Work of national significance Mawson Lakes might seem like a sleepy suburb, but behind the lovely lakes and green avenues is a powerhouse of intellect and innovation setting the pace in the modern world. In this issue we look at two areas of developing national significance in ML - sustainability and defence. Our cover shows the bank of solar panels that greet you as you turn off Elder Smith Road into Mawson Lakes. This is part of UniSA's sustainability project to provide enough electricity to power the University. Read the story on page 9. More than 100 companies are now based in Technology Park which is a vital defence industry precinct for developing the next generation of electronic warfare solutions for the Mawson Lakes Living is an independently owned community magazine for people who live, work, study and play in Mawson Lakes. The new Adelaide office for SRC (solving crucial electronic warfare challenges) was opened in Technology Park in March, and last month the soil was turned for the $50million Raytheon Centre for Joint Integration. MLL was at the official opening and brings you the story on page 7. Mother's Day is coming up, celebrated annually on the second Sunday in May, so we feature a colourful feature on ways to make mothers and grandmothers feel special.

MLMYC - the best The Mawson Lakes Model Yacht Club has been recognised by the Australian Radio Yachting Association as the largest model yacht club in Australia. The club was started in 2002 and now has 98 members and is growing. Thanks to community support and our new enlarged pontoon on the beautiful Sir Douglas Mawson Lake we are the envy of other clubs. - President Dean Bonnett Industry 4.0 in schools A links exists between your Education Guide in MLL/March and the article on the 4th Industrial revolution in MLL/April. Government schools are responding to the latter. In the coming years students across all SACE subjects will study industry framework subjects determined by emerging technology (Industry 4.0). Subjects will include artificial intelligence, advanced manufacturing, the internet of things and healthy ageing technology. You're right to say that the 4th Industrial Revolution will change the world! - Ian Perske Pepper Loved your story on Pepper, the humanoid robot. Where can we get one for our retirement village? - Peter Coster Violent movies I agree with Kerryn's comment (MLL/March) about violent movies breeding aggression. For disturbed minds it's not a big leap from a movie where violent manoeuvres are spelled out to a real-life attack. I heard an Indian cricket team visiting NZ who witnessed the mosque shooting and saw blood-soaked victims staggering from the building say: "It looked like a video, what we usually see in a movie." - Allan Landen Lime helmets Hanging on the handle bars of Lime e-scooters are helmets, but who cleans them from one user to the next? - Todd Zachary Cascade ducks I live adjacent to Cascade Lake and enjoy the ducks and the ducklings in season. My concern is, apart from one rock in one corner of the Lake, there are no other means for ducks to fly out of the lake. I have rescued baby ducklings close to drowning as there was no other means for them to get out. 4

Mawson Lakes Living : Issue 143 May 2019

Every month I look out for my copy of MLL because we do not receive a local newspaper. I appreciate the magazine for local information and opinion. I like to read the issues raised in Community Conversations and having a list of clubs in the back is very useful. I joined the Over 50’s Club because I saw it in the magazine. - Dr Yasmeen Faruqi Unfortunately a number have drowned because of this problem, Cascade Lake is unlike the main lake on the Boulevard that at least has the red spiral that the ducks can perch on and be safe. There is also a turtle in Cascade Lake that obviously cannot get onto any dry ledge either? - Maree Hartley, Mowbray Street Bad people in car park My $2000 mountain bike was stolen from the bike rack at Woolworths at the main carpark entrance. It was chained up. Someone obviously had bolt cutters with them at 9.30am in the morning. Just wanting to make people aware there are no cameras facing the bike rack. There was nothing the centre management nor I could do. - Darryl Le Lau Good response to ad I put an ad in MLL last month for a casual truck driver and within one week had 8 responses. I found what I was looking for but the enquiries are still coming in. Great little magazine. - Gordon Reynolds Open Day at AAL Many kids from Mawson Lakes have developed valuable skills in the Australian Air League over the years and the article in MLL/March painted a great personal profile for the Parafield Squadron. Our Open Day is on Friday 3 May from 6.30pm till 9pm at Parafield Airport. All welcome. - Parafield Squadron Lieutenant Marc Lelliott,OC

Expanding defence precinct in Mawson Lakes Australia’s mission to protect Australian ground troops on overseas duties will be transformed in a Raytheon Defence Centre being built in Mawson Lakes. Work will start this month on a $50 million Raytheon production facility for assembling and maintaining new short range defence capability. Building is expected to take 18 months and be completed next year. Speaking at the official launch in Technology Park, Premier Steven Marshall said the significant facility strengthens SA’s position as a key strategic hub for defence.

"This facility will provide worldleading capacity in defence products for our own army and for chain and export opportunities, for now and decades to come." Head of Raytheon, Gerry Weller, said Mawson Lakes was selected as the site for the new Australian centre because of its central location, it is on a main transport artery, is close to Edinburgh's defence hub, and is in a

defence precinct in Technology Park close to related defence industries such as Saab, Daramont, BAE, CEA and Lockheed Martin. Raytheon is one of Australia’s largest defence companies and building the high-tech facility in Mawson Lakes will require 200 contractors, and when completed, the industry will employ 300 staff in Mawson Lakes for at least a decade, assembling and maintaining the national advanced surface to air missile system (NASAMS) that will enable the army to counter complex airborne threats such as enemy aircraft, drones and missiles beyond the visual range. Our teeth are as unique as we are with highly variable anatomy. Grooves and pits are normal in teeth, however for some of us they are Dr Peter BertossatoBDS unusually deep making them impossible clean. Bacteria can therefore sit in these pits indefinitely until they finally cause tooth decay. So why have we been made with deep pits and grooves? Well throughout evolution these were never a problem for two reasons. Firstly because as cavemen we had particularly coarse diets and would wear our teeth so much that grooves and pits would disappear completely. The other reason is because as cavemen we did not have cariogenic (decay causing) diets – cavemen did not have access to refined sugar in any form. Dental decay is only a modern disease caused by modern soft diets including processed foods and refined sugars. With modern diets, very w deep pits grooves ww .dand entalo often develop decay. nm

