S

afety is one of the most critical issues that need to be addressed while working at heights. As far as the AWP operation in India is concerned, safety related guidelines are often ignored which leads to serious accident causing loss of invaluable lives and damaging other assets. However the safety awareness on AWP has increased considerably in the last couple of years though there is a long way to go. Ketan Patel, Director, Maco Corporation (India) Pvt. Ltd. believes, “With more and more infrastructure projects making it mandatory to use AWP on sites have also made the service and solution providers to enhance or offer better machines for the jobs. Also in their pursuit to value add to the existing offerings machines with enhanced safety features are being offered to the customers.” Maco offers the GENIE range of products in the Indian market. Commenting on how safe are GENIE AWPs, Mr Patel said, “GENIE machines are the safest one can get in the market. GENIE is a pioneer in the aerial work

platform segment and offers full proof solutions which are easy to install and can be shared with any other machines in the fleet.” Some of the major safety features of GENIE AWPs include: GENIE Operator Protective Structure (OPS): An optional device for installation on articulating or telescopic boom lifts and provides secondary protection for operators in the event of contact with an overhead obstacle in certain applications. GENIE Operation Protection Alarm (OPA): This system is designed to alert ground personnel when an operator makes contact with the platform control panel by interrupting boom movement, sounding an alarm and causing a light to flash. Operator’s training is of utmost importance since the safety of the people working on the machine is his responsibility. Unfortunately, in India we do not have a proper operators training centre and the training aspect for operators is unorganised. However with

the formation of the IPAF (International Powered Access Federation) India Council last year, the industry expects a few IPAF Certified Training Centres across India soon. Souma Ray, Director at Haulotte India Pvt. Ltd. says, “The operators being trained in the IPAF training centre shall be certified and shall be issued with a PAL Card that confirms that the person is competent to use an AWP. This is indeed very essential since it shall certainly help the rental players as well as End users to have their operators trained to operate AWP’s safely.” Haulotte Access Equipment are manufactured as per European CE standards conforming to EN280 safety norms. Haulotte AWPs are featured with safety cut-off systems which prevent the machine to be overloaded or work at an outreach which can result in an accident due to negligence of the operator. Haulotte has introduced an entrapment prevention system ACTIV’ Shield. This is a secondary guarding system and major feature for operators’ safety by reducing the risk of its 14

entrapment. The ACTIV’ Shield bar kits are available to be supplied factory fitted on all Haulotte diesel boom lifts. Besides they can also be retrofitted on existing machines. Nirav Doshi, Managing Director, Nido Machineries Pvt. Ltd. believes, “Anyone operating an AWP is required to be properly trained about fall protection as well as the basic safety guidelines. ‘Be

NIDO offers a complete range of equipment to work safely and efficiently at different heights and reaches. “Our AWPs are the safest equipment for work at height. We always follow the best safety norms applicable in the material handling equipment industry and try to integrate all the necessary safety features required to operate the machine smoothly and safely. All our work platforms are CE certified and we always use branded components as a standard,” claims Mr Doshi. He adds, “All our aerial work platforms can be customised as per the business requirements. Safety is our first priority and we always try to put our best effort to make the workplace safer. We conduct regular training programs in order to make the operators aware about the safe operation of the machine.” According to Mr Doshi, some of the major safety features installed in NIDO’s AWPs include Battery charge indicator, levelling indicator, safety brackets, extended stop button, emergency lowering, system, forklift pockets,

Best practices AWPs are used extensively across the world for working safely at heights. Unfortunately, in India, the safety standards and awareness related to working at heights is lacking far behind the world standards. However, over the past few years the awareness has been growing steadily which is a very encouraging sign for the AWP Industry. Good quality machines which incorporate the best safety systems, proper operator training towards operation and maintenance of machines will go a long way in giving better productivity. Mr Ray observes, “Although India has been lagging behind the developed world where use of AWPs is mandatory when working at heights, we shall have similar legislations in India too in the near future. With the pace at which the Indian economy is growing, that day is not far away. This shall certainly be the turning point for the AWP industry in India as there would be a major upswing in requirements of AWP across the country.” Mr Patel outlines some of the best practices for safe use of AWP equipment as follows: • Operator should have thorough experience of using an AWP and should be comfortable working at heights. • Operator should know the brand of machine, its features and emergency escape or lowering systems. • Operator should be aware of the machine limitations towards weather conditions as these machines elevate themselves to as high as 180 ft and have a good chance of facing very high wind forces and lighting strikes while working in the open. • The machine should have 100 per cent functioning limit switches or limiting devices and this has to be checked and ensured of their functionality before every shift and by every new 16

