animal cookie cutter to create a fun shape. 2. Place sandwich in a large bento container and arrange sugar snap peas to resemble seaweed underneath. 3. Slice cheese into small triangles for sails. Using a toothpick, attach the cheese sails to your clementine segments to create mini sailboats.

• It tastes better! This is a great time to introduce new fruits and vegetables to your kids because they are getting the best flavor. • Your bank account will thank you. Fruits and vegetables that are in season are sold at a reasonable price point in the grocery store. • You get the max nutrients. Produce that is purchased in season is more likely to be consumed close to harvesting and is higher in nutritional value. Many antioxidants (like vitamin C, folate and carotenes) decline during the transport or storage process. • It helps the environment. It takes lots of steps to get produce that is not in season to your grocery store/ dinner table because that produce has to come from other climates. Buying in season helps eliminate the additional transport and extra energy it takes to bring out-of-season produce to you.

Here’s the in-season produce in Florida for January and February: avocados, cauliflower, mushrooms, squash, bell peppers, celery, oranges, strawberries, broccoli, eggplant, tomatoes, snap beans, lettuce, sweet corn, peanuts, tangerines, passion fruit and more!

5 Heart-Healthy Tips for Kids From the pediatric cardiologists at Florida Hospital for Children In celebration of American Heart Month

Candy conversation hearts and boxes of valentines will soon line store shelves, reminding you to celebrate love. Instead of chocolate hearts, celebrate real hearts – yours and your children’s. Heart disease is the leading cause of death among men and women in the United States.* Are you doing everything you can to keep your family’s hearts healthy? Recent studies show the early stages of coronary artery disease, which can lead to a heart attack over time, can start as young as age 12, which means a heart-healthy lifestyle for your kids must start now. Share the following tips with your family and resolve to make them habits this year. SEND LOVE There are so many ways to share love every day—a kiss for mom and dad, a hug for grandma or a high-five with a friend or teacher. Encourage your little one to show appreciation and gratitude daily, even if it’s via email or text. Of course, don’t forget Valentine’s Day! EAT RED Think apples, red peppers, strawberries and tomatoes. Red foods such as these are high in vitamins and fiber and should be incorporated into each meal. STAY HYDRATED Say no to sugary drinks such as soda and juice. Water is all kids need! Same goes for moms and dads. BE ACTIVE Sitting for too long isn’t good for your heart. Limit screen time to one hour per day and take part in fun, outside activities with your kids that get everyone moving. The American Heart Association’s guidelines recommend that kids get at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day. It’s recommended for teens to get at least 30 to 40 minutes of cardiovascular exercise (where their hearts rates go up) at least four days per week. SLEEP The more sleep, the better for rest and recovery. Stick to a nightly routine that may include reading books or singing songs to help children fall asleep. As a parent, you are the primary decision maker over the foods and activities in your children’s lives, and you can lead by example. As you know, it’s much easier to create good habits when you’re young than it is to try to change bad habits in adulthood. For more heart healthy tips, follow @FloridaHospitalforChildren on Facebook or visit FloridaHospitalforChildren.com. Also, go easy on the chocolate hearts. *Source: American Heart Association

Taylor Merriam Creates Cookbook for a Cause Words by Tracey C. Velt

A

fter suffering debilitating seizures, Taylor Merriam (12) was diagnosed with autism and epilepsy. She found baking to be a therapeutic outlet, so she wrote her own cookbook to raise money for an organization that matches children with service animals.

“Imagine your child having debilitating seizures almost daily from ages 3 to 10,” says Matt, dad to Taylor Merriam. But Taylor is a warrior and found her passion for something that not only tastes good but serves as therapy for her as well—baking. Taylor Merriam Photo: Alexander Dominguez

Taylor’s mom, Theresa (Taylor also has a 15-year-old brother, Matthew), says that Taylor started baking as therapy two years ago. That’s the same time she started a new medication called Charlotte’s Web, which dramatically reduced her seizures. “Taylor would bake the same box of cupcakes and memorize the recipe (Taylor’s memory is poor due to her seizures). Little did we know that this therapy goal would turn into a passion for baking—so much that I centered her academics around baking.” In fact, Taylor loved baking so much that she started making baking videos on a popular app called Musical.ly. “To our shock, it became popular. Taylor has high functioning autism and struggles with maintaining conversations, but going live on the Musical.ly app has helped her in that area as well,” says Theresa.

