Mad March Adelaide calls this month “Mad March” because all within one month, we have a supercar road race, a world music festival, a horse-racing cup and an international arts festival. It’s an extravaganza of civic entertainment, so MLL asked the people on the street what they will be doing in Mad March. See page 5.

When the neighbours built a 2-storey home next door to John’s house they failed to put frosted windows on the side of their house that looked into John’s property. John spoke to the owner and the builder who dismissed his complaints so he went to the council, then the police, but his protests went nowhere. So he came up with his own solution. He took off his clothes and began to stride nude around his yard. After six days of nude sweeping, gutter cleaning, roof repairs, house painting, gardening and BBQing the neighbours put frosted glass on their windows!

And there’s a different sort of madness reflected in Community Comments this month. People are mad about our public service. A lot of us in Mawson Lakes are very unhappy about the way Australia Post is operating, with declining service, rising costs and no PO. Hearing that the CEO of Australia Post receives a salary of $5.6 million a year really rubs salt into this wound.

Autumn is a good time to get the house, the car and the body-beautiful in shape. To make it easy to select local trade and service providers MLL has produced a special Trades and Services Liftout in this issue. Pull it from the centre and keep it so next time you need a specialist you can contact business people who live and/or work in Mawson Lakes.

But madness comes in many forms and I loved the following story from a reader.

Fake news I like the way the editor scours the dictionaries for new words and gives them to us in MLL. Donald Trump has made the words "fake news" famous in the US and it has arrived in Australia’s Macquarie Dictionary as the word for 2016. "Fake news" refers to disinformation and hoaxes published on websites for political purposes. Another new word I like is "shoefiti" - the practice of throwing shoes over powerlines. - Laura Withers, The Sanctuary Shampoo ripoff The other day I watched a woman selecting a bottle of shampoo from the shelf in Woolworths. Prices ranged from $5 to $16. I’m an industrial chemist so I know that all shampoos contain the same cleaning ingredients. The more expensive products add fragrances and thickeners because people associate a thicker liquid with higher quality. Good marketing enticed her to buy the most expensive product. But ladies, be aware of what you pay for. - David Post-work economy Optus has left Mawson Lakes and hundreds of jobs have been lost as a result. It’s bad news for the North but just another sign of the times. Social scientists say the post-work economy, where technology replaces humans, is coming at an unprecedented rate. Driverless vehicles are set to make millions of trucks and taxi drivers redundant, and automated fast-food services will shut off a key job sector. Digital communications means it's hard to find a human voice at the end of the line. As artificial intelligence takes over the complex tasks once performed by human brains, I'm nervous that I may find myself out of work. - Eggie Goldlyne Noses in the trough So a politician gets the sack for rorting the system, but, hey, many people do it in one form or another as a perk of their job. Professionals attend conferences in desirable international locations, not so much for information, but because it’s a great place to take a holiday, catch up with colleagues, maybe take the spouse and family, and claim it as a tax deduction. Rorting the system is a cultural thing in Australia. - David Yunta 4

Council representative for Mawson Lakes resigns When Brad Vermeer was elected in 2010 as a Council member to Salisbury Council to represent the Levels Ward (that includes Mawson Lakes) he was one of the youngest members to serve. After 6 years on Council, Brad has resigned from local government to take up a position with the Northern Territory opposition leader as a senior policy adviser. He will be based in Darwin’s Parliament House. MLL wishes Brad the very best as he pursues his career in politics. His departure will force a by-election about April. If you are interested in joining the City of Salisbury Council as a representative of the Levels Ward, contact 8406 8222 for a nomination form.

