BE PRACTICE-READY WHEN YOU GRADUATE

Through experiential learning and professional formation opportunities, Regent Law combines traditional legal study with hands-on training and ethical formation in the context of a Christian worldview. Our graduates enter the legal field as fully integrated lawyers with a thorough knowledge of the law, the skills to put their knowledge to use, and the personal wellness necessary to succeed.

TOOLS FOR SUCCESS

Mentorship | Receive mentoring from full-time faculty in the context of academic advising, as well as in other mentoring relationships. You also may be matched with a lawyer or judge in the state where you intend to practice or in your preferred practice area.

Practice-Skills Classes | More than one-third of the courses offered in the law school focus on providing you the skills you need to practice law. From drafting pleadings and appellate briefs to conducting discovery and negotiating settlements to drafting contracts and estate plans, Regent Law can train you in the skills you need to be a practicing attorney in your preferred field.

Internships & Externships | Apply your knowledge and develop the skills needed in a legal environment under the supervision of a practicing attorney or judge. Yearlong paid and unpaid internships with judges, firms, and government offices are plentiful. You may also secure externships for class credit.

Apprenticeships | Work an entire semester and earn up to 10 credits in the place you want to practice to help you transition to being a practicing attorney.

EXPERIENTIAL-LEARNING PARTNERSHIPS

Through Regent Law’s civil practice clinic, students provide real and practical pro bono services to the low-income population of Hampton Roads. The clinic, located in downtown Norfolk, across from the City of Norfolk Courthouse, has established partnerships with referring organizations and agencies in the service area. Partners include the Legal Aid Society of Eastern Virginia, Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters, The Genieve Shelter, and the Norfolk Redevelopment and Housing Authority.

National Right To Work Practicum | Assist with litigation of First Amendment cases before the U.S. Supreme Court.

Child Advocacy Practicum | Gain practical legal experience by working on cases and legislation relating to children.

Human Trafficking Clinic | Assist human trafficking survivors in getting their criminal records expunged.

Immigration Practicum | Earn academic credit working at a local immigration firm.

A Third-Year Practice Certificate | Virginia allows students to earn this certificate whereby 3Ls can practice law under the supervision of an attorney. Students can earn credit and work at firms, prosecutors’ and public defenders’ offices, governmental agencies, etc. and represent real clients

John Ashcroft, J.D.

Distinguished Professor and Former Attorney General of the United States: J.D., University of Chicago School of Law

Former U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft imparts invaluable lessons of leadership to his students while emphasizing the role of faith in decision-making. He teaches from experience. When terrorists attacked the United States on September 11, 2001, Ashcroft helped chart an effective legal response to the attacks and oversaw a remarkable period of national safety and security afterward.

Erin Morrow Hawley

Associate Professor of Constitutional Law J.D., Yale Law School

Hawley is a former associate professor of law at the University of Missouri. She serves as senior counsel to the appellate team at Alliance Defending Freedom and senior legal fellow at the Independent Women’s Forum. Hawley is a former law clerk to U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice John G. Roberts. She has also practiced appellate law at Kirkland and Ellis LLP, Bancroft LLP, and King & Spalding LLP. Hawley is frequently called upon for legal commentary in media outlets like World Magazine, USA Today, Fox News, the Washington Examiner, the Legal Times, and The Hill.

Jeffrey A. Brauch, J.D.

Associate Dean for Faculty Development & Intellectual Life, Executive Director, Center for Global Justice®: University of Wisconsin, Madison; J.D., University of Chicago Law School

Brauch joined the Regent Law faculty in 1994, teaching Foundations of Law, International Human Rights, International Religious Freedom, Torts, and other courses. Brauch was Dean of Regent Law from 2000-2015, and is now the executive director of Regent’s Center for Global Justice®, an organization he helped pioneer. Brauch also served as a law clerk for Justice William Callow of the Wisconsin Supreme Court and worked as an associate with Milwaukee law firm Quarles & Brady, specializing in commercial litigation.

As just one example, Professor James Duane’s 5th Amendment lecture, “Don’t Talk to the Police,” has more than 18 million views on YouTube. American law is now the common currency of business transactions worldwide, influencing law, policy, and government around the globe. Regent Law’s LL.M. in American Legal Studies program trains attorneys from other countries in American law.

