reetings, “We don’t quit playing because we grow old. We grow old because we quit playing.” This is one of my favorite quotes to live by. While eating healthy, exercise, sleep, spiritual practices are all vital so is a playful outlook and regular just plain old play. I think that sometimes we, I know I, take life too seriously. There are so many things on the to-do list. There is more work than can possibly be done in the time we have to do it. If we can’t get it all done in the time we have, how CAN we get it done if we take time off to have play? Well, how can we get it done if we break down because we didn’t take time off to rest and recreate? Hmmm. So, take time. Give yourself permission to have a down day, a goof-off day once in a while. You aren’t a bad person because you didn’t get something done today. If you must, schedule time off and time for fun stuff, a guy’s night out or girl’s night out or a date night once a month at least. In one of the most structured, scheduled jobs I’ve ever had, the first staff meeting when we all set up our calendars our boss told us to start by putting birthdays, anniversaries and other important personal and family dates in our work calendars. Maybe your life isn’t that structured but sometimes when you don’t plan to have some fun you are planning to have no fun. And speaking of planning… Studies have shown that the planning for that vacation or get away or romantic night out produces more good endorphins than the actual vacation or get away or night out itself. So make plans and enjoy making those plans. There are lots of free and inexpensive things to do right here in Houston listed in our calendar. There are thought provoking articles in this month’s issue. Take advantage of the opportunities that present themselves to you and have fun doing it. Until next month…

Phoenicia Specialty Foods Celebrates 30 Years!

Phoenicia Specialty Food Downtown, 1001 Austin Street, 77010. Phoenicia Specialty Food West, 12141 Westheimer Road, 77007. Arpi’s Phoenicia Deli, 12151 Westheimer Road, 77007. Yumstop.com and PhoeniciaFoods.com.

hoenicia Specialty Foods is a dream that started modestly 30 years ago. In 1983 Arpi and Zohrab Tcholakian, formerly of Lebanon, and of Armenian descent, opened Phoenicia Deli on Westheimer Road. Despite the economic downturn in the 1980’s the business grew. In 1992, they leased space to store the imported goods they were receiving. Soon, retail and wholesale customers started going to the storage space for a case of their desired, hard to find specialty items, and eventually this grocery section became a specialty food market. In 2006 the family further branched out and opened Phoenicia Specialty Foods across the street from the deli. The enterprise has continued to grow ever since thanks to loyal, local Phoodie friends. Much of Phoenicia’s success has been due to importing power that has kept prices reasonable for patrons. In November of 2011, Phoenicia Specialty Foods Downtown opened its doors at the fabulous One Park Place luxury high-rise across from Discover Green. Downtown residents and workers now have a one-stop shop stocked with all the market’s signature food favorites. Phoenicia Downtown also features MKT Bar, an in-house gastro-pub that accommodates as many as 260 guests. This hip, urban hangout is the perfect stop before the theater, after a sporting event or just to enjoy a tasty night out. Complimentary parking available. Come and experience the YUMMY! first hand at either of Phoenicia’s two locations.

Green Planet Sanctuary-Reboot!

G

reen Planet Sanctuary is one of a few cool places in Houston that you either know how to find your you don’t since it tucked in behind an auto repair shop off of Briar Forest in west Houston. It’s a green oasis of quiet right not far from a busy shopping center. In 2000, Cathy Ingram opened it as Garden Dreams, her landscaping business. After eight years in doing landscaping, Cathy decided to scale back the physical maintenance part of the business and just focus on landscape design but what to do with the property? Several of her friends suggested she turn it into a place where like-minded, people could come to feel the peace and quiet that comes from closeness to the earth. So, the barn became a yoga studio, the bedrooms became offices for various holistic practitioners and things evolved with the addition of a labyrinth and a pond. While the Houston area has lots of great metaphysical places, Green Planet Sanctuary is one that is more about connections to this world and each other, and sustainability than other worldliness. On September 12, Green Planet Sanctuary will have a grand re-opening featuring The Tea Den as a joint venture with Bean’s Café and Yutumi. The Tea Den will feature custom tea blends, slow juice and coffee as well as local handmade crafts and Go Texas items. Regular hours will be Wednesday & Thursday 9-7, Friday and Saturday 9-9 and Sunday 10-5. Whether you come for yoga and stay for tea or come for tea and experience the salt water flotation tank or just come to hang out. Join us for our Grand Re-Opening. Once you’ve found Green Planet Sanctuary, you will come back. Green Planet Sanctuary, 13424-B Briar Forest Drive 77077. Visit online at GreenPlanetSanctuary.com.

Yoga Boosts Brain Gray Matter

R

esearch from the Brain Imaging and Analysis Center at Duke University Medical Center has found that a regular hatha yoga practice increases gray matter within the brain, reversing the loss found among those with chronic pain. The researchers tested seven hatha yoga meditation practitioners and seven non-practitioners. Each of the subjects underwent tests for depression, anxiety, moods and cognition levels, along with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) brain scans. The scientists found that the brains of the yoga meditation practitioners contained significantly greater gray matter by volume in key brain regions, including the frontal, temporal and occipital cortices, plus the cerebellum and the hippocampus, compared to the non-yoga subjects. The yoga meditation practitioners also had more gray area in the prefrontal cortex regions that are involved in decision-making, reward/consequence, control and coordination.

Support Groups Keep Artery Patients Mobile

R

esearch published in the Journal of the American Heart Association has determined that when peripheral artery disease patients engage in behavioral support groups that encourage exercise, they realize increased mobility. The researchers from Northwestern University followed 194 patients for a year, testing subjects at six months and again at 12 months. The patients were divided into two groups; one attended weekly intervention group meetings, while the control group attended weekly lectures. After six months, the researchers found that only 6.3 percent of those that attended the support group meetings experienced mobility loss, compared to 26.5 percent of those that didn’t attend the meetings. After one year, the support group attendees again showed positive results. The control group had 18.5 percent loss in mobility, while only 5.2 percent of the support group attendees did.

Daily Exercise Adds Five Years to Life

R

esearch published this year in the British Journal of Sports Medicine has determined that just 30 minutes of exercise, six days a week, can result in a reduced risk of early death by 40 percent, regardless of the intensity of the exercise. The researchers followed nearly 15,000 men born between 1923 and 1932. The men’s exercise and sedentary levels were measured along with the number of deaths that occurred during two 12-year study periods. In the second 12-year period, the researchers followed almost 6,000 of the surviving men. The researchers compared those men that were sedentary with those that exercised either moderately or intensely and found that moderate to intense exercise increased their average lifespan by five years. This improvement was comparable to the difference between smoking and non-smoking, according to the researchers. The data comes from the Norwegian School of Sport Sciences, in Oslo. The scientists’ finding confirms that public health practices for elderly men should include efforts to increase physical activity, along with efforts to reduce smoking.

