Coping When the Family Pet Dies

NIMALS BRING US JOY, love and attachment.

But when a pet dies, the grief we experience can be like losing a loved one; it can be heartbreaking to everyone in the family.

For children, that loss can be devastating because kids form a bond with the pet almost like a sibling attachment. As difficult as it can be, patience and understanding will help them through the grieving process and help them cope with other losses throughout their lives.

WHAT TO SAY AND WHEN

If the pet’s death is sudden or unexpected, use age-appropriate language to calmly explain to your child what happened. Be brief and let your child’s questions guide how much information you provide.

If you must euthanize your pet, it’s best not to use language that makes children think that the pet has gone to sleep. It’s a very scary idea for a child that someone could just go to sleep and never wake up again. Use language with your kids that’s real, not scary, and honestly tells them what is going to happen.

If you need help on how best to talk with your child about loss, ask your pediatrician, or find an age-appropriate children’s book to help you explain it.

ALLOW TIME TO PROCESS

Let your child know it’s OK and natural to feel sad, lonely or even angry over the loss of a pet. Acknowledge and validate their feelings. Be sure to give your child time to process their emotions.

Don’t rush and say, “Well, let’s get another dog,” as soon as your dog has passed. Children need a chance to grieve. They need to feel the love that they had for their pet ease in a natural way and be able to process that before you move on as a family.

To help your child remember their pet, share comforting memories of fun times you had together, or help them make a scrapbook or photo collage. Sometimes it’s helpful to have a little monument in your yard, such as a rock with the pet’s name on it.

Parents should also be open with their children about their own sadness over losing a family pet, because it’s comforting for kids to know that they’re not alone in how they feel. In months to come, continue to talk often about your pet and share in happy memories that will remain long after the pain of loss has passed. ✦

Pinocchio is carved out of grief to replace Geppetto’s lost son, Carlo. After receiving life from a blue Wood Sprite, Pinocchio hurls headlong into exploring the world, but his temper and stubbornness often get him

into trouble. His conscience, Sebastian, the accident-prone cricket, tries to keep him out of mischief and guide him toward good choices. But after an unfortunate accident with a truck, Pinocchio discovers that he’s immortal. While in the underworld, he receives advice from the Chimera, aka Death, who cautions him not to squander his time in the mortal world. Sadly, Pinocchio’s headstrong determination to be famous in Count Volpe’s puppet show separates him from Geppetto and sets into motion the events that cause Geppetto

AS COMIC-MOVIE ORIGIN stories go, Black Adam holds its own compared to the Superman and Batman franchises, but it doesn’t quite establish its characters as long-term contenders in the DC universe. That said, it’s an action-packed, visually impressive film with tons of digital effects and destructive mayhem set in a Middle Eastern country. The “Shazam” connection is a bit confusing, but it’s downplayed and replaced by a newly risen character with God-like powers who awakens after a 5,000-year imprisonment. The Justice Society heroes called in to tame this threat include Doctor Fate, Hawkman, Cyclone, and the bumbling Atom Smasher, Jr. Eventually, the Justice Society learns that although Teth-Adam seems to destroy everything he touches, his intentions to free the people who venerate him are honorable. He’s an unintentional hero who helps them locate an ancient crown that

bestows evil power to the descendants of a tyrant king. When they finally see eye to eye and join forces, Teth-Adam transforms into Black Adam, the only power strong enough to destroy the evil crown of Sabbac. Adam ends the tyranny, but not before also leveling most of the city. In the credits, there’s a hint of a sequel, but even Superman might not be able to resurrect Black Adam a second time.

and Calm

From extremely busy schedules to pressures at work, and the stress that comes with raising a family, life can throw all manner of things at you from different directions. It’s not unusual to at times feel mentally fogged up, anxious, stressed, or even depressed if you don’t take good care of yourself...

IfSCIENCE IS ANYTHING TO go by, engaging in a hobby can be an amazing way to re-energize and refresh from the inside out. And of course, a hobby can be an exciting activity, something you’re passionate about, or something you just do to pass time when you don’t have a lot going on.

However, a hobby that calms your mind and brings you to a state of mindfulness can have multiple benefits to your health and well-being. Most of which may pretty much be new to you, here are five hobbies you might want to try out to promote calm and mindfulness.

MINDFUL DRIVING

Driving a car can be an incredibly stressful activity. You need to keep track of your speed, stay in your lane, and manage traffic at the same time. Add in the possibility of road rage, erratic drivers, and aggressive pedestrians, and it’s a recipe for disaster. Fortunately, mindful driving or motorcycling does not have to be this way.

A full-body meditative practice during your daily drive will ease your tension, calming your mind down and making you more aware of your surroundings. Many meditation experts and doctors believe that the act of taking in your surroundings helps you maintain awareness of your thoughts and actions. You can even meditate on the road if not before you press the ignition button!

From learning a new language to walking, scrapbooking, and even cooking, there are so many other mindfulness activities you can take up as a hobby. The above are just a few ideas you can consider for inspiration.

FLOWER ARRANGING

As the name suggests, flower arranging is the art of creating beautiful displays of blooms for purposes of decoration or adornment. It’s an ancient art, which dates back centuries, but it’s only now being explored by experts in the UK and US as a way of bringing meditation to the workplace.

