MEET OUR

COVER CUTIE!

The baby of our family turned 13 in February and I am now officially a mom of three teenage boys (yes, that may be a silent scream for help!). While I knew this day was coming, my heart took it harder than expected. It’s true what they say, the days are long, but the years are short. As I embark on this new journey as the mom of teenagers, I wanted to share a few tips and trade secrets I have learned along the way as a mom and as the publisher of Giggle Magazine for all of you expecting and new moms out there as you embark on your own journey into motherhood!

TIPS FROM ONE MOM TO ANOTHER: • Mother’s intuition is REAL! Lean into it. • You know your child best, so don’t be afraid to be their, and your, advocate at all times.

• Know that if you put white clothes on any child, they will be dirty within minutes.

I am 7 months old. My favorite food is bananas. My favorite lullaby is Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star. My favorite book is Goodnight Moon.

• Baby wipes will be your new best friend, stock up. • If they have a favorite of anything, buy backups! • You will mess up, it’s ok. • You have the right to change your mind. • No one can do it alone, nor should you have to.

I am the happiest anytime I'm outside and when my dad comes home from work!

Ask for help! Even superheroes have help!

• Your child will not go to college with a pacifier in their mouth & only eating puffs.

• You will need to become a nurse-in-training as kids will get sick with All.The.Things!

• Take ME time and never apologize for it. A happy YOU, is a happy MOM.

• Try not to compare yourself to other moms or what you see on social media.

• Get in the photos, don’t just take the photos. • Leave the dishes in the sink and the laundry in the basket… and get on the floor and play!

• The swaddle, sush, sway procedure is a LIFE SAVER! Learn it. Do it. You’re welcome!

• At the end of the day, you do what is best for you and your family! • And most importantly, take it all in!!! It won’t be long before you too will be celebrating your last baby’s 13th birthday with tears in your eyes for what was and what will be.

# bossmom

mom's corner | #bossmom

As a mom, you quite literally do it all! Between working and making sure your kiddo gets to school with a matching pair of shoes, it proves to be the toughest job anyone could do. Our Giggle moms have shared with us what makes them a #BossMom, and we are all for it!

Rachael Wacha Mom to: Samuel (13) and Ocean (6) Owner of City Auto Repair

Share a bit about where you work and what are some of your goals. I own City Auto Repair, a local auto repair shop. We do our best to be a one-stop shop for our customers. We do everything from oil changes, tires, brakes, A/C repair to engine and transmission repairs or replacement. Our Mission: “Repair the brokenness in cars, the people that drive them, and the communities that rely on them.” I believe I have the opportunity to improve the industry one customer, one employee and one shop at a time.

What is your favorite part of being a mom? I love seeing my kid’s smile and hearing them laugh, especially when they are playing together.

What is the hardest part of being a mom? Time! I think most can agree, it’s difficult feeling like there is not enough time to spend with the kids and as a family. With sports, school and running a business, the guilt feeling is the worst.

What gets you up in the morning? Besides the alarm clock? Motivation to make a difference in the automotive industry. I make myself laugh all the time.

What has been the biggest life lesson that you have learned being a parent? How fortunate I am to be a huge part of teaching them how to be great human beings.

What is your parenting mantra?

Rachael and Randy Wacha with their children Ocean (6) and Samuel (13)

I can only control myself. I think this is

something that is important to teach my kids as well as it being a constant reminder to myself.

I can only control myself. I think this is something that is important to teach my kids as well as it being a constant reminder to myself.

How do you balance it all and what advice would you give other #Bossmoms? Lots of support from my husband, Randy Wacha! I was advised that there is no such thing as truly balancing life, so when in doubt choose family.

Are you a #BossMom or do you know one? Do you work hard at home and at work? Giggle Magazine wants to hear your story! Visit Gigglemagazine.com to submit your #BossMom for a chance to be featured in one of our upcoming issues.

What makes you laugh?

GIVE YOUR TEEN SOMETHING TO smile ABOUT WITH

How do you relate to other #Bossmoms? Sharing stories always helps encourage each other.

Share a funny parenting story that all parents can relate to. When my son was three I decided I was going to cut his hair. When I went to cut it for some reason I decided to go right down the middle of his head with the clippers and the guard fell off and I buzzed his head down to the skin. He still remembers this moment and reminds me of how horrible it was. We ended up having to buzz his entire head. We still laugh about how pale his head was. Needless to say he doesn’t let me cut his hair.

If you could have any superpower to help parent your kids, what would it be? I want a superpower that can take others pain/heartache away. Recently my son had a rough day at baseball practice. He also has ankle pronation which after having to run, jump etc. at practice he was in a ton of pain. He cried in the shower. When I laid down by his side to say goodnight I told him if I had a superpower it would be one that could take all his pain away! He told me, "of course you would, because that's what moms do, they always make sure everyone's okay."

What is your go-to meal at home that you cook? Funny, but my husband does most of the cooking. He usually takes over anything I try to cook.

What do you do for YOU on a weekly basis? Great question, this is something we all need to work more on. I don’t do anything specific on a weekly basis. If we don’t fill our tank up then it’s pretty hard to keep filling up everyone else's.

LOCAL MOMS SHARE THEIR TIPS FOR EXPECTING AND DELIVERING A BABY DURING A PANDEMIC Congratulations, you are expecting and… we are in the middle of a pandemic! Many expecting parents never thought they would hear those two phrases together, but as the pandemic has been around for a little over a year, more and more parents are finding that delivering a new baby into the world amid such chaos is what they have to plan for. As this is new territory for many of us, who better to share tips on how to handle a pregnancy and birth during a pandemic than moms who went through it first hand.

Caroline Chance Earls with husband Ryan Mom to 2 children

Big sister Cora and baby Nathan born February 2021 Had son at North Florida Regional Medical Center

Be proactive and intentional about your support system. Being pregnant and postpartum can be isolating and challenging enough, let alone in a pandemic. Some of the ways I built my mom tribe last time were unavailable in the same ways, like prenatal yoga and postpartum moms luncheons. So I needed to be much more intentional and proactive about creating a support network. For me that included apps like Marco Polo so I could have more regular contact with my mom friends, and could reach out to acquaintances that I knew were also pregnant. Say Yes when your family and friends want to do nice things for you. I was initially resistant to a virtual baby shower because it felt awkward and I feel like everyone had so much going on. But it was truly so special to feel supported and loved in this bizarre time. Because I said “yes” (after some gentle pushing from my friends), I have a meal train of friends and family bringing food postpartum, gifts that made the transition easier as we became a family of four, balloons, flowers and cookies delivered the day we got home from the hospital and a virtual check in with my loved ones. Have the hard conversations about the virus. Get clear with your partner about what you are comfortable with in terms of who meets the baby, when, and what it looks like. Are you more comfortable if only vaccinated people hold the baby, or are you requiring masks? Are you only going to do outside meetings or not letting anyone hold the little one for a certain amount of time? Or would we feel so excited for grandma

Doctor’s appointments look different, as at my care facility, partners can only come to ultrasounds but not the actual meeting with the doctor. to hold the baby, however it looks. Whatever you decide, it feels important to be on the same page with your partner and then communicate this to your loved ones. Expect things to look a little different and adjust expectations. Ask your providers how prenatal and postal care and delivery will differ from the norm. This is especially true if you’ve had a previous baby. Doctor’s appointments look different, as at my care facility, partners can only come to ultrasounds but not the actual meeting with the doctor. For a friend, her facility had a lot of telehealth visits. At our hospital, only one person was allowed during the whole stay with no switching out. So no other visitors during our three-day hospital stay. Knowing what to expect was helpful in adjusting our vision. Ask for help. Being pregnant and postpartum is hard. One in seven women and one in ten men experience perinatal mood and anxiety disorders. And this statistic is not during a global pandemic, which is associated with higher rates of adverse mental health conditions. Ask for and seek help and support. Whether this looks like individual, couples or group therapy, someone to hold your colic baby, or help to clean up your house - ask for help. GIGGLEMAGAZINE.COM | APRIL/MAY 2021

mom's corner | #momhacks to check on the baby helped alleviate some of my stresses. Delivering during COVID-19 was different but not scary. Babies will be born, pandemic or not. My team at UF Health increased their precautions during my very fast labor as the results from my COVID-19 test didn’t have enough time to come back before delivery. But with the exception of masks being worn and no visitors, our experience was very similar as our other children. It actually made the time with our newest addition that much sweeter.