Smog Increases Stroke Risk

R

esearch from Germany has found that the high particulate numbers in smoggy areas increase the risk of stroke. The Heinz Nixdorf Recall study followed more than 4,400 people between the ages of 45 and 74 years old. The researchers began the study in 2000. They compared stroke and heart attacks to air pollution particulate matter (PM) levels of PM10 (particle sizes of 10 micrometers or less) and PM2.5 (2.5 micrometers or less). The study found that stroke incidence was more than twoand-a-half times higher among people with long-term exposure to PM10, while stroke incidence increased by more than three times among people with long-term exposure to PM2.5 smog.

GREEN TEA, APPLES AND COCOA PROTECT AGAINST CANCER AND ARTERIAL PLAQUE

R

esearch published in Molecular Nutrition & Food Research has found a new mechanism that may provide the key to why some foods are particularly healthy. The researchers found that epigallocatechin gallates, a class of polyphenols contained in green tea, apples, cocoa and other herbs and foods, blocks vascular endothelial growth factor, or VEGF, which is implicated in the buildup of plaque in the arteries, as well as cancer growth. Blocking VEGF helps prevent angiogenesis—when tumors form new blood vessels that help them grow. The researchers, from the Institute of Food Research, in Norwich, in the United Kingdom, tested the polyphenols, as well as human cells, in the laboratory.

A Third of U.S. Power May Be Wind by 2050

Embracing Invasives

Environmental journalist Fred Pearce, author of the new book, The New Wild: Why Invasive Species Will Be Nature’s Salvation, traveled across six continents and ecosystems from remote Pacific islands to the United Kingdom and the Great Lakes to reveal some outdated scientific ideas about invasive species and the balance of nature. Pearce argues that mainstream environmentalists are correct that we need a rewilding of the Earth, but they are wrong if they believe it can be achieved by reengineering ecosystems. He thinks that humans have changed the planet too much, and nature never goes backward. But a growing group of scientists is taking a fresh look at how species interact in the wild. According to these new ecologists, we should applaud the dynamism of alien species and the new ecosystems they create. In an era of climate change and widespread ecological damage, it’s crucial that we find ways to help nature regenerate. Embracing this new ecology, Pearce proposes, is our best chance, maintaining, “To be an environmentalist in the 21st century means celebrating nature’s wildness and capacity for change.”

According to a new study by the U.S. Energy Department (Tinyurl.com/ EnergyDepartmentWindReport), wind power could provide more than a third of the nation’s electricity in a few decades, while posting a net savings in energy costs. Undersecretary for Technology and Energy Lynn Orr, Ph.D., states, “With continued commitment, wind can be the cheapest, cleanest option in all 50 states by 2050.” Wind power has tripled since 2000, and now supplies nearly 5 percent of the country’s electric power. The report says that it could dramatically reduce air pollution and go a long way toward meeting the country’s goals of slowing climate change. Meanwhile, Spanish engineers have invented the Vortex Bladeless wind turbine, a hollow straw that sticks up 40 feet from the ground and vibrates when the wind passes through it. Instead of using a propeller, the Vortex takes advantage of an aerodynamic effect called vorticity. The result is a turbine that’s 50 percent less expensive than a bladed model and is nearly silent. It’s not as efficient as conventional turbines, but more of them can be placed in the same amount of space, for a net gain of 40 percent in efficiency. Plus, with no gears or moving parts, maintenance is much easier and they are safer for bats and birds.

Tips on ImprovingHome Energy Efficiency by Shen Ge

aking sure your home is as energy efficient as possible helps in ensuring that your solar panels generate the maximum benefit for you. The analogy is like pouring water into a bucket with a giant hole at the bottom. You want to make sure your home doesn’t have a giant energy hole sucking away the benefits you’re getting from solar. As can be seen, the largest energy usage lies in heating and many of our tips have to do with keeping the heat in.

specializes in retrofitting buildings to make them more energy-efficient. You can pick up a roll of insulation for about $15 at home improvement stores.

Insulation keeps your house warm in the winter, cool in the summer and reduces heating and cooling costs by as much as 20 percent, according to Green Energy Solutions, Inc., a company that 16

A Programmable Thermostat

Programmable thermostats have become popular due to their energy- and moneysaving benefits. When used properly, this device can save users up to $150 per year, and it’s generally more accurate than a regular thermostat, according to Energy Star.

Energy usage according to US Department of Energy (Credit: US Department of Energy). When shopping for appliances, realize that there are two price tags. The first is the purchase price while the second is the cost of operating the appliance during its lifetime. Energy Star rated appliances including refrigerators, dishwashers, washers, and dryers are much more energy efficient than models which merely follow the minimum federal standards for energy efficiency. For instance, Energy Star refrigerators are 20% more efficient than non-qualified models. Fridges with freezers on top use 10 – 25% less energy than side or bottom-mounted units. Energy Star dishwashers are required to use less than 5.8 gallons of water per cycle, while older models before 1994 can use as much as 10 gallons per cycle. Just with this upgrade, you could save around $8 per year in energy costs.

Incandescent light bulbs are being phased out; the US wouldn’t be manufacturing any such light bulbs after this year. Fluorescent bulbs last four to 10 times longer than regular light bulbs. Another option is going with the more expensive but even longer-lasting LED bulb. If you enjoy a directional light for reading, cooking, or working at home, you might prefer the LED bulbs. For general home lighting, such as illuminating a room, CFL might be best.

You might be surprised to find how much money you could save by patching up your windows and doors. In homes that haven’t been weather stripped, air leaks account for 30 to 40 percent of heating and cooling loss, according to Energy Star. Weather stripping materials cost less than $10 for 15 feet.

Insulating Window Treatments

Cellular or honeycomb shades help you reduce heat loss (up to 86%) and heat gain (up to 80%) together. These shades start at about $25 a window.

Insulating Blanket For Water Heater

An electric water heater uses a significant amount of electricity compared to every other appliance. In fact, for a family of 2,

its costs can run over $200 a year. A $20 investment to buy a blanket wrapped around your water heater can cut down water-heating costs by 9%, according to the US Department of Energy. AGELESS BEING Staying Vibrant in Mind, Body and Spirit by Kathleen Barnes

Agelessness: Engaging in and experiencing life without fear of falling, failing or falling apart.