The best thing about arranging flowers is that it engages your creative mind. As you commit much of your concentration to turning the

blooms into a beautiful work of art, it keeps your mind focused on the present moment. Also, the colorful blooms, the activity itself, and your resulting bouquet will all have a calming effect on your mind.

Simply collect some flowers from your garden or surroundings and start arranging them. Wondering how to get started? You can start by checking out your favorite tulips, roses, or peonies online from a florist or flower delivery service for inspiration.

There are also lots of video tutorials on YouTube and other platforms that you can check out for a step-by-step demonstration.

YOGA, MEDITATION, AND TAI-CHI

Taking time out to practice yoga, meditation, or Tai Chi can be a great way to enhance your mental health and well-being. Not only are these soothing to the mind and body, but they can also enhance your mental clarity, your focus, and creativity. They can even help you relax and get to sleep. A session of yoga or meditation can do wonders for your emotional and psychological well-being.

YOGA: Yoga is simply an ancient mind and body practice with Hindu origins that combines breathing techniques, yoga poses, breathing techniques, and meditation to promote overall wellness. Besides helping improve flexibility and muscle tone, practicing yoga can help bring your body and mind into balance.

The ancient Indian practice is known to be effective in reducing stress and warding off anxiety. During the practice, you become more aware of your breath, body, and mind as you stay in the present moment.

MEDITATION: Meditation is another calmpromoting activity that you can engage in as a mindfulness hobby. It has been used for millennia as a relaxation technique around the world.

The practice simply involves clearing the mind or focusing on your inner self from a quiet and relaxed environment, perhaps surrounded by nature.

While there are many different types of meditation, one of the best forms in our case is mindfulness meditation.

It entails preventing your mind from wandering about and instead concentrating on your surroundings and happenings at the moment. By focusing on your breath and body, you can become more aware of your thoughts and feelings and gain insight into yourself.

TAI CHI: Sometimes meditation is used together with slow, controlled moments in the practice of Tai Chi, a form of martial art

MINDFUL GARDENING

Gardening can be very calming and therapeutic. Working with plants can help you connect with nature, and the repetitive motions of gardening can be very soothing to the mind, body, and spirit. While at it, get lost in the moment, immersing yourself wholly into the activity. Shut your mind for a while and feel the soil’s texture. Marvel at the colorful foliage or flowers, or close your eyes and perceive the smell of nature. Listen to the birds or crickets chirping. Think of yourself as a child enjoying some sort of play!

DRAWING OR PAINTING

The act of putting pen to paper or brush to canvas takes concentration and awareness to work effectively. The same is true with painting, as it requires controlling one’s hands to produce effective and even strokes.

It turns out that these activities can also be extra calming too. An artistic hobby such as drawing or painting can be a great way to express yourself and get lost in the moment. They can help you relax, boost mental clarity, and sharpen your focus too. ✦

The Underwear War

WHEN I WAS IN fifth-grade, there was a chubby, quiet boy in my class named Barry Wilson. He was a so-so student and we really didn’t hear much from him until about midyear when Mr. Jorgensen asked the class, “What would you need to take with you to Mars in order to stay alive?”

“Food?” asked a child. “Right,” said the teacher.

“Water?” “Right.”

“Air?” “Right... Barry, what would you say? What else would an Earthling have to bring to Mars?”

We learned no more about outer space that day, unless you count our recognition of the new star who had just appeared in our firmament. Our laughter had produced a chemical change in Barry. For the rest of the year the least little thing would cause him to give his signature yell of DYYYEEEAAAA! and we’d all go nuts. Those must’ve been long months for Mr. Jorgensen, but they flew by on wings for the rest of us, especially for Barry. In the time it took to utter one magic word, he’d gone from wallflower to top entertainer.

fifth-grade daughter Marie tried to embarrass her second-grade sister Sally by secretly stuffing Sally’s backpack full of Sally’s underpants. Marie was hoping her sister would unwittingly pull out the underpants in the classroom and incur the derisive howls and jeers of her peers.

But the underwear bomb was discovered and de-fused by Sally while she was in my wife’s car getting a ride to school. Sally gnashed her teeth and left the underwear in the car. Later that day, my wife took Marie and 4-year-old Wendy to the doctor’s office for Marie’s allergy shot.

I don’t know what’s coming next, and neither do they. Both girls are keeping a close eye on their luggage, wary of more pranks. At this point, I doubt either of them would trust her sister to pack her parachute. Their game seems to be good clean fun, so I haven’t intervened. The only thing that disturbs me about their underwear obsession is the epilogue to the Barry Wilson story.

Barry disappeared from our school after fifth-grade and reappeared years later in high school. I spotted him in the corridor on the first day of my junior year. He had lost a lot of weight, but he didn’t look slim; he looked diminished. “Hey, Barry!” I yelled, glad to see him. “UNDERWEAR!”

But Barry just looked at me with blank anxiety. I asked, “Don’t you remember Mr. Jorgensen’s fifth-grade class?”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” he said, edging past, and he never spoke to me again. I soon found out that Barry was a sophomore, not a junior like me. He’d lost a year. Was it the one we’d spent with Mr. Jorgensen?

