I have to confess my tree was up far before Thanksgiving even rolled around this year. And for good reason— we’ve been putting together this fab little holiday issue and everything seemed so magical! We love celebrating our birthday with the holiday edition of Mini and I’ll say it, this just might be the best yet. Including an inside look at the busy day-to-day lives and holiday traditions of parents like Ivanka Trump, Kelly Oxford, Aden + Anais founder Raegan Moya-Jones, Aliza Licht and many more, this issue will be your new BFF during that muchdeserved holiday break. And that gorgeous cover? That would be the lovely Tia Mowry-Hardrict of Nick at Nite’s newest hit series, Instant Mom. Tia is gracing the Mini pages this holiday issue to share her holiday plans with family, tips for being one hot mama, and how she’s learned to juggle as a working mom. It’s the holiday season, so dive right in! Grab yourself some cookies and milk and maybe even the Elf on the Shelf. SWEET AS SUGAR INTERVIEW BY KAITLYN KIRBY PHOTO BY JENNIFER GREGORI

Two moms— also close friends and graphic designers— joined creative forces to bring the world a stationery and paper goods destination with a sweet style. MINI: What inspired you to create Sugar

Paper?

CHELSEA SHUKOV: Sugar Paper began in

28

M I N I h o l i d a y ‘13

2003 with a love of letterpress and an appreciation for simple, tasteful, design. Jamie and I both have an appreciation for fine stationery, but at the time we felt that there was a whole in the market for simple, understated design. The high- end options seemed stuffy and outdated. We started Sugar Paper to create a line that combined the finest materials with classic typefaces yet had a younger feel. MINI: How would you describe the brand’s overall aesthetic? CS: Sugar Paper is timeless, classic and tasteful with a playful edge. It’s traditional social stationery with an updated feel. MINI: Talk to us about your workspace. How is the space decorated and what keeps you motivated in-office? CS: We love the open feel of the studio in general. Our studio is a warehouse with terrific windows and high ceilings. The

lighting is amazing. The design of the space feels very much like the products we create. Shannon Wollack and Brittany Zwickl are friends of ours who run an interior design firm and agreed to help us bring the Sugar Paper brand to life throughout the space. They consulted with us on how to create a space that was both functional, but also helped “tell the story” of the brand. The colors and patterns throughout the space speak to our design aesthetic—the gold dot wallpaper in our office, the pale pink walls, the bright white bricks. It’s all very Sugar Paper. MINI: You’re both moms— how do you manage such a bustling company with motherhood? CS: The balance is the trickiest part, but having a business partner in the same stage of life is hugely helpful. We got lucky because our partnership truly works. We are fiercely loyal to each other because we both feel that having a partner allows us to have a multi-faceted life. MINI: How have your careers shifted to accommodate motherhood? CS: We’re much more efficient when we’re at work. We used to stay at work late most nights. Now we’re at home at 6 sharp. MINI: You now have a line for J.Crew that’s launching in late December! Tell us all about it. CS: The collection was designed with the J.Crew bride in mind, using their Spring 2014 color palette. We worked to create

beautifully crafted products that incorporate our love of design and high quality materials. We combined pale grey and soft pink and added a touch of gold. It’s sophisticated while still being youthful and fun. The design is tailored for the feminine, sophisticated bride. The collection will be sold online only. ■

HOLIDAY TIPS x SUGAR PAPEr • Order custom cards early! “The key is to shoot your family photo in September. We always work backward from the photo. The photo helps dictate the design.” • Wrap simple packages! Stick to great wrap, high quality ribbon, and some sort of topper. “Simple kraft wrap with a crisp white bow and a sprig of boxwood is easy to accomplish and super stylish.” • Calendars are great gifts! “Our calendars are always popular. Once you have one on your desk you can’t go back.”

MINI SAYS

MEET THE FOUNDER

Aden + Anais founder Raegan Moya-Jones lives in Brooklyn with her four girls— Anais, Lourdes, Arin, and Amelie Rose.

MOTHER OF ALL S WA D D L E S Founder and CEO of everyone’s favorite swaddle brand, Aden + Anais, Raegan Moya-Jones gives Mini the in’s and out’s of keeping baby cozy. INTERVIEW BY LAUREN KENDALL PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF ADEN + ANAIS

32

When you think swaddles, you think Aden + Anais. The brand is infamous for creating versatile products, like their swaddle blankets, that double as stroller covers, tummy time blankets, nursing covers, burp cloths and more. And with a peek into the life of their busy founder, you’ll only come to love them more!

M I N I h o l i d a y ‘13

MINI: Mini loves aden + anais. Tell us more

how you came up with the idea. RAEGAN MOYA-JONES: In 2003, I moved from my native Australia to the United States. That’s when I received the news that I was expecting my first daughter, Anais. After scouring store after store, I was shocked when I couldn’t find the muslin swaddle blankets that I knew and loved from back home. Every blanket was either too heavy, too small or just not right. Before I could stop myself, I was taking a page from Plato’s Republic—inventing by way of necessity. So, in collaboration with my then partner, I decided to start manufacturing the blankets myself and aden + anais was born. MINI: How did you decide on the name aden + anais? RMj: When I started the company with my partner at the time, we had each just had our first child. Her son’s name is Aden and my oldest daughter is named Anais. It seemed like a natural fit. MINI: Tell us more about swaddling. What are the benefits of swaddling infants? RMj: It is believed that swaddling emulates being in the womb. So, when you wrap an infant in a swaddle, it’s nice and snug and secure— making them feel comfortable and soothed. In 2002, the medical journal, Pediatrics, published a study that explained why babies who are swaddled sleep more peacefully by preventing spontaneous movements (called moro reflex) from waking them up continually during the night. The same year, the Journal of

