In ‘Knives Out,’ a whodunit for the Trump era BY JAKE COYLE The Associated Press

Rian Johnson’s “Knives Out” unravels not just a good old-fashioned murder mystery but the very fabric of the whodunit, pulling at loose threads until it has intricately, devilishly woven together something new and exceedingly delightful.

For all the detective tales that dot television screens, the Agatha Christie-styled whodunit has gone curiously absent from movie theaters. The nostalgia-driven “Murder on Orient Express” (2017), popular as it was, didn’t do much to dispel the idea that the genre has essentially moved into retirement, content to sit out its days in a warm puffy armchair, occasionally dusting itself off for a remake. But Johnson has since his 2005 neo-noir debut “Brick” shown a rare cunning for

enlivening old genres with densely plotted deconstruction. He makes very clever movies (“Looper,” “Star Wars: The Last Jedi”) that sometimes, like in the madcap caper “The Brothers Bloom,” verge on showy overelaboration, of being too much. But in the whodunit, too much is usually a good thing. Give us all the movie stars, plot twists and murder weapons you can find. When done well, there is almost nothing better. And “Knives Out,” while it takes a little while to find its stride, sticks the landing, right up to its doozy of a last shot. The whodunit turns out not only to still have a few moves left but to be downright acrobatic. The film begins like many before it: with a dead body that needs accounting for. Harlan Thrombey (Christopher Plummer), a bestselling mystery writer, is found with his throat cut in a small upstairs room in his sprawling Victorian mansion. Production designer David Crank deserves much credit for the film’s fabulously ornate and much-paneled setting — a Clue board come to life and a home that could rival the modernist abode of “Parasite” for movie house of the year. Thrombey is extremely wealthy with an expansive family of spoon-fed, entitled eccentrics that would likely mix well with the dynasty of HBO’s “Succession.” And

as much intrigue as there is about Harlan’s death, for his children there’s even more about his inheritance. There’s his relator daughter Linda (Jamie Lee Curtis) and her cheating husband Richard (Don Johnson), a vocal Trump supporter; his son Walt (a sweater-wearing Michael Shannon) who runs his father’s publishing house and is married to Joni (Toni Collette); and his grandson Ransom (Chris Evans), the arrogant black sheep of the family. There are others, too, most notably Harlan’s trusted caregiver Marta (Ana de Armas). The Thrombeys casually refer to her as “the help” and, in a running gag, are all over the map when it comes to her native South American country. A deeper political dimension slowly takes shape as the family’s cavalier indifference to Marta plays a role in the movie’s unspooling mysteries. Juggling themes of class privilege, immigration and ethnocentricity, “Knives Out” is a whodunit for the Trump era. Some mysteries first submerge themselves in set-up, the crime in question and the entrance of its central detective. Johnson is too restless for such an approach. He favors flashbacks, by the boat load, to go along with elaborate plot mechanics of reversals and perspective switcheroos. That gives “Knives Out” a somewhat clunky and imperfectly paced

first act, something Johnson makes up for with the payoff of his finale. But for a movie with so many fine actors having so much fun, we get surprisingly little of the Thrombeys as a whole. Instead, our detective calls almost immediately. Enter Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig), a flamboyant Louisiana investigator of such renown that he’s already been profiled in the New Yorker as “the last of the gentleman sleuths.” Even with such immaculate set dressing all around him (the mystery writer’s house is decorated throughout with murder weapons, including a throne of knives), Craig still manages to chew plenty of scenery with his heavily accented Southern-style Poirot. One calls him “Foghorn Leghorn,” another “CSI: KFC.” He’s accompanied by another detective (an underused Lakeith Stanfield) but he quickly makes Marta his sidekick; she has a useful aversion to lies, throwing up every time she tells one. But “Knives Out,” in the end, believes earnestly in the whodunit, it just wants to turn it inside out. To say more about that would spoil the fun. But keep an eye here, and elsewhere, on de Armas. The “Blade Runner 2049” actress (soon to be seen in the next James Bond film, also with Craig) isn’t the biggest star in a film awash with A-listers. But with neither cloak nor dagger, she seizes “Knives Out.” It’s hers.