There’s a lesson here somewhere, but I’m doggoned if I know what it is. I don’t claim to have an answer, only a question: What is it about fifth-graders and underwear? ✦

Is Google doing anything to prevent the propagation of climate disinformation on the Internet?

THE ADVENT OF THE internet and smartphone innovations have brought information to our fingertips. As the number of users skyrockets, advertisers have identified lucrative opportunities to meet people where they are. Google is a household name, holding 87 percent of the market share and hosting billions of users. Polls of Google users show that they trust that it produces credible search results. Seventy-three percent of users believe that most or all of the information they find in a search is accurate and trustworthy; however, 68 percent of users were unable to identify the difference between an ad and an organic search result. This gives a leg up to potentially nefarious advertisers spreading climate disinformation.

Google addressed the problem of pervasive climate disinformation prior to the United Nations (UN) Conference of the Parties (COP) 26th annual meeting in 2021; the internet giant pledged to halt the display of ads that promoted climate disinformation. This commitment came in tandem with other advertisers pressuring Google not to display their products alongside climate disinformation.

These ads were targeted to key-word searches including: greenhouse gases, renewable energy and

CCDH has outlined steps that Google needs to take to actualize the claims they’ve made on their stance on climate disinformation. Step one would be to halt climate denial ads and ads promoting greenwashing. Additionally, CCDH suggests that Google introduce a transparent library of their advertisements so that the public can examine how ads are being placed and how they may distort search results. Lastly,

These recommendations are a good starting point, but there is no guarantee that Google will follow them. That being said, users should be armed with skills to identify climate disinformation. Common tactics that proponents of climate disinformation utilize are: false expertise, logical fallacies, impossible expectations, conspiracy theories and cherry-picked data. The best way to combat these tactics is to be a cautious consumer of online information. Be prepared to vet the source of the information that you find, and get in the habit of developing a mixednews diet. ✦

Electronics Recycling Competition STARTS

IN JANUARY!

LANE COUNTY RESIDENTS INTERESTED in reducing their e-waste footprint have many options for reusing, repairing, and recycling their unwanted electronic goods. The Electronics Recycling Competition—sponsored by NextStep Recycling, Partners for Sustainable Schools, Oregon Green Schools, and Lane County—is a case in point.

The competition runs from January to Earth Day in April and invites all county elementary, middle, K8, and high schools—staff, students, and parents—to divert toxic electronics from the waste stream. Schools will compete to see which can donate the most electronic recycling materials to NextStep Recycling. Donations can include non-plastic materials, such as microwaves, dead Christmas lights, TVs, printers, old cords and cables, cell phones, computers, and audio/visual equipment. Schools are entered into the competition based on student enrollment numbers, and winners are eligible for prizes and grant monies.

The event has proven popular, with schools collecting 14,105 pounds of electronic waste in the 2021-22 school year. The winning school, Meadow View School in the Bethel district, collected more than a third of that total at 5,145 pounds.

Jessica Ahrenholtz, assistant executive director with NextStep Recycling, said educational outreach is crucial to the nonprofit’s work and its electronic waste reduction goals.

“Unwanted computers, monitors, and TVs—ewaste–is the fastest growing waste stream in the U.S.,” Ahrenholtz said. “We hope to encourage individuals to change their behavior and way of thinking, and NextStep puts their time and effort into this program to work towards this goal.”

Joshua Frankel, Partners for Sustainable Schools program coordinator, said the competition provides a

great example of collaboration at many levels.

“This competition is a great model of a multigenerational effort between students, families, and school staff,” Frankel said. “The competition also showcases partnerships between local nonprofits, governmental agencies, schools, and dedicated parent volunteers.”

Tackling e-waste is not limited to the competition, however. Community members can drop off many unwanted electronics to NextStep Recycling (245 Jackson Street, Eugene) throughout the year, where items will either be fixed and resold at the NextStep Reuse Store or responsibly recycled. The nonprofit also coordinates free pickups for businesses and schools.

“A good portion of donations are put back into the community to those in need and with barriers to education and employment,” Ahrenholtz said. Frankel added that the competition is a helpful way to protect the environment, keeping toxic chemicals— such as lead and mercury—out of our landfills and providing recycled materials for use in new devices.

“NextStep receives the materials and provides important job skills and volunteer opportunities,” he said. “It also inspires comradery and community when schools see how successful they can be working together.” ✦

Meet handsome pup, BUDDY ! This 8-year-old shepherd mix has beautiful brown eyes and always a wagging tail. He is an active older gentleman who would make the perfect addition to a calmer household. He will love daily walks around the neighborhood and a warm couch to relax on. He has a great spirit with funny spunk. We know he will make the best, loyal companion to his new pal.

Buddy has done well with other calm dogs and should meet any dog friends at the shelter prior to adoption.

He needs a kitty free home and has done well with kids.

He has black and tan fur, weighs between 54-55 lbs., is neutered, microchipped and up to date on vaccines. Buddy is an all-around great dog that will be a wonderful snuggle bug to his new family!