Applied Physiology wrote that swaddled infants stay in REM sleep (the most restorative, deepest sleep) longer than those who were not. Basically, swaddled infants sleep longer and more soundly which in turn helps the entire household. MINI: Before the invention of aden + anais swaddling blankets, what were women in the United States using? RMj: I can’t speak for all mums in the U.S., but I know that back in 2003 when I started looking for muslin swaddles, all I could find were “receiving blankets.” The blankets that I found were mostly too small and not the right fabric for swaddling. Most of them were either fleece, flannel or synthetic. MINI: Tell us about the Swaddle Love Foundation you founded. RMj: In 2008, my husband and I were discussing the possibility of adopting a child. While performing an extensive amount of research on the process, I discovered that most orphanages in underdeveloped countries were overcrowded and understaffed. Orphaned babies become conditioned not to cry, even when left alone for 20 hours a day, simply because they know no one is coming. After learning about

GET THE LOOK Set of Classic Swaddles $49.95/4; adenandanais.com

this and having been made aware of a condition called touch deprivation (whilst writing my book swaddle love), I was compelled to action; I simply couldn’t sit by and do nothing to help, so I set up the Swaddle Love Foundation. The mission of the foundation is to eliminate touch deprivation in orphaned babies around the word. MINI: What other products does aden + anais offer parents? RMJ: Muslin swaddles are the foundation of the brand, but we now have everything from nursery collections and skin and laundry care, to an electronic sleep system and we’re constantly releasing new products. As a mum of four girls, it’s important to me that our products are versatile and have multiple uses. You’ll notice that is a theme for aden + anais. As my girls grow older, I find new products and categories to create so I can use them with my own family. MINI: How do you conceive your designs, choose fabrics, and pick colors for the season? RMJ: We really primarily only work with muslin, so that is my fabric of choice. I draw inspiration for designs and colors constantly from my everyday life. If I see something in nature, in art, in books, I make a note of it and let our design team know that this is something that I think would work for our line.

34

M I N I h o l i d a y ‘13

MINI: You’re the mother of four daughters.

Have they inspired any of your products? RMJ: They are the inspiration behind pretty much everything I do. And yes, they are very much the inspiration behind all our aden + anais products. If I want something for my girls I manufacture it under the aden + anais brand. MINI: How do you describe your parenting style? How has it changed after each child? RMJ: Organized chaos. After each baby it just became more organized and more chaotic.

INSIDER

MINI: What is the greatest challenge of

motherhood? How do you think you’re handling it? RMJ: For me it’s time, or more to the point, the lack of it. I am in a constant state of guilt as a working mother— it is mainly about whether or not I am giving the girls enough attention. I have a very demanding job so I am in a constant state of compromise, just like all other working mums I suspect. I have made peace with the fact that there is only one of me and all I can do is my best.

SCOOP

MINI: Other than swaddling, do you have

any more Australian traditions in your home? RMJ: Pawpaw ointment is a staple, which was the inspiration behind our mum + bub skin care line. And, Vegemite. I personally can’t stand the stuff, but my husband and four daughters love it. MINI: What is your parenting motto? RMJ: To never, ever, ever forget to remind our girls to say please and thank you and to be respectful of those around them. ■

aDEN+ANAIS SWADDLE 101 •

Lay the swaddle in a diamond shape and fold the top corner down to form a triangle. Place baby in the center of the folded area with their head just above the fold of the swaddle.

Place baby’s right arm slightly bent at the elbow flat against their body. Take the left side of the swaddle and bring it across your baby’s chest. Tuck the edge of the swaddle under their body for a secure swaddle.

Fold the bottom of the swaddle up and over baby’s feet.

Finally, place baby’s left arm slightly bent at the elbow against their body, take the right side of the swaddle and bring it across baby’s chest.

What began as a mere position in a baby superstore ultimately blossomed into a full-fledged career and earned Jamie Grayson the title of Baby Gear Expert in the parenting industry. INTERVIEW BY KAITLYN KIRBY PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF JAMIE GRAYSON

Currently the only male baby planner in the world, Jamie Grayson ironically has no kids of his own. And yet Grayson has paved his own way in the parenting industry, becoming a go-to guru for baby gear of all kinds— which inquiring parents can now also follow in his detailed, new Ulive web series, Jamie Grayson’s Baby Gear Guide. On any given day, you can expect to find Manhattan’s own Baby Guy reviewing everything from strollers to baby carriers, educating parents around the country, and playing the role of uncle to his beloved nieces and nephew. MINI: Happy holidays! If you could choose three

must-have products for new parents to receive this holiday season, what would they be? JAMIE GRAYSON: Happy Holidays! 3 Must-Have Products, eh? Sleep. Wine. More sleep. Holidays wear everyone out, so sleep is important. MINI: Talk to us about how you got your start in the baby industry. JG: In 2005 I left a national tour and was hired at buybuyBaby in Manhattan as a product demonstrator. I began with the Bugaboo Frog and became bored so I learned everything I could on my own. I began doing mass stroller demonstrations all weekend, and then began doing registries. I’d be booked three to four