Shearwater Lake Has anyone else noticed that the quality of water in Shearwater Lake has deteriorated? We have lived around the Shearwater Lake for several years but lately have seen more grass and other rubbish collecting in the lake. We are grateful council contractors regularly cut the grassed areas around the lake and park but disappointed that grass clippings and other debris is ending up in the lake. - Christian, Shearwater Local promotion I need repairs so I'm looking forward to the Trades Liftout. I like to support local. MLL you are awesome and do a fantastic job promoting new and established local businesses. - Cherie Westwater

Postal non-delivery A christmas card sent from Norway on 19 December did not arrive in my letterbox until 8 February. That's more than 7 weeks for a simple delivery. The once-fine reputation of Australia Post has plummeted while the salary of the CEO continues to soar. What’s going on here? Police inaction A car has been parked outside my property for more than 9 weeks. It has not moved, is dirty and growing cobwebs and is taking up a parking space in an active street where parking is scarce. I rang Salisbury Council and they said they no longer handle such matters. I was advised to contact Police, so I rang Salisbury Police Station. This was Tuesday about 3.30pm. The phone rang out. I called back on Friday about midday - no answer. I tried again on Sat only to get a recorded message that the police station is only open 9 to 5 weekdays. So the following week I called back on Tuesday afternoon. Still no answer. I then called 141333, got an answer and was told if the station is busy they do not answer calls. Whatever is happening to our public service? - Naomi Rent-free deal Adelaide City Council is considering providing free rent spaces for start-up businesses in North Adelaide to bring life back into quiet shopping strips, for example Melbourne St where the vacancy rate is as high as one empty shop in 5. Adelaide City Council is looking at the model by Renew Adelaide that works with landlords to provide 30-day-rent-free leases. We desperately need the same thing in Mawson Lakes to tackle the high vacancy rates and bring new and innovative enterprise to our commercial precinct. - Raymond Barr

Smart Homes of the future An automated family home in Baird Street is an example of the smart home of the future. This is the residence of technology innovator and entrepreneur Anup Raghavan, who uses a small ‘Smart Hub’ to dim the lights, draw the blinds, turn on music, open the garage door, switch off the TV, and, oh yes, turn on the sprinklers. That’s him on the cover of MLL in his home in Mawson Lakes, and the little device that helps him turn his home into a ‘smart home’ is B.One Hub, the world’s most advanced and sophisticated Home Automation Smart Hub. "If I’m out in the car and I think, did the kids lock the front doors and turn off the aircon before they left for school, I can quickly check it on my smartphone and secure the house from anywhere. Then on the way home I can prepare the house by turning on the aircon in advance and setting the oven to the right temperature, all with my smart phone." Anup who owns The Light Factory says that automation through an electronic hub like B.One Hub, connected to a broad range of devices is the way of the future. New homes will be wired with sensors and old homes can have them fitted and Anup and his team can show you how accessible and affordable it is. This Mawson Lakes resident’s company has bagged the distribution rights for B.One Hub, an American product, for Australia and New Zealand. Anup is keen to introduce home automation at an affordable price, making it accessible to the average Aussie household. "Once you know how to do it, it’s easy, and best of all there are huge savings in turning power off when not needed." Anup estimates that living in an automated house saves him at least $3 per day by turning off standby. "Think what this would add up to in a big office building, or more widely, in a Smart City." “No longer do we need to take up precious time with mundane tasks around the house or in the office when a smart hub and wireless technology can do it for us. Contact The Light Factory and ask about their Do-It-Yourself package or arrange for one of their electricians to install it all for you and give you a lesson on how it works. See advertisement for B One Hub to the right and The Light Factory on page 19. 6

I am applying for finance and want to check my credit history. What can I do?

A

Applying for finance can be a daunting experience, especially if your credit history is poor. There are a number of financial and other institutions that are able to contribute towards your credit history. This includes loan and credit providers, utility companies (electricity, gas, telephone, etc), rental agencies and so on. This may also include public authorities such as the Courts. There is also the increasing prospect of identity theft, where loan and credit applications are made in your name illegally by someone else. Fortunately in most cases, you can obtain a free copy of your credit report to check that information. Among other things, your credit

report will show: 1. Your personal details; 2. Previous loan or credit applications; 3. Loans or overdue debts; 4. Whether you have been declared bankrupt; and 5. Any Court judgments recorded against you. Although many of these matters are updated automatically, a Court judgment can be overlooked and appear on your report as outstanding even after it has been repaid or set aside. This may prevent you from being able to obtain finance in an otherwise successful application.