I

n a nutshell, that’s the philosophy of visionary women’s health expert Dr. Christiane Northrup, of Yarmouth, Maine, as explored in her latest book, Goddesses Never Age. “We’re long overdue for a paradigm shift about how we feel about growing older,” says Northrup. “You can change your future by adopting a new, ageless attitude that will help you flourish physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually. We don’t have to buy into modern medicine’s promotion of the idea of the pathology of aging.” O n e o f N o r t h r u p ’s p r i m a r y admonitions: “Don’t tell anyone how old you are. Another birthday means nothing.”

Maintain a Sound Mind

Our Western society fosters a belief 18

system that we will become decrepit, frail and mentally feeble at a certain age. “When my mother turned 50, her mailbox suddenly filled with ads for adult diapers, walkers and longterm care insurance,” Northrup quips. The point is well taken. Think vibrant, healthy, gorgeous and yes, sexy Sandra Bullock, Johnny Depp, Chris Rock and Brooke Shields—all 50 or older—as the targets of ads for Depend. We’re living and working longer, and many of us are feeling, looking and staying young longer. So is 60 the new 40? Yes, say State University of New York at Stony Brook researchers, and further note that we’re generally leading longer and healthier lives. Centenarians are the fastest-growing segment of the U.S. population. In the 2010 census, 53,364 people had

www.NaturalAwakenings-Houston.com

surpassed their 100th year, an increase of 40 percent over the 1980 census, and more than 80 percent of them are women. The National Institute on Aging projects that this number could increase tenfold or more by 2050. What we think of as “old” has changed. Many baby boomers refuse to buy into the mythology of aging, bristle at being called senior citizens and especially dislike being called elderly. Their position is backed by science. Stem cell biologist Bruce Lipton, Ph.D., author of Biology of Belief and currently a visiting professor at the New Zealand College of Chiropractic, in Auckland, is best known for promoting the concept that DNA can be changed by belief, for good or ill. Lipton explains that we all have billions of stem cells designed to repair or replace damaged—and aging— tissues and organs. “[These cells] are profoundly influenced by our thoughts and perceptions about the environment,” Lipton explains. “Hence our beliefs about aging can either interfere with or enhance stem cell function, causing our physiological regeneration or decline.” “Yes, we are destined to grow older, but decrepitude and what we call aging is an optional state,” Northrup adds. “Our genes, nutrition and environment are under our control far more than we may have thought.” More, she says, “Words are powerful. Don’t talk yourself into believing your brain is turning to mush just because you are over 40.”

Take Control of the Body

“Manage the four horsemen of the aging apocalypse,” encourages nutrition and longevity expert Jonny Bowden, Ph.D., a Los Angeles board-certified nutritionist and author of The Most Effective Ways to Live Longer. He says the aging process, including disease, loss of physical or mental function and the general breakdown of systems, is caused by one or more of four factors: oxidative damage (literally rusty cells); inflammation; glycation (excess sugar, metabolic syndrome); and stress. “Collectively, they damage cells and DNA, wear down organs and systems, deeply damage the vascular pathways that deliver blood and oxygen to the entire body, and even shrink brain size,”

explains Bowden. While it may seem like a tall order to make lifestyle changes that vanquish these four horsemen, Bowden says they can be broken into manageable elements by e m p l oy i n g a n arsenal of healthful weapons: whole foods, nutrients, stress-reduction techniques, exercise, detoxification and relationship improvement. “All of these actually do double duty, battling more than one of the four processes that can effectively shorten your life,” he reports, based on his 25 years of study.

and avidly avoiding residues of the poisonous pesticides and herbicides sprayed on crops eaten by people and livestock.

Oxidative Damage

This is the result of excessive sugar that glues itself to protein or fat molecules, leaving a sticky mess that creates advanced glycation end (AGE) products that damage all body systems and are acknowledged culprits in the dreaded diseases associated with aging. Bowden’s basic answer is to minimize intake of sugar and simple carbs; anything made with white flour or white rice. Also avoid fried dishes and any foods cooked at high temperatures that actually skip the glycation production in the body and deliver harmful AGEs directly from the food. He advises taking 1,000 mg of carnosine (available in health food stores) daily to prevent glycation.

Consider what rust does to metal. That’s what free radical oxygen molecules do to cells. Over time, they damage them and cause aging from within. “Oxidative damage plays a major role in virtually every degenerative disease of aging, from Alzheimer’s to cancer to heart disease and diabetes, even immune dysfunction,” says Bowden. His recommended key to destroying free radicals is a diet rich in antioxidants, including lots of fresh fruits and vegetables and healthy fats, nuts, grass-fed meats and organic dairy products. Avoid environmental free radicals that show up in toxic chemicals by eating as much organic food as possible

Compute Your Real Age Lifestyle choices can make our bodies older, or younger, than our number of orbits around the sun, according to Michael Roizen, a doctor of internal medicine and author of This is Your Do-Over: The 7 Secrets of Losing Weight, Living Longer, and Getting a Second Chance at the Life You Want. “Seventy percent of aging is in the simple things you do or don’t do,” he maintains.

Inflammation

Long-term inflammation is a silent killer because it operates beneath the radar, often unnoticed, damaging blood vessel walls. Like oxidative damage, inflammation is a factor in all the degenerative diseases associated with aging, says Bowden. His suggestion: First, get a C-reactive protein (CRP) test to determine the levels of inflammation in our body. A CRP level over 3 milligrams/liter indicates a high risk of a heart attack. Anti-inflammatory foods like onions, garlic, leafy greens, tomatoes, beans, nuts and seeds have all been widely scientifically proven to reduce chronic inflammation.

chronological age can’t be changed, “Your ‘real age’ [calculated from data he collected from 60 million people] is the result of a wide variety of factors that are within your control. Dietary choices alone can make you 13 years younger or older than your actual age.” Roizen adds uncontrolled portion sizes, tobacco use and physical inactivity to the list of life-shortening lifestyle options.

