Honoring Mothers That Make A Difference WRITTEN BY: Camille Lucy

We spoke with Sheli Muñiz, New Mom and Emmy® award winning journalist on the NBC 6 News team, about balancing work and family, spring traditions and how she’s handling today’s current matters.

T

here is no greater love than the love of a mother: it is pure, unconditional and unwavering. Being a “Mother” goes way beyond the meaning of the word itself. In a Mother's eyes, you can find the purest love and care this world has to offer. It isn’t always an easy job, but the rewards are boundless. This Mother's Day, as we celebrate and honor all of the beautiful Mothers out there, we had the opportunity to speak with Super Mom, Sheli Muñiz. She shares with us all about family, spring

traditions, inspiration and adjusting to today’s changed world. As an extraordinary woman balancing career and family, what would you say is the “driving force” in your life? Balancing is more of a dance. Some days the balance is in tune, and other times, it’s out of sync. At the core, though, my ‘why’ is my family. Because my family is my North Star, it helps me to become a better journalist,

remembering the great responsibility that comes with informing other families about news that impacts them. Attaining a work-life balance is not an on/off button, but rather an intentional effort that comes with creating healthy boundaries. This is a work in progress, every-single-day. Do you have any Spring tradition(s) that your family participates in each year? Are there any you would like to start now?

journalist. I was able to return to work whole. Ready. Recharged. Committed. Work almost seems easier than being home! Shout-out to stayat-home Moms; you don’t get enough credit! To the women wondering how am I going to balance it all, do it all? We can try but we will run on empty. So, when you’re home—be present at home. When you’re at work—BE at work! What is your favorite quote and why?

This is something I am so excited about as a new mom! I have many beautiful memories growing up around the springtime con mi familia. My fiancé and I hope to create some new traditions with our own. I’ve always dreamed of doing crafts and baking with my child and I hope our little man will be just as enthused. I think for Dad and me, spending time outdoors is something we value and we hope to instill the benefits of nature into our son. What would you say has been the biggest challenge you faced during all of the changes in the last few years? What has been your biggest blessing? Wow! This is a good question. The biggest blessing, of course, has to be our son, Justin, who is now 10 months old. If Covid-19 has reminded us of anything, however, it is how health and life is so priceless. Just being here writing this, healthy, in a global pandemic is a blessing. It was a challenge finding that right balance between staying safe and living life, not wanting to miss out on those formative experiences with our new son. A pandemic delayed wedding plans and later, having our first child during a pandemic was scary. What if

I got Covid while pregnant? Was the new vaccine pregnancy-friendly? Am I doing enough? Am I washing my hands enough? Dad wasn’t allowed in some doctor’s appointments so he’s hearing the heartbeat through the phone. There were visitor restrictions in the delivery room so we FaceTime’d our families after the birth. With this being our first child, this experience is all I knew. I have heard similar stories from a lot of new moms.

My favorite quote came from a colleague soon after I became a Mom. She said “Breathe through the tough times, soak in the good times. Life is fleeting.” I look back at the newborn phase and while some of those nights seemed long (actually, any day of nursing felt long), it all seems like such a blur. Each chapter goes by so quickly and I am committed to being so invested and so present, albeit so sleepy. k

What advice would you give a woman who is balancing family and career? What was the best advice you were given? I am so grateful that our company offers a very generous maternity leave program, but if I’m being honest, I had some guilt taking the amount of time offered. Our business is driven by visibility. Could being off television for months hurt my career? Colleagues told me I would never regret taking the time to be home with our new son. A former boss gave me the best advice. She said, “Look at it this way; you taking the full time off blazes the trail for other women and allows them to feel as though, they, too, should take it.” In fact, my maternity leave made me a better employee and

Autism Speaks connects families and caregivers of children with autism to essential skills through Caregivers Skills Training program Source: FIU’s Center for Speaks Children and Families Source: Autism

Reaching underserved and under-resourced communities, The World Health Organization program, created with support from Autism Speaks, teaches caregivers day-to-day skills to best support children with developmental disabilities Servili, who leads WHO’s work on the mental and brain health of children and adolescents. “We are delighted that eCST is now available on WHO's learning platform, giving caregivers the opportunity to navigate the program at their own pace.” The in-person version of the program has already been piloted in more than 30 countries worldwide, including locations in the U.S. Acceptance of the program in a wide range of communities was high, with the leveraging of evidence-based methods and a family-centric approach empowering caregivers with knowledge to better understand and engage with their autistic children.

