A Truly Texas Wine Experience

Spend springtime enjoying the tasting room and patio at Torr Na Lochs Vineyard & Winery

Karen and Blake DeBerry, the visionaries behind Torr Na Lochs Vineyard & Winery, grew up in San Antonio. They started dating in the eighth grade and the rest is history.

Come the ‘90s, the DeBerrys were planning to settle in the Texas Hill Country. As luck would have it, they were in Scotland when the perfect property overlooking the water landed on the market. While they jumped at the opportunity, it wasn’t until taking a Cape Grace Wines tour in Australia that it clicked what they ought to do with some of the land. In 2014, they planted three acres of vineyard, kicking off their boutique winery journey.

“It has been and continues to be an incredible experience talking to guests,” says Karen. “The longer we speak to someone we think is a total stranger, we find a connection. They know somebody we know, they’ve lived

somewhere we’ve lived, they’ve gone to the same school… It’s a lot of fun to make those connections.”

Last year marked tremendous growth in the vineyard, but for Karen, the ultimate joy comes from hearing how friendly their staff is. At Torr Na Lochs’ heart is hospitality. Whether attending a Wine Club pick-up party or visiting for special dinners, live music on Saturdays, or events like movie nights, you are provided a welcoming experience. With much of the team coming on board as Wine Club members themselves, the family atmosphere shines through.

“We’re always looking to grow interest in both our wines and Texas wines in general,” says Karen. “We obviously hope that guests enjoy our wine and food, but we opened this business with the intent of making people feel like they are visiting us in our home. Every time we can do that, we know we’re doing it right.”

MEET LAUREN MARTIN, OWNER OF FAMILYOWNED DUVALLS CHILDREN’S BOUTIQUE

The summer of Lauren Martin’s senior year at Ole Miss, she was honored to work for the White House. Although she intended to use her broadcast journalism degree for radio or TV, she set out to serve our country following 9/11. Martin returned to D.C. to intern with the Advance office, finishing at the Department of Commerce in International Trade.

Martin accomplished a lot by 28. Still, she envisioned curating pieces from around the world at a boutique that she could call her own.

“There was a beautiful women’s clothing store in Oxford called Duvall’s, which also happens to be my middle name. I had always dreamed of owning a store just like that,” says Martin. “In Washington, I sat down with an executive from Lilly Pulitzer who helped me really hone in on what I wanted to do and achieve. However, life happened and I moved to Texas.”

Martin took on the role of stay-at-home mom of five in the following years. Come 2022, she finally saw her dream through for DuValls Children’s Boutique, and her kids have been her biggest cheerleaders. She has felt blessed beyond measure by the families that walk through her door, having even cried in joy for a woman who spent months hopefully browsing before announcing her pregnancy.

“DuValls was only possible through unrelenting prayer for years,” says Martin. “God’s timing is always the best, even when waiting is hard.”

CELEBRATING THE CONTRIBUTIONS OF THREE WOMEN IN OUR COMMUNITY

In every corner of the world, we find women who are leaving an undeniable imprint of resilience, compassion, and innovation. Through their voices and gifts, they inspire change in limitless ways. Here, we’ll shine a spotlight on three women in Greater Austin who chased their dreams and never looked back.

When Nilam Patel started creating poetry, she wasn’t seeking to write a book, but instead to heal. That said, in a matter of months, following her writing becoming so well-received online, Finding Her Being Her: A Journey of Poems came to life. Through this collection of her experiences, she aims to empower anyone looking for solace and needing to feel seen.

“How I got to doing spoken word at weddings, poetry nights, and other events is a blur. I took each opportunity that meant something to me and ran with it until it became a reality,” says Patel. “I continue to share, motivate, and fill that void that many of my readers have.”

Patel believes in using our emotions to build something beautiful, rather than stowing them away. This is something she drives home through her role at Bloom Foundation, an organization centered around giving teen girls a supportive, safe space. As someone who wishes she had a community like Bloom as a student, seeing youth leaders put together their own journal clubs and launch new programs inspires Patel daily.

“Being a mentor or helping in any way you can is a priceless experience for you, but also everything to them,” says Patel. “Don’t underestimate how you can change a life by giving a little patience and time.”

“Writing has given me a space to be myself, to be authentic.”

A beauty industry professional for 15 years, Vanessa Barendt has served many women on their road to confidence. However, it was when she discovered paramedical tattooing that she realized what she was called to do. Following a close friend being diagnosed with breast cancer, that calling became all the more clear, resulting in Barendt training in 3D areola restoration.

“My most memorable time doing areola restoration was my first client. It was a completely unique experience to help somebody affected by breast cancer complete her reconstruction journey,” says Barendt. “After our session, she cried tears of joy, which made me cry.”

