and Happy New Year, from our family to yours!

Clarksville Living Magazine is published and distributed monthly at over 180 locations across Clarksville, Fort Campbell, Oak Grove and surrounding areas.

Publisher's note

As usual, this year has flown by and I can’t believe it’s December already. On a positive note, I will say that this holiday season definitely feels more normal that the last couple years, so let’s hope that keeps trending.

I am sure at first glance this month’s cover might have looked like a gingerbread house, but upon closer examination (and reading the caption;) you will see that this magnificent creation is made entirely of meats, cheeses, and other charcuterie ingredients. I first saw one of these scrolling through Instagram a few months ago and have been obsessing about them since. I am not sure if I have the patience to make one but I wanted to make sure that we shared this magnificent meat mansion with our readers in case they were looking for a way to take their holiday parties to the next level.

We have lots of great holiday info packed into this issue. Stephanie Cook has some healthy tips on how to avoid holiday drama, and Paige Eisemann has all the deets on the night of a million lights drive through Christmas Lights Spectacular that’s not to be missed. There’s also a coloring contest for the kiddos by Grace Dental where you can win some holiday cash, on page 20.

All of us at Clarksville Living wish you a merry Christmas and a safe, and happy new year. We hope you get everything you want, and especially what you need.

WHAT IS A CHARCUTERIE CHALET?

Obviously I had to jump on this new fad. Here’s my take on the trend with a few extra suggestions thrown in for good measure.

BUILDING THE STRUCTURE OF YOUR CHALET

Make it easy on yourself! Find a gingerbread kit and build off that. Zero judgement here, because that’s what I did.

frustrated by building the base. But you do you! It’s an option, and the important part is

to make this fun and festive.

THE BASE

One of the most common questions I received on Instagram after posting was, “what is the base?” So in addition to using a gingerbread kit to build the home, I placed everything on a Lazy Susan so that I could really get a good look at every side. I love being able to show off and easily access everything from a full 360° view!

I’ve heard of people making the structure from flatbread, which is some varsity-level food art right there. I’m no architect, and I’d honestly rather be decorating than

Once the main house elements were done, I covered the Lazy Susan in cream cheese and parmesan sprinkles (more on that below). This helped the landscaping elements stick.

INGREDIENTS TO MAKE IT A WINTER WONDERLAND

I’ve made mine all savory. But you could do a mix—some savory items, with some sweet ones too. You know I love a dessert cheese board. It really comes down to the shapes and colors you want to add in.

Besides the gingerbread house, think about what elements you want to have on your chalet: windows, landscaping, roof, and trimmings and characters. These should start to inform the colors, shapes, textures you want to look for in your ingredients. Here are some ideas based on what I made and what I’ve seen others make….

The House Details

• Cream cheese is your best bet for charcuterie chalet glue. Use it to make a beautiful, smooth snowy drift (on the rooftop or elsewhere).

• Salami and charcuterie are key. I placed salami rounds on the roof to make cute looking tiles. You could also make salami (or ham, or prosciutto!) rosettes for decoration around the chalet. Full tutorial here on making salami rosettes at bit. ly/3glRk8A

• Pretzel snaps (grid squares) make the perfect windows. You could also try triscuits

Yada's Darla Knight and Alicia Brewer, talking about their new brunch menu which has been two-and-a-half years in the making.

• Dried fruit is a good option for decor. I used half slices of dried oranges as window awnings/coverings.

• Longer crackers like rustic bakery flatbreads cut in half work as great doors. Just draw on doorknobs with edible ink markers. (both available at Amazon.com)

I also used these for the chimney on top, securing the four sides with cream cheese.

• Pretzel sticks give off a great log-cabin vibe. I used a few sizes and shapes for different aspects of the decor: windows, roof eaves, and some for “logs” in front of the chalet.

LANDSCAPING

• Rosemary makes for great trees and garden-like additions. Stand them up tall and affix them to a few more pretzel twists to help them stand. Or just lean them against the chalet.

Ho, ho, ho yum, yum, yum!

• Mushroom and thyme make for the cutest little planters around the chalet. I added some sugared cranberries for extra dimension.

• Sage is such a beautiful herb, and fragrant too. I piled leaves of it into circles to make wreaths on the front and back of the house.