Meet Adrian Mark one of our team of lawyers who has special experience with Commercial / Civil Litigation

written approval of the other party, or a copy of the order of the Court (as the case may be), and forwarding that onto the credit reporting agency requesting your history be updated. In some cases, a Court action will need to be formally discontinued before your details will be properly updated.

Small Business Be wary of retail and commercial leases Small businesses are the backbone of the SA economy and key drivers of employment and growth according to Small Business Commissioner John Chapman who was talking to small business owners in Mawson Lakes last month. John said the SA government is so committed to assisting small business that in 2012 it appointed a Small Business Commissioner with an office to help solve disputes between small businesses and local and state government bodies. "My office handles 3,000 small business disputes a year, giving advice, mediating and keeping businesses out of court. We deal with disputes ranging from $139 to $4 million." The office is an independent statutory body. It also lobbies government on behalf of small business and instructs them on problems facing small business owners.

The Commissioner administers the Retail and Commercial Leases Act and John said that more than fifty percent of the work done by his office concerns disputes over leases for commercial premises. "A lease is a legal contract and it can result in a dangerous pathway for the inexperienced and the unwary, so my advice is to

examine a lease carefully, ask questions and take legal advice before you sign." Under the Act a retail shop lease must be for a minimum of 5 years. If the business folds, the landlord is still entitled to rent. There are many issues to consider in addition to rent, such as lease preparation costs, repairs and maintenance costs, alterations, insurance, rent increases, rent arrears, end of lease, condition reports, relocation . . . and a host of other hidden issues for the unwary. John said that leasing a business premises is a very large and complex commitment full of rights and responsibilities. He directed the audience to the Leasing Guide put out by his office. MAWSON LAKES TRADERS GROUP A new connection has formed in Mawson Lakes called the Mawson Lakes Traders Group. The aim of the group is to foster local business connection, social interaction and networking and look for solutions to the issues facing businesses in Mawson Lakes. Guest speaker at the February meeting was John Chapman the SA Small Business Commissioner who talked about small business issues such as alternative dispute resolution, retail and commercial lease, act responsibilities, unfair contract terms and late payment of debt. John explained how the Small Business Centre can help and advise small business owners trying to navigate legislation and help resolve business to business disputes. He advocates for small business and works to dissolve disputes outside of court through mediation and getting people to sit down and talk about issues before they get out of hand, nasty and spill over into the court system. The Mawson Lakes Traders Group hold regular meetings in Mawson Lakes in Technology Park and is open to all those living, working or operating in the local areas. Your Mawson Lakes Living Guide to Local

Trades & Services

Mawson Lakes Living is often contacted by residents looking for LOCAL trade and service providers, so we thought it would be helpful to our readers if we compiled a Trades and Services Liftout to tell you who to call. People tell me they want to support local business, so firstly they look in MLL and if they can’t find a supplier there they go elsewhere.

Local who loves house painting A facelift for a home in Mawson Lakes always brings joy to house painter Dylan Macnamara. He says that when the owners admire the modern makeover he feels fantastic. Dylan who is the owner of Mawson Lakes Painting says that sun damage is a massive problem in Mawson Lakes. "The sun takes the oils and nutrients out of paint so a house should be painted every few years to keep it in good condition." A vocational course at Salisbury High School called Doorways 2 Construction gave Dylan the opportunity to try different trades and he recognised that painting was the business for him. See page 16. "Seventy percent of my customers come from my advertisement in Mawson Lakes Living, and then when I do a job, the neighbours come over and ask if I will paint their house too!" "Leave it better than you found it" is the motto that Dylan works by, so the job goes beyond rolling on paint. "I spend 25 percent of my time

preparing the house by cleaning surfaces, filling holes and cracks and attending to small repairs. Then when the job is finished I make sure that everything is clean and neat. That’s the sign of a proud tradie." Ed

Doorways 2 Construction

BEFORE

Young people who would like to work in the trades industry can start a program in Year 10 at selected schools called Doorways 2 Construction (D2C) which is designed to teach skills in the construction industry such as demolition, carpentry, bricklaying, plastering, painting and decorating, plumbing and electrical. At Salisbury High School the vocational program runs one day per week. Students work offsite renovating a HousingSA house to gain practical skills and complete their Certificate 1 in Construction. They also undertake 4 weeks of work placement.

