Each year EQ recognises those who have made significant contributions throughout the season at the annual awards night As the premier event on the Equestrian Queensland calendar, the annual awards night brings the equestrian community together to celebrate the major achievements of sports stars and luminaries. Packaged within an evening of great occasion, this is the night of nights to celebrate with friends, family and acquaintances as we showcase the riders, clubs, volunteers, administrators, officials and events from with all eight sports under the Equestrian Queensland banner Dressage, Eventing, Jumping, Show Horse, Driving, Vaulting, Show Horse, Interschool and Para Equestrian. In order to recognise those who have contributed over a lifetime, Equestrian Queensland is introducing a Hall of Fame. The first inductees into the Hall
of Fame will be announced at the 2017 annual awards dinner and presentation will be held on Saturday, 3 February 2018 at Rydges Southbank. Equestrian Queensland is inviting all members past and present to nominate those who they feel worthy of this accolade. Nominees for the Athlete must be superior achievers at the highest level of competition and have made an outstanding contribution to the sport in Queensland. The primary requirement for
selection as a General Member is high level achievement from personal effort or initiative, in a field of endeavour that contributes to the performances of athletes or to the development and status of sport in Queensland. NBC to televise FEI World Equestrian Games The NBC Sports Group has reached an agreement for exclusive multiplatform United States media rights to the FEI World Equestrian Games™ Tryon 2018 on September 11 - 23. The agreement includes an unprecedented amount of national equestrian sport coverage. The FEI World Equestrian Games™ return to the United States for the second time in eight years and will be held at the Tryon International Equestrian Center in Mill Spring, North Carolina. The FEI World Equestrian Games™, one of the biggest events on the global sporting calendar, is held every four years in the middle of the Olympic cycle, combining eight World Championships at one event. The eight equestrian disciplines - Jumping, Dressage, Para-Equestrian Dressage, Eventing, Driving, Endurance, Vaulting and Reining will all be contested. An anticipated 1,000 athletes, 1,500 horses, and 500,000 spectators from more than 70 countries are expected to attend. Tickets to the event have already been sold to people from all 50 U.S. states and 31 countries. The games are projected to be the highestattended sporting event in the United States in 2018. Olympic Channel: Home of Team USA will present more than 50 hours of coverage, while NBC and NBCSN will combine for nearly 15 hours of live coverage from Tryon International Equestrian Center. All coverage will be streamed live on NBCSports.com and the NBC Sports app - NBC Sports Group's live streaming product for mobile devices, tablets, and connected TVs. The World Equestrian Games venue for 2018 will be Tryon in North Carolina. UPDATE FOR AUSTRALIA: The Olympic Channel should be available to stream from around the world. Now that NBC is confirmed, they will also distribute the rights to local channels globally, so while this is not yet finalised, local coverage should also be available in each region. The inaugural FEI World Equestrian Games™ were hosted in Stockholm, Sweden, in 1990, and were most recently held in Normandy, France in 2014. The 2014 Games in Normandy attracted more than 500,000 on-site spectators. In addition to its state-of-the-art competition facilities, the 1,600-acre Tryon International Equestrian Center is an equestrian lifestyle destination complete with lodging, shops, restaurants, and amenities. Over the last two years NBC Sports Group has presented numerous equestrian events, including the Longines FEI World Cup™ Jumping Final 2017 in Omaha and the Longines FEI World Cup™ Jumping North American League, events in New York and Kentucky, and the equestrian competitions at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

Ninety fiver percent of horses with the itch have an allergy of some sort and while ever the source of the allergy is present, the skin condition will persist. Itchy horses are a never ending source of frustration and you will spend an enormous amount of time, effort, and money in trying to deal with it. Yes, most conditions can be managed, but is it worth it? Itchy horses continually rub and damage themselves, detracting from their attractive appearance and they cost you a fortune in damaged rugs and equipment. Be very wary if buying the horse in winter as this is the time of the year that insects are less common and many horses will improve in coat condition.

