MAX&Co. introduces the latest in its &Co.llaboration series, this time with Fatma Mostafa, the youngest winner of the 2022 Fashion Trust Arabia. Fatma, a versatile artist and craftsperson, brings her expertise in painting, embroidery, photography and design to the collaboration. Drawing from her upbringing and diverse interests, she infuses her eponymous jewellery brand with artistry and embroidery techniques learned from her mother. The Elham capsule, named after the Arabic word for inspiration, draws creativity from nature’s beauty and Fatma’s craft influences. The collection’s eccentric colours and materials reflect Egyptian landscapes and Monet’s paintings as primary influences. Once again, OHLALA was present at one of the largest watch exhibitions in the world: Watches and Wonders Geneva 2024.
As watch and jewellery enthusiasts, Watches and Wonders Geneva is always on our radar. This year, again, we had the opportunity to walk the corridors, visit the booths and participate at In The City and Watchmaking Village events to bring you the latest launches.
The Salon was held in Geneva, Switzerland, from April 9 to 15, and the most desirable brands in the field showcased their coveted and latest designs. This edition saw the arrival of eight new brands and a record of 54 exhibiting maisons. The initial four days were reserved for professionals only, but the last three days were open for the general public for the first time.
The 2024 programme was designed for all – those starting in the industry, watch aficionados or experienced collectors. The fair is well-known for allowing visitors to explore the culture of watchmaking in depth and take an inside look at the inner workings of an industry that is fuelled by creativity, craft and passion.
The key element was innovation with a focus on young people. “We have noticed a growing interest in our industry from the younger generation, with an average age of 35 on the public days, which is extremely encouraging,” commented Matthieu Humair, CEO of the Watches and Wonders Geneva Foundation. In the new LAB, schools, start-ups and exhibiting brands presented their vision for tomorrow’s watchmaking. The auditorium hosted a series of conferences on various themes and visitors were invited to reflect on the passing moment through Luc Debraine’s photo exhibition Timekeepers.
Watches and Wonders Geneva is also the hub for setting trends for the year in the watchmaking universe. Some of them are the return to more classic and unisex proportions, an exploration of bold colours and the use of interchangeable bracelets. Grand complications continue to command prominence, while the use of métiers d’art (ornamental techniques in watchmaking) exemplifies the intersection of engineering and decorative art.
In terms of numbers, the 2024 edition had record-breaking figures. The event welcomed more than 49,000 visitors over the entire week (+14% compared to 2023). The activities, which could be reserved by the public, including product presentations, guided tours, workshops and more, were fully booked before the first day of the event. The hashtag #watchesandwonders2024 shot to the top of social networks, with an estimated reach of over 600 million people at closing time. The arrival of several celebrities also created a buzz on social media. Among them were the supermodel Gisele Bündchen, the tennis champion Coco Gauff and football idol Kylian Mbappé. The business also reached new heights, with over 10,000 retailer appointments (+25% vs 2023), 1,800 Touch & Feel press sessions and a significant increase in end-clients placing orders.

Monreale, a city in Sicily, Italy, steeped in history and artistry, now becomes synonymous with Dolce&Gabbana’s move into haute couture watchmaking. In a debut that resonates with elegance and innovation, the renowned fashion house unveils its Alta Orologeria (haute horlogerie) creations, each a testament to timeless beauty and unparalleled craftsmanship. At the heart of this horological marvel lies the Dolce&Gabbana 13.03 calibre, a Swiss-made movement meticulously crafted to pay homage to the artistry of watchmaking. This manual wristwatch, adorned with a minute repeater and flying tourbillon, transcends mere timekeeping to embody a narrative of art, excellence and passion. Spa Social is a new beauty and wellness destination in Bahrain that is creating a lot of buzz. Fernanda Langhammer went there to check what makes them stand out – read on to learn why!