Movie for Mum Want to take mum/nana to a bright and breezy romantic comedy that will delight the whole family? 'Top End Wedding' is a funny, feel-good ride through the stunning scenery of the Northern Territory and seldom seen Tiwi Islands. Lauren, a successful lawyer from Darwin who lives in Sydney says yes when her partner Ned proposes, but she wants to get married in her hometown with her white father and aboriginal mother Daphne at the ceremony. Just one problem, Daphne has recently separated from her father and gone to the Tiwi Islands to cope with the pain of separation. So begins a road trip for Lauren, Ned and their cute dog Chloe across the remote Far North to find Daphne. In a fabulous journey that takes them from Adelaide to Darwin to Kakadu then Katherine, and eventually all the way to the Tiwi Islands, Lauren and Ned fight off crocodiles, dodgy helicopter pilots and a motorboat chase by narky relatives. The Tiwi Islands and its indigenous community are rare sights in any film so this movie that

is shot amongst its colourfully costumed inhabitants and is scored by traditional Tiwi songs provides a cultural richness and authenticity. It portrays the sound of the indigenous languages, the traditions of indigenous culture and the beauty of place. Adding gently nuanced social satire are Ned’s parents, sheltered white boomers, who immerse themselves stiffly at first, then whole-heartedly in indigenous culture, as both families unite to pull off a dream wedding in Darwin. This charming and funny cross-cultural romantic comedy that deals with love, family and second chances is showing close to Mawson Lakes at the Walllis Cinema in North Adelaide. - Ed

Homestay Mum Francesca Richichi has a big house on Mawson Lakes Boulevard, a big family and a big heart. Her heart reaches out to international students who need a host family while they study in Adelaide. She has hosted students from Vietnam and Korea. Presently her family is hosting 2 girls who are studying Year 11 at the new international high school in Mawson Lakes - Maple Leaf School-UniSA "When overseas students arrive in Adelaide they don’t know anybody, how things work and where to go, so we start by introducing them to everyday routines. We make them part of our family with daily chores to do, visits to the shops and they are involved in adventures with my three children. There’s never a dull moment and my kids learn so much from our international guests and we build enduring global relationships."

Francesca with Year 11 students from Maple Leaf High School, Betty and Semilia, who say that being with an Australian family and living like a local makes it easier to be away from their families in China.

Teaching Mum: Helping children succeed at maths When Chau arrived in Adelaide as a 4-yearold refugee from Vietnam she couldn’t speak English, so when she went to school she struggled to keep up with the other children. Her parents put great emphasis on education so she studied hard and today she has a degree in commerce and accounting and is a Fellow of Certified Practicing Accountants (CPA). "I know how hard it can be at school, especially if you fall behind, so I want to help primary-aged children grasp mathematical concepts early. Maths is the building block to a successful career in STEM subjects, and a strong mathematical foundation offers many opportunities and a broad career path," she said. To help children, Chau and her husband have established SAM (Seriously Addictive Maths) in Goodall Parade Mawson Lakes for children from 4 to 13. "Maths is all around us and children thrive with maths when it is fun and relevant to their world."

Maths is all around us but it's not just about numbers, it's about problem solving and this is in great demand in the modern workplace. "No matter what their age, don’t let your child underachieve in maths. For example, a 6-yearold child should be able to count to 100 and place double digit numbers along a line from 1 to 100. They should also recognise basic shapes and be able to name them," said Chau. If you would like a FREE assessment for your child call Chau on 0400 040 386 Ed

Chau is seriously addicted to mathematics and she has a passion for helping children succeed in this subject so she has introduced a maths learning program to Mawson Lakes tailored for children from 4 to 13.

Caring For Your Feet

Quick puzzle

with Mardi Edwards

Find the two identical umbrellas.

BLISTERS Whether you are an athlete, enjoy walking, or have just bought new shoes, we have all experienced blisters at some time. They can be very painful and limit our mobility. What are blisters? Typically blisters occur when friction causes the top layer of skin to be torn away from the layers beneath it. The space created then fills with liquid creating a blister. Blisters are painful as the outer skin layer, which protects the underlying sensitive skin, is damaged, and the added pressure of fluid also causes discomfort. Prevention Wear in shoes slowly. This will reduce local irritation and friction and allow the shoe to shape to the foot. Protect pressure areas with sports tape pulled tightly over the area to reduce friction and add an extra layer of protection. Bandaids or similar may move, thus continuing to rub and worsening the problem. Treatment Ideally it is preferable not to pop blisters as it exposes the sensitive skin underneath and can increase the risk of infection. It is better to apply padding to reduce local pressure and pain. If you do pop the blister be sure to use a sterilised needle to make a small hole to allow it to drain, and apply antiseptic afterwards.
