Bianca Medina editor-in-chief Editor’s Letter Hello My Child Mamma’s and Papa’s So here we are April! Before we know it, it will be December! What the!!! Please don’t judge, but it’s come to my attention that my child plays on her device’s way too much! When I was growing up, TV was a luxury and gaming was just starting out! What I remember about my childhood was that playing with toys and music was everything! My first memory of being on a device was apple computer. Goodness - I’m old, and it was a box! I remember being so excited to play the EA sports Game – Summer Olympics, I think it would have been the early 90’s. However, just loading the game, and. then playing, your fingers would go numb after 15 mins so we never spent to much time in front of screens! I know that why we were living through lockdowns and had minimal contact with our loved ones, friends, and extended family, devices were a great way to stay connected, but those days are now long gone! I have started limiting her screen time and it’s been a s%$t show, but I know I will be helping her to get back to being the social, creative, and chatty child I had PTTP (Prior To The Pandemic)! Over the past week, I have banned gaming during the school week as well as limiting the apps she can access. I have been encouraging her to be more creative with arts and crafts, writing stories and playing with toys! I will be allowing my child to use more educational apps to help with her reading, spelling, and math, and by doing this, I also know she will slowly move away from using devices, if it’s like represent more schoolwork! I love tech like most and believe it has a good purpose, but I need to keep her usage in check and let her just be a kid. Kids need to use their imagination, be creative, inventive, and resourceful. Having the heads buried in devices, will deny them of what we all got to experience as children and no child should have to miss out on that! Bianca & My Child Team xoxox

BENEFITS OF TECHNOLOGY ON CHILD DEVELOPMENT W r i t t e n

J o h n

Technology is everywhere, and in today’s world, children are exposed to it at a very early age. From education and learning to a major chunk of their recreation, almost everything is facilitated by technology. The amount of time we spend tapping and swiping on screens has been increasing; the Covid-19 pandemic has only resulted in a surge of this usage. Parents all over feel that technology affect’s their children negatively and cumbers their development and health. While these concerns are valid, they aren’t entirely true. Technology has a ton of benefits to offer. Having a scoop of ice cream sounds like a good idea, at the same time having an entire tub, not so good. So,

the key lies with balance and amount you consume. The same goes for technology, find the right balance, and try to harness its benefits. Here are some of the benefits of technology on child development: Encourages Creativity Children are creative, they think outside the box and have huge imaginations. Previously, they only had crayons and pencils at their disposal to visualize those ideas and convey them to the rest. However, now with technology they have much more than just crayons and colouring pens, from computers, tablets, and so on to help them turn their thoughts to reality. Your child is now able to create digital art, or even 3D animations, which can be brought into being using 3D printers. Technology provides the resources necessary to harness the most out of your child’s creativity. Who knows, your

child may on their way to create a prototype to some world changing innovation, all thanks to the freedom offered by technology. Independence and Empowerment From conceiving the idea to turning it into a reality, earlier we had to face a lot of obstacles. The lack of resources, skill and knowledge being the substantial problems. But now with technology, you have everything at your fingertips. Your child comes up with an idea, now they research about it, and finally realize it into a conveyable form. Technology allows your kid to create and go through each of these steps on their own. With the internet, kids have access to a large amount of information online and are enabled to answer their questions on their own. This encourages them to have independent thought trains, which helps build independence, confidence, and new interests.

Develops Problem-Solving Skills When children play video games, they are more concerned about the short term’s goals, which helps improve their problem-solving skills. In such games, they are always trying to figure out their next steps and react quickly to new scenarios thrown their way. This improves their logical reasoning and problem-solving. Games such as PUBG and Fortnite are survival mode games, where the task is to stay alive as long as possible and outlive the opponents. Here they are put into new environments where they are to collect resources, and even build structures to survive. Such games help improve their decision-making and reasoning skills. Socialising Yes, children who spend long hours playing games, binging shows, or swiping away on their smartphones may face difficulty in socialising. But remember the thing about ice cream and dosage, studies suggest that children who spend a limited amount of time using tech may be able to use it as a socialising tool. 10

APRIL 2022 | My Child Magazine Issue #127

Video games, social media and even movies are all interests and hobbies that your child may share with others. Some video games even have in-game voice chat, which could help them find friends and peers with similar interests. Increased Visual Attention Many applications require your child to pay close attention to details provided on the screen to complete the task they are assigned. This is more prevalent in the case of RPG or Role-playing games, where your child assumes a character in the game, and moves around as that character. Your child must constantly think of their next move, which requires them to pay attention to any details on the screen. Apart from increased visual attention, technology may also help in improving your child’s hand-eye coordination. When your child follows an object floating around on the screen, and tries to match it with the cursor, as in shooting games or sports games.