Being pregnant during the pandemic was scary and full of anxiety. With two older children, you didn’t know if their sniffles or sore throats were allergies or COVID. But, the best advice I could give is to continue good hand hygiene, social distancing and mask wearing. I also felt more comfortable as I was very honest with my health care team. Using our electronic charts for conversations, texting and even extra appointments

Margot DeConna with husband Nick Mom to 2 children Big brother Gabriel (4.5) and Liliana born January 2021 Had daughter at UF Health.

Meet with your doctor’s clinic manager. I met with mine (at UF Health) to share all of my concerns and sadness over the things they weren’t offering, like a hospital tour. I suggested they film a virtual tour like realtors have been doing. UF wasn’t offering any birthing classes when I was pregnant and I think they still aren’t. We hired a private doula to come to our home to do a birthing class with us. Take a breastfeeding class! They are finally offering them via Zoom at UF. Make sure you get the contact info for the lactation consultant teaching your class and don’t be afraid to use it! Lactation consultants saved my life the first few weeks postpartum. Breastfeeding is harder than anyone will ever tell you. The more support you have, the easier it is to stick to it!

GIGGLEMAGAZINE.COM | APRIL/MAY 2021

Upon arriving home, we were greeted with well wishes, prayers and the kindness of our community, delivering gifts, dinner and Target runs. We asked those that supported us like this to remain outside with their mask on, as I gave them a brief look at the baby from the safety of the foyer. For those that weren’t comfortable making a personal delivery, we were also blessed with food deliveries from DoorDash and Uber Eats. This is a great way to still support a new baby’s family from the comfort and safety of your own home.

7. Let rise for one hour. 8. Split dough ball into two even pieces, split each of those into three even pieces. For each loaf, roll each of the three small pieces into ropes about 12-15 inches long, about 1” in diameter. Braid the three pieces into a braided loaf. 9. Grease baking sheet or line with parchment. Place the braided loaves onto the pan, cover with a towel and let rise again for one hour. 10. Make an egg wash and brush each loaf completely and bake at 350° for about 20-25 minutes until golden. 11. Cool on a wire rack

How to Keep Blood Pressure Under Control BY LINDSEY JOHNSON, MS, MCHES

May is National High Blood Pressure Education Month. On a scale of 1-10, how would you rate your knowledge about blood pressure? Many people have a general awareness of blood pressure readings and likely know one or more people with hypertension or elevated blood pressure, but do you know why this is important?

What Exactly IS Blood Pressure?

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) defines blood pressure as “the pressure of blood pushing against the walls of your arteries. Arteries carry blood from your heart to other parts of your body.” The top number is the systolic pressure and measures the amount of pressure in your arteries when the heart beats. The bottom number is called the diastolic pressure and measures the pressure when the heart is at rest. Blood pressure is measured in millimeters of mercury (mm Hg).

Why Should I Care?

While blood pressure fluctuates throughout the day depending on activity and stress levels, sustained high blood pressure over time can cause damage to the heart and puts you at greater risk for heart disease and stroke, some of the top causes of death in the United States. According to the CDC, nearly half a million deaths in 2018 had hypertension as a primary or contributing cause.

What Can I Do to Reduce my Blood Pressure?

While there can be a genetic predisposition to high blood pressure, fortunately there are some lifestyle modifications that can help keep blood pressure in check. Besides family history, other factors that increase risk of hypertension include smoking, obesity, unhealthy diet, physical inactivity and excessive alcohol intake as well as uncontrollable factors such as age and race (African Americans have higher rates). Dr. Carl Dragstedt, DO, FACC, cardiologist with North Florida Veterans’ Health Administration states, “Beyond the use of anti-hypertensive medications, individuals can take several simple steps in their daily lives to reduce blood pressure. Maintaining modest weight loss, limiting alcohol intake, sticking to a diet rich in whole grains, fruits, vegetables and low-fat dairy products, and stopping smoking can all reduce hypertension. Regular aerobic exercise which includes walking, jogging, cycling, swimming, or dancing, approximately 30 minutes per day most days of the week, can lower one’s blood pressure by up to 5 to 8 mm Hg.

Blood Pressure Category

The CDC reports that 45% of American adults have hypertension, which is defined as a systolic reading of 130+ mm Hg or a diastolic reading of 80+ mm. Only 24% of those with diagnosed hypertension have it under control. Baseline blood pressure often rises with age, meaning that your 50-year-old self likely runs higher than you did in your 20s.

22

What Are You Waiting For?

If you don’t know your baseline blood pressure, check it a few times over the next week at different times of day when you are calm and relaxed. Automatic cuffs at home sometimes run high but many grocery and pharmacy chains such as Publix, CVS and Walgreens have blood pressure stations available at no charge. Many fire stations will also do a courtesy check. If your reading is high, wait a few minutes, relax and try again. Contact your provider if your readings are out of range or higher than usual for you. Making healthy lifestyle modifications such as those recommended by Dr. Dragstedt will help not only your blood pressure but many aspects of your overall health. For assistance creating a plan that targets your individual needs, talk to your provider about how you can reduce your risk.

ICE ROLLERS AND CYRO ROLLERS

Ice Ice, Baby! Benefits of Skin Icing BY NICOLE IRVING

Photos courtesy of manufacturers.

One of the latest beauty and anti-aging trends sweeping across social media is skin icing. While it may sound like the application of sugary products on your skin to melt away wrinkles, that isn’t quite it. Skin icing refers to placing ice, or cold applicators, in small intervals to the skin to remove puffiness, reduce oily skin and acne and boost a healthy glow, in addition to reducing the signs of wrinkles, according to Health Line. Healthline also noted that while there is no “definitive clinical research” that skin icing will have an effect, skin icing benefits are supported by anecdotal evidence.

HOW TO START SKIN ICING

HOW TO MAKE YOUR OWN ICING

1. First, make sure that you review your plan with your doctor or your dermatologist.

You don’t have to use just ice cubes made out of water to ice your skin. There are other ingredients that are beneficial to the skin. No matter what you choose, make sure it is fresh, clean and chemical free, as you will be applying it directly to the skin. Add ingredients to clean and specifically designated ice cube trays or silicone forms.

