es, we cover music in some way in every issue; it would be odd if we didn’t, as a magazine for mobile DJs. But way back when, we established a yearly tradition of putting the spotlight on what people are requesting DJs to play, by way of the Mobile Beat Top 200. In days of yore, our readers would dutifully pencil in their top requests based on their own gig logs. Then, we provided handy emailed and online forms to fill out. Ultimately, Mobile Beat partnered with DJ Intelligence, the provider of leading management tools for entertainers’ websites, to present what is likely the most accurate view of what’s really being played out there. So enjoy the lists, as well as the other music-related info inside! ~ Dan Walsh, Editor-in-Chief

YOU, DISRUPTED

Breaking DJ Complacency START BY CHALLENGING EVERYTHING By Todd Mitchem

W

hen I entered the Mobile DJ world, I had one thing on my mind: to make a mark. It was not within me to simply settle for being average or basic in my approach to the craft of DJing. I remember the most creative time in my young life back in the early nineties. DJs of the nineties had to be agile, creative and entertaining. We could only rely on our skills in interaction, mixing, and properly designing music playlists that took the audience on a journey. A DJ, either in a club or at a private event, had to be smart and there were many ways to differentiate oneself from the others in our field. As time went on, I created the longest running DJ/MC comedy show in Chicago: Comedy You Can Dance To, and then went on to entertain at countless weddings, corporate events and concerts as the warm-up act. When I finally stopped DJing in early 2005, I had moved on to become a behavior and cultural change leader in the corporate world. However, the drive to disrupt everything around me remained intact. So, modern-era DJ, I have returned to challenge you with some transformative insights. I feel the need for this is dire because I've been watching an unprecedented level of complacency taking hold in the DJ world. I first saw this issue about two years ago, here in Denver, when I took my team to a local club. As I stood watching the DJ behind the booth, it was apparent after a few minutes that something was off. The music was playing and was mixed perfectly—but maybe a little TOO perfectly. Also, the DJ’s movements were not consistent with someone who was actually programming and mixing

For more than 17 years, Todd has coached executives on dynamic leadership, structural excellence, and strategic business applications at some of the top brands in the world, including Microsoft, Apple, Starbucks, Anheuser-Busch, H&R Block and more. His skill in helping corporate leaders and many others reach breakthroughs to greater success led to the creation of his new book, You, Disrupted: Seizing the Life You Want by Shaking, Breaking, and Challenging Everything.

music. I went up to him, introduced myself and hung out in the booth for a short period of time. It was then that I saw... that he was playing a prerecorded set! The entire night was a sham. I then saw this same behavior at a wedding a year later and, again, the DJ was playing premixed tracks. These DJs have effectively become pieces of technology rather than artists.

WHO—OR WHAT—IS REALLY IN CHARGE? To kick off this series of articles I am writing for Mobile Beat, I want you to consider one important thing: Are you truly working to take your skills, abilities and shows to a level of disruption that inspires the audience? Or are you simply going through the motions and letting technology do the work? Don’t get me wrong about technology. A laptop, with all your music stored on it, is far more convenient than all the CDs and gear we had to carry around in the nineties—but mixing and programming are being lost. Performance skill is being killed off and the only person who can save it is you. So here is your lesson for this month—your assignment, if you want to truly stand out from the thousands of lazy DJs around the world. Your disruptive assignment in three steps: • Write (or type) the top ways you can engage the audience differently. For example, “I will work the room to take more requests and then integrate these into a playlist.” Or “I will stop the music at least twice a night to walk in front of the audience and get their focus.” • Next, destroy any pre-made playlists, sets or groups of tracks that you have so very carefully placed on a pre-mix. Get rid of them. The action of deleting the set will force your mind to program music in the moment, rather than simply lazily hitting “play” and faking it. • Lastly, and this one is the most important, look for opportunities to program actual playlists in a way that takes the audience on a journey. If someone requests a slow song, then after you play it, begin to take the crowd on a journey into music they will love—all building to a climax. Take your time, rather than attempting to slam the dance floor with a packed group. In the next article, I will explore more ways for you to stand out from the pack and truly disrupt your thinking. Let’s take this disruptive journey together!

How to Fill Your Calendar with Cash

Power Up Your Trivia Up-Sell By Rob Johnson

A

s we prepare for the summer months and likely lots of weddings and other music-based events, midweek trivia nights should also be busy, providing you with some gravy to go on your meat and potatoes. To be busy, marketing and selling yourself are important. So, in this article we are going to look at some key elements for successfully up-selling your trivia services to enhance your DJ business. These ideas will help build your confidence by showing you when and how to approach the subject with your clients.

TIMING IS KEY The first thing you really need to consider is WHEN to do the up-selling. There are two ways to look at it. If the gig is going to be a one-off, say, a wedding or graduation party or something along those lines, then the upselling could need to happen at the initial stage. Don’t overdo it; below we will look at some examples of how you can really up-sell discretely. If the gig is the start of a long-term project, then maybe delay it until you have been in the gig for a few weeks first. Once you have built a rapport with your booking client then really go for the big up-sell! It comes down to your credibility and your reputation. (For more info, check out “Build a Rapport with Your Booking Client” on the DigiGames blog.) If you are credible and respected, you will be listened to more. If you are listened to more, then it is an easier job. If your trivia shows are boring, mundane, and appear to be thrown together at the last second, then you may have a problem with up-selling.

clever, you can engineer this in a way where even when getting the reduction, you achieve the rough sales target you are hoping for.