Never buy a horse that is lame The `golden’ rule, never, never, buy a horse that is lame. By lame, I mean clinically lame where it is obvious to anyone that the horse has a lameness problem. There is a difference - many horses have some problems but are not clinically lame, and in many situations, can be managed. You need expert advice as to whether these problems are acceptable and manageable and there are uses and places for most horses. Each different condition is situational and you need advice for these sorts of problems. There are only three future possibilities for a lame horse - it will stay the same, get better, or become worse. No one can know for sure. A horse that is obviously lame is useless. Where ever you are, you will be barred from using the horse. Do not pay for, or take posses-
Never buy a horse that has bad feet Everyone has heard the adage, `No foot, no horse’. This formula has become a truism for very good reason. Paying strict attention to the size, shape, and quality of a horse’s feet is one of the `big three’ important aspects for potential new horse owners to consider. Yes, nearly every foot problem can be managed, but why buy a problem? How do you tell if the horse has bad feet? There is never an answer, and as always, professional and expert advice is essential. Sufficient to say that if you have any questions or doubts about the quality and condition of the horse’s feet, be very wary of pursuing the horse. Make sure the horse and rider `match’ By far, the most common mistake people make is to mismatch the horse and rider.
It happens all the time and invariably ends in disaster. The most common scenario is to pair an inexperienced rider, (usually a younger child), with an inexperienced or untrained horse. There is no hope for success. Horses love to be ridden and trained. They are, however, herd animals and must respond to a leader. In nature, it is the leader of the mob, in ridden situations, it is the rider. If the rider is confident and competent, and knows exactly what is required, then the horse responds magnificently and harmony prevails. However, if the rider is inexperienced, lacks confidence, and in particular, the ability to mentally dominate the horse, chaos is inevitable. A true `schoolmaster’ is one of the most valuable horses around and well worth a premium. Discussion of matching the horse and rider can go on forever and it is impossible to cover every possibility, suffice to say that it is by far the most important element in selection of a horse to purchase, and, as always, expert advice must be sought. Don’t buy a horse when you can’t afford it How much a horse is worth, is the subject of another section however, one thing is for certain sure, the `cheapest’ thing about any horse is what you pay for it. Horses are extremely expensive to keep and maintain and many people do not realise what the on costs of owning a horse are. Do not buy a horse and think it is an investment. The reality is, that you should only pay as much for a horse as you can realistically afford to lose. If your situation is such that you have a very strict budget before acquiring a horse, then you probably should not pursue the dream. This maybe a little harsh, but if you cannot afford to pay for expert advice at the time you are looking to buy, then in most probability, you won’t be able to properly care for the horse once you own it and any value that was in the horse when you bought it, will quickly be lost. Again, many situations are manageable but be sure you talk to an experienced advisor before buying the horse. Continued page 13

Working to a check list avoids disappointment from page 12 Always verify the horse’s performance record This is easily one of the simplest and most objective checks or pre purchase assessments that can be made, but so often people take on trust what they are told. It was once said to me, “Don’t believe anything you hear, and only half of what you see”and this is very good advice. Take the opportunity to confirm and verify the horse’s performance record. Do not take it as given what you may be told. How many times do I hear the statement, “The horse is training at medium level, but actually still competes at novice”. This is delusional and certainly does not add any value to the horse. Of even more critical importance, is to verify what the horse has actually been doing in the three to six months prior to being offered for sale. The best endorsement or warranty that is available for a potential purchaser is to be able to confirm that the horse has actually been in full training and competition in the period immediately prior to purchase. Be particularly wary of the horse that has been spelling, or even worse, turned out in a paddock for an extended period. Almost always this is indicative of some problem, very often tractability or lameness. Be very cautious. Never buy an overpriced horse What is a horse worth? The reality is that any particular horse is only worth what someone is prepared to pay. Unfortunately, the only objective valuation is what the animal is worth at the meatworks. Different people perceive value in many ways, but the cold hard facts are that there are only three, often very subjective, components to a horse’s value: `Soundness’, `Suitability’, and `Training’. Many horses are valued according to their performance record, and or, potential. Obviously the performance record is objective, certainly can be verified and clearly demonstrates that the horse has been

