Dr Conor Brady of Dogs First joins us this month and gives his opinion on fleas and the best way to get rid of the annoying little critters. For our Cover Story this issue, we speak to Dr Marc Abraham on his latest campaign to ban the import of young puppies into Britain, a topic that is perhaps even more important at this time of year in the runup to the festive season when people maybe tempted to welcome a new puppy into the home…but at what cost? WESTIE IN NEED CAMPAIGN ALFIE AND ELI FROM NORTH WALES ARE SET TO EMBARK ON A FEAST OF NAKED DOG’S SUPERFOOD RANGE TO HELP SOOTHE SKIN ISSUES
Following Naked Dog’s national appeal to find a Westie in Need, Westies Alfie and Eli from North Wales now have the opportunity to try Naked Dog’s Superfood Range with supplements for free following a consultation with animal nutritionist Caroline Griffith. Westie Alfie (9) and Eli (around 10 years of age) both suffer with food intolerance issues and are very pink underneath their fur due to yeasty skin, according to owner Anne Planbrook. Alfie, who weighs around 10.8kg and Eli who weighs around 9.2kg are no strangers to raw food and owner Anne hopes the switch to Naked Dog raw food will result in her besties having less inflamed skin and less pinkness. Fleas, Flora and Fresh Ingredients DR CONOR BRADY OF DOGS FIRST TALKS CRITTERS, CHEMICALS, AND CORPORATIONS
Tell us about the benefits of Diatomaceous Earth for those Westie owners that want to go down the natural route.
Diatomaceous Earth (DE) is fantastic. It’s a very fine chalk-like powder, the result of millions of little sea creatures sinking to the bottom of the ocean over billions of years. As opposed to the chemicals used today, DE kills mechanically, lacerating shells, clogging air holes, choking and drying the bug out. It’s totally harmless and many folks actually eat it (not recommended although most types are Codex food grade). This means DE doesn’t have side effects (but if you have anyone with lung issues in the house you should talc them outside as DE might aggravate). It works fairly effectively on all bugs – fleas, ticks, mites, ants, spiders – you can even mix it with water and spray on your plants as a way of controlling green fly (careful outside, it will harm bees too). Finally, look at the price of it. A bag will last for years.
Why is the natural route so important in your view?
I’m not a fan of chemical parasite control for pets with no parasites. Studies show that side effects are far from rare, as is commonly touted. From itch to seizures to death, these chemicals can have very serious immunological side effects with some of the most popular today (a result of heavy advertising in

veterinary circles) among the worst offenders. We are now getting signs near waterways asking pet owners to not let their dogs swim in the water. And yes, they can affect us too. Very potent, very nasty chemicals you drop on the back of their neck where they are designed to stay for a month, the same neck you and the kids rub and nuzzle into every day thereafter. Or, worse still, extremely toxic chemical powders on collars that makes its way into the air of your house, into the dust where your children crawl. Guys, such chemicals don’t exist for humans for a reason. Our kids have a 1/10 chance of picking up nits in school. We don’t put a chemical on them in advance and just in case do we? Instead, we cross our fingers and hope our kids don’t get them. Avoiding the chemical route is all the more important for Westies. They went through a number of tight genetic bottle necks. Along with the white coat, this has resulted in Westies being up near the top of “allergy” cases coming into us. Recurring skin (and gut) conditions are too common. Worse, when they go really wrong, they can be tricky to get right. By measuring levels of homocysteine in the blood (a stress metabolite), studies show dry food antagonises the immune system almost ten-fold compared to raw, so feeding fresh, species appropriate raw dog food is crucial for this breed. But in a close second is the avoidance of all the chemical products we are told our pets need – chemical flea control for pets with no fleas, chemical worm control for dogs with no worms,

