cc | business spotlight Adrienne Herman grew up communicating with animals. She didn’t know it was a talent others didn’t share. It wasn’t until she was in her thirties and she took a health kinesiology class that she realized that she was receiving information that her peers were not. The animals Adrienne works with talk to her in a variety of ways. With some, she hears words in her head, or she may feel the emotion they are feeling; and for some, she sees a very explicit hologram, which shows her what the animal wants to communicate to her.

Adrienne has a background (B.A. and M.S.) in education and human psychology, but after 30 years of communicating with animals as a side business, she decided to become a full-time pet therapist. She opened her office in Carmel four years ago. And although she calls herself “A. Herman Dog Therapist,” she has worked with
dogs, cats, horses, rabbits, and amphibians. Adrienne’s goal is to help companion animals reach their optimum level of joy and health. She listens to what they have to say, and when appropriate she utilizes a variety of alternative modalities to help with their issues. She works with flower essences, aromatherapy, color therapy, mineral therapy, Reiki-type massage, and nutritional supplements, among others. One of her more unusual cases was a Border Collie mix named Harry, with whom she did a phone consultation with last year. Harry was a rescued dog living in Texas. His guardian said he was a perfect dog except for one thing. He kept chewing up their books! Harry told Adrienne that he wanted to be read to. They started reading to him and he has not chewed up another book since!

“V” is for VADER By Carie Broecker
Each new litter of Guide Dog Puppies are assigned a letter alphabetically Vader and siblings were all given “V” names. The primary job of a guide dog is to keep his two-legged companion safe, and that is a job that four-year-old Vader takes very seriously. Charlotte Brown developed cataracts at the age of four months. She had several surgeries and got artificial lenses that saved her sight for awhile, but at 11 years old, her sight began to fail again, and by the time she was 16 she only had pinhole vision. Charlotte is now 18 years old and legally blind. Charlotte first met Vader on her sixteenth birthday at The Seeing Eye®, a guide dog school in Morristown, New Jersey. When they first met, Charlotte was a little worried that Vader did not like her. Of course, he had just spent the first eighteen months of his life being raised

and trained by someone else, so it took him just a little while to switch his allegiance and affections to Charlotte. Within a few weeks, he only had eyes for Charlotte. Now, if she gets too far out of his sight, he does a soft whine. When he has his harness on, he knows he is working and watches out for her. He alerts her to overhead obstacles such as stop signs or tree branches. He will stop her if a car is backing out of a driveway or making a turn when she is crossing the street. Yes, Vader takes his job very seriously, and Charlotte’s safety is his main concern. Charlotte was attending Rains High School in Emory, Texas and was on the track team when she was partnered with Vader. She imagines what must have been going through Vader’s mind the first time she took him to the track. He took one walk around the course with her, then she had him lie down and stay. Without Vader by her side, she stepped up to the

runway, counted six long, fast left strides, planted her pole, and then hurled herself over 11 feet into the air to clear the bar. The look Vader gave her could have been translated to, “You can’t cross the street by yourself, but you can do that?” Vader was nervous for Charlotte and unsure of his role in this unusual activity at first. They didn’t teach him about this at guide dog school! Vader soon learned to relax at practices and competitions and came to realize that Charlotte knew what she was doing. Charlotte is not your average vision-impaired person. She comes from a family of sports enthusiasts and has two athletic, competitive brothers. She has played and competed in sports since she was five years old, including basketball, volleyball, track and field, soccer, gymnastics, and cheerleading. She recently won a bronze medal at the Texas State Track and Field Competition when she cleared a bar at 11 feet, six inches. That had been one of Charlotte’s goals for several years. With Vader by her side on the podium, she proudly accepted her

award. If Charlotte has a message for the world, it isn’t about pole vaulting and it isn’t about being blind. She said her message is about “finding something that makes you happy, and doing it no matter what obstacles are in your way.”

