Polo hits the beach Polo isn’t something you would expect to see by the sea but this month, the Gold Coast will be the venue for a unique tournament promoting the sport. Polo Enterprises will present Paspaley Polo By The Sea on December 18 at The Spit, Main Beach just north of Surfers Paradise. Polo Enterprises Australia is dedicated to introducing the sport of polo to the broader community, promoting professional polo players, attracting new players, creating hospitality and entertainment opportunities for the general public as well corporate organizations at polo events and growing the sport generally. The idea is to bring the sport to the beach, to the people and to show why it’s one of the fastest growing spectator sports in the world. Australia has its own contingent of professional players, some of whom play within the country while others such as Ruki Baillieu, Glen Gilmore and Robert Archibald, also travel the international circuit. The event, supported by the Gold Coast City Council, will bring together Australia’s best polo professionals, and rising talent, including Australia’s top ranked player, Ruki Baillieu for a day of action and competition. Then, as the sun sets, the entertainment continues with a stellar lineup of DJs to entertain the crowd into the night. The event is shaping up to be the Gold Coast's social event of the year. The Polo Lounge will offer plenty of shade, cooling ‘mist machines’, DJ and cash bar serving food, premium beer, wine and cocktails. This is a unique opportunity to experience the the excitement of the sport in a location renowned for its relaxed lifestyle. The toys they just weren't ready; the horses had no manes. The arms kept falling off the dolls and the paint wouldn't dry on the trains. Mrs Christmas kept nagging him and throwing her arms in the air. The workshop was in disarray and three of the elves weren't there. Santa couldn't get a wheel to fit onto a bicycle frame. The sleigh had a crooked axle and two of the reindeer were lame. Amidst all of this chaos then, a knock came to the door. Santa strode to open it a-muttering "Now what more?" He stood upon the doorstop with his hands upon his hips and to the little angel there, a curse came from his lips. What do you want?' he bellowed out. "Well, I've got the Christmas tree. What do you want me to do with it, Santa sir?" said she. And to this very day, you know, for all the world to see, there's always been an angel on top of the Christmas Tree.

The Horse Report

How much can a horse pull? By GARY ROLLANS EA Level2 Driving Coach. EA Coach Educator. What a horse can pull and what it is capable of pulling varies according to many factors. These factors range from road and terrain conditions to individual breeds, physical and mental capabilities. Horses bred with fine bone and light body such as miniature horses arabs and thoroughbreds can be very successfully used in harness however we have to remember that certain breeds and in fact bloodlines have been specifically and genetically bred for generations for an intended discipline. The following guidelines have been taken from Max Pape’s book ‘The Art of Driving’ and have been used by horseman for generations. The 1:3 Power to Weight Ratio: A suitably bred horse can pull three times its own body weight on a flat smooth surface for a short distance. A young green horse would certainly spoil if expected to pull this ratio. The 1:2 Power to Weight Ratio. The horse is capable of pulling twice its own body weight on rough or slightly hilly going. The 1:1 Power to Weight Ratio. This ratio is set as a guideline for horses working in hilly areas, across fields or sandy tracks.

The FEI minimum weight for a Marathon carriage is: Single pony 90kg Horse 150kg Pair pony 225kg Pair horse 350kg Four-in-hand pony 300kg Four-in-hand horse 600kg. Minimum weights were set with safety in mind for the vehicle strength and controllability. Let’s say, for example, a horse of 15hh welsh cob type would be 400kg, the driver 60kg, the groom 60kg and the carriage 150kg. This totals 270kg now although this load is now 130kgs below the 1:1 ratio. Most competition drivers would know that the horse would still have to be rather fit and conditioned to complete the marathon section and pass a vet check at this ratio. Using the table you can work out if you your horse and carriage are suitably matched to the type of driving activities you are involved in. In summary, this article aims to raise the awareness and responsibility of drivers in regards to their own safety and welfare of the horse. It’s important not to compromise safety of the vehicle ie lightly built carriages to accommodate the horse.