Have you ever dreamed of finding a place where you can exercise in a pleasant atmosphere with the latest gym equipment and classes, get a massage or facial with highend products and finish your beautification day with a fabulous hair treatment and blow dry? This dream is now a reality at Spa Social. The new trendy spot located on the first floor of Al Gharbi Centre in Riffa offers all of that in a very sleek but extremely welcoming space. I went there to check it out and spotted the Crush Fitness gym door after reaching the first floor using the escalator, this is Spa Social’s sister company, where you can add movement to your life. The open space is home to all sorts of gym equipment and modern apparatus to help you build strength as well as studio classes. The ladies-only gym is based on memberships and and offers Megaformer Lagree Studio workouts for the first time in Bahrain. After having a peek at the gym, I continued through the corridor that took me to Spa Social’s reception. The décor is very sophisticated but minimalistic with contemporary grey, caramel and white tones and wood and grey stone textures. However, the indirect lighting makes all the difference and gives a chic atmosphere to the space. Louise, the Spa and Salon Director, welcomed me and introduced me to Tee, my facial therapist for the day.
Tee led the way to the treatment room and, after analysing my skin, she decided that the Rose Quartz Facial from 111Skin would be an excellent option for me. The 90-minute treatment is said to be perfect if you have a big event to attend for the ultimate glow. It gives hydration and radiance, leaving your skin luminous. It was definitely a great option for me as my complexion looked super dull and needed good hydration as I had landed from a 15-hour flight just the day before.
Tee started by cleaning my skin with a Vitamin C Brightening Cleanser, followed by the Rose Quartz Exfoliating Mask, which has a multi-fruit acid action, and ended the process of removing impurities from my complexion with the Exfolactic Cleanser, an AHA solution that clarifies without irritation. It was time for the Antioxidant Energising Essence toner to be applied with thin gauze. According to Tee, cotton pads absorb all the product, but the gauze allows the product be properly absorbed by the skin (she also gave a tip to pat the toner onto my clean face at home; I am definitely adopting this trick).
The Rose Gold Radiance Booster serum was then applied with 111Skin’s famous minimising wand in the heart of each wrinkle – a process where the therapist adds a little pressure on the fine lines using the round-tipped wand. She then moved to the eye area with the Space Defence Bright Eye Lift Gel NAC Y² followed by the Y Theorem Repair Light Serum and Y Theorem Day Cream NAC Y² applied with a firm, lifting and lymphatic massage. But this wouldn’t be a 111Skin facial treatment if it didn’t have an iconic step: the mask! Tee applied the Rose Gold Brightening Facial Treatment Mask, which is known for quick tightening, plumping and hydration.
Meanwhile, she asked if I wanted a hand or foot massage. I chose the first option and enjoyed a comprehensive hand massage while we waited for the mask to work its magic. After removing the mask, Tee used rose quartz crystals to massage the residual product deeply into my skin. The crystals were quite cold and gave me a wonderful, refreshing sensation. She ended the session with a lip balm, and I was ready to view my face. I could already feel the benefits of this incredible treatment, but when I saw myself in the mirror, my skin looked absolutely amazing! Glowing and the fine lines seemed to have disappeared completely. I highly recommend this therapy if you need a boost of vivacity to your skin and immediate results.
I thanked Tee and moved to the salon area where Janet, the nail technician, was waiting for me. The salon space is divided into nail and hair and has the same edgy décor. I sat in one of the super comfy armchairs to get the Margaret Dabbs Pedicure. The British brand is well-known for its scientific approach to treating hands and feet with products tailored to these areas. She started the dry pedicure with a cleanse, followed by the Exfoliating Foot Scrub, which she rubbed more attentively in my heels and calloused areas. Water was used to remove the product (the only time water was involved in the ritual) and, after drying my feet, she applied the Foot Hygiene Cream formulated with medicinal ingredients, which is recommended for use twice a week. After a massage, she clipped my nails, removed the excess from my cuticles and applied the red nail polish I chose. My feet felt extremely good and super soft – bye, bye dry heels!
