DOLLY VARDEN

hen Charles Dickens penned his early novel Barnaby Rudge (published in 1841), he likely had no idea that his character, Dolly Varden, would inspire so many different products over the next one hundred years. Dickens’ novel was set in the late 18th century and soon his beautiful young character’s name would become associated with a revival of the polonaise and underskirt in its new incarnation of the 1870s. These “Dolly Varden” styles included mixed patterns in colorful combinations and were finished with a hat. In addition to inspiring human fashion the McLoughlin Brothers publishing company brought out a series of Dolly Varden paper dolls in the 1880s. The printing technique used by McLoughlin lent itself perfectly to capturing the look of these fashions. Naturally enough the Dolly Varden name also seemed a perfect tie-in to the world of threedimensional dolls. In 1895 the Cuno and Otto Dressel company of Sonneberg, Thüringia, Germany registered their design for a “doll body with painted or printed face” (DGRM 42

227). The company produced these dolls for the American toy industry wholesale house Butler Brothers. Butler Brothers distributed this line of Dolly Varden dolls throughout its many US accounts. Butler Bros. 1899 advertisements showed the simple cloth doll form with a paper or card chromolithographed face. Chromolithography is the multicolor process of printing which was introduced in 1837. These paper faces were embossed and affixed to the cloth head. In 1902 musical stage actress Lulu Glaser found tremendous success in the play Dolly Varden. This in turn stimulated a renewed interest in Butler Brothers’ dolls of the same name. The dolls have been found in sizes of 16”, 11”, and 8”. All have simple cloth heads and torsos, with stub arms and legs. The earliest have the aforementioned printed paper faces but in 1906 the faces were changed to printed cloth. All wore colorful costumes in a mixture of prints and included 16

frilly bonnets which covered the unfinished portion of their heads. In the 1930s the Dolly Varden name was used on a line of doll houses made by Meccano Ltd. of Liverpool, England. The company advertised these as being made of “leatherboard” which was in fact a heavyweight cardboard product with printed exterior and interior details. The primary impetus for making this doll house was to allow this manufacturer, known for making its “Dinky Toys” line of die-cast metal vehicles, to showcase a line of similarly diecast doll house furnishings in an effort to pick up a market for girls’ toys. The Dolly Varden name would also be associated with candies, cakes, china dinnerware patterns, printed fabrics and even a species of trout but for the doll collector it is the often-elusive doll and paper doll forms bearing the Dolly Varden name that are the most fun to search for.

British company Meccano Ltd. advertised their Dolly Varden doll house in the 1930s. This 1936 page from their catalog shows the house and their line of slightly larger than 1/2” to 1’ metal furnishings.

Good morning! I hope you are all well in these troubled times, and that you are all happy working with ADC. Your magazine means such a lot to me, especially these days. I was so pleased to find a pattern in the April issue, and one or two of my dolls will now get a new spring costume. I have also renewed my subscription and another thing, some time ago, you asked your readers some questions which I have tried answering to the best of my best ability, as you can see. To answer your question about what I like most, it is reading about dolls who are about 100 years old. The articles by Samy Odin are favorites. That being said, I read every single word in all the articles, and feel I learn something new every time. Not only about dolls, but about historical events and changing fashions. When a pattern is included, I am overjoyed, and start trying it out immediately, with varying levels of success I may add! As you can see from the included photos, I love the German and French dolly-faced dolls. But my collection include dolls of many makes and materials. I do not focus on one special maker or type of doll, but the doll must “speak “ to me and have an interesting expression. My brother once bought me a doll with tears on her face, and I spent hours trying to make them disappear with paint and what not. bout 1890 the salon pieces of French automaton maker, Leopold Lambert, were in high demand. And while many clients were content with the pretty classic bébé who daintily powdered her face while admiring her image, Lambert saw the opportunity of presenting automaton with an expressive face that more clearly fit with the mechanical action. How about a child who has just broken her favorite doll?