• Marcona almonds (or regular almonds) make a great pathway up to the doorstep.

• Cut up tiny thyme sprigs along the almond walkway to create a cute landscaping detail.

I just stuck them into the cream cheese/ parmesan base on the lazy susan.

• Green olives could come in handy for garden landscaping too.

Characters

• Brie bites are so adorable. All piled up they make a pretty great snowman. Mine are secured with a skewer. I drew on the eyes, mouth and carrot nose with the edible ink markers. I get my brie bites at Trader Joe’s, you can also try Sam’s, Costco or even Amazon if you don’t have access to TJ’s.

• Babybel cheese is a staple on my boards. So it was a no-brainer to make a snowman and a Rudolf with them. Again, I used the edible ink markers for help with the faces and Santa suit. I used extra wax from the Babybels to create the red noses. For Santa, I added in a provolone beard and furry hat and stuck them on with cream cheese. See more details on my IG Reel How-To (coming soon).

• For Santa’s Sled, I used a double layer of La Panzanella Original Mini Croccantini Crackers, then laid down a few bread stick pieces to the front of the sled.

• Black olives put on skewers would make adorable looking penguins. I’ve seen these with mozzarella or cream cheese for the white belly.

Extras

• Any firm cheese, like a regular cheddar or provolone, can be cut out into shapes for bigger elements—like stars, Christmas trees, Santa, reindeer, or snowflakes (as did with the snowflake.

HOW TO MAKE IT SPARKLE

This was the most fun part! Grate some

8 Clarksville Living

parmesan into a bowl. Sprinkle it on top of your salami rooftop. Add it to any snowy sections you made with cream cheese. And give the rest of the yard a nice soft dusting of parmesan snow. This will really set it up to look so wintery (and yummy!). You can also use the royal icing that you would usually use on a gingerbread house. Or cream cheese—just make sure to keep it cold. If it gets too warm it won’t hold much up.

Tips for Making a Charcuterie Chalet

• If you've taken nothing else away from this charcuterie chalet recipe, I hope it is that cream cheese is key. Seriously, I used two tubs of it. Don't underestimate its magic in the process of creating a solid charcuterie chalet. It will get all over your hands but that's just part of the fun.

• Store any cream cheese you aren't working with in the fridge until needed to keep it spreadable yet stiff.

• You may need to shave the crispbread edges a bit to ensure they are straight and even. Gently run a kitchen knife back and forth along any uneven edges to accomplish this.

• Feel free to customize the ingredients to you and your guests tastes.

• Store your charcuterie chalet in the fridge until party time to prevent melting and shifting. I've made a charcuterie chalet the evening before it was needed and it was fine in the fridge although the cream cheese may crack a little in some places. I don't recommend making it any further ahead than that.

• To serve a charcuterie chalet at a party, include serving plates nearby and bowls of complimentary foods. Then prepare for your edible mini mansion to be destroyed before your very eyes. I mean, it's nice to look at but even better to eat, right.

Night of a million christmas lights

Where in Clarksville can your family see over three million Christmas lights? Only one place! Clarksville Speedway is welcoming visitors to enjoy their incredible display that features an astounding amount of lights on display within a lovely winding one mile drive.

For several years, the Clarksville Speedway Christmas Lights Drive Thru have been illuminating the holiday season for our community. The event is now in its eighth year and continues to grow. Widely known as the largest light display in the area, the drive thru is actually a full mile long. William Scogin and his team work all year long to put together creative and exciting displays for guests. Designing and building the displays, as well as maintaining them requires many hours of work. That work goes on year round, not just during the holiday season. The original displays were purchased, but now Scogin and his team build and create their own to continue the growth of the display. They have created lights that are unique and highlight the many special things about the Clarksville community, including a tribute to the 101st Airborne Division of the US Army, the racing community, and more.

Prior to the opening of the Clarksville Speedway Christmas Lights Drive Thru, families had limited options for lighting displays in our area. The popular Riverside Drive display is a fun option, but for people with mobility issues or those who are unable to brave weather and elements it wasn’t always feasible.