I then moved to the hair area, where I met Rhea, who would be in charge of my tresses. She analysed my hair and chose Aveda’s Botanical Repair treatment to add strength to my damaged hair. The salon-only treatment is a bond builder that strengthens the hair from the inside. A home care
line is also available. What caught my attention was that the haircare was a sensory experience with a scent sprayed around me and a calming aromatic oil applied to my scalp in a gentle massage. We then moved to the wash basin, where the first product opened the cuticles of my hair. The next step was to apply the bond activator that penetrates the cortex to ignite deep strengthening. Rhea covered my head with a hot towel to act like a steamer to help the product penetrate deeply into the hair fibre. After 15 minutes, I was ready for styling (they also offer a unique curly hair service that I will have to return to try). While Rhea was blow-drying my locks, Janet returned for an express manicure.
Before saying goodbye to the fantastic team at Spa Social, I checked the boutique area where they retail the products they use and much more, such as a silk pillowcase highly recommended by Lousie. I left with a leave-in chosen by Rhea to style my natural curly hair.
It was a shame I had nowhere to go after this magnificent day dedicated to me. It was a Netflix night – a date with myself – and I felt absolutely fabulous! If you are looking for somewhere to have your beauty needs taken care of in an elevated way, Spa Social is the place to go.

OHLALA – What inspired you to transition from construction and interiors to the wellness sector?
Nouf Abdulrahim – I have always been inspired by beauty, creating beautiful spaces and envisioning concepts that would then turn into stunning realities. I have an eye for detail and perfection and I'd say my inspiration to transition into the wellness space stems particularly from my love for beauty and beautiful things. I had always been a huge skin fanatic – my room is one big laboratory full of the world's most coveted products. I also felt that wellness is and should be an integral part of a woman's routine. In the midst of our busy lives, we get consumed with work and household responsibilities, neglecting our own wellbeing. Recognising this issue has driven me to create a space where wellness takes centre stage in a woman's routine. Spa Social was created as a beautiful sanctuary where women can come together, socialise and indulge in the art of pampering. This goes beyond the conventional notions of beauty, fostering community and empowerment.

The hospitality scene in Bahrain recently acquired a new member: Raffles Al Areen Palace Bahrain. OHLALA spoke to its General Manager, Marie Berengere Chapoton, to get to know more about the property and her leadership.

OHLALA – How did hospitality enter your life? What made you choose this career path?
Marie Berengere Chapoton – Hospitality entered my life at an early stage, and it quickly became my passion. I was captivated by the idea of creating exceptional experiences for others and providing outstanding service. From a young age, I found joy in curating moments that left a lasting impression on people. My passion, cultural connections and the industry’s dynamics made it a natural and fulfilling choice for me.
OHLALA – You’ve worked with different hotel brands and in many different countries. What, in your opinion, makes a good leader in this sector?
Marie – A good leader in the hospitality sector combines strong leadership skills, adaptability, customer focus, cultural intelligence, problem-solving abilities and an exemplary work ethic to create a positive and successful environment for both employees and guests.
OHLALA – As mentioned previously, you worked in different countries. How important is it to understand the culture that you are inserted in for the success of the property?
Marie – Understanding local culture is crucial for a property’s success. It shapes guest expectations and behaviours, allowing leaders to tailor offerings and services. It builds trust, fosters relationships and helps navigate regulations and business practices. Cultural understanding enhances guest satisfaction and drives long-term success.
OHLALA – As the General Manager, what do you see as your primary role?
Marie – As the General Manager, my primary role is to provide strategic leadership and oversee the overall operations of the property. Setting the vision, goals and direction of the hotel, ensuring its financial success and delivering exceptional guest experiences. A significant part of my role involves leading and inspiring a high-performing team. I establish a positive work culture, provide guidance and empower employees to excel in their roles. I ensure that the property consistently delivers outstanding service, meets or exceeds guest expectations and maintains high standards of quality. I actively engage with guests, listen to their feedback and implement improvements to enhance their experience. Financial management is another key aspect of my role. I oversee budgeting, financial planning and cost control to optimise revenue and profitability. As the General Manager, I act as the ambassador of the property, building and maintaining relationships with key stakeholders, including owners, investors, local authorities and the community.
OHLALA – Raffles Al Areen Palace Bahrain is relatively new in Bahrain. What are the essential aspects to take into consideration when introducing a new concept, and what are the most exciting challenges?
