Your Health Is Our Priority

Trust the Regional Leaders in Vein + Vascular Care!

SCLEROTHERAPY: A sclerosing solution is injected into the affected veins during the sclerotherapy procedure This solution irritates the vein's inner lining, ultimately causing it to collapse. Over time, the treated vein is absorbed and fades away

EVLT: The Endovenous Laser Treatment uses laser energy to close the offending veins The procedure is completed in 30-45 minutes under mild sedation anesthesia

VARITHENA: This gentle foam treatment is delivered directly into the offending vein to close and relieve the pain due to venous insufficiency or varicose veins

VENASEAL: The VenaSeal Closure System improves blood flow and relieves symptoms by sealing–or closing–the diseased vein. The system delivers a small amount of specially formulated medical adhesive to the diseased vein. The adhesive permanently seals the vein, and blood is rerouted through nearby healthy veins

RADIO FREQUENCY: RF uses heat energy to close an offending vein During the treatment, the heat from the radiofrequency catheter is sent into the vein through a thin, flexible catheter This cauterizes the central vein, closing off the abnormal blood flow.

We are the Region's Only Complex Venous Center - Renewing Legs + Restoring Lives! Our team of Board-Certified, Fellowship-Trained Vascular Surgeons and our VIC Vascular Team delivers comprehensive treatment for ALL your Vascular, Vein + Dialysis Issues We are VIC - Changing the delivery of Vascular Care for our region!

If you are experiencing leg heaviness, aching, itching, pain, or pressure, these are symptoms of venous disease and varicose vein issues. More than 25 million Americans suffer from uncomfortable, unsightly varicose veins You should know about VIC's non-surgical treatment options that are safe, virtually painless, and require little to no downtime. 423.602.2750

Being courageous can mean different things to different people, but one thing is certain – each of us is confronted with situations that require courageous decisions. From relationships in our lives to our careers to how we approach health and wellness, there is something to be said for taking action.

In this late summer issue of HealthScope® magazine, we hope you find articles that inspire you to live life to the fullest and take ownership of your health. First up, our feature “The Basics of Blood Disorders” outlines what you need to know when it comes to conditions such as anemia and hemophilia.

In “Concussions: Fact vs. Fiction” we detail the warning signs of concussions, when to seek help, and how to navigate recovery.

While these features encourage you to listen to your body and seek intervention when necessary, other sections such as “Meet Our Caregivers” aim to highlight another element of overall well-being – passion and purpose. We hope you enjoy reading about the talented professionals in our community and how local caregivers can inspire you when making health and wellness decisions.

Much-loved mainstay sections such as “Her Story” and “Inspired” showcase local women who continue to persevere and offer encouragement to others, and not to

be missed is our “Annual Advancements in Medicine” section which highlights the latest procedures and practices benefiting patients across the Scenic City.

There is much more to discover including guides for stopping negative self-talk and dealing with workplace conflict, plus jewelry selections from local boutiques and tasty, garden-fresh recipes from locals and restaurants alike. Lastly, be sure to check out our interview with cover model Shewanee Howard-Baptiste as she talks about approaching wellness with fun and joy.

We hope you find this late summer issue of HealthScope® magazine to be informative and uplifting and that it will encourage you to embrace life’s challenges while championing your own health.

Blessings Always,

HOTDEALSSUMMER ON WHEELS

QMy father is in his late 60s and has been experiencing aphasia after a stroke. He is currently participating in speech therapy, but... is there anything I can personally do to help with his recovery?

A. Aphasia can be a challenging and frustrating condition associated with difficulty with communication. It can involve both auditory comprehension and verbal expression. The levels of aphasia can differ, so it is important to understand at what level your loved one is understanding you and expressing himself. One of the best ways you can help a loved one dealing with aphasia is to be patient and supportive. It can be very frustrating for both you and your father. Changing your communication strategy can help him comprehend and understand better. This does not necessarily mean speaking louder but may mean giving your father more time to process what has been said. I suggest attending some of the speech therapy sessions with your father to better understand which strategies can help him the most. Your speech therapist may also give homework to further progress his language. Use this homework as an opportunity to engage in conversation more with your father, which will help his confidence while helping him to communicate more efficiently and effectively.

Q. I’ve been considering facial fillers, but I’m a bit nervous. How can I decide if they’re right for me?

A. Absolutely! Feeling nervous about facial fillers is normal. With the proper education from an experienced provider, you will be able to make a decision that is right for you. Around age 30, we start to lose collagen in the face due to normal aging which becomes increasingly noticeable throughout the years. Eating foods rich in amino acids and vitamin C can help increase collagen and hyaluronic acid in the body, however, it is not always absorbed properly and does not always produce the desired effect that we had hoped for. Facial fillers are a great addition as they can restore lost volume and create a smoother appearance. Not only that, many facial fillers contain hyaluronic acid which naturally exists in the skin and can stimulate collagen production. In addition, it also attracts water, which allows the skin to recreate that natural plump and hydrated appearance. Stacey Buckner, MSN, FNP-BC, NP-C

Q. My husband and I always seem to be at odds with each other on family vacations. I like to go with the flow, but he prefers a plan. Any advice?

A. This is actually a fairly common dynamic for couples who travel together. I like to encourage them to sit down and discuss the nonnegotiables they have in mind for their experience on vacation. Do they need three to five hours at the beach and then a more routine schedule for the evening or vice versa?

I am a firm believer that vacation expectations should be discussed beforehand anyway, but even more so when there are two different mindsets about what a fulfilling vacation should include. Certain personality temperaments can make these conversations more difficult, but I encourage people to err on the side of overcommunicating before the trip. Then try to check in while the vacation is happening and ask if things are going how each person would like. Keeping a metaphorical finger on the pulse of the vacation dynamics can be a helpful mindset and will make the vacation more of an enjoyable success.

Q. I am in my early 40s, but I’ve recently been experiencing night sweats and changes in my period. Is it possible that I’m already experiencing menopause, and if so, what can I do about it?

A. The average age of menopause in the United States is 51 and is defined by a woman’s last menstrual period. However, women often begin going through a phenomenon

known as “perimenopause” as early as 5-10 years prior to that. These symptoms are more consistent with peri-menopause and would warrant further evaluation by talking to your provider and obtaining some lab work. Depending on that evaluation and your hormonal status, there are both hormonal and non-hormonal options that we can offer to help manage these bothersome symptoms.

Q. I’ve been dealing with chronic fatigue for a long time now. My bloodwork always comes back normal, but is there anything I can do to feel better?

A. Chronic fatigue can be a result of many factors, but sometimes applying and implementing certain lifestyle changes and available tools can help increase energy levels significantly. Traditional bloodwork does not always account for nutritional deficiencies which plays a huge role in fatigue. We have seen great success by having our patients increase their intake of B-vitamins through nutrition with whole foods as well as supplements. We also use other technologies such as pulsed electromagnetic field therapy and red-light therapy at our clinic which have been proven to help improve chronic fatigue. Pulsed electromagnetic field therapy uses technology to stimulate and exercise cells to help resolve cellular dysfunction, increase bioavailability, and support overall cellular health. Red light therapy targets and stimulates the mitochondria to work more effectively, which results in more energy available to the body. If you are suffering from chronic fatigue, there is hope to get your energy back and live your best, fullest life. Lauran

SOLVING COMPLEX PROBLEMS

1

A typical day for Beth Goodwin, a nurse practitioner with Erlanger Gastroenterology, contains a lot of variety, but that’s part of what she loves most about her job. On an average day, Goodwin will see 10 to 16 patients, both new and established. While some patients may be visiting Goodwin to have a routine colonoscopy screening, others have multiple complex gastrointestinal problems that need to be addressed. Goodwin loves the variation and complexity that comes with her specialty, and that love is apparent to her patients. One of Goodwin’s most proud professional moments was when she had a patient follow her to three different practices because of the care she provided. “I was able to treat this man’s ulcerative colitis in a way where it had been under control for years,” says Goodwin. “It meant a lot that he had such a good experience that he wanted to stick with me.”

2

What’s the key to making a great first impression?

A smile and a good handshake are the key to making a great first impression.

What would you consider to be your main strengths?

Listening to patients. It’s easy for patients to sometimes feel as though they have to explain their symptoms and are rushed through the rest of the visit. I want my patients to always feel like I care about what they have to say.

3

4

What do you love most about your profession?

Helping patients feel better.

What is your philosophy when it comes to the care for your patients?

I always try to meet my patients where they are. I like to find out what they are currently doing and what they are willing to do to improve their health.

5 Do you believe in miracles? Why or why not?

Yes, absolutely. I’ve known patients to far out live prognosis and get to see the birth of a child, a wedding, an anniversary, or another major life event.