Taylor and her dog, Heaven

Taylor is now a crown-verified Musical.ly representative with more than 180,000 followers. She’s also a two-time gold

medalist who represented the state of Florida at the 2016 and 2017 State Special Olympics meet. Now she’s adding “author” to her list of accomplishments. After Taylor’s service dog, Heaven, passed away in 2016, according to Theresa, “Our hearts were broken, as on many occasions, Heaven saved Taylor’s life by detecting when a seizure would happen.” Heaven also detected that Taylor stopped breathing on a few occasions. To raise money for a new dog, Taylor decided to create a cookbook called Just Keep Baking. What started as a simple fundraiser has turned into a way to “give hope to people living with a disability and their caregivers,” says Theresa. The cookbook, featuring recipes from Taylor, will be available soon. A portion of the money raised will be donated to 4 Paws for Ability (4pawsforability.org), which enriches the lives of children with disabilities by training and placing quality, task-trained service dogs. “So much has changed in the last few years,” says Theresa. “While Taylor did experience 10 months of seizure freedom, with hormone changes her seizures are back. They are not as bad as before but significant enough that we feel getting a service dog is what we need, as her seizures most often come at night while she sleeps.” The cookbook will help Taylor and other children with disabilities have access to the service dogs they need. You can order Just Keep Baking on Amazon.com. You can also follow Taylor on YouTube.com, Instagram, Facebook and Musical.ly @taytaysnummies.

Fighting the Good Fight, 9 Rounds at a Time Johanna Signori reminds us that even busy moms can lead a healthy lifestyle. Words by Dana Nichols | Photos by Jessica Friend

I

t was faith that called Johanna and Damien Signori to move across the world from their home in France to sunny Orlando. Just a year ago, through their church, they made a big journey to the United States. Looking for new opportunities and experiences, they decided to open a gym. This past May, they opened 9Round, a cardio fitness studio in Baldwin Park.

9Round (9round.com) offers a unique blend of cardio kickboxing and personal training. There are no classes. Members come and get their 30-minute workout in when it fits their schedule. Workouts are new each day to keep things interesting. As long-time devotees of a health and fitness lifestyle, Johanna and Damien loved the concept of 9Round. Johanna is a former professional dancer, and Damien is a professional football player turned personal trainer. They live and breathe the concepts at the gym: an active fitness regimen and a commitment to healthy eating. But as parents to two daughters, Naomi (5) and Tahissa (12), they know how busy life can be and how difficult it can be to maintain a balance.

Johanna knows firsthand how hard it can be, especially for moms. Johanna tells of the advice her mom gave her when she became a mother: You must fight for yourself. She explains, motherhood can make taking care of yourself seem like an option, and you mustn’t let it. She knows if she is making time for herself, her family will be happy because she’s able to do more when she’s less stressed and feeling good. Carving out time for things like getting her nails done, going for a walk or even going to the grocery store alone are all ways Johanna makes time for herself. And of course, working out at the gym is key. Though she gets some workout time in while demonstrating the moves for members, Johanna still makes time to complete a full workout for herself. For Johanna, one of her favorite parts of owning the gym is seeing how it builds in family bonding time. Couples come and work out together. She loves to see members bringing their kids (10 years old and up) to work out alongside them. Throughout our conversation, people wave hello and stop to talk to Johanna. Johanna and her family have only been in Orlando for a year, but they’ve already made themselves right at home, finding community, friendship and a thriving business in Baldwin Park.

DANA NICHOLS is an exhausted mommy of two, but she’s enjoying every moment. She loves mom life, shopping, eating, taking photos and exploring Central Florida. Dana catalogs all of these things on Momlando.com.

30 Active Ways to Connect Words by Sandi Haustein

You're probably aware of the importance of physical activity for adults, but did you know that the World Health Organization recommends that children ages 5-17 get at least one hour of moderate to vigorous exercise every day? Being active helps your kids build strong bones and muscles as well as develop a healthy cardiovascular system and fight depression. If your children are more interested in sitting in front of a screen than playing outside, you're not alone! Sometimes all the motivation your kids need is for you to incorporate exercise into your family life. Besides the physical benefits, stepping away from the screens can help you connect in a deeper way.