2. Clean skin with your daily mild cleanser. 3. Dry skin. 4. Using either a skin icing applicator or ice cubes wrapped in a soft towel/ cloth, use small circular motions, or up and down if using a roller, around the cheeks, jawline, neck, sides of nose, forehead, chin and gently under the eyes. Continue moving around the face for a minute. 5. Repeat daily

1. Coconut milk: contains essential amino acids

2. Aloe vera gel: contains vitamins C and E 3. Green tea: has anti-inflammatory properties

If you want to get all the benefits of the cold without any added ingredients, you can perform skin icing using just a cold applicator like a face roller or cryo ball to get the same benefits. Prior to use, clean the roller and then place it in the freezer for four - six hours. Roll on your face in circular motion or up and down for a minute. Repeat daily. Skin by Brownlee & Co. Cryotherapy Ball $25 skinbybrownleeandco.com This stainless steel, facial ball takes the place of ice. Used to calm inflammation and speed up your skin's recovery process, it combines the art of massaging with ice therapy to reduce inflammation Helpcook Round Ice Ball Molds - Silicone (4Pack) $11.99 Amazon These silicone ice ball molds are perfect to create your own skin icing balls. NOTE: Fill ½ way with liquid. Put top on, fill the mold until full. Freeze. To use: take off the top, keep ice in the bottom mold, and use it on the face. ESARORA Ice Roller for Face & Eye $16.99 Amazon This ice roller can be used to ease puffiness in the face, reduce inflammation and calm skin and reduce the effects of burns.

D.I.Y. Tabletop Terrariums Bring the beauty of a blossoming garden into the comfort of your home with these creative terrariums. These tiny patches of plants are low- maintenance, and they are sure to add a creative touch to any room in the house. Just check in every once in a while to see if your terrarium needs water, and make sure to air it out if it gets too damp. Use these charming decorations for an indoor touch of summer sunshine!

• CONTAINER: Do you want an open or closed

terrarium? An open terrarium requires a slight misting every once in a while, while a closed terrarium will be self-sufficient, as the water condensates and is recycled by the plants. Make sure the top isn't loose! –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– • PLANTS: Choose plants of different heights and leaf shapes to make your terrarium visually interesting. We used a variety of succulents, but you can also use herbs, ivy or ferns. You can always remove a plant and replace it with something else if you find it isn't working. –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– • PEBBLES

Directions

1 2

Place a layer of pebbles or rocks in the bottom of your container. Add enough for adequate drainage. The next layer is activated charcoal, which can be found at your local fish store (it's used in fish tanks). Place a thin layer over the pebbles.

3 4

Soil goes in next, making sure to leave enough room for the roots of your plants. If you have a very shallow container, you may need to skip this step.

5

A moss layer goes in next; you can find it at your local craft store. You can pack it in around the sides. If you are using hardy succulents or cacti, you can fill in the top with pebbles.

6 7

Don't forget your decorations! Top your terrarium with fun dinosaurs or toadstools! Use your paintbrush to gently clean the leaves and flowers.

Time for plants! Make sure they don't touch the glass. If it won't hurt the plant, you can use your scissors to trim any stray leaves. For tiny terrariums, use a pair of tweezers to gently place plants in soil.

Keep your terrarium in sunlight, but keep an eye on it. The glass can magnify the effects of the sun and overheat the plants. You may need to reposition if they are getting too much sun. A closed terrarium should be self-sufficient and require no watering. For an open terrarium, a misting every couple of days should be enough. Keep an eye on your creation; if it seems too dry, you may need to mist it more often. As the plants grow, you may need to trim any leaves that grow out and over the top of your container.

A Shift in Pace:

Knowing How to Drive a Manual Vehicle is Important For Everyone! BY NICOLE IRVING | ILLUSTRATION BY ANIBAL RODRIGUEZ

According to Edmonds.com, in 2019 approximately 1.2% of new cars sold for the year had manual transmissions. And while 96% of Americans own an automatic transmission vehicle, the same does not ring true of families in Europe. Reader's Digest reports that most 15-16 year olds in Europe learn how to drive on a manual car. This could also have something to do with the extreme cost of gas, as manual transmission cars can be easier on gas. Here in the United States most teens of driving age learn on automatic transmission cars due to them being the most readily available car to drive, but having your teen learn manual transmission can become helpful as they start to go out on their own. Fans of a manual transmission car say that their manual cars let them be more engaged with driving, they are more attuned to what their car mechanics are doing, the vehicle can be better on gas mileage and they are just fun to drive. But, there are some important benefits for you and your children learning how to drive a manual, or stick shift, car! 1. Never get stranded: Having the knowledge to drive a manual car allows you to be able to borrow a car or drive yourself and others home if needed. Knowing how to drive a car with a stick shift will keep your child safe and be able to get home in any situation. 2. Rental options: Being able to drive a manual transmission allows you to have more options when needing to rent a car if inventory is low. 3. Traveling abroad: Renting cars during family vacations or study-abroad opportunities will be much easier when knowing how to drive a manual.

4. Jobs: If your child has the opportunity to valet at a local hotel, restaurant or work at a car dealership, knowing

32

FOLLOW THESE STEPS FROM POPULAR MECHANICS TO BEGIN: 1. Start in neutral: Before you start the ignition, check which gear the transmission is in. If it's anything other than neutral, hold the clutch pedal all the way in, put the car in neutral, and let go of the clutch pedal. 2. Release the parking brake, and start the car with your foot holding down the brake pedal.

GETTING FAMILIAR WITH THE PEDALS how to drive a manual is a must.

brake

5. Join the club: Maybe not a benefit, more gas clutch of a perk. As reported by the U.S. News and World Report, only 18% of Americans can drive a manual transmission. Driversed.com says that is just under one-fifth of American drivers. That’s a pretty awesome club to join.

6. Attentive Driving: According to driversed.com, learning to drive a manual car makes you a more attentive driver. You need two feet, two hands and need to pay close attention to road conditions, as more is involved overall with manual driving. So, how do you or your teen learn to drive manual transmission, aka driving stick shift? 1. Find an experienced manual driver to sit in the passenger seat with you. 2. Find a manual car to practice on.

3. Find an open parking lot on flat terrain with a lot of open space. 4. Take a deep breath and channel your inner Yogi.

GIGGLEMAGAZINE.COM | APRIL/MAY 2021

3. Once you release the parking brake, push the clutch all the way in and hold it there. Keep your right foot on the brake, and move the shifter into first gear. Lift the clutch pedal— slowly. This is called letting out the clutch. 4. The friction point is when you want to start applying the accelerator. This means that your feet are going to move in opposite directions at the same time, pushing the gas as you're letting out the clutch. NOTE: If you let out the clutch too fast or don't give it enough throttle, the car will buck. 5. Going from first to second, and so on, requires the same set of steps. 6. When you're coming up to a stop, push the clutch in, move the shifter to neutral, and let the clutch out. When going neutral, you don't need to feel for a friction point or apply gas. Just let the pedal go. Press brake as needed. 7. A manual transmission car doesn't have a gear called "park" like an automatic does. That means you must put the parking brake on when you park the car. 8. To park a manual, turn the engine off and keep holding the brake pedal in. Once you put the parking brake on, you can let up on the brake pedal. 9. Practice, practice, practice! (Once you got the basics down, you will learn how to downshift and park on hills.)