capable of achieving certain results, thereby adding some value, but nothing is ever that simple. (See section on Buying a Champion). Potential is valueless and do not be fooled into thinking anything else. What is potential and who decides what it is worth? By far the majority of horses are sold on the basis of potential and they are grossly overpriced. Be particularly wary of horses from professional trainers or dealers. This is not meant to be disparaging to such people, many of them have been, and still are, long time personal friends of mine. Buyers must be very aware that often this is one of their main forms of income. Many of these people acquire horses from various sources, give them some basic training, education, and preparation, and offer them for sale. These horses are being sold on `potential’. Therefore, this immediately becomes an oxymoron. Buyers should be very aware that professional trainers only achieve success by competing with superior horses. Rest assured that if the trainer really thought the horse had real potential, then the horse would not be offered for sale. Placing a `real’ value on soundness, suitability, and training is each a full subject on its own and full of an infinite number of variables.
Do not try to buy a `champion’ I have been very lucky and extremely fortunate to have spent a lifetime working with horses, and, during that time, have been blessed with having been able to have worked with some of the most successful trainers, riders, and horses in the industry, across most of the disciplines, including the racing and performance horse sectors. One cannot help but question, what it is that makes one particular individual more successful than another? I have absolutely no doubt in my mind that at least 70 – 80% of the success of a particular horse/trainer combination comes from the superior horsemanship skills, competitive ability, and intuitive instincts of the trainer or rider. Yes, there are superior horses and champions, but a lot of ordinary and lesser horses can be made to look very good, and compete very successfully, by a professional horseman. Without a shadow of a doubt, the one skill that separates the better trainers from the next, is the ability to turn horses over. Arrival at the elite level in any discipline as a horse/rider combination, almost always comes from having been able to constantly try out large numbers of individuals. This means that they must be able to move horses on. One of the special requirements to be able to turn horses over, is the ability to be able to sell horses that, in the opinion of the train-
er, have reached their potential. . This horse, that is competing successfully, will obviously be expected to achieve a premium price. Aspiring purchasers of horses, should well realise that they could well be lucky to even replicate a portion of the performance ability that the professional trainer has been able to coax from the horse. It is a rare situation that the new owner can reach the same level of performance, and even more unlikely that they will improve the horse. That is not to say that individuals should not carry on and purchase a horse if all their analysis and assessments indicate that the particular horse exactly suits their requirements. I am simply saying that a large number of the so called `lemons’ that people buy are horses in this category. The mere fact that a particular horse has won a ribbon or event under one management system, does in any way guarantee that that particular outcome will easily be replicated. Do not buy a skinny or poorly presented horse Purchase of a horse is a major responsibility and an enormous ongoing expense. Always ensure that the horse you are buying has some value. If the vendor does not think enough of the horse to have it presented in prime condition, what are you really buying? They will always give you a variety of reasons as to why the horse is like it is. Do not take the chance. Once you take possession of the horse, you are stuck with it. Poorly presented horses nearly always mean that the horse has some problem. This may be medical, or temperament, or managerial, or performance ability. Leave it and find another. Check all the basics Always thoroughly review the basics. Be certain the horse is the correct height if you are going to show in measured classes. Check to see that the horse will load easily and travel comfortably and avoid `scramblers’.

with, when a pellet is produced it is powdered before it is manufactured. Does this encourage normal chewing of the horse? The answer is no - we need to ensure that our horses are encouraged to chew and grind the feed efficiently. If we do not than the horse’s digestive process will be interfered with and this may lead to digestive upsets such as colic or diarrhoea. Minor complications may be loss of appetite but one major concern is an increase in the diagnosis of ulcers in horses. Soaking hay in water is quite common these days, supposedly to reduce dust and to reduce nonstructural carbohydrates NSC. This is also used for horses that suffer from respiratory or metabolic conditions. However, soaking of hay can actually reduce essential nutrients such as phosphorus and magnesium. There have been good studies performed to look at the difference between steaming hay and soaking. When hays are being harvested in poor drying conditions and
adverse weather, it could mean that the hay may be baled before it has sufficient moisture to ensure longevity. Mould is possibly one of the most irritable aspects of hay and is very commonly found. It is important to reduce the mould and dust particles which will always appear when a horse is being fed hay or chaffs. Stabled horses will suffer more than horses out on pasture. There are two problems - the dust and mould in the hay and chaffs and the dust and mould contained in horse bedding. Horses that do have a history of respiratory disease certainly need special care. Clearly it is time-consuming to soak hay. There is no doubt that hay forms a very important part of your horse’s diet, roughage being essentially the most important part of the diet. A reasonably new process of steaming hays with added minerals, herbs, vitamins and some grains and oil to form a high roughage pellet has now reached the market. There have certainly been hay

What happens when you walk into your local feed store and you see an array of different types of horse feed? This can be quite daunting so I'm going to provide you with an easy solution to feeding your horse, one that will provide the horse with the correct nutrient intake on a daily basis. We live in a world now where time is very precious, we don't wish to waste time unnecessarily we need to ensure that our time is well managed as are our horses. It is not difficult to feed a horse, their needs are quite simple, their management quite simple, they have evolved to graze almost consistently throughout the day. We are very blessed to be in a country where our horses are able to be outdoors most of the time. Those of you who stable your horses, it becomes more important for you to ensure that your horse is being provided enough roughage every day. What you feed your horse, will depend on the workload and many other aspects such as the breed of the horse and its age. Feeding will also involve other forms of management such as maintaining the health of the horse's teeth, a good worming program and body management. Stress can be a huge factor in your horse's overall health and well-being. Because our lives are so full in today's world it is important to ensure that our time spent with the horse is mentally healthy and relaxing for him or her and for you. There are many ways to approach feeding your horse, you can go to all the trouble of buying all the different types of feed such as oaten chaff, lucerne chaff, oats or barley and different types of hay plus a good daily supplement. Then there are the different types and brands of feed, but come in various forms sweet feeds, pellets and all types of processed feeds. Let's look at the pellets to begin

