A refrigerator for your changing needs

THE REFRIGERATOR IS one of the most important home appliances in a modern home as it is crucial in extending the shelf life of food items and maintaining their freshness right until the moment they are used for meal preparation. However, choosing the right refrigerator for your needs is just as important as having one within the house. Other than the namesake twin cooling systems that prevent unpleasant smells by separating airflows in the freezer and fridge compartments, Samsung’s Twin Cooling Plus refrigerators come with five different operation modes that users can choose to suit their personal needs. What’s more, the separate cooling systems are able to preserve the original flavors of fresh food in the fridge compartment for longer by maintaining humidity levels by up to 70%.

More than just your typical refrigerator, the Samsung Twin Cooling PlusTM refrigerator offers unparalleled storage flexibility with up to 5 different combinations with a touch of a button

Here are likely scenarios in which the Samsung Twin Cooling PlusTM refrigerator with Smart Conversion can prove to be an invaluable aid to homeowners:

01

In Freezer-Fridge mode, the independent twin cooling system stops odours from spreading, thus keeping the full flavour of stored ingredients intact.

02

Energy-Saving mode shuts down the upper freezer to conserve power, while keeping the bottom fridge running for grocery storage.

03

Save energy with Vacation mode while away. This configuration turns off the fridge but allows the freezer to stay operational.

** Some models are not supported. * Prevent mould and odour by keeping compartments at 15°C using minimal power, even when fridge/freezer functions are turned off.

VISIT WWW.SAMSUNG.COM/SG/TWINCOOLINGPLUS TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT THE TWIN COOLING PLUS REFRIGERATOR

04

Be the best host with Fridge Max mode that ensures everything stays fresh, even when both compartments are packed with goodies.

05

Mini mode confines power to the freezer, effectively converting it into a mini-fridge that continues to preserve your fresh produce.

T

hanks to a wide variety of local furniture stores that cater to different tastes and preferences, searching for the right home collection is byand-large a straightforward affair in Singapore. However, when it comes to finding a onestop shop, you will be hard-pressed to find another that matches the uniqueness of Knots Living. Located within a quiet industrial estate in Paya Lebar, Knots Living is a three-in-one furniture store that also houses a cafe and flower shop in its 2,600-square foot space. The business is helmed by Knots Living founder Soh Yee How, who is the owner of flower delivery service XpressFlower. Drawing inspiration from a small florist-cum-coffee shop that he encountered while holidaying in Hong Kong, Yee How was motivated to establish a similar business in Singapore. “Bringing together a furniture store and a florist shop is not an easy task, much less integrating a cafe into the

18 MAR

same space,” shares Yee How. “You are toeing a thin line between the different zones that each business occupies, simply because it is quite difficult to have furniture, pots and customers next to each other.” Despite the inherent challenge, Knots Living does an excellent job in marrying the different segments of its business with the help of a well-thought-out interior. Although the store’s decor is largely dominated by grey cement screed walls and a matching linoleum floor, the hardness of these elements are offset by vibrant displays comprising colourful stoneware ornaments and pots of blooming flowers that are found throughout the entire space. Customers can sit back and enjoy a nice hot cuppa in the cafe area, which emulates the feel of an outdoor garden. Likewise, a collection of handcrafted furniture – including a mahogany-topped dining table and Gmelina wood bar stools with galvanised iron legs – serves to enhance the cosy atmosphere of the space. Most notably, almost every piece of furniture in the cafe is available for purchase, including the very dining chairs and tables that customers use. The furniture gallery is visually similar to its cafe counterpart, being replete with various hardwood pieces from the Philippines. Iconic pieces displayed here, include an intricate tripod floor lamp with a foldable natural walnut-slatted shade, as well as a generous buffet table that comes equipped with extendable shelves. In addition, a collection of home accessories, such as dried flowers in bell-jars and frame-mounted deconstructed cameras, ties in well with the different aspects that make up Knots Living’s varied yet harmonious identity.