6 steps to

Quickly Organize Those Outgrown Baby Clothes BY HELEN KORNBLUM AND NICOLE IRVING

While nesting, you filled your little ones closet to the max with adorable onesies, itsy-bitsy shoes and 321 mini outfits that screamed photo moment! Now, your baby is a very busy one-year-old and their closest is bursting at the seams. It’s time to get to spring cleaning and get your toddlers closest under control.

START BY EMPTYING THE ENTIRE CLOSET

It’s time to purge! Throw away items that are in poor condition and set aside clothing that you want to donate to friends or agencies in the community. Don’t forget the shoes, socks, hair bows and jackets/snowsuits. Make sure to also sort any family heirlooms and set aside for your siblings or items to be passed down to your children. You wouldn’t want to accidentally discard them.

SORT BY SIZE

Now you’re ready to sort by size, which requires close attention because infant and toddler clothing is not standardized. One brand labeled 3-6 month might be another’s 6-9 month.

SORT EACH SIZE BY TYPE OR SEASONS

Giggle Tip: Need more space, consider installing tension rods to add more levels for hanging storage in the closet or armoire.

Separate specialty clothing such as swimwear, holiday outfits or costumes. To make the next size up easily accessible, hang these items in the closet, separated from the current wardrobe by clothing dividers. Dividers are useful for organizing the current clothing, too. You can buy blank dividers and write on them or buy specialty labels. Check online and in children’s specialty shops for various options.

PLACE IN PLASTIC BINS Put the remaining clothing into clear plastic bins with large labels on the front and side, not on the top, so you can still identify the contents when the bins are stacked. Use vacuum storage bags for larger sizes or when storage space is limited. Slide plastic containers under a bed or where you have the best storage space. Babies and toddlers grow quickly, but once you have a system in place, you’ll be able to keep up with their expanding wardrobes.

Should I Go to a Homeschool Conference This Year? BY CRYSTAL LADWIG, PH.D.

Homeschool conference season starts each year in May and typically runs through August. Last year, homeschoolers across the country were disappointed when conferences were cancelled. Homeschool conferences aren’t like other conferences. They’re family events where children and parents often attend together, with specially planned events for co-op leaders, parents, grandparents, and kids. They’re family vacations. They’re pep rallies. They reenergize homeschooling parents and kids to get them ready for the next year.

NEARBY CONFERENCES The nation’s biggest homeschool conference is held in Orlando each May during the Memorial Day weekend. The annual conference of the Florida Parent Educator’s Association (FPEA) will be held May 27-29 at the Rosen Shingle Creek. Thursday activities focus on homeschooling leaders as sessions help co-op leaders create supportive groups that meet the needs of their members. Friday and Saturday will include dozens of sessions each day. Special activities include the annual teen and children’s programs, a youth leadership summit, as well as art and music classes. FPEA celebrates graduating seniors with a formal graduation ceremony to close out the weekend. Great Homeschool Conventions’ Florida conference is scheduled for July 22-24 in Jacksonville at the Prime F. Osborn Convention Center. The event includes 2 1/2 days of exhibits and workshops on homeschooling topics as well as parenting, preparing for college, specific homeschool approaches, information about teaching specific subjects and homeschooling “special needs & gifted children.”

When you go to a homeschool conference, you’ll have the opportunity to attend sessions on how to homeschool, how to teach different ages and subjects, and how to teach kids of all ability levels. You’ll get lost in the vendor hall as you explore more curricular options than you knew existed. Most conferences also include family events that allow you and your kids to hang out and enjoy your time together and with other homeschoolers. One of the best reasons to attend a homeschool conference is to get your hands on curricula. Instead of simply looking at ads, you can get your hands on the books and materials you want for your children. They can come and help you pick out curricula and materials that interest and challenge them. Best of all, there are often significant savings on curricula offered through homeschool conferences.

40

IS IT SAFE? The 2020 homeschool season was like no other. Some conferences were cancelled completely. Others went virtual. This year will include a mix of different options, with a variety of in-person and virtual conferences. Like other events, they’ll still look different than usual. In-person conferences will encourage (and possibly require) participants to wear masks. Seating will be different as additional space will be available for social distancing. Sanitizer will be everywhere. Ultimately, you need to decide for yourself if the safety measures taken by an individual group meet your family’s needs.

GIGGLEMAGAZINE.COM | APRIL/MAY 2021

For anyone who prefers to attend online, Great Homeschool Conventions also offers an online conference from August 1 through December 31 where registrants can attend workshops, listen to speakers and visit a virtual vendor hall to learn more about curricula and receive discounts. IT’S TIME TO DECIDE With registrations already open, it’s time to decide if you will attend a homeschool conference this year and if you will attend in person or virtually. They’re a great way to support others, educate yourself, revive yourself after a long year, and get your hands on those materials. Not to mention...we all love discounts, right?

Amber Matts Why were you inspired to teach? I had some pretty amazing teachers growing up and I have always loved learning. I always wanted to know the who, what, where, when and whys of everything. I hope to instill the same in my students. I express to them that my job isn’t to just teach them 3rd grade standards and curriculum, my job is to teach them to be kind and helpful human beings as well. We do Yoga and Mindfulness activities daily to help them learn how to identify and manage their emotions. As well as to help work through said emotions if necessary. It is amazing what children can do when given the tools and opportunity to do so.

WHERE DO YOU TEACH? Healthy Learning Academy (HLA). We are a tuition free, Alachua County Public Charter School located in Newberry.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN A TEACHER? 11 Years - All of them at HLA WHAT SUBJECT DO YOU TEACH? All

Do you know a teacher who goes above and beyond for his students? An administrator who is truly devoted to making her school a better place? Giggle Magazine wants to know! GIGGLEMAGAZINE.COM | APRIL/MAY 2021

Every part of my day here at HLA is my favorite! It really was too difficult to choose just one. I have an extraordinary group of students who have had to overcome so many changes this year because of Covid. I love how my students are excited and eager to learn when walking through the door each day. I especially love how sweet and kind they are. Even while handing tests out, they are thanking me and smiling.

How has being digital affected your teaching style? Share your feelings and how digital teaching has been going. What do you miss most about being in the classroom daily if you are teaching digitally?

I currently have 11 in class students and seven digital students. I teach them at the same time throughout the day. I started the year with six in class students and 12 digital students. Digital teaching has changed my teaching style immensely in that I am not able to let my students be as hands on as I usually am. Our COVID cleaning protocols and such have made it near impossible for students to learn this way. Safety is my number one priority though, so we follow the guidelines given to us line by line.

child sat on an exercise ball instead of a chair. This year we have had to resort to stools and while they are not chairs, they are still not as flexible as the exercise balls. Research has shown that children who use exercise balls as chairs have increased gains in concentration, on-task behaviors and show improved academic achievements. Students also build body strength in the health aspect of learning. I cannot wait to bring flexible seating back into my classroom when I am able to do so.

I am a huge believer in hands-on learning. I feel students learn more quickly as well as retain more information when they are allotted a kinesthetic approach to learning. Of course my visual/auditory learners are getting what they need as well through these activities and more. Unfortunately, we haven’t been able to do as many hands on activities as I would like to do, but we are slowly and carefully starting to introduce them as the year progresses.

In regard to teaching digitally, I have been very fortunate to have such amazing families on the receiving end of digital learning! It is a huge team effort, and I couldn’t do any of this without the help and support from my “teachers assistants”. While it is still very time consuming to recreate tests and assignments via Google Classroom, it has been working very smoothly. It was a huge learning experience for me, but I feel things are going as smooth as can be. Of course, there are hiccups every once in a while, but again, my students and their families have been very patient and understanding.

