Auction News - The Ivamarie Collection featuring dolls by Joel Ellis
From the journal of Steiff expert and blogger, Rebekah Kaufman, Doll Study Club of Boston, United Federation of Doll Clubs… sharing her thoughts on Ivamarie Rideout and how important she was to so many doll collectors - both novice and those that have been a part of the hobby for generations… “Ivamarie Rideout is the reason I am a member of DSCB and UFDC, the organizations that are so important to me now. I was invited to give a program at the 2012 annual event in Washington, DC. I knew nobody at the convention and was not familiar with UFDC or aware of DSCB. I wandered around the event alone for days. After reviewing the schedule, I realized Boston was part of Region 15, and that Region 15 had a meeting during the convention. As such, I arrived a few minutes before the gathering started and stood outside the doorway. Ivamarie came up to me, took me by the hand, and asked me my name. I responded, and told her I was (Rebekah Kaufman), from Cambridge, Massachusetts, and could I sit in on the meeting to learn more about doll happenings in the Boston area. Then she did something remarkable that I will never forget. She looked me in the eye, agreed I could attend and then she said, ‘Don’t worry, I will always take care of you.’ And from that moment on, in just about all aspects of my life, she did. How did she know? I was a total stranger. But just for a moment in her eyes.”

“Auction News - The Ivamarie Collection” continued from page 10 The doll sisterhood is both strong and magical. I had a similar experience at my first convention with the “late – great” Jean Grout. Enthusiastically, she showed our group the “Highlights” of the convention, with this new, captive audience ready to absorb everything happening in the doll wonderland that is the National Convention! Over the years, I found it amazing, the amount of strength and stamina required to make it through those very early mornings into late nights… and how so many eightysomethings were transformed into little girls, once again playing dolls with their girlfriends. I was one of the fortunate ones to experience Ivamarie’s UFDC program on “Joel Ellis – Early American Doll & Toy Entrepreneur.” She became infatuated with those amazing articulated wooden dolls from Springfield, VT and spent many years trying to piece together their story: She taught us that there were three versions of these dolls produced by toymakers in this area: the oldest, of the socalled Joel Ellis dolls, made only for about a year, was an expensive doll with mortise and tenon, fully articulated body, carved and molded head, and metal hands and black metal boots. There are two other variations of the doll, the most prolific being the Mason and Taylor patent, having jointed body with ball-like joints, curly molded & painted hair metal hands and blue painted metal boots, with a black paper Mason and Taylor label around the waist. Ivamarie had three examples in her collection and spent years trying to find them. Lastly are the dolls with the Martin patent, difficult to identify at first glance … but the distinctive precision joints, similar to the Mason and Taylors… but the metal boots are painted black. We have had Ivamarie’s “cheat-sheet” in our drawer at the dollhouse for years. She was in the process of organizing her research to compile the definitive history of the dolls of Joel Ellis, but sadly, Ivamarie was diagnosed with cancer late in 2020, and in her quiet way battled the disease with the support of her close friends and family, maintaining her privacy, yes… but not wanting to burden others with her health struggles. Proving that the 2020 show hiatus has truly ended, two of our most favorite returned in July. We’re delighted to report that a full complement of shows is once again scheduled for the fall. In July, the doll community came together to spend a wonderful summer week in Baltimore, Maryland, enthusiastically viewing and buying all manner of beautiful dolls and companions. The United Federation of Doll Clubs’ Annual Gail Lemmon, All Dolled Up Valerie Fogel, Convention was held at the Baltimore Marriott UFDC Salesroom Chairman Beautiful Bébés Waterfront hotel from July 19th to July 23rd in an Fritz’s Antique Dolls uplifting setting overlooking the Inner Harbor. Attendees were thrilled to be in the company of fellow doll enthusiasts- collectors, dealers, friends and mentors- to once again view, in the flesh, the many truly breathtaking items on display in the salesroom and throughout the show. Though the 2021 UFDC event was smaller than Nashville 2019, many people traveled across the country, including terrific dealers and collectors. You could feel the pleasure people were experiencing simply being back together. Ron and Robyn Martin Sales were strong throughout the convention as hundreds of dolls sold Straw Bear Antiques just during opening night. Breakout sessions and seminars were well attended and, as always, many exceptional dolls were submitted for Nancy McCray judging in the competitive exhibits. (Antique Doll Collector will feature many of the winning dolls in upcoming months, beginning with a feature in the October 2021 issue.) The Shows Are Back! National Doll Festival (cont’d from page 18) In a parallel event, the National Doll Festival, held at the Holiday Inn Baltimore- Inner Harbor, generated exceptional interest from the many avid doll collectors excited for the opportunity to buy from their dealer friends in person. Dealers from around the country participated in the show and brought along lots of beautiful dolls, exquisite fabrics, companions and other interesting offerings. Sales were robust. For something new, Sweetbriar conducted a successful live doll auction in the Sales Room at the end of the show. More live doll events are coming this fall: the National Antique Doll Dealers Association (NADDA) annual show is in Charleston, South Carolina, from September 10 – 12, 2021. The show includes seminars and a ticketed tour of historic Charleston. We’re excited that the Ohio National Doll Show has resumed and will be held on October 2-3 in Wilmington, Ohio (see their ad on the inside back cover and dealer showcase on page 28) where a coterie of wonderful doll dealers will attend and display their beautiful dolls and accessories. Opportunities to buy abound, plus educational seminars by renowned experts, and a chance to socialize at the English Candlelit dinner featuring Carol Cameron. The Gaithersburg Eastern National Antique to Modern Doll Show, in Gaithersburg, Maryland, run by Stephanie Bellman, will take place on December 4, 2021. And the big news is that Stephanie is planning an additional show on June 4th, 2022. So … we’re delighted to report … the shows are back!