For example, the operator should know about possible electric induction from adjoining active power lines, presence of highly flammable hydrocarbons etc. According to Mr Doshi some of the best practices for safe use of AWP equipment are: • Ensure that only properly trained persons are authorised to operate the aerial work platform equipment. Inexperienced operators should receive proper training from a qualified instructor before attempting to operate it. • Occupants must wear a safety belt while working at height. This is the most important safety step for fall protection. Attach lanyard to the anchor provided in the platform equipment. • Never sit, stand or climb on the platform guard rails. In case of a power failure, the ground personnel should use the manual controls to lower the platform. • Keep platform floor clear of debris. Lower the platform entry mid-rail or close the entry gate before operating the machine. • Never operate the aerial work platform in strong winds that exceed 45 km/h. Never increase the surface area of the platform or the load. Increasing the

area exposed to the wind will decrease the aerial work platform stability. • Position the aerial work platform at the work area. Make sure the aerial work platform is on a firm and level surface and there are no potential hazards such as overhead obstructions or electrically charged conductors. • Conduct daily or monthly maintenance check to find out any sort of error in advance. Latest trend Increasing level of customisation of the products to suit the business type and needs is the latest trend in the access equipment industry. As the constructions are becoming increasingly complex, the demand for precision equipment is also growing. Major challenges Some of the major challenges for the growth of access equipment industry are as follows: Higher operational costs: Maintenance, capital burden to stock and carrying the machines to the desired location are some of the challenges under this head.

Logistics: Equipment rental companies are largely depended on transporter for moving machines from one site to another on a trailer. While crossing inter-state borders various documents are demanded. The complex documentation procedure which varies everywhere, imposed entry taxes and Octroi are time consuming and frustrating many a time. Managing customer needs: Customers’ requirement for access platforms varies as per their needs. Thus, a rental company needs to invest on huge diverse fleet of equipment to match the diverse requirements. This means the cost of maintenance and keeping spares increases tremendously. Increased competition: Equipment rental is one of the most unorganised and fragmented businesses in India. There are very few organised players in this segment whereas a number of small rental companies are mushrooming who provides the equipment at an errant price. Such machines are not well maintained and are potentially dangerous to work. Big companies and corporate players still prefer rental partners of repute as safety is of prime importance to them. Shortage of skilled manpower: Availability of skilled manpower like operators, hydraulic engineers and site supervisor is very less and training unskilled manpower is expensive and time consuming and their attrition remains a point of concern.

USP of Mtandt’s rental division Mtandt’s considers safety, productivity and convenience as three pillars that define its competitive edge. Some of the competitive advantages are described as below: Large and diverse rental fleet: Mtandt’s large and diverse fleet allows serving large customer base that require substantial quantities and/ 20

The infrastructure sector is a capital intensive segment. Again, operating and maintaining such capital equipment is a shear additional cost and burden to the project developers. Hence the companies prefer to outsource equipment requirement to a rental companies who have technical expertise to operate and maintain them. Though the hiring and rental business of access equipment is at a very nascent stage in India, many companies prefer to rent the equipment to save on costs. Also, with “Make in India” initiative, new opportunities are expected. Industry forecasts point to a multi-year up-cycle for equipment rentals, with an ongoing recovery in most of end markets. Customers are increasingly becoming aware about the benefits of renting. Mtandt Group seeks to seize that opportunity and to further expand its activities. n

Robbins announces Crossover Series of TBMs Dual mode machines bridge the gap in mixed ground The Robbins Crossover (XRE) TBM pictured here is at the forefront of a trend for efficient machines that can operate in mixed ground conditions.

R

obbins announced its Crossover Series of TBMs, a line of field-tested, rugged dual mode-type machines.

“The rebranding and Crossover terminology embodies the concept that the machines are able to cross over between modes,” says Home. The unique machines are a top focus point for the company. “Robbins comes at this business with extensive rock experience so everything we design comes with the assumption that there will be tough conditions. When you have to ‘cross over’ to another mode then already you are in difficult conditions, and contractors need robust machines to get through these challenges,” says Home.

At the crossroads of success Home foresees that machine sales will grow as more projects worldwide are planned in difficult and varying ground conditions. Survey results back up the trend, indicating an increased interest in Crossover-type machines worldwide. “This is a continuous evolution and we are consistently endeavouring to improve Crossover designs. We have three of the machines in production now and I see this number increasing year by year as the industry sees and accepts their n value,” Homes concludes. For more details, visit www.therobbinscompany.com

Crossover TBMs feature aspects of two TBM types, and are ideal for mixed ground conditions that might otherwise require multiple tunnelling machines. The XRE - stands for Crossover Rock /EPB - is the most common type of hybrid machine, and features characteristics of single shield hard rock machines and EPBs for efficient excavation in mixed soils with rock.

Success story An XRE TBM recently completed tunnelling at Australia’s Grosvenor Decline Tunnel, where it excavated two mine access drives at rates fourteen times faster than a traditional roadheader. The latest drive was completed on 9th February. “This was a big step forward for the mine to appropriately use civil tunnelling technology for a mining application. I take my hat off to the management of owner Anglo American Coal to have the foresight and leadership ability to take this step. Using the Crossover technology (versus the traditionally-used roadheader method), the project was finished on schedule,” said Lok Home, President, Robbins. Gaining popularity Additional types of Crossover machines include the XSE (Crossover between slurry/EPB) and the XRS (Crossover between rock/slurry) TBMs. The Crossover series is quickly gaining in popularity, with Robbins Crossover TBMs currently being assembled in Mexico, Turkey, and Azerbaijan. An XRE TBM is expected to start excavation for Mexico’s Túnel Emisor Poniente II (TEP II) later this year, while an XSE is being readied for excavation at the Baku Metro. July 2015

comments, “Industry experts are unanimous in their views that all the big projects, which used to have a time frame of 2 to 3 years, are now being completed in 18 to 22 months. The movement of the construction industry towards modernisation and mechanisation is a key factor. Secondly, contractors are time bound and face scarcity of labour. Since projects are time-bound these days, quick and timely completion is a major criterion. Scaffolding and formwork plays a major role in addressing these issues.”