Prior to this year, I usually had flexible seating options in my classroom. Each

WHAT GRADE/AGE DO YOU TEACH? 3rd Grade

!

What is your favorite part of the school day?

Do you have a favorite assignment/project that you typically assign your students? We do a lot of STEM/ STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Mathematics) activities in my class. I LOVE project based learning in that students are presented with a problem, and they have to come up with their own solutions. I always remind my students that there are a million different ways to solve a problem. So, show me yours! We also have weekly correspondence with our amazing “pen pal” Trucker Buddy. My classes have been writing letters to our Trucker Buddy for the last seven years. We have learned so many amazing facts about the United States and the students love sharing information with Trucker Buddy that they have learned in class.

What do you like to do outside of teaching? Drag racing, boating, enjoying time with my family and relaxing at home.

Share a funny teaching moment/day! I welcome you to visit any elementary classroom on any particular day. There are sure to be funny moments each and every day! Probably multiple within the day. So for me, there are WAAYYYYYY too many great memories to list. There honestly is never a dull moment.

Which superpower would you want if you were a superhero? If I were a superhero, I would want the ability to control time. There just isn't enough time in a day! Also, my 4 year old son is growing up way too fast and I would love to be able to slow that down as well. On the contrary, it would also be fun to sort of speed through some other moments in life.

What is your favorite book? Whatever book that is my son’s current favorite as we will be snuggled up together reading it.

Anything else you would like to share? Again, I would like to thank all of my 3rd grade families for the amount of support they have given me. I also want to ask anybody reading this to please thank your child’s teacher! This teacher appreciates YOU (the parent) and all of the teachers going above and beyond this year. This has been an unprecedented year to say the least, and at times like this showing gratitude to others is truly important. As we all know, it takes a village to raise a child, so make sure everybody in your village feels supported and appreciated. Thank you again!

Summer Camp Season: 2021 Edition

It’s a brand new summer, let’s be prepared for all the fun to be had! BY NICOLE IRVING

It’s summertime and that means time for slip and sliding, ice cream and every kid’s favorite activity… attending summer camp! While we are beginning to open back up and resume some sort or normalcy, things aren’t quite back to where we left off in 2019 when it comes to our kids, school and camps. And with many of our kids having been enrolled in digital school this past year, this year’s summer camp experience may be the first time they have been physically around kids in a group setting in a while.

Here are some simple steps to ease them, and you, back into (safe) summer time fun.

Know what they want to do

Don’t overschedule

Many of our children didn’t get to engage in their favorite activities this school year, so it’s important that they get to have a say in what they want to spend their summer doing. Before presenting options to them, choose what will work best for your schedule and budget, keeping in mind what you know about your kiddos likes and dislikes.

This is important for all kids, but especially this year. Our kids have been under an absorbent amount of stress, both socially and academically. They have transitioned in so many ways through the school year, so easing them into a fun summer schedule is key, allowing them downtime for sleep and relaxation is important.

Make those social connections When scheduling camps, ask their friends parent’s if and when they are attending the same camps. See if you can align schedules. This will for sure make them happy and help to continue building relationships with their friends before the new school year.

Ask lots of questions

Mask up

Once you have chosen your camps, make sure you ask as many questions prior to enrolling them as you can. This way, you and your kiddos will know what to expect and are fully prepared and comfortable with new arrangements, accommodations and requirements. Some camps might require masks and certain protocols to follow, so make sure you know all the ins and outs. In addition, ask about their COVID-19 protocol if you or anyone in your family becomes sick. Will you be refunded? Can you change the dates? Every camp will be different, know their policies.

If your children have attended home school or distance learning, they may not have had to wear a mask for long periods of time. This can be a new experience for them if they haven’t been used to it. If the camp they will be attending requires them to wear a mask for the duration of the time they are there, you may want to start practicing now to get them used to wearing it. In addition, finding one that is comfortable for them in the Florida heat is important.

Articulate your expectations We all know that when our kids leave our sight, that anything can and will happen. But, it is especially important for you to articulate your expectations in regards to safety protocols when it comes to sanitizing, masks, social distancing etc. while they are at summer camp. Every family has different levels of comfortability, so expressing to your kids what your levels are when they go to summer camp, and how to respect others will help make the summer camp experience fun and enjoyable for all.

Can You Really Kick Start Labor at Home? BY LINDSEY JOHNSON, MS, MCHES

The final weeks of pregnancy can feel like an endless game of waiting. Expectant mothers may be physically uncomfortable and anxious to meet their baby. As the due date approaches, parents wonder if there is anything they can do to speed up the process. Here are some common solutions and the verdict on each.

NIPPLE STIMULATION

Some women have sought out acupuncture, the insertion of tiny needles into pressure points, or acupressure, the application of pressure to these specific points, as a way to induce labor. This theory assumes that applying pressure to certain parts of the body causes the uterus to contract, thus spurring labor. A randomized trial by Andersen et al. (2013) did not show that acupuncture helped reduce the need for induction in women at 41 weeks gestation. A systematic review by Smith et al. (2013) and a study by Schlaeger et al. (2017) showed that acupuncture did show some additional cervical ripening when compared to a control group. Schlaeger et al. (2017) did not find any cervical ripening by the use of acupressure. All studies cautioned that there is not enough data yet to understand implications for clinical practice.

In studies by Demirel and Guler (2015) as well as Kavanagh et al. (2005), researchers found that nipple stimulation is effective in helping induce labor. Stimulating the breast also releases oxytocin which spurs uterine contractions and signals your breasts to prepare for lactation. Nipple stimulation has also been associated with a lower incidence of postpartum hemorrhage.

Verdict: It is unlikely that acupuncture or acupressure on its own will induce labor. There are stress and pain relief benefits from these complementary therapies but seek permission from your provider before you go this route.

PINEAPPLE This tropical fruit contains an enzyme called bromelain which is sometimes used to move the bowels. According to the Cleveland Clinic, since the intestines are situated next to the uterus, contracting bowels may irritate the uterus and cause it to start contracting also.

Verdict: There is not enough research to determine the effectiveness of eating pineapple as a way to jump start labor. However, eating this juicy fruit can help you stay hydrated and give you a nice boost of vitamin C, manganese and fiber.

Verdict: With your provider’s permission and recommended timing, you may stimulate your nipples to prepare for childbirth. Some women also choose to use a breast pump.

* Always check with your doctor before trying to start labor at home

ACUPUNCTURE AND ACUPRESSURE

WALKING While studies have not found definitive evidence that walking helps get labor started, the experts at What to Expect state that the act of walking uses gravity and the swaying of your hips to help move the baby into position for delivery. The pressure in your pelvis may help prime the cervix for labor. Certified Nurse Midwife Jessica Costa, MSN, APRN, CNM from the Cleveland Clinic recommends that her patients walk 30 minutes daily to help build endurance and prepare the body for labor. If you have already experienced contractions and are in active labor, walking may help speed the process.

Verdict: If your provider has given you the green light, there is no harm in walking. It can help get your body ready for the demands of labor and provide exercise and stress relief until then.

SEX There are many reasons that sex may help spark labor. According to Healthline, having an orgasm releases oxytocin, which can trigger uterine contractions. Semen also contains prostaglandin hormones, which help ripen the cervix and prepare for childbirth.

