reetings, Well, here we are in late summer, Houston! People are taking their last vacation or day trip of the summer before school starts and rushing around making all those purchase to get ready for the start of school. Instead of the usual back-to-school theme, this month’s theme is empowering youth. Empowering goes beyond teaching or training youth, important as they are. To empower someone, you encourage and allow them to make decisions and enjoy or suffer the consequences. It’s hard to turn loose of the control, the decision making and trust that youth can choose wisely but how else will they ever learn. Empowering also goes beyond the individual child or teen. It implies collective or group action. Leading others is how youth learns to lead and to follow. As you look for things for your youth to do with the last weeks of their summer vacation and even going into the busy school year, look for activities and groups that promote empowerment. This month’s feature article should give you some ideas. We at Natural Awakenings Houston are still an eco-friendly recycled newsprint paper magazine but we are exploring the cutting edge of the digital frontier as well. Check out our new mobile receptive website. Subscribe to our digital magazine so fewer trees need to be killed. Like us on FaceBook and follow us on Twitter for the latest updates. And… empower that tech savvy youth in your family to help you learn to use our new Aurasma app. We are the first magazine in Texas and the first Natural Awakenings magazine in the country to embed video in both our print and digital magazines. Folks, this is so amazing! This little magazine is now cutting edge digital as well. This is only the beginning. The best is still yet to come. Spread the word. Share it with your friends. We are the go-to place for all things sustainable living, health and fitness in the Houston Metro.

Overcoming Adversity: The Elizabeth Smart Story

The abduction of Elizabeth Smart was one of the most followed child abduction cases of our time. At the tender age of 14, just before celebrating her middle school graduation, Elizabeth went to sleep in her family home just as she had always done. Awakened hours later to a knife held roughly against her throat, she was taken from her home and family and held captive for nine long months.

Houston’s First Salt Spa

H

ouston’s first salt spa is open in Sugar Land offering all natural treatments for those suffering from seasonal allergies, chronic upper respiratory conditions, sinusitis, and cystic fibrosis. The spa has three salt rooms: an adult’s only room for quiet and relaxation, a private room for families, small groups, or massage therapy, and a kid’s room filled with fun toys and activities. At Salt of the Earth Spa, pharmaceutical grade sodium chloride is pumped into the air allowing the anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties of salt to go deep into the respiratory system helping to loosen and drain mucus and phlegm naturally. No change of clothes is necessary. One can bring magazines or enjoy spending quality time with friends and/or family during their 45 minute session. “We are truly excited to bring halotherapy to Houstonians,” says co-owner Sandy Hinderliter. Sandy’s husband, Mark, suffers from chronic respiratory issues and they travelled to Dallas and Austin for salt treatments. After Mark’s positive experiences, Mark and Sandy decided to bring halotherapy to Houston to help others with respiratory issues. Sandy will manage the day-to-day operations. She is also a certified Emotion Code and Body Code practitioner and a certified life coach. A single 45 minute session for adults costs $50 and $35 for children under 13. The spa offers several affordable membership packages and treatment options. healthbriefs Infant Gut Bacteria May Be Associated with Food Sensitivity by Dr. Bobbie Stowe, DC he vast majority of my patients come to me with one common complaint: dysbiosis of the GI system (a diseased gut). Generally speaking, their microbiome, the “good” bacteria in their gut, is dysfunctional. You see, 70% to 80% of your immune system comes from this “good” bacteria, and if those bacteria are destroyed or diseased, then illnesses manifest. A study in the journal of the Clinical & Experimental Allergy notes that infants with a bacterial gut imbalance have a much higher risk for food sensitivities, especially to foods like eggs, milk and peanuts. In general, these infants are missing two specific “good” bacteria strains that help protect and defend against food sensitivities.

T

Breastfed Babies Have Fewer Colds and Ear Infections

A

study from the University of Texas has found that increased breastfeeding decreases ear infections among nursing children. The researchers followed 367 babies between 1 and 12 months old from 2008 through 2014. Th e s c i e n t i s t s a n a l y z e d family history traits of smoking, ear infections, breastfeeding and formula feeding. Nose and throat mucosal samples were taken throughout the study period to identify infections, and parents informed the researchers whenever the baby experienced an infection. The study was led by Dr. Tasnee Chonmaitree, a pediatrics professor from the University o f Te x a s M e d i c a l B r a n ch a t Galveston. “We clearly showed that frequent upper respiratory infections, carriage of bacteria in the nose and lack of breastfeeding are major risk factors for ear infections,” he states. “Prolonged breastfeeding was associated with significant reductions in both colds and ear infections, a common complication of colds.”

Why are some infants susceptible to food sensitivities? Researchers can only guess right now, but the leading causes are thought to be Cesarean delivery and the increased use of formulas, instead of breast milk. Vaginal deliveries plus breast feedings combine to provide the very first defense mechanisms that infants need to start the development of their own immune systems. For more information, please see Dr. Stowe’s ad, page 2.

Legumes Facilitate Weight Loss

A

review of 21 clinical trials has found that just one daily serving of legumes can facilitate an average drop of three-quarters of a pound over a six-week period. Published in the journal Obesity, the research analyzed results from studies that tested a total of 940 men and women eating about three-quarters of a cup of beans, lentils, chickpeas and other legumes each day. The subjects reported feeling nearly one-third fuller on average after eating about 5.6 ounces of these foods with their meals, compared with a control group’s diet. These beneficial legumes may also reduce body fat percentages. According to senior study author and physician John Sievenpiper, Ph.D., of St. Michael’s Hospital’s Clinical Nutrition and Risk Factor Modification Center and the University of Toronto, “Ninety percent of weight-loss diets fail, resulting in weight regain, which may be due in part to hunger and food cravings. Knowing which foods make people feel fuller longer may help them lose weight and keep it off.”

Aromatherapy Soothes Allergies

R

esearch from Korea’s Chung-Ang University has found that inhaling aromatherapy infusions comprising a combination of sandalwood, frankincense and ravensara for five minutes twice daily significantly reduces symptoms of allergies after seven days. The researchers tested 54 men and women, half of which were tested using a placebo of almond oil. Total nasal symptom score (TNSS) and rhinoconjunctivitis quality of life questionnaire (RQLQ) results were both significantly lower in the aromatherapy group. TNSS scores decreased by more than half and RQLQ scores decreased by more than 60 percent. Scores for fatigue and sleep quality also improved in the aromatherapy group. “These findings indicate that inhalation of certain aromatherapy oils help relieve perennial allergic rhinitis symptoms, improve rhinitis-specific quality of life and reduce fatigue in patients with perennial allergic rhinitis,” ChungAng University’s Seo Yeon Choi and Kyungsook Park explain in their paper.