These pellets are not powdered before being manufactured they are simply cut and then steamed they do not reach temperatures above 70°C which simply means that the molecular structure is not affected, in fact the nutritional value is actually increased. Independent studies have shown that horses actually slow down their chewing process whilst being fed this type of feed. This has several advantages one being the horse will not develop bad habits whereby he rushes his food and two, if the horse chews and grinds his food slowly and is not rushed then he will benefit greatly. It also means that there will be a reduction in digestive upsets. The other benefit of this type of feeding is at the nutritional value is literally guaranteed, there is no waste, they are very convenient to use and can be transported anywhere. There is no doubt that the feed industry uses many different types of by products in pelleting and premix production. I recommend this type of feed to almost all horse owners and riders as I have great confidence in this type of product. In my opinion the most important part of the horse’s diet will always be roughage feeding a pellet such as the above plus hay and grazing should provide most horses with an adequate daily nutritional intake. Dental checks for horses of all ages By SAMANTHA GUNTER, AEDP The common advice given to most horse owners is that horses should see the dentist every 12 months. A qualified dentist, however, will alter this time frame to suit your particular horse’s needs. Often a horse will require more regular treatment, however, it is also possible that a horse may need to be seen less regularly, especially older horses that have had regular treatment throughout their life. Nonetheless, regardless of age, it needs to be a qualified dentist who recommends a timeframe, otherwise you could be either putting your horse’s health in jeopardy by allowing problems to emerge that otherwise wouldn’t, or you could be paying for useless dental visits! So, what determines how often your dentist will want to see your horse at each age bracket? Youngn’s – let’s say two to six years – will almost always need more regular dentistry. Six months is the go-to timeframe recommended and this is because of the many changes that occur during this period. Deciduous teeth are shed, permanent teeth erupt, and usually horses are mouthed and brokenin at this time. The teeth also erupt more quickly during these early years so they become very sharp, very quickly. A lot of things can go wrong at this time and they go wrong in the mouth of an inexperienced, immature horse. If you’d like more details on your young horse, please refer to my article ‘Dentistry for the Young Horse’. Very rarely will a qualified dentist recommend a young horse be seen less regularly than six months because of the aforementioned reasons. Middle Age – roughly seven years to about 18 years - is a timeframe that things settle and eruption slows down, so if a qualified dentist has properly seen your horse during his/her younger years, then this is the time your dentist can recommend to reduce the regularity of the dental visits. However, this general rule will not apply if you horse hasn’t had competent dental treatment during the younger years. This is because of the many problems that form due to
neglect: deciduous teeth can get stuck causing permanent teeth to erupt incorrectly and feed to pack and fester and genetics and lifestyle cause malocclusions to form and become destructive. For more in depth information on the possible malocclusions in horse’s mouth, please refer to my article ‘Major Malocclusions’. So, depending on the diagnosis of your horse’s mouth, your dentist may recommend they revisit your horse more regularly to address these problems. However, after a few visits to reverse any problems, this age group can usually revert back to annual dental visits as the eruption of teeth, and therefore the formation of sharp points, has slowed. Retirees - obviously not all horses 18 years and over are retired, but this term will be used to encompass all of our lovely golden oldies! The older a horse is, the slower their teeth erupt. A 20-year-old horse, who has been lucky enough to see a qualified dentist when due for its entire life, may only need a touch up every year or 18 months. This is in stark contrast to a horse that has not received such careful and particular dental care. With age, comes a myriad of other problems that if the horse hasn’t seen a qualified dentist and hasn’t had any malocclusions addressed and reversed earlier in life, can be detrimental to an older horse’s health and quality of life. All malocclusions’ eventual outcome is tooth loss caused by periodontal disease and subsequent decay and pain. A horse only has a certain amount of tooth that can erupt throughout their lifespan - once that tooth has erupted fully, it will eventually wear down to nothing or be put under so much pressure by the surrounding oral structures that it will fall out. It does not just magically fall out however, and the years leading up to this scenario are painful and often dangerous for the horse as they are no longer able to chew properly, thus risking colic and choke. Excessive weight loss is an almost certain symptom of a dental problem, and as most of you know, it is very hard to get condition back on an older horse who loses weight. For more information on how to help your old horse deal with old age and to maintain their condition, please refer to my article
‘Dentistry for the Old Horse’. If you have an old horse who, for one reason or another, hasn’t been able to keep up-to-date with the dentist, your dentist may not actually be able to do much for them except recommend a new diet. Once they’ve reached this age, a horse doesn’t have enough tooth left to erupt to enable a dentist to do any major corrections. If a dentist were to drastically reduce a wavemouth for example (refer to my malocclusions article for more detail), the horse would be left unable to chew since their teeth would no grind together and they would not have enough tooth left to erupt to fix this situation. Basically this horse, having reached such a bad stage of a malocclusion, will need to be on a special diet for the remainder
of their life to ensure they do not colic or choke. This is not a good situation and can often cost the owner a lot of money having to provide this food, and feed many times a day to keep their horse healthy. The dentist will recommend they visit the horse every year if only to help postpone any loss of tooth and any further periodontal deterioration. The dental health of each age group can be maintained very economically as long as the owner takes the time to firstly make sure their dentist is properly qualified, listens to their dentist, and ensures their horse is never too overdue for a dental visit. The earlier a horse can get into a good dental routine the healthier your horse will be for their entire life!