Stress

The long-term effects of physical, mental or emotional stress are tremendously damaging to the human physiology. Sustained exposure to the stress hormone cortisol can shrink parts of the brain, damage blood vessels, increase blood sugar levels, heart rate and blood pressure and contribute to chronic inflammation, according to wellestablished science recorded in the U.S. National Library of Medicine. Bowden warns, “Stress management is not a luxury.” In its many forms, including prayer, meditation and breathing exercises, it should be part of any agelessness program. Deep, restful sleep is as vital a component as ending toxic relationships, having a nurturing circle of friends and doing familiar, gentle exercise such as yoga or tai chi. Overall, Bowden adds, “Rather than thinking of such endeavors as antiaging, I strive to embody the concept of age independence. I admire former Supreme Court Associate Justice John Paul Stevens, who resigned from the court when he reached age 90 because he wanted to play more tennis.” Bowden recommends embracing the concept of “squaring the curve”, meaning that instead of anticipating and experiencing a long downhill slope of poor health leading to death, “I look at a long plateau of health, with a steep drop-off at the end.” Wellness guru Dr. Michael Roizen, chair of the Cleveland Clinic’s Wellness Institute, contends that although our 20

“If you don’t have some kind of spiritual foundation, literally, God help you,” says Northrup. “God isn’t confined to a book or a church, mosque or synagogue. Divinity is the creative loving, vital flow of life force that we’re all part of and connected to. Our bodies are exquisite expressions meant to embody, not deny our spirits.” Touch, pleasure and sex can be part of it, too. Individuals that have the most fulfilling sex lives live the longest, according to researchers conducting the University of California, Riverside’s Longevity Project. “Pleasure comes in infinite forms,” says Northrup. “It can mean the exquisite taste of a pear or the sound of an angelic symphony, the kiss of sun on skin, the laughter of a child, spending time with friends or creating a

pastel landscape. When you experience pleasure, God comes through and you become aware of your divine nature. You’ll find that joy comes in ways that are unique to you.” Connection with the natural world is an essential element of agelessness, says Northrup. “The human body evolved to walk on the Earth, drinking its water, breathing its air and basking in its sunlight.” The bottom line is, “Agelessness is all about vitality. Taking all the right supplements and pills, or getting the right procedure isn’t the prescription for anti-aging,” says this renowned physician. “It’s ageless living that brings back a sense of vibrancy and youthfulness.” We could live to be well over 100 years old and, as Northrup likes to paraphrase Abraham Hicks, of The Law of Attraction fame, “Wouldn’t you rather have your life end something like this: ‘Happy-healthy, happy-healthy, happyhealthy, dead.’ Isn’t that a lot better than suffering sickness, decrepitude and frailty for years?” Kathleen Barnes is the author of numerous books on natural health, her latest being Food Is Medicine: 101 Prescriptions from the Garden. Kindness in the Light of Compassion by His Holiness Swami Vidyadhishananda

D

harma is said to be complete when kindness and charity are practised as its integral components in addition to other basic tenets. Kindness and charity (dāna) are hailed as exemplary virtues, both of which are rooted in compassion. There is often the tendency to mix up kindness (dayā) with compassion (karunā) from a practical perspective. Sanskrit philosophical usage, however, clearly distinguishes between these qualities. Compassion is usually not directly mentioned as part of the standard principles of what dharma entails. This is because compassion is a state of being achieved through the work of introspection based on transcending passion. Sanskrit wisdom teachings point out that dharma clings to the one who is a compassionate being. Whereas kindness permeates through offerings whenever kindly acts are undertaken without any expectation of receiving in return. Of course, charitable intent is often closely linked with the random acts of kindness. Kindness is said to be more rooted in compassion when the nature of the offering is impersonal. Herein impersonal implies impartiality with regard to name and fame. Similarly, charity is said to be rooted in compassion when the recipients are worthy of their cause and the charitable intent is pure and impersonal. In both cases impersonal also relates to the absence of an urge to seek recognition by the practitioner. One may participate repeatedly in random

acts of kindness which will surely purify the heart. However, this does not automatically make one compassionate. A kind person may be responding to a particular situation but might not fully relate to what is the cause of suffering. Kindness surely harbours a giving quality and beautifully turns a situation into an opportunity to practice a virtue. However, this does not necessarily allow the kind person to be anchored in a state of compassion. Kindness might not itself yield to forgiveness, whereas compassion itself teaches how to forgive. Similarly, humility should not be mistaken as a sign of compassion. Humility is the fruit of seeking ripened by the light of knowledge. Humility might make one polite but not necessarily compassionate. Similarly, a genuine donor supporting a noble cause cannot be deemed to be established in compassion based simply on the charitable or hospitable intent. Compassion is an internal freedom wherein the compassionate one can natural awakenings

fully relate to what is residing in the heart of the sufferer (or enjoyer). It implies that the compassionate one has overridden all experiences and their consequences. The compassionate one naturally exhibits integrated behavior in all interactions. Such a person attains an incredible capacity to relate to all emotions, cope with all contradictions and exhibit an extraordinary maturity of personality as if knowing about all kinds of experiences. There is a smooth efficiency and effectiveness in all actions guided by an expanded vision. The creativity of such a person is a source of inspiration to all others and they teach everyone around them when and how to let go. A higher yoga of balance emanates from their wisdom, wherein raw passions of reaction and overreaction are overridden so effortlessly. Therefore a compassionate being is neither enamoured by the world nor needing to be critical of the worldly ways. While kindness might subside somewhat after the act and might rise again at an appropriate opportunity, compassion is said to be a state of knowing whereupon the evenness of mind exudes a natural benevolence. A general attitude of kindness is helpful in preparing oneself towards compassion. It is the compassionate one who graces all around with equanimity and deep understanding. Kindness and other virtues practiced over time can mature into compassion provided there is the cultivation of dispassion (vairāgya) September 2015

through mindful disengagement from worldly distractions. Herein the burden of growth into a state of compassion rests upon those who are so called more highly evolved. The challenge of compassion poses an interesting enigma. The contact of our subtle sense organs with the objects of the world guided by the condition of mind, ego and intellect manifests the experience of pleasure, pain and stupefaction. The capacities and limitations of the subtle sense organs determine the nature and degree of the experience. Obviously the ability to experience is markedly different between species based on their evolution. The more highly evolved is the intelligence, the greater is the range of pleasure and pain. The wider is the swing of pleasure and pain, the greater is the burden of achieving compassion. This is why the Sanskrit wisdom teachings urge a server to recognize the value of aiming higher at nobler actions and thus help transcend passion. Dharma teaches that the ambition to succeed should be measured against the wisdom of right action. Moreover, the passion to achieve must disengage from the fruits of the labour for real success to prevail.