Shouldn’t she be crying? Or a baker exhibiting his playful kitten hidden under a brioche? A mischievous smile surely accentuated that action! But where could he find the models that evinced such expression? Where else but his fellow entrepreneur Emile Jumeau? And thus, the art character models of Jumeau began their life. These automaton heads included various exotic persons as well as laughing, crying and whistling children. And there the Lambert/ Jumeau story takes a twist. The Jumeau Book by François Theimer and Florence Theriault writes of this: “So pleased was Jumeau with this sculptural project that the decision was made to also produce the characters in bébé form…So successful was his endeavor that character bébé models were then added to the line that were first made as automaton heads”. Putting his design team to work, Jumeau reworked the shape of the neck into the classic “light-bulb” shape of the bébé head, rather than the straight-sided neck needed by Lambert. He worked to create a variation in size although petite or grand sizes were never presented. The bébés were offered in sizes 9, 10, 11, 12, and 13 only, with the

exception of models 203 and 211 which were also produced in size 8. Jumeau called these bébés “Series Fantastique.” Yet, sadly, these wonderful dolls failed on the marketplace. Perhaps they were too expressive for a clientele that wanted an idealistically pretty doll for their child. Perhaps it was their expense; the 1899 inventory of the Jumeau firm cites their price which was nine times the price of his standard bébé. At any rate, the bébés appear to have only been presented on special commission or as exhibition models during the short eight years of their existence. The dolls are extremely rare. Evidence lies in the 1899 inventory of the Jumeau firm upon its merging into SFBJ. This was especially true of the 218 model shown on this page. The valuable inventory cites that “only 16 examples” of the 218 model in size 11 existed in the firm’s inventory, and it is probable that most of these were white-complexioned. **see footnote below At the same time, and likely aiming to appeal to the wealthy international traveler who visited Paris, Jumeau introduced his series “Bébés de Quatre Continents” which featured dolls of four different complexion tones ranging from ebony black to light brown to amber to white. While most of the bébés from this series

had the classic tete model face, in an extremely few instances the variant complexions appeared on “Series Fantastique” models. Such an example is the light-brown-complexioned 218 bébé shown on this page. It is the only example known to exist. The Series Fantastique ended in 1899, less than a decade into its life, although, as a last hurrah, the models were featured in a series of postcards created for the 1900 L’Exposition Universelle in Paris. This landmark doll, the browncomplexioned model 218 from the “Series Fantastique,” is featured on the cover of Theriault’s July 2021 Marquis auction catalog, With Just One Apple. **To understand this rarity, note that, in comparison, in 1886 Jumeau sold 130,000 standard bébés, and in 1892 he claimed to employ 1000 workers at this Montreuil factory.

Custom Tudor - Style Dollhouse at The Henry Ford Museum Part 2 By Judit Armitstead
T
here is a hidden gem of a Tynietoy dollhouse out in the open. It is “hidden” because very few Tynietoy collectors are aware of its existence and “out in the open” because the dollhouse is on full display in a prominent part of the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, Michigan. The history of the custom-made Tynietoy Tudorstyle dollhouse has been related in Part 1 in the June issue of Antique Doll Collector. Further descriptions of

the dollhouse and its furnishings are continued here in Part 2. Almena Gray Wilde donated the one-of-a-kind early 1930’s dollhouse, fully furnished with a variety of American and German dollhouse furniture, accessories and dollhouse dolls, to the museum in 1972. The photographs in Figures 1 to 5 were taken by the author during a visit to the museum several years ago. The front side of the elegant Tudor-style dollhouse is illustrated in FIGURE 1. The photograph has been angled so that the exterior walls of one of the side wings and the dining room bay window can be observed. The exterior brick foundation is also visible. The small white sign on the left identifies the donor. As can be seen in FIGURE 2 of the back of dollhouse, the two-floor side wing has a slanted roof and a row of three paned windows only on the second floor room. The previous photo in Figure 1 shows that the 1st floor room only has a small window at the front of the house, but it would be safe to conclude the side panel now in storage more than likely has additional windows.

