S

pring has arrived and change is in the air. It has been a long winter for some with lockdowns and it is nice to see a plan forward to return to a new ‘normal’ as some restrictions start to lift. As the weather warms up it is the perfect time to host a summer garden party. We share some top tips, essential products and great gins for a perfect afternoon. Artist and fashion designer, Libby Watkins talks to us about her Island Paradiso collection that captures the essence of escaping the everyday and exploring – something we could all do with right now. With long lockdowns coming to an end, it’s a great time to visit our regional areas and explore. We chat to Gorgi Coghlan, who along with husband, Simon, has turned The Provincial Hotel in Ballarat into a premier destination. Whether it is for a sumptuous meal using locally sourced products in their European inspired restaurant, Lola, or to stay in one of their beautifully appointed guest rooms, it is a must do. We also tour some beautiful homes created by top Australian designers, Jessi Eve and Catherine Heraghty. Jessi invites us into an inner Sydney terrace home that she transformed, where sustainability was a large part of the brief, a trend that is continuing to grow in home design. Catherine, creative director of The Stables, welcomes us into a home she designed for a family who made a sea change to a large family home with coastal views, a dream for many of us. And we visit Carlene and Michael Duffy’s beautiful Tallebudgera home which went through a decade long renovation. The results speak for themselves. An eclectic mix of old and new combined with smart design to create a family home that is warm and organic with a touch of Australiana. A huge highlight was the chance to talk to Bobby Berk, famous for his role as resident designer in the Netflix juggernaut, Queer Eye and a respected designer in his own right. Bobby has the most infectious and warm take on life. He talks to us about his businesses, his design ethos, his love for his family - husband Dewey and puppy, Bimini and the fact that he is a homebody at heart. My favourite part of the interview was Bobby talking about the popularity of ‘Queer Eye’ when he says, “I believe the reason QE is popular in any country is because of the realisation and impact we leave on our heroes. We don’t transform them; we highlight what already exists and enhance what they don’t see.”. This sums up the kindness and acceptance that is Bobby Berk and which makes him our fabulous cover model this issue. Enjoy!

Island Paradiso

Meet Sydney artist and fashion and textile designer, Libby Watkins, who captures island dreaming in her limited edition pieces that take you to a world far, far away – Island Paradiso. 9

Q&A Tell us about your yourself? I’ll skip to the good parts - I am an artist, I would say I am probably most of the time powered by coffee and the old vitamin-sea, nothing beats the salt on your skin. Everything I create is from my own island oasis, Island Paradiso and everyone is invited... Where are you based? I am a Northern Beaches based artist, Inspired by my local surrounds here on the Beaches. We are so lucky to have some of the best beaches and waterways in Australia. I love exploring on the surf or in the flat side of the peninsula on my paddle board. How would you describe your creative style and mediums used? I would say I am known for a particular style - but I am a total rule breaker, if I find I am drawn to a medium I will push the boundaries for what that medium is typically used for and take it to a new place whilst honouring the integrity of that medium. I love a fresh spin or look in something, for example, how I create art with linen. How did you begin your career? Sitting on the beach watching the waves crash on shore and run back away, I feel like I had escaped the world and all its worries, I wanted others to have this joy and experience being lost in a resort with no worries! The thought of that gave me such a thrill. Using my paintbrush I create these inspired oasis stories, it was such as simple inspiration and I really wanted people to

connect with that feeling. I had the opportunity to do this full time, so I turned this into a full time business. I wanted to put my style into the resort lifestyle, and I have expanded the brand Libby Watkins to now include homewares and resort wear! Who and what inspires you? Every day when I go to bed, when my head hits that pillow - I make sure I did everything that day I possibly could to share Paradiso with the world!!! What do you love about your work? EVERYTHING!! It’s a licence to create and evolve every second I am in work mode! I get such a thrill for finding a reason to give you an excuse to join me on Island Paradiso - which is most of the time! There are so many ways to introduce Paradiso through different applications such as art, homewares, murals or wallpaper, the creativity is endless. It lets me cater for many variables of artistic licence giving everyone an inclusive way to experience the world of Paradiso. We have really nailed the Paradiso experience and it’s been very well received. I love my work mode ON time as much as my off time - when I am with Dash, my seven month old son, I love being present and switching off with him and enjoying his perspective on the world. I have been so busy creating junior Paradiso experiences now that it’s all relative! It is so much fun!

What does the rest 2021 have in store for you? We all just want summer to roll on in and set up camp… I have so many tabs open right now in design, art and lifestyle I am just going to keep pushing the boundaries and creating these new collections that stay relevant to the world! I have found current times whilst challenging also really rewarding. Currently the studio is shipping art orders globally, whilst also shipping out our new art kits to your door! This is new but it is exciting that we can adapt and move creativity to align whilst doing our thing! @libbywatkinsart libbywatkins.com