20 healthscopemag.com

CARING THROUGH COOKING

1

Growing up as a Brazilian-Italian, Ellen Vitorino was no stranger to the kitchen. With food being such an integral part of both cultures, Vitorino has been cooking for as long as she can remember. Her first job as a cook solidified her love for the art form and introduced her to a more health-focused approach – something that serves her well in her current role as the chef at The Lantern at Morning Pointe of Collegedale. Vitorino went on to gain formal training, and along the way, began to specialize in vegetarian and vegan cooking. “Each one of us has that special dish that instantly transports us to another time and place. Cooking is what makes it possible,” she says. Vitorino is not only able to entertain residents with flavorful food, but she also plays a vital role in making sure they are living their best, healthiest lives and are getting the nutrients they need, which in memory care often means finger foods and specialty diets.

ELLEN VITORINO

THE LANTERN AT MORNING POINTE

ALZHEIMER’S CENTER OF EXCELLENCE, COLLEGEDALE

What do you love most about your profession?

What I love about my job is the combination of creativity and purpose. The possibility of mixing ingredients and creating different dishes every day is combined with helping people be healthier and feel good. It’s the perfect combination!

2

How long have you been in your current role?

I’ve been cooking professionally since 1999 but leading The Lantern kitchen since January of 2023.

3 What is your philosophy when it comes to the care of your patients?

It is to cook with the heart and to bring joy and health to all my residents.

4

What does your day-to-day look like?

Leading a kitchen is a lot of non-routine tasks, and every day is different. Between ordering supplies, organizing schedules, putting menus together, and cooking, there are many things that the job demands, but I like the variety.

5

What influenced you to pursue your career?

I am Brazilian, but my family is Italian. I was raised with both cultures and food is a big part of each of them. My first job as a cook was cooking vegan meals for a healthy lifestyle center. The most important part of that job was the purpose. Part of the treatment was to change patients’ diets to help the body detox and heal. That made all the difference for me.

PROVIDING CLARITY TO PATIENTS

When Benjamin Oliver was in college, one of his professors gave him a challenge – to set out on a career path that would stimulate him as a person and also help others. Years later, Oliver found himself as a physician assistant and has been serving the community for the last five years. Although he’s only been with Erlanger for three months, Oliver has enjoyed his time with the hospital and looks forward to the variety of patients he gets to see every day. “Another one of my favorite aspects of my job is when I’m able to successfully explain a concept to a patient, family member, or student or get them to understand the reason behind our actions,” says Oliver.

What do you love most about your profession?

1I really love the number of people I get to meet and work with on a regular basis. My other favorite part is the investigative aspect of medicine.

2

What is your best advice for patients?

Pay attention to your body. The history you provide is the number one thing that will help us find the cause of your symptoms or issues.

3

What would you consider to be your main strengths?

Being flexible, open-minded, and curious. With the constant updates and changes in medicine, being stagnant can lead to gaps in care or other shortcomings.

4

What is your philosophy when it comes to caring for your patients?

Listen to the patient, try to be clear and concise, and provide a plan that makes sense.

5

Do you believe in miracles?

PUTTING PATIENTS AT EASE

When Lauren Barlew opened Lotus Center for Women in the spring of 2023, she was aiming to fill a gap in women’s healthcare in the Chattanooga area. She has had a passion for women’s sexual wellness since 2011 after learning about the sub-specialty of Women’s Sexual Medicine in graduate school. In general gynecology practice, she was caring for many women who had problems with intimacy. “I recognized that I didn’t have enough time to give my patients the attention that they deserved to manage these complex issues,” says Barlew. “I knew there had to be a better way to care for these patients.” This prompted her to open a new practice where she is now able to dedicate an hour for new patient evaluations, which allows plenty of time to fully understand a patient’s concerns and provide much more effective care. Barlew feels fortunate to have a meaningful impact on her patients’ most personal issues.

1I am so happy when a patient returns for their follow-up appointment and their treatment plan has truly improved their quality of life and their relationship with their partner.

2

What is your best advice for patients?

Don’t be shy! The more my patients tell me about their problems, the better I can help them.

3

What’s the key to making a great first impression?

When a patient calls or enters our doors, we make sure they are greeted with warmth and compassion.

4

What would you consider to be your main strengths?

I am approachable and relatable. I have to earn my patients’ trust in order for them to open up to me about their most intimate concerns, and I take that job seriously!

5 What is your philosophy when it comes to the care of your patients?

I treat every patient as if they are family and work to build long-term relationships with them. This helps me understand where they are coming from and what their goals are. The last thing I want is for my patients to feel like they are just a number.

CREATING A SENSE OF CALM

When Bailey Jones was in high school, she would get to shadow her mother, an EKG tech, during her rounds at Children’s Hospital at Erlanger. “She would have to visit all of the Children’s different departments to perform EKGs, and she would take me with her. That was what sparked my interest in nursing and pediatrics specifically,” says Jones. Years later Jones has returned to Children’s Hospital at Erlanger, this time as a nurse within the outpatient surgery department. Jones plays a key role in the patient experience and helps with everything from greeting children and their families once they get assigned a room to monitoring them post-op to make sure everything goes as planned. “One of my main strengths is getting my patients to trust me and feel comfortable with the care they are receiving,” she says.

What do you love most about your profession?

1Getting to meet and interact with so many different people. Learning a little bit about my patients is always interesting and fun. You never know what a kid will share with you!

2 What is one of your happiest professional moments?

It would have to be when my mom received an email from a friend whose family member I took care of. They expressed their gratitude toward me because of how I helped calm their nerves and listened to their concerns. It made me feel like I really was making a difference.

3 What is your best advice for patients?

Always ask the question. You, as your child’s advocate, deserve to make the best and most educated decision for them as you can, and that starts with being able to have clear conversations about the plan of care.

4 What’s the key to making a great first impression?

No matter how you feel that day, your patient is always having one of the most nerve-wracking days of their life. If I can ease those nerves by coming in calm and smiling, then I know I have already gained some trust.

5 Do you believe in miracles?

I most certainly do. I previously worked in the NICU, and my time there showed me that God can take the tiniest of beings and make them some of His strongest warriors! Those little babies fought battles that only some people could imagine.

CULTIVATING CONNECTIONS

Katie Browne has always been a people person. With seven years of physical therapy under her belt, she has found the career path that is right for her and allows her to connect with patients on both a personal and professional level. Not only does Browne enjoy forming relationships with those she serves; she also views it as one of her main strengths. “I think my strong suit is my communication and people skills,” says Browne. “I have grown to learn that people appreciate honesty and integrity in all interactions.” In addition to forming and strengthening connections on a daily basis, Browne also enjoys helping patients become pain free and regain functional ability that they may have lost during an injury.

What does your day-to-day look like?

1We primarily help people with orthopaedic injuries return to their daily function. We first establish the appropriate plan of action and then continue with exercises that are specific to their injury. We meet with patients several times a week to progress through strengthening, stretching, and any hands-on techniques that will benefit them.

2

What do you love most about your profession?

It’s very rewarding to work with people with physical injuries and help them achieve their goals. I also love that I get to interact with them on a more personal level. I have met wonderful people and made many friendships along the way.

3

What is your best advice for patients?

Communicate as much as you can to your physical therapist. This will help us determine the most effective treatment plan. It’s also important to be compliant with the exercises prescribed in order to return to full function as quickly as possible.

4

5

What’s the key to making a great first impression?

Be personable, be professional, and be a good listener.

What is your philosophy when it comes to the care for your patients?

To instill in patients the need to help themselves. The more they are educated on their physical health, the better outcomes they will have, and their quality of life will improve.

THE BASICS OF BLOOD DISORDERS

FACT VS. FICTION
CONCUSSIONS:

The Basics of Blood Disorders

There are many different types of blood disorders which can cause a variety of symptoms, but many of us don’t consider our blood when we start to feel poorly. Here, we share important information about several of the most common blood disorders to look out for. Read on for helpful tips for living with these disorders from local experts.

34 healthscopemag.com

Anemia Sickle Cell Disease

Anemia is a condition characterized by abnormally low levels of healthy red blood cells. Symptoms include exhaustion, weakness, shortness of breath, dizziness, headaches, or an irregular heartbeat. Common types of anemia include:

Iron-deficiency anemia:

The most common cause of anemia is low levels of iron, which is necessary for red blood cell production. People with iron-deficiency anemia may have cold hands and feet or pale skin in addition to the typical symptoms listed above.

Vitamin B12-deficiency anemia:

Low levels of B12 can also impair red blood cell production. Untreated B12 deficiency can cause neurological symptoms like trouble walking, uncontrollable muscle movements, mood changes, confusion, and more.