Dolls and Books By Susan Foreman
W
hile I’ve always loved dolls, I have also always loved books. My love for the former has led to my acquiring books that feature dolls as the main characters, or as an essential supporting character to the story. Here are just four of my treasured volumes of doll stories: Adventures of a Japanese Doll, by Henry Mayer, 1901; Racketty-Packetty House, by Frances Hodgson Burnett, 1906 (she is probably best known for A Little Princess, a story that features a doll as a supporting character); the 1930s book, The Talking Dolls, by G.R. Mills and Zaida Nelson with illustrations by the famous Tony Sarg (often known for his marionette designs, including those designed for Madame Alexander in the 1930s); and finally, the 1954 book, Patty Reed’s Doll: The Story of the Donner Party, by Rachel K. Laurgaard.
The first story is somewhat like Pinocchio in that the doll, “Ting-a-ling” remains doll-like while having many adventures among human beings, in which she acts, speaks, and is treated as if she were actually a little girl (insofar as little girls get to ride on storks’ backs). As with Pinocchio, the opening scene is of Ting-a-ling’s creation. However, Mayer’s heroine has no desire to be a real girl and ends up quite happy as a Japanese doll, even if she does have a Chinese name and a boy’s hairstyle, which is perhaps just poetic license on the part of the author. Ting-a-ling was an Ichimatsu-type doll made by the Japanese dollmaker, “the great Chung Wah” “…and was born in old Japan on a fine spring morning.” “’O Tinga-ling!’ said the great Chung-Wah who was a poet in his way, “you are graceful and slim as a willow reed, and I will touch your cheeks with the bloom of the young almond blossoms!’ He waved his brush gracefully in the air and painted her cheeks a delicate pink, so that she became the dearest and sweetest doll of old Japan.” Chung-Wah’s eldest daughter, Yum-Yum created a beautiful kimono for Ting-a-ling, while Chung-Wah’s