Verdict: If your provider says sex is a safe option for you,

it is worth a try. It also provides an opportunity to connect with your partner before the baby comes.

Two Convenient Locations: There are many methods that expectant mothers have tried to spur labor. While empirical evidence does not necessarily provide an easy button, some of these methods may be worth trying since they have other benefits as well. Check with your provider before attempting any possible labor induction method to ensure it is safe for you and your baby. Take a deep breath and try to enjoy the final weeks of pregnancy. During surgery, we open up the growth plate that has been closed and restore the normal shape of the skull.”

Craniosynostosis: What Does it Mean for My Child?

By performing this surgery early, it is less likely that serious complications occur, Ching said.

BY TRACY WRIGHT

According to the CDC "the causes of craniosynostosis in most infants are unknown. Some babies have a craniosynostosis because of changes in their genes. In some cases, craniosynostosis occurs because of an abnormality in a single gene, which can cause a genetic syndrome. However, in most cases, craniosynostosis is thought to be caused by a combination of genes and other factors, such as things the mother comes in contact with in her environment, or what the mother eats or drinks, or certain medications she uses during pregnancy.” While the causes of the condition are mostly unknown, it is important to ensure it is diagnosed and treated properly. “Well child checks are essential where healthy growth is tracked and normal milestones are assessed,” Ching said. “The pediatrician will monitor head circumference at every appointment and will notice if it starts to trend in an unusual trajectory.”

The first two years of a child’s life are critical in physical and mental growth and development. We celebrate all types of milestones, but parents need to be aware of conditions that may inhibit growth in areas like the brain. A common condition to be aware of is craniosynostosis. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), one out of every 2,500 babies is born with craniosynostosis. This condition occurs when the bones in a baby’s head close prematurely before the brain is fully formed. This, in turn, affects the space that the brain has to grow which can result in developmental delays, neurological conditions, headaches, blinding and nausea.

Local mom Brandi Strode noticed a ridge on her daughter’s forehead at 4 months and consulted a neurosurgeon who chose a “wait and see” approach until a second lump formed at 15 months. After an MRI and CT scan, they found all of her daughter’s sutures (the joints that connect the bones of the skull), had sealed early and she was diagnosed with multi-suture craniosynostosis. Luckily, she has had no developmental or neurological issues. Her 18-month-old daughter recently underwent surgery at UF Health for the condition. She will have to wear a helmet for protection

Many cases of craniosynostosis are diagnosed soon after birth or within the first six months of life though some can be found later on. Sometimes parents may find that there is an odd shape or the loss of the soft spot on their baby’s head. Pediatricians will often then refer children to specialists like those at the University of Florida Health Craniofacial Center. Depending on the age of the child, different treatment options are available.

or learning and behavior issues. That is why the UF Health Craniofacial Center follows their patients to adolescence to regularly assess them for any issues they may have.

“Take a breath. It is a scary process, but your child will surprise you with how resilient he or she is. The neurosurgeons and plastic surgeons do amazing work,” Strode said. “I joined a Facebook group called Cranio Kids and was able to learn so much. There is also a non-profit group called Cranio Care Bears who will send a care package for child and parent while in the hospital. I highly recommend both.”

“The key for care for children with craniosynostosis is making sure they receive care in a full-fledged craniofacial center with multidisciplinary care teams, which include pediatric neurosurgeons and plastic surgeons, so that the proper treatment plan can be developed for each child with adequate follow up care,” said Lance Governale, M.D., FAANS, FAAP, chief of pediatric neurosurgery and the L.D. Hupp Associate Professor of Neurosurgery and Pediatrics. “This can help to ensure each child with this diagnosis can have the best possible outcome.”

For those children with craniosynostosis, most will recover fully with no issues. However, they are at a higher risk for subtle delays

SIGNS OF CR ANIOSYNOSTOSIS Typically, the first sign of craniosynostosis is an abnormally shaped skull. Other signs may include:

• No “soft spot” on the baby’s skull • A raised firm edge where the sutures closed early

• Slow growth or no growth in the baby’s head size over time *Information provided by the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention

Helping a Child Who Stutters BY TRACY WRIGHT

Speech is a major milestone for toddlers, but oftentimes there are setbacks in reaching full fluency of speech. One of these issues may be stuttering when the speech is disrupted. There are different types of the condition, but the one that mostly affects toddlers is developmental stuttering, which occurs between the ages of 2 and 5. “Some amount of stuttering is common in children ages 2 to 5 years old while developing early speech and language skills, and will typically resolve itself without intervention,” said Amy Tomlinson, CCC, SLP, speech language pathologist and founding director of Fundamentals Therapy. “Stuttering may persist throughout childhood and into adulthood when speech and language skills are not developed adequately to form and communicate thoughts fluently. This is known as developmental stuttering. Why do some children stutter? There is no one single reason— rather, there may be a variety of factors that cause the condition. Different factors may include speech and language processing, motor control, physiology, genetics and personality, said Lauren Meffen MA CCC/SLP, CLT, speech language pathologist and owner of Wildflower Therapy. Stuttering is part of a larger role of language fluency. Fluency is an organized ability to communicate our prosody, rhythm and speech to communicate our intent and message to a listener. “Fluency that is effortless and communicated as ease includes a string of sounds with a rapid rate of speech, free of pauses, hesitations and continuity,” Meffen said. “If there is a disruption in the fluency either the intent to communicate or the formulation and statement of the code/child’s speech we may hear/see a dysfluency. A dysfluency can be considered stuttering when there is a breakdown in the child’s motor plan to speak.” Different types of disfluencies may include repetition of sounds or words, an elongated or prolonged sound or a pause without sounds. When parents find that their child is stuttering while trying to communicate, the best option is to visit their pediatrician and consider next options for therapy. Usually this will mean consulting with a licensed speech language pathologist who can develop a thorough individualized case history, evaluate environmental factors, evaluate development of speech and language as well as motor planning assessments. “A speech language pathologist will look at all aspects of child communication and development including the expressive/ receptive skills and phonological processes to help determine the best plan of treatment,” Meffen said. “A therapist will counsel and guide the family as well as the child on strategies. Treatment of stuttering not only includes the child but also the caregivers and family members to aid in minimizing any unintentional interruptions and decrease the anxiety associated with speaking.” GIGGLEMAGAZINE.COM | APRIL/MAY 2021

c2c | toddler Local mom Jessica Nuzzi’s two-and-ahalf-year-old son has a slight stutter, and she understands the important role that parents and caregivers play with having patience with their children. “We can understand most things because we are around him all day. He talks a lot for his age. His dad and grandpa both have a stutter too,” Nuzzi said. “We tell him ‘it’s ok, take your time’ and to not rush him on it. Sometimes we try and help him with what he is trying to say, but he usually responds better to us just being patient and waiting for him to get out what he’s trying to say.”

Treatment of stuttering not only includes the child but also the caregivers and family members to aid in minimizing any unintentional interruptions and decrease the anxiety associated with speaking. — LAUREN MEFFEN MA CCC/SLP, CLT

Although they have not pursued therapy yet, Nuzzi will do so if he continues with the condition past his third birthday. “I would love for him to have confidence growing up, and I don’t want his speech to impact that,” Nuzzi said. Unfortunately, the adverse conditions to stuttering can play out in self-esteem and anxiety for a child. The Mayo Clinic points out several complications of stuttering including problems communicating with others, being anxious about speaking, not speaking or avoiding situations that require speaking, loss of social, school, or work participation and success, being bullied or teased and low self-esteem.