A closer detail in FIG. 4 FIGURE 3 demonstrates how the two sets of stairs side by side but separated by a wall were created. The spacious main staircase with hallways for the residents runs from the front to the back of the house. The stairs are broad with several landings and can be easily traversed. The door at the bottom seems to lead into a walkin closet under the stairs or is an illusion to stairs leading into the basement which does not exist. Although the servants’ stairs are brightly painted in a lovely aqua blue, in contrast they are steep and narrow and are only in the back portion of the dollhouse. FIGURE 4 pictures a section of the front entrance hall on the 1st floor with stairs and details of French doors with isinglass inserts with painted panes leading into the dining room. The large dining room with bay window on the 1st floor in FIGURE 5 has green stucco walls with dark green painted trim and matching trompe l’ oeil panel doors. There are a few Tynietoy furnishings included in this room such as the Sheraton sideboard with what looks to be a hand-painted portrait above, a spool stand sitting in the bay and a lovely green handwoven rug beautifully coordinated to the colors of the walls and woodwork. The following professional photographs, Figures 6 to 11, were provided by the Henry Ford Museum for this article taken shortly after the donation in 1972. It is believed this is how the dollhouse was furnished by Almena Gray Wilde. During the time between the museum’s photos and the author’s photos, a few items were moved from one room to another. Another view of the dining room in FIGURE 6 demonstrates additional furnishings which include German-made dining room wooden furniture, numerous bisque-head dollhouse dolls, patiently waiting to be served their dinner, and accessories including treen ware dishes and candlesticks, glassware and porcelain. A 3rd floor pale yellow bedroom is pictured in FIGURE 7, which also demonstrates close-up the exterior timbers separating the stucco on the exterior wall at top. The classic Tynietoy light yellow ladderback rocker sits prominently up front accompanied by a Tynietoy handwoven multi-color rag rug. The cream-color bed and matching mirrored dresser look to be German. The metal floor lamp with decorated paper shade is of unknown origin. 38

The spacious 2nd floor hallway and staircase is illustrated in FIGURE 8. Shown is a landing at the top of the photo. The stairs, handrails, and newels with round finials are wood stained just as the floor. The risers and posts have been painted white. As can be seen, every room has at least one door leading into it. A Tynietoy black ladderback armchair sits next to the Tynietoy telephone table whose chair has been placed elsewhere. The prominent handwoven rug with fringe on the hallway floor is also a Tynietoy product. The 1st floor study in one of the side wings in FIGURE 9 has dark wood paneling on the walls with dark stained trompe l’oeil panel doors and a “tile” floor which looks to be drawn. But the prominent feature is the large floor to ceiling stone fireplace in the center of the room. The Tynietoy furnishings include a drop-front desk, chair with paint decorated seat, and a tilt oblong stand. There is a German floor lamp and tin globe and unidentified sofa and two dark bookcases filled with books on the shelves.

Directly above the study in FIGURE 10 is another room, a child’s playroom/study with a large floor to ceiling hand painted brick fireplace and blue painted walls. The unidentified gray enameled child-size furniture, which looks to have hand painted flower decorations, includes a settee with deep pink silk cushions, a desk with matching chair, a larger chair covered in fabric with back towards the viewer and a side table against the wall. Additional accessories include a German radiator, table lamp, books and a toy structure. A Dolly Dear brass telephone enameled aqua green sits on the side table.