While Ringling will retain the services of tigers, lions, leopards, horses, camels, dogs and kangaroos, the Mexican Congress has voted to prohibit exotic animals under big tops across their country. That means no more tigers jumping through hoops, elephants used as props or monkeys dressed in tiny outfits. The bill requires circuses to report the wildlife they own, which would then be made available to interested zoos. Source: The New York Times

Sikkim Now a Wholly Organic State Sikkim, the northeastern Indian state located between Bhutan and Nepal, has rid its agricultural land of pesticides, fertilizers, genetically modified crops and other artificial inputs on around 75,000 hectares, or about 300 square miles, of agricultural land, making it its country’s first organic state. Instead, farmers use natural alternatives such as green manure and compost. Twelve years ago, the Pawan Chamling-led government decided to make Sikkim an organic farming state through a declaration in the legislative assembly. After the entry of chemical inputs for farmland was restricted and their sale banned, farmers had no option but to go organic. Source: TheHindu.com

Good Reads

LOL TX

The love of books may begin at any age, but for most, it starts in childhood. Now, scientists are studying the effects of reading on the brain with MRIs, polls, surveys and experiments. The results indicate that readers of fiction are more empathetic toward others. By engaging with a story, they are temporarily placing themselves in a character’s shoes, thus fostering empathy in real life, and literary reading amplifies this effect. According to a Stanford University study, reading a challenging book also helps us become smarter, as well as more empathetic. By attempting to tackle harder books, we create new connections in our minds that we might not have done otherwise. Neuroscientist Bob Dougherty remarks, “The right patterns of ink on a page can create vivid mental imagery and instill powerful emotions.” David Comer Kidd, author of another related study, observes, “Like opening a window to let fresh air into our home, literature opens up our minds to the myriad ideas that we wouldn’t be able to experience on our own. We can pause to analyze the experiences depicted as if they were our own, expanding our experience of the world.”

Despite being less confident than their elders, a new study by PsychTests.com, in Montreal, reveals that Millennials (those born between 1980 and 2000) are an ambitious and tenacious generation that continues to prove potential critics wrong. Labeled by some as self-entitled, arrogant and immature from being coddled by hovering parents, the company’s research says that Millennials are not afraid to push themselves to achieve lofty goals, work hard or take on difficult challenges. Collecting data from 1,035 people that took their Ambition Test, the researchers looked at the differences between Millennials, Generation X (born between 1960 and 1980) and Baby Boomers (born between 1946 and 1960) in terms of their levels of aspiration, persistence and sense of selfefficacy. The study reveals that while Millennials lagged a little behind the other two generations on some factors related to ambition, the potential of these young adults should not be underestimated. “One can argue that Millennials’ hopeful and determined nature is a case of idealism,” explains Ilona Jerabek, Ph.D., president of PsychTests. “Some have just started out in the workforce, so they’re eager to prove themselves, which could also mean that at some point they’ll be blindsided by the reality of what it’s like to be out there in the real world.”

LIFE IN THE FOREGROUND Present Moment Awareness, A Choice For Self-Liberation by Lin Weiss, MH

I

n the 1970’s and 80’s, life in the fast lane was a popular response to one’s commentary about the busyness of day-to-day life. LOL! I laugh out loud when I think of our current pace relative to those days. We are in such a hurry we create acronyms for common phrases that are quickly making their way into unabridged dictionaries, online. Technology speeds ahead with new

18

Houston

revelations in each moment. Information of current events on the other side of the planet is immediately dispatched to us via internet, iPhones, iPads, iPods and satellite news options on television and our car radios. It is difficult to find a dining establishment without a television flashing the latest sensational news through live video streams, and just in case that is not enough, trailers

www.NaturalAwakenings-Houston.com

of concurrent dramas scroll across the bottom of the screen. Why are we so addicted to the information highway? I have a lot of questions regarding the epic speed at which information now travels. Are we more time-efficient because of it? Do we have more time for our loved ones? For peace and tranquility? Are we more secure about our lives and our futures? Does this information breed contentment or paralyzing fear (False Evidence Appearing Real)? As I seek refuge in my personal practices of meditation and yoga, I am very aware of the contrast of chaos and peace that coexist at my whim. I become aware that what I choose to focus on becomes the immediate reality of my life. When I intentionally connect to the beauty of nature, what is growing and alive, my emotions, my relationships, my hopes and my livelihood all reflect a quality of aliveness and vitality. Conversely when I watch random streams of tragic news over the dinner table, I become agitated, fearful and do not digest the goodness of my food or my life. This agitated state affects those around me, my ability to sleep well and make good choices. It is, however, a choice. Where I will dine, what I will eat and whom I will dine with is all within my personal power to choose. Moment by moment I am creating my experience of reality. The question is: Am I willing to, consciously, create a peaceful and nurturing environment for myself? I am. It can be challenging to create a sacred space for myself each day. If I am contemplating busyness/lack of time, or giving my thoughts to corporate m a n d a t e s , g ove r n m e n t c o n t r o l , healthcare regulations or Armageddon, it is difficult to be happy, peaceful and content with my life. No wonder millions of Americans seek refuge in anti-depressant drugs, which serve to further stupefy and weaken our compromised perspectives of health, joy and abundance. But the television says they cure depression. What about the disclaimers at the end of the ads? In some cases suicide and fatality? Is this an acceptable chance we are willing to take with our beautiful lives? Are we listening? Is there some epidemic, hypnotic denial of personal power in this media milieu of mediocrity? How can this be ok?

Believe nothing, No matter where you read it, Not even if I have said it, Unless it agrees with your own reason and your own common sense. -The Buddha As I choose to really work at living in the present moment I notice some distinct benefits. I feel the power of my own breath enlivening every cell of my body. I look forward to my life, even doing the dishes or laundry. There is a gratitude for my life that arises from noticing what is wonderful, good and sound in this present moment. A warm summer

breeze kisses my skin, leaves rustle in the breeze and the hum of cicadas lulls me with a comforting familiarity reminiscent of carefree childhood days. Sure all the other stuff is still going on as the world turns. There has always been strife and struggle. It is empowering however to consider that the Armageddon is of the mind. I have the power to choose my own reality. And, in this moment‌ I am willing. There are no Truths‌ Just our interpretation of the world. -Friedrich Neitche

BRINGING HOPE TO PATIENTS WITH A TERMINAL DIAGNOSIS by Wendy Nadherny

The use of the word “terminal” limits one’s mindset, while the word “curable” opens up a world of possibility.

