Obesity Is your cat fat?

Cats have unhealthy eating habits that are very much like ours: consuming food that is high in calories and carbohydrates. But we play a big role in our cat’s weight by giving them too many treats, free feeding, and feeding human food. We live in a “food is love” culture, and it’s very hard to say no.

I

am surprised that talking about obesity is a taboo topic - even when it is about your cat - also with veterinarians. A video study done of veterinarian cat appointments showed that very few vets even broach the subject, and the ones who did “used humor to strengthen the vet-client relationship”; and spoke directly to the cat. “Squirt, you sure are a big boy for your name.” (Said in their high-pitched cat voice.) It’s a serious topic. Media encourages an unhealthy view of ideal cat weight by publishing images of cats who are overweight; therefore, a lot of people don’t understand what an average sized cat should look like. I use the nine-point system body chart that visually demonstrates emaciated to obese. A 4-5 body score is ideal, 6 is considered overweight and 7+ is obese. Over half of the cats in the United States are overweight, which is defined as 20% more than ideal body weight. Similar to us humans, “ideal” is different for each of us. Measured in pounds, for an average body framed cat, about 10 pounds is ideal.

Why are some cats able to regulate their eating, while others overeat? We think of resisting food temptation as self-control, but cats don’t have an emotional attachment to food like we do. Cats do normally regulate their food intake to their energy requirements, however, in some instances, cats are not able to do that. Research shows this is linked to leptins - the hormones that regulate energy balance by inhibiting hunger. There was a study done where they increased the leptin levels in cats, but they continued to overeat, which concluded that some cats have leptin resistance. If you observe your cat scarfing down meals and gaining weight, leptin resistance could be a contributing factor.

What are the risks of feline obesity? The list of risk factors for obese cats is a long one! A shortened life span is almost guaranteed; a study on dogs showed they lived two years less than their slim counterparts and suggests that this data is the same for cats. Scientific evidence now shows that fat tissue is biologically active. It secretes inflammatory hormones and creates oxidative stress on the body’s tissue - both of which contribute to many diseases that are related to chronic, low-level inflammatory conditions. Obese cats are more likely to develop diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, cancer, urinary tract disease, bladder stones, skin What causes a cat to be overweight? There are many contributing factors; genetics plays a role in problems, arthritis and faster degeneration of joints. your cat’s weight, as does behavior and lifestyle. Certain purebred cats, such as Siamese and Abyssinian tend to be more How do I know if I’m overfeeding my cat? lean. Middle-aged cats are more obese than younger cats. But The feeding instructions on cat food are generalized, and often at the end of the day, it is the same for all species: consuming don’t guide you in the best way to understand how many calories your cat needs per day. I like to use this simplified calculamore calories than you can burn off. tion to figure out cat daily caloric intake:

?

Convert your cat’s weight in pounds to kilograms. For example, an 11-pound cat = 5kg Multiply the kg times 30 and add 70. For example, our 11-pound cat = 5kg X 30 + 70 = 220 kilo calories per day (kcals) For weight loss, feed 70% of this — 0.70 X 200 = 154 Read the labels on your cat food, not all of them communicate the kcals, and if not, send an email to the manufacturer and ask for the information. I find most are happy to respond quickly. The can I happened to grab while writing this article, has 172 kcal/5.5 oz can, which means I would feed about a can a day to the 11-pound cat.

7. Skip treat time and replace with toy or catnip time 8. One vet suggests feeding your cat a moderately palatable food to slow down intake. 9. Increase exercise/activity - playing for just 10 minutes per day is as effective as calorie restriction. Have more interactive wand-toy play with your cat; play fetch; use a laser light (but give a healthy treat at the end); harness/leash train your cat for walks; place beds in places where they have to climb up to get on them; build a catio with climbing structures and shelves.

10. Do regular weigh-ins every 2-3 weeks to monitor progress. It is important to go slow and take the pounds off a little at a 1. Feed 70% less than the suggested amount of calories per time; a crash diet or fasting is detrimental to your cat’s health. day, using the formula above When overweight cats lose some of their excess poundage, 2. Supplements I

t seems that using supplements for our pets is a very common habit for most of us. There are many reasons owners give to add stuff to their pet’s food - help them eat better/faster, ‘enjoy’ it more, add some supposed missing nutrient, or provide some health benefit. Let me just say that with today’s scientific advancements and knowledge, there are very few problems or “missing nutrients” in a good quality pet food. That’s the best place to start - talk to your veterinarian or check with a Board-certified nutritionist (at ACVN. org) to pick a good food. And look for the AAFCO feeding statement as a minimum requirement. Once you’ve picked a good quality food, you really shouldn’t need any enhancements. The other big reason people add a supplement would be to address a per-

ceived or real health issue. You might want to add a joint supplement if you feel there is some arthritis going on. Most of them are not by prescription and can be found in many different places. We all know about glucosamines with or without chondroitin; even though they don’t seem to help people very much, they are still very popular. There may be lots of benefits besides treating arthritis with omega fatty acids, sometimes called omega-3 or -6 fatty acids made from fish oils. You can find omega fatty acids that are plant-based, but they don’t seem to be as effective. It is hard to keep it all straight, because some of these supplements come with collagen, MSM, or many other little known ingredients. Turmeric or curcumin is another product you might see advertised for your pet’s health. Antioxidants get a lot of attention from time to time along with general vitamins. Many of us take probiotics to help our digestive health and want the same for our pets, even if there is no proof they are needed. Most of these products are made with people in mind and even the ones “made for pets’ are not always regulated. Luckily, most of these products are generally safe with few side effects. But remember that that they are NOT controlled or monitored by the FDA, so it is very much buyer beware. The biggest craze to the hit the market recently, for both people and pets is CBD. Probably the most misunderstood (or NOT understood) of supplements out

there today. In states where marijuana is legal, you have to be careful to look for CBD without THC. But CBD, from the hemp plant or the cannabis plant is widely available. Or sometimes the supplement is just marketed as hemp oil. These extracts are touted for the treatment of everything from arthritis to cancer, with little to no proof that they do anything. And they come in oils, tinctures, powders, topical creams and edible treats just to name a few. Veterinary schools and companies are just now starting to do some real research into the possible benefits of CBD but concrete evidence is years away. And like the products mentioned above, there is little to no regulation in how or where they are sold. Whether your pet suffers from anxiety, arthritis, cancer or just needs a good, balanced diet the place to start is with your veterinarian. There are lots of good supplements that ARE sold by vets or through pharmacies with proven benefits that can help your dog or cat. And of course if the situation is serious enough, some form of medication may be needed instead. Next time you are in the veterinarian’s office, ask him or her what they think. What are they reading and what is real with these supplements. We may not know all the answers, but we can help guide you in making the smart and SAFE choice for your pet.
