Welcome spooky inhabitants of planet earth I can still remember last year’s Halloween. I spent all day working on finishing the Halloween Special and at the end of the day I went to a notso-fun Halloween party with my friends (read all about it in this special!). I remember the fun I had while shooting photos for the special, I remember going to several different stores to get the best Halloween candy I could find and I remember how a single holiday (which we don’t even celebrate here in the Netherlands) could give me such joy. This year at Halloween, I’m a freshly graduated girl, already working a nine to five job and having adult responsibilities. But this year at Halloween, the Holy Glitter Zine is here to help me be my silly, childish self again. No matter what age, what race, what sex or what beliefs you have: just remember to stay spooky!

Once upon a time there was a peaceful little place, Which was a wonderful world for the entire human race. Everyone was happy, living without sorrow, No fear, no pain, no tears, not thinking about tomorrow. But then, one day, there was this dust, Which blew that hamlet away with a giant distructive gust. The people stopped dancing, the streets started to cry, The fish, they drowned and the birds couldn’t remember how to fly. The lights went out and darkness came, And even that peaceful little village lost its name.

I’ve been living in the Netherlands my whole life and unfortunately Halloween hasn’t really been a thing here. The past few years it has gained popularity, but it’s still unusual to see Halloween decorations at someone’s doorstep or going to a Halloween party in full costume. Last year my friends and I decided to try and look for a cool Halloween party. For some reason, I’ve really came to like Halloween and I wanted to experience the “dressing up, eating candy and being spooky”- vibe, if only just once. Back then we didn’t have that much money to spend so we looked for a free Halloween party and yes, we found one at a pop venue in the city! An 80s themed Halloween party with cool rock music at a fancy place; that sounded fun! On Halloween Night we gathered at a friend’s house and got ready. We dressed up as an evil devil, a cute alien and a creepy eyeball-girl. Really awesome but subtle looks if you ask me! We left for the party and once we entered, we were taken by surprise- and no, not in a good way. Our expectation: a Halloween party with cool 80s music, people in their twenties all dressed up in cool costumes and having fun all night long. Reality: a small bunch of old people (who used to be young back in the 80s), slightly drunk and not even dressed for Halloween, listening to weird alternative 80s metal. We tried staying there, but after 15 minutes we realized this party wasn’t meant for us young girls. We went back home and had our own private Halloween party – just the three of us. We listened to our own favourite Halloween heroes and had a shit ton of candy. Eventually, we had a really awesome night, but you could say the actual Halloween party was a total fail… This year we’re skipping the Halloween parties, but perhaps we could try again next year?