B

rain tumors are the most common cancers among children, according t h e A m e r i c a n B r a i n Tu m o r Association, which estimates more than 4,600 individuals between the ages of 0-19 will be diagnosed with a primary brain tumor this year. The most serious form of pediatric brain cancer is diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG), a rare and aggressive tumor found each year in about 300 children, especially in those ages 5-7. As of 2015, the median survival for children with DIPG is less than one year from diagnosis. Because DIPG occurs in the brain stem, it is inoperable and unable to be treated with chemotherapy. The standard recommendation of a six-week radiation regimen can shrink the tumor to extend life expectancy a couple more months. While conventional oncologists consider certain brain cancers to be terminal, hope lies in venturing outside the box of conventional thinking. This includes researching and evaluating U.S.-based and foreign-based clinical

20

Houston

trials using experimental approaches to treat primary cancers and recurrent cancers with immunotherapy or genetargeted therapy. In April 2016, three interesting FDA-approved clinical trials were open to DIPG patients. One of these was offered by the Burzynski Clinic in Houston, TX. This clinical trial was the only one offered to patients who had declined the standard recommendation of radiation and/or tissue brain biopsy. The trial protocol was designed to test non-toxic antineoplaston (ANP) peptide therapy, which had been used in previous trials to treat DIPG and glioblastoma (GBM) brains with some level of prior success and indicating that DIPG and GBM are in fact “curable.” The manufacturing and research for ANPs is sponsored by the Burzynski Research Institute (BRI), a publicly-owned biopharmaceutical company working to develop and deliver cancer therapies based on genomic and epigenomic principles. In 1967, Stanislav Burzynski, MD, identified naturally occurring

www.NaturalAwakenings-Houston.com

human peptides, which were present in healthy patients and deficient in cancer patients. He concluded that these peptides played a role in preventing the growth of cancer cells. With a PhD in Chemistry, Dr. Burzynski was able to reproduce the peptides synthetically, and he named them antineoplastons. ANP therapy targets over 100 genes that affect tumor cells. ANPs switch off certain genes that cause cancer, called oncogenes, activate the genes that fight cancer, called tumor suppressor genes, and pose no harm to healthy cells. The most common side effects of the ANP drugs are symptoms resulting from electrolyte imbalances – a higher than normal range levels of sodium and lower than normal range levels of potassium. These symptoms can be managed through regular blood analysis, dietary intake, higher water consumption, and potassium supplementation. Neil Fachon, 19, an engineering student at Northeastern University in Boston was diagnosed with DIPG at Massachusetts General Hospital on March 3, 2016, and became the first patient to enroll in the new ANP clinical trial that opened on April 12, 2016. On April 20, after passing baseline tests, a vascular access catheter was surgically implanted below Neil’s collar bone, and on April 21 he began receiving ANP infusions through a portable pump. That same day, however, the FDA placed a hold on the trial it had given prior approval. Committed to his chosen course of treatment and deeming the FDA objections to be unreasonable, Neil took legal action, through federal court in his home state of Rhode Island, to overturn an FDA decision that failed to acknowledge his rights. On May 17, Neil won a temporary restraining order that was later negotiated into a permanent injunction, and he had sound reasons for wanting to pursue this treatment. DIPG survivor Jessica Ressel, who received her diagnosis in March 1996 at age 11, was successfully treated by Dr. Burzynski. Now married and a mother of two, she is one of three long-term DIPG survivors who keep in touch with Neil and provide encouragement. All three of these survivors were treated with ANP therapy at the Burzynski Clinic While seeking to assure his own survival,

Neil also wanted to play a role in some promising scientific cancer research. Presently Neil is a trial of one, however, he hopes the FDA will remove the hold or that Right to Try legislation will be passed to allow other DIPG patients to join him and have a chance at life. Right to Try legislation gives terminally ill patients the right to try investigational medicines that have not yet received full FDA approval. According to the Right to Try website: “Over one million Americans die from a terminal illness every year. Many spend years searching for a potential cure, or struggle in vain to get accepted into a clinical trial. Unfortunately, FDA red tape and government regulations restrict access to promising new treatments, and for those who do get access, it’s often too late.” The FDA drug approval process can take up to 15 years. This is far too long for dying patients to wait, because terminal time lines are measured in months and weeks. Many potentially life-saving treatments awaiting approval in the U.S. are already available overseas, and have been for years, yet most Americans

cannot afford to seek treatment abroad. A Right to Try law gives hope back to those who have lost it. It is not just for children diagnosed with DIPG, but for anyone with a terminal illness hoping to get life-saving treatment before it’s too late. Right to Try is already law in 30 states, including Texas, and under consideration in 16 more, including Rhode Island. On May 10, 2016, the Trickett Wendler Right to Try Act of 2016 (S. 2912) was introduced in the United States Senate: “This bill bars the federal government from prohibiting or restricting the production, manufacture, distribution, prescribing, or dispensing of an experimental drug, biological

natural awakenings

product, or device that is: (1) intended to treat a patient who has been diagnosed with a terminal illness; and (2) authorized by, and in accordance with, state law. The federal government may not restrict the possession or use of such a treatment by a patient certified by a physician as having exhausted all other treatment options.” People can help move this legislation forward by contacting their senators and representatives. Neil hopes the sharing of his story will raise awareness about treatment options for brain cancer and about a terminally diagnosed patient’s right to choose. People can help move Right to Try legislation forward by contacting their senators and representatives. Wendy Nadherny Fachon is a health educator, a writer for Rhode Island Natural Awakenings magazine, and Neil’s mother. She can provide helpful information to parents of children diagnosed with brain cancer, if they contact her at wendy@netwalkri.com or through facebook. Learn more at RightToTry.org. The Power that Keeps Us Going by Carrie Harmon

