BECKY JOYE ARTIST STATEMENT I find inspiration in observing the human-made amidst the natural landscape: communication towers rising in the sky, construction cranes holding materials in balance, and industrial creatures hiding on rooftops. Ordinary structures become vehicles of my imagination for images that tell stories of the places I have visited and imbue emotions of the human experience. In my practice I am processing personal emotions such as joy, grief, and anxiety that are universal to all human beings, from birth to death. Through mixed-media paintings, collages, and sculptures, I use the interaction of color and pattern to make our invisible emotions tangible to the viewer. My background in architecture led to my proclivity for structures and the feel of a hand-drafted drawing on paper. In my work I utilize tools from my training: tapes and rulers and templates to create clean edges and meticulous details. My minimal compositions are inspired by flattened elevations in architectural or engineering construction drawings, where extraneous information is removed akin to the Japanese aesthetic principle of Kanso, the elimination of the non-essential. 4