Q&A

Tell us a bit about your business? My business is not a traditional one and there is something humbling about that. Over the course of 10+ years, my design business has evolved and so have I. I think it’s really important, that no matter where you are, at any stage of your business- that you are nimble. Currently my business runs in three different sectors- media (Queer Eye and other production/media avenues), interior design for residential and builder communities and partnerships/licensing agreements. All three are not mutually exclusive but continue to function as separate entities that fuel my creativity and support one another. Having a media presence has provided me a landscape to the media world. I have learned so much about production, crews and how a set functions that has catapulted a lot of new ideas and projects that have already started. While I would love to share more on this, you’ll have to wait but the premise of any work I do is creating an impact to better people’s lives and mental health. I am a firm believer that is the genesis of interior design and why there is such an emotional attachment to Queer Eye. We see our heroes’ lives transformed and their overall way of life is improved. A large part of my business is done behind the scenes and off camera. My full functioning design firm/team is based in Los Angeles, and we are always busy doing model/builder homes and residential spaces. These projects can take 10+ months to complete so we are always looking at calendars well into the following year. This sector of my business is one that evolved

"I would describe my style as warm organic modern but with a hit of graphic and bold elements."

from my brick-and-mortar stores. Now I can put my aesthetic into a project with limited red tape. We work with incredible builders, attend award shows, have “geeky” design banter amongst industry professionals to discuss ways we can better our design performance and what opportunities there might be. The last avenue of my business is licensing/sponsorships. You might be familiar with the term sponsorships but there is a lot of invisible labour and decisions that go into my brand when working with other brands, other individuals when partnering and/or developing my own products. My team and I carefully look at company core values and their mission. If it doesn’t align with what we set out to achieve, it’s an immediate “no thanks!” To me this is incredibly important. The world of partnerships can be very saturated, but I have relied heavily on my community to tell me what they want from me, be it design, lifestyle, advice and so on. If I work with a brand or individual that doesn’t seem like a brand fit, I lose the trust of my community who shows up daily. Think of it like an accountability check. My fans and following are my customers- if I partner with a brand that doesn’t seem like a match, then when I produce a product of my own, there’s a high chance my consumer will not see it as genuine or committed. Thus, integrity and authenticity are what our baseline is, in any action we take, be it design or political. How did you begin your career in design? From Missouri to Texas to Denver, I grew up quickly at a young age and was always very driven. After realizing the Midwest was not for me or my lifestyle, I settled in New York (for 20 years) which is where I learned first-hand about the retail world. From companies like Bed Bath & Beyond and Restoration Hardware I realised my creative eye and love for people, allowed for growth in the creative space amongst these corporate companies. I knew after some time amongst these larger companies, I wanted to be on my own and I opened my first

showroom in lower Manhattan. Years later, in 2015, my business began to grow and felt a full-service interior design practice for residential, commercial, and hospitality clientele was the next step. In addition to the rapid growth of the Bobby Berk brand and my lifestyle website BobbyBerk.com, I was cast on the Netflix show Queer Eye. As the resident designer on the show and a member of the Fab Five, it’s earnest and endearing approach gave even more eyes to what was a thriving design business… like a perfect storm. I think that there is so much more to learn and grow within my own career. I have seen the beginnings of it and each year, I am continuously surprised at how many more avenues I can take it. If it wasn’t for my humble beginnings and rolling up my sleeves, I wouldn’t have a sliver of that enthusiasm in wanting more. How would you describe your signature style? I would describe my style as warm organic modern but with a hit of graphic and bold elements. I’m definitely drawn to clean lines, but I try to bring in a lot of natural elements and soft textures to create contrast as well as a level of comfort. I find a lot of calm in the neutral tones this palette brings and at the end of the day my home is my retreat and where I find my Zen, so I love having a space that really allows me to unplug visually and mentally from it all. While I lean more neutral in my own home that doesn’t mean that I don’t love working with colour and different styles as I do find myself working on projects in a range of styles, but even if the room is bold and colourful, I always try to incorporate these more neutral components to give the room balance and visual space. Your best interior design tip? The number one thing I tell anyone who asks is to swap out your light fixtures. It is one of those things that can literally be done in less than an hour and swapping in new fixtures can make such a huge

20

Image: Tessa Neustadt

difference not only visually but from a functional standpoint too. Good lighting can make or break a room - think about when you walk into a space that is either overly lit or way too dark, it really can change your mood and the way that you interact with the space. But the good news is, swapping out your lighting is EASY. You can change out any lighting that is hardwired, whether it’s a pendant, chandelier, flush mount or wall sconce - even if you’re renting. I promise, it’s not that complicated, and you can do it in under an hour! I also recommend embracing texture and pattern in your space. The worst thing for me is a room that feels totally flat and one dimensional. Bringing in an array of textures through textiles, accessories, rugs, or wallpaper will create depth and make a room much more visually appealing. What designers inspire you? There are so many great designers working today. Although it’s very different from my own style, I love the work of Justina Blakeney of Jungalow. She’s got such an unique perspective on design and really inspires me to always seek out new ideas and explore different references. I’m also inspired by a lot of Los Angeles based designers, like Studio Life/Style and Disc Interiors. They both create such fantastic work that really has a refined, Southern California feel. But there are also so many that people may not be as familiar with. The power of social media has brought a new visibility to so many designers around the world that we may not be familiar with previously and I’ve found myself falling into so many rabbit holes on Pinterest or Instagram looking through the work of designers that are new on my radar. I also recently started offering my design services on the platform The Expert (a service which allows you to book a design consultation virtually from anywhere in the world with a designer and get hands on advice in real time) and their entire roster of designers is inspiring to me.

Bobby has created a neutral space that still has plenty of warmth and lots of dramatic moments for his home office Image Tessa Nuestadt.