LOS ANGELES — “Frozen 2” kept a wintry wind at its back in its second week, setting a Thanksgiving record with a whopping box office bounty, while newcomer “Knives Out” found its own broad audience. Disney’s new set of adventures for Anna, Elsa and Olaf brought in $85.3 million in the U.S. and Canada over the weekend and earned an unprecedented $132.7 million for the holiday frame of Wednesday through Sunday, according to studio estimates. The first “Frozen” opened on Thanksgiving in 2013, but the sequel opened a week prior to the holiday, making it poised for a huge second week, with out-of-school kids happy to see it a second or a third time. “Having the opening weekend falling a few days ahead of Thanksgiving really set it up perfectly,” said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for the box office tracker Comscore. That came on top of a record-burying opening

weekend of $127 million debut domestically and $350.2 million worldwide that made it the highestgrossing global debut for any animated film globally, and the largest opening for any for any Walt Disney Animation Studios release. The original film and its world-making song “Let It Go” became a popculture phenomenon, earning $1.27 billion worldwide and selling countless Elsa and Anna dresses. The sequel has more than showed that the six years since has brought no thaw. It has already earned $739 million globally and should certainly surpass the original’s totals. “Disney is usually immune to the waning interest that audience have with some sequels,” Dergarabedian said. And “Knives Out,” the innovative whodunit from writer and director Rian Johnson, rode great reviews and strong social media buzz to a $27 million weekend and a fiveday domestic total of $41.7 million that easily earned back its budget.

‘Imperfect Circle’ Capitol Nashville

Come roll back the years with Hootie & the Blowfish. Their new 13-track offering will transport you to when Bill Clinton was in office and the Macarena took over America. “Imperfect Circle,” their first studio album in almost 15 years, picks off right where they left off, with earnest and yet utterly forgettable songs. They’re nice when you play them but make no discernible impression. For any younger readers, a refresher: Hootie & the Blowfish emerged from the University of South Carolina with a laid-back, post-grunge and cheerful mix of rootsy rock and country. Saddled with a name that aged poorly — both parts are nicknames for guys not even in the band — Hootie & the Blowfish took the best new artist title

at the 1996 Grammys thanks to such hits as “Hold My Hand,” ‘’Let Her Cry” and “Only Wanna Be With You,” and then took their place with other inoffensive college bro-rockers like Blues Traveler and Counting Crows. The intervening decades have done nothing to darken the Hootie vibe. In fact, lead singer Darius Rucker seems even more disengaged, writing love songs to his longtime wife and reminding listeners he’s a lucky, lucky man. “Why’s a beauty queen standing here with me?” he asks Rucker’s voice has a deeper baritone and a more pronounced twang, showing the influence of his years as a country chart-topper. But the songs are mushy. “Wildfire Love” featuring Lucie Silvas was co-written by Ed Sheeran but neither make it spark. “Hold On” is co-written by Chris Stapleton and wastes some funky guitar. The majority of the album was produced by Jeff Trott, who has — surprise, surprise — worked with Counting Crows. Though Rucker insists in “Change” that life is always altering, nothing on this album is fresh. Most of the lyrics sound like what you’d find stitched onto the pillows of a hippie baby boomer — “Mondays are

just Fridays in disguise,” ‘’There ain’t nothing that a little love can’t get us through” and “Tell me to and I will shoot down the moon.” Rucker is all about a can’t-we-justget-along ethos. The closest he gets to socially conscious is the cheerful, Hawaiian-tinged “We Are One,” in which he blithely sings, “You and I, to the left or to the right/Meet you somewhere in between.” That would be the middle — the mushy middle. — By Mark Kennedy, The Associated Press

‘Blood’ Autotelic/Thirty Tigers

Darkness is the first word of one song and a recurring image on “Blood.” No wonder — Allison Moorer’s autobiographical album explores damage done by her parents’ murder-suicide in 1986 when she was 14. Moorer has also written a new memoir, and “Blood” makes the personal universal, with inspiration to be found in songs of skeletons and ghosts, loss and healing. At the heart of the album is the question Moorer poses: “Can I untie the tie that binds?” she sings, tethered to tragedy.