The speedway event provides an appreciated option to enjoy the lights from the warmth and comfort

of your own vehicle. There were a few drive thru displays in the Nashville area, but our speedway display has quickly become more popular. Country music stars have even made the trip to Clarksville in their tour buses to drive through and enjoy the display with their families. Local sports teams and scouting troops gather to drive through and enjoy the lights as a group. Many families share that being able to enjoy the lights with elderly family members who are unable to walk through other displays has meant that the whole family can be included in the joy of the holiday season.

Some evenings are busier than others, with weekend nights often being the busiest. The speedway crew handles the crowds well, making sure everyone enters the drive thru in a timely fashion, Keeping the wait brief is managed by opening more gates and keeping everyone moving to enjoy the holiday spirit. Christmas Eve and Christmas Day are usually exceptionally busy, but even then the staff works diligently to ensure that every vehicle moves into the display without a lengthy wait.

Opening this year on Saturday, November 26 and continuing through the first week of the new year to close on Sunday, January 1, 2023, the Clarksville Speedway Lights Drive Thru will likely delight almost as many people as there are lights on display. Tickets are available online as well as at the gate, and $5 off coupons are available in many locations around town and in local publications. Prices vary per vehicle: $30 per car load (7 passengers or less), $100 for Tour Bus (size), and $50 for Cargo Vans or vehicles exceeding 8 persons in a vehicle. The speedway team has also developed special admission nights to honor locals that can help you plan your family or group’s trip.

• Monday Nights- Working Man and Woman $25.00 No coupons needed

• Other Coupons are not valid on special price nights.

Gates open each night as darkness falls, and the route is open until 9PM on weekdays and 10PM on weekends. The Clarksville Speedway family invites the community to come out and enjoy their display, making their beloved speedway a part of your family’s holiday traditions. There is no place else in town where you can appreciate so many lights and see the evidence of year round hard work and talent on display for everyone to enjoy. artistic inspirations

Olasubomi Aka-Bashorun has become a fixture in Clarksville's burgeoning art scene. Ola, as his friends call him, opened DBO (Drafts by Ola) Gallery on 2nd Street in October, 2016. Since then, he has established himself as an integral part of our local community of artists.

“I've been downtown with a studio space for six years now,” Ola said. “As an artist, having a studio space changes everything. You can create more and teach more. And in my opinion when you teach, you learn.”

Ola says, when you teach, you start refining your own personal approach. He continues, “That has elevated my art. Of course, also doing the murals and other projects has as well. But, there is more play in it, with free time, and commissioned pieces, and the challenges brought by those commissions.

“You know, you're finding a way to make them happy and give them what they want, but sometimes they don't really know what they want. I, with my hands, have to bridge the gaps within their ideas.”

Ola finds all these challenges to be exciting. He is constantly trying new ideas, and new materials.

“Now, I just play more, like with fabric. A guy just challenged me by bringing a bunch of shattered glass from his house. He wants me to create a massive piece for his living room using shattered glass, but he doesn't want a mosaic. It's all one color. So, now it's like okay. Oh, and we have to do it so it's not crazy heavy. Awesome. Yeah, so that's a challenge.”

Ola says his primary medium is probably graphite, but, he doesn't do much of it.

“Nobody wants to pay for it, so I got into painting, because I wanted to be an artist full-time. Graphite is fun, but it takes forever to do. My favorite medium is stained-glass, but, no one wants to pay for that either. In order to do art for a living, I had to figure out what actually sells.”

So, how many full-time artists are there in Clarksville?

“Most local artists aren't full-time. I don't know too many in Clarksville that are full-time, that are my age. We have some older local artists who are fulltime. There are definitely some younger artists here, like my friend Jackie Lewis. I also have quite a few friends in Nashville that are full-time artists. We all took different paths to get to this point. I chose to stop doing work, just be broke for a little while, and figure it out. So, it's my job.”

Ola says, one friend chose to hire an agent, other friends worked full-time jobs while creating fulltime. When their art income hit a certain point, they were able to quit their day job. But, it's not easy.

Looking around Ola's gallery, you see a variety of artwork on display, including work by other artists. There are also multiple work stations, where Ola and other artists teach various types of art to students of all ages.

One piece that will grab your attention is a highlytextured fabric on canvas.