Hemolytic anemia:

Hemolysis is the body’s normal process of discarding old or unhealthy red blood cells. Hemolytic anemia occurs when this process is impaired, causing the body to destroy healthy cells faster than they can be created.

Common treatments for anemia include medications and dietary supplements. Dr. J. Eric Turner of Peeples Cancer Institute advises, “Taking a daily multivitamin supplement and choosing a healthy diet can help support red blood cell development and limit the effects of anemia.”

Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a cluster of inherited disorders relating to abnormalities in hemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen. With SCD, abnormal hemoglobin causes the red blood cells to become sticky, rigid, and C-shaped. This causes the cells to get stuck in blood vessels and impairs blood flow, leading to significant symptoms such as pain, infection, acute chest syndrome, and stroke. SCD can also cause a form of hemolytic anemia known as sickle cell anemia.

“Bone marrow transplants and gene therapy are emerging as very promising ways to remove many of the lifelong complications from sickle cell disease,” says Dr. Avery Mixon, director of pediatric hematology/oncology at Erlanger. “For patients who aren’t ready or eligible to pursue those options, there are several new drugs on the market that can help decrease symptoms and complications, and some patients rely on chronic transfusional support.”

Additionally, certain lifestyle changes can be helpful. “The key is to prevent sickle pain crises,” Dr. Turner explains. “Sickle cell patients need to stay hydrated, so drinking plenty of water each day is helpful. They should also avoid tobacco use and try to exercise at a moderate level regularly.”

Hemophilia

Hemophilia is a genetic disorder in which the blood does not clot properly. “Hemophilia can lead to internal bleeding, nosebleeds, and bleeding within the joints that can damage the joint space over time,” says Dr. Turner. There is no cure, but highly effective treatments are available and typically involve infusing the blood with the necessary clotting factor. This can be done after injury to stop bleeding or on a regular basis to prevent bleeding episodes.

The CDC reports that hemophilia occurs in far more male births than female. This is because male sex is determined by XY chromosomes as opposed to XX for female. A female baby would need to inherit the gene that causes hemophilia on both X-chromosomes to develop the disorder, while males will be hemophilic if the gene is present in just one. Because of this, Dr. Mixon advises, “Male children from carrier mothers should be tested shortly after birth to see if they have inherited this.”

Though hemophilia has a strong genetic component, Dr. Turner says, “Some people develop hemophilia without a family history, which is called acquired hemophilia. Acquired hemophilia can be associated with pregnancy, some cancers, autoimmune conditions, certain drugs, and multiple sclerosis.”

Venous Thromboembolism

“Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a significant vascular disease that can cause dangerous complications, including deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism, which may lead to long-term disability or even death,” says Dr. Chris LeSar of Vascular Institute of Chattanooga. DVT is a blood clot that forms in the vein, which can impede blood flow or break off and travel to the lungs as a pulmonary embolism, blocking blood flow.

“If you have experienced VTE, the risks of developing recurring clots or further complications may be higher than those who have not experienced this condition. Fortunately, there are measures you can take to help prevent another episode of VTE or limit the risk of complications,” says Dr. LeSar. “Maintaining a healthy lifestyle, regularly exercising, and avoiding smoking are all steps that can significantly reduce the likelihood of developing new blood clots. Additionally, if your doctor prescribes bloodthinning medication, taking it as directed can help reduce the risk of further VTE occurrences. By working with your healthcare provider and following their recommendations, you can take steps to manage your VTE and prevent long-term complications.”

Though disorders of the blood can cause a wide range of symptoms, it can be easy to overlook the possibility that you may have a blood-related condition. If you are experiencing symptoms like unexplained exhaustion or tingling sensations –and certainly if you are experiencing any of the severe symptoms discussed earlier – it is important to check with a doctor for proper testing or treatment.

“Blood, as everyone is aware, is vital to life. Blood that isn’t being made properly in your bone marrow, blood that is diseased, and losing blood all can have anywhere from mild symptoms to life-threatening consequences,” says Dr. Mixon. “As it is vital to your well-being, don’t ignore your symptoms. Have a discussion with your primary care physician to see if any lab work is indicated or if a referral to a hematologist is needed.”

Concussions Fact vs. Fiction

40 healthscopemag.com

A concussion is a common type of traumatic brain injury that can be more significant than some people realize. Here, we separate the facts of concussions from the fiction with insight from Dr. Jason Robertson, a sports medicine specialist with Center for Sports Medicine and Orthopaedics, and Dr. Matt Campbell, a pediatrician with CHI Memorial Pediatric Diagnostic Associates.

healthscopemag.com 41
Robertson, Matt Campbell, MD, FAAP Pediatrician, CHI Memorial Pediatric Diagnostic Associates

Fiction: Concussions are just minor injuries that are no big deal.

Fact: Concussions are a relatively common injury, but they should not be taken lightly. “Concussions are no longer described or graded as mild because the diagnosis should not be minimized – it can be very serious,” says Dr. Robertson. “There is much we are still learning about the long-term effects of concussions on the developing brain. The most concerning complication is second impact syndrome, which can occur if a second concussion occurs before one is fully recovered – leading to rapid brain swelling and often death.”

Fiction: If you don’t feel immediate symptoms of a concussion, you’re in the clear.

Fact: Some symptoms of concussion tend to show up quickly, but each concussion can be different. “Immediate symptoms you may notice are headache, nausea or vomiting, balance problems, dizziness, light sensitivity, fatigue, slowed reaction time, and confusion,” Dr. Campbell explains. “Symptoms that may develop later are persistent cognitive difficulties (brain fog), emotional instability (like irritability, anxiety, and depression) and memory loss.”

With any potential concussion, it is always important to pay close attention to symptoms. If new symptoms arise or existing symptoms worsen, a trip to the emergency room should not be delayed. “When in doubt if there is a concussion, be safe rather than sorry,” Dr. Campbell advises.

Fiction: After a concussion, people need to be woken up every few hours.

Fact: People with mild symptoms of concussion can often safely recover at home, but this longstanding myth can actually do more harm than good. “People with concussions do not need to be woken up periodically, rather they need ample sleep to allow the brain to heal,” Dr. Campbell clarifies. “Mild symptoms can be treated at home with brain rest. This involves plenty of sleep and limiting activities that make symptoms worse (i.e. screen time, loud music, exercise).”

“Not rushing back to full activity is extremely important for faster recovery,” Dr. Campbell adds. “Taking it slow also helps prevent post-concussion syndrome, where symptoms can last for months to years if you get a second concussion before the first one is resolved.”

Fact: “The most common cause of a sports-related concussion (SRC) is a direct blow to the head. American football is the most at risk sport for athletes to sustain a concussion. SRCs may also occur from an indirect, impulsive force that is transmitted to the head and may not involve a direct blow to the head at all,” Dr. Robertson explains.

Concussions that are not related to sports often result from incidents like falls and car accidents. Even if the head is not directly hit, any sort of jolting motion can cause the brain to move in the skull and cause damage.

Fact: While it is true that most helmets would be better than being entirely unprotected, helmets are created with specific activities in mind to provide the best protection possible. Specific materials and designs are better for certain activities, but may not provide adequate protection in others. Additionally, one size does not fit all – helmets should be chosen on an individual basis for personal use. Even if you use a helmet that is designed for a specific activity, it may not provide protection if it doesn’t fit properly. Helmets should always be properly fitted to the head, well maintained, and appropriately certified for use. If the helmet begins to show signs of wear and tear, it should be replaced. The CDC has published a number of detailed, activityspecific guides to proper helmet safety. You can find them at: cdc.gov/headsup/helmets/

Fact: Athletes should only return to their sport after getting clearance from a physician. Typically, they will follow a six-step return to play progression:

1. Return to light activities, like school or short walks.

2. Light aerobic exercise only to increase the heart rate for short periods (5-10 minutes).

3. Moderate activity that involves body and head movement, such as jogging.

4. Heavy, non-contact activity according to their normal routine, like weightlifting.

5. Return to full contact in a controlled practice setting.

6. Return to competition.

“Symptoms from an SRC typically resolve within 7-10 days. Athletes are often able to return to their sport within that time frame, but everyone is different,” Dr. Robertson says. “There is arguably no more important organ in the body than the brain, especially in our developing children. Although sports are extremely important to the mental and physical growth of our kids, nothing is more important than their long-term health. If there is suspicion of a concussion, protect the child. When in doubt, sit them out.”

44 healthscopemag.com
Fiction: Blows to the head are the only way to get a concussion.
Fiction: Individuals can go back to sports and other activities as soon as they feel better.
Fiction: A helmet is a helmet – if it covers your head, it can protect you well enough.

