CRAIG REVEL Horwood

Hello,

I’m really looking forward to visiting Edinburgh for the Scottish Premiere of one of the world’s favourite musicals. My connection with Fiddler on the Roof goes way back: I once dated a girl who starred in the Broadway musical, and later I was cast in the 1971 film version. For years afterwards I’d find myself humming the tunes from Fiddler. The show has such global appeal – it has an amazing score and a universal story. My character, Tevye the milkman, has always stuck by his traditions, but suddenly his headstrong daughters decide that they want to marry for love rather than accept whatever Yente the Matchmaker comes up with. Directed and choreographed by Craig Revel Horwood, the nation’s favourite Strictly Come Dancing judge and master of the musical stage, the show also features a cast of twenty doubly talented actor/musicians who perform the magnificent orchestral score live on stage.

Richard Alston is “a choreographer for whom every dance is a love affair with his chosen music” (The Times). This programme matches the beauty of Mozart with the delicate exactitude of Jo Kondo and the exhilaration of Benjamin Britten. Featuring the brand new Buzzing Round the Hunisuccle to Kondo’s music, Lachrymae, celebrating the centenary of Benjamin Britten with live accompaniment, and the “astonishingly sustained” (New York Times) duet from Unfinished Business. Illuminations, to Britten’s masterwork, closes the evening with a vivid picture of the genius Arthur Rimbaud.

Experience an evening of three short masterpieces by some of the world’s most cutting-edge choreographers.

Russell Maliphant’s Afterlight (Part One) consists of a stunning solo performance, with lighting and animated projection. Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui presents his beautiful duet Faun, a reinvention of Nijinsky’s famous ballet L’après midi d’un faune. The evening concludes with UNDANCE, a collaboration between composer Mark-Anthony Turnage, choreographer Wayne McGregor and Turner Prize-winning Mark Wallinger, performed by ten dancers of Wayne McGregor | Random Dance.

Tue 15 to Sat 19 October 2013 Inspired by the music of Madness, this uplifting musical comedy is a raucous tale of life, love, heartbreak and hilarity, set in London’s famous Camden Town in the mid-80s. Written by Tim Firth (Calendar Girls), Our House is an irresistibly brilliant musical bursting with the madcap hits of Madness. It’s Joe Casey’s 16th birthday and tonight’s the night he’s treating his girlfriend Sarah to an evening in a brand new luxury apartment – the only problem is they have to break in! When the police turn up Joe has to decide: run away, or face the music – a choice that will set the course of his life, and his love, forever. Featuring a nutty band of actor/musicians performing classics like Our House, Baggy Trousers and It Must Be Love live on stage, don’t miss this Olivier Award-winner for Best New Musical.

Thu 14, Sun 17, Tue 19, Thu 21 & Sat 23 November 2013 17th-century Venice – a city of darkness and shadows, where danger lurks in every alleyway and corruption is rife. In the centre of it all, a man in his element: Don Giovanni. Seductive, audacious, he lives life from one opportunity to the next. But will he eventually take things too far? Director Sir Thomas Allen and designer Simon Higlett (The Magic Flute 2012) bring their hallmark theatricality to Mozart’s extraordinary score. Dark, vivid, bursting with life, Don Giovanni is full-blooded opera at its best, combining exquisite music, powerful orchestration, intense drama and lightly crafted comedy. Jacques Imbrailo, hailed by The Times as “the hottest young baritone on the block”, is Don Giovanni and beloved Scottish soprano Lisa Milne is Donna Elvira. Don Pasquale, a reclusive old man with a penchant for cats, runs a crumbling pensione with a chain smoking chambermaid and a greasy cook for company. Determined to keep his wealth to himself, Pasquale searches for a wife. But when he finds one, being married isn’t quite as straightforward as he expected… Director Renaud Doucet and designer André Barbe (Manon 2009) bring Donizetti’s quickwitted, comic masterpiece to life with typically colourful and quirky style. Set in Rome at the cusp of the Swinging Sixties, the perfect setting for a titanic clash of the generations.

Classic, timeless and stylish, Sir David McVicar’s Madama Butterfly has been a firm favourite since it was first staged in 2000. Forgoing sentimentality to create a rich cast of characters with unflinchingly human characteristics, his production lays bare a hugely atmospheric, poignant story that still has the power to affect, over a century after it was first performed. Puccini’s sense of drama is second to none and Butterfly sees him doing what he does best – painting beautifully exotic pictures in sound that are dramatic, often hauntingly lyrical, and full of emotion.

Unwrap a tasty new Christmas treat with the world premiere of Christopher Hampson’s fantastical Hansel & Gretel. A 1950’s town, all the children have disappeared. Plucky Hansel and Gretel embark on an exciting adventure, venturing deep into the enchanted forest to find their friends. This delightfully inventive, brand new Hansel & Gretel takes creative twists and turns inspired by the Grimm Brothers’ famous fairy tale - and the stories and imagination of the people of Scotland. A carousel of delicious treats from start to finish, Hansel & Gretel is full to the brim with magic and wit; with toys that come to life and a beautiful, bewitching ballerina who is not at all as she seems. Scrumptiously surreal and with more than a sprinkle of festive magic - take an enchanting journey with Scotland’s national dance company this winter. Humperdinck’s evocative score is performed live by the Scottish Ballet Orchestra. Sat 11 Jan 2pm (Touch Tour 12.30pm)

John Byrne lights up the King’s Dome Renowned Scottish artist and playwright John Byrne has created a new contemporary design for the domed ceiling of the King’s Theatre, marking the completion of the first phase of a major restoration.