Marie – When introducing a new concept like Raffles Al Areen Palace
Bahrain, important considerations include market analysis, developing a compelling concept, effective marketing, comprehensive training and adapting based on guest feedback. Exciting challenges include creating brand awareness, acquiring and retaining guests, delivering on promises and adapting to market dynamics. It’s an opportunity to make a lasting impact by offering something unique and memorable to guests.
OHLALA – What makes Raffles Al Areen Palace Bahrain such a unique property? What are its main highlights for you? Is there any special space that you like most?
Marie – So many aspects make Raffles Bahrain unique. MEET-AND-GREET SERVICE
Touching down at Dubai International on a sunny Thursday afternoon, we were warmly welcomed by the hotel’s friendly and efficient meet-and-greet service. We soon found ourselves en route to the northernmost emirate of the UAE, the accommodation itself a mere 45-minute journey from the airport.
EXQUISITE LOCATION
As we neared the eco-friendly, Thai-inspired hotel, we were captivated by the outdoor setting. The Anantara Mina Al Arab Ras Al Khaimah Resort is situated on a private golden peninsula, in a natural mangrove sanctuary. With views of the lagoon and breathtaking Arabian Gulf, along with access to pristine natural beaches and a backdrop of the majestic Hajar mountains, one could not ask for a better location to unwind, relax and explore.
AWE-INSPIRING ARCHITECTURE
As we entered the reception hall through a towering, triple-storey arch, we were greeted by the smiling faces of attentive staff members, along with the remarkable contemporary chandelier suspended from the ceiling. This masterfully designed and crafted centrepiece, inspired by the winds of the desert moving through the trees with hundreds of handblown glass baubles, appears to move in unison. With our effortless booking process lasting just two minutes, we were soon at our first-class villas.
The stunning accommodation of this Anantara Resort comprises a selection of 174 exquisitely designed rooms, suites and villas, all conceived for exceptional comfort and to provide the most breathtaking views.
Fortunate enough to be in an Emirate-first, Maldives-esque Overwater Pool Villa, our stay could not have been more stimulating or comfortable.
Specially constructed to be in harmony with nature, our spacious accommodation proved the epitome of island luxury with its exclusive pool and private terrace overlooking the beautiful waters.
Must-mention room amenities include a separate living room, an impressive walk-in wardrobe and a separate tub and rain shower. Complementary high-speed wi-fi and a smart TV are also on-site. We must admit to putting the espresso machine through its paces throughout the weekend.
After a late lunch, all guests made their way to the Grand Opening Party, an enchanting evening affair that offered an opportunity to mingle with investors, hotel management and fellow guests alike.
Treated as royalty, we thoroughly enjoyed this celebration of success, appreciating the speeches outlining the brand’s vision to create an ecofriendly resort that embraces, protects and promotes the local terrain, flora and fauna to benefit all.
As the night eventually drew to a close, we happily made our way to our respective rooms, grateful for our first night in these tranquil and picturesque surroundings. A better night’s sleep has never been had.
The Anantara Mina Al Arab Ras Al Khaimah Resort houses no less than six dining options. We experienced three outstanding venues, all of which proved exceptional.
On our first day, we lunched at Waves Café. This light-bite location offers cold-brew teas and single-origin coffees carefully sourced from all over the world. We indulged in sandwiches, wraps, bowls, soups and shakes, all made to order. We also spoilt ourselves with freshly baked pastries and some artisanal gelato.
On both mornings of our stay, we were invited for breakfast at Sea Breeze, a venue with a contemporary-chic interior offering international cuisine on a mangrove-view terrace.
Looked after by meticulous servers, these breakfasts consisted of a vibrant market-style buffet complete with eggs cooked to order and some of the freshest and tastiest baked bread and pastries we’ve ever had.
On the final evening of our stay, we dined at the glamourous Mekong, a world-class restaurant offering signature dishes and favourites inspired by Anantara’s native Thailand as well as Vietnam and China. The master chefs have reinterpreted these traditional meals for the modern palate while remaining true to classic cooking techniques. My meal consisted of three equally delicious courses; however, the main course of Pad Thai Noodles demands a special mention. Truly delicious!