Equine Services EAST COAST EQUINE Scott McGinness has been a horse vet for the past 30 years gaining experience in Australia, the USA and in the UK and recently he opened East Coast Equine a veterinary horse practice on the Sunshine Coast. East Coast Equine is a performance based, mobile equine veterinary practice located in Buderim but servicing the Sunshine Coast/ hinterland regions, Brisbane and the Gold Coast, the latter two by appointment only. The practice focuses on performance related issues with an emphasis on lameness diagnosis and treatment, especially relevant to the foot (equine podiatry). The latest veterinary equipment and complementary disciplines are available, namely a state of the art direct digital radiography system (the latest TRU-DR x-ray package from the States), diagnostic portable ultrasonography, dental hand and power floats, thermography (highlighting subtle regions of heat or cold which can identify acute or chronic lameness issues), chiropractic, acupuncture and physiotherapeutic options. In addition, the recent purchase of a pulsed energy replenishment unit complements the previously mentioned therapeutic tools available due to its capacity to regenerate normal cell function throughout the body, thus accelerating healing and optimising athletic ability. Practice hours are Monday through Friday from 8am until 5pm, in addition to Saturday and Sunday morning. The practice offers the latest technology combined with 30 years of international veterinary equine expertise, the aim being to restore, optimise and maintain athletic performance in the horse. He hopes to organise weekly clinics on the Sunshine and Gold Coast and in Brisbane where clients can bring horses to him with a qualified farrier in attendance so that he can address lameness and performance related issues relevant to the horse as a whole. East Coast Equine offers expertise and equipment to treat primary and secondary issues relevant to the feet, joints, back, soft tissues and teeth, in addition to checking saddle fit and balance which can play a significant role in performance related issues. For further information or to make an appointment, contact Scott on 0448-445588.

Australian Outback Spectacular wins Qld’s Top Tourism Award! Village Roadshow Theme Parks' $30 million show extravaganza Australian Outback Spectacular 2 'Heroes of the Light Horse' has been awarded the prestigious Major Tourist Attraction Award (Category One) at the 2010 Queensland Tourism Awards. The unique and exciting evening dinner show, filled with outback music, drama and action was originally launched in April 2006, with Australian Outback Spectacular 2 'Heroes of the Light Horse' launching in September 2009. Since opening its doors in April 2006, Australian Outback Spectacular has entertained over one million people from all over the world, with its celebration of Australian stock men and women at work and play and were honored to receive this

recognition. In addition to an insight into Outback culture, Australian Outback Spectacular 2 pays tribute to the link between our stockmen and the legendary Australian Light Horse. This year for the first time ever, Australian Outback Spectacular 2 will celebrate a traditional Aussie Bush Christmas as part of the show. Until December 24, the extravaganza will transform for the festive season to include traditional Christmas cheer featuring carols by the camp fire, a day at the Christmas Races and plum pudding. Australian Outback Spectacular was originally conceptualised by Village Roadshow Theme Parks Chairman John Menzies who identified the opportunity to promote Australian culture. The

show is set in an enclosed arena and features a one and a half hour show extravaganza with spectacular audio and visual effects. The production incorporates up to 40 horses, skilled stockmen and women and other favourite Australian animals, as well as a delicious three-course Australian BBQ dinner featuring a Bushman's swag salad, quality Australian beef, vegetables,

damper, pavlova and of course cold beer, wine and soft drink! Nightly from Tuesday to Saturday the giant Arena, which has a 1000 seat capacity, thunders with the hooves of Australian Stock Horses as the action packed performance unfolds. Bookings for the show are essential. Call 133 386 or visit MyFun.com.au.

