Martha’s House of Hope receives grant funds from Ames Home Builders Association In January 2020, Martha’s House of Hope was the recipient of a $650 grant from the Ames Home Builders Association to purchase CPR training manikins. This provided funds for Martha’s House of Hope to purchase one set of CPR manikins for volunteers and residents to use to complete CPR training. This purchase al-

lows Martha’s House of Hope (MHOH) to do all volunteer training

in-house so that volunteers can begin serving the needs of our

residents, as MHOH’s executive director is certified by the American Red Cross to facilitate First Aid, CPR, and AED training. It also allows MHOH to train its residents on CPR so they have this skill as new parents. Martha’s House of Hope is a maternity home in Ames. The organization’s goal is to provide shelter, life skills and hope

to pregnant mothers and their babies while helping to impart selfreliance, a sense of service and the realization of their God-given dignity. for both those new to voting as well as veteran voters. The website provides information on how to become a registered voter; the location of your correct polling place; information on early voting and absentee ballots; provides information on invited candidates and their positions on important

issues; and even allows the user to build a “ballot” of candidate preferences that can be taken to the polls on election day. This year, League of Women Voters of Ames and Story County has invited all of the candidates from two contested primary races in Story County to provide input to the

VOTE411 voter guide. Those races include the Story County Board of Supervisors and the Iowa Senate District 24. The League of Ames and Story County is also sponsoring two online forums for the candidates in the two contested primary races. The fi rst forum will

include candidates for the Story County Board of Supervisors and will be at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, May 14. The second forum will be at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, May 21, and will feature primary candidates for State Senator District 24. For information and to register to

Barnes talks mental health with Town and Country Kiwanis Lisa Barnes, licensed clinical care worker in Ames, recently visited the Town and Country Kiwanis Club by the virtual computer program ZOOM. She led a discussion of the current status of mental health care in Iowa and locally with the members of the club. She compared Iowa’s mental health care with other states, including Colorado, Washington, Minnesota and Maine. She discussed our care needs relating to parenting and family health needs; our caretakers of brain injury and memory loss patients; amid isolation

Barnes’ discussion was enlightening and informative for the club members. They requested she visit the club when we are physically able to meet as a group.

Mennecke selected for Rosenfeld undergraduate research internship Jonathan Mennecke, an Iowa State University kinesiology and health major from Ames, was selected as a spring 2020 Louise Rosenfeld Undergraduate Research intern in the College of Human Sciences. Mennecke is working with James Lang, assistant professor in

kinesiology, to study the positive effects of a cardiovascular disease treatment involving brief periods of reduced limb blood flow. The Louise Rosenfeld Undergraduate Research Internship Program is designed to equip Iowa State University College of Hu-

man Sciences undergraduate students with first-hand research experience while they contemplate studying toward an advanced degree. The program offers interns excellent opportunities to work with faculty and learn how to conduct research in their academic fields.

McGarry receives CALS Council Senior Award Madeline McGarry, of Ames and graduating with a degree in agricultural and life sciences education from Iowa State University, received the award for Outstanding Ambassador of Agriculture and Life Sciences from the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) Student Council. This award is given to a student showing exceptional effort in building a connection between the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and the community. Madeline was very involved in the Department of Agriculture

Education and Studies during her career as a student. She served in multiple leadership roles, including president, in Agricultural Communicators of Tomorrow and represented the club on the department banquet committee. She was co-editor of CALS Connections, a CALS student publication, and as a reporter for the Iowa State Daily. Additionally, Madeline participated in the CALS Dean’s Global Agriculture and Food Leadership Program in Rome. “Maddy used her experiences at Iowa

State to propel her into opportunities throughout the country and the world. She capitalized on the advantage that comes with being a student in CALS, going out of her comfort zone, and making the most of those opportunities that provided her personal growth. She exemplifies pride in her involvement with the college and connections to the Iowa State family,” said Cole Eden, 2020 president of CALS Council. Award recipients were recognized during the virtual college convocation event on Friday, May 8.

Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society initiates 84 Iowa State students Eighty-four Iowa State students with a major in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (LAS) were initiated into the prestigious Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society this May. Founded in 1776 at the College of William and Mary in Virginia, Phi Beta Kappa recognizes students for outstanding academic achievement in a broad curriculum in the liberal arts and sciences. Nevada FFA Greenhouse ‘Grab & Go’ curbside activity With all school activities cancelled due to COVID-19 biosecurity measures, Nevada High School agriculture education & FFA had to determine a plan for the spring greenhouse crop of geranium baskets, owering annuals, and some vegetables.