What do you love about your work? I am continuously reminded about the impact of a functional, organised, and well-designed home that can make a difference in an individual’s day. Sure, design is beautiful and can be elaborate and aspirational, but the one result in any home decor project I take on has the same result. A lasting impression for their mental health. There is no greater reward in my work than inspiring people to create a space they feel worth living in. Be it how to create a more functional kitchen or designing a bedroom that will invite you to shut down and reboot. We often think that design comes with a pretty penny, and while it can be extravagant and costly, I love inspiring those to think differently. From shopping on Facebook marketplace to DIY projects, the reward can be just as fruitful without being too spendy. In the end, the goal is to create a haven that is desirable for the individual. This is guaranteed to help one’s mental health. A happy home is a happy mind. As someone who has seen the emotional impact when we share the reveal, I also see the client and/or hero being motivated to live a lifestyle that puts themselves first. What a more empowering role, than to inspire others to take care of themselves in a place they can call home. Greatest budget buy or budget decorating tip? When it comes to adding those finishing layers of accessories and art to your home, I recommend shopping what you already own before buying

anything new. Place all your items in one central location so you can take inventory of everything first, and then try things out in different areas. You might be surprised how moving a piece of art, a vase or a few accessories on a shelf can give a room a whole new look. You can also save a ton of money in the kitchen by using inexpensive IKEA cabinetry and just changing out the cabinet doors and hardware for a more custom look. I have done this in so many projects (including our new office) and you would never know that it’s straight off the shelf. Your show, Queer Eye, is incredibly popular in Australia. What do you think it is about your show that appeals to such a varied audience? While it might seem predictable to say, “love is love”, I believe the reason QE is popular in any country is because of the realisation and impact we leave on our heroes. We don’t transform them; we highlight what already exists and enhance what they don’t see. Seeing someone love themselves is universal. We show that loving yourself or anyone you want, has no boundaries. I believe that QE is also stripping away the negative connotation that exists in the LGBTQ+ community. We show our strengths and talents, work together and we happen to be gay. I think its important people realise while our personalities and talents are all different to be productive in transforming someone’s lives, being gay is secondary. The hope is that people will realise that we are humans with talent that we want to share our passion with and ultimately irrelevant who we choose to love or marry. What’s your favourite way to spend a day in your region/home? Contrary to popular belief, I am a homebody. I am often seen travelling, filming and constantly doing media tours etc. Now, spending time at home is simply a luxury in and of itself. The newest member of our family, Bimini has made up for all the travel I’ve done throughout the years and prioritising time with the new pup and husband is one that has grounded me and kept me content. We have an incredible 360 degree view of Los Angeles, so whether it’s a workout in the morning to kick start my day, or enjoying cooking in the kitchen with Dewey, our day is filled within our four walls that keep us busy. We love the long walks with Bimini through nature as it makes us get up from our desks to keep our bodies moving. Those extra steps and fresh air work calls are imperative to keep my creative juices flowing and normalise this work life balance. What have you learnt from the past 12 months while the world has been in the grips of COVID? Has the experience of the pandemic changed how you design and work? Definitely. Spending so much time at home made me really evaluate how we exist within a space and what is truly essential. So when designing, it’s not enough for an interior to just look beautiful, it also has to feel good and really function for the needs of the occupants. I’ve also come to think of a home as even more of a safe space and sanctuary, where we want to feel comforted and fully connected. What does the rest of 2021 and 2022 have in store for Bobby Berk? There are a lot of exciting things on the horizon! First and foremost, my team and I will be moving into a brand new office space that we’ve been renovating over the past 18 months. It’s going to provide so much more space for us to expand our design capabilities and really be a showcase for our work and my product lines. We also have quite a few residential projects in the works, some new home builder communities all over the US, and another season of Queer Eye on the way too. @bobby bobbyberk.com

The Entertainer

ele HOME meets the effervescent Gorgi Coghlan, the brains behind the transformation of The Provincial Hotel in Ballarat and the owner of the most infectious laugh in Australian show biz! Gorgi and husband, Simon, have created a sophisticated and welcoming hotel and restaurant infused with love, one that has put Ballarat on the map as a luxe destination.

29

“The best compliment we receive is that people notice all the little touches that we’ve spent time refining”

30

The delightful Gorgi Coghlan invites us to visit Ballarat’s Provincial Hotel, where regional accommodation and dining has been taken to a whole new level.

Q&A

How did you come to take on The Provincial Hotel? It fell into our laps serendipitously, the owners wanted someone to take over the venue and give her some much needed love. My husband and I wandered through the building and we could immediately see her potential. Despite knowing how much work it was going to be, we both instantly fell in love. What sort of state was The Provincial Hotel in when you took over? The building needed a lot of work. We had to start from scratch with interior design and we did a compete overhaul with texture, style and colours. We completely redesigned and rebuilt the restaurant, we added eight new hotel rooms and we injected love, texture, femininity and warmth. What is the philosophy behind The Provincial Hotel? My husband and I were traveling in Paris with our daughter, and we were reflecting on how much we love spending time in hotels where you feel like you’re visiting someone’s beautiful home. When there’s attention to detail, passion and love poured into everything, you never want to leave. We wanted to create that same feeling for our guests in our boutique hotel in Ballarat. The best compliment we receive is that people notice all the little touches that we’ve spent time refining. I love it when people say that they feel as though they have spent time in our home because it really is an extension of us, and what we love in life. People leave feeling nourished and want to return. She’s sophisticated but playful.