months in advance and strangers would find my private Facebook page and ask me questions about products— that is when I knew something was going on. I left after about four and a half years and began work at a birth education center. After [one] year there, I gave my notice—they were closing— and the day after, I was in New York Magazine’s annual “BestOf ” issue as the Best Baby Gear Guru in NYC. INSANE TIMING. MINI: Once you emerged onto the baby scene, what were you most interested to find? JG: [The] lack of retail training. I am still shocked at what I hear come out of the mouths of some retail employees when I travel. Luckily, most of my events are at specialty stores where they really take great care in training, but at big box stores... yikes. I could, and probably will, write a book. MINI: We know in the realm of baby gear, there are many misconceptions. What would you say is the biggest? JG: Don’t fall into the “My friends all have it” trap. What your friends use is a great place to start, but take their lifestyle versus yours into account. MINI: What do you love most about your job? JG: [This year] I spoke to nearly 5,000 people

total and I love meeting people. MINI: As the go-to expert in the baby gear field, tell us what is important to keep in mind when shopping for baby gear. JG: SUPPORT LOCAL RETAIL. They train employees better and you will get better support from stores when you support local or specialty retail. Amazon certainly doesn’t have Child Passenger Safety Technicians on staff to help you test car seats. You don’t deliver your baby online, why would you buy all your baby things that way? Go play with things! Also keep your lifestyle and budget at the forefront. There are a few categories where investing really is worth it. MINI: We adore following your role as Uncle Jamie on social media! How were you able to help your sister with all things baby when the time came? JG: I’m obsessed with my family. Companies were, and are, incredibly generous with her and us. Aside from gear, I had top experts in their fields in my phone and email, so if Jennifer had questions, I had access to crazy resources. Resources I still go to when I have questions people bring up on Facebook. MINI: You must love being an uncle! What are your favorite aspects of being involved with your nieces and nephew? JG: Love isn’t strong enough. Those kids are my heart. When their little arms hug me, or they dogpile on me, or we sit and watch movies... there’s nothing better. I love them so much I am worried my heart might explode when I have kids of my own. MINI: You’ve been busy lately! Talk to us about your new series on Ulive.

38

M I N I h o l i d a y ‘13

JG: Scripps found me in the Fall of last year—

on Instagram—they [were] launching a lot of parenting and healthy-living content. They had been monitoring me for a bit and studying how I operated... and they liked me. So I said “yes.” MINI: What would you say is the most rewarding part of your job? Does any one moment stand out from your career thus far? JG: As my social media following goes up (hopefully it continues) and I travel all over the country again next year with events every month, I feel very fortunate that I can educate people on safety and products in an entertaining way. I recently spoke at an event in NYC and after I walked a mom through how to use her car seat; she realized she’d been doing it wrong. That is what is rewarding. If one person feels more confident in what they are doing, all the travel and crazy hours I keep are worth it. MINI: SO much baby gear will be purchased this holiday season. What do you want people to know? JG: Don’t use buntings in car seats. You can’t get the harnesses tight enough. NOTHING goes between your kid’s back and the car seat. Find other options, and there are PLENTY, to keep your kid warm in their car seat. MINI: When it comes to new parents, they love to be informed. What must they learn how to do? JG: Learn how to use your car seat and stroller before the baby is born— it will ease your mind. Also, get the number of a great IBCLC and have it on-hand at all times. It will help with your breastfeeding success and we all want that. ■

You’ve seen her avatar on Twitter, you’ve followed her Tumblr, and you live for her Show Requests. We have all come to love the sassy dialogue of DKNYPRGIRL and now, Mini chats with the powerhouse (and mom of two!) behind it all— Aliza Licht. INTERVIEW BY KAITLYN KIRBY PHOTOS COURTESY OF ALIZA LICHT

MINI: Talk to us about your popular pres-

ence as DKNY PR Girl. When did you first step on the social media scene? ALIZA LICHT: Time flies when you’re tweeting all day! I started @dkny in May 2009. MINI: What do you love most about your job? AL: How creative it is. You can literally come up with something and run with it. Obviously, budget permitting! MINI: We adore your hilarious blog staple— Show Requests. What was one of the oddest/funniest show requests you’ve ever received? AL: I would say that all the #ShowRequests over the years amaze me every time. I’ve had CEO’s of dry cleaning companies ask me to trade front row seats for 20% off my next dry cleaning purchase. I’ve had buyers of competitive designers requesting seats—

46

I mean, really? Are you buying the collection? I seriously don’t know what these people are thinking. MINI: What some may not know is that you’re also a mom— which you detail on your personal Twitter @alizalicht. How do you juggle such a demanding job in PR with motherhood? AL: I don’t think that everything needs your attention 100% of the time. When I’m at work, I’m 100% focused on work, when I’m home, I’m 100% focused on family. I will pick up work again once the kids have gone to bed. Of course though, if they bust out their iPads, I’m certainly going to bust out my laptop too! They understand that I have a career and I think working hard is a great example to set for them. I am also a Parent Association president at school. I want them to see me involved in their

education. You know what they say, the busier you are, the more you get done. MINI: What do you see as the benefits of having the best of both worlds? Being a mom and a dedicated career woman at the same time? AL: Well, for one thing, I’m never bored! I think it’s important to keep growing in life and for me, that means new challenges. If you’re never uncomfortable, then you’re not pushing yourself. And if you’re not pushing yourself, you will never know where you could have gone. MINI: You always manage to look fabulous. What are your keys to looking great on little time? AL: Not always, but when I walk outside I am very conscious of how I look. My mother taught me that if you go outside looking like crap, you are destined to run into someone you don’t want to see. I have learned that never fails! I’m not going to lie though, I have a distinct advantage— I was born with hair and makeup skills, so I can literally get ready in twenty minutes if my hair is done. If it’s not, I can definitely get ready in forty-five.