second daughter, Ali-Kymo taught Ting-a-ling to walk, dance, sing, speak, and even think. Ting-a-ling was then placed in the display window next to a “charming China Mandarin” who told her of his travels. Ting-a-ling began to long for a glimpse of the wide world. And soon she would get her wish.
This is how her adventure begins: During the course of Ting-a-ling’s creation, Chung-Wah’s Japanese spaniel Bow-Wow became extremely jealous of the new doll. One day the dog got his revenge. He tied a string around Ting-a-ling, attached the string to a big balloon, and watched Ting-a-ling drift away. The balloon popped and Ting-a-ling ended up in the middle of a pond, whereupon Mr. Stork rescued her and carried her to his home. . . in Germany! When Mrs. Stork asked if she wanted to go back to Japan, Ting-a-ling replied, “not straight back, but in a kind of roundabout straight way.” From Germany, Mr. Stork carried Ting-a-ling upon his back to Egypt to view The Sphinx. And then, of all things, a camel carried Ting-a-ling across the African continent where she was once again reunited with Mr. Stork. Together they encountered not only a lion, but two Zulu children playing tennis. After reaching the end of Africa, Mr. Stork made a right turn and “deposited our little friend in the very middle of an American prairie.” And of course, she soon met Cowboys and Indians. Mr. Stork then told Ting-a-ling they must visit Lapland, where she acquired a fur coat and went ice fishing. In this roundabout way, they ended up in Switzerland, where Ting-a-ling met Liserl and Fritz, acquired a traditional Swiss outfit (think Heidi), and climbed many mountains. Then it was on to Venice, where Mr. Stork became a gondolier and Ting-a-ling, once again wearing her kimono, glided along canals. After celebrating Carnival in Venice, it was off to dance with
village children in the Black Forest, then to Holland to see windmills, before skipping to the bagpipe music in Scotland, and eventually arriving in London. What do you suppose happened in London? Ting-aling saw her friend, the “Nodding Mandarin,” in Ye Olde Curiosity Shop. How the Mandarin arrived in London remains a mystery, but upon seeing Ting-a-ling a “ … greedy, grasping thought crossed the wicked mind” of the mercenary shopkeeper. . . he picked her up and placed her in the shop window right next to the Mandarin. . . Thankfully the stork rescued them both and carried them back to Chung-Wah’s house in Japan. Once there, Tinga-ling and the “Nodding Mandarin” agreed they would never leave one another again. This is such a charming story. You can almost feel the author’s joy in composing and illustrating the delightful tale. Note: with many things today being termed “politically incorrect,” it is essential to read such stories in the spirit of the year in which they were written, in this case 1901.

Racketty-Packetty House by Frances Hodgson Burnett, 1906
While we may be more familiar with France Hodgson Burnett’s Little Princess, Lord Fauntleroy, or Secret Garden, the Racketty-Packetty House is absolutely charming. Written in 1906, it tells the story of two dollhouses: the shabby old Racketty-Packetty House lived in by raggedy but jovial dolls, and the fancy new Tidy Castle House, home to a snobbish, exquisitely-attired doll family. The narrator is Queen Crosspatch, the Queen of the Fairies. Queen Crosspatch begins by telling the reader: “Now this is the story about the doll family I liked and the doll family I didn’t. When you read it you are to remember something I am going to tell you: This is it: If you think dolls never do anything you didn’t see them do, you are very much mistaken. When people are not looking at them they can do anything they choose. If anyone looks, they just stop. Fairies know this and of course Fairies visit in all the dolls’ houses where the dolls are agreeable. They will not associate, though, with dolls who are not nice. They never call or leave their cards at a dolls’ house where the dolls are proud or bad-tempered. They are very particular. If you are conceited or ill-tempered yourself, you will never know a fairy as long as you live.” Cynthia, the child in the story, inherited 30