Because Camouflaged Skin and Scar is approached as a complete package from start to finish, Barendt maintains long-term friendships with her clients and their families. She dedicates where she is today to the doctor she worked alongside early in her dermatology career who gave her a foundation for skin and taught her how to run a successful business. She hopes to similarly give back through mentorship to a young lady with aligning passions, and currently offers training to aspiring lash stylists.

“I have always loved lifting up those around me,” says Barendt. “The most meaningful part of owning Camouflaged is undoubtedly the beautiful women I meet. It’s challenging work that has a tremendous impact on these women and their happiness.”

Lisa Keil began her career at an Austin radio station where, upon promotion to Marketing Director, she fell in love with the highly competitive, ever-changing field of marketing.

“ELEVATE512 started from just a simple conversation with a friend who encouraged me to take that step. I’m so glad I did,” says Keil. “When I look back at all we’ve been a part of over the past three years, I’m blown away.” Her business is behind Zilker Park’s Kite Fest promotions, for King + Country’s soldout H-E-B Center Christmas show, Lauren Daigle’s Kaleidoscope Tour stop at The Moody Center, and much more.

“Every time I get an email or call about coming on to help promote a show or an event, I’m just as excited as I was the first time,” says Keil. “We get to work with some extremely talented people and I’m so grateful that we get to walk alongside them to create a really amazing experience.”

“The unknown can be scary but God was so kind in surrounding me with people who were supporting me from the very beginning.”

While working toward a degree in architectural design, Melody Wang-Patterson found a fascination with the spa industry. That fascination was enough for her to take the leap and open her first spa, bringing in her knowledge of design. Having heard of Seattle’s potential for business growth, she

decided to set up shop in the Emerald City and established a space fit for 50 employees.

Fast forward and Wang-Patterson moved across the country to Texas. She took up a job as an IT consultant during the pandemic, but quickly realized where her heart lies—in the pursuit of wellness. From there evolved her vision for the luxurious, personalized services offered at Spa Vida.

“Cedar Park is a great city to develop a new spa. People here are so friendly and supportive, always welcoming you like family,” says Wang-Patterson. “One of the most memorable moments since we opened was when a husband brought his wife in to surprise her with a spa package. We pampered her with the best massage and facial experiences.”

Wang-Patterson aims for Spa Vida to be a partner in self-care and self-love, accomplishing this through Eastern wellness techniques, such as cupping, gua sha, and reflexology. With the addition of organic skincare products in the facial room, she also wishes for women to become more confident in their looks. Ultimately, Spa Vida’s treatments are designed with your mood in mind.

“I love what I do—helping women to be happy and healthy after coming to the spa regularly, and getting to see them in person and building long-term relationships,” says Wang-Patterson. “Being the owner of the business, I get to work with wonderful employees. Their hard work and dedication to our clients touches my heart.”

Get to know Dr. Rashmi Indrakanti, DMD of Cedar Park Comfort Dentistry

At home, Dr. Rashmi Indrakanti can be found doing magic in the kitchen, blending Western dishes with Eastern influence. She goes on walks with her family and furry friends, enjoys playing badminton, and participates in nationwide tournaments with the Women’s Throwball Association. Plus, on top of sponsoring local associations and worship places, she spends time providing dental services to those less fortunate.

Every day, Indrakanti is committed to finding and spreading happiness. This extends into Cedar Park Comfort Dentistry, the practice she took over after seven years of establishing her Round Rock office.

“Smile has no language barrier. I strive to create beautiful smiles for all ages,” says Indrakanti. “My goal is to see my clients leave with good feelings and confidence in their oral care.”

Dentistry was seeded in Indrakanti from her childhood orthodontics treatment. Getting there, though, was a herculean task. She competed with thousands of candidates to secure admission into India’s elite Coorg Institute of Dental Sciences before becoming an associate dentist.

When she later joined her husband in the United States, while pregnant with her first child, Indrakanti worked hard to clear the National Board of Dental Examiners requirement. She then pursued a rigorous DMD program at what is now Rutgers University. The extensive hours put in during her education have since earned her the Colgate-Palmolive Award for Excellence in Periodontics.

“Today, I practice in all aspects of general dentistry,” says Indrakanti. “I have achieved certification in implantology so I can replace a missing tooth and contribute to any smile’s makeover process.”

Through Cedar Park Comfort Dentistry, Indrakanti loves bringing her cosmetic touch to any personalized dental treatment. And with clients who go as far as helping to take care of the office plants, it’s clear that the relationships she fosters go far beyond regular cleanings.