A

fter hopping on the health train, you are now exercising more than ever and you are consistently watching out for what you consume. You are also making sure that your body is fueled and nourished properly with food, vitamins and minerals. You maintain a healthy lifestyle, because your health and well-being is important to you. It is not something you are dedicated to do because you are obsessed with following the latest health trend, but because it is something about this lifestyle that allows for you to feel energized, happy and alive. A burst of energy embraces your whole body and allows you to live life

to the fullest without feeling drained or distressed. Do you ever worry that you might stop seeing and feeling the results of a healthy lifestyle after you age? As we get older, our energy level decreases and it becomes harder to take control of our body as well as preserve youthful health. We only have 24 hours in a day to do it all, so our bodies demand a significant amount of energy. You might think that you are doing everything right, but you could actually be doing a little bit more about your health and energy level. Are you wondering what it is that your daily routine is missing in order to

achieve complete physical and mental wellness? Everyone could use a little more power and some people might turn to power napping to help them recharge after a hectic morning. Additional sleeping time will not increase your energy level or productivity, and eating right while exercising can only do so much. You should pay close attention to the little thing such as enzymes, which are proteins that speed up chemical reactions and power our entire body. Living in our body are about 75,000 enzymes that help our body function. Enzymes can also be found in all living organisms including animals and plants. As humans, it is important to have adequate enzymes to digest our food. Other functions for enzymes include reducing inflammation, cleaning the body, modulating the immune system and fighting viruses. Enzymes and its power to digest food are required to maintain an energetic and healthy lifestyle. “You cannot be in good health if your digestive system is not functioning properly.” As we age, enzymes production decreases and it can lead to a variety of digestive discomforts, including occasional gas, bloating, indigestion and irregularity. It is never too early to start replenishing your enzymes. The more you replenish your enzymes reserve, the easier it is to gain energy and maintain a beautiful and healthy body. “With every meal, I recommend to take a capsule of Digest Gold, an advanced formula designed to support digestion. We recommend this to all of our guests at Deer Lake Lodge & Spa.” It is important for our bodies to absorb all the nutrients from the food that we consume and convert it to energy. Enzymes have the power to keep us going. Carrie Harmon is the Spa Director at Deer Lake Lodge & Spa, a health resort that promotes enhanced living through holistic cleansing and other therapeutic practices in a relaxing, secluded environment. Deer Lake Lodge & Spa aspires to improve guests’ health in an environment where they can enjoy a multi-faceted cleansing program in a rustic-chic resort atmosphere, located on a 50-acre rustic-chic oasis in Montgomery, T X . w w w. ccording to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, as many as 50 million Americans are affected by seasonal or year-round nasal allergies. Additionally, 56 million suffer from eczema, psoriasis or rosacea. Prescriptions and over-the-counter drugs may help, but aren’t a cure. Salt therapy can be a gentler, all-natural solution for easing associated symptoms. While eating too much salt is bad for the body, breathing it is a healthy activity. The Greek word for salt is halos, and halotherapy provides a welcome alternative to conventional pills, sprays and injections. In the mid-1800s, after salt mine workers in Poland were found to have a low rate of respiratory illness, the Wieliczka Salt Mine Health Spa was

That pioneering facility is still in operation. “In the beginning, I think salt therapy was seen as a time-consuming novelty. Now, holistically minded people are more supportive,” says Clay Juracsik, owner of the St. Louis Salt Room, in Maplewood, Missouri. The room’s walls are covered in salt, with blocks of backlit Himalayan pink salt at floor level. Clients wear disposable booties to walk through inches-deep, loose, mineral-rich Dead Sea salt to reclining chairs. Another option comprises a sound bath, during which crystal bowl music creates a vibration similar to piano notes to quiet and focus the mind during a salt session.” Salt treatments can be experienced regularly, seasonally or as needed. For those free of respiratory issues, a salt room visit provides a refreshing way to relax, sit, chill and breathe. Patrick views it as a form of stress management to increase well-being. GROWING UP EMPOWERED Helping Kids Step into Their Best Selves by Judith Fertig

T

he plugged-in, stressed-out world that challenges adults can be even more difficult for teens in the throes of hormones, peer pressure and a selfie culture. Parents can help their children thrive and become empowered individuals by nurturing desirable character traits such as resourcefulness, resilience, perseverance, self-reliance, independence, empathy and social competence. Child psychologist Michele Borba, Ed.D., of Palm Springs, California, is a former classroom teacher and the mother of three grown children who dispenses advice at MicheleBorba.com/blog. Her main parenting focus is character education, as reflected in her latest book, Unselfie: Why Empathetic Kids Succeed in Our All-About-Me World. “Tune in to what your kids love,” advises Borba. “Then find learning experiences that help them develop traits they need to be happy, productive adults.”

26

Houston

This positive parenting approach— accentuating youthful desires and strengths, instead of deficiencies and weaknesses—helps young people develop a secure footing in life. “Kids are driven by their hearts,” observes Borba. “A positive parent doesn’t do the cookie-cutter approach, as in, ‘That’s what worked for other kids in the neighborhood,’ nor even reference what the parent did as a teen.” Teens also impose upon themselves, thinking that being trendy, beautiful, rich and famous are valuable life goals. “The positive parent looks at each child as an individual, listens to what really makes them light up, and then supports that.”

Dreaming Big

Landmark Worldwide, active in 125 cities globally, is committed to the idea that people everywhere have the possibility of achieving success,

www.NaturalAwakenings-Houston.com

fulfillment and greatness. Corporate leaders praise its programs for helping participants relate, communicate and perform well. Josselyne Herman-Saccio, a Landmark program leader in New York City, remarks, “Every one of us has a dream, yet too many of us choose our path with fear, disguised as practicality. Our kids might get the message that, ‘You don’t do your dream as your career.’” That thought can leave anyone feeling like something is missing. After putting off her own career as a singer and ultimately deciding to go for it, Herman-Saccio recorded That’s What Love Can Do with her group Boy Krazy. The song rose to the top of the pop charts in 1993. That empowering experience helped her decide to help others— including her own three children—fulfill their dreams. Today, Herman-Saccio leads the Landmark Forum for adults, and the company also offers a version of the course for 13-to-17-year-olds, an interactive, three-day program in cities across the U.S. It helps teens first understand their existing patterns of thoughts and behaviors and then move forward to create new possibilities and face new challenges and discover a new level of power, freedom, self-expression and peace of mind. For a teen to register, a parent or legal guardian must register for or have completed the organization’s adult forum and provide permission. Teens planning for life after high school get help identifying their career passion at schools such as Upland Hills School, in Oxford, Michigan. Its emphasis on experiential learning culminates in a senior project the teen produces, whether it’s writing a novel, building a storage shed or volunteering at the local senior citizen center. Each must someway contribute to the community. Beginning with the student’s dream, they must work their way through obstacles, setbacks and all the steps required to bring a dream to reality.