An Expert Weighs In

“As a practicing vascular surgeon for over 20 years, the endovascular technologies, such as atherectomy, have revolutionized not only how we help patients, but where. We can now operate on the inside of arteries, removing plaque or blockages, or strengthening the artery with a metal stent. This can be done through a small plastic sheath instead of an open incision. So same day procedures in an outpatient center can be performed. This knowledge has made it easier and better for patient care.”

Advancements in CLI Prevention

Thanks to advanced arterial procedures, the risk of developing critical limb ischemia can be reduced.

Understanding Critical Limb Ischemia

Critical limb ischemia (CLI) is the advanced form of peripheral arterial disease (PAD), which occurs when plaque builds up in the blood vessels and arteries and reduces blood flow. This blockage limits the necessary transfer of oxygen and nutrients needed to keep tissues alive, and if left untreated, can lead to limb loss. Symptoms of PAD include pain or numbness in the legs, open sores, and weakness with walking.

New Solutions

Advancements in arterial procedures and intravenous technology are making strides in the treatment of PAD and prevention of CLI. One of these procedures is an atherectomy, where a catheter is inserted into the artery to remove plaque from its walls and clear a path for blood flow. Healthcare providers in the United States perform this common procedure around 190,000 times annually.

What to Expect

During an atherectomy you will receive local anesthesia before your vascular provider inserts a special catheter into the affected artery. Once positioned at the blockage, the catheter will then remove the plaque buildup using a blade or laser. This minimally invasive procedure can be performed in an outpatient setting.

Benefits to Patients

Procedures such as an atherectomy have been instrumental in reducing patients’ risk of CLI and limb loss. Your vascular professional can advise you on the best treatment plan for PAD and help you achieve a better quality of life.

An Expert Weighs In

“With the use of CAD/CAM in dentistry, crowns can be made on the same day. This eliminates the need to wait for crown fabrication for two to three weeks while a temporary crown is worn. Although the cost of a lab-fabricated vs. same-day crown is about the same, patients save money by cutting out the extra visit, meaning less time off work and less travel time to the office. One question we are often asked is about the strength. Recent studies have shown that CAD/CAM tooth restorations are just as successful as crowns made with traditional materials and techniques.”

Advancements in Dental Crowns

Thanks to new scanning technology, dental crowns can be designed and fitted in a same-day procedure.

Understanding Dental Crowns

Dental crowns are synthetic caps that provide shape and function for restoration. These protective coverings can prevent tooth breakage, restore teeth that are already broken, and hold dental bridges in place. Crowns can also support a tooth that’s had a root canal and can cover a dental implant. Without crowns, damaged teeth are more prone to toothaches, sensitivity, and pain when biting or chewing.

New Solutions

Installing a dental crown used to require two visits – the first to create an impression of the filed tooth and the second to cement the crown. But now, same-day procedures are possible. Using computer-aided design and manufacturing (CAD/CAM) technology, dentists can take digital photos of the mouth and create a custom crown during one visit. The entire process takes about two to four hours.

What to Expect

The CAD/CAM same-day crown process involves five steps:

Tooth Preparation: Before attaching the new crown, your dentist will prepare the site for restoration by removing decay.

Intraoral Scanning: Next, an optical scanner is used to create a 3D custom image of your mouth.

Restoration Design: Once the image is obtained, your dentist will use the CAD software to identify the proper design for your prosthesis.

Production: The software will then connect with an on-site milling machine that shapes the crown from a block of ceramic. It is then stained or glazed to match your natural tooth color.

Cementation: Your new crown will be ready for application immediately. Your dentist will cement it to the tooth, polish it, and remove any excess debris.

Benefits to Patients

Dentist

Soddy Daisy Smiles

Studies show that this procedure is just as successful as traditional techniques and can even assist in preserving more of the existing tooth. CAD/CAM crown installation is quick and efficient, eliminating the temporary crown and second visit required by past methods. Because the process is completed same-day and chairside, the patient can see what their new crown will look like and how it will fit, leaving them confident and comfortable with their restoration.

An Expert Weighs In

“While laparoscopic or robotic hysterectomies are the most common procedure I perform for fibroids, they don’t necessarily fit into every woman’s life. I’m so excited to bring this treatment option to the women of Chattanooga and surrounding areas!”

Advancements in Uterine Fibroid Treatment

Laparoscopic radiofrequency ablation is a new, minimally invasive option to target uterine fibroids.

Understanding Uterine Fibroids

Uterine fibroids are common, noncancerous growths in the muscle tissue of the uterus, affecting up to 80% of U.S. women at some point in their lives. Most women do not experience any issues associated with uterine fibroids, but those who do may suffer from heavy bleeding, painful periods, and abdominal pain. When these symptoms affect a woman’s quality of life, surgery may be recommended to intervene.

New Solutions

Previously, the most common treatment for symptomatic uterine fibroids was a hysterectomy, a major surgery where the entire uterus is removed. Minimally invasive, uterus-sparing surgeries have since emerged to treat fibroids, including laparoscopic radiofrequency ablation. The first of its kind to treat uterine fibroids, this procedure utilizes laparoscopic ultrasound imaging to accurately locate fibroids and controlled heat from radiofrequency waves to shrink the tissue.

What to Expect

First, you will receive anesthesia to ensure a painless experience. Then, your surgeon will make three small incisions in the abdomen for a camera, ultrasound wand, and surgery handpiece. They will use the imaging technologies to locate the fibroids and then apply controlled heat to the fibroid tissue via the surgical handpiece. Once surgery is complete, you will likely be cleared to go home that same day.

Benefits to Patients

Laparoscopic radiofrequency ablation has a quick recovery time, with patients returning to work in around five days. Its state-of-the-art imaging technique can locate up to two times more fibroids than conventional methods, allowing physicians to treat fibroids that may otherwise remain undetected and keeping reintervention rates low. This procedure leaves the uterus intact while effectively decreasing symptoms, giving women another option as they consider the best fibroid treatment for their current lifestyle.

An Expert Weighs In

“The ability to walk is a primary goal for patients after a stroke. The last 10 years of stroke rehabilitation research have shown that the best walking outcomes occur when patients maximize the number of steps they take while their heart rate is elevated into high heart rate zones. Siskin Hospital is equipped to offer this treatment intervention in a safe and effective way to help our patients reach their walking goals.”

Advancements in Stroke Rehabilitation

High intensity gait training can help improve walking-related outcomes for patients who have experienced a stroke.

Understanding Stroke Rehabilitation

After a stroke, which occurs when the blood supply to the brain is interrupted, the brain needs to re-wire itself. Known as neuroplasticity, this ability of the brain allows its unaffected areas to take on new functions. Stroke rehabilitation techniques can help the brain make these neuroplastic changes through repetitive practice under the proper intensity.

New Solutions

Research on neuroplasticity related to stroke rehabilitation has informed innovative methods to help patients improve their walking ability, such as high intensity gait training (HIGT). This rehabilitation technique is based on the discovery that neuroplastic changes best occur when a patient exercises at high intensity levels while maintaining 75-85% of their maximum heart rate.

What to Expect

HIGT sessions simply consist of walking. To help keep your heart rate in the target zone, your physical therapist may introduce challenges such as adding weight to your legs and increasing your walking speed, as well as have you ascend and descend stairs, change directions, and navigate obstacles.

Benefits to Patients

For people who have experienced a stroke, HIGT can help improve walking speed, quality, symmetry, and balance. Compared to conventional methods, it involves a higher number of steps within the range required for neuroplasticity and facilitates a significant increase in steps per day. HIGT can also advance cardiovascular fitness and endurance and decrease the risk of having another stroke.

Understanding Thread Lifts

A thread lift is a non-surgical cosmetic treatment where extremely thin, medicalgrade threads are inserted under the skin. These threads help lift sagging skin, define features, reduce wrinkles and lines, and provide a naturally youthful look. Thread lifts are best for patients looking to correct lines, wrinkles, and sagging skin, and often target skin under the chin and near the cheeks.

New Solutions

Polydioxanone (PDO) threads are a popular option among thread lifts. Made from a biodegradable, colorless polyester, PDO threads are well suited to give skin a rejuvenated appearance. Once inserted, PDO threads also promote the production of collagen, the protein that gives skin structure and elasticity. The threads start to dissolve at four months, with effects lasting up to two years as a result of the increased collagen levels.

Advancements in Skin Rejuvenation

Thread lifts are an innovative, minimally invasive option for individuals looking to refresh tired skin.

An Expert Weighs In

What to Expect

During this minimally invasive procedure, you will receive a local anesthetic to numb the area. Your physician will then insert a small device called a cannula into the skin, which they will use to anchor the PDO thread in place. Once the cannula is removed, your surgeon will then cut the thread and ensure it is secure. You will be free to leave after the procedure is complete and return to your regular schedule within a day.