Tay Tzeyu and zhiying isabel lim, textile print designers We speak to the enterprising pair about their print works and what it is like to draw inspiration from Mother Nature interview Stanley Lim Photos Litile Collective Tag Team Zhiying (left) and Tzeyu seek to create works that inspire an appreciation for nature.

whaT is The sTory behind The name of your sTudio liTile ColleCTive? Zhiying: Actually we are also not sure how the name came about! I thought it was a fusion the words “little” and “textile”, but apparently Tzeyu thought it represented the core of our collaboration as a humble little studio that grows organically alongside our collection of works. whaT made you deCide To form a parTnership wiTh eaCh oTher? Tzeyu: The experience of working together in school seeded the idea of starting our own little studio. After graduating, we were unsure about how we could play a role in the design industry, so it was quite natural for us to continue working together and discover ourselves during this journey.

Timeless Tarp The T-series collection features quirky prints printed on various sewn tarpaulin accessories.

Can you Tell us more abouT The differenT Types of prinTs ThaT you have CreaTed and how They Came To be? Zhiying: We share a common interest and curiosity about nature so our prints are mainly based on observable organic elements and phenomena. However, we were dismayed to find that the natural world is almost always depicted in the form of floral patterns and we sought to find an alternative way of understanding and representing nature. Hence, most of our prints are based on uncommon plants and fruits, such as mushroom gills, bittergourd and lotus roots.

Tzeyu: Using the kugua (bittergourd) as an example, we love the bittergourd fruit but we also know many people who absolutely hate it. And so both of us sought to find a way of representing the mild sweetness that is present in the bitterness of the fruit. This inspired us to print brightly-coloured wave patterns on drawstring bags, which are in turn reminiscent of a kugua’s ridges. aparT from sCreen prinTing, whaT kind of TeChniques do you all employ in CreaTing your works? Zhiying: We find that we can discover surprising detail and perspective through material exploration. We do quite a fair bit of relief printing – basically inking whatever natural resources we

have gathered and then observing the prints that emerge.

Tzeyu: Apart from sketching, one of our favourite tools is the digital scanner app. We often play and iterate on a digitalised doodle or image and see where it brings us. whaT do you do To sTay inspired? Tzeyu: Pinterest works for me! I can spend hours endlessly browsing online. It gets me thinking about possibilities. I’m also inspired by my day-to-day travels as they give me time to space out and observe my surroundings. I also like to pick up and examine fallen plant parts as I find them fascinating.

Zhiying: I like browsing the creative works of others online, but too much of it makes me feel small and fearful about stepping out to work out my own ideas! Recently, I’ve also realised that I need regular retreats into natural spaces, like Bukit Timah and MacRitchie Reservoir, to gain fresh perspectives.

renaissanCe man Mario believes that his architectural training has made him more attuned to geometric shapes and details.

22 MAR

you’ve worked wiTh various iTalian designers – did ThaT impaCT your design perspeCTive? From the great architect Marco Zanuso I took the passion for technology and spatial organisation of design. From Achille Castiglioni I took the irony and the desire of continuosly getting involved in new challenges. But the most important thing he taught me was his ability to simplify even the most complicated things.

when did you firsT realise your passion for design? I have the propensity to design from a very young age, but the moment when I realized what I wanted to do in life was in the ‘70s, when I walked into Splugen Brau brewery in Milan designed by Achille Castiglioni.

how would you desCribe your aesTheTiC? I think the common thread that ties all my projects is the attention to details. In general, when I design I look for an idea that reaches the ability of communicating a message. This happens within my architectural matrix that pays great attention to geometry.

where do you geT your inspiraTion? Ranging from design of very small objects to big urban planning is complex, the transition from one scale of the project to the other requires a lot of attention, and at the same time, flexibility. It’s this transversal nature that inspires many of my works, because, by the necessities of architecture I take the inspiration to develop design projects. My architectural matrix helps me a lot. Other times I find inspiration from nature, history, art and love for life. Every project comes from something special that triggered the inspiration to draw a new idea.

do you have any adviCe for aspiring designers? I can recommend a moment of reflection on what the purpose of a designer is. Today, I see a lot of attention to the form and less to the meanings. The only advice I can give to young designers is to think of design as a tool that improves the quality of life and where aesthetics have a functional foundation more than a formal one.