Deep planning is required to buy the formwork or renting it as it involves cost and storage space, maintenance and can be useful in future projects.

Speaking more about the product details he says, “Globally, Topec slab formwork is widely used for construction. It is a simple, lightweight aluminium formwork that can be safely handled by three men, without a crane. Significant reductions in cost and increase in productivity can be achieved as compared to conventional table forms because safe erection and dismantling can be done from the ground and Topec’s large 1.8 sq.mt panels can quickly cover areas and support slab thicknesses of up to 400 mm. Smaller panels can be used to support thicker slabs of 500 to 750 mm. Topec needs no secondary or primary beams and clamps. Its main components are simply panels, props and bearings. Panels can be supported by tubular steel props with quick release mechanism propping heights up to 3.5 m are possible.”

Rent or buy? Many companies provide the required formwork system to the customer on rental basis. This helps the customers in adopting the modern system for their projects, but at a cost budgeted for that specific project only. “Interestingly, the rental option is turning about to be feasible,” shares Mr Kalantri. Further he says, “On the customers’ part, this also ensures maximum utilisation of the system with no provision required for carry over cost at the end of the project. On the other hand most of the top players in construction industry have formed a separate scaffolding and formwork division in their organisations by realising the importance of the system and its optimum utilisation.”Builders and contractors want to bring down the investments on scaffolding and formwork and are therefore happy to hire the systems at feasible rates for a stipulated time. People are opting for rentals in order to curtail investments and storage costs. Mr Udeshi states, “Deep planning is required to buy the formwork or renting it as it involves cost and storage space, maintenance and can be useful in future projects.“

For Purchase • Required for continuous or big

projects and duration for completion are very short. • Constructions of similar design work so that we can use for maximum repetition. • Having sufficient facility to store and skilled staff to maintain the same in best possible manner. • Having clear calculation of costing and profitability by using these systems.

For rent • Mid-size project, no immediate chances of repetition and even break-down are rare. • No storage facility and skilled staff to maintain the same. • Designs of constructions are different and not possible to accommodate in present stock.” “Selection between buy and rent is majorly influenced by factors i.e. size of project, time period for which material is required, percentage of non-standard and special material required etc. Though in rental option high initial investment of user is avoided but if period of rent is more then this option is not viable,” shares Mr Sharma. Rental option has advantage of initial cost minimisation and ensures maximum utilisation of scaffolding and formwork system without provision of carrying forward the cost at the end of project. He further adds, “With modern trends where projects are launched in series, strategies and planning should be made for long run and considering huge number of repetitions which any formwork system can withstand, major consideration should be given to buy the formwork system which can be treated an asset .” “Though initial investment is higher in any aluminium formwork system but considering repetitiveness of formwork, quality end results, avoiding entire plastering, safety features and less dependency on skilled work force option to buy aluminium formwork system is a viable option,” says Mr Sharma. “As greater numbers of construction companies set their priorities for success, opportunities will continue to grow for providers of formwork and scaffolding,” Mr Kalantri concludes. n Image courtesy: NOE Formwork India Pvt. Layher Allround: Ideal scaffolding system for industrial application Mithilesh Kumar, Director, Layher Scaffolding Systems Pvt. Ltd. explains the use of Layher Allround Scaffold for maintenance and construction of gas tank

L

ayher Group produces high-quality scaffolding systems in Germany. Layher has worldwide presence with more than 40 sales subsidiaries. The products are being used by industries like construction, chemical plants, power plants, shipyards and in offshore. Nowadays for demanding and complex scaffolding applications i.e. wherever conventional scaffolding technology falls short of optimal thus cost effective use, Layher Allround Scaffolding convincingly comes in with an unmatched range of advantages: unbeatably fast assembly, persuasive economic arguments and an extensive range of series-produced accessories.

More possibilities with Layher Layher’s present product characteristics and services Layher Allround for external maintenance of tank in refinery Layher Allround for internal maintenance of tank

help customers achieve long-term success and increase the profitability of their companies. The Layher Allround Scaffolding has been established as a synonym for modular scaffolds on the market. The Allround Scaffolding offers unsurpassed versatility to be used in construction sites, chemical industry, power plants, aircraft, shipyards, event sector, theatres and arenas. Allround scaffolding uses a simple, unique and bolt free connection technology. Sliding the wedge head over the rosette and inserting the wedge into the opening immediately secures the component. There is still sufficient play to secure the other end of the ledger. A hammer blow to the wedge transforms the loose connection into a superbly strong structurally rigid one. The face of the wedge head is now precisely positioned against the standard. Connections in quick to assemble and spanner less scaffolding systems make a unique combination: providing structural strength immediately on assembly and subsequent ultimate force transmission while offering a choice of automatically right – angled or splayed connections with universal safety right from the start. To transfer pulling force, every frame is secured by locking pins or bolts to each other. In this way the tower can be assembled on the ground and placed by crane.