MINI: Are your kids into fashion as much as

you are? Where have you seen yourself rub off on them? AL: They are into fashion, but not to an extreme extent. I don’t want them obsessed with labels and what they are wearing, so I teach them how to dress for the specific occasion, but generally let them style themselves. If it doesn’t match, I couldn’t care less. I want them to feel like fashion is empowering— whatever makes them feel good is fine with me. But it must be weather appropriate! MINI: We love following the funny things your kids say via Twitter. What was the funniest thing they’ve said recently? AL: Me to 8-year-old: “Do you like Miley’s song “We Can’t Stop”?” 8-year-old: “Yes, did she write that before she started sticking her tongue out?” Me to 8-year-old: “It’s report card time!” 5-year-old to me: “This is the best day of my life (evil grin).” MINI: What would you say surprised you most about parenting? AL: How much time and dedication it takes to teach your kids how to be good people. That’s a parent’s job, not the school’s. If you don’t teach them, they don’t know it. Too many people rely on others to teach their kids the essentials in life. You have to spend the time and really invest in your kids if you want them to turn out well. It’s much, much more than just being home for dinner. ■

DESIGN FOR MINIKIND Maven of the web, Erin Loechner is a gal after our own Mini hearts. M I N I h o l i d a y ‘13

MINI: Happy Holidays! We’re so excited to feature you

in Mini’s holiday issue. Let’s start by talking about your blogs, Design for Mankind and Design for Minikind. How did you begin your career as a blogger? ERIN LOECHNER: Thanks for having me! I really feel like I just fell into this career of sorts, so it certainly wasn’t an intentional profession for me— more like a creative evolution? I started blogging in 2001 when it was still called an “online journal” or “web logging,” so it had kind of always been an outlet for my young adult life— a space to catalog my thoughts and process my days. I’m much more private now, but back then when it was just me, my computer and a handful of friends, any topic was game! I launched Design for Mankind when I was thrown into a position as an Art Director at the ad agency I worked at in Los Angeles and was feeling completely over my head. This was in 2006— pre-Pinterest— so I needed a virtual space to store ideas, inspiration and graphics that I could communicate to our clients. Eventually, it became a mix of visual inspiration and personal thoughts, and when I shared my bedroom makeover in our L.A. home in 2007, the site went viral thanks to Design*Sponge, Apartment Therapy and Decor8. I’ve been writing about design in some form ever since and really feel so blessed to be able to combine all of my passions for styling, writing, collecting inspiration, producing projects and coordinating photo shoots all in a day’s work. MINI: Tell us about the inspiration behind your blogs and what can Mini readers find on each one? EL: Both are really just playgrounds for my creative energy, really. Design for Mankind is focused on embracing simple pleasures, learning from my fellow creatives and sharing the inspiration that comes from my love for visuals. I love uncovering

interesting products or creatives doing really out-of-the-box things, as they always cause me to pause and reflect on the life I’m living myself. Other than that, I’ll sometimes share personal thoughts and stories— it’s really a landing pad for so many different things, which is the beauty of a blog, yes? Design for Minikind is much the same, but is a space that I share more kidfocused inspirations. I also write near-weekly letters to my daughter, Bee. MINI: We love following your little one, Bee, on your various platforms. How has your life changed since motherhood? Wish you’d known anything beforehand? EL: Ah, thank you! I think the biggest change in my life is that weighty feeling you get when you realize how precious time is. You have to strive to be that much more intentional with your time— both in the free time you’re rarely given, but also the time you’re spending with your baby/children. It’s an incredibly jarring feeling and I have to continually remind myself not to overthink it— to just enjoy a string of moments in my days that will eventually add up to a life well lived. And yes, I wished I’d known how to do more things one-handed! When you gain a child, you lose a hand. MINI: Being a working mom is definitely chaotic! Tell us how you learned to juggle both roles. What is the key to finding the “perfect” balance? EL: This is a continual process for me and I’m constantly reevaluating depending on my workload and also Bee’s life stages. For now, what works for me is to wake up at 5 AM to work until noon(ish) and then spend the rest of my afternoon/evening with Bee. It makes for a pretty long day and I’m often falling asleep on my dinner plate, but it’s the only way I feel like