Racketty-Packetty from her grandmother. When RackettyPacketty House was new, during Queen Victoria’s days, it was quite elegant and all the “jointed Dutch dolls” quite well dressed, and it was referred to as, “The Dolls House.” However, over the years it had become worn and the dolls’ clothes tattered. On Cynthia’s birthday, she received the exquisite new Tidy Castle with dolls in elegant dress. Cynthia, not the nicest of children to begin with, could no longer stand to look at RackettyPacketty (the name she had given to “The Dolls House” due to its condition) and had it banished to the corner of the nursery behind the door. While no longer in a fashionable neighborhood, the dolls continued to be happy while the snobbish new neighbors in the high class neighborhood looked down upon them. Of course the story becomes more complicated when Racketty-Packetty’s Peter Piper falls in love with the Castle’s Lady Patsy (and the only Castle doll that was not snobbish). Now Cynthia, being a rather cruel child, decides that all the dolls in the Castle will suffer scarlet fever (Lady Patsy having agreed to marry outside her station is spared, as she did not return to the Castle). But the Racketty-Packetty family comes to the

rescue, goes to the Castle and cures the Castle people, resulting in a new appreciation and respect from the Castle Family towards the Racketty family. But an even greater tragedy is on the horizon when Cynthia decides to have Racketty-Packetty burned. The Princess is coming to visit, and Cynthia could not bear to have her see the shabby house. Queen Crosspatch and her team of fairies save the day and, consequently, save Racketty-Packetty from the flames. The Princess arrives and falls in love with Racketty-Packetty because it was like her grandmother’s The Talking Dolls (Victoria’s) dollhouse. Cynthia gifted by G.R. stopping until he reached the pond. Shirley and the dolls fell safely to the ground, but the elephant was in a frisky mood; he grabbed Frances and ran with her in his trunk. They couldn’t catch him, it was getting dark, Shirley and Annabel were hungry, and they worried about Frances. Then who should come along—The Organ Grinder. He said, “we get some supper then I take home to Poppa.” And that is how they met the Gypsies. The Gypsy Queen would not let Shirley go home and threw Annabel out the window exclaiming, “no time for doll, work all time now.” When Shirley was sent outside to do a chore, not only did she find Annabelle, but also the missing horse, Prince. It seems that the gypsies had stolen Prince. Shirley got on Prince and, with Annabel under her arm, whispered “Home, Prince.”
What a wonderful homecoming. Prince was a hero and Mr. White agreed to sell Prince to Shirley’s dad. But Frances was still missing. . . and then the doorbell rang, and there stood the clown from the circus holding Frances, whom he had rescued from the wayward elephant. All lived happily ever after. When I first acquired this book I had recently purchased a Madame Alexander Dopey marionette designed by Tony Sarg. So, when I saw that he was the illustrator of The Talking Dolls, I was quite excited. While I had always associated Tony Sarg with puppets and marionettes, I soon learned that he was also a popular illustrator 32

and children’s book author. During the 1920s, he created elaborate window displays for Macy’s, was the artistic director of the Macy’s Christmas Parade (now called the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade), and, in 1927, introduced the oversized inflated balloon characters which have become the hallmark of the parade. He also designed a variety of children’s products, such as textiles, wallpapers, and furniture, which he retailed through his own children’s shops in New York and Nantucket. Sadly this talented man died in 1942 from complications after an appendectomy. And I learned all this because I read a child’s book of 1930s.
Rachel Kelley Laurgaard wrote Patty Reed’s Doll as a master’s thesis at Sacramento State College (now known as California State University, Sacramento), where she also taught English. She lived for many years in Oakland, where she died in 2000 It was the winter of 1846, when the Reed family joined with the Donner family and left Springfield, Illinois for Patty Reed’s Doll… The Story of the Donner Party the promised land of By Rachel K. Laurgaard 1954 California. Known as the “Donner Party,” this is their story as seen through the eyes of a 4” tall, Grodnertal-type doll. Of the 83 members of the Donner Party who were trapped in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, only 45 survived to reach California. Among the survivors was Patty Reed (age 8 at the time) and her beloved little wooden doll that she carried in her pocket throughout the year-long journey from Springfield to Sacramento.