FIGURE 11 shows a small crowded sewing room with light green walls. The Tynietoy furnishings include a highboy, a grain-painted piano bench with basket of sewing items on top, a small chair which belongs with the telephone table in the hall, and a green and black handwoven rug with unusual design at the sides. Also included is an unidentified upholstered wing chair with bulbous wooden cabriole legs, a German-made wood sewing stand and metal sewing machine. This sewing room had been rearranged and some items removed after the photo was taken in 1972. The walk-in closet which opens to the hallway to the left contains German candy container cardboard luggage. All the names of Tynietoy items used in Part 1 and 2 of this article are the official names assigned by Tynietoy as shown in a c. 1931 Tynietoy catalog. The dollhouse is so massive and has so many furnishings, not all the rooms and contents could be included in this twopart article. My thanks go to the Henry Ford Museum for providing me with their expert photographs and the historical background of the dollhouse. Now that this hidden gem of a dollhouse has been discovered, collectors can enjoy it either here in these photographs or, even better yet, seeing in person the one-of-a-kind Tynietoy Tudor-style dollhouse by visiting the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, Michigan.

The Original Pocket Doll, The French Mignonette By François Theimer
T
hese delightful little dolls were first seen in France in the 19th Century. Typically mignonettes are made of pressed bisque and fully articulated, with closed mouth, inserted enamel eyes and a mohair wig. There are several different types of the dolls, the smallest being 7 or 8 cms in height, and the biggest standing at 13 cms. Some mignonettes have articulated elbows with a tiny wooden bowl joints. The first French mignonettes were made by Fernand Sustrac who registered a patent in Paris back in 1878. Sustrac’s mignonettes are the nee plus ultra of pocket dolls. They are masterpieces-in-miniature, standing no more than 13 cm in height, all-bisque and often with bare feet. Other dollmakers also created pocket dolls in France: For example, there’s François Gaultier, and Emile Louis Jumeau, to name just two. After 1900 there were many mignonettes made throughout Europe. Mignonette dolls have a whole precious world: They had the same surroundings and wardrobe as the Parisienne Poupees. There were wonderful apartment rooms scaled for them that contain enchanting, tiny period furniture, accessories and fabulous dresses; for example.

Mignonette pocket dolls became very popular from this time onwards, and they remain desirable to this day. Obviously, mignonettes don’t take up a big space, and they have great charm when displayed. Originally children liked to play with mignonettes because they are small and could be taken wherever the owner went, hence they received the name ”pocket dolls.”

Germany quickly copied the French models, and dolls from makers such as Simon & Halbig sold very well (you can easily recognize them by the doll’s typical black socks!). Germany actually made more pocket dolls than France, which is why today we find more of them. Here, we show you a group of dressed
mignonettes from the end of 19th century in military costumes, and some rare Sustrac dolls from 1878 in original costumes. icnics are an undisputed joy of summer. When long winter nights give way to long summer days, who doesn’t want to head outdoors with a friend, a blanket, and a basket? The phrase “church picnic” stirs Sunday afternoon memories for many Americans, recalling games, music and wooden tables laden with home baked treats. For others, picnics meant family days at the park or in the countryside. Meals just taste better in the fresh air, be it a warm sandy beach, a shady spot beneath a tree, or a big open meadow. Or maybe you gathered with a few friends and dolls in the backyard, pouring tea from a miniature pot. You never know who might show up at a picnic. According to the poets, you might get to see fairies or teddy bears if you keep a close watch. In The Teddy Bear’s Picnic, a classic children’s song written in 1907, we learn about the secret parties that young teddy bears have in the woods. A surprising early anti-littering message comes from E. H. Shepard, the author of Winnie the Pooh, in his 1923 poem, Picnics. He playfully warned children that fairies would only come to visit them if they’ve been careful to pick up their trash and keep the woods clean. Apparently good manners count in the elfin world, and who wouldn’t want to see real fairies? In antique images girls frequently appear wearing heels, stockings, and fashionable dresses at unlikely places such as the seashore or a picnic. Middle-class 19th century children dressed more formally for every occasion than children today, as clothing reflected a family’s social status. But childhood was also emerging as an important developmental stage, so, as time marched on into the early 20th century, little girls’ dress changed to accommodate active play. Imaginary and educational play were especially encouraged, so parents purchased entire miniature worlds for their children; not just tea sets and picnic baskets, but complete kitchens, housekeeping supplies, tool sets, gardening tools, etc. While play was viewed as the work of children, that play was even better if it developed useful adult skills. For girls, this meant keeping house, raising children, and sewing. The better she was at home skills, the more successful a girl would be as a mother. Mothering skills were not seen as limiting during the 19th and early 20th centuries. The skills were venerated because Western nations felt their continued success depended on the moral character of future citizens. Character was built in the home, under the influence of strong parenting. Ladies’ magazines, advertisements, and popular literature promoted “the cult of motherhood” which was seen as the ideal state for adult women.