Gorgi relaxing in one of the Provincial Hotel’s beautifully appointed guest rooms

What drew you to Ballarat as a destination? My husband is a Ballarat boy, and we live on a farm just outside of town. It’s the best of both worlds, a close-knit community with excellent health, education and culture and we have the serenity of the farm and connection to Mother Nature. We’re also only an hour and 20 minutes from Melbourne. Ballarat’s hospitality scene is so exciting and dynamic and we’re seeing more and more people want to start up restaurants and bars which is wonderful to see. Who designed the fit-out of Lola and your hotel accommodation rooms? What was the inspiration behind the design? I had a really clear vision of what I wanted the hotel and the restaurant to feel and look like, it needed to reflect the Victorian heritage, so I was keen to inject antiques and warm wood, but I also wanted stunning contemporary fabrics and standout upholstery pieces. I visited several properties in Australia and overseas and built a great design team with Kath Mills and Genevieve Wallis. We all bounced off each other and drew on each other’s skills to create the look and I’m super proud of what we achieved. People love it and feel like they’ve landed in Paris when they arrive. How has the last 18 months impacted your life and running a business through the COVID pandemic? Super tough. It’s been really hard as owners and really hard for our team. It’s been extremely stressful, however we are so lucky to have loyal and supportive guests who return and book out the hotel as soon as we’re out of lockdown, so the bounce back has been rapid and strong. We’re also seeing a shift in our target market, which means new guests who would normally be in Europe are coming to stay with us to get their French fix, along with friends of people who have stayed with us and recommended us. So there’s always a silver lining. We are very much looking forward to no more lockdowns, it’s so crushing for small business.

The European inspired Lola Restaurant

How do you balance running a thriving hotel/restaurant with a successful television career and life in the country? I’m fierce with my time management and boundaries! I love having my finger in different creative pies so it’s down to how I manage my energy with people and projects. Life on the farm completely re-energises me and our property is my sanctuary. It fills my cup. The hotel is super busy, I really love the creative collaborations I work on, and I’m always striving to grow and develop our brand. I’m also able to stay energised and grounded through my mental and physical toolbox - meditation, exercise, very little alcohol (I don’t drink at all these days) and eating well. I’m a big gardener and that really helps me to stay mindful and live in the moment. Mother Nature is the best healer and teacher. What’s next for The Provincial Hotel and the Coghlan family? We are just about to launch an exciting extension of our brand so watch this space! It’s going to offer a really exclusive opportunity for our guests to enjoy a unique country experience so I’m in the middle of styling and designing that. I’ve also just decided to leave The Project so that’s really exciting, I’m ready for new adventures, more singing and time to work out what I want to do in my career next. @theprovincialballarat @lolaballarat theprovincialballarat.com.au Photographer Tara Moore photography Marcel Aucar photography

The Entrepreneur

Miss Amara

Meet Hong Kong based duo, Alexandra and Aaron, the powerhouse team behind the popular Miss Amara rugs.

Q&A

Tell us about yourselves? Where do you live and what do you do? We are a young Australian couple running our business remotely whilst living in Hong Kong with our Frenchie puppy Gigi. The founders and creators of Miss Amara, Alexandra is the creative director, whilst Aaron manages the finance and business operations. We like to think we make a great team and are proud of the business we have created. More than that we feel like we have found our purpose - designing beautiful product (floor rugs) and providing our customers lots of home inspiration to change up your space, and make your house a home that inspires happiness. A motto we live and breathe! Do you have design backgrounds? What’s your personal story? It is in my DNA to find beauty in life whether that be home styling, fashion or putting on an event, but I am also constantly looking out for business opportunities - I never quite prescribed to the whole right brain left brain as I’m a perfect 50/50 split of both! When I left school, I had no idea what I wanted to do so I panicked and signed up to architecture literally the night prior to the cut off just because I loved beautiful spaces! I think the biggest thing that taught me was placement and orientation and how elements work together. Which I use every day when I design rugs or share a social story. After all of that, I accidentally fell into a career in technology - I loved it for the problem-solving element and that’s when I met Aaron - he was also in technology and whilst advising to a search company used to tell me how he couldn’t believe how many people were searching for rugs online despite the experience being terrible. So, we decided to fix the problems that existed in the space at the time and the rest is history. Tell us about the rise of Miss Amara? How did you achieve the success that you have? It’s so crazy to think back to where it began - an idea around just