ADDITIONAL SERVICES / TAG-TEAMING Up-selling can also involve boosting your business by bringing in more revenue streams. You probably do this anyway, but make sure you offer any appropriate additional services to current customers. For example, if you are doing trivia in a bar that you know features a DJ on the weekends, try and combine it. Again, wait until your trivia has been a success first; then try to increase your services.

UP-SELLING WITH TECHNOLOGY One element that can really help you upsell is cutting-edge technology. If you have been reading this column for a while, then you will know the benefits of using technology. You need to be selling this aspect to your venue owners as well. If they have only booked a standard pen and paper night you should show them your technology. Show it off. Have videos of you using it. Have facts and figures about how the technology has helped your other customers. Sell the benefits of an authentic TV-style game show and make sure they understand how the technology can help them to make money. My company, DigiGames ( www.digigames.com ), can help you make sure you have a wide range of options to wow them with, like the Trivia Cubes wireless buzzer systems, Trivia Pads or Extreme Bingo.

GETTING A SECOND NIGHT

If all you do in your business is host trivia nights (and there’s nothing wrong with that), then that is what you should be up-selling. If 10 weeks has gone well, then try to get them to book you for another night during the week that you aren’t already working DISCOUNT FOR LONGER BOOKINGS on. Suggest themed trivia nights that you can try on these other For longer engagements, offering a discount is a powerful way to nights. If they can see that you are bringing in money and making up-sell. For example, if I usually charge $400 a night, I may offer profit on one night, then you can use it to bolster your sales pitch. the client a package for 10 weeks for $3,600; yes I am now only As you can see, the sales aspect of your trivia hosting charging $360 a night—but I have secured the work. If you are business—especially the ability to up-sell—is as important as all the other elements. If you have great trivia and a great system with superb Rob Johnson has hosted trivia parties and game shows for over 17 years. What Do I Do with These Screens? DJS AND MUSIC VIDEOS, PART 1: BACKGROUND By Steve Sharp

A

s if DJs didn’t have enough to keep them busy, there’s always more: music videos! Music video can be: the “edge” that puts you above and beyond your competition; or some other dumb thing everyone does that no one pays much attention to; or...BOTH. Based on my experiences, I have ideas to share about how to make it more of the former and less of the latter. But first let’s look at how we got to today, in terms of music video’s development The age of music video EXPLODED in the early 1980s, parallel to the explosion of cable television. Did you know: that people used to have antennas on the roofs of their homes in order to get a maximum of 12 channels (often grainy, depending on your location) out of thin air for free? These channels did NOT include most of today’s favorites such as: Fox, ESPN, A&E, Comedy Central, HBO, MTV, or Youtube, as NONE of these existed yet. Enter, cable TV, which could pipe into you home HUNDREDS of channels in clear, near digital-quality (originally), with rich stereo sound! Content providers scrambled to feed this sudden explosion in demand for new content and niche channels. For the first time, you could hook up your television to your stereo system, and it wouldn’t sound like a tinny AM radio. Televisions of the time were VERY SMALL by today’s standards, with the primary part being a large, fat and round picture tube. It’s pretty hard to describe the impact these multiple improvements would have and how exciting it was at the time. One of the most exciting new cable content providers was MTV, originally an acronym for Music Television. At first, almost no American bands were making music videos, so MTV played lots of British bands. This was the major force behind what’s now referred to as the Second British Invasion. The subscriber base grew, as

their promos told everyone who didn’t have it already to call up their cable company and tell them “I Want My MTV.” This slogan would eventually also be used as a song hook for a music video, made popular on the ever-expanding channel, called “Money For Nothing,” by Dire Straits. Nevermind that the song and video was mostly a slam of the channel itself; it was also a hit ON said channel. And where MTV went, radio followed. Because of the channel, tons of new bands from the UK, America, and the rest of the world connected with fans in an unprecedented way. It didn’t take long before almost EVERY song had a music video to accompany it. It also didn’t take long to figure out which bands embraced music video and which bands made videos because they HAD to. Image had always been important, but never so much as now. And for the bands that didn’t enjoy it, the evidence is still around to prove it. Compared to today, where downloads and streaming have DRASTICALLY reduced the income potential for even really big hit songs and artists, there was big money in the music business, and record labels spent HUGE amounts of money making music videos. Sometimes they actually spent more for a four-minute music video than some movie studios were spending on full-length motion pictures -- and then bragged about doing so. Even stranger is how MOST of this material wasn’t (at least initially) a PRODUCT in and of itself, but merely a means to promote selling a record, cassette or CD. Selling the music videos themselves was an afterthought. Soon MTV would realize its own power in the music business, and despite threats of antitrust actions and complaints from competitors (both other video channels and even radio stations) about unfair practices, MTV regularly had exclusive content, and would often heavily promote exclusive new video premieres that would usually debut right after kids would be getting home from school. It was an exciting time to grow up in, and music video played a huge part in your very IDENTITY as a young person in that era. Sadly, as so often happens, mobile and club DJs were an afterthought at best, when it comes to technology. The video technology available to most was VHS or Beta (aka Betamax). Neither could be manipulated very easily overall, and certainly not for DJ use. With no practical way to put your hands INSIDE the cartridges to cue, alter the pitch, or perform an instant start, video “mixing” essentially meant playing two music videos, back to back. The ability to manipulate and mix images in the same way as we would music was a long way away. And by the time it became easy and convenient to do, the public was no longer so (relatively) easily entertained. The future always brings challenges you never anticipated.