Benefits to Patients

PDO threads can provide many of the same benefits as more invasive cosmetic treatments. Compared to a procedure such as facelift surgery, PDO threading is a cost-effective alternative that avoids large incisions. Plus, with a minimal recovery time, you can achieve a refreshed look without sacrificing your schedule.

“PDO threads are a true passion of mine and are creating a pathway into a safer future in medical aesthetics. PDO threads in my practice are used to perform nonsurgical facial lifting and jawline contouring, eyebrow lifts, neck lift and tightening, tear trough treatment, breast lift, nasolabial fold correction, lip contouring, marionette treatment, decollette treatment, and many more. Because PDO threads are a safe, biodegradable material that creates collagen stimulation, I use them frequently in practice for forehead lines, crows feet, and other fine lines when Botox, Dysport, or Jeuveau are contraindicated medically. This makes PDO threads an overall benefit.

Advancements in Orthopedic Surgery

State-of-the-art ambulatory centers are helping make orthopedic procedures convenient and accessible.

Understanding Orthopedic Surgery

Orthopedic surgery covers a wide scope of procedures related to bones, joints, and muscles. Thanks to advancements in surgical technology, medicine, and procedures, many orthopedic surgeries that used to require hospital stays can now be performed in an outpatient setting instead. In fact, research suggests that more than half of the total joint replacement surgeries will be in the outpatient setting by 2026, along with many other procedures, including spine care.

New Solutions

Orthopedic surgeries that can be performed in an outpatient setting include total joint replacement and cervical disc arthroplasty along with arthroscopy and minimally invasive procedures. Outpatient surgery is appropriate for many simple procedures that can be completed in 60 to 90 minutes and do not require close monitoring afterward.

What to Expect

Because ambulatory surgery centers are exclusively for outpatient procedures, you will be accommodated with little delay. After surgery is complete, you will receive aftercare instructions, and be free to return home and begin the healing process.

Benefits to Patients

Ambulatory centers have enhanced the patient experience, from sparing costs associated with overnight stays to allowing recovery in the comfort of one’s own home. The outpatient setting can also reduce the risk of infection and cuts down on delays and waiting times. By requiring far less of a patient’s time, same-day procedures help patients return to their daily schedule sooner. Consult with your physician to determine if an outpatient setting is the right approach for your orthopedic surgery.

An Expert Weighs In

“With the latest technology – and a focus on quality and safety – Center for Sports Medicine & Orthopaedics is leading the way with new models of care and a comprehensive approach to outpatient surgical orthopedics. Our highly trained physicians and surgery center staff are dedicated to ensuring a safe experience with the best outcome possible. Patients benefit from this same-day surgery alternative by avoiding hospital stays and returning home for recovery more quickly. In the outpatient setting, we can better control costs and pass those savings on to our patients. Our priority is to offer exceptional outpatient surgical care for every orthopedic need.”

Understanding Mammography

Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers in women, accounting for 30% of all new female cancers each year in the United States. However, when caught early, it is also one of the most treatable, thanks to mammography. This diagnostic technique uses x-rays to produce images of the breast, and recent advancements have made screening more accurate than ever.

New Solutions

Mammography technology has advanced significantly since it became common practice in the mid-20th century. Today, tomosynthesis mammography offers digital x-rays that create threedimensional pictures of the breasts. These detailed images have improved the detection abilities of mammography, leading to faster and more accurate diagnoses.

Advancements in Mammography

Routine screening mammograms can help women catch signs of early breast cancer and begin treatment as soon as possible.

What to Expect

During a mammogram, a specially designed x-ray machine will apply gentle compression to the breast to obtain a clear picture of the breast tissue. Images of both breasts will be captured from two angles, top to bottom and side to side. Afterwards, your radiologist, a doctor trained to read mammograms, will evaluate the images for signs of cancer or other problems.

Benefits to Patients

Mammograms are crucial to catching early breast cancer. The American College of Radiology, Society of Breast Surgeons, National Comprehensive Cancer Network, and U.S. Preventative Services Task Force recommend all women to start receiving preventative screening mammograms beginning at age 40 to ensure early signs of cancer are caught as soon as possible so treatment can begin.

An Expert Weighs In

“Since the early 1990s mammography has decreased mortality related to breast cancer by nearly 40%. Studies have and continue to show that screening mammography saves lives. One in eight women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer and one in six breast cancers occur in the women in their 40s. Now with the widespread use of tomosynthesis, or 3D mammograms, smaller and more subtle cancers are being found, often when the disease is at a much earlier stage. Finding breast cancer early, the goal of mammography, significantly increases the chance for long-term survival. This is why we strongly recommend yearly screening mammography beginning at age 40.

Advancements in Wisdom Teeth Removal

Understanding Wisdom Teeth

Third molars, also known as wisdom teeth, are known to cause a plethora of issues including pain, cavities, bone loss, cysts, tumors, and infections. The risks of wisdom teeth removal increase after the age of 35, so removal at a young age (15-25 yrs.) vastly reduces the risks of complications.

New Solutions

Advancements in technology, medications, and techniques have improved the experience of wisdom teeth removal.

Imaging technology allows for better planning of the removal procedure with Cone Beam CTs that provide increased accuracy when locating nerves, vessels, and critical anatomic areas to aid in protecting the patient and preventing complications.

Anesthesia can ease patient anxieties and reduce or prevent pain during surgery. Options include local anesthesia (removes all sensation of sharp pain), nitrous oxide (alters the perception of pain), conscious/moderate oral or IV sedation (alters awareness and recall of the procedure) and deep sedation/general anesthesia (removes all potential awareness of the procedure). New advancements in monitoring, rescue equipment, assistant training, and medications have aided in improving safety and predictability of these procedures.

Pain reduction solutions assist the healing process. An innovative use of platelets has been introduced to aid in faster healing. This second-generation platelet concentration can be done right in the surgery office. Your blood will be drawn and placed into a centrifuge to concentrate the platelets into a fibrin matrix, allowing for a slow release of important factors that augment healing. Placing these platelet concentrates into the surgical sites can significantly reduce postoperative pain, swelling, and incidence of dry socket.

While narcotics can be useful for acute episodes of severe pain, new options are available to reduce their potential necessity. One example is the long-acting non-opioid pain reliever, Exparel, which can eliminate any sharp pain from the surgical site for up to 72 hours. Its mechanism is similar to injections used for any dental procedure; however, the slow, moderated release increases its longevity and eliminates postoperative pain in most patients.

Benefits to Patients

For some people, wisdom teeth removal is an intimidating process and may cause anxiety in the days leading up to it. Knowing that medical advancements in imaging, anesthesia, and pain reduction options are available to prevent complications and ease discomfort can be a great relief to these fears.

Body contouring defines a number of surgical and nonsurgical procedures that help patients restore confidence in their body’s appearance and function.

New Solutions

Emsculpt Neo is an innovative body contouring treatment that uses high-intensity focused electromagnetic technology (HIFEM) and radio frequency (RF) energy. HIFEM technology prompts the targeted muscle to contract at intensities not achievable during a voluntary workout; this stress promotes the growth of muscle fibers. Simultaneously, RF heating causes fat cells to be damaged and naturally expelled from the body. On average, Emsculpt Neo can increase muscle volume by 25% and reduce fat content by 30%.

What to Expect

the technology works. You will lie down comfortably as applicators are applied and begin to treat the target area – you may experience a heating sensation comparable to a hot stone massage. Each treatment lasts 30 minutes, with six sessions recommended for the best results.

Benefits to Patients

Emsculpt Neo treatments are painless and noninvasive, making patient comfort a priority. This treatment can target biceps, abdominals, glutes, thighs, calves, and more, making it an option for a wide variety of patient goals. By delivering both muscle toning and fat reduction therapies in one treatment, Emsculpt Neo maximizes efficiency. Its short, 30-minute sessions make achieving results convenient for even those with the busiest of schedules, and following treatment, patients can immediately return to daily activities with no recovery or downtime needed.

Her Story

68 healthscopemag.com
Lauren Guin on Shifting Perspectives

My 20s were filled with amazing accomplishments and wonderful memories accompanied by complete heartbreak and an abundant amount of grief. I thought surely, after watching my favorite person on earth succumb to a four-year battle with cancer and then going through a divorce at 26 while living hours away from my family, I had endured enough hardship for a while. My Mawmaw was not only my closest friend but my hero. It was astonishing to watch her go through all the pain and suffering of chemo treatments to finally be told, “There’s nothing we can do.”

I went on to get married, but the honeymoon phase faded fast. I found myself alone quite often and was eventually served divorce papers. My ex-husband told me that he just couldn’t envision himself throwing a ball in the front yard with kids. What a painful way to end a marriage.