Because of this focus, popular gifts for girls included boxed sets comprising a doll, plus patterns, instructions and materials to sew a wardrobe. An important example of this toy set was sold in Germany as the Puppenmütterchens Nähschule, or “Dolly Mother’s Sewing School.” It was written by Agnes Lucas and distributed by Franz Karl Weber in the 1890s, though thanks to somewhat loose copyright laws, the set was also sold in France around 1905 as Toilettes de Ma Poupée. The original boxed sets are rare today, but German pattern booklet reprints from the 1980s can still be found for purchase online. I have adapted this Summer Picnic Dress design from a pattern presented in Doll Modes, written in 1972 by Eleanor-Jean Carter, which contains patterns based on these and other antique designs for small dolls. Our model for the costume is a 7” (18cm) reproduction Simon and Halbig 886 by artist Darlene Lane. I’ve been enchanted by her sweet face each time I’ve sewn for her and thought it would be valuable to learn more about the antique original dolls made from this mold. As with many small dolls, which were sold as fairly inexpensive playthings and,

therefore, subject to the whims of the market, their history has twists and turns, including variation in bodies and head molds. These are difficult to trace and identification requires having a large number of dolls standing side by side for comparison. Using the research assistance of Judy Henry and the dolls in her comprehensive collection, we present a timeline that may help collectors understand this ubiquitous little doll’s uniquely important place in the world of mignonettes. 1870s—The earliest all-bisque dolls made by Simon & Halbig had closed mouths and closed dome heads. S&H all-bisque dolls are peg-jointed. These were not the 886 model, but represent a marketing response to the French “pocket dolls” made popular in 1878 by La Poupée Modèle, the premier girls’ magazine. The magazine offered patterns, printed cardstock accessories, and printed fabric sheets to make up costumes for the dolls, which stood about 4 -3/4” x 5-1/2” (12-14cm) tall.

1883-5—Bon Marché catalogs show a S&H all-bisque doll with a 5-strap bootine, which is the same body eventually used on the 886 size 3, with a nicely rounded child-like stomach. Once again, however, this is not the actual 886. This doll has sleep eyes and an open dome head, but the mouth is still closed. 1886—Likely introduction of the 886 head, with an open mouth and teeth. The addition of teeth was a further response to market demand; similar dolls (such as those marked 118) were offered at lower price points by rival companies, often as souvenir dolls. The 886 had superior costuming, but the cost difference made for real competition. Rarely, the 886 has an uncut, open-look mouth. 1887-1889—Changes in 886 production can be seen in teeth, painting styles, and arm positions. It came in several sizes, with the largest being a size 5, about 9” (23cm) tall. The body had slightly splayed legs and well-defined hands. Typically, this doll has a 2-strap shoe, with orange or blue socks or high black stockings. Incidentally, long wool-look stockings were considered “horrible” by French standards of style (per Francois Theimer) The French preferred low, delicately colored cotton socks for little girls. Early 886: • Individually inserted square-cut teeth, set 2 across the top and 1 on the bottom 50