Her father shot his wife and then himself, and the facts are set out in “Cold Cold Earth,” a front porch murder ballad that sounds ancient but actually dates only to 2000, when it appeared on Moorer’s second album. Nearly 20 years later, there’s still an ache in her voice. “Such a sad, sad world,” she sings. The music confronts and strives to surmount the pain. Moorer expresses sympathy for her troubled father as she sings from his perspective on “Set My Soul Free.” “Nightlight” is a love song directed at her older sister, singer Shelby Lynne, the beauty of their bond transcending the family wreckage. But there’s still anger, and fatigue. “The Rock and the Hill” hits hard, with Moorer singing as her mother, describing a difficult marriage. Eerie pedal steel and discordant fiddle reinforce the mood elsewhere, but the arrangements are mostly stark, befitting the subject matter. The set ends with the ballad “Heal,” which finds Moorer at the piano in prayer. “No matter how I try, I end up on the ground, another orphan waiting in the lost and found,” she sings. “Lord, help me heal.” She doesn’t want darkness to be the last word. — By Steven Wine, The Associated Press

NEW YORK — Forty years after a stampede left 11 people dead and 23 injured at a Who concert in Cincinnati, Pete Townshend says he’s always regretted not sticking around to deal with the aftermath. Instead, the band left the Riverfront Coliseum on December 3, 1979, and moved on to Buffalo, New York, the next stop on their tour. “I’m not forgiving us. We should have stayed,” Townshend told The Associated Press during a recent interview where he was promoting his debut novel, “The Age of Anxiety.” The tragedy occurred as fans surrounded the arena hoping to claim a seat near the stage. Thousands had waited hours to get inside, ready to charge in for first-come seating. The band didn’t find out about

the calamity until the end of the show. Townshend recalls the band’s manager, Bill Curbishley, telling him: “I’ve got something terrible to tell you.” Townshend then described the shock of seeing bodies sprawled on the ground as they left the stadium — “many of whom weren’t dead, by the way,” he said. “They didn’t know who was dead and who was just badly hurt, maybe 40 bodies under blankets.” Townshend remembered the rage he felt toward Curbishley for not telling the band about the tragedy before the show, admitting that he “wanted to kill him.” “You could at least give (us) a choice as to whether or not to go on,” Townshend said. “But the choice none of us made, which was equally dim, was that we left the building. You know, we should have

Townshend feels that enough time has passed for meaningful discussion about the Cincinnati tragedy. “How are we responsible? ... Now, we can have a conversation about it when we go back. That conversation will pick up. We will meet people and we’ll be there. We’ll be there. That’s what’s important. I’m so glad that we’ve got this opportunity to go back,” he said.

‘Irishman’ named best picture by National Board ‘Knives Out,’ ‘Parasite’ and ‘1917’ take awards as well BY JAKE COYLE The Associated Press

NEW YORK — Martin Scorsese’s sprawling crime epic “The Irishman” has been named best picture by the National Board of Review. The awards, announced Tuesday by the National Board of Review, handed Netflix its second major honor in Hollywood’s quickening awards season. On Monday evening, Noah Baumbach’s “Marriage Story” won best feature at the IFP Gotham Awards, which honor independent film. Both movies are widely expected to eventually reap numerous nominations at the Oscars, with either potentially landing Netflix its first best-picture win. “The Irishman” also took best adapted screenplay, for Steven Zaillian’s script, and an icon award for Scorsese, Robert De Niro and Al Pacino. The board, as it typically does, otherwise spread its awards around to help fill its annual gala with stars. Quentin Tarantino took best director for “Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood.” Best actress went to Renee Zellweger for her performance as Judy Garland in “Judy.” Adam Sandler won best actor for Josh and Benny Safdie’s upcoming New York thriller “Uncut Gems.” Brad Pitt, widely seen as the Oscar front-runner for

