Miss Saigon

Wed 17 January to Sat 17 February Festival Theatre

Cameron Mackintosh’s acclaimed new production of Boublil and Schönberg’s legendary musical Miss Saigon comes to Edinburgh. A recent smash hit in the West End and currently playing on Broadway, this epic production with a company of 60 lands at the Festival Theatre this January. In the last days of the Vietnam War, 17 year-old Kim is forced to work in a Saigon bar run by a notorious character known as the Engineer. There she meets and falls in love with an American GI named Chris but they are torn apart by the fall of Saigon. For 3 years Kim goes on an epic journey of survival to find her way back to Chris, who has no idea he’s fathered a son. “ A stunning and jaw-dropping spectacle with lavish sets and special effects, and sumptuous production numbers, meticulously mounted. This is what people mean when they talk about ‘A Broadway Show’.” Marilyn Stasio, Variety Please note: Contains scenes of a sexual nature

Pressure, the acclaimed play by David Haig, is the remarkable real-life tale of two warring Allied meteorologists tasked with predicting the weather conditions for the D-Day landings. 72 hours prior to the D-Day landings, Dalkeith born meteorologist, Group Captain James Stagg, advises General Eisenhower on the weather conditions likely to prevail when 350,000 troops are to be sent across the Channel in Operation Overlord. With Stagg predicting severe storms and Irving P. Krick - Hollywood’s meteorological movie consultant predicting beautiful weather, the future of Britain, Europe and the United States rests on one single forecast. David Haig is a five-time nominee and Olivier Award-winning actor best known for his roles in the film Four Weddings and a Funeral, TV series The Thin Blue Line and stage production of The Madness of King George III. Evenings 7.30pm Matinees Wed & Sat 2.30pm King’s Theatre Winner of the 1997 Olivier Award for Best New Play A remote Irish town…haunted by secrets. Conor McPherson’s chilling, modern classic The Weir comes to The King’s as part of a UK tour to mark the play’s twentieth anniversary. In a small Irish town, the locals exchange stories round the crackling fire of Brendan’s pub to while away the hours one stormy night. As the beer and whisky flows, the arrival of a young stranger, haunted by a secret from her past, turns the tales of folklore into something more unsettling. One story, however, is more chilling and more real than any of them could have ever imagined. A shadowy tale delving into the dark corners of human lives, The Weir is a co-production between English Touring Theatre (winners of 2016 UK Theatre Awards’ Best Touring Production for The Herbal Bed), and Mercury Theatre Colchester.

The physically charged and sensual choreography fuses contemporary dance with nods to the Spanish paso doble and flamenco. A stunning set design by Luis Crespo and minimalist black-and-white costumes by fashion designer David Delfin evoke the paintings of Pablo Picasso. Highly original and full of elaborate partnering, Gustavo Ramírez Sansano’s CARMEN.maquia is a bold and electrifying reimagining of this tragic tale.

Opera comes up against burlesque in an unfortunate double booking, in this playful production from director and designer Antony McDonald (Rusalka 2016) that is bursting with style and fun. Strauss’s sublime score flits between catchy comic turns, virtuosic coloratura and free-flowing lyricism. The talented international cast includes British opera legend Sir Thomas Allen as the Music Master and Scottish tenor and broadcaster Jamie MacDougall as the Dancing Master.

Tue 27 to Sat 31 March

Evenings 7.30pm Matinees Thu & Sat 2.30pm Festival Theatre Following sell-out runs at the National Theatre and in the West End, this extraordinarily prescient play takes on a new importance in the current political climate. Are we in the midst of a political revolution? Can the country stay united? Roll back to 1974. The corridors of Westminster ring with the sound of infighting and backbiting as Britain’s political parties battle to change the future of the nation, whatever it takes. James Graham’s biting, energetic and critically-acclaimed play strips politics down to the practical realities of those behind the scenes who roll up their sleeves, and on occasion bend the rules, to manoeuvre a diverse and conflicting chorus of MPs within the Mother of all Parliaments.

Recently married to his beloved Effie, his addiction to excess finds him in the company of a wild, gothic fairy. As his love for the strange and beautiful fairy becomes an obsession, James embarks on a fateful journey that takes him from the mean streets and nightclubs of Glasgow into a world beyond reality and reason. Presented exclusively by Scottish Ballet, Matthew Bourne’s Highland Fling is La Sylphide for the Trainspotting generation. The Scottish Ballet Orchestra will be performing Herman Severin Løvenskiold’s magnificent score.

Set both on and off-stage during the production of a musical version of Shakespeare’s theatrical farce, The Taming of the Shrew, Kiss Me, Kate revolves around the tempestuous love lives of actor-producer Fred Graham and his leading lady turned ex-wife, Lilli Vanessi. Add to the mix ingénue Lois Lane, her boyfriend Bill Calhoun – not to mention a couple of gangsters who somehow get caught up in the show – and you’ve got the perfect recipe for an evening of musical mischief that will leave you feeling positively ‘WUNDERBAR!’

Richard Alston has been making dance for 50 years. From his first piece in swinging London in 1968, Richard started the UK’s first independent dance company (Strider), trained with Merce Cunningham in New York in the 70’s and became Artistic Director of Rambert in the 80’s. In the 90’s he formed his own company and he will celebrate his half-century with a brand new piece for Edinburgh in 2018.

This exciting new creation will be joined by Martin Lawrance’s brand new work UNDERHAND. Lawrance moves into unfamiliar territory with contrasting music by two composers, Damian Legassick and Michael Gordon. Fast frenetic rhythm with a cool, sombre undertone takes the piece into a world of shadow and swift dodges.

“ A strikingly wise, stimulating and rewarding programme” Mary Brennan, The Herald, September 2017

For more than 40 years, the all-male comedy ballet company Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo (affectionately known as “The Trocks”) have been delighting audiences of all ages at sell-out performances featuring their fabulous sense of fun and their flawless dance. Established in New York, the Trocks are now loved world-wide for their sassy spoofs and hilarious homages to classical ballet, where 18 dancers each transform into two personas, both male and female! Every performance frivolously froths with tutus and testosterone, blush-pink ballet pumps, fierce false eyelashes and prima ballerina attitude however, what makes this company extraordinarily special is their immaculate technique, daring physicality, surpassed only by their impeccable comic timing.

Cinderella

Sat 8 to Sun 30 December Festival Theatre

The ultimate spectacle. Primary colours that burst out of the darkness. Billowing ball gowns whisking you into a magical world. And Prokofiev’s irresistibly melodic score showing well-loved characters in a whole new light – performed live by the Scottish Ballet Orchestra. Christopher Hampson’s Cinderella is everything you adore about the classic fairy tale – made fresh, funny and touching. We meet Cinderella at the saddest of times, then see her taken for granted by her wicked stepmother and two nasty stepsisters. But there’s no time for despair: Cinderella’s fairy godmother is casting spells of dressmaker spiders, magical roses and a very special glass slipper. Will love conquer loneliness, and light chase away the dark? Be part of the spectacle, and rediscover this classic tale.
