Timms talks dairy to the Town and Country Kiwanis Leo L. Timms, professor emeritus of animal science at Iowa State University and member of the Town and Country Kiwanis Club recently presented the topic: “Iowa Dairy Industry: Past, Present, and Future! You Make the Call”: to the members and guests of the club. Professor Timms told his audience Iowa had 1.5 million cows in 1934; Today, there are 220,000 cows distributed in more than 1,000 herds. Most are located in northwest
and northeast Iowa. Also, the average milk production is about 25,000 pounds per cow per year. Total Iowa production is about 5.3 billion pounds of milk in Iowa per year. Milk is used for fluid use, butter, yogurt, ice cream and other dairy foods. About 65 percent of Iowa’s milk is used for cheese production. In 1940, more than a quarter million pounds were used for making butter. Timms empha-
sized each Iowa cow provides $25,454 of economic value to the state. Iowa is a major leader in the U.S. dairy industry, ranking 12th in milk production after California, Wisconsin, Idaho, New York and Texas (ranked from first to fifth). He also discussed the financial impact of the COVID-19 virus pandemic on milk producers and the industry generally. He seems optimistic for their future. Timms reminds all June is Dairy Month.

Carla Edleman awarded Stratton 4-H Scholarship from Iowa 4-H Foundation Carla Edleman, from Story County was awarded the Stratton 4-H Scholarship through the Iowa 4-H Foundation this spring. The Iowa 4-H Foundation has announced the recipients of more than 90 Iowa 4-H scholarships valued at more than $100,000. More than 400 applications were submitted and scholarships have been awarded to recipients from 54 counties across the state of Iowa with a wide variety of 4-H experiences. Throughout her nine years in 4-H, Edleman has explored valuable life skills and had the opportunity to exhibit her livestock at local, state and national shows. Edleman served on leadership roles within her club and on the Story County Youth Council, where she has planned numerous service projects and events. Edleman enjoyed showing her swine and lamb projects around the state and nation.
Through this experience she learned the value of hard work and found a passion for agriculture. As an older 4-H’er Edleman mentored Clover Kids within the Sheep Project and younger 4-H’ers within her club. One of Edleman’s favorite memories from 4-H was attending State Conference and cultivating new friendships with other 4-H’es. Edleman will attend Iowa State University in the fall and study agricultural studies, with minors in agronomy and marketing. Edleman says, “My 4-H experiences have helped to develop a well-rounded view of my community and my country.” “We are so proud of our 4-H scholarship recipients, knowing that they have had challenges to overcome this year,” said Emily Saveraid, executive director of the Iowa 4-H Foundation. “These scholarships honor and reward hard work and dedication. We are thankful
for the many scholarship donors who fund these important opportunities for Iowa 4-H’ers.” Stratton Memorial and the Stratton family provide this scholarship to an eligible applicant that resides in Boone, Fremont, Mills, Story or Plymouth County. It is available to any college undergraduate attending ISU that is pursuing a four-year degree in Iowa State’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. Avery Mather, from Story County was awarded the Roberts Family 4-H Scholarship through the Iowa 4-H Foundation this spring. The Iowa 4-H Foundation has announced the recipients of more than 90 Iowa 4-H scholarships valued at more than $100,000. Over 400 applications were submitted and scholarships have been awarded to recipients from 54 counties across the state of Iowa with a wide variety of 4-H experiences. As a result of being in 4-H, Mather has learned leadership and communication skills and knows the importance of community involvement. As a leader within the Story County Youth Council, Mather had the opportunity to share her leadership skills with other 4-H’ers. Mather also led within her livestock project areas as a Junior Superintendent of the Beef Department. 4-H provided Mather with opportunities for leadership, friendship, and citizenship. On a trip to Kansas City in seventh grade, she grew friendships that will last a lifetime. Mather says 4-H has confi rmed her passion for agriculture, and she will continue to chase that passion at Iowa State University to double major in animal science and agricultural Business. “I am most grateful for the friendships and relationships that I have gained, thanks in part to County Council. “This group of kids want
to be at every event and meeting and have a desire to make 4-H and our fair the best it can be,” says Mather. “We are so proud of our 4-H scholarship recipients, knowing that they have had challenges to overcome this year,” said Emily Saveraid, executive director of the Iowa 4-H Foundation. “These scholarships honor and reward hard work and dedication. We are thankful for the many scholarship donors who fund these important opportunities for Iowa 4-H’ers.” Provided by Lloyd, Sharon Roberts and Kurt Roberts, this scholarship is given to an eligible applicant that demonstrates a need for financial assistance and provides evidence of community service. They must be a resident of or a 4-H’er in Boone, Cass, Marion, Montgomery or Story county. Benjamin Rima Awarded Goering Communications 4-H Scholarship from Iowa 4-H Foundation Benjamin Rima, from Story County, was awarded the Goering Communications 4-H Scholarship through the Iowa 4-H Foundation this spring. The Iowa 4-H Foundation has announced the recipients of more than 90 Iowa 4-H scholarships valued at more than $100,000. More than 400 applications were submitted, and scholarships have been awarded to recipients from 54 counties across the state of Iowa with a wide variety of 4-H experiences. Through participation in communications, food and nutrition, and photography project areas, Rima was able to identify his passion for communications and marketing. Using his expertise, he organized 4-H youth photographers to document and publicize his county fair. Rima says the communications project area built his confi-
dence and helped him in many aspects of life. He was selected to participate on the County Youth Council, State 4-H Council (highlight of his 4-H experience) and to attend National Congress. Rima will be attending Iowa State University to dual major in marketing and business management with a minor in Spanish. Rima says, “4-H has provided me with the skills to identify a need in the community and work alongside others to help that need.” “We are so proud of our 4-H scholarship recipients, knowing that they have had challenges to overcome this year,” said Emily Saveraid, executive director of the Iowa 4-H Foundation. “These scholarships honor and reward hard work and dedication. Culhane talks COVID impact to Ames Golden K Kiwanis Ames Golden K recently virtually hosted Ames Chamber of Commerce’s Dan Culhane at its weekly meeting at 9 a.m. Thursday. Culhane spoke about how the mandated closures due to the pandemic have been hurtful, with overall impact on Ames businesses to be determined as they now gradually reopen. The loss in revenue over the past 13 weeks has been especially devastating to Ames hotels, which have lost $6 million. Unemployment has increased from 1.7 percent to 8.4 percent. Good things have also occurred. Ames community leaders have “led”; United Way has furnished considerable aid to those in need; state and federal aid, especially small business relief to 120 Story County businesses, has been of great help. The Ames Chamber
of Commerce has never worked so hard and has been successful in helping unveil several positive economic developments for Ames and Story County. Going forward, the Chamber of Commerce has led the organizing of the Gift Cards Program, for sale and redeemable at many Ames business locations. “Story County Strong” is a motto developed by the Chamber and used in all posters, videos, etc., distributed since the beginning of the pandemic restrictions. Culhane concluded his remarks by reviewing the status of the Ames Research Park (one new tenant moving in soon); the status of the redevelopment at Clark Street and Lincoln Way; North Grand Mall area development; and Campustown development initiatives. Also, Golden K Member and Iowa
State University Professsor Jim Cornette was recognized for completing the annual Bolder Boulder, Colo., 10K run virtually, by running the Ames Run For The Roses 10K course on Memorial Day, the date for Bolder Boulder which was postponed this year due to the pandemic.