his co-leading performance in “Once Upon a Time ... in Hollywood,” won best supporting actor. The National Board of Review also threw its support behind Clint Eastwood’s upcoming docudrama on the 1996 Centennial Olympic Park bombing, “Richard Jewell,” giving it best supporting actress for Kathy Bates and breakthrough performance for Paul Walter Hauser. The picks by the National Board of Review, a long-running organization comprised of academics and film professionals, have in recent years seldom lined up with eventual Academy Awards winners. But its best-feature choice last year, “Green Book,” went on to triumph at the Oscars. Other awards included: best ensemble to Rian Johnson’s whodunit “Knives Out”; best screenplay to “Uncut Gems”; best documentary to “Maiden,” about a historic all-woman sailing crew; best foreign language film to Bong Joon Ho’s “Parasite”; best animated film to “How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World”; best directorial debut to Melina Matsoukas (“Queen & Slim”); and Roger Deakins (“1917””) for outstanding achievement in cinematography. The board additionally bestowed its freedom of expression award on both the Death Row drama “Just Mercy” and the Syrian war documentary “For Sama.” The awards will be handed out in a ceremony in New York on January 8, hosted by Willie Geist.

‘Crisis on Infinite Earths’ brings back past versions of superheroes

Brandon Routh stars in The CW’s crossover saga “Crisis on Infinite Earths,” which starts Sunday on “Supergirl.”

The CW’s annual superhero-show crossover events always gather familiar faces, but this year’s includes some blasts from the past. Past incarnations of Clark Kent and/or Superman — those played by Tom Welling on the series “Smallville” and Brandon Routh (more recently The Atom on “DC’s Legends of Tomorrow”) in the 2006 movie “Superman Returns” — appear in “Crisis on Infinite Earths,” an adaptation of a DC Comics series that starts on “Supergirl” Sunday, Dec. 8, then continues that week on “Batwoman” (Monday) and “The Flash” (Tuesday). The saga concludes Tuesday, Jan. 14, with episodes of “Arrow” and “DC’s Legends of Tomorrow.”

Advancing elements of last year’s crossover, “Elseworlds,” the story keeps alternate universes integral to the plot ... also indicated by corresponding Lois Lanes for the multiple Supermen. Elizabeth Tulloch returns as The Daily Planet’s ace reporter to “Supergirl” guest Tyler Hoechlin’s Man of Steel, and Erica Durance comes back as Lois to Welling’s Clark Kent. The crossover gave Routh a sense of completion to the Superman chapter of his career. “After finishing that film, I thought I would be doing at least one more, so saying goodbye to the character had not been something that was in my mind,” the pleasant actor reflects. “That has caused some emotional ups and downs for me since then,

so this process has been really healing for me. And also, I think it will be validating for some fans. So many people come up to me and say, ‘I don’t care what anybody says. I love ”Superman Returns“!”’ Though Durance also has been a “Supergirl” guest star, she hasn’t played Lois since “Smallville” ended in 2011. She says it was “awesome” to reunite with Welling, reasoning that “it’s like seeing family again. We worked really well together, and we hadn’t seen each other for a long time, but it was like we hadn’t missed a beat. “Now we’re parents and we’ve got little kids,” adds Durance, “and we talked about how neither of us sleeps very much anymore. And Lois Lane is a great character.”

Among others back in their DC guises for “Crisis on Infinite Earths,” Ashley Scott again takes on her “Birds of Prey” role as Helena Kyle (alias The Huntress), and Johnathon Schaech continues his “Legends of Tomorrow” portrayal of Jonah Hex. Also, Cress Williams brings his Black Lightning character from his own CW show into the supersized superhero fest. Durance confirms that being amid a plethora of costumed heroes and heroines was something special. “There were so many of us, we didn’t all necessarily get to connect,” she reports, “but it’s neat to see how they’ve pulled it all together and created these shows that the fans enjoy.”