A

s World Autism Month commences, Autism Speaks is offering families in the U.S. and around the world access to free resources to help children with autism reach their full potential. The World Health Organization (WHO) Caregiver Skills Training (CST) for Families of Children with Developmental Delays or Disabilities, developed with the support of Autism Speaks, addresses the lack of specialized care available in some parts of the world and teaches caregivers day-to-day skills that foster the growth of children with autism and other developmental disabilities. With research highlighting the effectiveness of caregiver-mediated interventions, the WHO CST program is specifically designed to be implemented by non-specialist providers, which is particularly helpful in low-resource communities.

“Limited information and services make it difficult for many families to provide the best care for their loved ones,” said Pamela Dixon, director of clinical services and inclusion at Autism Speaks. “We’re thrilled to join forces with WHO and our partners in the U.S to offer caregivers clear and accessible guidance for everyday life. With tips on a wide range of issues such as problem-solving to selfcare, these tools help the child’s growth and development, giving every child with autism the opportunity to unlock their full potential.” On April 2, WHO is releasing an online, self-guided eCST platform, making the program accessible to anyone with an internet connection. “WHO’s digital CST experience, eCST, delivers pre-recorded courses and digital content, including quick tip videos, quizzes and prompts, to caregivers who lack access to inperson group trainings,” said Dr. Chiara

Through demonstrations, coaching and group discussions, caregivers participating in the in-person program learn to use everyday play and home routines as opportunities to build their child’s communication, engagement, positive behavior and daily living skills, all while building their own confidence, reducing stress and improving their overall well-being. Program participants gain insight directly from trained community members and other families to further strengthen their local support network. In delivering resources to help children with autism and their families reach their full potential, Autism Speaks continues to support the autism community, providing research, advocacy, services and supports to individuals across the autism spectrum and throughout the life span with the goal of creating a kinder, more inclusive world. k Learn more about Autism Speaks and World Autism Month at: www.autismspeaks.org.

tips

Protecting Children in a Digital Age

K

eeping a watchful eye on your kids requires an increasing level of tech savvy many parents find intimidating. Not only are your kids vulnerable to bad actors online, but your family's personal information could be at risk, as well. Learn how to protect your children and family in this digital age with these tips: Elementary-Age Children

• Encourage open communication.

Have conversations about what your kids see and do online and talk with them about potential dangers. Avoid lecturing in favor of an open exchange of information.

• Make their inherent interest in

privacy work in your favor. Kids in this age group, particularly toward the middle school years, understand the concept of privacy and value it immensely. Use that context to help them understand what goes online is there to stay. Talk about what kinds of information should always be kept private, including identifying details like addresses and social security numbers.

restaurant can allow a predator to begin tracking behavior patterns that make your child a target. It's also important for kids to understand how their privacy settings work. For example, settings that allow exposure to friends of friends make their visibility to strangers much broader than they may realize.

• Help manage their online reputation.

Behaviors that once resulted in a day or two of hallway chatter can now live forever. Documenting mischief online is only fun until it spills over into real life and everyone sees those mistakes in full color - including prospective future employers.

• Be clear about your position on

bullying. From the safe distance of a screen, it's easier for kids (and adults) to say things they'd never say in person. Teach your kids

to handle problems constructively offline and avoid engaging in attacks on others through social media, email and other platforms. College Students

• Reinforce the risks. Once they're on

their own, kids may feel more liberated to make their own choices online. However, college students are easy prey for identity theft and worse. Remind them what's at stake if they fail to protect their identity and private information, like where they live and what they do on a regular basis.