whaT was your inspiraTion for The Tiffany ColleCTion? The Tiffany collection is my first collaboration with Entune Living, and it blends two different aesthetic cultures, an exchange of views between Chinese and Italian decor. Since the beginning we wanted to create a collection that could interpret the contemporary styles of the globalised world and at the same time could become evergreen. Tiffany was inspired by the play of light and shade created by the union of the various components. I think that the distinctive feature

ith the opening of Ola Beach Club, there is one more reason to visit Sentosa. Designed as a Hawaiian-themed family destination, the 20,000-square foot venue is a water sports station, bar, restaurant and beach hangout all rolled into one. As the island’s only place that offers Jetpack and Jetblade rentals alongside more

traditional water sports, we can see it becoming very popular with thrill-seeking families. For those who prefer to take it easy, Ola Beach Club comes up tops too. With its prime position right at the heart of Siloso Beach and its laidback Hawaiian-themed decor – which is all distressed wood, bamboo decks, rustic greenery and kaleidoscopic murals – the place encourages one to spend the entire weekend in a tropical daze. Step through the oversized barn doors into a bright and airy outdoor

dining spot complete with striped umbrellas, daybeds, cabanas and a 20m pool. You’ll also find a ceiling lined with pre-loved surfboards and colourful murals, one of which depicts the sunset view of Diamond Head Volcano and the ocean in O’ahu, where Ola’s owner Christina Tan hails from. All these make for the perfect setting for relaxed dining. Choose a seat at the ground floor al fresco zone, sink your feet into the sand and order up a hearty feast of the Ahi Poke Bowl ($20) comprising diced raw tuna marinated in either shoyu, kimchi or togarashi dressing, cold Saimin Salad ($15) with homemade fishcake, spam and omelette, and tender Grilled Octopus ($18.50) served with house-made garlic and saffron mayonnaise. while day curtains are most commonly used to shield a home from prying eyes, they can also be used indoors to give tight spaces a light and airy feel. a wall of translucent curtains can make for a game-changing privacy barrier for homeowners with space concerns, as they do not take up as much room as a solid partition or create an impenetrable divide between zones. in addition, their vertical profile can make a small room appear taller by introducing straight lines that extend its height visually. tiP: Translucent white day curtains work best in creating that soft, gentle feel at home.

concealed storage options are another easy tweak that is worth exploring when planning the layout of a small interior. apart from cutting back on visual clutter by providing a convenient space to stow away belongings and/or appliances that are not in use, hidden storage options can also double as a point of interest within a home. pull out a panel of siding shelves that blends into an innocuouslooking wall structure or reveal hidden compartments behind doors when visitors come over and they are bound to be impressed by the ingenuity behind these secret hideaways.

return to the foLd picking out new furniture might be a crucial step when it comes to brainstorming for a new home design, however this process requires more than a keen sense of aesthetics. furniture arrangement matters when it comes to maximising space in a small home, and foldable furniture are your best allies in this situation. feel that you have too many (foldable) pieces cluttering up the place? simply pack them away to open up more space in the blink of an eye.

as a rule of thumb, white is the best colour to choose for small spaces. by reflecting light to create a bright and airy atmosphere, an all-white interior can trick the mind into thinking that a home is larger than it actually is. Just remember not to go overboard, unless you are aiming for a sterilelooking interior. instead, throw in splashes of complementary neutrals, such as matte black or brown wooden textures for a more varied look.

tiP: not one for wall-to-wall mirrors? Individual ones work just as well.

more than just a simple fixture for checking yourself, mirrors are one of the best furnishings to include in a small home. apart from serving as beautiful accent pieces with their lustrous surfaces, they are also capable of opening up the look of otherwise claustrophobia-inducing spaces. place a large floorlength mirror in a tight zone, such as a corridor or small hallway, and it will extend the look of its surroundings by drawing the eyes upwards along its vertical frame.