• Low painted socks, 2 strap shoes • Outward facing arms • Rarely, hands are open, delicate, and turned up at the wrist Later 886: • Row of 4 teeth inserted across the top only • Longer painted stockings, usually blue or black • Vertical grooves on stockings; bows on toes of shoes • Heavier, French influenced multi-stroke eyebrows • Arms curved inward Other Variations: • Mold 881-- Closed mouth but very similar to the 887. On a version of the 5-strap bootine body; boots can be peach, light blue, brown, or black. Stockings are white with blue painted bands. Very similar to the S&H 905. • Mold 887—Very uncommon. Nearly identical to the 886 but a later body style. Open mouth with 4 teeth on top only. Over the knee dark socks. 2 dolls found with stickers from Au Nain Bleu shop, which frequently sold richly dressed dolls, displayed in baskets or upholstered boxes. 1890—Introduction of mold 890, which was available alongside the 886 but perhaps less expensive to produce. The 890 has sleep eyes and teeth, but the heads are narrower and smaller in relation to the body and have a single-stroke brow. In 1892, a newly invented “punch”
cut open the mouths and formed 4 teeth in the greenware stage, greatly simplifying production. The body is slender, with close-set legs and a deeper color; hands appear stubby. Socks have a crisscross “woven” look, and the brown or red-brown shoes have one strap with no bow. Brown-skinned and Asian dolls were also introduced about this time, but typically have bare feet. Some pale dolls have bare feet as well. 1891—La Poupée Modèle began advertising S & H dolls with the desirable sleep eyes, open mouths and chubby child-like bodies in lieu of the earlier, slim French mignonettes. 1893-1907 is considered a pocket doll “Golden Age” for the magazine, which published patterns to fit dolls marked size 1 or 2 (about 5” or 13cm). From 1892 onwards, the magazine sold dolls directly from its offices, after editor Fernand Thiéry bought up remaining stock due to the closure of Mme. Régnault’s shop Á la Poupée de Nuremberg. Dolls with 5-strap bootines were also advertised in American catalogs such as Marshall Field during the 1890s and early 1900s. 1892—LPM announced that the “mulatto dolls have arrived.” A 1905 magazine illustration of the brownskinned doll shows an 886 with bare feet. 1907—The S&H dolls sold by LPM suddenly grew to size 2 or 3 (about 6“ or 15cm) and remained this height until the end of publication, perhaps in competitive Antique DOLL Collector

response to the very popular 27cm (10-5/8”) Bleuette doll offered by La Semaine de Suzette, the new conservative French girls’ magazine introduced in 1905. Despite publishing patterns for several sizes of dolls it also offered for sale, LPM struggled to compete with LSdS. 1916—The last advertisement for Mignonette in LPM. Production of the 886 and 890 dolls likely ceased due to World War I, so the magazine was selling from the last of its stock. 1917—Marking the end of an era, LPM published this notice: “The small all-bisque dolls are all sold out, there will never be any more of them.” Bisque heads continued to appear after 1910 on composition bodies made by K*R, which finally acquired S&H in 1920, but the Golden Age had come to an end.