“Yeah, so that's really cool,”Ola said. “The fabric thing probably started about four months ago, out of a dream. I was working on all those ballerina pieces, which was all about capturing movement, then I had a dream that I was going to do my 2022 self portrait in fabric, but, it was like in the dream I conceived the entire process.

“So, I came into the studio at four o'clock in the morning and started messing with the fabric. Now, I've done the big piece in The Mailroom, that has nothing but fabric and a canvas. I've also done a few abstract pieces with fabric.

Another new direction for Ola came directly from an interaction with one of his students.

“I teach art, and do art therapy as well,” Ola said. “Recently, one of my student's wife said to me, why don't you paint the military stuff? I'm like, I was never in the military. but they are in our hearts. I don't want to do it just because. If I'm moved to do it, I'll do it.

“But, I'm constantly telling her husband - no idea is a bad idea. You know, sometimes you just gotta go with it. I might have to eat my words. She gave me a great idea, and I said no, initially. But, I'm always telling her husband and my other art therapy students that they should just go with their ideas. Just do it.

“So, I'm actually doing this series, and he was my first person. I'm doing a total of six pieces. I'm talking to Veterans and active duty military. I'm saying to them okay, what type of art, and why. So, he mentioned two different things.

THE ARTS

Photos and article by Tony Centonze

“He said, once you join in, you get stripped down to your underwear, essentially. Literally, when you arrive at training camp, they strip you down to the bare nothing. Then they bring you back up. They want you to become who they want you to be, part of something bigger than yourself. It's essentially one you, one unit.

He also mentioned that he loved the tactical gear. He worked with the Special Forces guys and tactical gear, and I was like okay, cool. So, this piece shows a soldier in tactical gear, and a civilian with war paint.”

Ola says he played with the idea of making the subject somewhat ambiguous, and pieced together ideas from several photographs to create this first image.

This opened the door for Ola to talk about his teaching.

“Yeah, the teaching is good,” Ola said. “I've got a plethora of students. Obviously, I do private art lessons, which is what I'm doing all day today. I've recently started bringing in new instructors to teach workshops. Everyone knows me as the painter, but I know stained-glass better than I know how to maneuver paint. I am going to bring some stained-glass artists in to do a workshop, and invite

whoever wants to come.” Ola is also working on a figure drawing event. He has been contacted by a woman from Florida who wants to come to his studio and offer a workshop with a nude model.

“Somebody just invited me, last night, to an artists Facebook group,” Ola said. “It's just artists, and it's a chat where you tell each other about shows that are coming up, and current projects. It's just for creatives. It's pretty exciting. I asked why they started the page. They said, we need a way for artists to communicate. These are all Clarksville people. I'm telling you, I was maybe the 93rd person to be invited. I'm like, where are all these people?

The Facebook group Artists of Clarksville already has 231 members, which surprised Ola.

“231 current members, that's wild,” Ola said. “I think this is the kind of thing that will help build our community, and let us come together and do stuff. There are things popping up like River City Clay on Franklin Street. That's a new studio that's joining in the Downtown Artwalk.

“I think that the number of places showing art is actually increasing. The Vine on Franklin wants to be part of Artwalk. Two Birds Coffee Co. has been participating for six or seven months. The art of Jackie Lewis is currently on display there.”

Ola says that the local art scene has expanded beyond the DAC (Downtown Artists Co-Op) and is continuing to spread.

Thursday,” Ola said. “That's mind-blowing, and people don't know about it. I think the creatives know what they're doing, but we have to get the word out to the public. At one point there were like 16 or 18 places participating. That number dropped for a while, but now it's starting to climb back up. So many people come in my gallery and don't even know about Artwalk ”

Ola suggested that the media needs to really put information about artists/art events, and Artwalk on blast. He also talked about a few of his favorite local artists.

“Some of my favorites include Frank Lott, and Kitty Harvill,” Ola said. “I love all the older guys, like all of them, the teachers, the professors. And. what's so crazy is, traditionally, when you flip through old

artists you think they only have one style, but these guys can do everything, like Jim Diehr. He's probably my favorite of everybody.

“Yeah, and watercolors. I won't touch that, but these local artists make me want to do watercolor because they're all really good at it. I really like how Diehr opens up his home studio, and lets people come in and walk around, check it all out. But the public doesn't know about it.”

Ola says Clarksville's artist community has always been a close-knit group, but he thinks it's time to get the word out.