52

M I N I h o l i d a y ‘13

I can fit it all in while respecting both my work and my time with Bee, as well as my husband’s schedule. We’re both freelancers, so we’re really lucky to have that flexibility! MINI: Introduce us to Clementine Daily. What inspired you to create this new outlet? EL: I felt the itch last fall, shortly after the birth of my daughter— the push to think more deeply about what I wanted from life. What life wanted from me. There’s just something about change, isn’t there? Whether it arrives swaddled in baby blankets, job promotions or cross-country moves, change propels us to dream beyond ourselves. To turn question marks into statements, complete with a period that forms a new dot on the map entirely— a starting point to a different perspective. Clementine Daily is the period on my page. It began as a search for a women’s

lifestyle site that included all of my aesthetic passions: style, beauty, home design, food— but also the deeper, more meaningful ones: wellness, etiquette, advice, inspiration. I wanted all of it, a site that offered grace and acceptance between boyfriend jeans and beauty balms— a quick pasta recipe seasoned with reassurance and self-respect. I wanted authenticity and reality, not airbrushed and glossy. I wanted inspiration, not aspiration. And I quickly realized that I wasn’t alone. We’re growing tired, aren’t we? Pinterest overload, immaculate parties, confetti in our shoes. Celebrations are fun, but somewhere along the way, we lost the everyday. The glitz and glitter has overshadowed the simplest of pleasures: clean sheets, morning light, hot tea. MINI: What would your advice be to those Mini parents who want to start a blog of their own? EL: I think it’s important to think really hard about the level of privacy you desire for you and your family. What’s their comfort level? What’s your own? And how much time are you willing to spend on the not-so-glamorous parts of blogging, like emails and schedules and deadlines and edits and photos? I’ll admit— it’s a bigger job than I realized it could be, so I’m always looking for ways to streamline and simplify. The wonderful thing is that you can make it anything you’d like, so choose wisely and passionately. MINI: Now that it’s the holiday season, do you and your family have any holiday traditions? EL: I have a feeling we’ll be starting some now that Bee’s getting older (she’s 1 1/2). I can’t wait to see what’s in store for our family over the years and have visions of visiting nursing homes and caroling and crafting. For now, my husband is a big fan of Christmas movies, so I anticipate a few flicks by the fire! ■

You can also turn up the volume by serving a signature cocktail to your guests. “Ours is homemade egg nog with plenty of bourbon!”

Decor Make your home feel extra cozy this holiday season by burning a signature candle and displaying the kids’ holiday projects. “Ours is Cire Trudon Balmoral as it reminds me of the forest where our tree came from,” shared Chen. “[Holiday projects] breathe a little life into your perfectly decorated tree and mantle.”

glamorous wardrobe when I got pregnant, and I was totally uninspired by the selection of maternity wear out there. I figured that unless I was crazy, there was a huge opportunity for a maternity brand for women who want stylish, well-made investment pieces and who refuse to compromise sartorially when pregnant. MINI: What sets the brand apart from the rest of the maternity industry? SM: We joke that all of our clothes have to pass the “10-foot-pole test.” Would we touch them with a 10-foot-pole if not pregnant? If not, then they’re not good enough for our maternity line! We don’t believe that pregnant women should be denied that heady sense of love-at-first-sight that we have all experienced when clothes shopping, so we hunt down gorgeous trims, prints and fabrics and spend a lot of time making them workable for pregnancy. MINI: Which piece do you think is a staple that every mom should own this holiday season? SM: The gold-trimmed Camilla shift dress, which is understated but incredibly chic and

will see you through every social occasion. And then there’s our Saturday dress which is made of super-thick premium micromodal and I swear is even more comfortable than your pyjamas while being a lot more stylish! MINI: How would you style a particular Madderson London piece for the holidays? SM: Our recommendation would be, “Don’t be afraid of standing out if you’re pregnant this holiday season!” Our LBD’s have been created to wow. I’d style the Amelie babydoll dress with smokey eyes and a voluminous blow-out à la Bardot, some great sparkly jewelry and the highest heels that you can bear. MINI: What motivates you to move the brand forward? Your keys to success in this space? SM: We really believe in creating maternity clothes that are just as chic and lust-worthy as the clothes available to non-pregnant women. We are also launching womenswear for Spring/Summer ‘14 and that move has largely been driven by the amazing reception we’ve had from customers asking us for a ready-to-wear line. Being able to design two lines for the same woman, whatever her stage in life, is extremely exciting. There will be a strong aesthetic link between the two lines with influences from womenswear carrying over to maternity wear and vice versa. Take our Amelie dress in the SS/14 maternity collection— the dress is trimmed with an incredible French tweed that features heavily in our SS/14 womenswear collection. We just don’t believe that the pregnant ladies should miss out on something that gorgeous! ■

MINI: What are your favorite activities to do with your son? RB: On Sunday mornings, I take him to the farmer’s market near our house. We get popcorn and there are usually pony rides which Skyler loves. It’s our father/son bonding time. MINI: What has surprised you most about parenting? What do you think no one really prepares you for? RB: Everyone tells you that your life as you know it will be over when you become a parent and I found that only part of that

is true. Rachel and I still see our friends, travel and have an active and fun social life, but now it’s just the type of activity that’s changed. We go to our friends’ kids’ birthday parties and, surprisingly, have just as much fun watching our kids play together. When Skyler is happy, we’re happy. MINI: Now that you’re about to be a dad of two, how are your preparing yourself and your home? RB: We’re moving into a larger home so we can have more space and I’m getting as much work in as possible so I can take some down time when the baby comes. MINI: Describe your style— what can we catch you wearing these days? RB: My style is pretty classic overall— jeans, boots and button-down shirts, but I tend to accessorize a lot which gives me a little edge. MINI: How would you describe Skyler’s style? If you had it your way, what would he be wearing? RB: He would be wearing the rock and roll tshirts that I bought for him! He has Grateful Dead, Nirvana and Rolling Stones shirts, but Rachel won’t let him wear them. ■