• Teach smart practices. With all the

independence that comes with college life, this is an ideal time for your student to take personal responsibility for his or her online security, including learning about virus protection, updating software, avoiding scams and backing up data. k

• Stay on alert. Not all apps are

completely safe (even the ones you can access from trusted stores) and not all filters are foolproof. Keep close tabs son what your kids are downloading by reading comments and reviews, and regularly monitoring what kind of content they see. Middle School and High School Kids

• Continue talking about privacy. You

can never have too many conversations about privacy. What seems like harmless sharing on social media can be quite revealing. For example, frequent posts about visits to a favorite store or it’s just about kids | kiddosmagazine.com

Make Easter 'Eggstra' Special 6 tips to bring your family together to decorate eggs

aster is about traditions, both old and new, as well as celebrating family and creating lifelong memories. In fact, nearly 8 out of 10 Americans will celebrate the holiday this year, according to the National Retail Federation, which often includes egg decorating amongst the fun. Decorating eggs for Easter is a tradition that dates back to the 13th century. Eggs were once viewed as a forbidden food to some religious entities, so people would paint or decorate them to highlight the end of penance and fasting. Yet still today, coloring eggs can help bring the whole family together and inspire simple moments of connection and creativity. From dunking eggs in neon dyes to embellishing them with paint, glitter and more, PAAS(r) brand - named after the Dutch word for Easter, "Passen" - offers these expert Easter egg dyeing tips based on its 140 years of experience.

1

Keep It Clean - Wash your hands in hot, soapy water before and after handling eggs, even if they've already been cooked or decorated. This helps protect you from any bacteria that may be on the

egg and protects the eggshell from oil on hands that may make the dye not adhere properly. Make sure an adult supervises all projects to ensure food safety precautions are observed.

2

Hard Cook, Don't Hard Boil - Although the cooking water must come to a full boil, the pan should be immediately removed from heat so the eggs can cook gently in the hot water. This method produces tender, not rubbery eggs and minimizes cracking.

3

Banish the Greenish Ring - This harmless but unsightly discoloration sometimes forms around hard-cooked yolks as a result of a reaction between sulfur in the egg white and iron in the yolk. It occurs when eggs have been cooked for too long or at too high a temperature. Cooking eggs in hot, not boiling water then cooling immediately helps minimize this discoloration.

4

Make Them "Apeeling" - To ensure easily peeled eggs, buy and refrigerate them 7-10 days in advance of cooking. This brief "breather" allows the eggs

time to take in air, which helps separate the membranes from the shell.

5

Store Eggs Safely - In the shell, hard-cooked eggs can be refrigerated safely for up to one week. Refrigerating them in their original carton prevents odor absorption. Once peeled, eggs should be eaten that day. Piercing shells before cooking is not recommended. If not sterile, the piercer or needle can introduce bacteria into the egg. Also, piercing creates hairline cracks in the shell through which bacteria can enter after cooking.

6

Tap Into Your Creative Side - You don't have to be highly creative to create an "eggceptional" egg. Use your imagination to create appealing eggs by gluing on fun materials found at craft stores, like fake gems, sequins, trims and ribbons. You can also use paint, including gold or silver metallic paint, to make eggs special. An option like PAAS egg decorating kits can help make the process more convenient and fun. How to Hard Cook Eggs Hard-cooked eggs are best when you want a sturdy egg for hiding and to eat when you're done. They are also easier for younger children to handle. Eggs can be hard-boiled or baked to achieve tender eggs perfect for dyeing. Hard Boil Directions • Place eggs in saucepan large enough to hold them in single layer. • Add cold water to cover eggs by 1 inch. • Heat pan over high heat until just boiling. • Remove pan from burner. • Cover pan. • Let eggs stand in hot water about 15 minutes for large eggs. Time may need adjusted for smaller or larger eggs. • Cool completely under cold running water or in bowl of ice water. • Refrigerate until ready to use. k Find more tips and ideas to bring your family together this Easter at www. paaseastereggs.com.

3 Ways to Walk the Line Between Protective and Overprotective Written by: Anna Brink

I

remember the day I realized I was an overprotective mom. “Can I play soccer in the cul-de-sac?” my 13-year-old daughter asked one afternoon. “Who are you playing with?” “Bryce, Brayden, and Jacob,” she answered. “Um, no,” I replied automatically. “Three boys? No.” And an argument ensued that ended in tears. Why all the drama over a simple soccer game? I didn’t know two of the three boys she listed—and because I thought I was keeping my young, naïve teenage daughter safe, when, in fact, I was being an overprotective mom. I want to be a mom who is protective just enough. You know, like enough that my kids make it to adulthood in one piece, without crossing that fine line into helicopter mom territory. Here are three L’s to keep you from stepping over the line from protective to overprotective mom.

Overprotection happens when we are operating primarily from fear rather than from wisdom.