annual booster for already adequately vaccinated dogs, the completely useless KC vaccine, lepto. All of it should be questioned. The less “products” you use on Westies the better, that’s now certain.
How concerned should dog owners be if their besties have fleas?
I wouldn’t be concerned about fleas in the slightest. I’d rather the critter than the chemicals used to prevent them. But more than that, fleas are something of a bio-indicator. Healthy dogs don’t tend to get infested, only the very young, old, sick and dying (animals with weak immunity) seem to suffer. It’s like mange. Demodex is all around us all the time but it’s only the highly stressed dogs in kennels that get over-run with it. If you see fleas on your dog, I would be more concerned with what might be going on under the hood.
What is your opinion on brands such as Frontline and what is the long-term impact of these in your opinion?
I very strongly advise not using any such products unless absolutely vital. A dog overrun with sarcoptic mange, for example.
Some vets appear to suggest Frontline & Bravecto. Why don’t they suggest the natural route?
I think most vets believe what they are doing is right and in the best interests of your pet. They’re animal lovers, worked hard to get into that position and are hardly driving around in Porsches. However, we know vets are not taught about “natural” anything in college, be it flea control or the very obvious benefits of fresh, species appropriate food for pets. Corporate funded seminars and reps sell them the easy, effective, “safe” and profitable solution. Furthermore, we have all the evidence we need that the take-over of private vet practices by corporations whose sole focus is to increase revenue year on year has resulted in an explosion of “treatments”. Pet drugs are the new frontier for big Pharma and business is booming.
You have mentioned that fleas can be a symptom of other problems. Can you elaborate on this?
You have all sorts living in your gut, not just bacteria but viruses, protozoa, and numerous fungi. When your gut flora is out of whack, let’s say a high-sugar diet, the yeasts that live in your gut can bloom and you get thrush. It’s not that you “got thrush”, you always had it, it’s just the conditions are now ripe for it to bloom. This is the same with many bugs - a healthy, balanced, robust system keep them all in check. In this way, and to simplify, the immune system is like a forcefield. It keeps everything at bay, including the pathogenic stuff at your skin barrier. If you want to keep fleas at bay, you need the immune system (and
gut flora, which are intertwined) firing on full cylinders. Stress, gut dysbiosis (out of whack gut flora), disease, chemical insult, age, a diet full of sugar, bad fat and nasty preservatives whilst void of life-affirming bioactive compounds, all annihilate your immune system. You lower the defence, and anything can get in.
How easy/difficult is it to get rid of fleas once your Westie has them? What are your tips?
It’s simple, unless your dog is desperately sick. Aside from DE if they have an infection. Check their coat regularly for fleas using a flea comb. It can be easier to check for flea dirt which is little black specks (this is dried blood;) it turns wet on a damp tissue) as the animals themselves can be hard to find. When combing, best to spritz the coat a little first to dampen it. Use warm water with some neem oil dropped into it. It’s great stuff for repelling fleas so you will be combing that in as you look for them. Only if you detect an issue I would reach for the DE. You dust the dog down like you were covering them in talc. Best to do this outside as the dust is very fine. Pay particular attention to the flea hot spots (behind the ears, scruff of neck, base of tail, armpits). Leave it on for 20mins or so and then wash out (put neem oil in your water!). I would repeat this the next day and then again 4-7 days to account for any eggs you may have missed in the surroundings. That will sort the dog out. You should also either hot wash their beds or bag them up and leave for a week or two. Fleas need food and will die off if they don’t get it. Vacuum up their surroundings paying particular attention under radiators etc. Use flea traps to check if you have them all. Other cool natural products for fleas include cedarcide or neem oil (bugs don’t like an environment that smells of neem or citronella, hence they’re in mosquito candles which work great. Popular products like Billy No Mates work well as a preventative too (and ticks, much trickier little critters as they are more opportunistic, latching on to whoever walks by). If you need to go nuclear for whatever reason, make sure to give some antioxidants and immune boosters after (echinacea for immune boost, seaweed or golden turmeric paste for anti-inflammatory, green leaves like raspberry or dandelion for the kidneys, milk thistle to support the liver). Raw Proof. The Evidence that Supports Raw Feeding BY JONATHAN SELF
I don’t think there can be a dog lover in the country who hasn’t heard about raw feeding. I switched my own dogs and the dogs I was fostering about fifteen years ago. At the time I was an accidental pig farmer. The 20 pigs I had bought to clear some land had not been practising safe sex and I had over a hundred piglets to care for. I loved those pigs so much that I went off eating meat and also handling it. So, I talked a friend into starting a raw dog food company that used only organic, wild and free range meat, simply because I didn’t want to make my own! The company (Honey’s Real Dog Food) is still very small but because it is run by dog lovers for dog lovers we invest a lot of our profits back into projects that other similar businesses might not consider essential. One of these projects was some research into the benefits of raw feeding. Background
Traditionally, domesticated dogs were fed a species appropriate diet consisting of raw meat, raw bones, and raw vegetables (a ‘raw diet’), supplemented by table scraps and whatever other food they could scavenge. After the introduction of processed dog food in 1860 their diet slowly began to change