Notes:
1. This pattern has been made to fit a 7” (17.8cm) reproduction Simon & Halbig 886 by Darlene Lane. Be sure to check the fit on your own doll over pantalets and slip before cutting into special fabrics; every doll is different! 2. All seams 1/8” (.3cm) unless indicated otherwise. 3. The sample underbodice is made from a vintage cotton organdy napkin, with cross bars woven in like a dimity. Lace or netting would also work for this layer. You can make the bodice lining from the same fabric as the slip, or use a 2nd layer of your bodice fabric to enhance the delicate appearance. 4. For a different look, make the dress with short sleeves. It can also be made from silk for a dressy style, or from fine wool for a winter costume. 5. Use your own pattern to make a pair of pantalets for your doll before beginning.
Petticoat Slip
1. From batiste, cut 2 bodice pieces on the fold and 1 skirt, 12” x 3-1/2” (30.5cm x 9cm). Cut twill tape in half to make 2 straps. 2. Hem the skirt by making two turns along one long edge: 1/8” and 1/2” (.3cm and 1.3cm). Hem in place, then press. Mark and sew two 1/8” tucks 3/8” and 5/8” (.3cm, 1cm, 1.6cm) above the hem. Press. Sew 1/4” (.6cm) lace on the hem line. 3. Narrow hem the short edges (center back seam) 1-3/8” (3.5cm) down from the unhemmed edge, to create the back opening. Press. Sew two rows of small gathering stitches along this edge, between the narrow hems, leaving long tails, then set skirt aside. 4. Fold up the lower edge of one bodice piece 1/8” (.3cm) to the wrong side and press. This will be the bodice lining. With right sides together, sew bodice all around the outside edges. Leave lower edge open. Clip all corners and curves, then carefully turn right side out and press. 5. Sew lace around the top of the bodice, with decorative edge facing down. Begin and end by folding 1/4” (.6cm) under, and miter lace as you go around the corners. Slightly pull a thread in the heading of the lace to help ease around the underarms, if needed. Press flat when complete. 6. Pull up skirt gathering threads to fit the bodice, even the gathers, then sew to the front of the bodice (unfolded edge) with right sides together. Press bodice up away from the skirt so that the gathered edge tucks inside the two layers, then hem the folded edge over the gathers on the inside. 7. Sew up the back seam of the skirt, trim, overcast, and press. 8. Try slip on the doll and mark placement for straps. I cut the straps to 1-3/4” (4.5cm) length for my doll, but each doll is different. Dab ends of straps with craft glue to prevent fraying. When dry, tack in place on the bodice. 9. Close the slip with a tiny button and loop at the top of the bodice. Antique DOLL Collector

Cross-Front Dress 1. Be sure you have cut a left and right bodice overlay. Turn diagonal edges under twice, each 1/8” (.3cm). Hem. 2. Layer the wrong side of the overlay pieces onto the right side of the underbodice (outside sheer layer, not lining). Baste together at the shoulders. This is now the “bodice front.” The lower edges are still hanging loose. 3. Sew bodice front to bodice backs at shoulder seams, with right sides together, then press. 4. SAY “MA-MA” The All-American Doll
That Talked By Jane Foster
M
ama dolls were made in America during the early part of the twentieth century. They got their name because a voice box inserted into their cloth bodies gave the dolls the ability to say “mama” in two syllables when the doll was tilted. Other identifying features of a Mama doll are a composite head, molded painted hair, a chunky cloth body and swinging legs. Today, if Mama dolls are to be found at all, many of the dolls’ voice boxes are of course not in working order due to their age. There is also a substantial group of “reborn” Mama dolls available today. The history of the American-made Mama doll takes us back to Paul and Georgene Averill, owners of Averill Manufacturing Company, in New York City. In 1918 Georgene Averill had designed “Life-Like” dolls that had composition heads and limbs with soft stuffed cloth bodies and stitched hip joints that let the doll’s legs swing back and forth freely. On a hang tag the name of these dolls has been spelled “LYF-LYK” (Trade Mark Reg. U.S. Pat. Off.) The trade name for the Averill line was Madame Hendren dolls; Georgene Averill was also known as Madame Georgene and sometimes Madame Hendren. The Averills sought to improve this doll so that it resembled a real child. Madame Georgene changed the doll’s cloth body and the modeling of the face. Another improvement that allowed the doll to sit down without falling over. They named their new dolls “Wonder Dolls,” and introduced them in 1920.