Learn Sometimes overprotective moms are actually disconnected from their kid’s world, and therefore they assume the worst in every situation. So before you jump in to protect, take a step back and get reconnected. Does the music your teen listens to sound awful as you hear it from his or her bedroom? Get to know the music firsthand before jumping to conclusions. Are you afraid that your child’s friends are a bad influence? Invite them over and get to know them. Had I gotten to know Bryce, Braden, and Jacob, I quickly would’ve learned that I had nothing to worry about. Ask yourself this: “What do I need to learn about my child at this stage?” Limit We know kids need limits, as much as they may not like them. (I mean really, who likes limits?) But instead of just giving orders like a drill sergeant, talk about your expectations and why they are needed. And if you aren’t sure whether you’re an overprotective mom whose limits are too strict, do some homework. Talk to your friends and neighbors, read articles, and listen to parenting podcasts to give you a good frame of reference. Ask yourself this: “Have I set reasonable limits and talked to my kids about them?” Live The prefix “over” means “above or too much.” If you are trying to protect your child so much that you can’t relax or your child is missing out on life because of what might go wrong, then you may be overprotective. Think of Marlin in Finding Nemo. Out of the best intentions, he protected

Nemo too much. Neither one of them could truly “live” because there was so much fear. Overprotection happens when we are operating primarily from fear rather than from wisdom. In the end, Marlin learned that “bad” things could be valuable growth experiences for Nemo. Ask yourself this: “Am I living from a place of wisdom or fear? Am I letting my child live his or her own life, trusting that the hard things will bring growth?” Moving from Overprotective Mom to “Just Protective Enough” That’s what this is really about—learning to let go of control as your kids grow up. It’s like holding the rope for someone who is repelling; you’ve got to let it out a little bit at a time as he or she navigates down the mountain. And we have to

let go, or our kids will get stuck on the side! We have to trust that they will make it down. All the bumps and bruises along the way will only make them smarter and stronger and give them some stories to tell their own kids someday.

3 Problems Kids Face That Aren’t Talked About Source: Family First

I

remember Alicia from fifth grade. Although, my memory is foggy because it seemed like she missed more school than she attended. You never really knew what to expect with her. Sometimes, she was quiet and other times, she was the class clown. She didn’t have many friends because she cried and lost her temper a lot, and as 11-yearolds, we didn’t know how to handle that. Back then, people didn’t talk about these types of challenges for kids, but I assume, based on what I know now, that she was struggling with something mental health-related. Now, as a mom, my heart breaks for other moms whose kids have challenges like this, especially challenges that come with a greater social stigma. It makes it even harder for parents and children to get the help and support they need. But by talking about these increasingly common problems, we can help affected

26

kiddos | April • May 2022

Deal with the challenges and solutions needed today and address tomorrow as it comes. families realize that they’re not alone and help these children to thrive. We might be having more conversations now than we did back when I was 11, but here are 3 problems kids face that still aren’t talked about enough. 1. Mental Illness Approximately one in 10 young people ages five to 16 have a diagnosable mental health disorder. These can range from conduct disorders like severe ADHD to mood disorders like anxiety and depression. If your child suffers: • You’re not alone. There are likely other children in your child’s class who struggle with mental health or eventually will. You have no reason to feel guilty or ashamed and neither does your child. • Ask for help. You may have to play the role of advocate and educator with your child’s teachers, but hopefully,

you’ll find most are willing to help when equipped with the right information. Make them your partners in creating an environment in which your child can meet his or her full potential. • Take it one day at a time. Often, when we worry about our children, our greatest, most overwhelming fear is the unknown. Deal with the challenges and solutions needed today and address tomorrow as it comes. 2. Eating Disorders While serious eating disorders are typically associated with older adolescent girls, they do affect younger children and boys as well. National surveys estimate that 20 million women and 10 million men in America will have an eating disorder at some point in their lives. The causes of eating disorders are complex and include physiological, emotional, and cultural influences. Our children today are bombarded with media and

marketing that distort their perception of “normal,” making more of them susceptible to these disorders. If your child suffers: • Act quickly. While extreme nutritional habits might be dismissed as an adolescent phase, you can’t afford to let them take hold. • Involve professionals. It’s tempting to think you can handle this, but there are evidence-based treatments that can help your child. Seek them out. • Approach it like any other illness. Don’t be angry with your child—he or she can’t help it and would stop it if he or she could. 3. Learning Disabilities In our highly-competitive world filled with “My Child is an Honor Student at…” bumper stickers, it can be hard to admit that your child struggles. But learning problems don’t necessarily indicate a lack of intelligence. Many times, a learning disability simply means your child learns differently. By diagnosing