Rich in theatrical motifs and references, Byrne’s design is vivid and colourful, playing on duality, light and shade, and features the opening lines from Jaques’ famous monologue in As You Like It, “All the world’s a stage…” The dome is John Byrne’s largest surviving artwork, covering an area of 57m2, and has greatly enhanced the King’s Theatre.

Theatre fit for a King’s

Last year saw a dramatic refurbishment for the beloved King’s Theatre, including new carpeting, luxurious new seating and improved wheelchair access for a vastly improved audience experience. Since the King’s opened in 1906, these are only the third significant changes the theatre has undergone in over 100 years. We are committed to investing in your King’s Theatre with an ongoing restoration project to return ‘The Old Lady of Leven Street’ back to her glory days.

12+ Tue 1 to Sat 5 October 2013 Under cover of night, an English army has swept through the landscape, killed Macbeth and taken the seat of power. Attempting to restore peace and put in place a new ruler, Siward, the commanding officer, is beset by a brutal guerrilla uprising and simmering discontent amongst his own inexperienced troops. Struggling to grasp the alien customs and politics of this harsh country, he finds himself drawn towards Macbeth’s powerful widow in search of someone to share his burden of responsibility. Increasingly isolated from his own men and Scottish allies alike, his efforts to restore order appear futile as the situation spins out of control. Starring Siobhan Redmond, David Greig’s exhilarating play is a vision of one man’s attempt to restore peace in a country ravaged by war.

Tue 29 October to Sat 2 November 2013 Based on E.R. Braithwaite’s autobiography, and brilliantly adapted by Ayub Khan Din (East is East), To Sir, With Love is the story of Ricky Braithwaite, an ex-RAF fighter pilot and Cambridge graduate. He soon discovers the reality of life as a black man in post-war England and, taking the only job he can get, Ricky begins his first teaching post in a tough but progressive East End school run by the enlightened headmaster, Florian. Supported by Florian, the determined teacher turns teenage rebelliousness into self-respect, contempt into consideration and hate into love - and on the way Ricky himself learns that he has more in common with his students than he had realised. Matthew Kelly plays Florian, a character based on Alex Bloom, the revolutionary headteacher of St George’s secondary school in Stepney which employed Ricky. Matthew Kelly is one of the UK’s best-loved actors. Winner of an Olivier Award for Of Mice and Men, he has been widely acclaimed for television and theatre performances including the TV drama Cold Blood. He joins Ansu Kabia as Ricky.

Princess Ida runs a women-only university dedicated to anti-male propaganda. Prince Hilarion (betrothed to Ida in infancy) and two male friends break into the university and disguise themselves as girls in an attempt to win her back. When Hilarion’s father decides to launch a full-scale attack the lady undergraduates are ordered to ‘man’ the barricades. This is Gilbert and Sullivan at the height of their powers. Not to be missed!

Revival of the 2005 production Dominic Hill, Artistic Director of the Citizens Theatre, revives his brooding, atmospheric Macbeth in celebration of the 2014 Year of Homecoming. Inspired by events in the war-torn Balkans, Hill’s production is at once contemporary and ageless; a world of camouflage-clad leaders and grungy, chainsmoking witches, where power is all, but it comes at a price.

In Shakespeare’s most magical play, love and illusion collide when two pairs of lovers become entangled in fairy mischief on the eve of a Royal Wedding. Dreams and reality become interchangeable and romantic chaos ensues. Seeing really is believing! In Shakespeare’s smartest and most farcical play, The Comedy of Errors, two sets of estranged twins, separated at birth, find themselves in the same city 25 years later with hilarious consequences. Fortunately, the audience is always one step ahead...

Tue 29 April to Sat 3 May 2014 To coincide with the 30th anniversary of the Miners’ Strike of 1984, we are proud to present this production of Brassed Off directed by Damian Cruden (director of Olivier Award-winning The Railway Children). It is 1992, Grimley Colliery faces the threat of closure and the future of the brass band seems uncertain. With the miners torn between redundancy packages and the picket lines, band-leader Danny’s hopes of winning the national brass band competition seem like a distant dream. But the arrival of flugelhorn-playing Gloria brings hope, romance and controversy to the Yorkshire brass band on the brink of collapse. Featuring rousing live music including Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez and Jerusalem, Brassed Off is a funny and heartwarming drama that reaches stirring heights as a local Brass Band performs the final scene, set in the Royal Albert Hall, live on stage at the King’s.

Tue 30 September to Sat 4 October 2014 Set in Edinburgh and commemorating the centenary of the First World War, Pat Barker’s Regeneration tells the story of Siegfried Sassoon. In July 1917, in an open letter to The Times, Sassoon made a passionate denunciation of both the war’s aims and the strategy of the generals. The army, reluctant to court martial Sassoon, decided instead to commit him to Craiglockhart War Hospital in Edinburgh, where he was incarcerated until he was ‘cured.’ At Craiglockhart, Sassoon meets and befriends another patient, fellow poet Wilfred Owen, and is ‘treated’ by Dr W H Rivers, a pioneering psychiatrist in the treatment of what we now call Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. Challenging definitions of sanity itself, the play dramatically explores the effects of war and of man’s battle to honour both his conscience and duty to his fellow man.