Meffen also points to physical side effects like an increased respiratory rate, tense voice, increased fast rates of speech, some tension physically that results in tremor excessive movement and rhythmic movement during speech. Parents with children who stutter should not feel hopeless. An individualized treatment plan with a speech language pathologist can greatly help your child. According to the St. Louis Children’s Hospital, early treatment can prevent stuttering from continuing into adulthood, and different techniques are used to teach your child skills that can help him or her speak without stuttering.

“Treatment with your speech pathologist includes parental counseling with feedback on your child’s fluency patterns as well as evaluating any environmental factors that can increase the occurrences of dysfluencies. The speech pathologist will work closely with the child and the parent to develop a positive routine and teach tools such as waiting for a response from your child and guiding them in periods of frustration,” Meffen said.

TIPS FOR PARENTS TO HELP CHILDREN AT HOME Fundamental Therapy’s Amy Tomlison has recommendations for some of the best ways to help your child manage stuttering: • Talk openly to your child about his/her speech • Discuss or read about others who stutter • Reduce your speech rate and encourage your child to do the same • Pay attention when he/she speaks and don't interrupt • Educated friends, family and teachers to create safe environments • Let your child know they are accepted and supported

When the Baby is No Longer the Baby: Tips for Transitioning them into Becoming an Older Sibling BY LINDSEY JOHNSON, MS, MCHES

Adding a new member to the family is a big transition for older children. They sometimes feel left out or question their place in the new family dynamic. It is a time of change for the whole family but there are some tactics to employ that may help ease the uncertainty. Delay Other Major Changes

A new baby is a major disruption to the daily routine and family flow. This will take a period of adjustment for all family members. This is not the ideal time to make other major changes such as introducing potty training, transitioning to a toddler bed, starting daycare for the first time, or taking away the pacifier. If you are ready to make these changes, it might be best to do it as far as possible before the birth of the baby or wait a few months after the baby's arrival.

Involve Older Children in Preparations and Care

Nemours Children’s Health System recommends involving older children in the preparations for the new baby. Allowing them to help make decisions about the nursery, providing input on the name, or if possible, attending a prenatal appointment or ultrasound can help them feel included. Mayo Clinic also suggests enrolling in a sibling class at the hospital, preparing your child for their arrangements when the baby arrives, and explaining to them that new babies spend most of their time crying, sleeping, and eating.

Create Special Time with Older Children

When the new baby arrives, parents will be inundated with newborn care. However, it is very important to create some special time with older children so they feel included. Enlist help from family and friends to watch the baby for a short time so you can create a new memory with your older children. Also utilize your support network to help with care for your older child. Keep in mind that your children crave your attention so carving out time dedicated solely to them, regardless of activity, will speak volumes to them.

TIPS FROM TH E TRENCH ES Local parents share some of their tried and true approaches for introducing a new member to the family!

Jeremy Clements, father of Jonny 12, Emma 10, Lucas 6, and Andrew 3, shares how they introduced the new babies to their older children. “We started conditioning our children for the arrival of a baby brother/sister early on. We talked about how their mother's belly was growing and how they were once in there too, which was mind blowing for them, in a good way. Every week we would look at the progress on Babycenter.com and tell the kids how big the baby was, which was exciting for them. We encouraged them to touch their mom's belly and talk to the baby. We included them in announcing to the world that they were going to be a big brother/sister and we let them feel like they were a part of the process by letting them have input in the final selection of names, getting special toys just from them and giving them special tasks they could do to help take care of their baby. I think communicating with the kids and incorporating them into the process was very important for their acceptance of the changes,” says Clements.

Teneill Russell, mother of Pepper 11, Lincoln 9, and Lucia 6, states, “My kids loved having a baby in the house. I tried to have my older kid(s) be involved in decisions when possible. For example, my son picked out what color carseat to get for my youngest. My oldest picked out the clothes that her baby sister wore home from the hospital. She was also able to spend a couple hours alone at the hospital with the baby and I, just us three girls. Six years later, she still remembers that as being really special. We also tried to make sure the older kids weren’t feeling neglected. My husband spent extra time with them the first few months, in part to give the baby and I some peace and quiet but also to help them feel loved, wanted, and to have fun.” The most important thing to consider when adding a new family member is to make sure older children feel involved. It is also critical to make sure that they feel their place in the family is not threatened. Quality time is the most effective way to ensure a smooth transition to the new family dynamic.

How to Set Family House Rules for the Kids! BY NICOLE IRVING

After you arrive home from the hospital with a newborn, the last thing you are probably worried about is establishing a set of house rules. However, it is not too early for you and Daddyto-be to start brainstorming what kind of rules you want to set in place for your family before the new baby comes. Your family rules may evolve as you become a more experienced parent and when siblings come along. If you didn’t have time to fit this in while you were pregnant, it’s not too late. Here are a few tips to consider when coming up with your family rules for your kids! THE RULES: A more appropriate name for house rules may be family rules because these rules should guide a family’s behavior no matter where they are. The rules let all members of the family know what is expected of them. You can make the rules cover just about as much or as little as you want. Outlining your family rules is putting your family values into action. Perhaps one of the best things about family rules is that they apply to everyone in the family, not just the kiddos. INVOLVE THE CHILDREN: When it’s time to discuss the rules with your children, it is important to make it clear that the family rules apply inside the house as well as when they go to their

friends’ houses, school, the grocery store, church and anywhere else they may go. Your children represent your entire family wherever they go and they should always remember their rules. Don’t forget to discuss examples of behavior that is acceptable and what is not for each rule. KEEP THEM SIMPLE: Too many rules may be hard for your children to remember. Of course, you can also include a few fun rules, like if your children, or Dad, want to eat a donut for breakfast, they have to drink a tall glass of milk first! CONSEQUENCES FOR BREAKING THE RULES: The consequences (as well as rewards) can be linked to the rules. Older children can even help determine appropriate consequences when someone breaks the rules. POST THE RULES: You can simply type them up and post them around the house. Make posting a family affair! Have the kids write them in their own handwriting and put them in a frame. You can even ask them where they want to hang them on the wall. Another fun idea is to pick a wall somewhere in your house to paint with chalkboard paint. Use chalk to write out the rules. TELL PEOPLE ABOUT YOUR RULES: Discuss your rules with babysitters and caregivers and make sure the children know that you did.

Here are some ideas to get you started: • Always tell the truth • Be kind and show respect to everyone • Encourage and support your brothers and sisters • Turn the TV off during meals • Always be thankful and show your appreciation • When the doorbell rings, all children sit on the couch; only adults answer the door • Put things back where they belong while you sing the clean up song • Do what is asked, the first time it is asked of you • Always say please and thank you

When Should Your Child Be Allowed to Do Things on Their Own?

Yale School of Medicine advises parents to turn to parenting books and even discuss the matter with your child’s pediatrician, but says to trust your

judgment. Base your decisions on how independent your child is or how well he or she follows rules.