07

if you live in a small home, it can be impractical to have multiple pieces of standalone furniture as they can eat up precious space very quickly. needless to say, your best allies would be multipurpose furniture that are capable of serving a variety of different functions. from coffee tables that can transform into a console to comfy sofa beds, there seems to be no end to the versatility of these creative fittings that are capable of freeing up muchneeded room.

wraP round as the oft-heard saying goes, “when life gives you lemons, make lemonade”, it is entirely possible to make the most of out of a small home by taking advantage of its compact space. one way to do this is to maximise your furniture arrangement by adopting a “wraparound” concept. for instance, it is possible to keep everything in easy reach within a small bedroom by building storage options, such as open compartment racks and storage shelves, around the perimeter of a bed.

sLip and sLide as compared to their regular hinged cousins, sliding doors are a better option for small homes due to their functional design that goes well with tight spaces. besides saving precious room with their compact panels that disappear into a side pocket, sliding doors are a safer choice for tight zones as you will not run the risk of accidentally hitting someone in a narrow entryway or corridor. to top it off, some sliding doors can give the illusion of a wider space as they can be merged into a wall to fully reveal the inside of a room.

M o n o chro M e this two-tone scheme can seem restricting and probably flat to those who love colour but with the right application, it can be bold and impactful. Designer Joey Khu from Joey Khu interior Design thinks that while using white tones alone is a safe and classic option for small spaces, it can be too clean and clinical. “most people shun dark colours in fear that it can diminish their small rooms,” he says. “to not let the colour close the room in, assess the natural light source of your space and use white for that area to amplify the natural lighting. You can then consider using black for the other walls.”

Although natural floorings possess inimitable qualities, they require more TLC as compared to synthetic tiles. Tougher alternatives such as porcelain and ceramic that bear the facade of natural materials – and acing the imitation game – are better built for places that demand heavy-duty surfaces. What’s more, these pocket-friendly alternatives are less susceptible to scratches and marks, making them the ideal solution for homes with boisterous little ones and furry friends.

They come in an astounding array of designs, from Moroccan inspired to modern geometric, giving homeowners the liberty to craft a specific look for their space. Aesthetics aside, these surfaces are predominantly made from robust materials like porcelain and ceramic. Thus allowing for applications even in high traffic zones.

ceramic tiles with a fabric appearance imbue a sense of cosiness into the more intimate areas of a home.

Patterned tiles include cement tiles as well. Unlike porcelain and ceramic though, these are more porous as they’re made from a mixture that comprises cement. I’d advise using them as accents. defining spaces wiTh floors

Design by the 80's stuDio

Traditionally, rooms were boxed up by walls. And then the open-plan layout came into the picture, removing visual obstacles in favour of a free-flowing space. Dividers, decorative accents, and even rugs took over the role of segregating areas. Now we’ve got a novel way of defining zones without dividing them: by using flooring treatments. Instead of covering an entire room with the same surface, designers are using two different treatments that meet and mingle harmoniously – or even clash to create a graphic impact in a dwelling. Smart and statement making.

W

hen it comes to creating a smart home, customisability is key. From smart locks that keep your home interconnected to remotelyoperated washing machines, there is seemingly no end to the number of technologies that can grant us greater convenience as we go about our day-to-day lives. Consequently, seeking out the right equipment is the first step to creating a high-tech living space that is truly your own. We simplify things by sharing a couple of devices that each addresses the specific needs of seven distinct personalities – which one of them are you?

Convenient and secure, smart locks are essential for any connected home. However, be sure to take into account your door's dimensions before installing one.

The Cautious Homeowner

Yale Z Wave Deadbolt Lock; Price: From $649 at selected authorised dealers

If given the opportunity to install a particular smart home appliance, a Cautious Homeowner is most likely to opt for a digital lock as their fixture of choice. Capable of providing both security and convenient access, these devices are said to be the next generation of residential locks for smart homes that make use of Z-wave networks. An example is Yale’s YRD220 Z Wave lock that secures a home’s entrance through three different methods. Homeowners can choose to remotely control the lock by either using a mobile application or by keying in a personal PIN code through an interactive touchscreen. Of course, there is also the traditional key, which grants fuss-free access in the event of a flat battery or electronics malfunction.

