Nancy is in Year 4 this year so her family has spent a good deal of money preparing for the year ahead - paying school fees, buying uniforms, stationery and a laptop. The old textbook list is gone, instead it is mandatory for Nancy to have a laptop. A laptop is a large investment for a 10-year-old, costing anywhere from $400 to $1200. But a digital education is the way of the future. So far it has cost $4,000 in school fees and resources for Nancy to attend a catholic primary school in 2019. A new international high school has opened in Mawson Lakes linked with the University of South Australia. This month's cover shows the school's principal Steve Bousfield and the staff. Read about the school on page 11 and see how much it will cost for an education there, and how it compares with fees at other schools in Adelaide. Urban heat Heat mapping this summer showed that Salisbury was the hottest council area. Parafield was the hottest spot for daytime heat with a temperature of 40.5C, followed by Edinburgh at 39.9C and Dry Creek at 39.7C The report by the Environment and Water Department is accessible to the public so you can drill down through the data and find your address. Suburbs with lots of tree cover had the coolest temperatures. The report's recommendations include planting more trees, painting road surfaces in lighter colours, and putting light coloured roofs on new buildings. We are fortunate in Mawson Lakes to have many trees, but they need protection from the heat. If you have a tree near you look after it. Give it a good soak every couple of weeks when it's hot and put some mulch around it. - Carmen Kazy Overdevelopment Sandy Jansen complains about overdevelopment in the Cove in MLL/Feb. This is Renewal SA Land sold now to recover the $900M debt of Renewal SA. If people read the property signs on the site they would know that the property was always zoned for development. - Steve Townhouse development in Douglas Drive The comment in MLL/Feb about lakeside development in Douglas Drive fails to mention that this land has always been zoned for redevelopment that does not require consultation with other landowners. Council put many restrictions on the design of this block and the 18 townhouses will have off street parking as well as visitor parking. - Stuart From floods to drought I spent January in Queensland where the cyclones battered the coast and the rivers were flooding. Water everywhere. In February we returned to Mawson Lakes where the temperatures were extreme, the creeks and pools were dry and my neighbours told me about the heatwave conditions they had endured. Headlines screamed lack of water in the Murray. Why can’t the federal government and state governments work together to bring 4

Invest in a water diversion scheme and if the Aussie workers won’t work on it, bring in the immigrants as they did with the Snowy Mountains Scheme. - Hilary Preparing for climate change We need to prepare for climate change. Stop debating it and start preparing for it. Begin by diverting surplus water from the flooding north to inland regions and other dry river systems. This would be an unbelievable benefit to Australia and something of real global significance. - Stella Chiplin Parking opposite another vehicle Further to your comment in MLL/Feb about illegal parking, it is illegal to park opposite another vehicle on a narrow road so that traffic is inhibited. It happens all the time in our narrow street in ML making it difficult for cars to get past and for residents to get out of their garage, and unsafe for people using the footpath. - Australian Road Rule 208
Alternative to fireworks Fireworks are noisy air polluters, a fire hazard and terrifying to many. In progressive thinking communities fireworks are being replaced with laser light shows beamed into the air with choreographed music. It’s spectacular, creative, environmentally sensitive and safe for the delicate ears of babes and animals. We should try it here in Salisbury and start a trend. - Kjell Sorum Finding a decent real estate agent The real estate feature in MLL/Jan was relevant to me because I want to sell my house in Mawson Lakes, so I called some of the agents in the magazine. What a horrible experience.
I discovered rude, arrogant and dishonest men who overcharge and hide information and costs. After a period of trauma, I found a woman agent outside Mawson Lakes (see below) and transferred my business. That’s when the intimidating threats and abuse from the local guys started. My advice is to shop around, seek info from other buyers and sellers in Mawson Lakes, read and understand the agent’s contract with you, know your rights as a seller and compare the prices that agents charge which vary significantly. - Fiona

Annoyance calls Your warning about annoying scams and digital advertising (MLL/Oct) prompted me to call Telstra to block unwanted overseas calls. There was peace for a while but the scammers are clever and use sophisticated technology to invade Australian networks. These are gingival and dental trauma. Chronic gingival trauma is more commonly found with lip piercings and has the appearance of a localised loss of gum tissue (an exposed root). This is a reflection not just of the loss of skin (the ‘gum’) around the tooth but also the underlying bony support of the tooth. This is usually permanent and given lip piercings are at the front of the mouth this can create a permanent cosmetic issue when smiling.

New international high school opens in Mawson Lakes Teachers from around the world arrived in Mawson Lakes last month to greet students coming into Years 10, 11 and 12 at the new international high school in Mawson Lakes. Maple Leaf School – University of South Australia has started right in the centre of UniSA with refurbished classrooms in the university library building. Founding principal Steve Bousfield, former head of Westminster School at Marion, said the year started with 30 students and has plenty of room to expand with access to outstanding facilities within the university. "Education is becoming globalised," said Mr Bousfield.
"We live in a networked world where the old boundaries are blurring. There is a widening, deepening and speeding up of worldwide connections as a result of technology. Interactions and exchanges that were once impossible are now everyday activities."

Victoria Hisey (pictured) had been teaching at a Maple Leaf School in China for several years when the opportunity to transfer to Australia came up. "I quickly put my name forward to teach English and The Arts at the new bilingual school. It’s a cultural journey for me, as well as our students", she said. Maple Leaf was started 23 years ago by Chinese businessman Dr Sherman Jen who is the present chairman and chief executive officer of MAple Leaf Education. He has affiliations with universities in Vancouver and China and his education system is the largest operator of international schools in China. The EnglishMandarin bilingual school with an Australian curriculum is the first Maple Leaf School to open in Australia. "This is an exciting project," said Mr Bousfield. "Australia is becoming more attractive to overseas students now that we have direct flights between Adelaide and China. We share a similar time zone so we can have real time connections. UniSA is regarded as one of Australia’s top universities with high educational standards, an international outlook and an enterprising spirit, so this enterprise is an excellent union."