Dealing with chronic coughers By DAVID LOVELL BVSc Redlands Veterinary Clinic Lameness, digestive tract disturbances, and diseases of the respiratory system account for by far the greatest majority of problems horses encounter. The chronic cougher can be very frustrating and extremely difficult to deal with. The horse is obviously in discomfort and the owner cannot ride the horse because exercise usually provokes an acute paroxysm of coughing. Most diseases start out as a relatively minor respiratory infection. Fortunately most horses quickly fight off the infection and return to normal. A number of them don't and progress into a state of chronic coughing. These horses can be very refractory to treatment. As with any problem, understanding what is going on is crucial to being able to do anything positive towards altering the outcome Coughing horses can be extremely frustrating to treat due to the complex factors involved in the cause of the disease. Therefore, a simple ‘cure’ can be difficult to obtain. The problem often begins with a sudden onset of coughing, nasal discharge and a variable temperature. The horse is usually sick - dull, depressed and off their food. This presentation is due to an acute infection either with a respiratory virus or a primary or secondary bacterial infection. This phase of the disease process can be treated

Chronic cough can be distressing and difficult to deal with. with specific antibacterial agents and a favourable response anticipated. Unfortunately, these acute episodes can often cause significant tissue damage to the mucosa lining the upper and lower respiratory tract. It is this damage that may perpetuate an acute infection into a chronic cough. In order to understand how this damage results in chronic coughing, it is necessary to look at the normal defence mechanisms of the respiratory tract. With every breath the horse takes, 8-12 litres of air passes through the nostrils, upper airways then into the lower airways and lungs. This air is contaminated with dust particles, pollen, environmental pollutants, fungal spores

(moulds) and bacteria. Naturally, these contaminants must be filtered and removed from the body before the air enters the lower airways. Given that the horse breathes at 16-20 times per minute, there is a large quantity of contaminants that must be removed. The normal horse has billions of tiny hairs (cilia) lining the internal surface of the airways. Coated with mucous, these act as a trap to catch, filter out and collect the tiny foreign particles inhaled. The cilia then expel the mucous and contained particles up the tract and into the throat using a wave-like motion. From the throat the mucous is either swallowed or expelled either through the mouth or the nostrils. However, should this filtration process fail, contaminants are carried into the lower airways with every breath and can establish infection or disease. Infectious agents multiply and cause disease in the lower respiratory tract. Contamination materials also act as a foreign body in the lower airways, irritating the tissues and provoking an intense inflammatory reaction. These factors result in constrictions of the lower airways and potentiate the chronic cough situation. The cough is the physical attempt by the animal to get rid of this discharge. There is also an immune component to the lower airway defence mechanism.  Continued page 23

Horseball takes off in Australia By COURTNEY LARARD It’s exhilarating, it’s precision on horseback and it’s new to Australia. Horse-ball was introduced to Australia in 2009 off the back of the sport’s enormous popularity throughout Europe. Horseball is a game played on horseback where a ball is handled and points are scored by shooting it through a high net (approximately 1.5m x 1.5m). The sport is like a combination of polo, rugby, and basketball. It is one of the ten disciplines officially recognized by the International Federation for Equestrian Sports. Taking off in Australia our foundation team was requested at the Sydney Royal Easter Show, Australian Stock Horse Nationals, Tamworth Equestrian Exhibition and Equitana, with the calendar filling fast for the 2011 season. In October the sport’s first

national titles held at the Tamworth Equestrian Exhibition, attracting teams from Sydney to Cubbaroo and prize money in excess of $5,500. The Australian title was taken out by Eaglehawk Angus Team Sam Halstead, Tom Trisley, Jack Halstead, Harry Vivers and Simon George. Mitch Anderson was crowned best male player and Grace Halstead named best female player. In conjunction Tamworth hosted Australia’s first international match with worldwide superstars flying in specifically to compete. Our Australian Team coached by the late Lachie Eliott comprised of Grant Biffin (captain), Mitchell Anderson, Matthew Birch, Ian Hodges, Alistar Schwager and Alex Willey went down two matches to one but the internationals were nothing but complimentary of the horse-

Start the New Year at the races

Australians shine at equestrian games

Experience a classic country race day at its finest in Wallabadah home of the oldest registered Australian racecourse. Every New Year's Day since 1852 (give or take a few cancellations due to rain), the course has hosted the Wallabadah Cup, the one and only race meet for the year. The 2011 race day program will include five races, with full local and interstate betting facilities available. Event organiser Gerard Smith described the event as a classic bush race meet that attracts crowds from all over the state. "Racegoers usually pack their own picnic lunch and make a full day of the event," he said. "It's a really family friendly day with a fan-