The Anantara Mina Al Arab Ras Al Khaimah Resort offers a variety of activities designed to showcase its rich natural surroundings and accessible locations. These include kayaking through natural mangroves filled with protected wildlife. Several other water-based activities are also on offer, including luxurious yachting experiences.
The nearby Jebel Jais Mountains provide further opportunities for exploration. The hotel kindly shuttled guests to the phenomenal Jais Viewing Deck Park, where we took advantage of the seven viewing decks with 12 powerful binoculars to take in the wonderful panoramic views. The fresh mountain air also proved invigorating. Perhaps the most exciting moment of the adventure was the Jais Sleder –a solar-powered toboggan mountain experience - 1,885 metres long. This novel way to experience the terrain was exhilarating, making us all feel like children again.
For the truly adventurous, there is the Jebel Jais zipline. Not only the world’s longest zipline, it also reaches speeds of up to 150km/h. Mountain hiking, hot air ballooning and desert exploration are also offered by the hotel, along with an assortment of activities for youngsters.
Amongst the multitude of amenities and services at the Anantara Mina Al Arab Ras Al Khaimah Resort are both wedding locations and conference facilities.
We were lucky enough to experience a tranquil oasis in the form of the Anantara Spa, where we were treated to the venue’s signature massage that combines Eastern and Western techniques with Anantara’s signature oil blend. After an hour of bliss, we left feeling relaxed, revitalised and ready to return to our everyday lives.
After the second night of our truly amazing stay at this uniquely beautiful hotel, it was hard to say goodbye to all our new friends and to leave such a serene and luxurious environment. Seated on our return flight, we had already agreed this was one venue we would visit again in a heartbeat.

What makes you go back to an eatery has to do with good food and enchanting ambience, and La Ro combines these elements with mastery. OHLALA’s editor went there to check what this brand-new venue has to offer.
What comes to your mind when you hear the word bistro? A charming spot with comforting and extraordinary food, right? A place that offers a lovely ambience and a menu that plays with your taste buds but at the same time gives a familiar feeling. Well, to be honest, La Ro is exactly that and a little more.
The new dining destination is located in Hamala Hills, and the first thing that caught my attention was the impeccable décor. At the entrance, wood panels and stage-like curtains welcome you, and it feels as if you have stepped inside a portal that takes you into a cosy French café, evoking a sense of European elegance. The walls are covered in beautiful contemporary wallpaper and French posters. The furniture mixes red velvet armchairs and modern grey and golden seating in geometric patterns. The space is divided into four areas. The first is where the red velvet armchairs are; you’ll also find bar stools where you can wait comfortably to be seated. Moving forward, marbled tables and booths give the space a casual flair, accompanied by a terraced area with outdoor furniture for the ultimate laid-back vibe. My favourite area, though, was the upstairs room. Square tables with red and white cloths illuminated by the natural light coming from the big window created the atmosphere I was looking for.
Our table was upstairs, and the little table lamps and ceramic decorations shaped like friendly chickens added extra charm to the whole space. Chef Hussain Abusaqer came to talk to us and explain the menu and restaurant concept. Trained in France, he told us everything is prepared from scratch: sauces (and there are many), ice cream and pasta. They also have a special oven to deliver the best rotisserie chicken on the island. I guess attention to detail makes a huge difference when offering a concept that doesn’t want to give off a snobbish flair but rather allows the complexity of techniques, dish choices and quality of products to speak for themselves.
The menu is the perfect size, offering delectable dishes with something for everyone and there is nothing pretentious about La Ro. It’s a well-resolved eatery that knows exactly what it is here for: to be a go-to, feel-good restaurant. We started with a selection of entrées. A traditional pick and my go-to when in France is the Soupe à l’Oignon, or onion soup. I absolutely love it; however, it is difficult to find places that prepare it well or at least the way I like it. At La Ro, as you can imagine, it was perfect: creamy with caramelised small pieces of onion full of flavour, topped with crunchy croutons and delicious Gruyere cheese – I am definitely going back for that (lucky me, I live in the same neighbourhood). The other starter that was a stunner was the Salade de Lentilles, a filling dish made with around 16 ingredients, such as quinoa, butternut squash, green apples, raisins, leeks, mint, parsley and so much more, all cut into small pieces along with all-dente lentils, absolutely fantastic.