Emotional Literacy/Healthy Risk-Taking

Sometimes parents need to address a teen’s longing for friends and social connections. For youths that especially need to nurture their social skills, such

as high-functioning kids with autism or Asperger’s syndrome, film school might be an answer. At the Joey Travolta Film School and summer camp, in Lafayette, California, kids work together to make a movie; they start with a script, create sets, operate the camera, act and direct. At the Hunter School, in Romney, New Hampshire, kids dealing with attention challenges can nurture mindbody awareness, energetic mindfulness and sensory integration. It all helps them get to know themselves and relate better to others. Outdoor skills can help teens develop healthy risk-taking behaviors, as well as teach resilience, perseverance and self-reliance. SheJumps (SheJumps. org), in Salt Lake City, offers young women 6 to 18 years old an opportunity to master outdoor living skills, boost confidence and encourage leadership via collaborating with strong female role models. Fun activities include mountain biking, skiing and trailblazing.

Leadership

Over time, experiential learning can help youths develop leadership skills. Lander, Wyoming’s National Outdoor Leadership School, a gap-year program for high school graduates taking a year off before college, offers courses lasting two weeks, several months or even a full year. Activities include sea kayaking, Alaskan mountain and glacier climbing and wilderness medicine. Teens already on track and wanting to develop additional leadership skills can tap into motivational speaker and self-help author Tony Robbins’ annual Unleash the Power Within youth leadership program event. Groups of youths 14 to 17 years old collectively

p a r t i c i p a t e t o c r e a t e i n d iv i d u a l breakthroughs, move beyond fears and limiting beliefs, accomplish goals and realize true desires. Application requirements include a good academic record, at least 20 hours of community service and a guidance counselor’s recommendation. Robbins maintains, “Grow and give is what life is all about.”

Service to Others

A way for youngsters 5 to 19 years old to become empowered is by joining a 4-H group in urban, suburban or rural areas. If we envision a farm kid raising a calf to show at the state fair, that’s still one facet of today’s 4-H, but far from the entire scope. Founded in 1902, 4-H is a global nonprofit dedicated to learning by doing; specialties now range from computer science and graphic design to leadership, healthy living and the performing arts. Positive mentoring by adults and developing community spirit ground 4-H clubs, camps and programs. Research by Tufts University’s Institute f o r A p p l i e d R e s e a r c h i n Yo u t h Development and America’s landgrant colleges and universities shows that people with a 4-H background are more likely to give back to their communities than others (see Tinyurl. com/YouthDevelopmentStudy). For Grammy-winner Jennifer Nettles, of Nashville, 4-H meant learning to perform at an early age, even flying to Chicago to do it. “I don’t know that I would be where I am today without 4-H,” she says. “Mentors there help you. They helped me with the skills of performing and learning about being on stage; they also taught me the importance of giving back.”

Sustainable Sustenance

Growing food for themselves and others can be a great adventure for teens, while fostering resourcefulness, perseverance and ecological awareness. Seventeenyear-old Katie Stagliano launched Katie’s Crops, in Summerville, South Carolina, several years ago based on her desire to fight hunger by growing food for people that need it. Today, the enterprise offers grants for youth in any area to start and maintain a local garden, provided they give away the produce to the hungry. natural awakenings

The initiative has grown to more than 50 gardens around the U.S. Both Mobile Urban Growers, in Mobile, Alabama, and Closer to Earth, in Oklahoma City, empower youth through exercising organic gardening skills, environmental and food justice advocacy and personal mentorship. Empowering experiences for teens don’t have to cost a lot or involve travel. “Dream big, but start small. Look around your own backyard, in your community,” says Borba. “Teens can learn to pay it forward in all kinds of ways. They can get together with their peers and take on a doable project to help others. They may even need to start by learning to self-regulate and manage stress by getting away from their phones and instead being outside getting exercise.” Casual family activities can provide opportunities for conversations about what teens want in life or what they’re worried about, and that opens the door for adults to step up to help mentor and empower their children. “Boys are more likely to talk while they’re doing something, like shooting baskets with you in the driveway,” observes Borba. “Girls are more likely to talk if it’s oneon-one.” Positive parents actively listen and then clarify what they heard from their teens, says Herman-Saccio. This information helps point the way forward, to more interactive dialogue, brainstorming, problem-solving, helpful experiences and eventually, youth empowerment. To Change The World, Be The Change by Gladys Wesley Kennedy In these times, confusion, fear, desire, and mass manipulation are the life theme of mankind. In these times, the vast majority of humans are lost and entirely driven by unconscious motivations, beliefs, delusionary life goals, and toxic relationships. Today, there is so much abundance evident everywhere, yet most of us live in fear that time is running out. We fear that the oceans, rivers, streams and all other waters will inevitably be contaminated or soon dry out. Many of us dreadfully anticipate the day when the air will choke all breathing beings to their premature physical deaths. Others are consumed with worry that the economic structure will crumble and fall, leaving us to suffer or tragically die from the human consequences of ignorance, greed, hunger, rape, conflict, and thievery. Even more of us nervously prepare for the, socalled, imminent “Doomsday” to strike; anticipating asteroids plummeting the earth; earthquakes ripping apart whole continents—plunging major cities into the depths of the swelling, roaring, angry

oceans. Oceans, formerly long-known for their abundant healthy bounty; but now, their fish and other vital inhabitants are being physically maimed, and their sustaining water’s nature toxified beyond repair. Consequently, beaches and land animals are being poisoned, killed, genetically deformed and forever altered, or worse—rendered extinct—by having to live amongst the unfortunate human ravages of exorbitant over-fishing, mountains of plastics, hundreds of miles of random floating wastes, toxic chemicals, as well as human and animal excrement. Why do we choose to live with greed and selfishness? Why do we choose to live in fear, instead of optimism? Why do we choose to overconsume, instead of being content with ‘enough’? Why do we choose to continue to produce ever-growing waste, instead of creating ecologically beneficial waste management systems? Why do we choose to sleep through the bad storm, instead of waking up and making a difference?