As parents, we always try to do our best to secure our children’s’ well-being and success. Today, the whole world revolves around technology, so that means you must teach your children to use tech in a healthy way and help them be responsible and successful digital citizens. While it is true that electronic gadgets do keep your children busy and give you the time to do your work in peace, too much screen time can be detrimental to their health. Setting limits to your kid’s screen time in today’s screen-filled world can seem impossible. During the Covid-19 pandemic, smartphones and virtual screens acted as a lifeline to connect us to our loved ones and as a means of keeping ourselves occupied. From schooling to work, everything went online and our dependence on virtual screen surged. According to Bosco, an online and social activity monitoring app, the pandemic has led to nearly a two-fold increase in children’s screen time. From babies who are nifty at swiping and tapping on screens to keeping your young children safe from cyberbullying and exploitation, here’s what you need to know when it comes to limiting your children’s screen time. Babies (Under 2 Years) Your child’s brain grows the fastest during the first three years of their lives. Interacting with the real world with all their senses would be more beneficial to their lingual, emotional, social, and motor development, than using a virtual screen. Your child could be playing with a cat on the screen, but that wouldn’t come close to interacting with a cat in real life.

14

APRIL 2022 | My Child Magazine Issue #127

Introducing your baby to technology isn’t necessarily a bad idea, but it should only be for a minute percentage of their time, and ideally you should supervise this screen time. Here’s what you need to keep in mind: Keep Screen Time to Bare Minimum Experts suggest limiting screen usage exclusively for video calling their loved ones. This one-on-one interaction would help them develop their lingual skills even though the interaction is virtual. Stay Away from Educational Videos You might think it is a good idea to get your baby to watch educational videos. However, such videos that are usually marketed as aiding brain development have been found to do more harm than good. Studies have linked such videos to sleep problems, developmental issues, and speech delays. Keep Your Devices Safe You don’t want your baby to accidentally delete some critical data from your device or do something worse. So, keep your devices locked and turn on parental controls so that your baby doesn’t make in-app purchases or destroy your tech.

Toddler and Pre-schoolers (2-5 Years) At this age, it might be difficult to keep your child away from electronic devices. Try to squeeze out more tech-free time; play, watch and browse together with your child. A vast majority of parents find that there are benefits to their children’s screen usage. While this is true, it would be a better choice to keep tech usage to a small fraction of their learning and recreational activities. Use Tech to Bond Children, at this age, learn to share, help, and do things that are beneficial to others. Technology can help your child achieve these. Play video games with them and show them how a responsible adult plays and uses tech in a healthy way. Similarly, watching movies or cartoons together can help you bond with your children better. Set Tech-Free Time and Spaces Lay ground rules for tech-free time and spaces, such as no electronic gadgets two hours before bed, or at the dinner table or in the bedroom. Keep TVs and PCs in spaces where you can supervise, even if you are busy with chores. Encourage Other Activities. Persuade your child to get involved in activities that don’t need an electronic screen in front of them, such as board games, sports or reading books.

16

APRIL 2022 | My Child Magazine Issue #127

Young Children (6-12 Years) Young children are likely to use technology on a regular basis. Your children would still be looking up to you for guidance and support, so this would be the right time to reinforce good healthy habits for the appropriate use of tech.

“Your child may not

directly talk to you about bullying they face, so be on the lookout for any signs of mental distress and create a safe space where they can open up without having to worry. ”

Bullying is a serious issue, especially among young children. Your child may not directly talk to you about bullying they face, so be on the lookout for any signs of mental distress and create a safe space where they can open up without having to worry. Teach your child to stand up, not only for themselves, but also if they see someone being bullied. Privacy and Security. Talk to your child about internet safety early on. Educate them about the dangers of the internet and remind them that what goes online stays there. Ask them to never share their confidential or personally identifiable information online. Consider asking your child for their passwords to their online and social media accounts to keep them safe, until they are mature enough to handle issues on their own. NEGATIVE IMPACTS OF TECHNOLOGY ON CHILDREN W r i t t e n

J o h n

From mobile phones and web-based entertainment to TV and tabletbased toys, the present children are continually immersed in technology. While youngsters and teenagers really must foster a fitness for technology, all things considered, a lot of technology use can impede their well-being. The adverse consequences run the range from obesity and lifestyle issues to social and behavioural problems. This doesn’t necessarily mean that you must get rid of tech altogether. Rather, you should know about the impacts that technology can have on children and foster methodologies to reduce their screen time.