The Petit Burger is composed of two sliders made with short rib and Gruyère cheese with a touch of caramelised onions. The chunk of fatty, tender meat made this dish simple yet flavoursome. The Salade de Canard is presented as a pleasant surprise. Under a mountain of rocket leaves, micro greens, grapefruit and almond flakes lies a duck confit glazed with Ras el Hanout, a spice mix found mainly in Morocco and that in Arabic means the head of the shop, which refers to the best spices the seller has to offer. The waiter served us by chopping the duck into pieces and mixing it with the green concoction, while the sweet and tangy dressing gave the right acidity, complementing this dish beautifully.
For Les Plats (main courses), we had two types of Angus beef: Steak Frites made with thin slices of Angus sirloin, lean cut with a rich, meaty flavour and a red centre accompanied by a to-die-for butter and herb sauce, and Steak au Poivre, made with Angus tenderloin dressed in peppercorn sauce accompanied by thin chips. The first was my dining companion’s favourite dish by far; she kept going back for more, and the fries that accompanied it were skinny and crispy – pure perfection! The tenderloin was extremely tender, with a mild meaty flavour that was elevated by the peppercorn sauce.
We also had the Confit de Canard, a staple in French cuisine made with duck leg and accompanied by the best version of potatoes that we had that day, Pommes Anna. A classic French way to prepare potatoes where they are thinly sliced and cooked in a large amount of butter. The texture plays a big role here, with melt-in-your-mouth bites and crispy parts – it was yummy. The Linguini Pistou was fresh pasta cooked to perfection with pesto and Gruyère cheese, with comforting and balanced flavours.
And, last but not least, we tried the restaurant’s star dish: Poulet Rôti, the rotisserie chicken that can be accompanied by house, spicy, maple or truffle jus. We had the first option, and we couldn’t get enough of it as it was cooked to perfection. The meat retained all the juices and was super tender. If you are a chicken fan, this is definitely the place for you.
A separate menu carries the mocktails and desserts. The drinks we had were Moulin Rouge, a berry concoction with ginger ale; French Kiss, made with red grapes and hibiscus; Seine Sunrise, a tropical pineapple, mango and coconut foam; and Before Sunset, a refreshing iced tea, green apple, peach and lemongrass mix. They were all unique and invigorating.
To satisfy our sweet tooth, we had the Mille-Feuille Minute that at La Ro has a very thin and flaky salted caramel pastry with two thick layers of pastry cream. It was not too sweet, and the dough’s crunchiness and the filling’s thick consistency gave it a lovely texture and delicate flavour. But our favourite dessert was the Gateau Laro, a soft, warm brioche with a crunchy, sugary crust teamed up with vanilla ice cream. It’s difficult to find words to describe such a comforting and perfect dessert; I can only say that even after so much food, we managed to finish it – it’s worth the trip! But you have to order with your main course as it takes around 25 minutes to prepare.
La Ro is not just a want-to-be French bistro; it is that casual yet elegant neighbourhood restaurant that you keep coming back to. I certainly will!

OHLALA SPENT THE DAY IN THE NEW BMW X2, A SUBCOMPACT CROSSOVER MAKING WAVES IN THE PREMIUM SUV MARKET.
BMW have long established themselves as top contenders in the high-end SUV segment, with various models proving popular throughout the world. However, it is their smallest SUV offering that’s currently receiving much of the attention. This month, thanks to the team at Euro Motors, OHLALA got behind the wheel of the brand’s new subcompact luxury crossover SUV, the BMW X2. Although this freshly updated model comes in all-electric options, it was the petrol-powered sDrive 18d version that we were lucky enough to experience.
Our first impression of the new X2 was that it is a sportier version of the X1, albeit with its own personality and style.
In the X2, the master crafters at BMW have managed to effortlessly combine the sturdy look and stance of a compact SUV with the athletic and attractive flair of a coupé.