Why do we continue to allow ourselves to dream a “mad dream?” Why do we not care enough to endeavor to repair, heal, and prevent more detrimental effects of our selfishness and arrogance? Why? We do not see the error of our ways. The vast majority of people today do not recognize, or rather refuse to recognize, on any perceptual level, the true plight, or more accurately, the potential gift of honestly and courageously recognizing, facing, and changing ourselves, our world, and our life presents. In these times, we choose to live as a complacent un-evolving species. Humankind has become too comfortable and resolved to live as sleeping dreamers trapped in our own nightmare. We are lost in a declining reality, which is not real. We need to recognize the illusion for what it really is—a gift. Fortunately, all of life is impermanent. Reality is not fixed. It is important for us to know and remember that our reality and life conditions are changeable. Our reality is repairable. Our reality is completely moldable. Hence, the gift is, since we can perceive the problems and consequences of our ignorant ways, we can also perceive of and implement the solutions. With our mind, thoughts, and actions, we create and can intentionally recreate everything and anything. H e n c e , t o d ay, w e h ave t h e opportunity, ability, and awareness, to transform and uplift ourselves, our reality, our earth, our universe and beyond. We simply need to wake up from our complacent slumber and mad dream, and bravely choose to begin to “dream a better dream.” What does this mean? It means that, since we can

notice our own inner diseases and daily life battles, such as habitual bouts of fear, anger, depression, anxiety, loathing, compulsions, addictions, desires, and emotional attachments, then, we can intentionally elicit positive change by changing our own perspectives and mindset about ourselves, world, and daily reality. How? We begin to choose to change whenever we recognize that we are thinking, perceiving, or experiencing some expression of internal or external destruction, disharmony, or angst, (i.e., mental, emotional, or physical agitation or pain). Endeavor to recognize its disturbing cause, which is always our negative mindset. Then, interrupt and change the way we are thinking, emoting, and behaving, in present moment. Specifically, as we recognize an eruption of mental or emotional distress, interrupt the problematic thoughts by envisioning specific details of an improved situation. In other words, conceive in mind the desired relationship or amended mental, emotional, physical, societal, or environmental manifestation. Imagination is the key. The ability to think about and conceive of solutions is the solution for all unwanted or undesirable life circumstances—within ourselves, our society, and our world. The only change ever needed is simple and possible to achieve. Change the way you think and how you perceive yourself and reality. Make a habit of envisioning solutions and living the solutions, in mind, action, and reaction. We change our mind to change our life and world. Since you have chosen to read this article, consider it time for you to start to change, heal, and grow. Consider this article your invitation and opportunity to dream a better dream. Therefore, begin now. Whenever you encounter any aspect of the mad dream—in mind, body, emotion, or daily reality—simply follow these five life-changing steps: 1. Conceive the solution. 2. Define the solution. 3. Express the solution. 4. Pursue the solution. 5. Become the solution. Congratulations! The true gift is in knowing that life is impermanent and changeable. Therefore, know that you can and do make all the difference in this world. Finally, always remember: “To change the world, be the change you wish to experience.”

EARTH GUARDIANS Kids Say No to Global Warming by April Thompson

A

t age 6, climate change activist Xiuhtezcatl Martinez gave his first speech to a packed crowd in his hometown of Boulder, Colorado. Raised in the Aztec tradition, he was taught that as indigenous people, they are descendants of the land and inherit a duty to protect it. “I felt such sadness that my generation inherited this crisis to clean up. That night, I saw that those emotions could be channeled into action and my voice could make a difference,” says Martinez, founder and youth director of the nonprofit Earth Guardians. Ten years later, his impassioned message has sparked a global movement. More than 2,000 “youth crews” from Bhutan to Brazil are fighting climate change and improving their communities in other ways. These activists aren’t yet old enough to vote, but are still making their voices heard by global policymakers. On their behalf, Martinez delivered a plea to representatives from 192 countries at the United Nations General Assembly meeting on climate change last year, asking for stronger measures to protect both the planet and its people. He particularly pointed to the ever-increasing “climate refugees” that have lost their homes to rising oceans and other havoc caused by Earth’s warming trend. Although Martinez serves on natural awakenings

President Obama’s youth council, he and 20 other yo u n g p l a i n t i f f s filed a landmark lawsuit earlier this year against the federal government for failing to protect its citizens from climate change. The plaintiffs are seeking a court order requiring America’s president to establish a national plan to decrease atmospheric concentrations of carbon dioxide to “safe” levels by 2100. At home, Martinez is working with Boulder County community and environmental organizations to locally eliminate pesticides from parks, charge for plastic bags at retail, regulate coal ash emissions and ban fracking. EarthGuardians.org offers many way s a nyo n e c a n p l u g i n t o t h e movement, whether taking individual actions to lighten our carbon footprint, creating school gardens or signing its Silence into Action pledge, inspired by Martinez’s younger brother Itzcuauhtli’s 45-day silence strike for climate action. “The most important thing you can do is educate yourself. Whatever makes you come alive, use that passion to make a difference,” says Martinez, whose performances as a pianist and hip-hop artist inform and enliven music festivals worldwide. “Together, we can create a legacy we can be proud to pass on to the next generation.” Connect with freelance writer April Thompson, of Washington, D.C., at AprilWrites.com. The Void by Shri Mataji

S

aha means ‘with’, Ja means ‘born’. Sahaja also means effortless or spontaneous. Yoga literally means union or connection. Th i s m e t h o d o f meditation is born with every human being and it connects us with the inner peace and silence that exists deep within each of us. Sahaja Yoga was founded by Her Holiness Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi in 1970. It involves the awakening of a subtle spiritual energy known as the Kundalini which lies dormant in the sacrum bone, rolled up in a spiral of 3-1/2 coils. The gentle awakening of this Kundalini energy and the inner journey of selfdiscovery is known as self-realization. Th i s p r o c e s s o f self-realization is centuries old and was practiced by saints throughout the history for example Confucius, Moses, Sai Nath, Guru Nanak, etc. However, this technique was passed by these primordial masters to just one or two disciples and this could never become popular. Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi, developed this method by which a normal householder can experience this awakening sitting in his or her house.