The Australian team has produced their best overall result at the World Equestrian Games in Kentucky, USA. The Australian Team recorded their best-ever overall performance in the disciplines of Dressage and Jumping, led by Brett Parbery with an Australian highest ever dressage score and placing, with a 76.350% and ninth place. The jumpers achieved their target by placing seventh in the team event and qualifying for the World Equestrian Games. Congratulations to Sharon Jarvis for winning two individual bronze medals in the ParaEquestrian competition. One of the main highlights of the event was Boyd Exell’s performance winning Australia’s first ever WEG Gold Medal for Australia in the Driving event. The eventing team had a disappointing event, however, Stuart Tinney showed again that he is a consistent performer and world class by finishing in eighth place. - EA

Eliminating the causes of coughing ď ą from page 17 This involves both a cellular defence mechanism and specific antibody production. The cellular defence consists of certain types of white blood cells that engulf the foreign particles and or infectious agents. Other white blood cells produce antibodies that combat foreign particles and infectious agents. Should the physical filtration and immune defences fail the net result is the development of chronic lower airway disease and chronic coughing. However, of more significance than an absence of immune reaction is the development of immune over - reaction or hypersensitivity. Many horses become sensitised to some of the particles inhaled including pollens, fungal spores and dust. They become allergic to the actual material deposited in their airways. The allergic reaction to the dust or pollens further results in an inflammatory reaction potentiates the coughing. The final problem in low airway inflammatory disease is the development of secondary bacterial infections in the material accumulating in the lower respiratory system. This infection continues to exacerbate the inflammation and coughing. Successful treatment of the coughing horse is extremely difficult and can only result from a combination of two factors: 1) Elimination of the causal factors 2) Repair of the body defence mechanisms Elimination of the causal factors is very difficult. Chronic coughing is rarely due to a primary infection. Therefore treatment with antibiotics will not cure the disease unless the other contributing factors are eliminated or controlled. The problem is that the horse is continually inhaling particles challenge the already damaged defence system. The best we can do is attempt to reduce the levels of contaminating material in the air. Therefore avoidance of dust is essential. This is extremely difficult during dry periods of the year as paddocks and work areas are

extremely dusty. Arenas should be sprayed with water before working the horse. The housing of the horse is very important and if the horse has to be confined, stables must be well ventilated. Ideally the horse should be kept outdoors. Similarly, enclosure in floats and trucks will increase exposure to airway contamination. Allowing the horse to stop and graze every couple of hours on long trips is recommended to allow clearance of airway contaminants. Feed material is also a common source of dust and fungal spores. Therefore the quality and type of feed must be considered. Feed should also be dampened. Feeding the horse on the ground and allowing the horse to graze pasture is a very important aid as stretching the neck downwards encourages drainage and expulsion of exudates and contaminants from the airways. All aspects of the horse's environment must be evaluated and attempts made to correct and eliminate possible sources of dust and pollutants. Thought should also be given to other possible sources of particulate material that the horse may be allergic to.

Once environmental factors have been considered, medical treatments for chronic coughing must be discussed. Appropriate antibiotic therapy is necessary in the initial stages to target the secondary bacterial infection present. As mentioned earlier if the inflammatory response is overlooked this will result in only temporary or no relief of symptoms. This results in a reduction in contamination and discharge present and creates a healthier environment in the lower airways. Treatment must continue long enough to allow proper healing to take place. It will only be successful if the body is able to repair the tissues. In most cases the time period may be prolonged and the course of treatment can be very expensive. 1) ANTIBIOTICS - Appropriate courses of antibiotics are necessary initially to control the secondary bacterial infection. 2) BRONCHODILATORS - These are drugs that relax the spasm of the smooth muscle in the walls of the lower airways and prevent constriction. The airways are opened up and there is better movement and elimination of inflammatory discharges. This relaxation also counteracts some of the local irritation in the tissues and reduces the inflammatory response. The best example of this mechanism of action is the use of ventolin for human asthmatics. 3) MUCOLYTICS - These drugs break down, liquefy, and dissolve the exudates and accumulated material and allow it to be expelled easily. 4) ANTI-INFLAMMATORIES - These drugs are very important as they temper the severity of the inflammatory response. The amount of discharge and reaction that occurs is reduced and eventually a more favourable environment for healing is created. They also counteract the effects of allergy. Treatment and management of horses with chronic coughs is, therefore, very difficult and the likelihood of an initial and complete cure is not high. Owners should contact their veterinarian for a thorough examination and evaluation of the horse.