D I VA LY S S C I O U S Manhattan mom Lyss Stern had a blast before kids and that didn’t stop when she began changing diapers instead of Louboutins— a philosophy she’s sharing with her premier network of New York City’s Divalysscious Moms. INTERVIEW BY KAITLYN KIRBY STORY BY LEXI MCCAMMOND PHOTOS COURTESY OF LYSS STERN

Lyss Stern is a stylish New Yorker who starts her day in Lululemon attire as she’s racing to drop the kids off at school. In the evening, as she prepares for a night out, Stern can typically be found in a classic black ensemble with an eye-catching pop of color (usually pink). So for an independent woman like Lyss, what’s more inspiring to change your career path than witnessing a group of adult-sized temper tantrums and screaming battles amongst your coworkers? For Stern, that is enough to trade her cushy entertainment PR job for Divalysccious Moms, an entrepreneurial lifestyle dedicated to chic moms. “I have always had a hard time resisting a pun where my name is con-

Collaborating with greats like Dolce and Gabbana and Dylan’s Candy Bar, Divalysscious Moms celebrates the active, stylish mom with luxurious events in NYC. Stern recalls her pre-motherhood life as “vibrant, creative, busy and independent,” which she recognizes many women lose after becoming mothers. For Stern, to love your child does not mean you must lose yourself. A DivaMom should feel her happiest, sexiest and most confident once she becomes a mom: three things the Divalysscious Moms events remind women to embody in everyday life. Through a community of driven women and an array of amazing events, Divalysscious Moms combines the joys of motherhood with the vibrant and exciting life many women have before the birth of their precious babes. Lyss Stern proves that maintaining sophistication and independence after becoming a mom is not only feasible, but will also make any Diva Mom better at her multifaceted roles. your role on the Real Housewives of Orange County. What has been your favorite part of being on the show? HEATHER DUBROW: I would have to say some of the fun moments with my kids. Collette crawled for the first on camera! Best home video ever.

M I N I h o l i d a y ‘13

MINI: Who have you connected with most on the

show? HD: Tamra and I have become very close friends. I was honored to be a bridesmaid in her wedding last June.

MINI: Aside from the RHOC, you’ve had

other acting roles. How have you taken to reality TV compared to scripted roles? Has it been more difficult? HD: Reality is definitely more difficult! It’s hard to be accountable for everything that comes out of your mouth. We all say things we regret or sometimes things done come out the right way. I would always prefer having a script! MINI: You’re a busy mom of four children. Give us a glimpse of your rare “me time.” How do you spend the coveted down time? HD: Haha. I will let you know when that happens! MINI: Organization is key to managing a busy family. What three items do you have with you at all times? HD: I am hyper organized. It makes me feel sane and in control. I always have my cell phone, credit card and a lip gloss. MINI: Your son is the oldest of the four and the only boy— how does his style and personality compare to your other children? Would you say he’s more like you or your husband? HD: My son is definitely a mixture of both Terry and myself. I think Nicholas will be a very good husband because he’s so good with the girls. His style is cool— jeans and a leather jacket are his weekend staples. MINI: We can only imagine your daughters’ sense of style with such a chic mom. Do they try to emulate your style? What can we find them wearing most often? HD: The girls are all so different! Max, 10,

is a bit edgy. She likes an off beat look. Katarina likes classic lines and dresses. Collette loves super heroes and can often be seen in a batman shirt with a tutu and side pony. MINI: With the holidays just around the corner, what traditions are you looking forward to with your family? HD: We will be in NY visiting my family for Thanksgiving/Chanukkah. Christmas this year we will be doing a “staycation.” Some day trips to the snow and other fun things. MINI: What ensembles do you have planned for holiday parties? Do you have favorite patterns, prints, colors you bring out this time of year? HD: Lets be honest, I wear a lot of black! However, this year I’m really enjoying all of the burgundy and plaids around. MINI: How do you typically deck the halls or decorate for the holidays? HD: When we get back from New York, we will set up our menorah and dreidles for Channukah and go shopping for a Christmas tree as well. We celebrate everything! ■

INTERVIEW BY KAITLYN KIRBY PHOTOS COURTESY OF IVANKA TRUMP

MINI: Happy Holidays! Let’s get started

talking about the Ivanka Trump collections. What was your inspiration for designing the apparel line? IVANKA TRUMP: After noticing an absence in the marketplace for a brand catering to the confident, career-oriented woman, I created the Ivanka Trump brand giving women clothing and accessories that can take her from the boardroom to a night out. The brand is seeking to redefine wear to work for the young professional, offering feminine, sophisticated styles with a youthful edge. The collections echo my personal aesthetic of polished elegance coupled with a youthful approach and resonates with today’s modern woman who works in multiple capacities— as a businesswoman, entrepreneur, girlfriend, wife and mother. MINI: What are some of your favorite pieces in the collection and what do you often pair them with? IT: The asymmetrical peplum sheath dress is a great piece. I pair it with a blazer and pumps at the office and a strappy sandal and statement earrings for a night out. The cut is really flattering and the bold red color is great. MINI: Now that it’s the holiday season, what are your favorite ways to spend the season? IT: Our family spends the holidays at Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach. It’s such a beautiful place and we grew up there. It’s wonderful to be able to bring our own families now and all spend time together. MINI: What are your favorite ensembles, colors, patterns, or pieces you love to

bring out of your wardrobe during the holiday season? IT: I love to pair the gold metallic Ivanka clutch with everything from a chic dress, to a pair of tailored pants and a tuxedo jacket. It’s the perfect accessory for the holiday season. MINI: You’re now a mom to little Arabella and Joseph! Has your style changed at all since motherhood? What were your style staples during your pregnancy? IT: During my first pregnancy I relied on a few staple pieces like a black wrap dress, which I never wanted to see again after