Application of Layher Allround Scaffold for maintenance and construction of gas tank The gas tank operated by refinery is currently being refurbished, and corrosion prevention experts have to treat the entire surface of the tank. Safe access to all parts of the gas tank is assured with the use of a modular scaffolding system. By using Layher’s superior Allround equipment is only possibility to complete maintenance of circular tank. The advantage lies in the speed with which not only the right angle can be automatically obtained with the system, but also variable angles can be achieved if required. This is done by fitting the ledgers in rosettes each with four holes at right angles, with four further larger holes (usually used for diagonal braces) being used to facilitate variable angles. This means that the erectors can also make connections at any angle asdictated by the conditions on site. The Scaffolder can easily, thanks to the eight possible connections in every connector, make adaptions quickly and optimally for almost any application.

These advantages ensure the optimum conditions for effectively enclosing the round tank with scaffolding. Allround Scaffolding was easily adapted to follow the contour shape of the sphere without difficulty. The erectors didn’t need to create complex tube structures, saw off tubes all the time, repeat measuring of connections or constantly align the upright elements. The wedge head provides an all in one simple yet stable connection, coupled with a logical assembly sequence and integral safety. Hot-dip galvanisation and certified quality assure Layher’s top-quality products are extremely long-lived. Several work levels were required plus a lift going up 16 metres were required to be integrated into the

scaffolding. The challenge set by this particular job was to follow as precisely as possible the double-curved surface of the tank. This was possible due to the extensive catalogue of parts Layher are able to offer. Conventional anchoring to the tank was not possible. The scaffold erectors were only able to make connections to the all-round steel profile – the runner rail for the inspection ladders – at the tank’s “equator” using scaffold couplers. Above and below this anchoring level, the scaffolding was secured by allround steel cables. A Layher landingtype stairway tower allowed convenient access to the scaffold at various levels.

Following the increasingly tapered scaffolding radius above the equator, Layher’s Technical Bureau designed a series of connected lattice girders to the topmost Allround standards which made them converge in tension-resistant form. The scaffolders then placed the structure on the highest point of the gas tank using four Allround standards against curvature. It is only possible by using Layher Allround performance. This method has already proven its worth in time and money saving alone. n Authored by__

adhesives

Technology

Anaerobic adhesives: Liquid engineering for manufacturing and maintenance Ideal for applications that endure extreme thermal cycling such as automotive and aerospace assemblies into every tiny imperfection in the threads. Thread friction increases with the application of threadlockers due to interfacial connections to the surface roughness of the metal. The adhesive completely fills the microscopic gaps between interfacing threads to positively lock and seal threaded assemblies, preventing lateral movement and protecting the joint from corrosion that can result from moisture, gasses, and fluids.

T

ypically used to augment the seal or holding force of a mechanically joined assembly, anaerobic adhesives are used as threadlockers, thread sealants, retaining materials, and flange sealants. When designed into an assembly, these adhesives reduce component inventories, decrease total manufacturing costs, enhance equipment reliability, and minimise aftermarket breakdown and associated warrantee problems. By definition, anaerobic adhesives remain liquid until isolated from oxygen in the presence of metal ions, such as iron or copper. For example, when an anaerobic adhesive is sealed between a nut and a bolt on a threaded assembly, it rapidly “cures” or hardens to form a tough cross-linked plastic with tenacious adhesion to many metals. Though anaerobic applications differ widely, in most cases the adhesive provides high shear strength. • When used to lock threaded assemblies together, anaerobic adhesives prevent loosening and corrosion of the fastener, maintain proper clamping force, and offer controlled torque for removal of the

42

assembly. • For rigid cylindrical assemblies, such as joining a bearing onto a shaft, anaerobic adhesives known as retaining compounds enable manufacturers to bond parts that once could only be assembled using press fits or shrink fits. • Anaerobic gasketing materials are widely used as formed-in-place gaskets that produce leak-proof seals between mating flanges, preventing leakage of moisture, gasses, fluids, or contaminants. Anaerobic adhesives fixture in minutes at room temperature and fully cure within 24 hours. Full cure of anaerobic adhesives may be achieved more rapidly using short-term exposure to heat (e.g. 30 minutes at 120 C). In assemblies where a liquid primer or activator is required to accelerate cure, the primer is applied to one or both fastener surfaces before the adhesive is applied. No mixing of components is required. As an anaerobic adhesive cures in a threadlocking application, it forms polymer chains that find their way