WANTED - Ringmaster for Murwillumbah Show The Tweed River Agricultural Society Ltd appeals to the local horse fraternity to put forward someone to take over the running of the horse events in Centre Ring at the annual Murwillumbah Show. Ringmaster Peter McDonald has been involved with the show all his life and has devoted more than 20 years to the success of centre ring. Both he and wife Marissa have filled the ringmaster role for the last eight years straight. Peter and Marissa gave their notice to the Show Society two years ago but the Society has as yet been unable to find anyone willing to take on the task. Always providing well-qualified judges and a diverse program, Murwillumbah's is arguably one of the best ag show horse programs in South East Queensland and Northern NSW and is always well-supported by competitors. Peter was alarmed to have the secretary of the Show Society tell him that if no one volunteered to take on the job shortly, the Board will have to run the 2011 Murwillumbah Show without horse events in centre ring. While the show jumping program is capably run by Grant and Lisa Glasby and their wonderful team of helpers, the other horse events are currently in danger of being abandoned. If you feel you could assist, please contact the TRAS Secretary (02 6672 5507 or 0427 725 507), a member of the TRAS Board or Peter (02 6672 1884 or 0409 470 707). And the time to begin is NOW... although the 2010 Show is barely over it is time to begin inviting judges, sorting trophies and planning ring events for 2011.

Trainers Guide

Feature Trainer - John Downes be required to display his best effort. Now this is tough and don't forget the additional stresses of travelling and strange environments they have to work and sleep in. The modern horse is put under great stress. Will he handle this or hate it? Some riders have used drugs to achieve submission and calmness yet quiet acceptance should come from training and trust between horse and rider.

ARTICLE 6

The Polished Performance Recently I have attended a number of "A" class shows and in the ridden sections noticed a vast difference between horse and rider combinations. At first glance all the horses had their heads down and appeared to be working on the bit but closer scrutiny revealed many of the horses, although having their heads down, also showed signs of being worked in a false outline. These signs included: stiff backs, trailing legs and lack of impulsion or engagement. Other horses showed the benefits of correct training with soft, swinging backs, gentle acceptance of the rider's aids and good impulsion enabling the showcasing of the true beauty of the horse's movement thus working in harmony and unity with the rider. Now why does such a vast difference in training styles exist? I do not believe that riders, trainers and coaches intentionally train in a manner that is going to be unsuccessful or in many cases cruel, yet the eventual outcome is often not to the benefit of the horse. LACK OF KNOWLEDGE Podhajsky, Thiess or Steinbrecht never talked about moving the bit in the horse's mouth or moving the hands yet many people still do so. The use of the aids needs to be understood, applied not only at the correct moment, in balance with the horse and with sufficient determination and encouragement to achieve the desired result. Excessive force should not be used. We still constantly see nervous riders with stiff hands and harsh bits being used to slow a rushing horse. These factors only reinforce a lack of knowledge and consideration for the well-being of the horse.

be. Strength of character is essential to acquire and perfect new skills to achieve our ridden goals. IMPATIENCE In this modern world we have so many calls on the limited hours we have available each day. This can result in often preparing a horse hastily or even hurrying a ride. Unfortunately horses that are prepared hastily will fail to progress or perform well when under pressure. Correct basics take time, often years. A horse that can barely hold itself on the bit should not be doing flying changes. LACK OF A TRAINING PLAN Modern athletes work with coaches, psychologists and physiotherapists to get to the top in their chosen field. Are we as riders any different? I think of my horses and myself as athletes. I work hard on my fitness so as not to let my horses down or my horses so they won't let me down. I also work just as scientifically with my horses by using the best veterinarians, farriers and other horse professionals.