“I saw Clarksville's potential,” Ola said. “I believe, for any major city to thrive it has to be surrounded by something creative. New York had dance, then

all the other arts, Chicago started with visual art, Nashville started with music. Some form of art makes a city thrive. And when I came here, I said, okay, they've got the DAC and APSU has a really good art program. They also have a really good music program, which I didn't even know until I ran into somebody.

“I was like, okay, this city really could be fantastic, with all sorts of arts. We have a theater that does a great job, and has great shows. They're hilarious, and they change things up. It's unique to Clarksville. If we can bring these different types of art/artists together, we can create a community. An actual community will draw out all the creators, and we'll all thrive from it.”

s a life coach who focuses on relationships, a common concern I hear from clients is “How do I get along better with my family during the holidays?”

Family dynamics are complicated and none of us has a perfect one. Obviously, some issues are likely to cause more conflict and stress than others, but it is likely that no matter how much you adore your family, the possibility of prolonged exposure paired with the pressure of the holiday season can be the recipe for a perfect storm.

With that in mind, here are five things to consider for minimizing holiday conflict with your family.

1. Communicate clear expectations. My family will tell you that we’ve learned this one the hard way. My tendency has been to create a Hallmark movie holiday in my head and then expect my family members to ensure that it happens without ever telling them what is expected. In fact, I may have even been guilty of thinking, “If they loved me, they would know!” As a result, our ghosts of Christmas past include numerous Christmas Card photo sessions that ended in tears, hurt feelings over returned gifts, and family game nights that resulted in hours or even days of the silent treatment.

Here's an example from my own life. A few years ago, when my children were in college, they would come home for the holidays and I hoped to at least get an evening or two together as a family, but I never told anyone that is what I wanted. Instead, each night when they would make plans with their friends or choose to watch TV in their rooms, I would pout. I would even feel sorry for myself and the narrative in my head would start to play that they don’t want to hang out with me (which may have been slightly true too…lol). But once I got brave enough to simply ask for time with them, they were happy to comply!

It is quite common that we experience disappointment or even anger with our loved ones because they don’t live up to what we expect from them. But if they don’t know what those expectations are, there is a 100% guarantee they won’t meet them.

Think about what you hope for, communicate it respectfully but also realize that you may have to compromise to make things work.

2. Avoid assumptions. My Enneagram teacher taught me a word that I use almost daily around assumptions. Assumicide. When we are not able to consider the viewpoints or experiences of others outside of our own, we assume that we understand their thoughts, feelings,

and behaviors much more than we do. As a result, we ruin our own experiences by allowing our emotions to get the best of us.

Consider this scenario. Your sister-in-law is unusually quiet during the holiday meal and seems to be withdrawing from the conversation. You have never really been a big fan anyway, so you begin to make judgments about her behavior and assume she doesn’t want to be there. On the other hand, she has gotten some bad medical news from a very close friend who has asked her not to share it with anyone. She is doing all she can to hold it together without crying over the ham and dressing while you are becoming angrier by the minute because of her “rude” behavior. Eventually this leads to a blow up with your brother that takes weeks to recover from. All because of assumicide.

If you want to assume anything, assume positive intentions.

3. Pick Your Battles. Before you reply to the snarky comment made by your third cousin or dive into the political discussion with your great uncle, stop and think. “Is this worth it?” “What if I do vs what if I don’t?”

“Do I want to die on this hill?” If the answer is “yes”, then proceed with an understanding that the consequences might be worse than you considered. But if the answer is “no” then channel that beautiful voice of Idina Menzel and “Let it goooooo!”

4. Pre-establish your boundaries. Having a plan can be one of the best things you can do for yourself around family holiday time. There are so many times when boundaries are important but let me give you an example for consideration.

Maybe this is the first year that your child is really interested in Santa and he is up before the sun due to the anticipation of seeing what Santa brought. You helped Santa until after midnight so you are beginning your Christmas Day fun with four hours of not so sound sleep.

The plan for Christmas Day is to travel to your parents’ home for lunch and then travel another two hours to your in-laws for dinner putting you home after midnight. You are someone who requires sleep to function (we all do by the way, but that’s another topic). Going without sleep means you will be overly emotional, likely grouchy or you’ll fall asleep while the rest of your family enjoys their time together. And not to mention how your toddler will do without a nap or two throughout the day.