I gave birth! This time around, I tried to have a little more fun. I wore a lot of blazers. They provided some structure and were more flattering on my figure than wearing loose blouses every day. I paired them with skirts, pants and the Ivanka Trump Mina Bootie. MINI: We’re certain Arabella will grow up to be a fashionista just like you! What do you

70

M I N I h o l i d a y ‘13

dress her in most often now? IT: I’m a big fan of the Zara Kids line. It offers affordable options that are always on trend and appropriate. Crew Cuts also has great clothes. MINI: How is life different now with two children? IT: We are back to the beginning and it’s chaotic! We are so fortunate and I love that

Arabella has a sibling now. She is such a great big sister. MINI: We all know moms have little time to work with in their busy schedules. What are your tips for looking great on little time? IT: Accessories. Making an outfit transitional is all about having the right accents, whether it’s beautiful statement jewelry, a Arabella has a sibling now. She is such a great big sister. MINI: We all know moms have little time to work with in their busy schedules. What are your tips for looking great on little time? IT: Accessories. Making an outfit transitional is all about having the right accents, whether it’s beautiful statement jewelry, a scarf or great shoes. MINI: How do you balance career and motherhood? What do you think are the keys to keeping the balance? IT: Don’t stress about balance. It’s almost impossible to achieve so I just try to be present whether I’m at home or at the office and get the most out of each moment. MINI: What are your favorite ensembles, colors, patterns, or pieces you love to bring out of your wardrobe during the holiday season? IT: I love to pair the gold metallic Ivanka clutch with everything from a chic dress, to a pair of tailored pants and a tuxedo jacket. It’s the perfect bag for the holiday season. MINI: How would you define your parenting style? What’s most important to you in raising your children? IT: Time and consistency are crucial, both as a parent and as a partner. My family is my priority, but I love what I do professionally. Balancing the two is a work in progress, but I think, so far, I am doing OK. ■ M I N I ’ S H O L I D AY P I C K S Ivanka Trump Metropolis Octagonal Studs; $1450; ivankatrumpcollection.com

HUSTLE Tia Mowry-Hardrict gives Mini the recipe for her busy, successful life as mom to son Cree, and the lead actress of the hit new parenting comedy on Nick at Nite, Instant Mom— including what it means to be one “hot mama,” post baby.

MINI: We’re so excited to have you as our holi-

day cover mom! What are you most looking forward to this holiday season? TIA MOWRY-HARDRICT: I’m most looking forward to going on a nice vacation with my family—somewhere snowy. Traditionally, for the holidays (Thanksgiving specifically), a big family dinner happens and the hosts

rotate. This year is my sisters turn, so well all be traveling to Napa and feasting at her house. MINI: And despite the holiday hustle and bustle, you have a lot going on yourself! Talk to us about your new show, Instant Mom. TMH: Working on Instant Mom has been wonderful so far. The cast is a joy and our producers are fabulous. Even with all the hustle and bustle of the holidays, the work is something I look forward to; I’m especially enjoying getting to play a mom for the first time. MINI: How is your fun, motherly role on the show different from your parenting your own son? Do you share a lot of similarities with your character? TMH: The only major difference is that she’s step-mother to older children and I find that this is the one role I’ve had that’s the closest to who I am in real life. She may be a mom, but she hasn’t lost any of the traits that make her who she is, beyond motherhood. She’s fun, fashionable and sassy— which are qualities I like to think I still possess! MINI: What is important to you in parenting? What traits do you hope to instill or lessons do you hope to teach your son, Cree? TMH: Making sure you pay attention to your child’s happiness, needs, [their] strengths and weaknesses and what’s really important is providing unconditional love. A child learns how to love others when he knows and receives love themselves, and

74

M I N I h o l i d a y ‘13

that is very important to me. These are the things that I hope and try to instill in Cree. MINI: You also wrote a book— Oh Baby! Pregnancy Tales and Advice from One Hot Mama to Another. What inspired you to write the book? TMH: Most of the pregnancy books that I found were medically driven and focused on the “scary” parts of pregnancy. What I wanted and what I feel so many other expectant mothers crave was a personable, humorous, tell-it-like-it-is approach. MINI: What does it mean to you to be a hot mama? TMH: A hot mama to me is a mom who doesn’t lose herself or her identity just because she’s become a mom. She’s an amazing mom and also a woman who hasn’t forgotten about herself, what she wants, and who she was before having a child. So many women possess a plethora of different qualities and wear many hats in their day to day lives— they are mothers, sisters, best friends, daughters and wives (to name a few) and I think it’s important to remember that. MINI: How do you manage to look great and stay chic with a working mommy schedule? TMH: Eating healthy, drinking lots of water, and sticking to a workout program that I enjoy are all crucial to my keeping it together. MINI: What surprised you most about parenting? What do you think is one thing no one really prepares you for?