creating the most exceptional and uncomplicated journey to buying the perfect rug. Both of us risked it all, because we believed that the rug industry well and truly needed a shakeup. A large part of our success has been around our partnership, and lucky for us our skillset is very different (me being the creative and Aaron being operational) but it is complimentary. People are always shocked that we make it work together as husband and wife and business partners, but I think no matter who your business partner is, you need to be aligned in your business and personal goals and we wouldn’t have it any other way. How would you describe your style? That’s so tough I’ve often asked people what my style is - and other people say eclectic, but to me that makes me think of hoarders! I do often incorporate different styles but I do it in a clean and minimalist way, generally neutrals and raw, lighter tones speak to my soul but I love a pop of pink or peach and try to incorporate colour through statement art and textural elements like vintage cushions. I’m always inspired by places like Greece and Mexico and I always strive to have that always on holidays feel in my home and do that with texture and tone. Your best interior design tip? I know it can be really tempting but try not to follow trends. It is easy to get bored of pieces or want to throw them out totally when the next big trend comes in. When you’re trying to understand what style speaks to you, think of your favourite elements and spaces of hotels around the world you love and speak to your soul. Then find ways to incorporate this vacation feel into your home. I’ve used this as a blueprint to styling my home and I love everything. Other than that, work with the layout you have - every room is different, and the placement of furniture is everything. Always consider HOW it is you want to use the space and lastly - always go big with your rug, you can always trick the eye to a feeling of more space with the colour and sheer size of the rug. Greatest budget buy or budget decorating tip? Have you ever heard the expression high low when it comes to fashion? Splurge on the shoes and the bag and then mix in some budget thrift dresses or basics? Well, I take this approach with my home. I generally tend to splurge on statement art pieces and comfort pieces like couches and armchairs. However, you will also find some IKEA pieces in my home, thrift store vases I have painted over, and one of our main walls have these two gorgeous tea towels that I have framed and people ask me about them constantly!

Tell us about living in Hong Kong. What’s your favourite way to spend a day in your region/home? Hong Kong is the most wonderful city, when people say it is like the New York of Asia they are bang on! The vibe and electricity and the mix of cultures and food make this city a playground. On the weekend we spend our time hiking with our dog Gigi - who we’re often keeping up with, and then we will stroll into the city, and the thing about Hong Kong is, you never need a plan things unfold as you walk around the markets, and the beautiful old streets. I spend a lot of time at Soho House in Hong Kong where members from the creative industry gather and share ideas, I find it so incredibly inspiring. Another thing in Hong Kong that is huge is buffets, they are essentially like the breakfast ritual in Australia, where we catch up with friends over a gigantic spread! Is there any better way to catch up? After a tumultuous 2020 and the pandemic have you made any changes to your life? 2020 has been a ride for all of us, but out of the chaos came some really positive moments and learnings. For us personally, we had a big wedding planned back home, but ended up getting married at home on our rooftop and really enjoyed the intimacy of having just a handful of close friends. When the pandemic hit, we knew that health and fitness would be a challenge so we really focused on cooking at home and now we really enjoy the simple pleasures of setting a beautiful table, lighting candles and just finding the indulgences in every moment - especially the simple ones! @missamaraloves @alexandratanya missamara.com.au

A once dilapidated and burnt out compound tucked away in the Gold Coast hinterland, The Block’s Carlene and Michael Duffy have carved this unique property into their own tropical escape. WORDS: KATY HOLLIDAY IMAGES: MINDI COOKE

The calming simplicity of a nook to take timeout should never be underestimated. Carlene and Michael used Foamworld Burleigh for the cushions on the built-in bench seating. The fabric is callled ‘Grasstree’ from These Walls.

arlene and Michael Duffy purchased their dream property in the lush Tallebudgera surrounding back in 2009. “Our first home was a little old beach shack in Labrador, on the Northern end of the Gold Coast, which we sold to buy our Tallebudgera home,” Carlene tells us. “Michael used to scour realestate.com.au as a bit of a hobby and stumbled across this place by chance.” What started as a bare concrete slab surrounding an oversized swimming pool, and a three-storey house damaged in a fire and left uninhabitable, has taken over a decade of love, hard work and patience to become the modern coastal sanctuary it now is for the Duffy family. “We bought this place ten years ago and we’ve been slowly chipping away at it ever since. Our renovations have been staged, which has allowed us to live here through it all,” Carlene says. The house has quite the history. In another life it was student housing, and before that the property was a clubhouse to a nature retreat. The dynamic duo were well-equipped for the job at hand. “Michael is a carpenter and licensed builder, and I developed a passion for interiors during maternity leave with baby number two. I had an insatiable appetite for all things design and would consume design imagery around the clock. It helped me in defining my style.” Appearing on The Block in 2014, with the hopes of winning enough money to complete their home, the couple has since leveraged the experience as a platform to showcase their work to the design world. In 2015, they launched a full-service interior design and styling studio called Cedar & Suede. Carlene, Michael, their children Paddy and Stella and labrador Harry, now enjoy the rewards of their efforts in the sophisticated compound home. It’s the kind of place you might get lost in, exploring the multitude of detail in the design, build

Carlene and Michael call the rumpus room the ‘green room’. The entertainment units are from IKEA, the sofa is the Santa Monica petite modular from Plush Sofas and the gallery wall is made up of a collection from over many years

Exposed bricks from PGH Bricks and Pavers plus some quirky objects the family has owned for ages make up this eclectic living room.

