THE PRESIDENT’S PERSPECTIVE

VOLUME 7 November, 2016

ADMINISTRATIVE STAFF ANNA BISHOP Executive Director CAROL ALDRIDGE Member Services Coordinator

As October wound to a close, I would normally be entranced by mild sunny days sporting the first glimmer of gold and hint of russet through the woods rimming our North Texas farm. This year I can’t help but ask, “How is it that I am wearing shorts and plugging in fans in early November?” But then I remind myself that abnormally hot fall days are nothing to endure compared to some of the challenges many have recently faced with hurricanes, fires, floods and more. And owning horses, these disasters present their own unique set of challenges. However, such is the case with the entire equine industry today. We face an unprecedented amount of challenges to our chosen way of life, ranging from rising feed costs to youth that are tech oriented and lack the exposure to horses of previous generations. It becomes more difficult for our members to participate with their horses at the same level they once enjoyed. Hard choices about where to put dollars are a fact of life and totally understandable. The Pyramid Society is not immune to the same type of external challenges. We also have hard choices to make about

how our dollars are spent. The Board of Directors recently spent 4 days together looking at all income opportunities as well as all expenses. As owners, we must make choices in order to continue enjoying the most inspirational horses in the world, and our Society must also be responsible in making choices in order to enable us to continue the “… preservation, perpetuation, and promotion of the Straight Egyptian horse as the premier source of classic Arabian type in the world.” Each and every one of us who own a Straight Egyptian Arabian horse benefit from The Pyramid Society! At the most basic level, the inherent value in owning a Straight Egyptian Arabian is directly due to the foresight of our Founders who defined this “breed within a breed” in 1969. Forty-seven years of promotion has made the Straight Egyptian Arabian known worldwide, with a stature that belies the actual percentage of the Arabian breed it represents. Education is key to the preservation and perpetuation of this noble horse and is an area where The Pyramid Society has unequivocally remained “… the leader of a worldwide community of breeders, owners, and devotees united in the pursuit of excellence.”

“At the most basic level, the inherent value in owning a Straight Egyptian Arabian is directly due to the foresight of our Founders who defined this “breed within a breed” in 1969.”

As always, there is more work to be done. As the new President of The Pyramid Society, I promise to approach this job with the same passion and dedication that I have poured into 36 years as a breeder and caretaker of the very special gift that is the Egyptian Arabian horse. And like our previous leaders, to which we owe our immense gratitude, our current Board of Directors remain equally passionate and dedicated, pledging to follow the Mission Statement in every decision we make. After 47 years the core vision remains remarkably relevant.

As we approach the new membership deadline, I ask each of you to look close to home for that same passion, dedication and support. Each membership helps fund projects like the exciting 2017 International Breeders’ Conference in Italy, more Regional Workshops in 2017 (co-sponsored with The Pyramid Foundation, Inc.), The Egyptian Event, The Standard of Excellence, The Pyramid Society Studbook, the Straight Egyptian Certificate, seminars and promotion at shows like Scottsdale and much more! Your participation in our innovative Pyramid Society Yearbook (published in the Arabian Horse World) and other TPS publications also is important. And finally, your participation in the workshops, the Breeders Conferences, The Egyptian Event and the new activities we are planning also provide us with the basis to continue to serve as a beacon for the Egyptian Arabian horse. Your support means more to us now than ever before! In challenging times, this is what a community does - provide support. The Egyptian Arabian horse is the common thread that unites us. A shared appreciation of beauty, grace, intelligence and noble spirit, along with the task of preserving, perpetuating and promoting such a priceless historical creature, bring breeders and devotees together from all walks of life and all corners of the globe. And in today’s volatile world, that too, is priceless.

Rebecca Rogers President, The Pyramid Society

The hard work paid off. In June, Leslie fulfilled her dream of riding again. She returned to Southlake, climbed on Prince Harry OGM (Pimlico RCA x AK Meshura) and went for a short ride. PROS AND CONS OF FEEDING BEET PULP TO HORSES

Beet pulp comes in two forms, shredded (as seen above) and pelleted. Photo: Erica Larson, The Horse News Editor

EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES

Beet pulp has long been a mainstay in many feed rooms, especially during the winter months. People often incorrectly think of it as a concentrate because in many cases it is fed instead of or alongside grain; however, in reality, it is actually a forage. Relatively high in hemicellulose, a fermentable fiber, beet pulp digestion relies on microbial fermentation in the hindgut. This makes it a feed closer to pasture and hay than traditional concentrates such as oats, which are high in starch and require enzymatic digestion in the small intestine. Yet, when

it comes to the calories supplied per pound, it compares more closely to oats than hay. This is what makes it such a good choice for hard-keeping horses.