Even with design changes and innovative promotions, sales of the Mama dolls were slow at first. Eventually, with the patents secured for the voice boxes (an American invention as well), Mama dolls began to be popular. They were offered for sale in a wide selection of size, quality and price. Different doll companies such as Effanbee, Horsman and Ideal sold their own Mama dolls as well. These dolls could also be acquired through mail-order catalogs. Some samples have painted eyes and molded hair, while some have sleep eyes and good quality wigs. Mama dolls often wore simple cotton dresses, and the more expensive types were available in organdy, batiste, voile, lawn, and even silk garments trimmed with silk ribbons and lace. Many Mama dolls’ outfits were accessorized with a bow, either a pretty bonnet-type hat or large hair bow. The hair bow was usually a large silk or taffeta ribbon made into a very large hair bow. For little girls of the day these large hair bows were fashionable, but sometimes they seemed out of proportion to the size of the dolls’ heads so some of the larger dolls’ hair was styled in long curls to reduce this effect. The doll in yellow dress and bonnet and cute sausage blonde curls featured in this article is a Halco doll. Halco offered dolls for sale from 1923 to 1951. For identification, Halco dolls have a silver and blue embossed tag that is attached with a small safety pin to the front of their dresses. The tag reads QUALITY HALCO DOLL MADE IN U.S.A. These dolls had open mouths with a few teeth showing identifying embossed name tag still pinned to her dress. and dark eye shadow over their sleep eyes. During the 1930’s and the early 1940’s Halco produced mainly Mama dolls. Their dolls had composition shoulder-plate heads, arms and partial legs. The bodies and upper legs were cloth. Effanbee gave us many very nice Mama dolls including “Lovums” who was first made in the 1920s. In 1934 “Patsy Mae,” a thirty-inch Mama doll, was added to the popular Effanbee Patsy sister family. Patsy Mae’s head is marked EFFANBEE// PATSY-MAE on a shoulderplate marked EFFANBEE// LOVUMS//(c)PAT NO. 128558. The Patsy Mae appearing here is all-original and dressed in a blue dotted-swiss dress. Joining the many Effanbee Mama doll examples is “Marilee.” She is marked Effanbee//Marilee//Copr// Doll and is thirty inches tall, and was made in the mid1920s. Marilee was produced with dark brown and blonde human hair wigs blue sleep eyes, and open mouth with four upper teeth. A very nice example of a Mama doll from the 1940’s would be the Effanbee “Sweetie-Pie” doll with her dark caracul wig and flirty blue eyes. She is twenty-four inches tall, all original, with composition arms and legs and cloth body. Her marking is “Effanbee” on the back of her neck. The Effanbee thirty-inch “Mae Starr” phonograph doll was made in the 1920s. Sometimes these phonograph dolls were referred to as “Singing and Talking” dolls. They were made in the 1920s and 1930s alongside the Mama dolls. The doll pictured here is in working order and has a lot more to 58

say than the other dolls. A phonograph mechanism was installed in her cloth body, with crank on the side, and the undergarment has appropriate openings for it and a slit for access to the record mechanism. The doll would have to be wound up and then the discs would play. This doll comes with six cylinders that play nursery rhymes and one prayer. The cylinders include “London Bridge is Falling Down,” “Old Mother Hubbard,” “One-Two Buckle My Shoe,” “Rock-a-bye Baby,” “Little Boy Blue,” and “Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep.” Averill also made a phonograph doll with cylinders. The Averill phonograph doll was named “Dolly Record” and had an ink stamp on her body that read “Genuine Madame Hendren Doll.” The Mama doll type body was always used for the phonograph dolls in this era.

Mama dolls were very appealing to their little mamas decades ago, and to collectors today. It has been suggested that the large thirty-inch Mama dolls of the 1920s and ‘30s were made as companion dolls for little girls. Perhaps children enjoyed these dolls because cradling a Mama doll is somewhat similar to holding a baby because of their soft cloth body type and swinging legs. Because of this construction these dolls seem to be huggable and cuddly when held. Also engaging to a small child would be how these bigger Mama dolls could be moved from side to side as they “walked” with their little owner due to their composition lower legs that swung from their cloth torso at the hips. According to the Collector’s Encyclopedia of American Composition Dolls by Ursula R. Mertz, “The Mama dolls endured and were still sold in the 1940s. Except for the shape of the legs, our present-day cloth-bodied babies still feature the very same construction as those famous Mama dolls.”