Why We Believe in Raw Feeding
At Honey’s, you won’t be surprised to hear, we are convinced that a raw food diet is beneficial to dogs. We base this on:
Logic
Every species on earth must eat an appropriate diet in order to survive and flourish. For some species the range of appropriate foods is very limited, for others there is greater tolerance. Although, over time, certain species, with varying degrees of success, can adapt to a new diet, it doesn’t alter the core fact that the food they eat must be appropriate. Dogs, Canis lupus familiaris, have the typical physiology and digestive system of a carnivore. Their natural diet, like that of other canids, consists predominantly of prey with a certain amount of vegetable matter (grasses, herbs, fruit etc...) It is what they have eaten for millions of years.
Observation
We have been responsible for feeding thousands of dogs a raw food diet since 2009 and we have seen only positive outcomes as a result. It is one thing to believe something and quite another to prove it. As raw food has become more popular with dog lovers, so, too, has demand for hard evidence as to its safety and efficacy. Veterinary professionals, in particular, seek reassurance. Naturally, they do not wish to recommend anything that could have adverse health

implications. With this in mind, Honey’s launched a species appropriate diet research investigation.
Raw Proof
We set out to investigate two things. First, whether a species appropriate (aka raw food) diet can be formulated so as to meet the highest possible nutritional guidelines for dogs, as specified by the European Pet Food Industry (FEDIAF). Second, whether such a diet will prove to be nutritionally adequate when fed to a meaningful sample of dogs over 26 weeks using an extended version of the rigorous trial protocol developed by the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO).
What We Discovered
In a nutshell we discovered that it is possible to create a range of complete, species appropriate (raw meat, raw bone, raw vegetable) adult dog foods that – when fed in conjunction with each other – meet the FEDIAF nutritional guidelines without need for additional, synthetic supplementation. We found that when they were fed a range of complete, species appropriate (raw meat, raw bone, raw vegetable) dog foods, experienced no adverse health effects or significant loss of weight.
A Word about Canine Digestion
Dogs have no digestive enzymes in their saliva (unlike humans) and very large, expandable stomachs (they can eat 5% of their body weight at a single sitting, which would be like someone who weighs 10 stone eating seven pounds of food in one go) not to mention indescribably strong stomach acids (strong enough to burn your fingers). Their digestive system is designed so that they can tear off chunks of raw meat, crunch up raw bones and swallow the lot whole.
The Future
Happily, more and more research is being done into canine nutrition and much of it is pointing to the fact that dogs, like humans, need to eat a healthy and appropriate diet. That diet should be as close to their natural diet as possible. If you would like more information please do get in touch. HowOldisthat Puppyinthe Window? Sick dogs, expensive dogs, young dogs – where will you buy your puppy from this Christmas?

It took TV vet Dr. Marc Abraham, his team, and animal welfare campaigners over 10 whole years of campaigning and over 300 visits to the Houses of Parliament to finally get Lucy’s Law made law. At the centre of the campaign was Lucy, a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel who stole the hearts of the nation. An ex-breeding dog who was rescued from a Welsh breeding farm and a lifetime of abuse who went on to live a loving life with Lisa Garner before she died in 2016. While Lucy’s Law came into force in England in April, it appeared to many that the Welsh Government stalled on implementing the law, a surprise given that Wales is known in animal circles for its extremely murky, unsavoury puppy farming business, bringing yet more heartache and frustration to armies of campaigners and dog

lovers across Britain. Lucy’s Law in Scotland is yet to be adopted. In October, however, an announcement was made stating Lucy’s Law would be introduced in the Welsh Senedd in May 2021. While the news is welcomed by some, others remain cautious to see what the law will specify and entail. “The Welsh Government committed itself to introducing Lucy’s Law after its first lengthy consultation launched in February 2019, so the recent statement isn’t really news especially as it was delivered without any commitment to a date; just that it would be implemented sometime before the end of the current Parliament. By the time Lucy’s Law is finally on the statute books in Wales it will have been a year since it became law in