The panelling in the master bedroom is painted in Resene’s ‘Mantle’. 45

L – R: BATHROOM Carlene and Michael have used marble mosaic tiles from National Tiles paired with Easycraft panels for extra texture and interest. STELLA’S BEDROOM The saturated wall colour of Resene’s Maddison, brings a sense of calm and cohesion to the bedroom. BREEZEWAY Deco Rugs line the breezeway creating warmth plus durability. STAIRWELL Carlene and Michael kept the original brickwork with all its imperfections, holding onto to some of the history of the original home. SITTING AREA Carlene and Michael love adding built bench seating, a lovely place to sit that brings the outside in. HOMEOWNERS Carlene and Michael Duffy. and styling, and it’s easy to see it has been a true labour of love. When asked what the biggest challenge was for the family, Carlene tells us it was the sheer scale of the project. “Everyone thought we were nuts taking on a project like this, but we were in love... And, here we are. We were young and blissfully ignorant. We’re also innate optimists which helps,” Carlene muses. Positioned up high in the hinterland, the afternoon breeze drifts through the breezeway that connects the old part of the house with the new. Surrounded by native trees, the Duffy’s welcome the chorus of birds and other fauna that frequently visit. “The house wraps around the pool allowing us to take in the water at every angle, but being flanked by ginormous, ancient gum trees is really what makes this property feel like such an oasis,” Carlene says. With its brick tower and black timber cladding, the exterior has a certain modern mid-century, palm springs vibe while blending into the environment. “The brick tower provides a strong contrast and it was important to me that it not be repeated anywhere else on the front facade.” The mix of black cladding and white window frames was inspired by men’s clothing store Rod and Gunn, situated on Hastings Street in Noosa. “I fell in love with the modern-coastal, barn-like feel,” she says. Michael put his carpentry skills to good use constructing the front door from blackbutt.

The ensuite is Michael’s favourite room of the renovation. The couple used the same materials and colours from the main bathroom but with a completely different effect

Inside their luxurious home, Carlene has carefully selected a palette of blues and greens, with pops of salmon combined with the texture of brown timber furniture and leather accents. “Layering shades of the same colour is the ultimate way to create a resolved, calm and cohesive space, regardless of the colour,” Carlene tells us.

47

Describing her style as “eclectic” and “a meshing of styles with always a touch of Australiana”, the interior decor has a timeless appeal heightened by the Easycraft Easy VJ panelling painted in Resene Mantle - perhaps echoing the leaves of the giant gum trees framing the property. The effect is modernised by the vast polished concrete floors, sleek appliances, and general spaciousness of the home. In the kitchen, a circular dining booth has been custom-built into the stone island bench. It’s a cosy yet sophisticated nook, where the Duffy’s enjoy breakfast together. The main bedroom is a relaxing and quiet space to retreat to, while the couple’s master ensuite is a stand-out with its black aluminium shower screen handcrafted by a local welder, and White Cloud marble mosaic wall tiles create a sense of opulence. For the Duffy’s, their home is all about the lifestyle it provides. The property feels remote and secluded, yet it’s just 15 minutes from the Gold Coast beaches and amenities. “The Gold Coast is just a very cool place to live. We love a morning beach session followed by a cruisy afternoon at home just pottering about,” Carlene says. “We’re beach-goers and bush walkers. We’ve got the best of all the worlds here. There is honestly nowhere I’d rather live.” @michaelandcarlene @cedarandsuede cedarandsuede.com.au The rumpus room’s Easycraft panelling is painted in Resene’s ‘Mantle’.

The kitchen cabinetry from Freedom Kitchens is in slate green with the benchtops from WK Quantam Quartz. The booth seat is custom designed by Dog Thumbs Design and the pendant light is from Beacon Lighting.

“Everyone thought we were nuts taking on a project like this, but we were in love... And here we are. We were young and blissfully ignorant. We’re also innate optimists which helps,”

The west facing livingroom design has evolved over the years. The room features polished concrete flooring by OzGrind. The sofa is from Plush Sofas, the side table from HK Living and a Jai Vasicek bowl sits atop the coffee table that Carlene found from RSPCA Australia.

Stella’s bedroom is painted in Resene’s ‘Madison’ with bedding from Kip & Co. The artwork is a photo from a session that the family did with photographer Tess Leopold and the wall lights are from Sokol.

The main bathroom is a mix of modern classic, meets mid century, meets Australiana. The ‘Black Mountain’ oak timber floors are from Decorug and the VJ panelled door is from Hume Doors ‘Accent49 Range’ and painted in Resene’s ‘Blue Smoke’.

The interior of the home was painted with Dulux Natural White, the floors were refinished and the joinery updated before Jessi added new furniture and decor to the home to create the laid-back Scandinavian retreat, boasting a palette of rich tones and layers of luxe textures that seamlessly create an illusion of spaciousness. It was important to the owner that her home be an inviting space for entertaining. The living and dining area flow seamlessly onto the courtyard, where there is a ten-seater dining space set beneath festoon lights and surrounded by lush, tropical pot plants. “I love the cosiness and connection of these two spaces with the outlook to the light-filled courtyard,” Jessi says. “I imagine this all opened up on a summer’s evening to extend the space while entertaining.” With sustainability a large part of the brief, Jessi incorporated high-quality investment pieces that she says are built to last well beyond a season. “Instead of trend-focused purchases, we favoured ethically sourced, natural materials that embodied the homeowner’s eco-conscious values.” Featuring the work of local artisans throughout the home, there is a range of considered furniture and wares. “We couldn’t go past the dreamy linen sofa designed by Aussie stylist Sarah Ellison.” “A cohesive mix of materials was chosen to bring this brief together. Think natural materials like timber, marble, wool and linen with a hint of velvet for that extra touch of luxury,” Jessi says. The talented interior stylist balanced deep rich hues of emerald, navy and mustard with soft greys and warm whites throughout the interior. “The use of colour is somehow energising and romantic, yet calming and grounding at the same time,” Jessi muses. “It’s like the interior invites you in, offers you a glass of red and great conversation while a really chill soundtrack plays in the background.” Instead of trend-focused purchases, Jessi favoured ethically sourced, natural materials that embodied the homeowner’s eco-conscious values.