AFTER

In Years 11 and 12 they can continue to gain a Certificate 3 where they work predominantly in the school’s trade centre learning about tools and equipment, reading plans, site layout and advanced trade skills. This is a standout example of collaboration between industry and government that takes students into jobs and apprenticeships.

Services in Mawson Lakes There’s no need to travel to the city for professional services - they are right here doctors, dentists, eye specialists and other health and fitness services. There are lawyers, accountants, finance brokers, architects, security firms, landscapers, business advisors and more. Sometimes they are a bit hard to find so we invited owners and operators to put their contact details in the Services Liftout to assist you to do business locally. Mardi Edwards is a podiatrist on the second floor of the Specialist Centre in Main Street. Each month she writes a column for Mawson Lakes Living which puts the focus firmly on our feet - a part of our body we often neglect but which Mardi says has 26 bones which makes up one quarter of the bones in our body. Don’t miss her popular column each month. You can see her top "foot facts" on page 10 of this issue. How’s your child coping at school? They’ve been back at school a few weeks now. New teacher, classroom, environment! Some children come home enthusiastic, chatty, keen to do homework and ready for school the next day. Others may be quiet, tired and disengaged. They appear “switched off”. Some may show signs of anxiety, depression or anger and become oppositional, not wanting to go to school again. What’s happening? Difficulty in a new friendship group? Bullies? Uncomfortable in class? Maybe feeling they are not doing as well as their friends? What to do? Your first impulse may be to ask direct questions, to “get the facts” and “fix it”. In an emergency, this may be the best thing. You may find an indirect technique, such as asking your child to draw something about school, friends or “something that happened today”, useful when talking about the drawing. You can look at comments or scores in their books. Some children will talk more after “play fighting” or watching a program together, which can lead to interesting discussions.

Should you talk to someone else? Motor Vehicle Servicing That Sav Whether a social issue or academic, first talk to their teacher. Is thereOil anything ChangeXpress Driveobvious? Are you healthy and happy? If you want to make a change, DO IT! This may be hard but if you are disciplined and determined and set a time each day for your physical health you can achieve your goals. START SLOW I would suggest to start off with 10 minutes of exercise every day and slowly increase the amount until you reach 30 minutes a day. DRINKING ENOUGH WATER? Water is important whilst doing fitness and in your everyday life. The amount of water a person should consume daily should be about two litres a day. It may sound like a lot but when you exercise you need to drink more water.

TAHLIA'S TOP TIP My favourite tip to keeping fit is to make sure you enjoy life so much that you do three belly laughs a day - you will not only be happy, but your core will be working out! SURROUND YOURSELF WITH POSITIVE PEOPLE AND HEALTHY EXAMPLES IN YOUR LIFE. Block out the haters, doubters and unhealthy examples and find the good in things and make fitness a part of your life. Kids Talk with Preet Kaur Do you ever want to go to a place where you can play all day or a place where you can read a book? Mawson Lakes is a beautiful place and has it all. I am going to share my top 5 favourite places in Mawson Lakes.

5

MAWSON LAKES CENTRAL

Start with breakfast in front of the lake. Walking around the lake is relaxing and talking to other people is a great way to socialize. How lucky are we to also have a rowing club. When it’s lunch time, have a subway or pizza and then have some delicious dessert at Indulge In Chocolate. A few metres away is a place where you can sit down and bury your nose in a book-the local library!