Why we should look after our horse’s liver By ANGELA DAVISON - The Horse Herbalist The liver dominates the abdominal cavity but is it life giving and essential? With over 500 functions already identified the answer is a resounding yes. It's the body's chemical factory. It deals with functions concerned with the processes of digestion, sugar metabolism - therefore a factor in insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome. We're talking bloodstream purification, the biotransformation of many nasties, it neutralises poisons, it's the chief supplier and balancer of glucose - the basic fuel of the body. Whilst the liver is an amazing regenerative organ which works tirelessly, modern living practices affect us all, including our horses and can take its toll. Liver insufficiency frequently underpins signs or symptoms of disease or discomfort therefore it's important to help the liver to function at its best. To do this it is suggested that a herbal liver tonic is used to tone before detoxing as detoxing can be an uncomfortable process. In most cases, once the liver is toned it's own innate detoxification function does the rest. A toned liver, if it needs more help in the detoxification process will cope much better and the individual can remain in work without feeling ill or uncomfortable. So what sorts of things may impact the liver? Things such as stress, environmental pollution, bacteria and virus, unclean water, drugs, insecticides - including border or quarantine sprays, polluted grasses, some weeds, some herbs, any trauma, lack of exercise or over-exertion, any illness, accident or injury, inappropriate feed, allergies/sensitivities and poison. Even though the horse may not appear to show any problems directly after any of the above indicators, there's every probability that it will exhibit any of the symptoms below in the following months. Symptoms include dull in the coat, temperament changes, lack-lustre performance, depressed, itchy, below par or not quite him/herself. Clearly these symptoms can indicate all manner of disease and if the horse is sick then seek the services of a horse veterinarian and a qualified horse herbalist. However, giving a three week course of liver-toning herbs will never hurt and could be considered as good preventative medicine. Generally it's good practice to give the horse a liver tonic at the turn of the seasons or a three week course before coming back into work. St.Mary's Thistle (Milk Thistle) - Silybum marianum - is one of my most frequently used herbal extracts in 30 years of practice. This herbs usage as a medicine was written about over 2400 years ago, and science today continues to prove silybum marianum's ability to protect and tone many organs, primarily the liver. The dried herb can be purchased from a health food store or a reputable horse herb supplier. Make the dry herb into a tea. This allows all the water-soluble constituents in the herb to be dissolved into the tea, therefore your horse's body can utilize it immediately, rather than having to go through the gut for absorption. Riders were selected in the disciplines of Dressage, Showjumping, Eventing, Advanced Horsemanship and Mounted Games for the 25th Annual Pony Club NSW State Camp. Congratulations to all who applied for the State Camp, the selection process is always difficult with a very high standard of riders applying. Camp starts on Sunday where all riders meet and settle in. Instruction takes place from Monday to Thursday. Evenings include lectures from wellknown personalities in the horse world, veterinary surgeons and other fun activities. State Camp is not only about receiving the best instruction for you and your horse it is also about making great friendships which can last a lifetime. Its all in the transitions! By TANJA KRAUS Every time we are riding our horses, we are going to ask them to perform a countless number of transitions. From the basic transitions that we recognise, and prepare him for - walk to trot, trot to canter, canter to trot, trot to walk, walk to halt, and any combination of those, to the more advanced, transitioning to lateral movements, and then the ones we may forget about, walking off after we mount, or asking for a hindquarter disengagement or sideways to line up next to a mounting block or gate. Basically, everything we do with our horses has some kind of 'transition' that the horse more than likely has to be prepared for (or execute unbalanced). How many times have you lined the horse up with the mounting block or gate and he has moved? And how many times have you blamed him moving on his 'bad attitude'? What if he had to move because he was out of balance? In order for us to help the horse execute quality transitions, we must train ourselves to prepare him for them in a way that benefits the horse and allows him to perform the maneuver more easily. This is both in a physical way (his balance and self-carriage before, during and after the maneuver), and in a mental way (his under-
standing of your cues - both your preparatory cues and your cues that ask him to perform the maneuver). Once we begin looking at the horse, and what he needs before, during and after a transition, some of us may start to think we aren't supporting him as much as we could! Balance is a huge component of executing a quality transition. So before we are asking for our horse to make a transition, we should be checking to see if he is in balance. Once we check if he is in balance, we can either give him a cue to balance himself, or if he is in balance, prepare him for the transition, and then ask for the transition, reward the transition, and soften to allow the movement to continue. The “Riding a transition” conversation looks something like this; “Are you in balance? “Let me help you get in balance. “I'm letting you know we are about to do something “This is what I want you to do “Good horse that is what I wanted “Let's continue.” As our horse makes progress in his skill and his education, the length of time between each of these becomes shorter, and as a team, we become more proficient in having this conversation and understanding each other. As we educate ourselves, and our horses across all aspects of our riding, it is important to 'break down' elements and explore each part. If we can break things down into small pieces, it is easier for us to teach, and for our horse to understand, each element that goes into a movement. Then we can begin to put the pieces of the puzzle back together.