Ms. Laurgaard “pieced the story together from authentic letters, journals and reminiscences of Donner Party survivors. It is also the heartwarming tale of how a little girl’s love for her precious doll can transcend all danger.” Patty married Frank Lewis in 1856, had eight children, and, throughout her life, she told her children and then her grandchildren that this little wooden doll was her “oldest friend and someday will be the sole survivor of the ill-fated Donner Party. Then she must go back to Sutter’s Fort to tell the story of the children and their dolls who crossed the plains in ‘46.” “Dolly” was donated to Sutter’s Fort in 1946, on the hundredth anniversary of the Reed family’s infamous journey. For 70 years, “Dolly,” considered the most wellknown artifact of the ill-fated Donner Party incident, has greeted guests at the museum. In the spring of 2020, California State Parks undertook important preservation efforts to extend the life of this treasured doll, and thus enable “Dolly” to continue to tell her story for generations to come. There are many other marvelous books in my collection. Due to space constraints, I will conclude for now. Thank you for allowing me to share my love for both dolls and books; they both are indeed magical.

THE MARY HOYER STORY by Donna W. Brown
M
ary Hoyer began her career working in her sister’s needlework store in 1926. Soon she and her husband, William, founded the Juvenile Styles Publishing Company to sell her original children’s clothing patterns for both knitting and crocheting. In 1935, they opened a yarn shop located in Reading, Pennsylvania. Mary’s patterns for children and babies were selling well, but she wanted to expand. One day Mary had an inspiration. Why not sell a doll and patterns that matched the children’s designs that were already popular? In 1935 she found an inexpensive, slim 14 inch composition doll with twist waist, sideglancing painted eyes and a mohair wig. The doll was manufactured by Ideal, and today it is very rare. Her knitted patterns for this doll found quick success. Mary contacted doll sculptor Bernard Lipfert in 1937 to create her own composition doll. These composition dolls were made by the Fiberoid Doll Products Company, and most are marked with a raised print, “The Mary Hoyer Doll.” To meet the various needs of consumers, Mary offered the doll dressed, or with only shoes and stockings. Kits of fabric or yarn were available, as were ready-to-wear fashions sewn in her store. At first, clothing kits had the clothes cut out and the advertisements stated

that only a needle and thread were needed to complete the clothing. Later, kits had the pattern and fabric included but were not ready to assemble. Mary created 15 pattern books for her dolls over the years, called Mary’s Dollies. Volume 5, from 1941, sold for 20 cents and began with a letter from Mary. “Every little girl loves to play Mama with her dolly. Especially when she can dress dolly in clothes that were hand knitted or crocheted by you (dolly’s grandma).” There were six patterns in the volume: a Princess Dress and Beret, a Ski Suit, a Bathing Ensemble, a Sport Suit, a Skating Outfit, and a Party Frock (trimmed in angora). Each outfit had a girl’s name, including Mayree, Julianna, and Arlene. During World War II, the pattern booklets featured war-themed outfits with Miss Victory sending, “V mail to her V male.” Volume 11, in 1948, had a centerfold advertisement for a ready-made bridesmaid gown or a kit to make one. The doll dressed as a bridesmaid sold for $6.45. A kit to make the dress with a doll, hat, and panties was $3.50. The kit to make the gown only was $1.75. A boy doll was added in 1947, and the 1950 Volume 13 offered matching clothing for both the doll and her twin brother, including western outfits and skating clothes.

After the war, the doll industry boomed, and the Mary Hoyer doll became a delicate hard plastic girl with the logo, “Original Mary Hoyer Doll” in a circle on her back. Several wigs were used over the years. On the composition doll they had been mohair, then originally saran on the hard plastic doll, and later highquality Dupont Nylon that could be washed and curled. Several early advertisements stated there were wigs of real hair.