A typical nut and bolt assembly has as little as 15 per cent metal-tometal contact. Just a few drops of liquid threadlocker fills the remaining air voids between the thread roots and then cures to a thermoset plastic which provides a 100 per cent unitised assembly until the user wants it to come apart. These adhesives offer high torque strength, good temperature resistance, rapid cure, easy dispensing, and good vibration resistance. Threadlockers are available in low, medium, and high strength formulations. Most threadlockers are colour coded for strength, with purple and blue representing low and medium strength grades, and green and red representing high strength grades. However, no threadlockers are permanent; the low and medium strength grades can be disassembled with common hand tools at room temperature, and the high strength threadlockers can be removed following direct exposure to 450 F temperatures. The strength and viscosity of the adhesive needed for an application are directly related to the size of the fastener used. Low strength threadlockers are used on screws up to ¼-inch in diameter. Medium strength materials are for fasteners up to ¾ inch in diameter. High strength threadlockers are best used on 44

g

adhesives 42

fasteners up to one inch in diameter found in permanent assembly applications. Low viscosity penetrating threadlocking formulations are also available that easily wick into pre-assembled fasteners up to ½ inch in diameter.

threadlocker to escape as the bolt is torqued down, resulting in insufficient amount of threadlocker and possible assembly failure.

In applying threadlocking adhesives, the adhesive must wet the total length of the thread engagement area. Proper wetting is dependent on the size of the thread, the viscosity of the adhesive and the geometry of the parts. If the parts are large, then wetting both faces provides the necessary reliability for adequate adhesive application.

The greatest challenges faced with traditional anaerobic adhesives have been: • Promoting cure on a wide range of metallic and non-metallic substrates that may be contaminated with grease or oil • Long-term exposure to elevated temperatures greater than 300 F • Long-term exposure to high levels of mechanical stress.

For through-hole nut and bolt assemblies, threadlocker should be applied only where the nut and bolt will meet when the assembly is fully tightened, as only adhesive between the threads will cure (Figure 2). For blind hole assemblies such as cap screws, threadlockers should be applied to both the bolt and into the bottom of the hole (Figure 3). If adhesive is applied only to the bolt, air pressure will force the liquid

New surface insensitive threadlocking formulations have been developed to be forgiving of oily and contaminated surfaces, curing in spite of residues that would inhibit cure of traditional threadlocking adhesives. In addition, these threadlockers are also designed to cure more easily on passive or inactive substrates such as plated or annodised surfaces, reducing applications where primers are needed.

While traditional threadlocking adhesives can withstand only limited temperatures (–65 F to +300 F), new anaerobic adhesives that incorporate innovative chemical technology have been formulated to maintain their integrity at temperatures up to 400 F. These products are ideal for applications that endure extreme thermal cycling such as automotive and aerospace assemblies. New toughened formulations have also been developed to provide better overall performance under extreme thermal and mechanical stress. Because these materials are tougher than traditional anaerobics, they are less impact sensitive and can withstand prolonged exposure to intense vibration, rotational, shear and tensile forces. Henkel pioneered anaerobic adhesives in the 1950’s and is one of the global leaders in adhesives, sealants and surface treatment solutions. n For more information, mail to marketing. ag@henkel.com or contact at www. henkel.in/enquiry

The braking torque remains constant across the whole 180 degrees swivel range, preventing the inadvertent closing or opening of doors, hatches or flaps. The large friction surfaces and the low-wear polyacetal used for the friction cones interact to ensure a long service life of the element. Particular mention may be the standard connection dimensions. The new friction hinges can easily be attached, for example, with the holes

of GN 237 and replace of course the standard sizes 40, 50 and 60-mm. The attractively designed hinges also comply with RoHS. The GN 437 hinges are also suitable for applications calling for a high degree of precision. The friction cone principle ensures that the radial motion and the movement in the axis of the n hinge are free of play.

Expert Column

Time for a change Jolly Lonappan, Managing Director, Blastline India explains why it is required to phase out ‘cheap’ blasting equipment and adopt the ‘efficient’ one instruction manual, free operator training, detailed drawings and spare parts list supported by prompt aftersales service. Machines of different sizes are available with various capacities like 300, 200, 100, 50 or 25 litres blast pots. Its machines are currently available in India, Far East and the Middle East.

A

brasive blast cleaning equipment available in India may be broadly classified into two major categories: • Air or dry blasting type used for open blasting applications • Airless or wheel blasting type used for blasting in controlled environments. The former type is simple, low cost equipment that is trouble free, portable and versatile. It uses compressed air as the propelling media for the blasting grit delivery. The first of its kind was made by a company called “Clemco” located in San Francisco Bay, USA. Over a period of time this basic machine evolved with modifications and innovations to its present form. Now it is being made by many manufacturers. One good thing is that the basic design is more or less the same and therefore many parts of these machines are interchangeable or compatible irrespective of the brand or make. Earlier, not many industrial coating contractors in India were conscious about quality nor there were serious manufacturers catering to this industry. Till recent times, blast machine manufactures were typically run-of-the-mill welding workshops that produced low cost blast machines