ydney’s inner-west suburb of Newtown is known for its eclectic and alternative atmosphere with a usually lively nightlife and enviable music scene. Just four kilometres from the city centre, the bustling neighbourhood is dotted with thrift stores, boutiques, restaurants and rooftop bars. The area is also known for its iconic and tightly-held Newtown terrace rows that line the streets, some of them dating back as far as the mid 1800s. Moments from Newtown’s main strip, this double-storey two-bedroom 1980s terrace is a bit of a squeeze with its long and narrow floor plan. The owner, a young female entrepreneur who has resided in the home since 2018, sought-out the help of Interior stylist Jessi Deakin to maximise the space and create a relaxing haven. The dimensions of the home meant Jessi had to carefully plan for furniture. “When working with terrace homes or homes with a small footprint, it’s key to find ways to maximise the space you have to work with by creating multi-functional areas,” Jessi says. Without major renovations or redesign of the layout needed, Jessi instead worked with the owner to come up with custom storage solutions to make the most of limited space. “The entryway has bespoke joinery, incorporating a coat closet complete with a mirror, pull-out shoe cabinet, storage bench and open shelving that doubles as a library to house an extensive book collection, as well as a display feature,” Jessi explains. “We also designed the guest bedroom with multi-tasking in mind.” The wardrobe smartly doubles as a dressing table and a study nook, while the log bedside table can be used as a stool for the study spot.

The Coastal Escape ele HOME chats with Catherine Heraghty, the Creative Director behind The Stables, about designing a beautiful coastal oasis in Caringbah South, NSW. INTERVIEW: KATIE SKINNER IMAGES: THE PALM CO.

64

One of Catherine’s favourite artworks is Nuture by Kara Rosenlund, and to highlight this piece Catherine used Earth wall sconces by Anchor Ceramics. 65

"We love that the home now suits their family and will grow with them over time."

The design brief that Catherine undertook included custom joinery, a master ensuite and downstairs powder room as well as furnishing and styling main areas. Due to the home’s 66 location on the water, Catherine and her clients went for a contemporary coastal feel.

Q&A

Who lives here? Our beautiful long-time clients the Cottens, own this property. Where is the home located? Caringbah South, NSW. How long have the family owned the home and what was their motivation for renovating? The Cottens have owned this property for over six years. They decided they wanted complete a partial renovation in two stages to update the home to suit their family, for practicality as well as aesthetics! Are the Cottens originally from the area? They are not originally from the area but were drawn to the potential of the large home with water views! What was the Cotton’s brief for designing the home? Our client was seeking assistance on the partial renovation and styling of their large family home. This included design of custom joinery, a master ensuite and downstairs powder room as well as furnishing and styling main areas. Due to the location and the client’s personal preferences, they were after a contemporary coastal feel, fully aligned with The Stables aesthetic. What was your inspiration when designing this home? This family home is located in Caringbah South overlooking the water, this influenced our selections as well as our clients love of contemporary pieces.

The lounge room features the Bronte Sofa + Lisa Modular Sofa both by Urban 67 Couture (no longer available) with artwork from Still & All, clay beads from Harper & Wilde, side table from Country Road and cushions from Aura Home.

How would you describe the style of the home? Contemporary coastal. What do you love most about the end result? We love that the home now suits their family and will grow with them over time. The fact that there was over a year between stage one and two speaks to the fact that the pieces and finishes chosen are timeless and will continue to be! Your best interior design tip when designing this home? It is important to consider the practicality of busy everyday family life alongside aesthetics. Favourite room in the home? The combined sitting and main living area, beautiful natural light, a stunning V groove fireplace and our favourite sofa, the Wilfred from Jardan, curved joinery elements – you can’t go past this space. Favourite pieces in the home? We honestly love everything, however, a particular favourite, other than the Wilfred by Jardan, would be one of our favourite artworks called Nuture by Kara Rosenlund, and to highlight this piece we used Earth wall sconces by Anchor Ceramics – more favourite pieces of ours! Biggest splurge? The biggest splurge would have been the Wilfred sofa by Jardan, as well as the custom joinery throughout.

Catherine loves the combined sitting and main living area for the beautiful natural light, V groove fire place, curved joinery elements and the Wilfred sofa from Jardan, curved joinery elements.

The 68 entry sets the coastal contemporary tome and features a love seat from Urban Couture and side table from Fenton & Fenton.

The home is painted in Dulux Lexicon Half throughout.

Greatest budget buy or budget decorating tip? For all the smaller styling elements we simply hit the shops! Big retailers such as Adairs, Country Road, Freedom and even Flower Power have great decorative accessories and cushions suited to styling each space. Keep an eye out for Linen Lovers sales at Adairs and Spend & Save sales at Country Road. @the_stables_ thestables.com.au

The Rise of the She Shed

With more people working from home than ever before, we are all starting to truly understand the value of ditching the daily commute and the ability to be able to throw a load of washing on during the workday. With this change we have seen more time and money spent on creating private escapes at home, whether it be a makeover of your home office or a bigger project, a ‘she shed’. WORDS: Katie Skinner

Nadine’s images: Flore Vallery Radot.