The same doll mold was used by multiple companies. Many are lower-quality dolls that are unmarked or are labeled Made in USA in a circle. Some clone dolls with Mary’s face were also used by small local companies, and others can be found that were sold as nun dolls for church fundraisers. The Richwood Toy Company, located in Larchmont, NY, used the mold for their Cindy Lou doll. Cindy Lou was of high quality and comparable to Mary Hoyer’s dolls. In 1946, the Hoyers opened a second shop on the boardwalk in Ocean City, NJ and their business boomed. Many women in southern New Jersey still recall how their childhood vacations were highlighted by visiting the Mary Hoyer store and choosing a doll or a new outfit. They recall they would study the advertisements in their mother’s magazines all winter, dreaming of the unique accessories and outfits. Kits of both fabric and yarn, ready-to-wear fashions, and accessories accounted for most of the company’s profit. Accessories included golf bag and sticks 35c, terry robe 75c, boots 25c, parasol $1.00, Dutch wooden shoes 25c. If a doll was broken, a new head could be purchased for $1.25 and a leg for 50c. In the 1950s, Mary Hoyer decided that it was time to expand her doll’s wardrobe. She designed 52 elaborate gowns that represented the 50 states plus District of Columbia and Canada. Near her home in eastern Pennsylvania, she organized many fashion show luncheons, each featuring unique new gowns. The events served as fundraisers for churches and charitable organizations. Each event had a theme, such as Miss America or Story Book Characters, and her exquisite designs were coveted by many young girls and their mothers. Mary’s sister, Jane, began the festivities by entertaining the children in the audience with stories and songs. A panel of judges would choose a doll as the winner and, following the luncheon, the participating dolls would be for sale in their Reading store. Instructions for the Fashion Show designs were available in pattern booklets following each event. A gorgeous 18 inch doll with closed mouth and thick hair was offered in 1954. She was named Gigi, and there were only 2,000 manufactured. She is a strung doll and has the same logo, “Original Mary Hoyer Doll” in a circle on her upper back. Other companies used unmarked clones of Gigi, and they are Mary Hoyer Gigi doll, photo courtesy of not authentic. By 1957, young girl dolls were losing popularity and fashion dolls with high heels were the rage, as were their stylish outfits. To compete, Mary Hoyer entered the fashion doll market with a 10.5-inch, 12-inch and 14-inch Vicky doll. She was made by Uneeda, marked Uneeda on her neck. Vicky was actually their Suzette doll. Soon they eliminated the two larger Vicky dolls and kept only the 10.5-inch doll to compete with other fashion dolls like Little Miss Revlon. Vicky had beautiful ready-to-wear, tagged outfits, but was only sold for a few years. Unless Vicky is found in an original, tagged outfit or box, it is impossible to identify her.

In 1958, Mary Hoyer sold her Margie doll, a 10-inch vinyl toddler doll with short rooted hair marked AE. In 1960, Mary Hoyer sold a 10-inch infant doll with molded hair wearing a christening gown. Both were the same dolls that were sold by other companies, so it is difficult to identify them, and they were never as popular as the original hard plastic Mary Hoyer doll. Times were changing, and in 1960, they closed the Ocean City store. As mothers entered the workforce in droves, they had less time to sew and to teach their little girls the pure joy of creating outfits for their dolls. In 1972, Mary Hoyer and her husband William closed their Reading, PA store and retired to Florida. Mary published an extensive book on her dolls in 1982, Mary Hoyer and Her Dolls, which highlighted the history of her company and contained more than 100 original patterns to knit, crochet, and sew. In addition to patterns for the 14-inch hard plastic doll, there are also several for Gigi and Vicky. In 1988, Mary’s granddaughter, Mary Lynne Saunders, reopened a Mary Hoyer doll shop in Reading PA. Her first doll was, “The Doll With the Magic Wand.” This doll and six others were based on a fairy tale written by Mary Hoyer many years before as a bedtime story for her granddaughter. In 1990, the tale was published as a book. Mary Lynne continued to design new series of Mary Hoyer dolls with exquisite fashions, and they met with great success. In 1989, Mary Lynne followed in her grandmother’s footsteps once again and began hosting luncheons for her dolls and their fans. Mary’s great granddaughter, Jodie, continues the family tradition

of being involved in the doll business and has created three dolls, Willa, Jodie and her Italian friend, Arabella. The dolls and their fashions are currently available on www.maryhoyerdoll.com, one doll with two outfits sells for $300. The Mary Hoyer Doll Company can also be found on Facebook. 1992 Mary received a Lifetime Achievement Award by the International Doll Academy and Doll Reader Magazine. Mary Hoyer passed in 2003 at the age of 101 but will always be remembered as a woman with a vision who enriched the lives of thousands of young girls with her sweet little doll. q