When pairing a guide dog with a companion, it is important that the personalities and the energy level are a match. Vader is perfect for Charlotte because he enjoys keeping up with her active lifestyle. Vader was Charlotte’s constant companion through high school and now he will be by her side at college. They are headed to Purdue University, where Charlotte received an academic scholarship and will start classes this fall. Vader doesn’t mind boarding planes and lying at her feet. He has gotten used to her independent activities like pole vaulting and swimming. He takes his work seriously, just like she does her academics. But just like Charlotte, he also likes to live life to the fullest. When he isn’t working, when the harness is off, “he a wild and playful dog who romps and plays Frisbee like a rambunctious goon,” says Charlotte. Charlotte wants to remind people not to pet or distract working service dogs. They have an important job to do and need to stay focused for the safety of their handler.

Laura Taylor has always been the kind of person who rescues animals. She has fostered for rescue groups and always keeps her eyes on various rescue sites to see who is in need.
Four years ago, Laura came across Jax’s photo on the Animal Friends Rescue Project website. Jax is an 8-year-old tri-color Australian Shepherd. In 2011, he had been found in Calaveras County after being hit by a car and left for dead. A Good Samaritan saw him in

a ditch and pulled over to investigate. When she discovered that he was still alive, she took him to the local animal shelter. The shelter contacted Animal Friends Rescue Project, and they took him into their program. ™

Jax had excessive nerve damage and had no use of his right foreleg. He went into foster care with AFRP staff member Sue Trapp, and she took him to swim therapy for several months with Becky Lewis of Motiv K9 Fitness. He had a list of people interested in adopting him, but they all wanted to wait until he could use his leg again. That was until Laura came along. Laura offered to adopt Jax “as is.” She was committed to taking him to water therapy twice a week at her own expense. Becky at Motiv K9 Fitness generously gave her a discount so Jax could continue his therapy until he regained the use of his leg. If he didn’t regain use of the leg, amputation was a possibility because if the nerve damage did not heal the leg could wither up and die and would become a health hazard for Jax. Laura was hopeful that Jax could recover, but was also willing to take whatever came along even if it meant ending up with a three-legged dog. After four months of therapy, Jax’s main issue was mental. The nerve damage was healed, but Jax had gone so long without using his leg, that he had lost muscle memory. He had forgotten how to use the leg. Laura remembers the moment Jax first put weight on his front leg. He was on the underwater treadmill. He usually skipped (meaning he didn’t bear weight on his injured leg), but right before her eyes, she saw him put his foot down and take a normal stride! Then he did it again

Besides Laura, Jax shares his life with an 18-yearold cat named Alaya who rules the roost and Laura’s 9-year-old son, Cody. Laura says that Jax’s intelligence is uncanny. He recognizes many words and seems to understand full conversations. He is a special dog who deserved so much more than what he was given early on. He was blessed to find his way into Laura’s family. ust minutes before the race began, Mikael looked down at Arthur who was sound asleep. “Is it time to wake him?” he asked his wife.

Was Arthur dreaming? Perhaps of another life? Was this his first race or had he raced before? With a gentle scratch behind his ear, Arthur popped up ready to go. This time he was officially entered in the race and this time it would be for charity and fun, and not life and death.
Indeed, Arthur had raced before. But he had not begun his last race with a full belly after sleeping in a warm house. In fact he had wandered the streets, hungry, lonely, and injured. His fate would begin to change when a kind stranger offered him part of his meal (a Swedish meatball). That kindness became an instant bond, one that Arthur would not easily let go of. The kind stranger was Mikael Lindnord, the team captain of the four-member Team Peak Performance, a group of professional Swedish athletes competing in the Adventure Racing World Series.
November 11, 2014 Ecuador In their final stages of a 440-mile race that took them across the Equator and over the Andes, the team prepared to begin a 40-kilometer trek through thick Ecuadorian jungle using only a map (no GPS devices allowed). Little did they know that their new friend had decided to join them. Already a few kilometers into the jungle, the team realized that the dog was following them. Continuing through the jungle and at times trudging through knee-deep mud, the dog refused to leave the team’s side. At one point, he