and addressing the challenge early, you can help your child get back on track with less frustration and less damage to his or her self-esteem. If your child suffers: • Deal with the diagnosis. That information can help you unravel the mystery of how your child learns and help him or her to succeed! Rather than endure years of frustration and academic failures, you can now address the real issues and make things better. • Communicate well. Remember: You are the common hub for all the

information and feedback with your child’s therapists, teachers, and guidance counselors, and you play an important role in keeping everyone on the same page. • Encourage your child. Academic hardship can be rough on a child’s selfesteem. Remind your kid that he or she is smart but just needs a different approach! Don’t forget to celebrate the wins. k

From the tip of a chimney, we bound into the quiet and mischievous world of feelings, meeting a troupe of tufted creatures as we go. interview

Interview with Julie Brooks, Head of School, KLA Academy k

We are KLA Academy in Miami — Serving Infants through 5th grade, Preschool & Elementary those interests. This type of learning provides students with the opportunity to learn the basics, to learn critical thinking skills, and to develop executive functioning skills in an authentic and in an intrinsically-motivated way. One of the hallmarks of our program is “the environment as the third teacher”. Our classrooms are intentionally designed and set up to provoke thinking and to dive deeply into all aspects of learning.

KM

Can you tell us a little bit about your background as an educator, and how you arrived at KLA Academy? JB. I have a Master’s degree in Education and over 30 years of experience within the public and private sectors of Education. I have taught in Texas, Okinawa, and in California. I also have worked for 20 years as an administrator in private and independent schools such as St. Mary and All Angels (Aliso Viejo, California); Hammond School (Columbia, SC) and Latin School of Chicago (Chicago, IL). I became very interested in the Reggio Emilia approach many years ago. In 2016 I was fortunate to take several early childhood and elementary teachers to a study group in Reggio Emilia, Italy, which further fueled my interest. I was drawn to KLA Academy as it was a school that was clearly authentic in its Reggio Emilia philosophy and approach to Education. I joined KLA Academy in July 2021. It truly was one of those things that was meant to be!

KM

What is unique about KLA Academy? How does it stand out from other schools? JB. KLA has an innovative and progressive approach to education that is well grounded in research-based practices and pedagogy. Our students drive their own learning, and teachers build off of

32

kiddos | April • May 2022

KM

Can you provide us with a basic understanding of the Reggio Emilia approach? What does that entail, and how does it impact education? JB. Based on principles of respect, quality, responsibility, and community, a philosophy was born. In the Reggio Emilia Approach, there is a coined phrase, “a child has a hundred languages.” The approach unites and develops all languages of expression – innovation, nature, construction, fantasy, art, music, dance, building, writing, talking, singing, science, body, and more. Through the multiple languages of expression, children build knowledge and an understanding of the world around them. When you think about the role of the teacher in a Reggio Emilia class, it’s about being a partner to the student… learning to listen, to see, to observe, and to interpret the children’s actions, thoughts, and the logic of their investigation. Then, we can better understand the processes

they choose for developing personal relationships and acquiring knowledge. The educators’ responsibility is to design and offer contexts that sustain these processes and foster relationships.

KM

What are some of your goals for the school? JB. My main goal is for KLA Academy to be a leader in early childhood and elementary education. We prepare our students for the next steps in their lives as well as an unknown future. As evidenced by our first class of graduating 5th graders, our students are prepared for learning environments of their choice. No matter where they choose to attend, we know they have the necessary tools, confidence, and flexibility to be successful in middle school and beyond.

KM

On a personal note, tell us a little bit about yourself ? JB. I am passionate about Education and have always strived to be an agent of change, advocating for progressive, childfirst policies and programs to impact the lives of a myriad of students and families. I am originally from Texas, but I have lived all over: Texas, Okinawa Japan, California, Utah, South Carolina, Chicago… I adore the beach and love traveling! My top three favorite places would be Budapest, Paris and New Orleans. In my free time I enjoy knitting, reading, and Pilates. k