My Birthday Carousel By Debbie Biggness
The 1880s German Carousel
or some reason my husband felt that my approaching birthday was a big deal. I saw it as just another day, but he was adamant that sixty-five was a milestone and could not be ignored. With the pandemic just beginning to wind down, travel was not an option and he insisted on getting something special to commemorate this “celebratory moment” in my life (his words, not mine). He tasked me with finding a special gift. Maybe a bucket list doll? The search began. 40

My first attempt at finding the milestone gift was to travel 2 ½ hours south to an in-house auction in Cape Coral. There was one particular item I was really interested in – an 1850s sterling silver children’s tea set in its original silk lined box. However, after spending 3 hours in the Florida heat, with one highly motivated bidder outbidding everyone on everything, we decided that another two hours waiting for my item to come up for auction, only to be outbid, was not in our best interest.

We headed back home, searching for a nice restaurant along the way – good food is always a panacea for disappointment. At least once a week thereafter, my husband would ask if I had found anything special. I have to admit, my disappointment in losing the silver tea set negated my desire to look for anything else. However, we had the Maitland Doll Show to look forward to! For over a decade I have purchased a couple of tables at this show and this would be the first time in a year and a half that I would participate in a doll show! I was so excited! To be able to see and socialize with real people again!!!

We arrived at the doll show by 8am and the energy was evident. Everyone was so excited to be back. I had four tables to set up – two for me, one for my sister (who had bailed on me, but I had brought her items with me to sell), and a fourth table as a fundraiser for my doll club. A lot to be accomplished in an hour and a half. My husband had come with me (he knows all of the dealers as well as I do) and helped me carry my items into the hall. But, from that point on, the setup is all on me, leaving me free to roam the hall and socialize.

Now, my husband will loudly declare to anyone willing to listen that he is NOT a doll collector. However, he can identify almost any doll as readily as I can (and has found me some real gems over the past three decades), and he can restring a doll for me in 10 minutes flat. He is, however, a vintage toy collector (he does have seven Bucherer dolls in his collection and will justify their existence by his fascination with their metal bodies). So, when he returned an hour later, excitedly talking about this antique carousel that I just had to see, I knew there had to be a toy component as well as a doll component to this “incredible find!” Another 45 minutes passed before I felt comfortable with my four-table setup. The doors to the doll show were going to open in 10 minutes. Handing him my money pouch, and under his vague directions, I headed out in search of this fantastic item. I found it five minutes later. The vendor was not at her booth, so I inspected every inch of the carousel without touching it. The carousel was just as my husband said – it was fantastic! It stood approximately two feet wide by two feet high. The sales tag described it as an 1880s German carousel. No price listed. The highly decorative carousel contained seven galloping wooden and papier mâché horses, two rocking swans, two benches, and two spinning “tea cups”. Ten German dolls were along for the ride. The center of the carousel featured a Gottschalk German pipe organ with the remaining interior decorated with Dresden lace and paper, glass beading, and red silk curtains. Glass beads accented the graceful swans and Dresden paper finished off the walls of the tea cups. Victorian metal braided trim outfitted the exterior of the carousel. The horses were painted in exquisite detail; their manes and tails completed with beige silk thread. Three of the horses were commandeered by 4” German shoulder heads dressed in their