had become almost completely exhausted and needed to be pulled from the mud—but he still pushed on. Feeling better after wolfing down a few cans of food, when another team member fell ill from dehydration, it was Arthur who stood by him until he recovered. Race organizers warned the team against taking Arthur on the final section of the

course, which was a 30-mile kayak race. Respecting their wishes, the team pushed off from shore without Arthur, but refusing to be left, he began swimming after the team. This was too heartbreaking to witness, so Mikael quickly boosted Arthur into his kayak. Still soaking wet and freezing, Arthur was wrapped in a team member’s jacket.

After racing for six continuous days, the team paddled across the finish line in the Ecuadorian coastal town of Mompiche. Now with five team members instead of four and finishing in 12th place out 50 international teams from 30 different countries. Faced with huge amounts of paperwork, vet visits and phone calls, Mikael was determined to bring Arthur back to Sweden. “If Arthur can expend so much energy to stay with us, he deserves that I put out this amount of energy for him.”

all over the world. The race took place simultaneously in 35 different locations across 33 different countries. Arthur finished the race, although he was treated well, he had to endure 120 days in Swedish quarantine prior to running in it. He will now return to his forever home in Northern Sweden as a treasured member of the Lindnord family.

Dogscaping– The perfect solution By Pam Bonsper

y friend asked me if I knew any “dog scapers.” I said, "Yes, and mine is the worst. He tunnels under, jumps over, and digs up the flowers. As a matter of fact, I named him Houdini." "No, no, no," my friend said. "I said dogscapers as in people who will help landscape a yard to fulfill the needs of your dog." I looked at her in complete wonderment. "Never knew they existed." "Look it up," my friend said, "there's a lot of info online. Maybe it would be a good idea for you and Houdini." As soon as I got home I put in a search. Here's what I found: Dogscaping means landscaping your outdoor area with your dog's welfare in mind. In other words, make a comfortable, safe and FUN environment for Houdini so he'll be so happy he won't want to escape. Or if you have a digger, prepare an area without plants where your dog can dig to his heart's content. Dogscaping is based on the needs of your particular pet. Does she love to run the perimeter of the fence? Then don't plant trees or bushes along the fence. Plant them far enough away to provide a good running path. A chewer? Don't use wicker furniture. Does your dog have boundless energy? Consider adding a mini agility set. An important thing to think about: if your dog loves being outside, he probably spends more time in the yard than you do. So why design your yard just for you? Watch his habits, such as where he likes to run, where he likes to sleep, what he likes to do. Would a doggy door be helpful? A well-designed area for your canine companion will result in a happy and less anxious pet. A secondary outcome: he won't destroy the areas of the yard you want for yourself. Safety first: When assessing and preparing your yard or property for your dog's pleasure, take a look at possible dangers. Is the fence in good repair? Is it high enough? Made
with nontoxic materials? Are there soft and shady areas? How about plants? Do you know which plants are toxic to dogs? Did you know that apple, apricots, amaryllis, and aloe are? Those are just some of the plants that start with "'A." The ASPCA website has an entire list. You may be surprised how long it is. Don't forget to remove the cacti. They may be drought-resistant, but are very dangerous to snoopy snouts. Speaking of plants—has your dog ever dug up your newly planted flowers? Or eaten your beautiful tulips? An easy solution is to fence in your flower area, or plant flowers somewhere your dog can't access. Tired of trying to maintain a beautiful lawn? Has the drought turned your lawn brown? You might want to consider installing artificial grass. Coming in many varieties these days, it’s hard to tell that it’s not the real thing. Don’t forget to provide access to fresh water. Keep an outdoor bowl in the shade and topped with ice cubes on a hot day. It's just good common sense and a willingness to share your space with your dog. If you provide a playground, the children will come. If you provide a dog playground, your dog will be happy and stay there. I decided to became one with Houdini. I put my nose to the ground when he did, I ran back and forth and watched as he looked for ways to escape. He didn't seem to be interested in escaping at all. I realized it was because I was with him. It dawned on me that if I spent more time outside with him, it would solve the problem. So I decided to try “peoplescaping” and bought myself a comfy chaise lounge and portable umbrella. I sipped my lemonade in my shade and he planted himself under his favorite tree. And guess what? It was a cold night in London in 2012 when Haatchi, an adorable Anatolian Shepherd was abused and left for dead on railroad tracks, only to be hit by a train. Although his life was saved, his leg and tail were severed, and Haatchi was left disabled and dispirited. Owen, know to his family as Little B for “little buddy,” was born with a rare genetic condition that leaves him largely confined to a wheelchair. 2015 Spring Dog Festival Hosted by C-Dog (the Coastal Dog Owners' Group), the Spring Dog Festival is the biggest and best dog event in the Santa Cruz/Monterey area. The group announced that the nonprofit organization Unchained is the recipient of a $2,000 donation from funds raised at the event. Make a splash! Whether swimming for fitness or for physical rehabilitation, swimming feels good and energizes your canine. Did you know that not all dogs know how to swim? It does not matter what size dog you may have, warm water exercise is restorative. Exercise in warm water helps to keep the body in motion, especially for maturing dogs. After their swim, muscles are stretched out and limber, making them feel good.