I was ready for some good news, or at least no news at all. So when I met my now husband, all I could see were good times ahead. On our second date, he casually talked about wanting to be a dad and how he had always seen himself throwing a ball in the front yard with kids. It really put things into perspective for me, and I had never been happier. God knew exactly what he was doing, and it wasn’t long before we were married.

Fast forward several months, and I was pregnant with our baby boy. We were over the moon to find out about our blessing.

What I thought had been a typical pregnancy quickly changed when I was about eight months pregnant. I had been told numerous times that I had a perfect, healthy baby. But all of a sudden, we were at the high-risk doctor staring at the ultrasound and were told “Your son has spina bifida. He’s not going to walk. He will need a wheelchair. He’s not going to have any bowel or bladder function.”

It became all about perspective once again. I could either label myself as the poor special needs mom, or I could change my perspective with “I get to do this” rather than “I’ve got to do this.”

healthscopemag.com 69
Photography by Rich Smith
But to see her stay positive and still give glory to God forever changed my perspective.

When my brother found out our son was going to need surgery right out of the womb and would possibly never walk, he was so angry. I remember him saying, “You’ve already been through so much. Why would this happen to you?”

My amazing husband had the best response“Why not us?” If anyone could handle special needs parenting, it was us. I am an occupational therapist and my husband is a first responder, so we knew our son Eli would have a great combination to help him every step of the way.

Unfortunately, I was still subjected to questions like “Did you take your prenatal vitamins?” and I’ve gotten my share of comments from people apologizing because I ‘drew the unlucky straw.’ I always take the opportunity to tell them in fact, it is quite the opposite. My child is perfect, and I’m blessed to be his mom. I did mourn the child I thought I would have and had to forgive myself for feeling responsible, like somehow it was my fault that this happened. But I remembered how important perspective is.

70 healthscopemag.com HER STORY

So, when I went to my husband to propose the calling I felt for us to become foster parents, he thoughtfully asked, “Why us?” (along with a lot of what-ifs.) I remembered his answer to my brother and said, “Why not us?” We are already special needs parents, and these kids have their own needs that we could help meet. Our foster care journey began, and now 10 kids have come and gone in our home. It has not been easy. We have endured so much heartbreak and the system is broken, but every child has been a blessing. To know just a small glimpse of what these kids have been through in their short time on earth really changes your outlook.

It’s been said before, “For every challenge, there is an opportunity to learn and grow.” Eli is now three years old and is the most loving, entertaining, and determined child. Watching a toddler navigate life while also being paraplegic is so humbling. I am also expecting a baby girl in July and couldn’t be happier to watch our family grow. I know more challenges will come, but my positive perspective will remain the same.

Diffusing Workplace Drama

Disagreements in our lives are inevitable, but they can be especially uncomfortable at work. It’s crucial to resolve an issue with a coworker or a difficult situation with a supervisor quickly before it can cause more problems. We asked Jan Goldsmith, co-founder and CEO of The Knowledge Firm, a conflict resolution and mediation company, to dive into the details of good communication and unraveling conflicts.

72 healthscopemag.com
CAREER & FINANCE

While friction between coworkers can be uncomfortable, it’s important to note that there is a difference between good conflict and bad conflict. Healthy conflict occurs when people have differences in opinions or work styles that are approached calmly and constructively. Working through them can promote compassion and understanding and even lead to “growth and innovation within individuals and teams,” Goldsmith says. Bad conflict, on the other hand, is destructive and detrimental to the people involved. Goldsmith describes these kinds of disputes as those “based on personal attacks, deep-rooted animosity, or a lack of willingness to find common ground.”

Though it may be tempting, it’s never a good idea to ignore a conflict or push it off until later. Unresolved issues can create an atmosphere of negativity and distrust and be a barrier to communication between team members. It can even spread to multiple departments and “lead to reduced job satisfaction and increased turnover,” she explains.

When you’re working through a problem, the goal should be to come to a constructive solution rather than play the blame game and hash out past events. “Encourage a problem-solving mindset among all involved and strive for mutually beneficial outcomes that address the root causes of the problem,” Goldsmith suggests.

Two other key factors in navigating these difficult workplace situations are emotional and social intelligence. Emotional intelligence, as Goldsmith explains, is awareness and effective management of your own emotions as well as the ability to empathize with the emotions of others. “Social intelligence is the capacity to understand others, what motivates them, and how they work, as well as the ability to work cooperatively with others,” she says.

Clear, open communication paired with active listening and social and emotional intelligence will help successfully clear up these sticky workplace situations. “Remember, conflict is a natural part of human interaction; resolving it can lead to stronger relationships and a healthier work environment,” Goldsmith shares.

The Knowledge Firm’s Top Conflict Resolution Tips

1. Encourage open communication, compromise, and collaboration: Create a safe space for both parties to express their concerns and perspectives. Encourage active listening and ensure everyone can share their side of the issue.

2. Identify the underlying causes: Try to understand the root causes of the conflict. Conflicts arise from miscommunication, differences in work styles, or conflicting goals. Identifying these underlying factors can help in finding appropriate solutions.

3. Remain neutral and objective:

It’s crucial for managers to remain neutral and avoid taking sides. Approach a conflict with an aim mindset and focus on finding a fair resolution.

4. Foster a culture of empathy and understanding: Encourage empathy among all involved and the understanding of each other’s viewpoints, including the impact of their actions. Promote a sense of shared goals and teamwork.

5. Document the agreement: Once reached, document the details and ensure both parties know the expectations and responsibilities moving forward. This provides a reference point if conflict(s) re-emerge.

6. Lead by example: Demonstrate positive conflict resolution behaviors as a leader. Model effective communication, empathy, and problem-solving skills to inspire others to do the same.

Stomping Out Negative Self Talk

Our inner voices follow us everywhere we go. The one voice we are guaranteed to hear our whole lives is our own, so the way we talk to ourselves matters. When that voice starts to feel more foe than friend, it can be distressing and difficult to escape. Studies report that 80% of the approximately 6,000 thoughts we have each day are negative. When negative selftalk takes over this much of our time, it’s more important than ever to learn how negative selftalk sounds and how we can stomp it out.

While it is true everyone experiences negative self-talk from time to time, not everyone experiences it in the same way. It manifests differently from person to person, and this can make it especially tricky to recognize and combat. These different manifestations of negative self-talk are called cognitive distortions. Harvard Health Publishing explains that “cognitive distortions are internal mental filters or biases that increase our misery, fuel our anxiety, and make us feel bad about ourselves.”

Some common cognitive distortions include:

• Catastrophizing: believing a worst-case-scenario to be fated

• Filtering: seeing only the bad in a situation and ignoring the good

• Black-and-white thinking: thinking in extremes, unable to see any gray area

• Labeling: limiting yourself with restrictive labels

• Should-ing and must-ing: feeling an unhealthy pressure to act a certain way

After recognizing a cognitive distortion, it might seem like a daunting process to replace the negative thoughts with positive ones. Some negative thoughts seem to spiral out of control. Positive thinking doesn’t come naturally for everyone, as it is a habit that takes time to nurture and develop. Fortunately, there are many easy techniques and practices that can help curb negative self-talk, allowing for new, positive thinking patterns to take root.

74 healthscopemag.com MENTAL HEALTH

Get Curious

When negative self-talk takes over, you might be falsely led to believe your unpleasant thoughts and feelings are factually based. A great way to challenge rigid, emotional reasoning is to get curious and investigate alternative perspectives. For example, if you find yourself stuck in a pattern of black-and-white thinking, you may begin to find clarity by intentionally exploring the “gray area” in your situation.

Feel Your Feelings

If you are experiencing negative self-talk, it’s most likely impacting your emotions. Some people tend to push their emotions down as a coping mechanism. Other people feed their emotions until they feel wild and out of control. However, the best way to cope with negative feelings is to feel them — judgment free. Set aside time to observe the sensations that your emotions create in your body without trying to control or change them.

Say Affirmations

Self-affirmations work by reinforcing your core values and sense of self. Try choosing a few affirmations that resonate with your personal beliefs and identity, and repeat them to yourself whenever you get stuck in a loop of negative thoughts.

Practice Mindfulness

Mindfulness is all about refocusing on the present moment. When negative self-talk begins to distract you, draw your attention to your physical surroundings and focus on your five senses. What can you see? What do you hear? Notice the way you are holding your body. Take a few deep breaths. If you want to boost your mindfulness practice, try incorporating 10 to 15 minutes of meditation to your daily routine.

Find Support

You don’t have to face negative self-talk alone. Professional coaches and therapists are trained to help people let go of negative thought patterns and experience healthy, positive self-talk. Online support groups and group therapy are also great resources that can provide a sense of community and confidence.