sailor outfits. Two all-bisque girls adorned with large silk hairbows sat in command of their graceful swans. One tiny 2” all bisque jester sat serenely on his bench; tattered remnants of his silk outfit the only hint of his original identity. I glanced at my watch – the doors of the doll show were about to open. Where was the vendor for this booth? Franje Zucchero showed up just as the floodgates of the doll show opened. I quickly asked a few questions. What was the age? 1880s. Manufacturer? German in origin. All original? Yes. Does it turn? Yes, there is a manual crank in the back that allows the carousel to turn counter clockwise; prompting the horses to gallop, swans to rock, and tea cups to spin. And the most important question of all – what is the asking price? I finally exhaled. It was within the scope of my pocketbook. I said I wanted it. Would she accept a check? Could she hold it until the end of the show? To all of which she responded with a yes. There was so much excitement when the doors of the doll show opened – vendors and customers equally excited to be there – it was as if there was a party going on and you would have thought everyone had been quarantined for ten years not one. The 6-hour show flew by. When we were ready to leave, we had to re-pack our Tesla to make room for the two foot-by-two-foot carousel. It easily earned a place of honor on the back seat. Once home with our precious cargo, the carousel commanded pride of place on our dining room table. My grandson, who loves touring my doll room, was instantly
entranced by the carousel. He is obsessed with turning the crank and watching the horses gallop, the swans rock, and the tea cups spin. He is gentle with it and, at the age of five, has acquired a sophisticated appreciation of “all things old” – including his now 65-year-old Nanny. He has an inquisitive mind, asking questions such as, ‘What makes it turn?’ ‘How old is it?’ ‘Who made it?’ ‘Is it the same as the one at Disney World?’ My husband was able to answer the mechanical questions for him. As for me, research is my happy place and the internet my muse. I learned that the word “carousel” originated from the French word “carrousel” which translates to “a tilting match”. It is also known as a Merry-Go-Round, Galloper, Hurdy Gurdy, and Roundabout. A rustic, horse-driven version of the carousel was originally used as a training tool for hunters and jousters in the Middle Ages. By the 18th century, a horse or donkey-driven carousel occupied by basic wooden “horselike” figures began appearing at traveling fairs. By the second half of the 19th century, they appeared at fairgrounds in the form we now recognize as a carousel, with handcarved and painted horses the main attraction. World fairs introduced the public to zoo animals. This fascination with these exotic beasts encouraged the addition of zebras, lions, and ostriches to the carousel. Farm animals such as cows, pigs, and roosters were popular in France. Gondolas, or benches, that allowed for large groups to ride comfortably on the carousel and were also added. fairground organs have been a staple of the fair since the 1840s. Limonaire of France was the primary manufacturer of these large fairground organs. By the 1860s, Limonaire (now the name associated with these organs) had developed a smaller organ that was integrated into the center of the carousel, providing the additional entertainment advantage of music (as well as successfully concealing the carousel’s engine noise). The most prominent German carousel artist in Europe was a man by the name of Michael Denzel. In the 1850s, he sent four of his sons My grandson playing with the carousel to the United States – along with a full-sized carousel secured in the hold of a ship – in hopes of stimulating interest in the American public. That first carousel was set up in Philadelphia and was an instant hit! By 1870, Gustav Denzel has set up a successful carousel and cabinet shop in Germantown, PA. Between 1870 and 1920, the golden age of the carousel in the United States, over 5,000 carousels were built. Today, only 14 Denzel carousels still remain worldwide; seven of those are in the United States. Modern carousels remain a mainstay of resorts, parks, and fairgrounds. The horses continue to be the most popular of the carousel figures, although they are currently made of molded fiberglass rather than hand carved from wood. Most carousels turn in a counterclockwise direction, except for those in England which always turn clockwise, as medieval knights wore their swords on their right hip and had to mount their horses from the left. The average carousel rotates 13 feet per second. Horse and donkey power has been replaced first by steam, then by gasoline, and currently by electricity. The oldest operating carousel currently in the United States (built in 1876) can be found in Watch Hill, Rhode Island, and is called the “Flying Horse”. The oldest operating carousel in the world was built in 1780 and is in Hanau, Germany. I admire my 140-year-old toy carousel daily and completely understand the attraction of these beautiful, 1950s Chein pressed tin carousel entertaining works of art. (Just an interesting fact - my husband paid $1,800 for the carousel. A week later, I Resources: Musee Des Arts Forains, Merriam was gently cleaning it with q-tips and found an old Webster online dictionary, Wikipedia price tag deep inside of one of the swans for $8,500). 44