Good Times Never Seemed So Good “SWEET CAROLINE”—PARTY ANTHEM FOR ALL GENERATIONS By Mike Ficher

Y

ou are playing at a wedding reception. The moment is right. You hit play. Neil Diamond blasts from the powered speakers. The crowd quivers in anticipation and many start singing along. All voices join in, shout-singing the first line of the chorus. The moment arrives. You kill the volume, then—“Bah! Bah! Bah!” Good times certainly never seemed as good as this moment, for this joyous crowd. The next Saturday: The moment is right. You hit play... “Sweet Caroline” is one of the most enduring and popular songs of all time. A #4 pop and #3 adult contemporary hit in June 1969—then Diamond’s first top ten hit since 1966—the track has appeared on the Mobile Beat Top 200 since its inception, and shows up at #6 this year. Based on the millions of client requests on the DJ Intelligence system, “Sweet Caroline” is the only pre-1970s song to consistently reside in the Top 10 of the the Top 200…

“WHERE IT BEGAN, I CAN’T BEGIN TO KNOWIN’...” Now, the $64,000 question: Who inspired the song? Well, it depends on which Neil Diamond you listen to—the 2007 or 2014 version. “I’ve never discussed it with anybody before—intentionally,” Diamond told the Associated Press in 2007. When he finally met the now Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg, and Josh Kantor, Boston Red Sox organist: “It’s a silly, cheesy song, but I think it’s a fun song when everyone sings along with it.”

performed the song for her 50th birthday in 2007, Diamond indicated that the only surviving child of John and Jacqueline Kennedy was song’s inspiration. A few quotes from the songwriter: “I thought maybe I would tell it to Caroline when I met her someday.” “It was a number one record and probably is the biggest, most important song of my career, and I have to thank her for the inspiration.” “I’m happy to have gotten it off my chest and to have expressed it to Caroline. I thought she might be embarrassed, but she seemed to be struck by it and really, really happy.” According to 2007 Neil, it wasn’t an 12

in-person encounter but a photograph of the then nine-year-old Caroline in a magazine caught the singer’s eye. “It was a picture of a little girl dressed to the nines in her riding gear, next to her pony,” the Brooklynborn singer said. “It was such an innocent, wonderful picture, I immediately felt there was a song in there.” However, in an interview on NBC’s Today show, prior to the release of his first new album in six years in October 2014, Melody Road, Diamond said that he was aware of Caroline Kennedy, but, well, another woman inspired the title character. “The song was about my wife at the time,” he explained. “Her name was Marsha—and I couldn’t get a ‘Marsha’ rhyme.” Also according to the artist: “I was writing a song in Memphis, Tennessee, for a session. I needed a three-syllable name. ‘Sweet Caroline’—yes! That was it. And that’s what it’s been.” After 26 years of marriage, Diamond and former television production assistant and song muse, Marsha Murphey, divorced in 1995. Although the full amount of the divorce settlement was never publicly disclosed, Diamond was quoted at the time: “She deserves half my fortune. I wish her all the happiness $150 million can bring.”

“WHO’D HAVE BELIEVED YOU’D COME ALONG?” The song’s methodical build, underlying urgency, simple lyrics, audience participation opportunities, and catchy hook have made “Sweet Caroline” not only a DJ staple but a fixture at Fenway Park. Mobile jocks actually have the Sox to thank for pumping up the crowd singalong potential already built into the song. In 1997, facility music director Amy Tobey started playing “Sweet Caroline” at select Red Sox games—simply because she liked the song. It turned out that so did the Beantown baseball fans. A lot. So strong was their love for the anthem, that when new ownership took over in 2002, the incoming management ordered Tobey to play the song at every game. Like “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” in the middle of the seventh, “Sweet Caroline” fills the air in the middle of the eighth inning at the home of the Green Monster. David Wells, former pitcher and briefly Boston Red Sox: “I don’t know. It’s catchy.”

Ironically, a song by a singer from New York with no discernible connection to Boston—lyrically, musically, and apparently, in origin. When Megan Kaiser became the game day music programmer in 2004, she upped the ante, cutting the volume on the song to allow the fans to sing the brief but blaring horn section riff (“Bah! Bah! Bah!”), as well as the vocal echo “so good, so good, so good” without accompaniment. Never a bunch to look a gift horse in the mouth, mobile entertainers borrowed the trick for live events. Love it or loathe it, “Sweet Caroline” continues to stand the test of time as a guaranteed crowd-pleaser in the mobile DJ’s musical arsenal.

The Magical, Musical Unicorn List CREATING & PROMOTING PLAYLISTS TO GENERATE LEADS By Staci Nichols

“C

’mon Staci...isn’t everyone else already doing this?” Ehhh...if they are doing it, they likely are not doing it well. Let’s not allow PopSugar and BuzzFeed to beat us at our own game (they make tons of popular wedding playlists on Pinterest). DJs make better playlists than bloggers, right? Well, we will now! CREATE A UNICORN PLAYLIST The internet has started burping up generic Garter Toss and Cake Cutting song playlists because it is too full of them. You are going to have to dig deeper. The single most popular playlist I ever created was “34 Gringo-Friendly Spanish Dance Songs for an Intercultural Mexican Wedding.” Is that specific enough for you? This playlist has generated 4,753 hits to my website in the last 30 days (800 of those on Cinco de Mayo). My other superstars are: 2) “Spanish MotherSon Dance Songs,” 3) “The Ultimate Eclectic, Rustic, Indie, Feel-Good Wedding Playlist,” 4) “Boudoir Playlist: The Perfect Music for Your Sexy Photo Shoot,” and 5) “The Ultimate 90s R&B Wedding Playlist.” Ask yourself, “What is the playlist that /i/ only I /i/ could create?” This is your “unicorn” playlist. Maybe it’s “7 Overlooked Death Metal Jams for Your Wedding.” Maybe it’s “The Geek’s Movie Score Playlist for Your Wedding Cocktail Hour.” I’ll tell you what it isn’t: “10 Country Father-Daughter Dance Songs.” Nope. Someone get the internet some Pepto!