The Savvy Customer

Singtel SmartHome Starter Kit; Price: From $25/$75 per month for 24 months (with Singtel Fibre) at Singtel shops or Singtel retailers

As a Savvy Customer, sniffing out a good deal comes naturally to you. Whether it is that affordable HD TV that you picked up at the IT sale this week or the comfy leather sofa that you got for a steal at last month’s furniture show, nothing escapes your sights when it comes to maximising every dollar that you spend. And much like making your next shrewd purchase, creating a smart home is a process that involves searching out a fair deal. If you are a Singtel Fibre user, we recommend the Singtel SmartHome starter kit. Apart from supplying subscribers with a hub device, the starter kit also lets them choose between two packages that either offer a contact sensor ($25/mth) or a smart door lock ($75/mth) as accompanying devices. For those who wish to further customise their home’s automation processes, other compatible Wi-Fi add-ons, such as smart plugs and motion sensors, are also available for purchase with the packages.

As such, Fibaro’s Smart Wall Plug is a must-have device for any eco-friendly homeowner. Featuring a one-of-a-kind design, the plug possesses a crystal LED ring that conveys information about the performance of a plugged-in appliance – such as its temperature or electrical load – by changing colour. What’s more, the Plug also alerts users to short-circuited devices via smartphone notifications and enables remote wireless control of connected gadgets, like televisions and game consoles.

The Style-Conscious Homeowner Aeotec MultiSensor 6; Price: From $95 at selected authorised dealers

For the Style-Conscious Homeowner, interior design is the process of coming up with a personal space that combines both form and function for the perfect living environment. This procedure not only involves installing fittings that match the look of a room, but also calls for the omission of any extraneous appurtenances that do not serve a decorative or functional purpose. Based on these criteria, the Aeon Multisensor 6 is an elegant gadget that is sure to make the cut in a Style-Conscious Homeowner’s abode. Belying its small size of 1.2cm, the unobtrusive Multisensor is a powerful device that can capture motion, temperature, light, humidity, vibration and UV data for a wide variety of home automation processes, from controlling motorised curtains to managing air conditioning. tylish in appearance yet filled with comfort – contemporary-style homes often make for delightful family abodes with their spacious rooms that incorporate up-to-date decor elements, which highlight and communicate their owners’ sense of individuality. Things are no different at this striking 4-room HDB unit occupied by a young family of four. The look of every nook and cranny in this apartment was well thought-out by Bowerman Interior Planner designer Chris Huang, who took great care in creating a varied yet complementary visual flow throughout the various rooms. Taking things to the next level, however, is the apartment’s brand new layout, which plays an important role in giving it a neat and tidy appearance. As per the client brief for a functional and stylish abode, Chris completely transformed various parts of the home by tearing down existing structures and erecting various space-saving solutions in their place for a more open look.

One particular example would be the entertainment room that was customised to include a wall of cabinets that fully maximises vertical storage space, while cutting down on both visual and physical clutter. A similar modification was also made to the children’s bedroom, where a row of overhead cupboards was created above the sleeping zone as a convenient hideaway for personal belongings, such as books and toys. Comfort and cosiness were also chosen as key decor themes to create a hotel-like interior, which the homeowners can retreat into following a hectic day at work.

“For this project, we chose to utilise a variety of construction materials and finishings for a more versatile look. And this is to allow flexibility in decor as well as to accommodate possible revamps of the space when the homeowners’ children grow older,” says Chris. “For example, concrete was chosen for the main living space as well as the entrance hallway’s flooring, as this would eliminate the need for hacking during future renovations, while giving the house a raw, stylish look.” Indeed, a cave-like comfort can be found in the living room where dark neutrals take centrestage. The master bedroom’s lamp-shaped cut out, framed leaves and offwhite laminates reflect the playful, natural aesthetic that the homeowners wanted.

As for the apartment’s kitchen, a similar focus on organic elements helps to create a cosy environment that is reminiscent of a cafe. Separated into two distinct sections, the kitchen comprises a baking area as well as a combined food preparation and washing zone. However, commonalities can be spotted between both sections; these include a backsplash constructed using patterned tiles as well as ceiling cabinets clad in charcoal-grey and light walnut laminates. “As per the owners’ request for an open concept, two of the walls encapsulating the kitchen were demolished to make way for the current sink and the joint dining table,” shared Dan when asked about

the modifications made to the kitchen area. “And to prevent water from spilling out into the hallway, we made sure to install a sink barrier made out of black, tinted glass for a classier look.” Not unlike the rest of the apartment, the master bedroom similarly possesses a cosy atmosphere with its collection of comforting textures. A variety of grey and white shades was used throughout the space and can be found in the choice of bedding as well as the surfaces of the surrounding storage units. underpinned by several luxurious textures that include various glossy laminates, polished stone surfaces and wood finishes. For a start, the living room makes use of the aforementioned surfaces by incorporating them into the design of a custom-made TV console. Backed by a sectioned wall clad in walnut-brown wood laminates, the console also incorporates a jet-black granite shelf supported by a chamfered solid plywood base. Other fixtures, such as an acrylic white shoe cabinet and rectangular ceiling lights help to create a symmetrical balance with their boxy shapes.