22

Houston

Yoga philosophy teaches a beautiful way to compassion. Of course, it rests in the understanding of the trinity passion, dispassion and compassion. Dispassion towards worldly allurement is the support for persistent practice (abhyト《a). Herein practice implies a gathered focus on the right action that prevents derailment from a higher path. Regularly practicing proven meditation techniques or earnestly praying for greater benevolence would be deemed as persistent practice. Such practice brings about spiritual clarity and discriminative wisdom. Furthermore, consistent spiritual practice aids dispassion. Meditation takes hold when dispassion and persistent practice are both invoked. Of course, dispassion matures in stages based on understanding the consequences of worldly engagements and due to the spiritual clarity gained from introspective practices. Dispassion is not necessarily an antithesis to spirited participation. On the contrary, the right energy is applied behind a performance. So much so that dispassion ushers in a way to become a mighty performer, until one reaches the highest stages and naturally withdraws from the need to act externally.

www.NaturalAwakenings-Houston.com

Dispassion stops the flow of the mind towards seeking pleasure and prevents entrapment from the realms of passion. Dispassion allows a practitioner to realize that the opposite of pleasure is not pain, but the absence of pain. Deeply cultivated dispassion helps rid oneself of misery and further strengthens spiritual practice, even leading to the transition from concentration to calmness, from one-pointed focus to tranquility. Dispassion towards worldly attractions cultivates compassion for the world; such is the experience. This is verifiable and visible among sages, saints and noble servers. Through dispassion one transcends passion into compassion. And this requires consistent spiritual practice. A compassionate one certainly deems enjoyment of pleasure to be insatiable. A compassionate being discerns bliss from pleasure. Compassion makes repose in bliss attainable. A compassionate one is always kind. His Holiness Swami Vidyadhishananda will be offering a series of public events in Houston this September. For details see the ad on page 11 or visit swamahiman.org/houston.

Face Your Mind to Recognize Disease Patterns by Gladys Wesley-Kennedy Master Gladys has been called back to the monastery in China for a six week sabbatical. During her absence we present a few of “the best of Master Gladys” articles from previous years.

A

s you read this article, you, like many other Americans, may be wrought with concerns about the future of healthcare, global warming, disappearing rainforests, animal extinction, money, and job security. Consequently, perhaps, you, like many Americans, live with underlying feelings of fear, angst, depression, or helplessness. Perhaps even, you, like many Americans, overly consume food and drink, excessively watch TV; and, regularly use stimulants, addictive substances, or pharmaceuticals, all in a futile attempt to achieve some level of… relief. If you have any such feelings or habits, please read on. My name is Gladys Wesley-Kennedy, Founder and Qi Gong Master of The Wellness & Healing Arts Institute (The WHAI) pronounced “the way”). At The WHAI we empower our clients to heal themselves of chronic pain, sickness, or disease by teaching the profound ancient philosophies and energy practices of: yoga, tai chi, qigong, and meditation. Most of our clients come to The WHAI, desperately seeking relief from chronic

24

Houston

ailments, pain syndromes—or worse— attempting to escape the untimely advances of the Grim Reaper. Most have, repeatedly, been failed by allopathic treatments and, as a last resort, come to us. They come, yearning for a miracle through unconventional therapies like qi gong or herbal therapies. During initial consultations, I am often dismayed by how woefully ignorant we Americans are about our particular health challenges. For example, most of us do not know the correct name of our illness, its cause, or our physician’s name. Often, we neither possess, nor have ever reviewed, our medical reports or records. Moreover, to treat our problems, we depend on and overconsume prescription drugs—for years—without knowing the dosage or why we’ve taken them so long. The reality is, as Americans, we have access to the world’s most advanced medical system, but are pushed through it like blind, deaf, and dumb mutes. Furthermore, it is a system that does not work—yet, we pay enormous sums of money to be failed by it! I was one such American.

www.NaturalAwakenings-Houston.com

While stricken with cancer, out of sheer fear and ignorance about other options, I ignorantly paid for numerous invasive surgeries, chemotherapy, radiation, and an array of prescription drugs because, I was told, “…it is the leading protocol of cancer care.” Hence, based on my intimate experience as a former patient of our American medical system, and subsequent years of operating a holistic health practice, I can make this informed declaration: “There is no reason for us Americans to continue to live with such ignorance or depend on a flawed medical system.” I survived cancer, not because of the efficacy of a cancer protocol, but rather because I found and healed the source of my ‘dis-ease,’ which was a habitually negative mindset. Until I found and rectified my out-ofcontrol mind, emotions, and habits, nothing and no one could heal me. This epiphany initially occurred while being treated by a qi gong master. During an intense qi gong energy healing session, I spontaneously recognized the disease patterns I had lived with and nearly died from. I realized that the expression of my physical disease was the outward reflection of my inner dis-ease. Thus, my revelation was, since my mind and lifestyle were cancerous, so were my cells. That was my cure! To live…I had to learn to live right! Hence, the good news: To reestablish good health and abundant life, we do not need to rely solely on people or things outside of us. When I became mindful of my thought patterns and honest about the persistent problems in my daily reality, I knew where the healing had to begin. I recognized that my mind was incessantly haunted by worries about the future, my diet was imbalanced, and my relationships were strained. I also worked too much, drank too much alcohol and coffee, and was habitually critical, judgmental, and extremely arrogant. Once I began to identify and correct these dis-ease patterns, I readily improved…and, I continue to. The secret of wellness and healing is to identify and correct the source of pain, sickness, or disease within. Simply speaking, the source within is: habitual, dis-eased thoughts and emotions. To find these, take stock of your thinking

,

patterns and daily reality. Face yourself and your life conditions—honestly. Identify aspects of your life that are out of balance and problematic. Also, stop focusing on your physical pain or diagnosis—they are merely indicators of a much deeper issue—the outward manifestation of inner disharmony. Everyone is born with an innate healing mechanism that is powerful beyond measure. Our bodies are constantly rebuilding and healing. This power is an inherent mechanism of our mind and physical body, and we can learn to master it. So, endeavor to identify disease patterns and, oneby-one, replace them with improved ways of thinking and living. Begin to live by exercising mindfulness of your thoughts, emotions, and actions—this is what it means to, live consciously and purposefully. Wellness is our birthright. The ability to heal ourselves and to create the life conditions that we want is our greatest gift and power! This article was written in response to an invitation from Natural Awakenings Magazine. They asked me to write several articles describing the basic

steps for establishing lasting well-being. This article serves as the introduction. Starting next month, there will be more articles that discuss actual case histories, and describe effective healing practices and methodologies. Some of the featured articles will include: “Transforming Disease Patterns into Healing Habits” and “Finding Your Way out of Mind Hell.” The mutual goal of Natural Awakenings and The WHAI is to empower readers to take the lead in their health and overall well-being. Therefore, we sincerely hope you will join us, each month, as we chronicle the way home along the ancient and time-honored path within. How Your Angels Help You Discover Your Soul Purpose by Kim O’Neill