England meaning an additional year of legalised suffering for breeding dogs in puppy farms, their offspring and of course the many members of the public who have bought into this heartache. “With the Senedd elections scheduled for 6 May 2021 there has been speculation that perhaps the Welsh Government is hoping to capitalise on introducing something that’s popular with the electorate right at the end of its current term. But this extra year of delay and the appalling neglect and abuse that has been allowed to continue as a result, makes it impossible to forget or forgive for those of us who have been at the coalface of exposing this animal welfare scandal in Wales for over a decade.

This unnecessary delay has allowed those with no moral compass to continue profiting from animal and human misery. It has also contributed to puppy pandemic hysteria through mass production and availability of low welfare puppies, hugely inflated prices, and now we have the annual Christmas puppy maelstrom to factor in too. All of this is already having a huge impact on small rescues who are in financial crisis. And what is so gut-wrenching is that it could have so easily been prevented if the Government had acted on the abundance of
evidence provided to the Cabinet Minister previously. We now await something more concrete in the Government’s next PR statement,” said Linda Goodman, Founder of CARIAD, a dog charity based in South Wales. In response, a Welsh Government spokesperson said: “A ban on the third-party sales of puppies alone will not end ‘puppy farming’. Understanding barriers to enforcement, ensuring impartial veterinary advice when licensing and educating the public are essential to improving puppy welfare.
“Changing legislation is not a quick process - it has to be evidence-based, and proportionate. It is for this reason we took care to consult not once but twice on this issue, and also why we are not relying on legislation alone to ‘change the system’.

The new law essentially means there is a ban on the third-party sale of puppies which should result in limiting the amount of litters being bred by breeders who will find it more difficult to sell young puppies on further. The goal is that Britain has far fewer sick puppies being born and sold into families that simply wanted to add a new member to their clan. The plan is to make dog breeders more accountable and allow potential dog parents to see the pup’s mother and be able to trace where the puppy has come from. Prior to Lucy’s Law, those wanting a dog could simply buy one from a pet shop… along with the added risks of buying an underage, sick puppy with no idea about the dog’s history. Around 80,000 dogs a year are said to be sold through third party dealers in the UK. “The passing of Lucy’s Law was one of the greatest moments of my life”, says Dr. Marc Abraham who initially embarked on this campaign after seeing puppies dying from parvovirus being sold by a third party dealer who bought them from a licensed Welsh breeding farm.

As a result, Pup Aid was launched but Marc readily admits that back then he knew nothing about politics and law, little did he know what lie ahead. “We had so many people trying to block us, big organizations, the pet industry, various MPs, because we were trying to tidy up the dog world and a lot of organizations rely on sales, data capture, campaigns. It really did unravel some disingenuous behaviour. There were five of us doing this in our spare time back then with no real knowledge of campaigning, but we persevered and kept going,” says Dr. Marc Abraham. A major turning point was when Prime Minister Boris Johnson and fiancé Carrie Symonds adopted Dylan, a puppy farm dog from Wales. “It was great to raise awareness and it was fantastic to see the Prime Minister wearing a Lucy’s Law rosette outside Number 10,” said Eileen Jones, Founder of Friends of Animal Wales. Eileen was involved in pushing through the Lucy’s Law campaign from the beginning.

Recently, Love Island finalists Molly-Mae Hague and Tommy Fury were all over the news after purchasing a Pomeranian puppy called Mr Chai who died after just six days of being in Britain following an importation trip from Russia. The dog apparently suffered with seizures, diarrhoea, and vomiting, all of which didn’t go unnoticed by Marc the Vet, who has appeared on the Paul O’Grady show, This Morning, among numerous others where his mission is to educate viewers. The law says that puppies being imported into Britain must be at least 15 weeks old and while Mr Chai was over the legal age limit it appears the couple were nonethe-less were sold a sick puppy.
An online petition set up by animal lover Lucy Parkinson soon spread around the country with a call to arms for people to sign and agree that immoral sales such as these need to come to an abrupt halt. Awardwinning comedian and animal activist Ricky Gervais is said to have signed the petition. Gervais recently also called upon Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, to end the exotic pet trade via an open letter sent on behalf of the World Animal Protection and the Campaign to End Wildlife Trade, according to the Mirror newspaper. Ricky is no wall flower when it comes to airing his views on social media about his love and views of animal welfare.
“This weekend, plan a visit to your local rescue shelter, where your new best friend is waiting for you,” stated one post on Ricky Gervais’ Twitter page. “Puppy farms produce sick and scared puppies. Raising awareness and pet adoption helps stop this cruel industry,” he said back in 2017 on a petition to stop puppy farming.