Rush for homes in school zones Parents are racing to buy homes in Adelaide's sought-after school zones as stricter enrolment caps are put in place by the government, according to the Real Estate Institute of Australia. REIA says that many parents base their decision to buy a house on the location of the school they want to get into. Parents are prepared to pay more for houses to get the education they want. This is the case in Mawson Lakes Mawson Lakes Public School is a zoned school. Its Capacity Management Plan for 2019 gives priority to applications from parents living inside the school zone and then the distance of the child’s residence from the school. You can see the enrolment map on the school’s website. Not all areas of Mawson Lakes are included.

Mawson Lakes Primary School has a restricted intake zone. See the school website for an intake map. Public primary schools have one intake date, this means if your child turns five BEFORE 1st May they can start primary school on the first day of Term One of that year. If your child turns five on or AFTER 1st May they can start primary school on the first day of Term One of the following year.

Discovering a love for electronics For youngsters who love flight, space and technology, the Australian Air League at Parafield Airport is an exciting adventure. Bier aged 15, started at AAL as a cadet when he was 8 and worked his way up to leading cadet, then corporal and now seargent. At the Award Ceremony held at The Mawson Centre in December, Bier received the trophy for Education Excellence.
"I discovered a love for electronics and engineering at AAL and have built an FM radio, learnt how to signal with flags and talk in morse code." Last year Bier talked to an astronaut in space, made model planes and rode in a hovercraft. His favourite activity was a leadership training weekend in Sydney.

Getting into high school via the IGNITE Program Hi everyone This year I started high school having finished Year 7 at Mawson Lakes Primary School in 2018. If you are academically able there are some exceptionally good government high schools in Adelaide, however, you must live in the zone of that school to be able to enrol. Fortunately, there is an exception that may get you into the school of your choice regardless of where you live. This exception comes in the form of an academic test. There are three types of tests. For private schools, there are the scholarship tests for students with high academic ability or those facing hardship. For those wanting to go into a government high school there are high school entry tests. Then there are specialist tests, such as IGNITE. The IGNITE test not only gets you into one of the three top ranked government schools, but the top 25 students can do an extended course, finishing years 8, 9 and 10 in two years. However, these tests are extremely challenging. For many people, it’s best to start preparing a couple of years earlier, so that you are academically ready. Fortunately, there are many tuitions that specialize in these tests, such as Pre-Uni, Tuition Works and online subscriptions. Teen Talk by Alexa Tournament Of Minds Hi, my name is Alexandra, I’m 12 and I live in Mawson Lakes and I have participated in Tournament Of Minds for two years now. Tournament Of Minds is a problem solving program designed to enhance the potential in youth. It was dark in my kennel because the lightbulb had blown, so I asked my doggie friends if they could replace it. Here’s what they said: Golden Retriever: The sun is shining, the day is young, we’ve got our whole day ahead of us, and you’re inside worrying about a lightbulb? Dachshund: Sorry, can't reach that high! Shihtzu: Oh, dah-ling, let the staff do it. Yorkshire Terrier: I'm curious. I’ll come and have a look. Rottweiller: Go ahead - try and make me. Labrador: Oh, me, me! Pleeeze Nigella, let me change your lightbulb. Can I? Can I? Cocker Spaniel: Let the labrador do it. You can feed me while he’s busy. Toy poodle: Why do you need a lightbulb? Just pee on the carpet in the dark. Doberman: While it’s dark, I’ll guard your kennel. Mastiff: Toughen up Nigella. Mastiffs are not afraid of the dark. Greyhound: Does it move? Malamute: Seriously Nigella? Ask a border collie to do it. German Shepherd: Oh sweetie, I’ll pace around the perimeter to protect you. Chihuahua: Yo quiero Taco Bulb. Beautiful Garden Award Father inspires garden Susan's father was an Englishman with a pretty English garden. He loved to stand with a hose and water each evening. "This is where I inherited my love of gardening and I have planted some Queen Elizabeth roses in memory of him," said Susan Mafrici who has lived in Mawson Lakes for 17 years. In hot weather, Susan’s small front yard at 248 Mawson Lakes Boulevard is a blaze of colour. A profusion of multicoloured petunias carpet the ground and a terrace of delicate roses form a backdrop. Paved steps edged with a lillypilly hedge separate the driveway from the garden and provide a protective wind break.
The elegant, sparkling clean house presents a beautiful face to the street worthy of the many compliments it receives. To keep her garden healthy, Susan applies two main ingredients - fertiliser and mulch. "I like pea straw because it breaks down easily, then as it decomposes I dig it in. My fertilisers are Neutrog Sudden Impact which I alternate with Black Marvel. Every few weeks I scatter the fertiliser over the garden and I water with a hand-held hose just like my dad used to do."

Return Gossip Mavis, the town gossip and selfappointed protector of morals, was always peeking out her window and sticking her nose in other people's business. But the puritanical monitor of sobriety bit off more than she bargained for when she pulled up Harry, a new arrival in the town. She tackled him about parking his ute in front of the pub for several hours. She told him (and several others) that everyone who saw the ute there would know what he was up to. Harry, a man of calm disposition and few words, stared at her in disbelief. He didn’t say anything and walked quietly away. Later that evening Harry drove his ute to Mavis’s place and parked under the street light, right in front of her house in Main Street. He walked home . . . and left his car there all night.