Shewanee Howard-Baptiste

For Shewanee Howard-Baptiste, health and wellness have long been a part of her journey on earth. With degrees in exercise science and coaching, Howard-Baptiste is no stranger to the power of movement, but integrating that movement with other parts of one’s life is the true key. Today, Howard-Baptiste uses exercise as a primary way to connect with her friends and husband, and when combined with prayer, meditation, and plenty of laughter, it leaves her feeling full of life.

What is your approach to wellness?

My approach to wellness typically centers around making connections with others while moving. I don’t believe exercise, fitness, and wellness should be topics that we dread talking about. Movement and physical activity can be a lot of fun and can connect people with family and friends.

What are your favorite ways to practice self-care?

I always try to stay hydrated, make sleep a priority, and get monthly massages. I give myself at least one hour a day to engage in fitness opportunities that give me joy and provide me with energy, and I’m always looking for opportunities for walk and talks. I can catch up with friends while increasing my cardiovascular endurance!

What are some of your current goals, and what are you doing to work toward them?

1. Run a half marathon with my friend, Shana Oates. She has been training; I have not ... as of yet. We are looking at races for next year, so we can start training together. We have both

completed half-marathons in the past, so this will be great accountability for me. 2. Engage in more outdoor activities like hiking and paddle boarding. These are great opportunities for date nights with my husband since he’s an outdoor enthusiast.

When it comes to health and wellness, is there anyone you admire or look up to? Why?

I really admire anyone who starts this journey. Health and wellness is a journey and not a destination. I have one friend who lost nearly 100 pounds through exercise and healthy eating. She is my inspiration. I admire people who are willing to try something new, something that makes us uncomfortable that we end up really enjoying.

How do you approach emotional well-being?

I have a great village that I surround myself with. We keep each other accountable in our friendships, our marriages, and balancing work and life. I regularly invest in my emotional well-being in a number of ways including meditation, expressing gratitude, and looking for spaces to be creative

and innovative. I really enjoy helping others, so I tend to look for others who like to serve humanity in that same way. I love to laugh. I think laughter can release stress, improve our moods, and create connections. I can be quite silly with family and friends, so I always take delight in a good laugh.

What does your daily routine look like?

I start my day off with prayer and meditation before I spend about an hour working out. I like to do weight training or go for a walk or jog. I then get ready and head to work. After the workday, I will sometimes take a walk with my husband, and it’s a great opportunity to catch up on each other’s day. Then we have dinner before winding down and getting ready for bed. I try to avoid electronics about 30 minutes before bed. It’s not a perfect routine, but I try to maintain it throughout the week.

What do you find the most rewarding?

Helping others understand and reach their purpose, and really cultivating relationships so others can win. I’m the biggest cheerleader!

76 healthscopemag.com
MEET OUR MODEL

How do you encourage health and wellness within your family?

My husband and I work out together, whether that’s going for a hike, paddleboarding, or walking after dinner. When I’m back home in St. Louis, I take walks with my siblings and play with my nieces and nephews. We just try to make it part of our daily lives. I also try to change my mindset around healthy living practices. It’s not something I have to do but rather something I get to do. Each day is not perfect, but it’s an opportunity to just do a little better than we did the day before or the week before. It’s all about finding out what you enjoy and then cultivating opportunities to do those activities more often.

Curtains, Shades, and Blinds. Oh My!

From selecting shades to budgeting for blinds, the world of window treatments can be a daunting place. Window treatments not only help drive home your personal style and pull a room together, but they also have greater implications when it comes to privacy, safety, and cleaning. Here, we’ve outlined a few things to keep in mind the next time you want to welcome new window treatments into your home.

Form & Function

Perhaps the No. 1 thing to keep in mind when selecting window treatments is the function. Are you looking to reduce a glare while keeping your space airy and bright or do you want to completely block out light for a good night’s sleep? Are your windows easily accessible or do you have vaulted ceilings or furniture that make it more of a chore to make adjustments? Knowing the answers to these questions is a great first step to finding the right solution.

Privacy

The levels of privacy you’re looking for are likely to change throughout your home. While sheers may be the perfect pick for a sunny dining room

or a whimsical living area, you’ll likely want a product that offers more discretion in areas of the home such as bedrooms and bathrooms. If you love the look of some of the more transparent options on the market, consider supplementing it with an option that offers more privacy.

Safety

For those with kids and pets, even the most ordinary of household objects can sometimes present a danger. When it comes to selecting your window treatments, consider avoiding blinds with strings that hang low or tailor a solution that places them out of reach. Also, take care to make sure curtain rods are securely mounted to the wall and won’t topple down with the slightest tug of a drape.

Cleaning

While blinds and shutters don’t need to be professionally cleaned, they can in fact be dust magnets. You’ll want to keep this in mind when shopping around. By contrast, curtains, drapes, and shades will hide dust and dirt better but when it does come time for a cleaning, the process is a little more involved and is best left to dry cleaners.

Window Treatments 101

Shutters / These are typically solid wood or vinyl and are fixed to the sides of windows with permanent hardware.

Shades / Often made from fabric, grasses, or woven woods, these solid sheets of cloth are typically mounted inside and at the top of the window.

Blinds / Similar to the look of shutters, blinds tend to only be fixed to the top of the window and are sometimes made from more flexible materials.

Curtains / More informal in nature, curtains hang on either side of a window and are made of fabric panels that can be pulled together.

Drapes / Drapes are identical to curtains but tend to be made from a thicker, more luxurious, and formal fabric that is often lined.

Mom,

As a child growing up, you always taught me to be better, do more, never settle, and be the best person I can be. Being a young mother to two girls, you exemplified strength and lured the essence of hope. We maneuvered through the housing system while you completed nursing school, showing my sister and I through your actions to always pursue your dreams and never give up. You eventually became a registered nurse for a local hospital here in Chattanooga and didn’t stop there. After getting an increase in pay from being a CNA to now an RN, you purchased your first house. Later, you started your own business which eventually turned into businesses. You did all of this while fighting for the rights of the elderly and disabled and giving veterans the ability to thrive in their communities. Little did you know, you were teaching me to always fight. Fight for justice, fight for hope, and fight for what you love. I look at you through your aging eyes and still see that mother who I saw taking me to daycare asking me, “How much do you love me” and I would answer, “I love you more than the whole wide world.” That’s because I do. My first best friend, my cheerleader, my encourager, my shoulder to lean on, my inspiration, my mother.

Beth,

Since you came into my life over a decade ago, I’ve seen you handle difficulties with incredible grace and humor, selflessly serve those around you, and love on everyone in your life, whether through a home-cooked meal, opening your home, or a beautifully knit blanket. You tirelessly invest in the lives of those you love and give them a sense of belonging when they need it most, never asking for anything in return. You are a constant to those around you through times of loss, sorrow, joy, and growth.

In a world that often seems devoid of genuine connection and compassion, you exemplify what it means to truly care for others. Your ability to listen attentively and offer words of encouragement and wisdom have been a source of strength for me over the years, from a struggling college student to a mom of three. You are a true friend, mentor, and role model to me, inspiring me to approach life with authenticity, an open heart, and an unwavering dedication to serving others.

You are truly a gift to me and the many people (and animals!) you’ve touched with your genuine kindness and warmth.

Wendy,

I often thank God for the amazing person and treasured gift you are to this world. I am so grateful for the genuine grace and love that you bring to my life and to so many others. You fill hearts, inspire minds, and warm souls in so many ways. Your witty and joyful spirit is contagious, your character and goodness are true, your work ethic and loyalty are unmatched, and your generosity abounds.

I love the peace and smiles you bring to my heart, and I equally have the deepest respect for your fierce devotion to your values and your tenacity to stand up for them. Your unwavering faith and mentorship have an incredible influence on my whole family, and your humility and willingness to be vulnerable anchors and guides me. With you, I feel His presence and know I can be my true and best self.

Having a trusted friend like you is a rare and coveted gift, and I am deeply grateful. You are an inspiration, and I am in awe of your beautiful balance of grit and grace. It is an honor and pleasure, that I am most thankful for, to walk through this life with you my dear friend (and soul sister)!

Sarah,

Almost 10 years ago I walked into your office at the BDC, and the first thing I saw was a print that said, “Celebrate every day like it’s your birthday.” It told me everything I needed to know about you. You’re the life of the party, an incredibly creative businesswoman, and a wonderful friend to everyone you meet. Over the last decade, you’ve encouraged me to embrace every facet of my life while honoring and recognizing countless others in their times of triumph. Most notably to me, during Covid, you saw a huge opportunity to expand the queendom by doing what you do best, showing up for your people. In a time when your friends needed you most, you found a way to care for them through food and grow it into a business giving us all what we truly needed - connection. And tomato pies.