Shri Mataji was born in India, and was brought up with a Christian background. She started teaching the technique of Sahaja Yoga meditation to a couple of people in India in the early 1970’s. Then, slowly more and more people in India started to practice it. In the late 1970’s Shri Mataji moved to London, England. There she also started to teach Sahaja Yoga meditation to a small group of people. Now the meditation is practiced in over 50 countries, at no cost. Sahaja Yoga meditation is free. Previously, to get kundalini awakening, the person would have to dedicate a number of years of his life to get the experience. He would have to find a genuine guru who would then open one chakra at a time. Shri Mataji, through the technique of Sahaja Yoga meditation, was able to awaken the kundalini and the chakras in seconds. In this article, we will discuss the region that surrounds 2nd and 3rd energy center often referred to as the Void. In the figure below it is the yellow circle

shown around the 3rd energy center, Nabhi chakra. In the article o n S a h a j a Yo g a , published in previous i s s u e s o f N a t u ra l Awakening, human subtle/spiritual system, Mooladhara, Swadhisthana and Nabhi energy center were discussed, respectively. As discussed in December article, human body is made up of 3 channels and 7 energy centers. The left channel controls our emotions, the right channel controls the actions and planning and the central channel gets us into balance and is responsible for our assent. Surrounding the second and the third energy center is a Void which incorporates all the aspects of existence such as personality, the effects of the planets and gravitational forces on our being, our behavior pattern and physical sustenance. This is an area of outside influence. It represents that vacuum which separates our level of awareness from the truth while we are still in the unenlightened state. When the kundalini fills this vacuum then our attention is lead out of the sea of illusion into the awareness of reality. This is the center of ten Primordial Masters who incarnated to lead mankind into the realm of truth and reality. They were: Raja Janak (10,000-16,000 BC), Abraham (2000 BC), Moses (1300 BC), Zarathustra (1000 BC), Lao Tzu (640 BC), Confucius (551 BC), Scorates (469 BC), Mohammed (570 AD), Guru Nanak (1469 AD), Shirdi Sainath (1856 AD). When Kundalini bridges this vacuum, one becomes the master of self and all innate laws of nature are awakened in that person. Such person becomes a very honest and able leader and has gravity in all his expression. This center controls the functioning of stomach, digestion, intestine and part of liver in human body. Its element is water. Each chakra in human body has different qualities and by healing and balancing these chakras, we awaken and enhance these qualities within us. The qualities represented by the Void are gravity, ten commandments, August 2016

to really satisfy ourselves, the kingdom of heaven lies within us and so we may begin seeking in earnest for our inner or ultimate fulfillment. Each separated and conditioned sense of Chakra is represented on our hands, self we experience ourselves and the feet and our head. This gap actually exists of connection, nourishment and physically between the sacral outflow security. This seeking finds expression and the vagus nerve, encompassing in many ways. Sometimes we seek the subtle area called the Void or the gross physical pleasures and external ocean of illusion. To cross this gap, this and material satisfactions in the world, ocean of Illusion we need to develop yet these invariably do not fully satisfy balance, self-mastery and pure desire. us, they prove to be stormy, transient We also require the help of a true Guru. and therefore illusory. It is in this state of disconnectedness that seekers may search for a guide or Guru to help them find the way, a path or process to cross the Void, the illusions and connect with that source of all satisfaction, joy and fulfilment, the Divine Source, Tao, or God. Ten Commandments. Moses, as an example of the Guru principle, led his people out of slavery, across the ocean and to the Promised Land. Shri Mataji in this modern era holds a unique place in the tradition of Gurus because she has created a method for en masse Kundalini awakening and so facilitated the creation of so many potentially enlightened Gurus. Only Kundalini can bridge that great divide between illusion and reality. On first awakening, Kundalini ascends through the central channel up to 6th center. It covers the lower plate (moordha) then descends like melting clouds on the Ida (left channel) and Pingala (right channel) nadis to the Void. It fills this area and then the three combined powers re-ascend the Sushumna (central) to open the lotus petals of the Sahasrara. The Spirit, which is said to be watching through the manifold subtle auras of the heart, has its seat at the top of the head in the center. When the individual spark of the Spirit is raised and reunited in Union or Yoga, with the all-pervading and all-powerful source at the apex of the Sahasrara then the reality of the essential core of existence is realized and this enables one to start to become his own Guru, based on a new enlightened awareness. These are some simple techniques that can help balance the Void and establish its qualities within any individual. In order to get more information, it is advisable to attend S a h a j a Yo g a c l a s s e s w h i c h a r e completely free. No money is charged anywhere anytime as it is a non-profit organization. Seekers who wish to achieve their awakening can visit any center, which are run in various parts of Houston, Monday through Thursday in the evenings. Details can be found out at www.houston-meditation.org for all Sahaja Yoga meetings in Houston. There is no prerequisite for the class. JUST WALK 22 Minutes a Day Boosts Well-Being by Randy Kambic

E

ven mainstream media have picked up on the many physical and mental benefits of walking, including weight loss, reduced stress, increased energy and better sleep, and that’s only the beginning. These additional compelling effects may well catalyze us to consistently step out for a daily walk, understanding that cumulative steps count, too. For more inspiration, check out this month’s race walking at the Summer Olympics. Walking helps heart health and diabetes. According to the U.S. Surgeon General’s Call to Action on Walking program launched last fall, the risk of heart disease and diabetes can be significantly reduced via an average of 22 minutes a day of brisk walking. “Physical activity has been shown to reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, certain cancers, osteoporosis, cognitive decline and even depression,” says Dr. JoAnn Manson, chief of the division of preventive medicine at Boston’s Brigham

and Women’s Hospital. “Can you imagine if there was a pill that could simultaneously have all those benefits? Everyone would be clamoring for it.” Walking reduces anxiety and clears thinking. The results of a national survey of nearly 3,000 women between the ages of 42 and 52 published in the journal Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise found that those that walked as part of a regular physical activity showed fewer signs of depression compared with inactive women. The more physical activity a woman logged, the less likely she was to exhibit such symptoms, suggesting that moderate-to-intense levels of exercise may help protect against mental illness. The survey further revealed that 85 percent believe walking helps reduce any present anxiety and feelings of depression, while two-thirds reported that walking stimulates their thinking. Walking facilitates doctor-patient communication. Columbus, Ohio-based Walk with a Doc (WalkWithADoc.org) helps organize free walking events each month via 230 chapters nationwide. They’re led by physicians and other healthcare authorities. “It’s a casual forum in which to communicate and also learn about the health benefits of walking,” says Executive Director Rachael Habash, who’s aiming for 350 chapters by year’s end. When doctors emphasize the benefits of exercise, patients tend to listen. Walking boosts life performance. “Until the late 1960s, 90 percent of America’s children that lived up to a mile away walked to school. Today, that figure is 30 percent,” says Sheila Franklin, of the National Coalition for Promoting Physical Activity, in The Walking Revolution documentary (scroll to the video at EveryBodyWalk.org). Experts warn that less walking by youngsters can create sedentary habits and lead to shortened life spans. Daily walks to school boost cognitive performance in students, according to Mary Pat King, the National Parent Teacher Association director of programs and projects. Dr. Richard Jackson, a pediatrician, professor and chair of Environmental Health Sciences at the School of Public Health at University of California, Los Angeles,. and former environmental health director