BY JULIANNA SPENCE

From birth to adulthood, you teach your child to be polite, respectful and responsible. They answer with “yes, ma’am” and “no, sir.” They say please and thank you and you teach them not to talk to strangers or engage in activities that could put them in harm's way. Now, let’s set the scene: Your child is playing outside with some friends when approached by a stranger who offers them ice cream and a tour on the truck. Your child hesitates, but then they cave in and steps inside the truck. Or maybe your child receives a text message in class with answers to a test. They read the message and then mark down the answers. At that moment, you realize that everything you’ve taught them has gone out the window. Are they ready to go out on their own? Normally, between the ages of 8-12, tweens start to pull away from their parents and want more freedom. So, how do you know when your child is ready for more independence and you can trust they’ll make the right decisions when you aren’t by their side? According to the U.S. Department of Education, there is no right age for children to be allowed to do things on their own; rather, it is about responsibility and maturity. The Department of Education advises that parents set limits, are clear when they speak, give reasonable choices, give independence in stages, guide (but resist the temptation to control), let kids make mistakes and make their actions have consequences. The best way to give your child independence is to take baby steps. Yale School of Medicine says if your child wants to walk to a friend's house, walk with them the first time. Then, walk them halfway until you feel comfortable letting them go themselves. Another solution is to test your child. Go to the store with them and allow them to look at the toy aisle when they ask. Check on them to see if that is where they really went. Take small steps until you, and they, are comfortable with the new freedoms they are asking for.

Letting go is a tough process for parents. You’re always questioning when your son is old enough to play outside, when your daughter is allowed to have sleepovers and when your child can go to the mall with friends. Yale School of Medicine advises parents to turn to parenting books and even discuss the matter with your child’s pediatrician, but says to trust your judgment. Base your decisions on how independent your child is or how well he or she follows rules. At the end of the day, you know your child and their level of maturity best and go with your parenting instincts, they usually are right.

The Dating Game:

“ We told our son, who

is 14, that if he wanted to date he had to have my husband or me there, or he could have a group of six or more friends there. He chose us. ” - Donna L.

Is Your Teen Ready? BY LISA KATZ

“ I tell my 14-year-old

The teenage years can be some of the best years in a person’s life. During this time, your child may find a best friend, explore a newfound talent or even fall in love for the first time. LOVE AND CRUSHES During these formative years, it is beneficial for your teenager to begin to understand the difference between love and having a crush. To be fair, this understanding is sometimes difficult to comprehend even as an adult. Love is a deep feeling that develops over time. When you are in love, you want to be there through all of the good and the bad times. You are physically attracted to each other and emotionally committed. You are supportive and considerate of each other’s feelings. Love is also working as a team to get through difficult situations and then wanting to celebrate any victories … together. Having a crush on someone can also be an exciting time. You want to spend all of your time together but usually only for the fun times. Having a crush often recognizes that person as being “perfect,”and that ideal image can often lead to only seeing the good in someone and none of the flaws. Having a crush is often just being in love with love or what you think love is or could be. INTO THE DATING WORLD So when do you allow your teen to start exploring those love vs. crush feelings and begin dating? As you would imagine, every parent has a different opinion. Talk openly with your own children about their thoughts as well as your personal, parental expectations. We understand that every child matures at a slightly different age. A 15-year-old girl may be more mature and ready to date while a 16-year-old boy isn’t even close to being ready for such a responsibility. Often, parents will start their teen’s dating process in steps by allowing their 14-year-old to only go out on “group dates.” Kids are typically fine with that restriction at this stage. Many parents feel 16 is a better, more mature age to begin actual dating. “One-on-one dates should probably wait until age 16 or even 17, depending on the maturity of the teen, and your assessment of the

date in question,” suggests Mary Waldon, a licensed clinical social worker. BUILDING BLOCKS Being in different types of relationships will help to mold your child’s perception of friendships and love for years to come. Dr. Brenda Schaeffer, psychologist and author of “Love or Addiction: The Power and Peril of Teen Sex and Romance,” views teen dating as a pivotal time. “The thing is, during adolescence, dating is a dress rehearsal for adult relationships,” explains Dr. Schaeffer. While one never knows how long a teenage love or crush will last, understand that it will feel very real to your child. Take your teen seriously and do not mock his feelings. This is a huge learning time in your teen’s life. Your teen needs you right now… even if he thinks he doesn’t. Be a pillar of support, and be open to questions and conversations as your teen ventures into the sometimes scary but wonderful world of love.

daughter that whenever she starts dating, I’m going to tell the young man that everything he does to her I will do to him. You know, kissing, hugging, whatever. ” - Andy L.

“ I tell my daughter to

remember that boys have feelings too and think about how her brother feels when a girl plays games. It's better to be straightforward. When our son started dating at 16, I felt like it was a new phase and exciting. I also hoped I’d like the girl! ” - Gena B.

“ For dating, our rule was not until age 16 and there were many restrictions. I had to know what time things were beginning and ending, where they were at all times and which friends they were with. Who you are with can have a big influence too. Sometimes I snuck around to check on them. They never even knew it!” - Vickie C.

Big Brothers Big Sisters Returns to Alachua County BY LINDSEY JOHNSON, MS, MCHES AND JASMYN COPELAND

Jasmyn Copeland is the Alachua County Program Director for Big Brothers Big Sisters. Copeland has been a proud Gainesville resident for over twentyfive years. She and her husband, Drew Copeland, from the band Sister Hazel, have three children, two who still attend public schools here in Alachua County.

Mental health concerns, isolation and poverty have existed in our area for a long time. Along came COVID, which amplified these social problems, particularly among the most vulnerable in our community. With the uncertainty and change in school processes, many children have been heavily impacted, making the need for mentorship greater than ever. Luckily, the Big Brothers Big Sisters organization has returned to Alachua County to serve youth ages five to thirteen. Big Brothers Big Sisters pairs children with adverse needs with mentors. The organization refers to these mentors as “Bigs” and the children as “Littles.” The nonprofit organization has been around for over 100 years, successfully making matches and changing the trajectory of children’s lives, one child and one match at a time. The children enrolled in the program statistically make academic gains, improve social skills and have an overall better mental health outlook. The volunteers enrolled in the program have a better sense of community and a greater feeling of joy.

Copeland states that the requirements to become a volunteer are “To have a heart to want to give back.” She went on to say, “Many of us have had someone mentor us at one point in our lives. It might have looked like a teacher going the extra mile, a coach being willing to have the difficult conversation or a relative stepping in when help was needed. Big Brothers Big Sisters is looking for people who want to pay it forward.” There are two different programs children and volunteers can enroll in: community and site-based. Currently, the organization

In closing, Copeland said, “In an era where we are bombarded with ways we can fill our time, it’s so important to make sure we are choosing the greater portion. I feel it is important to ask ourselves what we want to be remembered for. How will we have made a difference when our time is up? I believe we answer for the ways we spend our time. And ironically, when we invest in someone else, we too gain from the experience exponentially.” One of Copeland’s favorite quotes is by Winston Churchill: “We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give.” Copeland and the staff and volunteers at Big Brothers Big Sisters give back to our children in a way that has ripple effects throughout our community. This program teaches children about mentorship and having a trusted, caring adult outside of the family to help guide them through the ups and downs of life.

is only enrolling in their community-based program, which allows the volunteer and the child to go out in the community and enjoy all that it has to offer. For this program, volunteers typically spend roughly 8-10 hours with a child monthly. Copeland anticipates being able to enroll for the sitebased program in the fall. This program will allow volunteers and children to meet at a location, such as schools and after-school facilities.