A

re you aware that the secret to creating inner peace and happiness is directly linked to carrying out your spiritual destiny? Think of destiny in terms of a spiritual to-do list. You are currently living on the earthly plane to accomplish a very specific set of goals and objectives that you planned while you were still in heaven. Fulfilling your destiny is the reason you have been reborn on the earthly plane, and your entire quality of life hinges on how you pursue your spiritual objectives. The secret of creating a satisfying quality of life is twofold. It involves developing an awareness of your spiritual destiny, and the daily effort you put forth to achieve it. Life on the earthly plane is never

easy. No matter how far you’ve already navigated down your spiritual path, there are times when you’re likely to be overwhelmed by confusion about your true purpose, gripped by fear of failure, frustrated about the timing involved in what you’re trying to manifest, and continually dealing with difficult issues in your relationships with other people. And, of course, there is the ever-present change that is at the heart of the earthly experience. How you respond to all of the ongoing transition and challenge will dictate your day-to-day quality of life. How can you continually prevail over all of the distractions and concerns you face on a daily basis? How can you maintain faith in who you are and what

www.NaturalAwakenings-Houston.com

you are here on earth to achieve? How can you overcome all of the negativity, hopelessness, and resistance to change that confound so many of us at times? Your guardian angels are actual partners in helping you remember who you are, why you are here, and the timing in which you are meant to achieve all the dynamics of your destiny. The key to accessing all of the guidance and direction they can provide is to develop your ability to better hear and discern what they are trying to communicate… and trust in your ability to get it right. “Channeling” is the process of communication that takes place between spiritual beings existing in heaven and human beings existing on the earthly plane. All the residents of heaven, including God, the network of guardian angels, and your departed loved ones are spiritual beings. They regularly provide human beings with a wealth of intuitive insight designed to help pave the way for success and fulfillment. As you become more receptive to spiritual communication, you’ll discover that there are a great number of angels working with you to provide assistance and direction. During waking hours, your angels speak to you telepathically, providing intuitive information that sounds like a little voice inside your head, which you are very likely to interpret as your own thoughts. While you’re asleep, angels communicate with you in the form of dreams, which are meant to provide insight into your career, relationships, issues, health, safety, abundance, and even past-life experiences. Think for a moment about the dreams you’ve had that have been particularly memorable or repetitive. Along with recalling past-life experiences, your dreams bring clarity to what is happening currently in your life, and even furnish an awareness of what is to come in the future. It may also prove very comforting for departed friends and family members to maintain a relationship with you by making an appearance in your dreams, often to share some very necessary information that they feel will be spiritually or emotionally constructive. Guardian angels start an open dialog with us when we arrive on the earthly plane and continue to provide

unwavering support throughout our lives, even if we remain unaware of their existence or our inborn ability to communicate with them. If you practice your communication skills, you’ll quickly build a more cohesive and tangible relationship with them. Developing the ability to channel with your angels will dramatically improve your quality of life. The process of channeling is incredibly simple. While it may sound grandiose to communicate with heavenly beings, it is your birthright as a fullfledged member of the same community. Don’t forget that you, too, are a spiritual being, and live in heaven between each of your earthly lifetimes. You are only here on the earthly plane for a short spiritual pilgrimage to accomplish a number of very specific goals. You are a spiritual being yourself, and have guardian angels already assigned to work with you to assist in the accomplishment of your spiritual agenda. Your guardian angels have been providing intuitive information to you since you were an infant, and because this communication has already been occurring, there is no question about your ability to be able to do it.

You have already been channeling, since birth, whether you realize it or not. The ability to continue doing so will remain intact no matter how much you ignore or deny that the process is taking place. With just a little practice, you can develop communication skills that will allow you to have a two-way conversation with your guardian angels, or departed loved ones, whenever and wherever you wish. Imagine how lifechanging it would be to have immediate access to the wealth of information available from them—as well as from your soul’s memory bank—and how you could use those insights to build far greater success in your life. One of the biggest keys in developing your channeling ability is to get into the habit of spending time actually talking with them. Plan fifteen minutes once a week (or, even better, every morning!), to sit in front of your computer; or, if you’re old-school like me, you can assemble a notebook and pen to take notes. Make sure you’re in an environment where you won’t be disturbed. Next, it’s important to quiet your brain so what you hear will not be “head talk.” Simply ask your brain to put itself on “mute” and to become

only an observer to what is taking place. Take a few calming deep breaths. Then, ask your angels to start providing the guidance and information that is most important at that time. Or, you can begin your angelic briefing by asking questions. Listen to what pops into your mind and take notes so that you have a journal of your channeling efforts. Trust in what you “hear” or “know” or “sense.” The more you practice, the more confident you’ll become in your ability—and, the more receptive you’ll be to the wealth of angelic guidance available to you as you’re going about your daily routine. Together—with your angels—you can create the life you were born to live! The Hidden Deficiency Having the proper amount of iodine in our system at all times is critical to overall health, yet the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition finds that iodine deficiency is increasing drastically in light of an increasingly anemic national diet of unpronounceable additives and secret, unlabeled ingredients. This deficit now affects nearly three-quarters of the population.

Causes of Iodine Deficiency

Radiation

Almost everyone is routinely exposed to iodine-depleting radition

Low-Sodium Diets

Overuse of zero-nutrient salt substitutes in foods leads to iodine depletion

Iodized Table Salt

Iodized salt may slowly lose its iodine content by exposure to air

Bromine

A toxic chemical found in baked goods overrides iodine's ability to aid thyroid

Iodine-Depleted Soil Poor farming techniques have led to declined levels of iodine in soil

A Growing Epidemic Symptoms range from extreme fatigue and weight gain to depression, carpal tunnel syndrome, high blood pressure, fibrocystic breasts and skin and hair problems. This lack of essential iodine can also cause infertility, joint pain, heart disease and stroke. Low iodine levels also have been associated with breast and thyroid cancers; and in children, mental retardation, deafness, attention deficient and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and impaired growth, according to studies by Boston University and the French National Academy of Medicine.

What to Do The easy solution is taking the right kind of iodine in the right dosage to rebalance thyroid function and restore health to the whole body.

What is the “Point” of Acupuncture?

Traditional Chinese Medicine and High Blood Pressure by Jo Nell Norcini, L. Ac., M.A.O.M

A

blood pressure reading is one of the most basic diagnostic tools used in health care today. Every health care provider that you visit will use this screening tool. Your blood pressure (BP) readings are so important that you will even find these measuring devises, called sphygmomanometers, in drug stores and at pharmaceutical counters. But what exactly is blood pressure and what do these numbers represent? Blood pressure is the amount of pressure exerted by the blood against the walls of the arteries. The top number, called systolic, measures the amount of pressure against the arteries when the heart is contracted. The bottom number, called diastolic, measures the amount of pressure against the arteries when the heart is at rest.