In the adjacent dining area, a grey-grained marble table and a trio of fabric-topped chairs with walnut-coloured legs make for a simple but stylish set of dining furniture. Accenting the dining zone with their reflective surfaces, a spherical Tom Dixon copper lamp and a silvery mirror embedded within a carpented wall pair off well against each other. “Apart from its ability to expand the space visually, the mirror was installed due to the owners’ belief in feng shui, as its placement in a dining room traditionally symbolises a doubling of food and wealth for the entire household,” explains Elden.

Wood laminated vanities topped with black granite counters were installed in both spaces, along with transparent shower doors that free up visual space. However, the master en suite possesses a more refined look with its grey marble floor tiles that stand in contrast to the common bathroom’s rustic surfaces, which incorporate matte sandstone tiles for the dry area and homogeneous wooden tiles for the shower. hen it comes to first homes, most young homeowners would be particular about style and practicality in equal measures. After all, a home is where busy working professionals can truly relax and get away from it all. At the same time, functionality is key in compact homes to maximise every square inch of available space. This four-room BTO unit, home to young working couple Marcus and Gayle, best exemplifies the chic yet practical home that is so in demand in urban Singapore. One way Eddie and his team maximised the 914 square-foot space was by modifying the kitchen to include an opening at one of the walls to create a window. By carving out a window between the two spaces, natural light is allowed to stream into the kitchen from the dining area, which visually opens up the utilitarian zone. this zone is not all about function though. What’s more, a chalkboard wall works as a way to spice up the kitchen with personal drawings and messages all without taking up any floor space. Another strategy to open up the apartment with its originally tiny bedrooms is to combine two rooms to form a spacious master bedroom designed specifically to encourage rest and relaxation. Eddie explains, “The homeowners wanted a bedroom that was clean and restful, but at the same time fit in with the rest of the home’s aesthetics as this is where they would spend most of their time at home.”

EntrAnCE HALLWAy To give the entrance hallway an oriental touch, a Chinesestyle antique table and a hexagonal mirror were introduced to the space, along with a Buddha statue. Additionally, the wall facing the main entrance was outfitted with a generous mirror, consisting alternating panels of clear and tinted glass.

mAStEr bEDroom En SuitE The master en suite carries a distinctive outdoors feel due to the ubiquitous presence of wood panelling in the form of a resilient laminated floor and British-style privacy blinds. The same applies to a generous wooden shelf that houses a variety of toiletries and artificial flowers. To keep the space illuminated, floor lamps and a classy spherical chandelier were installed as well.

Dining ArEA Facing the living room’s Volakas marble-clad feature wall, the dining area possesses its own array of classy fittings, including an antique-style pendant lamp and a glass-topped dining table. Also of note are the rustic stucco wall and customised roller blinds that # o n t h e offer protection from outdoor elements. surface

Inspired and motivated to provide a complete package of services, The Orange Cube is equipped to take clients through design conception to building completion. As a result of this allencompassing dedication, the company has amassed an impressive portfolio in both residential and commercial projects ever since its establishment in 2003. With their can-do attitude and enthusiasm in design and offering impeccable service, it’s no wonder the company has gained a firm foothold in the interior design scene.

ovErALL Taking inspiration from Hamptons-style homes, the main living area shows off a predominantly neutral colour scheme that gives it an elegant look. White homogeneous tiles and subtle grey walls create a space that can be best described as bright and sophisticated. The living room was also outfitted with a white-and-gold chandelier for a classy touch. Close by, the entrance’s original shoe #natural rack was replaced with choice a custom-made solid Hamptons-style interiors plywood cabinet to often feature neutral colours provide additional and natural lighting, so include plenty of both storage space.

mAStEr bEDroom EntrAnCE The passage leading into the master bedroom possesses its own distinctive character. Ornaments, such as a warm pendant lamp and a classic speaker, add character to the space. The same can be said for the subtle decorative trimmings that run along the length of a dark oak door and into the inner resting area.