How likely is it that you will have a Merry Christmas?

Instead of putting yourself (and your child) through it,

set some realistic boundaries and communicate them. Just because this year you may choose to stay home and celebrate with your immediate family doesn’t mean it will be that way forever. But for this year, that may be the best option for everyone. Or maybe you choose to alternate parents’ houses for holidays to minimize the stress when your children are young. Only you can determine what is best for you and sometimes it means saying “no” because it is what you need to do even when it isn’t what you really want to do.

5. Identify your emotions. Family often brings out the best and the worst in us. As I’m giving thought to my own holiday, a few emotions I am almost certain to encounter include joy, nostalgia, love and gratitude. But, based on my past experiences, I may also feel comparison, envy, disappointment, resentment, and maybe even dread around some things. And that’s okay because I am a human being. And you are too.

Experiencing emotions is the way we know we are still living. But remember, your emotions will lie to you sometimes.

When you feel something, try to name it. Doing so gives you a much greater chance of knowing what to do with it. And remember, in any situation, you are the only person you have any control over and no one else can be responsible for your feelings. Sigh.

Hopefully you won’t need any of these tips this year, but if you do, I hope that one or more of them helps you to have your best family holiday ever. It is easy to take family for granted but I also encourage you to keep in mind that none of us knows what tomorrow holds. Love your family well while you can.

On the second Saturday in December you can be transported to a traditional Bavarian holiday at the annual Christ Lutheran German Christmas Market 2022. This year marks the 9th year of the market, as the event has become a holiday tradition for our community that highlights the festive Christkindlmarkt events of German tradition.

Christkindlmarkts have been a German tradition since the 1500s. Seasonal markets were held year round, but Christmas markets were much anticipated events, bringing joy, light and laughter into a cold dark season. Each town held their own unique market, highlighting local craftsmen and wares specific to the region. Religious reformer Martin Luther had a deep impact on modern Christmas traditions.

Before Luther influenced Europe, the exchange of gifts took place on the Saint Days of St. Nicholas (December 6) and St. Martin (November 11). Luther suggested that children receive gifts from the Christ Child (Christkindl). The Christkindl delivered gifts to children on Christmas Day (December 25), the modern German equivalent of Santa Claus.

This change in tradition brought about a boon to holiday markets, which brightened the long dark winter season across Germany. Christmas spirit abounds across the region. The crisp, cold air fills with the fragrance of sizzling sausages, sweet pastries, spices and hot spiced gluhwein. Booths sell sweet treats, such as chocolates, cakes, pastries, cookies and candies. Music of Christmas fills the air, in preparation for Christmas.

CHRISTKINDLMARKT 2022

It is easy to feel the Christmas spirit at the annual Christ Lutheran Church event. Browse through over 50 local vendors featuring handmade crafts and goods, publicizing small businesses owned by friends and neighbors from right here in our community (no franchise or commercial goods allowed). Handmade ornaments, quilts, jewelry, pepper jelly, embroidery and hand sewn treasures, crochet, artwork, stepping stones, scarves and more will be on display.

Enjoy home cooked German food including bratwurst, weiner schnitzel, German potato salad, soft pretzels, and international baked goods. Top off an excellent “taste of Deutschland” meal with traditional warm Gluhwein and lebkuchen as if you were on the streets of Frankfurt, Munich, Berlin, Nuremberg, or Stuttgart. Enjoy seeing a vast array of nutcrackers, Hummel and Lladro figurines on display. Live Christmas music featuring a performance by Cumberland Winds at noon will set the tone for this lively day.

Children may participate in craft making in the child focused Advent Workshop while parents show and enjoy the festive atmosphere.

This event draws more than 2500 visitors per year, but crowds aren’t an issue as everyone is enjoying the festive music, food and fun. Admission is free, but be sure you bring money to purchase food, warm Gluhwein and plenty of handmade gifts for everyone on your list. Parking is plentiful with accessible options available. Mark your calendars for Sunday, December 10 from 11AM to 6PM, so you don’t miss out on your chance to be transported to a warm and festive atmosphere of Germany right here in Clarksville!