4

SHEARWATER PLAYGROUND

With plenty of space to fly a kite and play cricket and ride on a big, round swing, Shearwater playground is a lovely place to be. Surrounded by water and nature, it is the perfect place to catch up with friends or have a BBQ.

PLANETARIUM

3

A place where you can learn about stuff on earth and beyond. You can do stargazing or watch movies about space on the white, dome-shaped roof. You can buy souvenirs like giant solar system puzzles or mini telescopes. It’s a great place for the family to go together (bookings needed).

PARADISE BESIDE THE CREEK

2

If you walk on the path beside the local tennis courts and past the play ground, you will see a parting in the bushes. If you go through the bushes, you will come to a place at the edge of a creek. It’s a beautiful place where the sun shines through the leaves and makes patterns on the ground. Listen to the sound of water in the creek, the leaves rustling and birds singing. The edge of the creek is lined with big flat rocks, making the perfect place to sit down and read a book. In other words….. It’s a secret paradise.

The Healthy Eating Plate The Healthy Eating Plate was created by nutrition experts at Harvard School of Public Health and is designed to help people make the best eating choices. The main message of the Healthy Eating Plate is to focus on diet quality.

Healthy plant oils in moderation Remember that low-fat does not mean "healthy" and choose olive, canola, soy, corn, sunflower or peanut oil. Avoid hydrogenated oils which contain unhealthy trans fats.

Make most of your meal vegetables and fruits ½ of your plate: Aim for colour and variety, and remember that potatoes don’t count as vegetables on the Healthy Eating Plate because of their negative impact on blood sugar.

The type of carbohydrate in the diet is more important than the amount of carbohydrate, because some sources are healthier than others.

Drink water, coffee, or tea: Skip sugary drinks, limit milk and dairy products to one to two servings per day, and limit juice to a small glass per day. Go for whole grains - ¼ of your plate: Whole grains such as barley, quinoa, oats, brown rice, and foods made with them, such as whole wheat pasta and multigrain bread have a milder effect on blood sugar and insulin than white bread, white rice, and other refined grains.

Protein power – ¼ of your plate Fish, chicken, beans and nuts are all healthy, versatile protein sources. Limit red meat, and avoid processed meats such as bacon and sausage.

Coastal Getaway

by Nigella For a while over summer I thought I was a Yorkie as we travelled the Yorke Peninsula looking for fun things to do and dog-friendly places to stay. And we found plenty.

What a stunning place for a doggie holiday swimming, walking, playing catch with the local dogs and watching the fishing boats come in at sunset. But a girl can’t escape her true origins no matter how scruffy (wet and sandy) she looks. There we were at Turton Tavern where we stopped for lunch. Mummy parked me on the veranda in the shade while she went inside, and to my surprise I heard some voices from within calling, "Hello Nigella" I looked up; how could they possibly know my name? Mummy came over to them and said "You must be from Mawson Lakes?" "Yes," they beamed. "We see you and Nigella walking past our house every evening." Small world.

Next time the thinking in your house turns to holidays, whisper in you owner’s ear that you’d like a getaway on the Yorke Peninsula. Here are some of my favourite places - boogie boarding in the clear, sheltered waters of Pelican Point at Marion Bay. This is at the bottom of the Peninsula next to the National Park. Dogs can’t go into the park, but, hey, who cares, there’s plenty of other things to do. My other favourites were playing on the beach with the local canines at Corny Point after checking out the smells at the big white lighthouse on the cliff, rolling in the sea grass at Black’s Point at low tide, eating seafood in the quaint little coastal village of Stansbury, staying in the Seaside Apartments at Marion Bay overlooking the jetty with an owner who is so dog friendly that I fell in love with the place. Walking out on the long jetty at Ardrossan where the sniff-terrain is smeared with dead fish, bait and crabs. Delicious. In this windswept photo at Ardrossan mummy said I am smiling so much that even my teeth are showing. That’s what a good holiday does for a dog!

OODLES OF FUN Have fun trying to find all the hidden objects. Then colour and admire your poodle doodle.