TYPE UP YOUR PLAYLIST IN CANVA Canva is a free program with a gazillion Pinterest pin templates. Find one that vibes with your brand, colors, etc. Type up the first half of your playlist on the pin, then write at the bottom: “Click here to see the rest of the playlist.” The pin is just clickbait to get the brides to your website.

CREATE A PLAYLIST OF YOUR SONGS ON YOUTUBE The next step is to create a playlist of the songs you’ve selected on YouTube. To do this, go to YouTube (make sure you are logged in). Go to a video of the first song on your list. Below the video, click on “Add to.” In the box, type the name of your playlist. It’s difficult to rearrange the order of the songs in a YouTube playlist, so try to add the songs in the order you want them to appear. When you are finished loading all the songs to the playlist, click on the three lines next to the YouTube logo (top left). Under “Library,” click on the name of the playlist you just created. In the top center, click the gray “Share” button. Then click “Embed” and copy that code to your blog post (next to or below the Canva playlist pin). Most DJs who incorporate a way for visitors to preview a playlist do it with Spotify. I recommend YouTube instead because Spotify doesn’t give you any SEO juice, not everyone is familiar with or uses Spotify (whereas YouTube is the 2nd most popular website in the world), and because people can watch AND listen on YouTube (plus like, share, comment, etc).

PROMOTION AFTER PUBLICATION So you’ve published your unicorn playlist with the Canva pin and embedded the YouTube version -- now what? Share your pin to Pinterest linking back to your site (as well as sharing it on Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, etc.) If you don’t have a “Playlists” category on your blog, be sure to add one and start posting them. Keep your ears to the street for great playlist opportunities; I use my brides’ Cocktail Hour playlists all the time as pins/posts (my playlists #3 and #5 above were literally copied and pasted straight from my brides). Now I know you are wondering, “Staci, do you actually get bookings from your playlists?” Yes, I do! Not only do they book, but we tend to “get” each other right off the bat. They are instantly “sold” because they already trust my musical judgment, AND I know they are the kind of couples I want to work with because they like my taste in music. Win-win!

Staci will be speaking about Pinterest Marketing at the Wedding MBA Conference in Las Vegas, October 2-4, 2017 (www.weddingmba.com).

More Fun with Lists

Want to take it up even one more notch? While you should obviously include the full playlist in your blogpost, you can also type it up on a branded PDF and require visitors to opt-in if they’d like a free printable of the list. Have an Amazon or iTunes affiliates account? Link each song title in the written playlist to the Amazon/iTunes page for that song. How do you like them apples?

PLAY SOMETHING WE CAN DANCE TO!

Stepping Out of the Box By Jay Maxwell

P

eople ask me what I find most rewarding about the mobile DJ business. My answer is knowing that the client was completely satisfied. How does one accomplish this? In one way it seems obvious: Simply meet their expectations that you’ll be playing music to keep people on the dance floor. However, the DJ, who often serves simultaneously as the master of ceremonies, may also be viewed by the client as the coordinator of the entire event. Thus, a client’s expectations of what the DJ will be doing often extend beyond his or her role as the entertainer, including situations that have nothing to do with music or entertainment. This is why the DJ must be willing and able to “step out of the box.” Stepping out of the box means understanding that the main purpose people hire a DJ is to /i/ enhance the experience /i/ at their event. If they only wanted music played, they could have achieved that goal by attaching an iPad to a speaker. For many years, the availability of technology to easily provide music without a DJ has existed, and many have sounded alarms about Mobile Beat’s resident musicologist since 1992 (issue #11), Jay Maxwell runs the multi-talent entertainment company, Jay Maxwell’s Music by Request, LLC, in Charleston, South Carolina. He is also a professor of Business at Charleston Southern University. His passion for detail and continuous research of clients’ requests can be found not only in this column, but also in his annually updated music guide, Play Something We Can Dance To.

the demise of the mobile DJ business as a result. Nonetheless, mobile DJs continue to thrive because their primary purpose is to provide an experience. Although music is an essential tool, a DJ’s other primary tools are intelligence, leadership ability and people skills. Stepping out of the box is a holistic viewpoint. There are times when the entertainer is expected to go beyond “typical” DJ duties. This requires him or her to walk a fine line, keeping all the pieces together while avoiding interfering with another vendor’s purview. For example, at one of our recent wedding receptions, the bride expected the wait staff to go to each table individually to release guests to go through the buffet line. Immediately after the blessing, I made an announcement that after the bride and groom are served to please wait patiently until someone comes to your table directing you to proceed to the buffet. When the bride and groom returned from getting their food, it soon became apparent that the staff was not involved in releasing the guests. When I gently asked the head staff member to assist with this activity, she stated that this was not part of their job. However, since it was an expectation of the bride’s to have the tables called, I immediately stepped out of the box and met that expectation of the bride. Although it would have been easy to make an announcement to release the tables from left to right in an orderly fashion, letting the guests decide for themselves when the best time to proceed, it was not part of the experience the bride had anticipated. Remembering the “big picture” that a DJ’s job is not limited simply to entertainment, but is about serving the client and creating an overall experience, makes stepping out of the box an essential philosophy. It is comfortable for anyone to stay inside their box. It’s safe—a sure bet.