While some celebrities clearly spread positive awareness, others, especially ‘influencers’ can at times act (even unintentionally) against campaigns as they promote the latest ‘fashionable’ breeds across social media resulting in the potential increase in sales of overseas dogs being shipped to Britain. To sum up, there was a 10-year campaign to stop puppy-farming, an on-going campaign to adopt and not shop, a campaign to stop the exotic pet trade, a campaign against the immoral sale of sick puppies…is there anything else needed to keep Britain’s dogs safe? According to Dr. Abraham, yes, there most certainly is, says Dr. Abraham, the ban of puppy imports.

One element that makes this such a striking campaign is under Lucy’s Law the aim is for potential dog owners to be able to see the dog’s mother. However, if a puppy is being imported this clearly cannot happen and places current dog laws under scrutiny once again as this goes against the UK Government’s own licensing system. Perhaps surprisingly, Brexit could soon help members of the dog kingdom because Britain could potentially control its own borders including what’s allowed in animal-wise. “The solutions are easy and
interestingly these are now being backed by the Dog’s Trust and the RSPCA which shows we are having consensus in the sector. We need to raise the minimum age of puppies being imported into the UK from 15 weeks to six months, just an increase of 11 weeks, and the reason for this is firstly the puppy can be given a Rabies vaccination at 12 weeks and be given three weeks for it to work (although nobody will ever know if they were actually given it in the first place or if it has worked.) Secondly, at 15 weeks, it’s almost impossible to know the puppy’s age even for
a vet. It’s far too young to be taken away from the mother and to start travelling and this is irresponsible breeding. By increasing the age to six months, the secondary teeth are through, you can’t fake it, so you can identify the dog’s age and then you’re able to have a blood test done to tell if the dog has had a rabies vaccination rather than the dog potentially either having it twice or not at all. The petition to ban puppy imports has gained around 126,000 signatures with three months left to go (at the time our magazine went to print) before it is submitted for debate before Parliament. While one could argue that many people won’t want to buy a puppy that is six months of age, this has clear advantages for the dog and could potentially deter breeders from advertising across social media platforms. Another beneďŹ t of increasing import age to 6 months is that puppies will be more socialised and robust to handle the long journeys, and these changes may also help stop the illegal trade in young pups too.

Dog-Friendly Holidays DUE TO CORONA VIRUS RESTRICTIONS ON TRAVEL, MANY BRITS HAVE DECIDED TO FOREGO FOREIGN TRAVEL AND HOLIDAY IN THE UK MUCH TO THE DELIGHT OF OUR WESTIES
By Sue Makepeace There are so many excellent dog-friendly destinations geared towards the dog-loving British public. It’s always worth doing plenty of research before making a firm decision and booking. When a destination and accommodation catches the eye always check out the reviews, check the position of the property in relation to safe dog walks, dog-friendly beaches, cafes, restaurants and public houses, and that there’s a safe garden for the dogs attached to the accommodation. It’s always handy to find somewhere that has plenty of good walks in close proximity. If raw feeding is your choice of food for your bestie, then make sure there is a freezer to store food, or a good local pet shop where you can stock up. It’s always best to make a check list and mark off each item as its packed in the car on the day of travel. Starting with items you’re likely to need on the journey is best. If it’s a particularly long trip, make sure you have plenty of drinks and snacks to keep your pooches busy. Harnesses, car safety straps, travel water bowls, bottles of filtered water, treats (nothing smelly as you don’t need the smell of fish skins or pizzles on a long journey). Dried lamb bites, or turmeric