YOUR ACTIVITY CHECK LIST

Enjoy the Florida-winter with a walk on the beach. Canaveral National Seashore has over 25 miles of untouched Florida coastline. Ride bikes on a trail: West Orange Trail (22 miles), Little Econ Greenway (7.4 miles), Cady Way Trail (6.5 miles), Lake Apopka Loop Trail (3 miles), Lake Baldwin Trail (2.5 miles), Orlando Urban Trail (2 miles), Seminole Wekiva Trail and Cross Seminole Trail. Invite another family to play a game of soccer in the backyard. See who can jump rope the longest. Take your phones and go geocaching. Go skating: Semoran Skateway, Let’s Skate, Astro Skate or go ice skating at RDV Ice Den. Channel your inner Spiderman on a rock-climbing wall: Aiguille Rock Climbing, Planet Obstacle, O2B Kids or the Oviedo Aquatics Center. Turn on some music and have a dance party. Time yourselves to see who can do a wall sit the longest. Take your older kids to play paintball at Battleground Orlando. Play a fitness game on your Wii or Xbox. Find a rope, divide into two teams and play tug-of-war. Take the family bowling: Splitzville at Disney Springs, Firkin & Kegler in East Orlando, Aloma Bowl near downtown or Kings Bowl or Main Event Entertainment on I-Drive.

Have a jumping jacks competition. Join a game of frisbee golf: Bill Frederick Park at Turkey Lake, Barnett Park, UCF, River City Nature Park (Debary), Airport Lakes Park (near the airport), Shane Kelly Park (Oviedo) or 65th Infantry Veterans Park (Kissimmee). Organize a neighborhood kickball game. Play a game of tag. Take the family downhill skiing at WinterClub Indoor Ski & Snowboard. Learn to water ski at Orlando Watersports Complex. Set up an obstacle course and see who can clear it the fastest. Go to an open play time at A Kids Gym every Friday from 5-6:30 p.m. Jump on a trampoline: SkyZone, AirHeads, Outer Limitz, Hukoo’s or Planet Obstacle. Ride your bikes at ORL BMX track. Take a family group surf lesson at Molli Miller Surf School. Grab some racquets and play a game of tennis. Go on a Saturday morning hike. Learn to rollerblade. Go on a walk around the block after dinner. Organize some relay races with your kids and their friends. Sign up and train for a family 5k race together this year.

SANDI HAUSTEIN is a freelance writer and a mom of four. Her family loves going on adventures and walking around the block after dinner.

33 PLAYGROUND Jan / Feb 2018

We asked our friend Lauren Nelson, a runner and a mom, about the best family-friendly 5K events around town. Here are her recommendations: • The Smile Mile (March 3) is a 1-mile race just for kids. They do waves of runners by age. There are lots of vendors set up to provide free snacks and activities. • The Riverside Dash (April 8) is a nice race in Sanford that takes you by the water. It’s a 5K, 15K, and kids dash. They also served pancakes to runners after the races. • Run for the Trees (April 28) in Winter Park is cool because part of the run is through Genius Drive (a private road rarely accessible to the general public), and there are usually peacocks visible on the route. Plus, you get a tiny tree at the end to plant at home! • I think the Watermelon 5K (July 4) in Winter Park is a fun one too! It includes a really entertaining watermelon eating contest. It’s a 4th of July holiday race, so you also see a lot of patriotic attire. • Run Nona is a very family friendly race that is usually held in September in Lake Nona. They have a 5K plus a race for younger kids that is sponsored by Nemours Children’s Hospital. It’s a big block party at the end with food, entertainment and activities. • The Greg Warmoth Reindeer Run is a run through SeaWorld that usually takes place in December. This race has a fun holiday theme.

Say Yes to Yoga for Families Words by Sara Barry | Photos by Jessica Friend

Lisa Rosen, pre-school yoga teacher at the Jewish Community Center, practicing yoga at home with her two young children.

I

f you think yoga is about flexibility, challenging Find Serenity, Strength and Self-Confidence poses and a Zen attitude, you’ve got part of it. Yoga has physical and emotional benefits for

people of all ages, including children. “Getting kids involved in yoga and meditation is a lifelong win for them. Both yoga and meditation teach kids the benefits of fitness, but they are also valuable coping skills that kids can key into during life’s challenges,” says yoga teacher Kerin Monaco.