DJs often approach music the same way, always playing what is safe and a sure bet. However, stepping out of the box means playing songs that still get people on the dancefloor, but perhaps have not been played for a while. This issue’s list features a handful of songs like this to try out the next time you need to get audience members out of their respective “boxes” and onto the dancefloor. Keep them handy the next time someone shouts, “Play Something We Can Dance To!”

THE SPIN DOCTOR

Keep On Trucking? IN THE SPIRIT OF MB’S OLD “NIGHTMARE” STORIES, THE DOCTOR SHARES HIS TRAVEL TRIALS By Mike “Dr. Frankenstand” Ryan

I

n the movie Forrest Gump the title character says (shortening the common phrase), “It happens!” Well, “it” happened to me back in March, while traveling to and from Las Vegas to exhibit at the Mobile Beat show with my company, Frankenstand. I rented a 24-foot Penske cargo truck, this being the “smallest” truck with a lift gate for moving pallets. After loading my show product, I headed to Los Angeles to pick up three pallets of Wade Novin’s speakers for his Novin Audio booth and continued my trip to Sin City and the Tropicana hotel-casino. Halfway through the Mojave Desert I stopped to fill up the truck’s fuel tank with diesel. As I started up the glow plugs (diesel spark plugs) I kept my eyes glued to the left side mirror to avoid hitting the pumps but misjudged the building to my right. Then I heard the gut-wrenching sound of metal scraping; flashing a look to the right side mirror I saw parts of the building’s roof flying like confetti in the air and noticed the loooong scratch on the truck’s container from front to back. Wanting to survey the damage I stopped at Peggy Sue’s 50s Diner, an

32

original roadside malt shop featuring a huge gift shop full of 1950s memorabilia and rock & roll music, along with an odd dinosaur park facing the freeway. Upon inspection of the truck’s side I mumbled out loud, “That’s gonna cost me.” (And it would.) Thankfully, the rest of my trip was uneventful and I made it to the Tropicana’s back lot to unload. The show was well attended but I was disappointed not to see the usual San Diego contingent, other than the always-smiling Eric Sands of Sundance Productions. I was thrilled to meet Andrew Cho of the Bosch Corporation, the Senior Product manager for EV portable speakers, who voiced a strong interest in my Frankenstands (shameless plug). John Hsiao of Odyssey cases and bags also stopped by. It’s always great to chat with business associates in the Pro Audio industry and fellow

MO B I LE B EAT • MAY 20 17

DJs from around the country. But when the show is over I’m like a horse chomping at the bit to race back to the barn. It was time to head back to “Cali.” Wade Novin and I were furiously shrink-wrapping our show products on pallets on the show’s floor, when seemingly out of nowhere a fork lift driver passed by and ran over the side of one of my favorite Cole Haan Men’s Montgomery Plain Oxford Lace Up Black Suede Dress Shoes. My left foot—it hurt like heck! No serious damage was done but I still have a bruise. The forklift operator nearly had a cardiac arrest. Me too! Truckin’, I’m a goin’ home, whoa whoa baby, back where I belong / Back home, sit down and patch my bones, and get back truckin’ on.” —“Truckin’,” The Greatful Dead

Mike Ryan started out writing for news radio, and has been a DJ in the SoCal radio market on KGB and KSDS. He mobiles as Mike on the Mike. He is also the inventor/ owner of Frankenstand Powered Speaker Stands.

It was almost 7:00 PM and I was facing a long drive home. After saying goodbye to friends I started the truck and backed it up, aiming for the convention freight door. This time, I misjudged it and backed right into a parked car! No heavy damage but enough to warrant a long labored investigation by the hotel’s security team and a call to my insurance broker. I was starting to seriously wondered if a black cat had recently crossed my path. After crossing the border back into the Golden State, I stopped again to top off the fuel tank. Unbeknownst to me there are two kinds of diesel fuel – one for vehicles and the other of lesser quality for non-vehicle engines. While filling up I noticed a warning sign on the tank that explained the difference and that using the wrong kind diesel could cause severe engine damage. Hmmm. I climbed back into the cab to continue my trip and after a few miles noticed the check engine light on. What now? Second guessing myself, I feared that I might have put the wrong diesel fuel in and started having visions of being stuck, late at night, in the Death Valley, in a truck filled with valuable speakers and stands. I really wanted to be back home. Fortunately Penske has a helpline phone number with a live person who was very reassuring in his assessment that because I just filled up I probably didn’t tighten the gas cap all the way. I arrived home a little after 1:00 AM, got some sleep, and in the morning returned to the rental location to hear the bad news. And it was BAD. The rental clerk explained that I was covered by their insurance...but with a $5,000 deductible. The damage was assessed at $1,500 and that didn’t include the rental that was just shy of five hundred dollars. Like I said !@$% happens. Next time I’m flying to Vegas and shipping my product to the show.