Ninety percent of people who have high blood pressure (hypertension) have what is referred to as primary (or essential) hypertension. This means that there is no known cause or reason for this individual to have this condition. There are associated risk factors involved which include age, obesity, lack of exercise, alcohol, smoking, having too much salt in the diet, stress, ethnicity and family history. Hypertension does not have any associated symptoms and many people are completely unaware that they have this condition. That is why it is referred to as “the silent killer.” Those people who have BP readings outside of the normal range have increased risks for heart disease, stroke and kidney damage. If you find that your BP is elevated, there are steps you can take to help get your pressure back within the normal range. These steps include losing weight, exercising, reducing your salt intake, changing your eating habits, quitting smoking, reducing your alcohol intake, meditating and - you guessed it - getting acupuncture! Acupuncture has been proven to lower blood pressure. Studies show that acupuncture works by increasing the levels of nitric oxide in the blood. Nitric oxide helps the blood vessels to relax thereby increasing blood flow and reducing the pressure in the arteries. Acupuncture also helps to reset the autonomic nervous system to stop the vicious cycle that is caused by stress. If you are currently on medications to help control your blood pressure, acupuncture can help you to reduce your dosage and thereby help to reduce some of the side effects caused by taking these drugs. Please note that this process includes monitoring by your physician. You are not to reduce your dosage on your own! So if you are currently pre-hypertensive, think about acupuncture before getting on the pharmaceutical train. If you are already at stage 1 or stage 2, acupuncture treatments may help reduce your dependence on medication. Interview with Jaime Garcia of Sol Reflexology, Massage and Bodyworks. Part 2 By Mike Hart

This is part two of a two part interview I had with Jaime Garcia, owner of Sol Reflexology, Massage and Bodyworks. If you missed part one last month, you can read it online at our website naturalwakenings-houston.com What is reflexology and what can it do for a client? Reflexology is very simply the reflex points of one part of the body to another part of the body. For example, there are currently four known reflexology areas: the hands, feet, face, and ears. Hands and face get very quick results due to the proximity to the brain, but the effects are not as long lasting as the hands and feet. Reflexology can do things similar to what massage therapy can do for you. The advantage of reflexology is that if you have severe issues with your shoulders and it hurts SO bad no one can touch you. We can get to the shoulders through reflexology without having to touch your shoulders directly. Another advantage is some folks really enjoy their hands or feet worked on instead of their problem area. They don’t have to remove their clothes and can sit in a comfortable recliner. Besides all that, reflexology is that it is generally less expensive than massage therapy. I’ve had some great $20 foot rubs where the person started on my head and neck while my feet were soaking. How is reflexology different from that? A foot rub or a foot massage is exactly that, someone massaging your feet. It may or may not be painful to the client and may or may not leave the client feeling more relaxed. In addition, oils 30

Houston

or lotions are used during the session. In reflexology, there are no oils or lotions and there is no massage or foot rub of any kind. We also don’t touch any other part of your body. It is not necessary if reflexology is being utilized. We focus on points on the foot or hands with points that activate the part of the body that is associated with that part of the hand or foot. Think of reflexology points as nerve plexus that are connected to the different areas of your body that pretty much slap that part of the body and say, “Wake up! And get to work! There is something not right here!” Another big difference between reflexology and a foot rub is the price. I used to charge $100 for an hour of reflexology, but had to bring the price down just to be able to compete with other locations claiming they do reflexology. I’m actually thinking of raising my prices just to show folks we are different. Don’t get me wrong, there are some places that actually do reflexology, but they are far and few inbetween. If you find one that charges $20 and is truly reflexology, you got yourself a major bargain. Other than just making you feel relaxed, what can the various forms of massage you offer do for a client? Therapy is what we focus on; relaxation is just a byproduct if done properly. It

www.NaturalAwakenings-Houston.com

doesn’t matter if your issues is due to life changing experiences that either emotional or physical, or you have decided to follow the path of wellness and need assistance in getting there, emotionally or physically as well. The relaxation may happen during your session or after, but I can tell you that most of our clients feel the effects for more than a few hours, in most cases, several days after. Lymphatic Drainage Therapy, or LDT, is my specialty and allows me to work on so many different types of conditions and the best part of this modality, there is no pain whatsoever. In short, the lymphatic system is the sanitation department of your body. Cleaning your body out due to emotional or physical traumas, LDT is the way to go. It is not light Swedish, it is manual therapy and even if someone is not experienced in receiving massages, they will see the differences immediately. I feel so strongly about LDT, I believe every therapist should increase their skill in this field and there are not enough of us to go around. LDT allows us to work on cancer patients, pre and post op patients, breast augmentation or reduction, liver issues, allergy issues, neurological issues, auto-immune issues, heart diseases, strokes, diabetes, clinical depression, cognitive dysfunctions, and many more. Now, for folks that don’t mind the pressure, there is Shiatsu. Shiatus means finger pressure in Japanese but the techniques can be superior to deep tissue, sports, and other intense types of modalities due to working with meridian lines of the body at different levels of pressure for the fascia tissues; that is superficial, deep, or visceral. Most of the time, Shiatsu many conditions that acupuncture works with too, but without the use of needles. However, folks with accidental injuries (work or non-work related), martial arts, and sports related issues from sports enthusiast; tend to seek out Shiatsu as their method of choice for their condition. We do add Aromatherapy in most of our work when appropriate, but other modalities we offer are Ancient Thai Massage, Pre and Postnatal Massage, Cupping, Sports, Acu-Kineseiology, Reflexology, and of course, Swedish.

Why is it important that the massage therapist be licensed and insured? The importance of seeking out licensed massage therapist, or LMT, was implemented by the government to protect its citizens. We must undergo special training and education and pass an examination that tells you that at least we are at a certain level and not some Joe Shmo off the streets that has little knowledge or training of the human body. We must undergo classes in Anatomy, Physiology, Pathology, Business, and massage therapy techniques. Granted there are a few gifted individuals that don’t require any education to work on others, but how many do you know? In addition, if the licensed massage therapist is insured, they will be protecting you if any harm comes to you due to mal practice or whatsoever. Note that being licensed does not mean they are insured, so be sure to ask for proof. Why is that important? The same points that we use to help you may hurt you too if done incorrectly or carelessly. If the therapist is not licensed and they hurt you, do to a mistake, what good is taken them to court if they don’t have the funds to pay for those expensive medical bills? Believe me, most therapists are not wealthy and are barely making it. Just like most teachers, most massage therapist picked massage therapy more for the love of helping others than for the money.