A Legacy of Legends in Tamworth in 2018 Ray Hunt and Tom Durrance are widely considered the greatest and most influential horsemen of all time. They approached the horse as an equal and forever changed the horse world. But with the loss of Tom in 2003 and Ray in 2009, many worried their legacy of compassionate horsemanship and the exchange of knowledge they encouraged might be lost. A Legacy of Legends was born out of that concern. Formed by Buck Brannaman and Carolyn Hunt, it holds an annual gathering to honour the teachings of Ray and Tom. This gathering in turn helps support A Legacy of Legends Scholarship Program, which pairs students with horsemen who actually studied with the two legends. Successful applicants are provided learning opportunities with horsemen who emulate the philosophy of Tom Durrance and Ray Hunt. The goal is to preserve and protect the legacy of these two great horsemen and assure future generations can continue to learn from them.

Wet weather problems for horses By DAVID LOVELL BVSc Redlands Veterinary Clinic With the beginning of the new year we usually see a lot of rain whch means wet muddy horses and the many problems for the health of the horse associated with the wet. In particular, we see an increase in the incidences of laminitis, colic, and skin disease. Skin diseases are very common and a large number of horses are affected. The big three problems, Rain Scald, Greasy Heel, and Mud Fever, are in fact, different presentations of the same disease. All are directly related to persistent wet conditions and can be difficult to prevent. As always, an understanding of how they occur is fundamental in being able to introduce management practices to protect your horse. Obviously the simplest practice is to keep your horse dry. There is nothing wrong with washing your horse, as long as he is able to dry off quickly and the skin returns to normal. The problems occur when the skin remains wet for prolonged periods. The organism that causes the above three conditions is known as Dermatophilus. This is a type of bacteria that requires a particular environment to grow and survive. Primarily the requirement is protection from the oxygen and light in the environment. The bug needs to be able to hide somewhere
Wet weather can bring all sorts of problems for those horses having to endure the elements and if the conditions are right, the germ establishes itself, forms colonies, and invades local tissues, in this case, the skin and causes disease. Rain Scald typically occurs along the back and top-line. Greasy Heel affects the lower limbs, most commonly the back of the pastern, and Mud Fever the front of the cannon bones. The different areas have some slightly different characteristics that predispose them to infections. The top-line usually is not a problem in wellconditioned healthy horses. These have nice oily skin and a very rounded elastic skin contour that water easily runs off. Horses that are debilitated have drier skin and little pockets that can hold moisture and not dry out so quickly. Their hair coat also tends to be a little longer.
The pasterns, in particular the heels, often have longer hair and a number of grooves and contours that hold water. The front of the cannons obviously shed water easily but the skin is relatively thin and taut in this area. The major culprit that then contributes to development of disease is mud. Obviously the heels are usually covered, and often submerged, in mud. The cannon almost always have mud spattered all over them and the top-line can have mud under different conditions. The mud stuck to the wet skin provides a five star environment for the Dermatophilus organism to invade. The organism is ubiquitous, that means it is a normal environmental organism that lives everywhere. It is not contagious as such, it simply is everywhere and is on the lookout for somewhere to colonise. The bacteria invade the moist irritated skin and provoke an even greater inflammatory reaction this causes serum to exude and enables the formation of a scab which now replaces the mud as a cover for the organism. The skin infection can spread very quickly and the typical presentations occur. Theoretically, treatment is simple. Expose the organism to virtually any antibiotic or antiseptic agent and it is quickly killed. It is not resistant to drugs. Â Continued page 31