A POSITIVE PART TWO I have a personal mantra about life, kind of reverse psychology: For every negative experience, an equally positive one happens. Thankfully, it did happen this time around. The week after the Mobile Beat show I got a call from a DJ friend who asked if I could fill in for him at the Hotel Del Coronado, the classic wooden structure featured in the movie Some Like It Hot, starring Marilyn Monroe. I jumped at the offer. The wedding reception was held in the stunning Crown Room, which features a towering 30-foot Oregon Sugar Pine domed ceiling that makes the place look like an old train station. The room’s namesake crown chandeliers were designed by Wizard of Oz author L. Frank Baum. I swear if this wedding didn’t cost a hundred thousand dollars then it sure was close. I shared the stage next to David Patrone and his Jazz Quartet, a group of pro musicians with Wrecking Crew-level talent. Patrone’s singing blew me away and his use of a coffee cup making it sound like a trumpet was amazing. He does a great Satchmo too. It was an awesome gig! Next, I got a call from a local school to do their Halloween carnival. This year’s event was scheduled on a Saturday but the school decided to change the date to the Friday before—a Friday the 13th, thus the perfect date for a Halloween party, plus it freed up my Saturday. To top it off, the same day I heard from a realtor friend who wanted me to DJ her upcoming office party. What a turnaround from an ill-fated convention trip! What was it that Forrest Gump said about life and a box of chocolates?

Is It Sound or Is It Noise? KNOW THE DIFFERENCE, WHEN IT COMES TO THE VENUE AND THE LAW (PART 2 OF 2) By Matt Martindale

C

ontinuing our look at how to deal with the sound versus noise issue, it’s important to understand the factors that go into common venue sound compliance agreements. Remember, the word “noise” is really subjective, with the three ingredients that distinguish between sound and noise (the listener’s perception, their interpretation, and the circumstances in which the sound is heard). A competent wedding DJ will know the difference. He or she will repeatedly walk the room to monitor the sound. They’ll also know how to read the crowd and able to keep guests involved and engaged without the need to “crank up” the sound levels to get attention. They’ll know how to set a standard, and measure it, then work with the venue to maintain it.

and installer of venue sound systems, expressed the entertainer’s responsibility succinctly: “The performer, whether a band or DJ... has the obligation to know what responsible levels are; to understand how sound is propagated; and to measure their sound and play it at responsible levels so their business activities are within the law. That is just smart business for the venue, and for the performer.”

KEEPING IT LEGAL AND ASSURING SAFETY One reason behind the compliance agreement is the reality that neighbors of the venue have a right not to be disturbed. A noise ordinance protects their rights as citizens. Venues have a legal responsibility to comply with local noise ordinances, as well OSHA standards for sound exposure, for guests and staff alike.. Venues also have a responsibility to make sure that bands and DJs can also perform their duty at reasonable levels. They have to be within the law because, in the end, it’s the venue’s name on the line beyond just this single event. Ben Stowe, owner of NLFX Pro Audio, a leading supplier

Matt Martindale has been a professional DJ and MC since 1989, performing at more than 1,400 wedding receptions since then. Along with running his award-winning, multi-DJ company, Amoré DJ Entertainment (www.amoredjentertainment.com), he has accumulated extensive entertainment experience including training in audio production, sound engineering, lighting and design, improv comedy, voice over artistry, magic, and much more.

34

MO B I LE B EAT • MAY 20 17

A noise ordinance is nothing more than a law which limits the allowable noise in different zones of a municipality at various times during a day with a measurable standard. One doesn’t need to know the math and physics behind the sound level measurement, the decibel (dB), since it provides a simple number as a reference. (A little math is helpful though. The decibel scale is not linear but logarithmic, meaning that each number indicates a larger and larger jump in magnitude. For more info go here [ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Decibel#Acoustics ].) Now, assuming the performer is responsible in managing volume to a “reasonable” level as defined by the law outside, this can also be easily done by managing their volume inside. What is considered “safe?” According to OSHA, the limit for four hours of continuous exposure is 88 dB; it is 85 dB for up to 8 hours. The louder the noise, the faster hearing damage occurs over time. To put this in perspective: • •

A normal conversation at three feet is 55 dB A barking dog, TV or alarm clock is around 75 dB

Staying On the Level Mobile entertainers have to do four things to maintain proper sound levels: 1) Know what responsible levels are 2) Understand how sound is propagated 3) Own and know how to use a decibel meter to measure sound. 4) Play a t responsible levels (OSHA says 88 dB for up to 4 hours, 85dB forup to 8 hours)

• • •

A lawn mower is 85 dB Riding a motorcycle is 100 dB A normal rock concert is 110 dB

“A trend beginning to sweep the country is concerning. Many noise ordinances are shifting AWAY from a decibel standard -that easy-to-read number that can be measured -- to a “plainly audible” standard, because municipalities are tired of being in the middle of disagreements. What is music to one person, is noise to another and neighbors have a right not to hear it too. This means if any sound is heard outside the property line, it’s against the law. That also means ‘guilty until proven innocent,’ with zero tolerance, and zero grace.” He also mentioned a buffet table’s worth of court cases based on this trend. Clearly something DJs should get ahead of. You now also have groups like Noise Free America. It’s a nonprofit organization with chapters in 27 states, whose members proactively work to reduce “noise pollution” in local communities, and push legislation at the local, State and Federal level. The reality is, as a professional DJ or band, we have an obligation to ensure that our business activities are within the law and do not infringe on the rights of others. Neighbors also have a right not to be disturbed. We have a right play it, but they ALSO have a right not to hear it.