Childhood Obesity and Technology Kids now tend to spend less time outside doing physical activities, as they are usually stuck to their mobile phone or TV screens. Combine that with an increased affinity for junk food, what we have is a surge in obesity rates among kids. Kids will naturally tend to be more interested in watching movies or shows, playing video games, or casually scrolling through social media. As parents, we really must ensure kids are investing energy outside and stay physically active. If you have time to spare, join your children in outdoor games. You can mess around, playing tag, or get a pair of gloves and a ball to play catch, or toss a Frisbee around. This would also act as bonding time for you and your kids, and at the same time help keep obesity at bay.

Negative Effects of Technology on Children’s Social Development Technology has changed the way we connect with our loved ones. Even as grown-ups, we are more inclined to send a text rather than make a phone call. Likewise, we frequently act differently online platforms than how we would act face to face. Such differences are not restricted to grown-ups. Children that spend a large chunk of their time on social media, have been found to suffer from low self-esteem. On social media platforms, we see highly curated content, this can cause distress especially in young children and teens as they often compare themselves to their peers. Thus, technology use can create social and behavioural issues in youngsters since it reduces the time kids spend interacting in real time. Make it a point to screen your kid’s internet use and know about the kind of sites they are visiting and the games they are playing on the web. Set up parental controls on

PCs, mobile phones, and tablets to prevent any unwanted usage and protect them from potential trouble. Try to place the PC, gaming console, or television in a room where you can supervise your kid’s technology use. Technology and Attention Span Kids today are wired for instant gratification. They have everything at their fingertips. Gone are the days when we used to wait a week for our weekly visit to the cinemas with our family or used to wait hours at a stretch listening to the radio just to listen to that one track. Mobile phones, tablets, and other gizmos, keep distracting us with notifications and sounds, making it difficult for us to focus on the task at hand. A study conducted has shown that ever since the use of technology has surged, the average attention span dropped from 12 to 8 seconds. To combat this, what you can do is restrict tech use when your child has a task at hand. Say your child is doing schoolwork, strictly prohibit smartphone usage. 22

APRIL 2022 | My Child Magazine Issue #127

Encourage conversation and engagement at the dinner table. Urge your children to unplug, and take part in activities that don’t include screens, such as outdoor games, reading books, or solving riddles. Final Thoughts If you think your child is already addicted to technology and electronic devices, it might still not be too late to make some positive changes. Try to make time to spend with your kid and have some quality time one-on-one. Try to limit the amount of time your child spends on social media by setting up parental controls, tech-free zones, and time. Plan family nights where all of you put your electronic gadgets away and just spend time together, maybe signing karaoke or playing board games. Most importantly, be a good role model. How many times have you checked your phone when you were supposed to be spending time with your kids? Try to limit your phone usage around them and show them how to use technology in a healthy manner. APRIL 2022 | My Child Magazine Issue #127

TECHNOLOGY USE CAN CAUSE SOCIAL AND BEHAVIOURAL PROBLEMS IN CHILDREN W r i t t e n

B y :

L i z a

J o h n

Human beings are the farthest from nature than ever have been till date. Worse, the distance is increasing. Worst, they seldom realise or acknowledge the harm. But was this stretching course taken voluntarily? Well, yes and no. Hi-tech is an asset in innumerable ways, yet we can’t overshadow the dark side of it. From 2020, the world has been going through constant changes. You can no longer see children hurrying to the school building not to get themselves late. Now they are probably circumscribed within the four walls of their house, eyes pointed to the big, luminous screen, doing their online classes, or surfing the internet. The child’s age and cognitive ability, determines the impact of technology on them. For example: a two-year-old child won’t benefit from using a smartphone, but given the conditions, someone older could get digitally learned by technology. How Do Kids Become Antisocial in Real Life? Amidst all the benefits of social media platforms, the ill-effect can make children antisocial. People generally show the best part of their life in those sites, so, when the viewers compare those highlight reels with their behind-the-scenes, they might begin to feel insecure. Those curated content they watch can result in lower self-esteem among some. It’s a step ahead to the creation of superiority and inferiority complexes.