PrAyEr room Originally a bedroom, this space was modified into a prayer zone for the apartment’s owners. Part of the walls was removed to make way for an impressivelooking double door and the space’s flooring was redone with woodgrain-textured laminates. In addition, the room’s marble-topped altar was customised to include cabinets on both sides for storing items.

for a bright and breezy look.

Living room & bALCony In line with the choice of a neutral palette, the living room’s TV console comes dressed in Oregon-black laminates with a glossy finish, while gold brass knobs complete the fitting’s dramatic look. In contrast, the adjacent balcony features a simpler but equally elegant-looking console table with a white composite marble top and black powdercoated steel legs.

mAStEr bEDroom For a consistent look, the master bedroom was equipped with multiple downlights and cove lights to match those in other rooms. Neutral colours make their reappearance here, in the form of dark woodgrained laminates and light wood surfaces. Meanwhile, the privacy of the owners is well-ensured, thanks to a carpented barrier, which blocks off the changing area from the resting zone’s generous, full-length windows.

Starting out in the late seventies, Z L Construction was once the subsidiary company of a family-run corporation. Focusing on residential upgrades and HDB renovations, the firm believes in offering sincerity, honesty and quality assurance to its clientele. By building their reputation through the years, they have grown to become a trusted name for homeowners plus commercial and industrial customers alike. Armed with a team of trusted professionals, Z L Construction aims to provide top-notch personable service and quality workmanship for all customers.

LIvInG RooM The living room was extensively modified to create a space that satisfies the owner’s desire for a retro-style home. For instance, the flooring was redone with classic homogeneous tiles featuring rock contour lines, while glass blocks – a mainstay of ‘80s interiors – were installed at the top of the divider that separates the living space from the entrance. To add a spot of colour, a bright green sofa was included in the space as a way of breaking up the visual monotony.

PEt RooM DISPLAy CABInEt Originally a standalone bedroom, this space was converted into a feline-friendly zone with customised fittings. This is where the owner’s cats spend most of their time. Wood-laminated storage cabinets with tampered glass doors were suspended at different heights here, allowing them to be used as a playground structure by the room’s furry occupants. Furthermore, as wall-mounted compartments, these cabinets help maximise vertical space by serving as a display stand for a modest collection of soft toys.

KItCHEn Both the top and bottom rows of kitchen cabinets were dressed up in woodgrained laminates with a purple-red grain pattern for a touch of yesteryear charm. The same nostalgic treatment has been given to the backsplash, which features a row of purple mosaic tiles set against a background of wavy white tiles. In contrast, the countertop makes use of jet-black granite for a hardy, natural surface. Vintage wire-mesh glass also makes an appearance in the form of a partition window behind the kitchen sink.

A vintage feature or two, such as wired glass panels or a splash of bold colour, can help in accentuating a home’s retro look.

MAStER BEDRooM Perhaps the most interesting installation in the entire apartment, the master bedroom’s wardrobe doubles up as a divider that separates it from the adjacent space where the homeowners’ cats reside. Hidden behind a pair of laminated double leaf doors that blend in with the rest of the wardrobe, a clear glass partition allows the owners to check in on their pets easily.

MAStER BEDRooM InDooRS WInDoW Apart from the concealed inner wardrobe glass door, part of the master bedroom’s partition wall was replaced with a convenient glass panel, which serves the same purpose of allowing the owners to check on their cats from the comfort of their own quarters.

Here’s an easy way to add some attitude to your wall IMAGE COURTESY OF Ferm Living

An elaborate feature wall or fancy wallpaper may be great for large homes but they might not work just as well in compact spaces. If you have a small area you wish to jazz up, the key is to choose simple wallpaper designs while keeping the colour palette of the space muted. We love the speckled appearance of this terrazzo-lookalike wallpaper paired with royal blue panelled wainscoting – it’s classic with a subtle edge.