how worried you become. I’m constantly worrying about my sons well being. I was a worrier before, and now that I have Cree it’s only gotten worse! It’s something I need to work on, however I hear it never really goes away. MINI: How would you describe Cree’s style? TMH: Cree is a very cool kid. I like to dress him like his dad who loves camouflage pants and cool boots and beanies. MINI: How would you describe your own style? What is your mommy uniform? TMH: I feel like I’ve become more daring with my wardrobe choices since becoming a mom. I’m not afraid to try new things— I love a good high heel and basically make sure I feel confident in whatever I wear. MINI: Now that you and your sister Tamera are both parents, are you finding you bounce a lot of mommy musings off of each other? What’s it like to both be raising young boys? TMH: It’s really cool that were both raising young boys and exciting to know that they’ll be friends and are able to play with each other. I love knowing that they’ll have each other in a similar way that Tamera and I have each other. MINI: What changes have you seen in yourself since you became a mom? TMH: I am much more patient. I’ve also learned to really appreciate the small things in life. ■

MINI

PA N T S O N FIRE

For funny lady Kelly Oxford, her career in comedy began on Twitter— picking up a massive following, to the tune of over 550,000 followers. And with her hit book Everything Is Perfect When You’re a Liar out in paperback this January, you can catch a glimpse into the life of this brutally honest, Canadian, mom to Salinger, Henry, and Beatrix and her juggling of life in Los Angeles. INTERVIEW BY KAITLYN KIRBY AND LAUREN KENDALL PHOTO BY HARPER SMITH

M I N I h o l i d a y ‘13

DID YOU KNOW Oxford’s favorite TV mom is Roseanne and she admits she cannot live without her kids or her iPhone.

MINI: We’re so excited to feature you in our

holiday issue! Let’s start by talking about how you became a such a huge Twitter personality. When did you first take to Twitter and what were your first tweets about? KELLY OXFORD: I joined Twitter in march of 2009. I always have tweeted the same sort of observational daily things. MINI: How did your Twitter commentary translate into a blog, a bestselling book, TV scripts, and a screenplay? KO: I’ve always written. Twitter introduced me to other writers who subsequently introduced me to agents. I just gave the agents all of my material. MINI: When you were young, what did you want to be when you grew up? How do you think your younger self would react to your life now? KO: I wanted to be a writer. I don’t think, when you’re young, you expect your life to be anything other than what you have planned for yourself, so I think I’d just be like “Yeah, I know, I’m a writer.” MINI: Tell us more about your book, Everything Is Perfect When You’re a Liar. What inspired you to write it? KO: When I got an agent, I went from writing every day for myself to putting together a thirty-page book proposal and sending it out into the world. On the average, I’m much better at communicating through writing than I am through discussion, so I’ve always done it. MINI: We love that you tweet about your kids and the funny things they say! Tell us

about a funny moment with them recently. KO: This morning Bea, age 5, said she wishes Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse would have sex and babies “already!” MINI: Do you think your children inherited your sense of humor? What traits do you hope they pick up (or don’t pick up) from you or your husband? KO: One thing being a parent for over a decade has taught me is that people are born with their own personalities. The way my husband and I treat them and talk to them definitely influences their boundaries, but other than that, they are who they are. I hope they are more organized than we are, but I think their genes aren’t likely to do that for them. MINI: What are your kids into wearing these days? What looks can we expect to see from each of them? KO: They will literally wear the closest outfit to them in the morning. Clean or not clean. MINI: Parenting is juggling, especially when you’re a working mom. What do you think are the keys to managing the chaos? How do you handle it? KO: Sometimes I’m good at it and sometimes I’m terrible. I find when I’m the best at parenting, I’m the worst at my job and when I’m the best at my job, I’m not the best parent. I don’t think I can expect to be able to do everything well; it’s ludicrous. I was a housewife and made no money for 10 years and I could have worked on my house and my kids every

single day, 24 hours a day, and not had everything in Martha Stewart order. I think we forget that Martha has a team of housekeepers and sous chefs and drivers. Not to mention [she is] 72, with grown children. Now that I’m basically working every single day, I’m definitely better at making the most of my time with them. MINI: You have a lot on your plate. Tell us more about your “typical” day online as a hilarious comedienne and offline as a mom. Do you follow a routine with your kids? KO: I help them off to school, then I go to work, then I come home for dinner and help put them to bed. That’s it! MINI: Your family just moved to Los Angeles from Canada to take the next step in your career. What has been the biggest culture shock for you and your kids? KO: Probably all of the garbage on the streets. Canada is very good at keeping clean. MINI: Now that it’s the holiday season, what are your family’s holiday plans? Do you have holiday traditions you’re looking forward to? KO: We like to listen to a lot of Christmas music. A lot of it. It’s already happening. Henry’s birthday is November 24 and mine is November 29, so that usually kicks off the season for us, musically.

MINI: If you could give your kids one piece

of advice, what would it be? KO: Do what genuinely makes you happy and is your passion, even if I tell you it’s dumb. ■