UNSUITABLE COMBINATION A horse must be the correct sized LACK OF CORRECTLY APPLIED mount for the rider. TECHNIQUE Too large a rider on too small horse Whether it be due to laziness, lack or vice versa will create the wrong of strength, age, lack of knowledge impression and will probably not or communication between instrucbe called in by the judge or mark tors and riders ie not explaining well. correctly or not insisting a half halt The temperament of both horse or parade is applied with the leg, and rider should also blend. seat and hands and not just hands. SUITABILITY For the intended discipline, pick a horse that catches your eye and hopefully it will catch the eye of the judge. If you are unsure what to look for take an experienced and successful friend or coach to help you in your selection. TRAINABILITY The horse must be able to be trained. Can he handle the rigours of the training schedule and show ring? Many shows have five or six classes in a row where a horse will

SOUNDNESS There is an old saying "sound of mind, sound of limb, sound of wind." An unsound horse is difficult to train. The use of pain killers to mask unsoundness is not only cheating, it is also cruel. At major shows we see horses that aren't 100% in mind, limb or wind. Be sure your horse is solid. Now all of these factors mentioned above will influence the end result, be it a quiet work out in the early morning light with just the sound of your horse's foot falls and his breathing complimenting the grace of a swinging canter or the champion ribbon at the next Royal. And most importantly go out and enjoy your next ride.

The Horse Report

Understand the ‘road map’ of the hoof By DAVID FARMILO (Accredited Master Farrier), Creeping Toes sounds like it might be a fungal growth or an alien invasion, however it is my terminology for a problem that is creeping into the world of hoof care. Creeping Toes answers a lot of questions when related to the long toe/low heel problems, and it would seem that the majority of us just don't recognize where the actual sole line should be at the front of the hoof. If you look at the cleaned out sole of the hoof that is due to be trimmed, and if you view it as a saucer held up and nearly full of water, the level there is an even water level line all around the edge. This describes where that junction of the cleaned out sole should meet the laminae/white line at the inside edge of the hoof wall, known as the true road map in the bottom of the hoof. However in the untrimmed hoof you will see that this line of sole/hoof wall junction appears to be lower along the sides of the sole and rises at the toe section and the heels, so it is giving the distorted impression that the sole has a curved plane towards the toe. If we attempt to level a hoof using this junction of the sole at the toe (see Pic 1) we have left the front of the hoof too high and it will also be too long. When this is repeated at each preparation the toes will creep out longer and longer. Many people mistakenly believe that the side walls of the hoof are normally weaker or thinner and that the toe wall is

thicker; however in the correctly balanced hoof which has been maintained regularly there is an even thickness of the hoof wall from heel to heel and it never breaks away at the sides. This is how this whole problem of the creeping toes evolves and it is inherently linked to the long toe/low heel syndrome. In order to find the correct height of the hoof wall at the toe, that piece of sole callous (see Pic 2) must be removed to show that the true line of the hoof/sole junction is level. (see Pic 3) The hoof wall may then be trimmed to either unshod or shoe fitting height, then to achieve the correct toe length the hoof must be rasped to an even thickness outside the white line, and the heels should then be adjusted to obtain a level ground bearing surface of the hoof wall. The Creeping Toe Syndrome is the cause of laminitis in the front section and low or underrun heels; it is also the cause of weak side walls because the long toe pulls forwards and stretches the density of the hoof thickness at the sides, it also creates hoof related back strain as the long toes cause a delayed breakover of the front hooves. Correcting the toes puts all of these things back to into balance and achieves a correct hoof/pastern angle (see Pic 4). Take the time to identify the true road map in the bottom of the hoof - it is important for the horse, and the shoes will fit better. David Farmilo Oakbank, SA Ph 0418-835-186 or email david@horsefarrier.com.

Picture 1 - The actual sole line of the hoof should be of the front. Incorrect trimming can result based on an untrimmed hoof’s sole/hoof wall junction can result in the front of the hoof being too high and it will also be too long.

Picture 2 - In order to find the correct height of the hoof wall at the toe, that piece of sole callous must be removed to show that the true line of the hoof/sole junction is level.