Starting at the model-specific, upright front end, we found the shapely bonnet, complete with BMW badge, to bestow the X2 with a confident look. We also appreciated the state-of-the-art signature lighting, with the eye-catching matrix LED design. These impressive lights flank an almost hexagonal, pearl-gloss-chrome kidney grille, with all elements working together to create a beautiful face.
Shifting our attention to the sides, we immediately took note of the
dynamically stretched body lines flowing from bonnet to boot. This feature, along with the sloping roofline, enhances the sleek and tight feel of this modern SUV. The 19-inch alloy wheels, complete with a stylish V-spoke design, are fitted under prominently flared wheel arches that underscore the vehicle’s muscular shoulders.
Focussing on the back end, the Gurney-style spoiler and eye-catching rear apron first grabbed our attention – features we felt further enhance the sporty prowess of the X2. We also agreed that the novel tail lights, showcasing dazzling geometric patterns, finish off the rear with yet another touch of class.
Once inside the SUV, we instantly recognised the upmarket ambience exuded by the cabin, with sporty touches sprinkled throughout. Firstly, the exceptionally comfy, multi-functional and adjustable front seats with memory function provide a commanding view of the road ahead and the perfect point from which to appreciate the magnificence of the X2’s interior. No matter where our eyes rested, they were only greeted by high-end materials and stunning finishes.
Despite being a subcompact SUV, the new X2 provides a surprising amount of headroom and general space in both the front and the rear. A panoramic sunroof lets in an abundance of natural light, adding to the roomy feel of the vehicle.

The luggage compartment provides 560 litres of storage, a capacity increased to 1,470 litres with the rear seats folded flat. This ensures the X2 is practical for both long-distance trips and daily use. The tailgate itself opens by pressing the rear BMW badge.
As picture-perfect as the new X2 is both inside and out, it was the SUV’s included tech that proved to be the most impressive.
The X2 presents the new BMW Operating System 9 and BMW Digital Premium. Additionally, we discovered the latest version of the BMW iDrive display and control system features QuickSelect rapid-access tech. This means super-fast processing speeds.
Packaged with the BMW Curved Display and BMW Personal Assistant, the system has been designed to operate using the touchscreen and natural language.
We admired how the slender instrument panel housing the split-screen BMW Curved Display, is joined by a ‘floating’ armrest with integral control panel. We also agreed that the centre console is amongst the best designs we have encountered, with everything perfectly placed for optimum convenience.
The BMW Operating System 9 also paves the way for a highly customisable selection of additional services, including BMW Digital Premium, allowing customers to enjoy in-car use of all the apps available in the Kingdom.
As involved as this system may sound, we found it pretty easy to navigate and soon had a solid grasp on much of what this superior setup had to offer. Other must-mention tech features of our test-drive model included the standard smartphone integration for both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a superb Harman Kardon sound system and a smartphone tray with indirect illumination and wireless charging.
As one would expect from a BMW, engaging the ignition of our X2 sDrive 18d was a satisfying moment. The capable four-cylinder, BMW TwinPower Turbo petrol engine not only delivers the right sounds but a max output of 150hp and a max torque of 360Nm.
When out on the tarmac, this powerful engine coupled with a seven-speed Steptronic transmission with double clutch meant a responsive and sporty driving experience.
Although accelerating off the mark was slightly slower than expected, we discovered that once the car was up to speed, it answered the request for more power far quicker. Even at higher speeds, we established that the handling and braking were reliable and sharp.
Once we shifted the car into Sports Mode, the acceleration became far more responsive and, despite the handling loosening up slightly, we always felt in complete control of the driving experience.
Adding to the sense of security in the X2 is the range of standard safety and driver assistance systems. These include the latest Front Collision Warning system, Cruise Control with brake function, Speed Limit Info, Lane Departure Warning with lane return and Parking Assistance, including Reversing Assist Camera and Reversing Assistant. Many additional options are available upon request.
In the X2, BMW have created yet another outstanding SUV. The interior and exterior designs, the provided tech and safety systems and the responsive performance, all showcase the brand's exceptional design and construction capabilities.