Swimming is excellent exercise for dogs. Five minutes of vigorous swimming is equivalent to five miles of running! Also, when dogs swim they are using a different set of neuro pathways to make that swim motion happen, and swimming works on different muscle groups than when dogs are walking or running on land.

Half Moon Bay Revisited By Whitney Wilde
“This trip feeds my soul,” my friend Marilyn commented as we drove up Highway 1 to Half Moon Bay. Time zips by on the 50-mile drive north from Santa Cruz. On our right are rolling hills, redwood groves, marshlands, brussel sprouts, berries and farm stands (delicious pie at Swanton Berry Farm!). To the left are beautiful beaches, rocky cliffs, windsurfers, and if we are lucky, whales. Today, 18 dogs and 14 humans from Woofers & Walkers are taking a day trip to Half Moon Bay. Come along with us on our one-day vacation.

World famous surf spot, Maverick’s, is my favorite place to walk. One winter, the roar of 40-foot waves vibrated my whole body. Starting in a small parking lot, walk along the Pillar Point Marsh (keep your eye out for the fallen tree carved with whales, dolphins, and fish),

past the mouth of the harbor (and the memorial to surfers who have died here), to the beach. There are soooo many seashells here! Opalescent turban snails, cowries and rare sea urchin shells! This is an on-leash beach, but don’t be surprised to see dogs running free. You might also want to check out the Half Moon Bay Dog Park at the end of Wavecrest Avenue
adjacent to Smith Field. It is a local’s favorite. This is a 16,000 square foot fenced-in, off-leash park run by volunteers. It is a great place to bring lunch then watch your dog romp across the well maintained bark surface. After a day at the beach, there is no better place than Moss Beach Distillery to watch the sunset and get some good grub. Originally a speakeasy during Prohibition, the dog-friendly patio has fabulous fireplaces overlooking the ocean (but be sure to go inside and check out the beautiful stained glass windows). The Distillery has a dog menu, priced in bones, and the burger patties (5 bones) were a huge hit with all our pups. The crab & avocado quesadilla was heavenly and made me want to go back again and again. No complaints from any humans or dogs. As the sun set over the ocean, we sat around the many fireplaces, wrapped in warm wool blankets provided by the restaurant. The dogs settled all around us, tired from a day of running the beach. A perfect end to a perfect day – our bellies and our souls were full. This was just a day trip and a small sample of what Half Moon Bay offers dogs and their people. UnChained was founded by Melissa Wolf, whose growing awareness of animal cruelty gave her the determination to find a way to change it. Wolf returned to school for a degree in humane education and learned the solution was to use animals, not people, to encourage society’s awareness of animal welfare. Since her original concern was for shelter dogs, Wolf believed kids with a similar background could not only relate to them, but be motivated to teach dogs basic commands in order to increase their chances of adoption. “Young kids can save a dog’s life,” says Wolf, noting that it works both ways. As the children learn to bond and work with their dog, they gain selfesteem and discover ways to better themselves, thus improving their own lives. Or, as Wolf points out, they increase their own odds of staying alive at all. “Many kids have been told they will not survive into adulthood,” she says. They may have been born into families who, for generations have been involved in gang violence. They are sometimes witnesses to friends and family members killed at an early age.