So, how do know your number? You’ll need to obtain a dedicated device (not a smartphone app) called a decibel meter. Most venues are now getting them to help ward off noise complaints from neighbors by managing a performer’s sound level inside. It measures sound instantly and assigns a number as a quick, measurable standard. While most venues have their own dB meters and many take their own measurements throughout an event, a professional DJ should also have their own meter and should take regular measurements every 20 to 30 minutes as well. “Noise ordinances aren’t just about you, the venue or the party,” says Ben Stowe. “It’s about everything that makes noise: a loud Harley Davidson motorcycle, a band practicing at home, etc. It’s about everything! It’s really a law about responsibility -- responsibility on both the part of the venue to adequately insulate their venue, and to look for noise abatement or acoustic treatment options, as well as the performer’s responsibility to educate themselves on the law in the areas they play; to train their ears and monitor their own sound and remain willing to comply with the law and adhere to OSHA indoor standards too.” Here’s the reality: many venues around the country require the bride, and band or DJ to sign a sound compliance agreement at least 30 days in advance of the event. It outlines their standards, and requires signatures confirming that all parties will adhere to OSHA guidelines, as well as agree to know and comply with the local law. For example should the DJ be told to turn it down, and refuses to comply or intentionally delays in doing so, then chances are, the agreement states that the music will end and the performer will forfeit the opportunity for retention of future events. It also outlines who is responsible for fines. We’ve heard about as much as a $1,000 fine for the first warning by law enforcement in some municipalities. Lastly, it helps to protect the venue’s legal rights to remain in business long term, by setting an acknowledged and agreed upon standard.

BEYOND ORDINANCES Being responsible and proactive in sound measurement and control is important for another reason. According to Ben Stowe, WWW.MOBILEBEAT.COM • MAY 2 0 1 7

Ready to Play, Come Rain or Come Shine By Stu Chisholm

S

o, this happened: A banquet facility here in Michigan built a gorgeous, landscaped outdoor pavilion specifically for wedding ceremonies. When my helper and I arrived to provide PA, I was impressed by the thought that went into it. There was a bar-like area that served as a DJ booth for weddings, or an actual bar for, say, an evening outdoor patio party for the golfers at the club. With a pergola overhead and a twocircuit outdoor electrical box close by, it seemed like an ideal situation. But then the dark clouds rolled in. HERE COMES THE RAIN AGAIN...AND AGAIN Setting up my outdoor ceremony rig for the wedding scheduled in a half an hour, I didn’t really notice that the sun had been obscured by a bank of grey, threatening clouds. After a quick sound check, I hastily covered my gear and went into the hall to see if the staff had a contingency plan for bad weather. They had begun setting up chairs and an arch in another room, but the manager said that it was for “backup” and that they hadn’t decided, at that point, whether to move the wedding indoors or not. Meanwhile, it had begun sprinkling outside. Needless to say, I rushed to strike the rig and load it up on my cart to move it indoors. No sooner had we once again sound checked and the florist finished decorating the indoor arch, that the manager came in and announced that the outdoor wedding was on! Emerging from the building with ceremony rig in tow, the grey clouds and rain had all but disappeared, and sun drenched the now soggy chairs. Workers were frantically trying to dry them with bar towels. Again, we set up as

the first family members arrived. If you’re like me, you probably have a “rain clause” in your contract. Mine gives me the authority to call an event in the case of bad weather without refunds or recourse. While I could have justified such a call, this day turned out to be amazing after that brief sprinkle. All that would’ve happened is disappointment, with all fingers pointing at me. This whole “adventure” made me wonder: Just how weather-proof is my system? If only it was a bit more robust, it would’ve saved a whole lot of wasted effort, panic and stress. What might be some ways to make it even better? One item I already have in place is a Gator case [ http:// gatorcases.com/pro-audio-solutions/ ] made of rugged polymer, covered with a fairly water-repellent nylon cover. While I can’t operate my system with the cover in place, I can quickly snap it on and worry about everything else while the console can fend for itself. This can be a lifesaver, and in my case, it saved the day! Last summer I had to replace speaker cones after my rig was caught in a huge thunderstorm. While my system was well protected by a tent, my speakers were not. Even with the polymer cabinets, the drivers got soaked, and predictably were ruined. This experience reminded me of a trip to Cedar Point, the amusement complex in Ohio. Throughout the park, they have a lot of speakers, permanently mounted outdoors. Most had some sort of bag over them, so I did a bit of research; what is needed is a bag designed to keep speakers dry while being sonically transparent. This is exactly what Under Cover [ http://www.undercovernyc. com/custom_covers_and_bags/audio/pro_audio/ ] in New York City does. (By the way, the same client has booked me again for this summer. You can bet that, this time around, I’ll have my own set of Under Cover bags handy!)

This whole “adventure” made me wonder: Just how weatherproof is my system?

ONE MORE THING If you have your own tent for outdoor events or one is provided for you, it is important to run all electrical cords high, off the ground. It only takes a small crack or cut in an electrical cord’s insulation to put dangerous live current into ground water or even moist grass! This insulation isn’t very thick even with good, high quality cords. I use plastic ties to mount electric cords up over entryways and along the bottom of the tent’s “roof.” Not only is this safer, but makes for a much more professional look as well. Now if only I can talk last weekend’s facility into putting a tarp up on top of their pergola… Until next time, safe (and dry) spinnin’!