Monaco started practicing yoga herself in high school to combat crippling anxiety that cropped up around SATs and college applications. She went on to teach yoga and recently began to share yoga with her young family. When her daughter was 9 months old, Monaco started to practice with her on the mat, where they both loved the peaceful energy that yoga brings. That peaceful energy is one of the key reasons adults practice yoga, and that calm is great for kids too. That’s not the only benefit though. Yoga teacher Katy Dagle says that for younger kids, yoga builds coordination, balance and self-regulation. For older kids, yoga continues to help with coordination and balance and also helps build flexibility, strength and self-confidence. The emotional benefits can be especially helpful in the challenging tween and teen years. In addition to these physical and emotional benefits, yoga can help develop values such as honesty and nonviolence. These values are an integral part of yoga that is often overlooked, but they can be an added benefit to families practicing together.

34 PLAYGROUND Jan / Feb 2018

Get Kids Started with Classes Both Monaco and Dagle recommend classes for kids. An experienced teacher helps children learn poses correctly and can offer modifications or adjustments to things the don’t feel right. Kids (and grown-ups) should be reminded to do what feels right for their body. Not every child can do every pose, and a familiar pose can be harder on some days than it is on others. Yoga is noncompetitive, so teachers should help kids focus on their own practice every day and create a supportive environment. As Dagle reminds her students, “Yoga is a practice, not a perfect.” Once familiar with yoga, kids can use videos and yoga cards to practice at home.

Practice Anywhere Classes provide a safe introduction to yoga and ongoing support, but the beauty of yoga is that you can practice any place and any time. Here are two practices you can do anywhere: Breathe: Breathing can be centering, energizing or calming. For parents, try breathing deeply while holding an upset child. Monaco says, “When my daughter is fussy, deep breathing with her in my arms works every time.” Dagle uses “flower breathing” with her toddler: sniff a flower and exhale with a sigh to help diffuse big emotions. Dagle teaches older kids to use breathing exercises to calm themselves before a test. She encourages them to put their feet firmly on the ground at their desk, inhale for a count of four, exhale for a count of six, and continue for one minute to to help them feel both calm and grounded. Be present: Practice mindfulness and being present. That means noticing your environment. There are lots of ways to practice this with kids—you don’t even have to call it mindfulness. •

Sit quietly together or go for a walk, and see what you notice. Try closing your eyes. What sounds and smells do you sense?

Turn off your phone and spend some time doing an activity with your kids, whether it’s reading, coloring, dancing, snuggling, building. Just focus on what you’re doing with no distractions.

Describe something familiar as if it were new. In an exercise from Planting Seeds: Practicing Mindfulness with Children by Thich Nhat Hanh, kids pretend they are Martians seeing something from Earth for the first time. Hand your kids a familiar object (the book uses raisins, but you can use any simple object or food kids “see” every day). Remind them that they have never seen it before. Ask them to look, touch, smell, listen and taste and then to describe their experience.

Yoga builds strength, flexibility, self-confidence and focus. Kids get comfortable in and connected to their own bodies and minds and learn practices that they use for the rest of their lives.

Yoga Tips and Tools for the Whole Family Yoga benefits everyone. If you’ve practiced yoga before, it’s time to restart your practice. If you haven’t, why not try it yourself or as a family? Tips for Parents • Get back on the mat after having a baby. Monaco encourages new moms to get back on the mat as soon as your doctor gives the OK. The longer you wait, the less likely you are to get back. Just remember to meet your practice where it is. Your body has been through a lot. • Practice with your kids around. Monaco put her daughter on the mat with her as a baby. Dagle spreads out her mat in the playroom and practices while her kids play around (and under and over) her. If you’re used to a peaceful yoga studio, practicing with your kids around will be different, but you still benefit from your practice. • Remember that your yoga is good for your kids. Dagle says, “When I make the time to practice, I’m a better parent when I’m with my kids.” It may feel selfish to take that time for a class or home practice, but it’s worth it.

Tips for Families • Keep it fun. Use yoga songs and games. Let kids pick or even lead poses. Go with the flow. If energy levels are high, try some poses or actions to use some of that energy before shifting to something calmer. • Remember you can practice anywhere. Remind kids to use their breathing when they are getting frustrated. If you can’t get kids to take a deep breath, try taking calming breaths yourself. It helps keep you from getting worked up and helps change the dynamic in the room. Try mindfulness on long car trips or while waiting in line. Sara Barry is a writer who has practiced yoga for 15 years. Both her daughters have taken yoga classes and love to lead her in poses.

Spa-Tea-Da! Fatemah wanted to be pampered to pieces for her 7th birthday, so local party planners Lou & Pepper put together a fun Spa Tea Party for her and 10 of her friends.