sausages work well. Then have a think about what one might need away. Food – make sure you plan enough meals and have enough food for while you’re away. Dog bowls or platters (and even scales if you raw feed) so you can continue to weigh out correct portion sizes. Do your dogs have any supplements? Do you need insect repellents, intestinal cleansers on a daily or weekly basis? If you have a dog sensitive to fleas or mites it’s worth taking a can of repellent to use in the accommodation. There have been lots of dogs holidaying in the properties before your arrival so always best to be prepared. Some holiday cottages do provide dog beds, but it’s worth taking your own selection of fleecy blankets for your dogs to use and be sure to pack your dog’s beds too if your accommodation doesn’t provide them. It’s always useful to take spare collars and leads, just in case a lead gets dropped or a collar gets covered in mud or something nastier if you have a dog that loves to roll. If your dog is on medication, take enough for your whole trip, no one wants a poorly dog while on holiday. Check out the closest

veterinary practice and keep a note of opening hours and telephone numbers. It’s a safe bet to also take a very basic first aid kit just in case, this includes only a couple of bits like Colloidal Silver Gel, Colloidal Silver spray, coconut oil, a tick key for removing any of the nasty things, and some cotton wool pads to clean any wounds. The only other things you will need are a supply of poop bags, the biodegradable kind, some towels, dogs on their holidays love to swim at the beach or roll in mud. Take a bottle of dog shampoo as most Westies will want to make the most of their holidays by getting muddy and filthy whilst on walks. Remember to take a brush to remove the mud and sand out of their coats. There’s nothing worse than going away and 100 miles into your journey you realise you have forgotten something you are going to need. For those that haven’t sampled the delights of a U.K holiday in some of the wonderful destinations we have in this country, I strongly suggest you give it a go in the not too distant future.

You’ve led a pretty remarkable life to date. Tell us about your three passions of animals, travel, and art.
Yes, it has been amazing! I had a troubling year in 2016, but not an untypical story, I was forty something and struggling with a close family death, my divorce and subsequent house sale and a family illness on the other side of the world and wondering what I should do next. I did a fair amount of soul searching and with the support of my then sixteen year old daughter, I joined a worldwide housesitting site and ventured off alone to immerse myself in travel, housesitting and the art that resulted from the animals I met. I am originally from England, I emigrated to New Zealand when I was 32, it was one of those ‘let’s do it’ opportunities that rarely come along. Knowing that I’d have to return for family ‘events’. My father was terminally ill on this occasion, so after a month in Australia where I housesat

horses, chickens, dogs, lizards, tawny frogmouths and a snake…I housesat mainly in the South West of England so that I could return to my parent’s home should I need to. I met some amazing people housesitting and of course bonded with some very lovely pets. I made a website before I left so that my friends and family could follow my journey and pledged to draw a pet from each of the places where I housesat, I left this original pencil drawing for the host as a way of saying thank you and put a copy of it on the website gallery. Trusted house sitters, the company that I had used to find housesits found out about my drawings and made a video about me, that is also on my website. Then the London Press Association found me and published an article too, exciting times! I have a genuine love of all animals, but I must admit that I have always had an affinity with dogs. It was a huge wrench to leave my own dog back in New Zealand. I returned to New Zealand a year after I

left and carried on housesitting for a while. I have just been in England for another year due to my mum’s passing. I took the opportunity to catch up with some of my hosts and the pets that I’d missed so much. I also decided to do a dog grooming diploma while I was in England, it was an intensive month-long course just before Christmas 2019, pre-Covid! I met some great people who have since set up their own salons and of course I got to meet and groom lots of different breeds of dogs and a very large cat! The course was an immense help to my drawing practice. But not so much to my physical health! I managed to sustain a rotator cuff injury from the huge cat. As a result of this, knowing that I could still draw, I tentatively started asking to see if there was anybody interested in a pencil drawing of their pet. I was amazed to see how many requests turned up.