Coming Transactions: A Cashless World By Mark E. Battersby

T

here’s no denying it: Love it or hate it, cash is playing far less of a role in society. Physical money is rapidly becoming obsolete, due to constant improvements and innovations in the realm of virtual, electronic financial transactions. So, if you haven’t already arrived at the realization of this reality...welcome to the new cashless world. Make no mistake. Many DJs who remain dependent on cash sales are finding income and profits declining. That’s right: Mobile

entertainment business owners who are ignoring developments such as the recently introduced EMV Smart Card technology, Apple’s mobile Wallet and other mobile payment vehicles, cyber currencies and the like, may find profits affected. One alternative to government-issued cash, Bitcoin [ https:// www.cryptocoinsnews.com/bitcoin/ ] made its first appearance back in 2009. Today there are hundreds of other cryptocurrencies, often referred to as Altcoins. [ https://www.cryptocoinsnews.com/ altcoin/ ] Mainly used for large transactions, in the U.S., the IRS has ruled Bitcoin and several of its counterparts are not currencies but, rather an “investment” vehicle that fluctuates in price. Illustrating the trend towards a “cashless” world, ATMs may be on borrowed time with data showing consumers increasingly embracing technology for transactions. According to the Federal Reserve, U.S. banks have been progressively scaling back the number of ATM machines. In 2015, ATM withdrawals dropped by a record 7.2 per cent. Innovations in technology have drastically reduced the need for people to carry cash. People can use their smartphone to pay for goods much like swiping a debit card. Mobile commerce or M-commerce, is the buying and selling of goods and services through wireless, handheld devices. M-commerce and other electronic payment methods are gaining acceptance by consumers, a move away from cash welcomed by many businesses. PayPal, the online payment system, continues to add more

merchants and now counts 14 million merchants to complement the platform’s 170 million users. Users are now able to use PayPal on their mobile phones in stores, as well as on their computers for online purchases. Electronic money, or e-money, is the money balance recorded electronically on a stored-value card. Electronic money is a floating claim on a bank or other financial institution that is not linked to any particular account. Examples of electronic money are bank deposits, electronic funds transfer, direct deposit, payment processors and, of course, digital currencies. [ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_currencies ] Many mobile payment systems have been introduced in the past few years including Google Wallet and Apple Pay. However, along with the convenience of cashless transactions, comes an increased awareness of security issues. A good example is provided by the new chip encoded “Smart” cards, which an estimated 90 percent of consumers will soon have. By now, every mobile entertainment business owner should be aware of the so-called “liability shift” that occurred when the new EMV (Europay, Mastercard & Visa) technology was introduced. No longer will the credit card companies be liable for fraudulent use of the old credit card technology. In essence, businesses such as mobile entertainers and card processors that continue to use the old technology will find themselves, not the credit card companies, liable for fraud. Adopting any of these new and emerging payment systems largely depends on what the customers of your DJ business prefer and are willing to deal with. In other words, will your customers embrace or reject these new payment options? According to a 2014 Gallup poll, 29 percent of Americans didn’t have a credit card, and that figure is rising, in part because millennials don’t like them. The consumer financial services company, Bankrate, published figures [ http://www.bankrate.com/finance/credit-cards/ more-millennials-say-no-to-credit-cards-1.aspx ] putting the number of millennials without a “major” credit card at 63 percent. The main alternative again are prepaid cards, but they are burdened by high fees. The new technologies being created and improved to facilitate cashless transactions and improve security are good news for every mobile entertainer and business. All of which raises the question: Do you offer alternatives to cash that appeal to YOUR customer demographics? In other words, is your mobile entertainment business really ready to profit from the coming cashless world?

THE LAST WORD

Examine Your Margins IT’S TIME TO REVIEW HOW MUCH YOU’RE REALLY MAKING FROM YOUR CLIENTS By Jason Weldon

I

was speaking with a wedding business owner the other day about the leads the company was getting. We were discussing the type of lead that was coming in and how this particular company was pretty much saying yes to every lead that was “reasonable” to their margins. This got me thinking, and I feel a need to address the idea that all business is good business, and that anyone that has a realistic budget that calls you should be your customer. We all know the basics of this. Laugh off the prospects with the totally low budgets and wish for the ones that have the high budgets. However, I am more worried about the “average” to “just below average” prospects that you might be thinking are actually good work. But are they, really? The following exercise should be interesting: Take all of your jobs and looked at them from the perspective of price point. Throw away the top 5% and the bottom 5%. Take a look at the remaining 90%. What numbers do you see the most? Next, what is the average price? Those two numbers are probably pretty close to being the same. You probably knew that before you even did the math.

If you were to take 5%-30% of the bottom part of that number, what kind of customer does that look like to you? If you were to take 70%-95% of the top number, what kind of customer does that look like to you, as well? Both of them should be slightly different customers. And hopefully, you would want more of the latter. So why not make the decision to want to work with more of them? Many companies get tied up with the customers in the middle. They don’t know how to properly say no to a customer that, for the most part, looks to be a good customer. At a quick glance, they don’t seem like clients you wouldn’t want to work with. But when faced with another option, a large- margin client (margins are key on this!), you might wish you had more time to invest in the larger-margin or high-paying client. Yes, let’s just assume that all the margins are the typical on these clients. A $1,000 job with a 90% margin is always better than a $5,000 with a 10% margin. But for this scenario, let’s just assume you are working with 60% margin clients. I would challenge you to do a deep dive on your clients and truly find out if the ones under the 50% mark are really worth it. If you could shift your attention to the clients above the 50% mark, would you be able to offer them better service and a better value? Clients take up time. Spending more time on the ones that give you more revenue should be your focus. Just imagine if you shifted your focus to the over-50%. Then, in three to five years, that customer becomes the under-50% and you have a new customer base over the 50% that you can move to. This cycle can keep happening and generating more and more revenue. Look, if you do nothing but just take 10 minutes to look over your current client base, you will be miles ahead of other businesses. You can gain some great perspective by just looking at some numbers and trying something new.