Through knowing you, I’ve become a better business owner, sister, daughter, and most importantly friend. Thank you, Sarah, for showing us all what it means to celebrate the everyday. Nice girls forever!

Dating Details

First dates can be nerve-wracking. Between choosing the perfect location and wondering if you and your date will click, you may not have thought of things to talk about that go beyond small talk, but it’s a good idea to brainstorm conversation topics that will help you really get to know your date. We asked a couple of local experts why good questions are so important and what they like to ask on a first date.

PARENTING & RELATIONSHIPS 94 healthscopemag.com

Sail Past Small Talk

As Anna Reeves McCutcheon at First Things First explains, “If you are someone who dates with a committed relationship in mind, then it’s crucial to suss out compatibility. I treat first dates like an interview, but they can still be a lot of fun!” Open-ended, exploratory questions are key to really getting your date talking compared to questions that can be answered with a simple yes or no. Jenifer Sartain, founder of The Dating Initiative, illustrates the point, saying, “A great question opens the door for your date to share a part of themselves with you. Questions can convey that you value their input, you care about their current state, you want to know more about them, and so much more.”

When you’re planning a first date, you’ll want to have a lot of opportunities for conversation, but there are a couple of ways to go about it. If you’re opting for conversation over a meal, you won’t want to go to a place that’s either too loud or too quiet. Instead, “aim for a restaurant that you know has great acoustics, ideal background noise, and comfortable table spacing,” Sartain explains. Or, if you’re more comfortable doing activities while you talk, try taking a walk through a park or along a greenway, she says. Not sure where to begin? Try out one of these conversation starters on your next date!

Jenifer’s Top 3 First Date Questions

1. “If you could switch jobs with anyone in the world for one day, who/what job would you choose?”

2. “Someone gives you $500 and tells you that you can’t spend it on bills; you have to get something that’s a want, not a need. What do you get?”

3. “Describe your ideal day off. Are you sleeping or getting up and moving? What’s for lunch? Relax or do something productive?”

1. “If you have an entire Saturday to yourself, what would you do?” This is an excellent question because it tells you so much. This question can give you a good idea if they’re introverted or extroverted, what they value, what you have in common, and more.

2. “What do you want your future home to look like/be like?” This is a fun way of asking the cliché question, “Where do you see yourself in 5-10 years?”

3. “What are your spiritual beliefs?” This can be daunting, but you’ll want to ask this question if you are a person whose spiritual beliefs are foundational to your life.

Caring for Cast Iron

Cast iron skillets are sturdy cookware that can last a lifetime with proper upkeep. However, concerns about its complicated care process often keep people from making the swap to cast iron. Using and cleaning cast iron may look a little different than with other cookware, but it’s well worth the investment and much simpler than it may seem. Read on to learn how to care for your cast iron, so you can enjoy it for years to come!

How to Clean Your Cookware

You should always wash cast iron skillets by hand. It’s best to clean your skillet after use, while it’s still warm. Rinse with warm water and use a brush or scraper to remove stuck-on food. Once washed, dry thoroughly with a cloth or paper towel. Make sure the skillet is completely dry before storing it to prevent rust.

To remove especially stubborn food residue, simmer a small amount of water in the skillet for three to five minutes and then use a pan scraper to remove it. Scorched residue can be removed by heating up salt in the skillet over high heat. Simply rinse out the salt afterward and wash and dry as usual.

The Secret to Seasoning

Cast iron needs to be seasoned to perform well, but what exactly does that mean? In this case, seasoning refers to layers of oil baked into the surface. This protective coating is key to keeping your skillet rust-resistant and nonstick. Brand new cast iron products are typically seasoned in the factory and come ready to use, but if you need to re-season an old skillet or buy one used, it’s good to know how.

How to Season Your Skillet:

1. Scrub the skillet with warm water. Rinse and dry thoroughly.

2. Use a paper towel to coat the surface with a neutral oil like vegetable oil, including the bottom and handle. Wipe away any excess until no visible residue remains.

3. Bake the skillet upside down in the oven at 450° for one hour. Place a large baking sheet or aluminum foil on the bottom rack to catch any oil that drips.

4. Remove and let cool.

5. Your skillet is now seasoned and ready for use!

The Do’s and Don’ts of Cast Iron

Do:

Clean and dry your skillet immediately after use.

Use a non-scratch sponge while cleaning.

Use gentle utensils while cooking, such as wood, silicone, and rubber.

Use soap as needed. Contrary to popular belief, the occasional small amount of gentle soap won’t strip the seasoning.

Don’t:

Soak your skillet or leave it out to dry. Water is a recipe for rust.

Use steel wool or a metal scrubber while cleaning.

Store food in your skillet. Put it in the dishwasher.

Gala of Hope Co-Chairs

Rhea & Scott Greene

Scott and Rhea Greene may be new to Chattanooga, but they are excited for this new chapter in their life, including co-chairing the American Cancer Society Gala of Hope. Like many others, the Greene’s family has been impacted by cancer. Nine years ago, Scott’s mother was diagnosed with lung cancer. At the same time, the family learned that his mother’s sister had also been diagnosed with cancer. Unfortunately, both lost their battles with this horrible disease within two months.

“This is why chairing the Gala of Hope is so important to us. Rhea and I want to spread awareness about cancer prevention and raise money for the many people who bravely fight for their lives each day,” Scott explains. “Please join us for ‘Unmasking the Future’ and help make a difference in the lives of cancer patients and their families – in Chattanooga and across the world.”

V-Ups

Start by lying flat on your back with your arms extended overhead and palms facing up. Visualize your hips as the hinge point, and simultaneously lift arms and feet toward the ceiling by squeezing your abdominal muscles so your body creates a narrow V position at the top of the motion. Slowly return to the start position, keeping your legs straight throughout the entire motion. Do three sets of 15 reps.

Back Extensions

Start by lying facing down with arms by your side and palms flat on the ground. Simultaneously raise hands and arms off the ground by squeezing shoulder blades together while also squeezing your glutes, raising your legs and feet off the ground. Keep your toes pointed throughout the movement, and slowly release back to start position.

A variation of the exercise can be done by bringing your arms above your head with palms flat on the ground. Simultaneously bring arms off the mat and squeeze through glutes to raise legs off the ground, creating an arch in your back while keeping toes pointed. Pull arms back into a W position while fully arched up. Slowly release and straighten arms as you return to the start position.

Side Planks

Lying on one side with your body straight, position your lower arm under your shoulder with your forearm perpendicular to your body. Stack your upper foot on top of your lower foot, making sure your body is in a neutral and straight lengthwise position. Rest your other hand on your hip, and squeeze through your side muscles as you lift your body off the ground in a plank position. Do three sets of 15 up-down reps or three sets of 15-second holds on each side.

Single Leg Bridge

Lying face up with a pillow or rolled towel under your head, place your arms down by your sides with palms flat on the ground. Keeping your heels on the ground, bend your legs at a roughly 90-degree angle so your knees are in the air. Lift one leg while using the other leg to raise the lower body off the ground as high as possible. Leave your arms, upper back, and opposite heel on the ground. Make sure to keep the pelvic bone level throughout the movement. Do three sets of 15 reps on each side.

Side-Lying Hip Abduction

Lying on one side with a rolled towel to support your hip, place your lower arm on the ground to support your head. Stack your feet and make sure your body is straight and not tilting forward or backward. Slowly raise the upper leg as high as possible while keeping it straight and the foot still throughout the motion. Slowly lower back to the start position and repeat. The upper hand can press into the floor for balance and to help maintain the correct neutral body position. Do three sets of 30 reps on each side, and add ankle weights for an added challenge.

It was emotional for many...

The day Tim Price’s grandson took his hand to lead him out of Siskin Hospital, after six months as an inpatient. Tim, his family and his entire treatment team, who lined his pathway to cheer him home, all cried tears of joy. Despite arriving to Siskin Hospital completely paralyzed from the neck down due to Guillain-Barre, Tim WALKED back out the front doors.

A miracle.

Yes.

And one that wouldn’t have happened without the specialized technology at Siskin Hospital.

Tim’s team of therapists, nurses and physicians used every piece of technology available in their inpatient facility and medical model tness center to ensure he was able to regain the skills he had lost. From a lift that transferred Tim from place to place before he could even move, to various technologies that helped him regain balance, take his rst steps again, bring life back to his arms, learn rst to swallow and then to eat, & much more, Tim’s Siskin Hospital “family” was able to match their passion to get him back to life, with tools to make it a reality. Without this life changing equipment, Tim would not have been able to return home. And this precious moment would never have happened.