Understanding wet weather ailments can aid in treatment From page 30
The difficulty is getting the drugs to contact the organism. If the bug is hiding under the cove of mud or scab, and the drugs are applied to the surface, they do not come in contact. Similarly drugs that are carried in the blood are also limited because there is no blood supply to the nooks and crannies where the germ is hiding. The key to treatment is to get rid of the cover. All mud should be washed off the horse’s legs and body at least twice daily and most importantly, the skin dried with a towel. Any longer hair should be clipped or removed. S Scabs are a lot more difficult. They often are quite painful, and there obviously already is infection present, and so the horse resents attempts to remove the scab. This may require sedation. Bandaging the area with a surgical soap or oil, or lanolin based ointment to soften the scab to aid removal can be very helpful. Once the scab is removed, the organism can be easily killed. Sometimes there is acute inflammation and irritation to the skin and a topical corticosteroid oint-

A particular problem for rain scald can be horses with rugs that are out in the paddock where the rug gets wet, the weather is hot and humid, soaks the skin, causes irritation and the germ prevails. Greasy Heel often poses a particular extra problem which can make it one of the most difficult diseases of all to treat. The Dermatophilus organism can cause an allergic type reaction in some horses. The correct term is an immune mediated disease. In this situation the body mounts an antibody reaction to the presence of the germ which causes a vasculitis. This means inflammation of the capillaries and blood vessels.
The vessels break down and serum leaks into the tissues and the lower legs swell. The condition is far more common in chestnut and light coloured horses and breeds that have a finer or more sensitive skin. Once the reaction has been set up, it will persist even after the organism has long been killed because of the continual reaction to light. These horses often require a course of systemic cortisone to control the intense inflammatory reaction occurring in the tissues. Prevention is obviously the best way to control rain related diseases and hopefully an understanding of the reasons and factors that allow the disease to occur can play a major part.
Once the problem is established, our approach at Redlands is to control the inflammation, remove hair, scab, and mud and apply medications. We also see a marked increase in laminitis and hoof infections during wet weather. The laminitis can certainly be due to the green grass and increased load of available sugar, but often is just an environmentally induced inflammation of the laminae caused by continual exposure to wet conditions. This is not usually as potentially devastating as the true toxin induced founders however the mechanical manifestations can be the same and treatment is urgent and essential. Hoof infections occur most commonly in unshod horses and any area of overgrowth, cracks, or chipping allow moisture and mud to infiltrate and set up inflammation and lameness. Colic occurs commonly with any change in the weather. In periods of continual rain, all animals tend to be miserable and as a result, they do not graze and eat as regularly and it is the disruption to the normal routine which creates gut disturbances and can lead to colic.

Performances on Road to MM Raceday Fittingly Magic Millions graduates provided the biggest highlights at the Road to Magic Millions raceday at Doomben last month. Among the day's stars was Pierata who confirmed his status as the horse to beat in the $2 million Gold Coast Magic Millions 3YO Guineas with a spectacular win in the Group Three Vo Rogue Plate (1350m). A colt by former champion Magic Millions graduate Pierro, Pierata sat midfield for much of the race before coming with a paralysing turn of foot much to the delight of his jubilant connections. Should Pierata deliver as favourite in the Magic Millions Guineas in a fortnight he will scoop $1.7 million in what would be the biggest single pay day in Queensland racing history. First prizemoney for the Guineas is $1.2 million while Pierata would sweep a $500,000 Summer Crown bonus if successful on the Coast. Trainer Greg Hickman purchased Pierata for $160,000 at last year's Gold Coast Yearling Sale from the Kitchwin Hills draft. Earlier in the afternoon the all female ownership of Meryl celebrated her breakthrough group victory in the BJ McLachlan Stakes. Bred and sold by Rosari Farm for $240,000, Quackerjack is trained by Mark Newnham. Rosari will present an I Am Invincible half sister at the 2018 Gold Coast Yearling Sale. The 2018 Magic Millions Raceday is home to the world renowned $10 million Raceday and will be held on Saturday, January 13.