52

B2B Purchase

July 2015

with no concern for quality or safety standards whatsoever. Actually a good amount of science need to be applied behind design and production of these machines to ensure one strikes the right balance to achieve the best productivity, lowest machine down-time, availability of spare parts, safety features and cost effective pricing. Moreover, these need to be quality tested based on well defined specifications including ability to withstand very high pressures and ability to satisfy various other safety parameters based on international norms. Also, the end-user had to be provided with proper training, a clear instruction manual, and suitably sized machines to match his requirement and business model. The productivity and machine up-time is proportional to the quality of the equipment, abrasives used and the operator. Every penny spent on equipment should be paid back 100-fold in production by a reliable machine. Blastline India, in collaboration with Blastline of UK, manufactures such high quality blast machines in India. Blastline India’s manufacturing process meets international standards and its machines come with a pressure test certificate,

Growth drivers The major growth driver of this industry is population. The people are the market. Where there are more people there will be more opportunities. The large population in India coupled with the developing stage of the country makes it a gold mine for the manufactures. The other growth drivers are India’s vast coastal areas and the heavy monsoon rains that appear every year without fail. The saline and moist environment is an ideal catalyst for very high corrosion rates. The most efficient method to protect steel from corrosion is by coating. All coatings need surface preparation and hence the blast machines for surface cleaning and profiling is a necessity that should be in high demand. Further, the “Make in India” campaign should attract many new entrepreneurs into this field. Demand-supply scenario At present, 60 per cent of machines in the market are supplied by the unorganised sector where a welding work shop becomes a manufacturer who is least bothered about quality or safety standards. But, such products should get phased out as competitively priced machines start rolling out to every contractor, who hopefully will realise the effect of good equipment and its productivity on his bottom-lines in terms of blasting efficiency, down-time and safety. n Authored by__ Jolly Lonappan, Managing Director, Blastline India Pvt. Ltd.

Case Study

Shot peening made easy at Mitsubishi Steel analyse the machine set-up, identify the root causes of the problems with the machine, and find a solution.

N

on-stop production was taking its toll on the shot peening equipment at MSSC, a Mitsubishi Steel division, in Chatham, Ontario. Used exclusively to shot peen stabiliser bars for the automotive industry, the machine was experiencing a number of issues including high levels of vibration, wear on the housing and major wear and tear to the impellers inside the blast wheels. Working at full capacity - in three-shift operation, seven days a week also resulted in the need to replace blast wheel motors at a rate of 20 per year. The MSSC maintenance team called in experts from Wheelabrator Plus to

Joe Decarvalho, Wheelabrator Plus, Technical Sales Representative said, “A myriad of factors can cause operational issues of shot blast equipment and with today’s production pressures there often is little time to fix things. In the case of MSSC, however, finding the source of the problem was easy. Their operations had simply outgrown the equipment installed, in particular the blast wheels. The solution, therefore, was equally simple. Blast wheels were needed that wouldn’t be stretched by everyday requirements and tough enough to perform happily in a busy and pressured production environment at MSSC.” Collectively working with Kevin Daly, maintenance supervisor at MSSC, to find the best longevity solution, the decision was made to upgrade to 40 HP EZEFIT blast wheels to improve longevity and

permit flexibility to allow for wheel amp adjustments based on customer needs, while still meeting the demands of a high paced operation.

The result Motors on the four new EZEFIT wheels no longer have to run at full capacity, ensuring the blast wheels operate reliably and efficiently – and for longer. All four wheels were fitted with hardened impellers to withstand the pressure of the special abrasive used by MSSC for the application, drastically reducing wear and downtime. Kevin Daly said, “The wheels are now running smoothly without being forced, because we are running the 40 HP motors. The problems we were experiencing with vibration and wear and tear to the impeller were eliminated immediately with the EZEFIT wheels, and we have only had to replace one motor in the last 12 months.” n

5 benefits of epoxy coatings This article highlights some of the major advantages of using concrete epoxy floor coatings and solutions

F

loors are an integral part of our day-today life which enhances productivity and safety. Concrete surfaces of floor are porous, hence vulnerable to water, abrasion and chemicals. An epoxy floor coating is made up of two parts: a resin and a hardener. When mixed together, these two components form a rigid, plastic-like substance and create a layer of protection when applied on concrete surface. Epoxy floor coating enhances aesthetics, hardens the surface and increases the durability of floor. The most important application for epoxies is flooring. They play a major role in meeting the standards required for high quality flooring. Especially in public buildings like hospitals or food processing plants, where hygienic floors are of the utmost importance epoxy coating can lengthen the life of the floor and achieve a great appearance. Epoxy flooring can be applied over

different materials including steel, concrete and wood. However, Hasan Rizvi, Vice President of STP Limited believes concrete is the best surface for laying epoxy floors. Here we dive into some of the major advantages of using concrete epoxy floor coatings and solutions: • Aesthetic appeal: Concrete epoxy floor coatings are beautiful and available in an array of colours and patterns to fit specific requirement. • Durable: Epoxy floor coatings are recognised as a tough and durable finish. Concrete floors coated with epoxy last longer and resist considerable wear. The coatings are also resistant to water and detergents therefore offer longer life. • Safe: Epoxy coatings are anti-skid therefore offer greater safety. They are also resistant to temperature and degradation caused by moisture, acids, impact etc.