Each dog is paired with two children, ages 11 to 18, for an eight-week session. They attend training sessions twice a week for two hours at a time. They learn to praise and encourage positive behavior rather than punish negative behavior, a way of teaching that is often at odds with the way they were raised. Each eight-week session uses three shelter dogs that can be any breed or mixed breed, from Pit Bulls to Chihuahuas. Candidates are thoroughly evaluated for temperament (shy dogs are considered, undersocialized or fearful dogs are not). The organization then works to get those dogs into foster homes. Wolf notes that UnChained has an 83 percent adoption rate within 30 days for dogs that have completed the program. Given that there is always a shortage of foster families, Wolf urged those wary of fostering
cc | for the dogs an animal for an indeterminate length of time to consider that success rate. “Most people can usually commit to two or three months,” Wolf says. Wolf continues to marvel at the remarkable changes in the dogs as they progress through the program. Like the kids they work with, these shelter dogs are eager to learn, if given guidelines, structure, and incentive.
Dogs need vacations too.
Those that seem to learn quickest, notes Wolf, are young dogs that lack even basic manners. Goliath is a good example. The 90-lb. Great Dane/Mastiff mix learned to roll over on his first day of class, perhaps because his trainer got on the ground, demonstrating how to do it. Roland also showed remarkable change within a short time. On his first day of class, Wolf notes, the little Chihuahua would not look at his trainer nor respond to treats. By the second class, Roland understood that the trainer was “his person” and quickly began to pick up the commands.

Roland, Goliath, and all the shelter dogs in between have been especially effective in teaching the kids impulse control. Managing a treat bag, clicker, leash, and commands forces the young trainer to both coordinate and find patience to wait for the right time to reinforce the desired behavior. As the weeks pass, Wolf observes how the children learn how to give rather than take, which also builds self-esteem and confidence. Besides learning how to teach basic commands, the kids are also educated about pet care, overpopulation, and breed stereotyping. They are not only equipped to bring this knowledge to their own dog, but to educate others.

“There is nothing we can’t handle.” Deleta Jones, a California native, started training dogs when she was 9 years old. Her first dog was a German Shepherd who needed a lot of training. She took classes from a neighbor and in the process discovered her calling. She quickly found out that she was a natural-born trainer, and she realized how much satisfaction she felt when her dog began to learn and their bond deepened. The center boasts seven beautiful acres, which include indoor/outdoor kennels, a one-acre training field, and an agility course. Deleta’s K9 Ambassador training center serves the gamut of training needs, including training for family pets, search and rescue dogs, and personal protection dogs. The center specializes in in-kennel training, in which they first train your dog, then bring you in and train you to help your dog reach his full potential. Deleta prides herself in taking on some of the harder cases that others can’t. She has helped many rescues with behavior issues such as fear and dominance aggression. When local veterinarians come across a dog with difficult behavior issues, they often refer their clients to Deleta. Deleta’s technique is to use positive reinforcement and tailor the training for each individual dog’s needs.

The language was introduced in the House by Congressman Frank LoBiondo (R-NJ) and the Senate by Senator Claire McCaskill (D-MO).