Pony Club NSW is a not-for-profit organization invested into the development of horse riding in NSW through targeting grassroots, and elite development programs, competitions and education programs. It exists to encourage horsemanship amongst its members, to provide appropriate coaching and competition, and to raise awareness of sportsmanship and citizenship of its members. The main objectives are: * encourage young people to ride and learn to enjoy all kinds of sport connected with horses and riding * provide instruction on riding and horsemanship and to instill in members proper animal care * promote the highest ideals of sportsmanship, citizenship and loyalty, thereby cultivating strength of character and self discipline So if you are looking at joining pony club in 2018 there are many pony clubs throughout NSW (and around the country) where you can find out more.
One is the Murwillumbah Pony Club based at the Murwillumbah Showgrounds. It has great facilities, stables, camping, canteen, dressage arenas, jumping and sporting equipment, qualified instructors, and friendly helpful members. Rally days, clinics or gymkhanas are held most Sundays along with social functions, fundraising events and an end of year trophy presentation. The Murwillumbah Pony Club holds an annual three day camp in January. The kids get to meet new friends from throughout the Northern Rivers, learn valuable skills in all disciplines from instructors, play games not only on horseback but also on foot with their new friends. All meals are catered for and there are stables to keep your horse safe. Bookings and payments are required prior to the event. CABARITA BULL & BRONC SPECTACULAR Don't miss the action at the next Cabarita Pony Club Bull & Bronc Spectacular! Thrills and spills, Bucking Bulls & Broncs, Poddy Calf Rides and Barrel Racing will be on the action packed program in the centre arena on Friday 5th January. Plenty of seating will be available around the arena or take a blanket and be even closer to view the three hour program. Gates open at the Cabarita Beach Pony Club Grounds at 5:30 NSW time for a 6:30 start. Plenty of Cowboys will be showing off their riding skills on the Bulls and Broncs, trying to make the eight seconds time, just to get a score. Some of the best bucking stock will be there on the night challenging each rider with twists and turns to unceremoniously dump them in the dirt. Even the young Cowboys will have their moment in the spotlight trying to stay on board the Poddy Calves. Yep they all have to start somewhere. Not forgetting the Cowboys protectors, the brave Bullfighting Clowns, using their speed and precision distracting the bull. They certainly earn their keep. The Cowgirls and their barrel racing horses will be showing off their racing skills, aiming for the fastest times negotiating the three barrel course. Come and cheer them on, the louder the cheers the faster they go. Ian Bostock, the comedy clown, well what can we say about him ..... fun and laughter ..... he is sure to have you laughing at all his corny jokes and antics with his ever faithful sidekicks. His good old mate "Harry" has survived a round or two up against some of the meanest bulls, but he never complains. Live band performing on stage will entertain with great music to finish the night. Food and Booth facilities are available throughout the night. (No alcohol to be conveyed onto the grounds) Police and security will be in attendance. Summer time in Australia brings increases in temperature that add stresses from the environment for our horses. We can build up each horse’s defence mechanisms from within using herbs that help most horses cope with the Summer heat. Photosensitisation and sunburn, insect bites, itch, cracked hooves are just some of the issues your horse may be affected by as a result of too much sun and heat.

When the ‘heat within’ is not balanced your horses will seek out cool areas and may be thirsty, aggressive, restless and intolerant to work. Introducing cooling herbs and considering the energetic aspect of these herbs will help bring coolness to the body, and in doing so, assist each horse in being more comfortable throughout the hotter months. Blending herbs for Summer which contains the cooling herbs: Calendula, Clivers, Rosehips, Marshmallow root, and Dandelion leaf can be a way to cover off on most Summer discomforts. These herbs come together nutritionally to support the whole body and this will reflect in the body with a shinier coat, healthier skin and stronger hooves. Adding a scoop of these blended herbs for the hot months will assist most horses in coping through Summer, strengthening each horse from within, by cleaning the skin so that it can ‘breathe’ and making the immune system stronger. A herbal approach will help to buffer your horse from the onslaught of the coming hot weather.