Designed for graduates of accredited institutions outside the United States who have already earned a J.D.-equivalent law degree.

Enjoy standard courses in American law, as well as courses in corporate, commercial, and transactional law; constitutional law; public law; alternative dispute resolution; intellectual property law; family law; and criminal law and procedure.

The American Center for Law and Justice (ACLJ) is a premier national public interest law firm specializing in constitutional law and the defense of religious and civil liberties. Housed on campus, the ACLJ works closely with Regent Law and its centers. This close relationship provides students with extraordinary opportunities to participate in historic cases. It also allows students a competitive opportunity to apply for paid and unpaid positions assisting ACLJ attorneys.

Chief Counsel Jay Sekulow, J.D., Ph.D., brings nationally recognized expertise to the Regent Law faculty and provides students with unparalleled opportunities to contribute to the most important legal cases of our time.

In Westside School District v. Mergens, Sekulow successfully cleared the way for public school students to form Bible clubs and religious organizations on their school campuses.

In Lamb’s Chapel v. Center Moriches School District, he defended the free speech rights of religious groups, ensuring that they be treated equally regarding the use of public facilities.

In Pleasant Grove City v. Summum, Sekulow’s argument resulted in a unanimous (9-0) First Amendment decision affirming the right of governments to accept permanent monuments of their choosing — including Ten Commandments monuments — in public parks. aclj.org

CENTER FOR ETHICAL FORMATION & LEGAL EDUCATION REFORM

The Center for Ethical Formation & Legal Education Reform helps develop the professional identity of our students. The center’s goal is to produce lawyers who understand the nature and purpose of the legal profession and are committed to the ethical practice of law.

Faculty publish and present on professional identity formation nationwide. Regent Law is part of the Educating Tomorrow’s Lawyers consortium, which is at the forefront of moral formation in the legal profession.

ROBERTSON CENTER FOR CONSTITUTIONAL LAW

The Robertson Center for Constitutional Law seeks to advance first principles in constitutional law, including textualism, freedom of speech, separation of powers, federalism, judicial modesty, and religious liberty.

The center promotes these ideas in the academy, the courts, and with the American people. It will publish white papers and scholarly articles; host distinguished scholars, judges, and attorneys; advise foreign governments; and support like-minded organizations defending first principles in our courts.

On June 24, 2022, the United States Supreme Court issued its decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, which overruled two major abortion cases; Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood v. Casey. The Robertson Center for Constitutional Law collaborated with the Christian Legal Society to file an important friend-of-the-court brief in support of the prevailing party. The Center’s brief argued that the Court should overrule Roe and Casey and allow states to craft abortion policy through the democratic process. The Court agreed.

In doing all of this work, the Robertson Center is committed to training the next generation of lawyers and leaders to defend our Constitution.

CENTER FOR GLOBAL JUSTICE

The Center for Global Justice equips students to use the law to seek justice for the oppressed and supports those already engaged in such advocacy. Students interested in the rule of law, international law, and human rights law have the opportunity to do hands-on legal research and advocacy internships while being trained as advocates.

Academic Preparation | Global justice related courses in our curriculum include International Human Rights, Trafficking in Persons, International Development & the Rule of Law, and International Criminal Law. Students also learn through special events, symposia, and hands-on research and brief-writing projects done in collaboration with legal organizations around the world. Since 2010, 212 Center for Global Justice interns and 165 student staff members have contributed over 70,000 hours of pro bono work (estimated value: $5 million in legal work).

Internship Program | Select students receive funded internships and are placed with legal organizations, such as the International Justice Mission and Advocates International, to combat human trafficking and other human rights abuses and to secure religious liberty. Interns have served 68 organizations in 14 states and 20 countries.

Fellowship Program | Recent Regent Law graduates may apply for a Center for Global Justice human rights fellowship, which provides our graduates with a full year of funding to work with partner organizations. Created in 2017, this program provides new graduates with invaluable legal experience doing work on behalf of the poor and oppressed. Our first four fellows completed 7,680 hours of pro bono legal work for the International Justice Mission and the Office of the Directorate of Public Prosecutions in Uganda.