Florist and business owner Nadine Brown has converted three sheds into workspaces on her Southern Highlands, NSW property.

T

he world turned on its axis for most of us in March 2020 and changed life as we know it. For many of us in office-based roles, we started working from home (WFH) full-time. Our world became Zoom meeting after Zoom meeting, navigating home schooling while working and hoping that the neighbour’s dog would pipe down before your meeting with your boss began. And we were the lucky ones, the non-essential workers who did not have to leave home to work on the frontline in our supermarkets, aged care, and hospitals. After many months of WFH we have adapted and for some, we have thrived. Statistics show that over the last 18 months 67 per cent of Australians have been working from home, compared to 42 percent pre-COVID. Many people have turned their spare bedroom into fully equipped office spaces or set-up at the dining room table but then there are those who have taken it to a new level and have built or converted their own she-shed. Florist, Nadine Brown, converted three sheds on her 50-acre Southern Highlands property in New South Wales. She has turned these sheds into workspaces and a studio and has kept her business, Wild Flora Studio, running from home during the pandemic. Nadine now holds short courses from her ivy glasshouse on topics such as business coaching, mentoring and floral training. Nadine describes her space as having a natural warmth and tranquillity which draws her audience, creating a unique form of online learning for the floral industry. ‘We self-renovated, salvaging a dark old shed into a light-filled sanctuary using almost all recycled and repurposed materials - that’s so unique. But, maybe, what I love the most, is the reaction I get as people step into the space - a deep breath and sigh is generally the physical reaction, along with ‘oh I need a space like this in my life’. I think ‘sheds’ have been seen in our society as a masculine space - every man needs a shed, right? Essentially, they are seen as a space for hobbies and tools, and a place to relax, tinker and have time to themselves. But I think that’s exactly what the woman that spend time with me in mine really love and wish they had in their own lives.’

Lesa Lambert, based on the Gold Coast, has created what she calls her hobby hut. A space for Lesa to escape where she makes candles and whitewashes furniture (which she shares on her social media account @mossandtwine), or it can be turned into a spare bedroom when guests visit. Lesa spends at least five hours a day in her hobby hut and it has become her sanctuary to unwind “I do a bit of reading in there, light candles and crack a bottle of wine when my friends come round.” When asked what inspired Lesa to create her hobby hut she says “I actually had a dream one night last year that I walked down the stairs of our house, out of the front door and to my own hobby hut shed. I mentioned it to my husband, Greg, who is a concreter, and he said let’s do it.’ We may not all be so lucky to have the space, the time or the means to create separate dwellings to WFH but even the most basic of spare bedrooms or studies can be turned into a home office to envy. Whether it is a standalone she shed or turning an existing room into a luxe office space, here are our top tips to make it the perfect WFH space! • Natural light and great ventilation are key. No one wants to work in a dark storage closet so forget turning the broom closet into your WFH space. • Choose comfortable, ergonomic furniture. It is fine and well to use the dining room table and chair until your back gives out and you end up with chronic pain. Look into how to set your workspace up ergonomically, we like ergo-plus.com for top tips. • Use clever storage to declutter your workspace. • Add some pot plants. Natures very special way of filtering the air in your home and they make you feel good too. • Add your own personal touches, whether it is art, lamps, rugs, or simply a scented candle, whatever brings you joy. The Garden Party

Creating the Perfect Garden Party As we head into the summer months it is the perfect time to frock up and make the most of the great outdoors by hosting a garden party. Think simple, seasonal food, a great playlist and fully a stocked bar for a laid-back afternoon at home.

Top Tips

1 2

Always have a back-up plan Given our unpredictable Australian weather you can sometimes get four seasons in one day. It’s always wise to have a back-up plan! Bring on the Games Be it a chess board, bocce or hookey, outdoor games add a sense of fun and can be a great icebreaker.

3

Create a Beautiful Table Setting It doesn’t have to expensive or specifically bought for the day. Raid your cupboards and mix and match eclectic pieces or visit your local op- shop or K-Mart for affordable pieces.

4

Use Nature to Decorate Use whatever you have at your fingertips to decorate - palm fronds, eucalyptus branches, lemons, limes, oranges, artichokes, rosemary you name it, you can use whatever you like to create the perfect table setting.

5

Have a self-serve bar cart set up Let your guests mix their own cocktails. Have a full bar cart set up with all the trimmings and let your guests help themselves.

6

Keep your menu easy and seasonal Don’t go in for extravagant, complex meals unless you have a lot of time on your hands and don’t stress out easily. Keep it fresh and seasonal, think lots of salads, roasted seasonal vegetables and simple proteins such as prawns or fish. Add a fresh loaf of sourdough, excellent olive oil and some Australian sea salt, and you have the perfect meal. The last thing you want to do is spend all afternoon in the kitchen.

Make sure you have:

1 2 3 4

A great playlist - tailor it to your guests but if in doubt grab a great chill out playlist. Insect repellent especially in our warmer months.

Sunscreen. Ensure you have sufficient supplies for all guests.

Beautiful lighting for once the sun goes down - fairy lights, festoon 78 lighting and candles to create a beautiful ambience.
