This innovative re-imagining of Charlotte Brontë’s masterpiece is a collaboration between the National Theatre and Bristol Old Vic and is directed by Sally Cookson. The classic story of the trailblazing Jane is as inspiring as ever. This bold and dynamic production uncovers one woman’s fight for freedom and fulfilment on her own terms. THE ATTIC COLLECTIVE

Directed by SUSAN WORSFOLD

Thu 25 to Sat 27 May Preview Wed 24 May

Evenings 7.30pm Matinee Sat 2pm Former Royal High School, Regent Road War in America is a searing insight into the political elite and the games they play in the pursuit of power. Jo Clifford’s poignant and poetic play paints a vivid picture of a country in political turmoil. With changes in the party and a new female leader set on pursuing the truth, what evils will be deemed necessary, will each side stop at nothing to get what they want? How long can the nation stand when the political and the personal collide. When truth is a dishonourable business? A moment of certainty must come…This is a democracy after all. Clifford’s foresight is a damning critique on lessons not learnt and history repeating itself...

Wed 31 May, Sun 4, Tue 6, Thu 8 & Sat 10 June

Evenings 7.15pm (not Sun) Matinee Sun 4pm Festival Theatre One evening Rodolfo hears a knock at the door. It is Mimì, a neighbour, who has no match to light her candle. They stumble in the dark; their hands touch; they fall in love. But love is complicated and all is not as perfect as first it seems… Director Renaud Doucet and designer André Barbe (Don Pasquale 2014) return with a new production of Puccini’s classic, La bohème. Set amidst the jumble of Paris’s famous flea markets, and inspired by the Jazz Age of Josephine Baker, this production will be full of their trademark colour, character and style. Puccini’s sublime score never fails to cast its spell, with some of the most ravishing music in opera, and the story – which inspired the musicals Moulin Rouge! and Rent – is a romantic classic. Hye-Youn Lee (Madama Butterfly 2014) is the fated Mimì and Luis Gomes is Rodolfo. Music Director Stuart Stratford conducts.

Dripping with energy and packed with ingenuity, Merely Theatre returns with a double-bill of Shakespeare delivered for (and with) the audience. The genderblind cast of five present two of Shakespeare’s classic works in their signature style of energy, accessibility and crystal clear storytelling. In Romeo & Juliet, Merely present young love in all its raw and savage beauty, driving through action-packed thrills and tender intimacy to crushing loss. Twelfth Night collides unlikely lovers in a tale of identical twins, multiple disguises and mistaken identities in a production that proves raucous and joyous, witty and moving.

Scotland’s national dance company returns with a programme inspired by the music of one of the most distinctive and influential composers of the 20th Century, Igor Stravinsky, performed by the Scottish Ballet Orchestra. Le Baiser de La Fée (The Fairy’s Kiss), by renowned Scottish choreographer Sir Kenneth MacMillan, will feature a stunning new set and costumes. The ballet is inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale The Ice Maiden and tells the story of a boy destined for immortality after being kissed at birth by a fairy. The Rite of Spring, choreographed by Scottish Ballet’s Artistic Director Christopher Hampson, brings raw physicality to this programme. Featuring only three dancers, it tells the story of two brothers as they grow together, come of age and descend into a violent confrontation.

HHHH The restaging of Le Baiser de la Fée is generously supported by The Linbury Trust.

Who needs reasons when you’ve got heroin? Trainspotting hurtles through the heroin hinterlands of Thatcher-era Leith. In a world where work and opportunities are scarce, Renton, Sick Boy, Begbie and Spud rail against the trappings of a successful lifestyle held out of their reach, and seek life through the point of a needle. Published in 1993, Irvine Welsh’s Trainspotting defined a generation and remains one of the most hard-hitting stories of our time. After sell-out success in 2016, the Citizens Theatre bring this intense and often hilarious story home to Edinburgh.

Passionate, flamboyant, gripping; Sir David McVicar’s La traviata is not to be missed. Set in the demi-monde of 1880s Paris, this stunning show is designed with sumptuous period style and gets right to the core of Violetta and Alfredo’s doomed love affair – finding a heartbreakingly human story in the midst of a hedonistic world where both the rich and the wretched have their fun. Verdi’s magnificent score sweeps the characters through their every shifting mood, brought to life by Russian-Dutch soprano Gulnara Shafigullina and Dutch tenor Peter Gijsbertsen.

FLIGHT

Jonathan Dove’s life-affirming comedy flies north for its Scottish Opera premiere, with all the feel-good flair that garnered the performances at Opera Holland Park such rave reviews in 2015. Inspired by the same story as Spielberg’s The Terminal, Flight tells the tale of a group of total strangers stranded in an airport during an electrical storm – as tensions rise and their relationships unravel some unexpected discoveries are made… Dove’s vividly inventive score channels a huge range of influences into his own distinctive style – from the fast-paced brilliance of Rossini to Mozart, Ravel and Bernstein.

Thu 5 & Sat 7 April Evenings 7.15pm

Following his five-star Rusalka in 2016, director and designer Antony McDonald is back with a new production. In a large country house, two troupes of performers collide in an unfortunate double booking. Opera comes up against burlesque, and high ideals against a more ‘carefree’ approach… This playful production is bursting with life and promises plenty of style – and plenty of fun. An international cast is joined by British opera legend Sir Thomas Allen as the Music Master and Scottish tenor and BBC broadcaster Jamie MacDougall as the Dancing Master.

A lovesick young girl; a cocky young man who thoughtlessly spurns her; a heart-stopping duel between should-be friends. Director Oliver Mears (The Royal Opera) teams up with award-winning designer Annemarie Woods, taking this hopelessly romantic story to a world full of memories and dreams, where the past is ever present. Tchaikovsky’s soaring score is the most radiant of Russian lyric operas; dramatic and expressive and full of the raw emotion of Pushkin’s original masterpiece. Natalya Romaniw (Rusalka 2016) is Tatyana. Samuel Dale Johnson (The Marriage of Figaro 2016) is Onegin.

“Once upon a time and far far away there were 25 tin soldiers. Brothers. Because they were all born from one single spoon. One spoon! That must have been one flipping big spoon. Enormous. Have you ever thought?” Hans Christian Andersen’s first ever children’s story is about two people who find each other in a rough tough world, although, like winter, nothing lasts forever. Written by acclaimed writer of young persons theatre Mike Kenny (The Railway Children) and featuring award-winning Russian puppet designer Victor Nonenko, Birds of Paradise’s new Christmas show is a magical tale of derring do, devotion and never giving up.