The moment my legs begin to move, my thoughts begin to flow. ~Henry David Thoreau at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, reports that walking improves children’s learning ability, concentration, moods and creativity. Even lifelong walkers are moved to walk more by using a pedometer to track their steps and distance traveled, says Dr. Lauren Elson, a physical medicine and rehabilitation instructor at Harvard Medical School, who is also the medical editor of the recent Harvard Special Health Report Walking for Health (Health.Harvard.edu/walk). A metareview of 26 studies found that using the device raised physical activity levels by nearly 27 percent, adding about 2,500 steps per day. Most stores that sell exercise equipment offer inexpensive pedometers, while smartphone users can download an app such as Moves, Breeze or Pedometer++. Apple’s iOS includes the free app Health. Walking leads to meaningful exchanges. Social connections and honest conversations between two people can be aided by walking outside instead of sitting inside. Clay Cockrell, a licensed clinical social worker in New York City, began walking with clients 12 years ago. He notes that casual venues like parks have been especially helpful for men. “They sometimes have a more difficult time making eye contact in sessions. Outside, they are looking where they are going, looking at nature, other people—the pressure is less. My own health has improved, as well,” he says. He shares ideas with the public and other therapists at WalkAndTalk.com to maximize the benefits. He sees moving the body forward along a path as a metaphor for moving forward in life. Adds Habash, “We believe that engaging in health should be simple and fun, like putting one foot in front of the other at every opportunity.” Randy Kambic is an Estero, FL, freelance writer and editor who regularly contributes to Natural Awakenings.

Protect Your Thyroid with Detoxified Iodine Give Your Body the Natural Boost it Needs

The Hidden Deficiency Having the proper amount of iodine in our system at all times is critical to overall health, yet the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition finds that iodine deficiency is increasing drastically in light of an increasingly anemic national diet of unpronounceable additives and secret, unlabeled ingredients. This deficit now affects nearly three-quarters of the population.

Causes of Iodine Deficiency

Radiation

Almost everyone is routinely exposed to iodine-depleting radiation

Low-Sodium Diets

I feel much more energetic, my thoughts are extremely clear, and my entire body feels more in balance. Natural Awakenings Detoxified Iodine is the only change in my daily routine over the last 45 days. The way I feel today is better than at any point in my life that I can remember. ~ James

A Few Drops Can Change Your Life!

Iodized Table Salt

Iodized salt may slowly lose its iodine content by exposure to air

Bromine

A toxic chemical found in baked goods overrides iodine's ability to aid thyroid

Iodine-Depleted Soil Poor farming techniques have led to declined levels of iodine in soil

A Growing Epidemic Symptoms range from extreme fatigue and weight gain to depression, carpal tunnel syndrome, high blood pressure, fibrocystic breasts and skin and hair problems. This lack of essential iodine can also cause infertility, joint pain, heart disease and stroke. Low iodine levels also have been associated with breast and thyroid cancers; and in children, intellectual disability, deafness, attention deficient hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and impaired growth, according to studies by Boston University and the French National Academy of Medicine.

You could feel better, lose weight or increase energy and mental clarity with a few drops of Natural Awakenings DETOxIfIED IODInE daily in water or topically on the skin. The supplementation of iodine, an essential component of the thyroid, has been reported to give relief from: • Depression • Weight Gain • Fibromyalgia • Low Energy • Hypothyroidism • Hyperthyroidism • Radiation • Bacteria • Viruses

$19.99 plus $5 shipping • 1 btl. = 6-8 week supply Order today, available only at

What to Do The easy solution is taking the right kind of iodine in the right dosage to rebalance thyroid function and restore health to the whole body. Houston

}

I’ve been taking this product for over a year and no single supplement, diet or approach (I have tried lots) has had as great an impact as this. I have my energy back, my metabolism is back on track and my mind is clear and the depression has lifted. I love this product and wish more people knew about it. I think many of us are deficient in iodine and it can bring balance to the body. Thank you, thank you Natural Awakenings for offering it! ~ Pamela

Proper iodine supplementation with a high-quality product like Natural Awakenings Detoxified Iodine can prevent harm by protecting the thyroid and other endocrine glands from radiation and restoring proper hormone production.

Overuse of zero-nutrient salt substitutes in foods leads to iodine depletion

RETREATS

YOGA

THE BEAUTIFUL ROAD HOME:

NAMASTE YOGA

OCTOBER 7 -12, 2016. This retreat will seek to share the gentle journey which occurs as the soul moves out of the physical body -- what might be expected after the death of the physical -- and the new life which awaits. There will be sessions on understanding the process of grief and on helping those whom we love through this transition. One of the important facets of the White Eagle work is that of working with the souls who need help to light their passage from the earth. Together we will be learning through group healing work, how we might help. 5 day retreat cost is $725 including meals and lodging. See our website for more details.

We are a “boutique” Yoga Studio conveniently located in the heart of the Energy Corridor in West Houston, we offer a variety of yoga classes and styles to cater for the needs of our community. Our classes are small giving us an opportunity to develop a relationship with all our students getting to know their name and enjoying a chat after class over tea is part of who we are. We offer classes for first timers as well as experienced Yogis. Our schedule includes Ashtanga Yoga, Vinyasa, Slow Flow, Yin Yoga, Mindful Meditation, Kids and Prenatal yoga and private classes, there is a class for everyone in the family!!! As part of giving back to the community and doing “our bit” we have a Community Class every Sunday at 9:45am, we have been offering the class ever since we started as we believe everyone should have an opportunity to practice and enjoy yoga.