• Versatile: Concrete epoxy floor coatings are versatile and found applications for residential areas, commercial spaces, workshops and industrial environments. • Low maintenance cost: A floor coated with epoxy coating will have no porous hence low retention of dust and dirt. It gives ease of cleaning hence maintenance cost is lower. Epoxy floor coatings are widely accepted in industries such as automobile industries, pharmaceutical industries, power plants, nuclear power plants, moulding industries, food industries etc. “Thousands of possible combinations of epoxy resins, curing agents and aggregates are available for use in epoxy flooring systems. Each combination offers a different balance of performance properties, so it is essential that the designer prioritise performance

Waterproofing

Book Review

To the successful waterproofing A guide to resolve Indian waterproofing issues

W

aterproofing is an important activity in the construction of a R.C.C. frame work building which is used for residential or commercial purposes. It remained neglected for long for various reasons like unavailability of quality products, information on sources of damages, actions of environment in depth, methods to control them, effects of faulty designs etc. Now the time has changed. Waterproofing is a universal problem and lot of research work is going on around the globe. New information, products and methods to use them are coming in every day. The field which was considered insignificant at one time has evoked tremendous interest. A thought at micro-level is evolving conceptual changes in the field. The products and methods of waterproofing like never before are available today and once believed impossible is now reachable at hands distance. Still the knowledge in the field is not fully disseminated and has not even reached to the professionals. Such book is a requirement of the time, but almost all of them come from foreign countries and do not become that much relevant to the Indian conditions. Lots of myths, misconceptions and wrong practices continue to prevail and these books do not provide solutions to such problems. The cost of these books is also a factor for the consideration. Hence the striking results are not seen. This fact deliberated to write a book “To the successful waterproofing”. The book is targeted mainly to the two sections of the society. One section is professionals like architects, engineers and contractors whereas the other section is the office bearers in the housing societies who are decision makers and members of the general public who are decision influencers. Information in the book in certain areas may seem absolutely of basic level, but it was inevitable to achieve the balance between the two ways of thinking. Unless the client is convinced the professional may not be in a position to execute his work in its totality however good it may appear to be. The main intention of the book is to remove some of the myths and wrong practices, to let know the concept of the waterproofing and not to be contented with old ideas but to invoke desire to know more things happening in the field. The book severely criticises the practice of “brick bat coba” method used in waterproofing. It states the said method is not a waterproofing system but does permanent damages to the structure whereby it cannot be brought back to its original status. It gives details of alternative methods which can meet the purpose and provide effective performance.

60

July 2015

The book discusses damaging effects of the installations of iron grills on windows and balcony openings. The unwanted load that it exerts on the structure and how it initiate its deterioration. Radiation from mobile towers and its damaging effect on human body is commonly discussed, but rarely anybody talks about damages caused by indiscriminately constructed such bodies on a structure. The book points out certain mistakes carried out in the erection process of these towers and provides suggestions to overcome the problems. The information given can be of great help to designers and planners to bring over useful changes on the drawing board itself. It will rectify many of the shortcomings in such installations and will keep the structure at distance from water leakages. Details on insurance cover available to the civil engineering industry is an important source of information for a budding contractor. His timely actions on the basis of given information will help him from many of the hardship that otherwise he may have to face. Maintenance of scaffolding, whether bamboo or steel, is one area which is taken for granted. Corrective measures taken in time can relieve a person from future troubles. Lot of such information which is otherwise difficult to get elsewhere so easily is at the disposal of reader. Many of the thoughts and ideas already exist within civil engineering fraternity in a dispersed form. The book places them in a concise and organised form, before the reader. It is forerunner of the changes for those will be entering in the industry in future. The book is hardbound with 124 black-and-white and 36 coloured printed pages with illustrations and sketches. It is also reasonably priced. Every possible hard work has undergone to bring it out in an exquisite way to make it an excellent copy to posses as a waterproofing reference book, for long. n

These solutions will help our customers to meet the growing demand for a faster construction process with M20-30 grade of concrete for both new and existing concrete structures.” Newly launched MasterPel 777 is an integral solution performing multiple roles of water proofer (IS2645) and water reducer (IS 9103) for everyday concrete. The contribution of this solution to faster construction is two-fold: As a water reducer, MasterPel 777 accelerates early strength development. Since it acts as a water proofer as well, the separate step of waterproofing can be saved. Also introduced MasterEmaco SBR 2 is a bonding agent with unique dispersion technology that enhances time and energy efficiency for general repairs, bonding coats and waterproofing. This technology coats and wets the cement particle more efficiently and hence enables faster hand mixing on-site either by mechanical means or by hand. MasterEmaco SBR ECO is a bonding agent and dispersant for screeds, repairs and waterproofing slurries with low volatile organic compound and no odour, which ensures good indoor air quality. “These qualities can support our customers to address the growing market demand for environmentally friendly and safe construction,” the company said. The new solutions will be available in India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. n July 2015

Environ Aerators with guaranteed performance

Environ aerators can reduce minimum 20 per cent to maximum 70 per cent of energy in any existing aeration system having the water depth of up to 6 metres.