know it as your sixth sense or heart will never let you down. In most cases, I tell everyone that if within 3 visits you don’t see a change or improvement in your well-being, try someone else. I’m talking about all types of therapy. The therapist and client combination is key to your wellbeing and Eastern medical practices don’t thrive on you being ill. Even at Sol Reflexology Massage & Bodyworks, I let everyone know that if I’m not the therapist for you, I’ll help you find ‘em. The second advice I will give is it doesn’t

matter what path of wellness you take or who you go with, Easter or Western. That decision has to come from within, so follow your gut, sixth sense, your heart, or whatever you wish to call it. That is your spirit within speaking to you. It is always trying to speak to us, we just don’t always listen. Keep your heart and mind open my friends, always. Namaste. The Adventure of Couchsurfing Stay with Locals and Make New Friends by Lisa Rosinky

D

aniel Sperry, a “couchsurfer” in his late 50s, decided a few years ago to quit his day job and make a living by performing cello music and reciting poetry in living rooms across the country. “I didn’t know it would become a catalyst for bringing communities of local people together,” he says, but his first gig, a “little shotgun shack” in Elko, Nevada, became more than a once in a lifetime experience. Years later, his Elko host remains a close friend and hosts a regular (and lucrative) stop on his crosscountry tours. Not only does creating connections with strangers make us happier—as University of Chicago social scientists have proven—it leads to fun travel stories. If we

choose to see the world via the decadeold organization at Couchsurfing.com, we might find ourselves sleeping on a sailboat in the Irish Sea; meeting backpackers by solar-powered light in a cave in Petra, Jordan; sharing a room with a pet bird that falls asleep listening to sappy love songs on the radio; or jamming to old-time banjo and fiddle tunes in a North Carolina kitchen. Th e g l o b a l c o m m u n i t y o f couchsurfers, now 10 million strong, considers strangers “friends you haven’t met yet.” They currently are hosting and organizing more than half-a-million events in more than 200,000 cities worldwide this year. The aim is to make travel easier and more affordable, build

people’s faith and trust in one another and create meaningful connections across cultures. It’s easy to become a member by creating a profile as a host and/or a traveler, which includes verified identification. Guests don’t need to reciprocate by hosting or leaving gifts, although lasting friendships are a common result. Hosts and guests are encouraged to leave honest reviews for each other, which helps ensure ongoing safety and good behavior all around. Meanwhile, non-members also are welcome to explore couchsurfing events in their city. Fun opportunities to make new connections include weekly language exchanges, skill swaps, outdoor activities and potlucks. “For me, it’s undeniably about the community, the kind of person it tends to attract,” says Joseph Abrahamson, a couchsurfer in his mid-20s. “A room full of couchsurfers is full of stories and listening and sharing and trust. It changes a person in a positive way… people that travel like this for long enough can no longer survive with closed minds.” Lisa Rosinky is a freelance writer in Boston.

EYE HEALTH FOR DOGS 10 Foods to Keep Canine Vision Sharp by Audi Donamor

K

ey colorful foods, packed with nutrients, protect against eye problems ranging from progressive retinal atrophy and uveitis to cataracts and glaucoma. Here are 10 foods that are highly regarded in helping prevent and defend against vision problems. Their eyeworthy nutrients include anthocyanins, beta-carotene, carotenoids, glutathione, lycopene, omega-3 essential fatty acids, phytonutrients—and the special partnership of lutein and zeaxanthin, sometimes referred to as “sunscreen for the eyes”. An easy way to serve these powerpacked foods is as a mash. Simply combine a few cups of fruits and vegetables in a food processor with a

half-cup of filtered water and blend as a raw pet meal topper. For a cooked topper, chop the fruits and vegetables and place in a medium sized sauce pan with the filtered water and a couple tablespoons of first-pressed olive oil. Simmer gently, cool and serve. Maybe top it all off with a fish or egg. Blueberries contain two eye-healthy carotenoids: lutein and zeaxanthin. They also deliver anthocyanins, eyenourishing phytonutrients known to support night vision, according to a study published in the Journal of Biomedicine and Biotechnology. University of Oklahoma research suggests that flavonoids like the rutin,

www.NaturalAwakenings-Houston.com

resveratrol and quercetin in blueberries may help prevent retinal atrophy. Their selenium and zinc components also support vision, according to a study from the National Eye Institute. Eating blueberries has even been associated with the reduction of eye fatigue, according to The Journal of Agriculture and Food Chemistry. Broccoli’s anti-cancer benefits are well known, but it’s also recognized as one of the best vegetables for eye health. A good source of lutein and zeaxanthin, it’s also packed with beta-carotene. Don’t leave the leaves behind, because they contain even more beta-carotene than the stems and florets. Researchers at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine have found that broccoli and broccoli sprouts protect the retina from free radical damage, which may be due to a compound called sulphoraphane that boosts the body’s defense against free radicals. Carrots come in 100 varieties, from deep purple and white to brilliant orange. Each is a storehouse of nutrient power, providing vitamin A, betacarotene, vitamins C, D, E and K, and riboflavin, niacin, calcium, potassium, phosphorus, sodium, iron, magnesium, manganese, sulphur, copper and iodine. The adage that carrots are good for the eyes is true. They even contain lycopene and lutein, phytonutrients that protect

from UVB radiation and free radical damage. Cold-water fish such as salmon, tuna, cod, haddock and sardines are rich in omega-3s, especially EPA and DHA, which are widely known to be important to cellular health. DHA makes up 30 percent of the fatty acids that comprise the retina. The particularly high levels of omega-3s in sardines add further protection to retinal health, according to researchers at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. Eggs are rich in cysteine and sulphur, two components of glutathione. Cataract Health News reports that sulphurcontaining compounds have been found to protect eyes from cataract formation. Egg yolks contain lutein, and a University of Massachusetts study has found that eating an egg a day raised levels of lutein and zeaxanthin in the blood; at the same time, blood serum lipids and lipoprotein cholesterol concentrations remained stable. Garlic. Researchers at the University of Oregon suggest that sulphur-rich garlic is important for the production of glutathione, a protein that acts as an antioxidant for the eye’s lens, and can be instrumental in the prevention of some visual problems. Kale is an excellent source of lutein and zeaxanthin. The American Optometric Association says these special antioxidants act like “internal sunglasses.” Add beta-carotene to the mix and kale serves as a preferred foil to oxidative stress. Sweet potatoes are loaded with both beta-carotene and anthocyanins, the latter high in antioxidant and antiinflammatory properties. Tomatoes are famous for their

lycopene, a carotenoid and phytonutrient found in red produce. This powerful antioxidant helps protect against sun damage and retinal degeneration and has been well documented as effective in cancer prevention. Processed tomato products contain higher levels of lycopene than the raw fruit.