Your prints each tell a little story. What inspired you to do this?
When I returned to New Zealand after my father’s death, I was unemployed and homeless which was quite scary! I had never been unemployed and had worked as a graphic designer for over 10 years in New Zealand, so I needed to try and find a new source of income. I explored the possibility of creating a book about my housesitting adventures and started creating pencil illustrations about the pets I had looked after. Fortunately for me, a longstanding New Zealand artist spotted my work, and we began to explore the possibility of making a book from his studio. I worked on the illustrations while being mentored and upskilled on the digital drawing board and slowly they began to appear in full colour. I enjoy the process of illustration, the combination of words and images.
Your fictional pub signs are remarkable. How did this come about?
The fictional pub signs were the subject of my first solo show in The Bay of Plenty in New Zealand. I was working as a professional graphic designer but in my spare time I was an artist in residence. This means I found an artist’s studio and together with other artists we created art, sometimes individually, sometimes as a community and always with public interaction. I always felt I needed to prove myself as an artist and having a solo show was a step on that path.
The fiction al pub signs began as a game with an artist friend – the sprout and turnip, the ladybird and pig…they were just made up, silly names for pubs. I took this idea and came up with a set of six artworks, based on animals and birds, because of my love of animals, The Bear and Bumble Bee, The Horny Goat, The Mad Jack rabbit, The Rat and Raven, The Black Seal and The Ginger Tom. They are painted on wooden boards and are the size of traditional pub signs that you might see hanging outside a British pub. Some of the originals have sold, they weren’t taken up by any real pubs.
What is Doggieology?
Doggieology began while I was housesitting over Christmas 2019 in a very gorgeous 5-storey Georgian house in Bath. I had a very chatty parrot, two kittens and a cat to look after and I had the most wonderful time, most of it in the kitchen singing Christmas tunes to the pets with the help of Alexa and Mariah Carey. I was drawing away, as usual, and began looking at illustrations I had saved of old book covers. I doodled for a while pulling together an image of a Chihuahua with random patterns and showed it to my artist friend in New Zealand. His response was incredibly positive. He encouraged me to continue and that’s really how it began. I admit, I was a little sceptical of my results at first, but he was convinced there was something there and that I should persevere.

Doggieology represents our collective love for all things doggie related. A subject of study about ‘our’ interaction with the canine world. I will also be looking at other connections and interactions with the canine world which might include animate and inanimate subject matter. The name was the result of several days of brainstorming. My source of information is predominantly the British Kennel Club website, there are way over 200 distinct breeds to choose from on there and each breed presents its own visual challenges. I then search for as many different images of the breed as possible and ‘Frankenstein’ them together using photoshop. Some work well, others take a long time to knit together. The greatest challenge so far has probably been the breeds with mostly black coloured coats as I made the decision to draw them on black, rather than a patterned background. However, I enjoy the composition of these artworks. The way that the dog is staring out at you as if through a window. Poised to interact. I have many ideas on how this collection will move forward and there are lots of new artworks in the pipeline. Each limited-edition artwork is printed here in the studio by me on heavy fine art cotton rag, then signed, packaged in bespoke Doggieology packaging and then shipped worldwide. I am represented by a gallery in the Bay of Islands and looking for other outlets, not just in New Zealand. I think that Doggieology could have worldwide appeal and it is easy to order from my new website.
Do you have any career ambitions for the future?
I haven’t really ever had career ambitions. I’ve always been employed or in training for careers that I thought might be an adventure and I certainly have had a few. I have been a post grad professional landscape architect, a qualified high school art teacher, a graphic designer, and a qualified dog groomer. Now, I’m a committed fulltime artist working on Doggieology drawings and the traditional style pencil drawing commissions that come in from all over the world. Most of all, I want to carry on doing what I love most and that’s travelling, meeting dogs and making art. I’m really fortunate that I can combine my three loves. I just want to live comfortably, whatever that looks like, and hope that my friends and family (especially my pride and joy – my incredibly special daughter) can be proud of my achievements.

• 1/4 cup Greek yoghurt • 1/4 cup of bone broth (can be replaced with water) • 2 tablespoons crushed dehydrated liver (or your dog’s favourite treat!)
• Combine Greek yoghurt, bone broth, and dehydrated liver in a mixing bowl and mix until combined. • Fill up 3-4 serves using a small silicone muffin pan and freeze for 12+ hours. • Once the ice cream has semi frozen place a dental chew/salmon spine or any other long treat to use as an edible handle when it comes to feeding time. • Always introduce new foods to your dog in small amounts and gradually work up to the full serving size.