Using white and pastel colored drapes, the neighborhood clubhouse was transformed into a tranquil retreat. Young guests were pampered upon arrival by slipping into monogrammed robes and slippers. Then they sipped on sparkling cider as they enjoyed spa services that included manicures, pedicures, make-up and hairstyling by Sparkled Pink. Once their beautification was complete, Fatemah and her friends enjoyed an afternoon tea with light snacks and sweets.

SPA TEA PARTY TIPS: 1. Keep color scheme muted and soothing. Use pastels or spa-like blues and greens to match theme. 2. Hire professionals to execute services. Companies like Sparkled Pink come equipped with everything needed to do hair, nails and make-up, including chairs and foot spas.

3. Pamper party goers. Make even the youngest party goer feel all grown up with special touches like sparkling cider in champagne glasses, warm towels and cucumber slices for their eyes. 4. Dual function favors. Providing party goers with a robe allows them to dress the part but 38 PLAYGROUND Jan / Feb 2018

also keeps the guests from getting their party clothes messy while having services done. 5. Schedule the party during mid-morning or early afternoon. This particular theme lends itself to light bites, so no need for a heavy meal. Instead, provide healthy snacks like mini sandwiches and fruit to complement the cake or other sweets.

See/Saw Mary Pope Osborne at Orlando Shakes Photos by Jessica Friend Photo Design Mary Pope Osborne, author of the award-winning Magic Tree House book series, and her husband, Will, an author and playwright, visited the Orlando Shakespeare Theater for a live performance of Showtime with Shakespeare: A Magic Tree House Adventure. Orlando was home to the world premiere of this play, which Will Osborne adapted from the beloved children’s book, Stage Fright on a Summer Night, written by Mary Pope Osborne. This very special weekday performance was attended by select local schoolchildren, and live video was streamed to classrooms throughout the country and around the world. After the play, the actors, the author and the playwright took questions from both the live and virtual audiences. Orlando Shakes invited PLAYGROUND and 12 guests (winners of our Facebook contest!) to experience a VIP book signing and photo opp with Mary and Will before the show. It was a fantastic experience, and we’re grateful to Orlando Shakes for the unique opportunities they work so hard to provide for Central Florida families. PLAY // BLOGGER SPOTLIGHT Dana Nichols catalogs her mommy life in the City Beautiful on her Momlando blog. Here is one of our favorite posts and Instagram photos. Photo by Dadlando at Lamp & Shade Fair on Mills Avenue

The Four Step Journey to Being #OrlandoAF STEP 1: Newbie Whatever brought you to Orlando, you’re 100% questioning the decision. It’s hot as hell, the traffic is insane and there are chain restaurants everywhere. The people are kind of cool though. STEP 2: It’s alright, for now. You can get where you need to go without getting lost on the toll roads. You know what time you really need to leave to get somewhere on time. You found a favorite pizza place. You love the food trucks, the nightlife and the pub crawls. You still think you’ll need to move in a few years to advance in your career, go to grad school or find your soulmate, but you’re pretty sure that #orlandodoesntsuck. STEP 3: This place is my jam! I’m here to stay. You know the difference between Thornton Park, Audubon Park and College Park. You know the Milk District from Mills50. You know which farmers market you like best and when to go. You know it’s worth it to make the drive to Winter Garden every once in a while and check things out. You’ve been to a UCF Football tailgate and have even gone inside the stadium to watch a game once or twice. You can’t be friends with people who aren’t sure they want to stay here for the long haul because you’re tired of making friends who move away. STEP 4: OrlandoAF You love Orlando and find pride in everything we do. You have an Orlando City Soccer magnet on your car even though you don’t even like sports. You tell people how many years you’ve been here (especially if it has been more than 10). You cheer on every new trend that comes to town ... Poke bowls? You love it. Cookie dough café? You’re there. You share it on Facebook. You let your big city friends know Orlando is right there with them (albeit six months to two years behind). You share every "Best of" list you see that highlights Orlando. When you meet someone who just moved to Orlando, you start rattling off everywhere they should eat, shop and visit. You get annoyed when you hear someone say there’s nothing in Orlando but theme parks and chain restaurants. You start a blog just so you can talk about everything you love in the City Beautiful. You’re #OrlandoAF Read more of Dana's blog posts on momlando.com or follow her on Instagram @momlando. 54 PLAYGROUND Jan / Feb 2018