J.C. Thakore, Managing Director, Environ Engineering Company In house oxygen transfer testing facility for aerators up to 150 hp ratings.

W

hile evaluating aeration systems, a total performance and cost of operation analysis is critical. The components of this analysis should include an evaluation of the initial capital cost of system installation, all operating and energy costs, and projected maintenance costs. Also an analysis of how well the systems perform the four basic functions required of all aerators should be included: • Provide sufficient oxygen transfer to promote biological treatment. • Provide sufficient mixing to ensure homogeneity of mixed liquor suspended solids and to prevent solids settling. • Respond to varying process conditions to maximise energy efficiency. • Provide reliable service, without costly maintenance and downtime, and without reduction in oxygen transfer capability. In any biological aeration system, apart from oxygen transfer, mixing

criteria is equally important and it is a must. In an aeration system having any type of effluent the outlet results cannot be achieved, if the mixing efficiency is missing, which many manufacturers and consultants fail to consider. Aeration systems, offered by Vadodara-based Environ Engineering Company, are precisely designed to deal with these shortcomings. Environ Engineering Company, having R&D since its inception, is continuously working to increase the oxygen transfer rate along with high mixing efficiency of mechanical aerators. It has developed an energy efficient aerator which can offer the results of up to 6 metres water depth with minimum energy consumption.

Unique features J.C. Thakore, Managing Director, Environ Engineering Company explained the unique features of Environ Aerators as follows:

• Fabricated and machined base frame for 5 HP to 15 HP and for 20 HP and above ratings heavy ISMB beam base is provided so vibrations are reduced. The base is machined on the top surface on heavy-duty lathe so the life of the gearbox is increased. • Cantilevered load reaction is passed through additional bearings and housing to bottom of the beam base and to RCC platform. So, gear is not at all affected by overhung load. Hence, life of the gearbox is increased. • Additional bearing support is provided to the aerator shaft so the unbalanced cantilevered loads are not passed to the output shaft of the gearbox. Those loads are taken by two extra bearings provided with housing. Thus the life of the gearbox is increased. Also the maintenance of the gearbox is also very easy. One needs to loose the four bolts of

Water

Expert Column

gearbox and six bolts of coupling to take out the gearbox. • Amply designed MS fully machined solid shaft to take care of heavy cantilevered, unbalanced and torsion loads, supported on two heavy-duty antifriction bearings housed in heavyduty cast iron bearing housing. Since, shaft is fully machined, no possibility of voubling of shaft concentric running of impeller is ensured. Also tubular shaft in aerators with helical gears are provided. • Impeller is designed as single shrouded pump impeller to achieve maximum oxygen transfer and mixing efficiency. Being a semiopen type impeller, it has got very valuable features of self cleaning. Hence practically zero maintenance is required for the impeller. Secondly, the impeller is machined at centre for its concentric running. Secondly, due to conical impeller and solid MS shaft, CG lies nearer to centre, so less impact loading.

• New generation of Environ energy efficient aerators having the unique feature of additional impeller at the bottom for efficient mixing at the floor level of aeration tank having tank water depth up to 6 metres. Due to which the oxygen transfer efficiency of the impeller is increased and hence with lesser HP more oxygen transfer is achieved. Secondly, less area is required due to water depth of 6 metres. Civil construction cost and the space required will be less hence economical. It avoids settlement of sludge at the floor level up to 6 metres water depth. • The life of this aerator is about 12 – 15 years. Environ Engineering guarantees life-long no variation of results in all the four corners of the aeration system due to efficient mixing. Also, maintenance is almost nil in this aerator.

How the aerator works Mr Thakore detailed the working of

Environ Energy Efficient Aerator as follows: • The top impeller has very high oxygen transfer capacity and the bottom impeller is provided for rigorous mixing. • With the provision of an additional impeller, vortex is created at the bottom which breaks the pressure of the effluent and do not allow the sludge to settle at the bottom floor level of the aeration tank. • Due to rigorous and thorough mixing, the solubility of oxygen is more. So, oxygen transfer efficiency is increased with less energy consumption.

Guaranteed performance “Environ aerators can reduce minimum 20 per cent to maximum 70 per cent of energy in any existing aeration system having the water depth of up to 6 metres,” informed Mr Thakore. n

The TIG pulse function of the new AccuPocket is of central importance to TIG welders, as this ensures reduced heat input, improved gap-bridging ability and a better weld seam appearance. This can also be used to achieve a weave pattern in the weld seam typical of TIG welding, in which the two components are to be joined without the use of filler metal (autogenous). With the TAC function, the customer can quickly and safely join the base material at the start of welding as well as during setting out and tacking. In addition, the AccuPocket TIG has an integrated gas solenoid valve, which guarantees an optimum gas shield in

the start and stop phase. Particular attention has also been paid to the newly developed welding torch for this mobile TIG welding innovation. It has a TIG Multi Connector and a built-in UpDown switch that reduces the main current during the welding process. This regulates the heat input and considerably reduces the risk of burnthrough.