It’s reliable and easier to communicate virtually than to reach out in real life. As the information you show in the media is under your control but in real life, you show the ‘real you’. Most kids heavily engaged in media are out of that practice. But it’s necessary to have real bonding at times. Studies have shown that some social platforms can be one of the many causes of social anxiety. How Does Unmindful Utilisation of Technology Affect Us on The Behavioural Spectrum? Humans have an average attention span of a goldfish’. This headline is podcasting everywhere. Studies of the early 2000s showed that the average attention span of human beings has decreased from 12 seconds to eight seconds. This causes impatience and frustration, leading to absent-mindedness. Too much screen time during the day kills a lot of time, reducing their lifespan. Continuously engaging the brain into processing information is unhealthy. So, it’s recommended to go for nature walks. The obesity rates are increasing significantly in children and adolescents. If they are sitting around, tapping the screen for hours, then their physical movement naturally gets restricted to a certain amount. Thus, they should be encouraged to head outside and communicate with their peers face-to-face, play with them, go for runs, do anything that keeps them away from the screen. The exposure to blue light from the LCD screen before sleep can affect their natural cardiac system, causing inability to sleep. There are apps to reduce the blue rays, such as twilight, but it’s better to keep the screen light away for an hour right before you go to bed. Cyberbullying is hitting the peak at this moment. Bullying in any form can lead to mental distress, anxiety, and depression. It can even lead to suicidal thoughts. So, it’s very much important that they have a safe place to vent out all the pent-up stuff.

26

APRIL 2022 | My Child Magazine Issue #127

Why Is Complete Abstinence Not Fruitful? The previous generation of kids lived in a world without smartphones, laptops, or any hi-tech gadgets inside their home during childhood. But most generation Z kids had it all since birth, so these gadgets seem to be a necessity to them. Therefore, forceful abstinence can make them desperate. It will restrict them from exploring the innovative, fruitful, and productive side of it. Thus, parents need to be empathetic and should encourage understanding conversations with their kids about setting time limits and app restrictions, until they are capable of making their own decisions. Why Is Moderation Important? Children are born innocent. Mostly, they won’t understand the difference between productive and useless surfing. Moreover, the algorithms of social media platforms are designed in such a way that the audiences are bound to get intrigued by it. Naturally, children become the most innocent and accessible prey. When addicted, their brain coordination changes and pleasure hormones, that is dopamine, get secreted during the wrong time. The more they are into it, the worse the addiction gets. It takes genuine efforts to get normal again. So, What’s The Solution? Should Parents Stop Their Kids from Using Technology? Well, that mentality would cause more trouble than the actual problem. Technology is booming, virtuality is everywhere, so kids do need to learn the basics. But too much of anything is unhealthy, be it the fat you consume, or the exercise you do. Thus, we must stick to moderation. Technology is forever to stay and continue to evolve, expand, and reshape the world. So, using that in moderation to capitalise the benefits and lessen the negatives shouldn’t be an issue. It’s high time, we should be mindful of our actions and the results that follow along. Only then, overall growth is possible. APRIL 2022 | My Child Magazine Issue #127

PARENTING CHILDREN IN THE AGE OF SCREENS W r i t t e n

B y :

L i z a

J o h n

Parenting has, is, and will never be an easy task. Parents do often find themselves at their wits ends, trying to discipline their naughty toddlers or trying to deal with teens who want their “freedom and privacy” regardless of the age they live in. But today, parents have a new challenge to deal with, screens. Visualize a child in the 90s, you’d probably be thinking about a child with a toy in one hand. Similarly, if you were to think of a child in today’s world, you’d probably have a picture of a child casually swiping away at a smartphone screen. Let’s face it, we are living in the age of screens. A vast majority of parents say that parenting today is more difficult than it was 20 years ago. It is true, parents today struggle to set limits on the use of technology and screen time. A major reason is the lack of role models. We don’t have any sort of reference or any tried and tested strategies from grandpa to help us. This challenge is new, and we must come up with the solutions. As parents, want to do the best we can for our kids, and so we want to be able to guide them in both the real and virtual world. Teach them how to use technology 34

APRIL 2022 | My Child Magazine Issue #127

responsibly in a healthy manner. Here are some basic guidelines to help you set up some boundaries at home and thus be a better parent in the age of screens. Balance Is Key Technology is here to stay, with the Covid-19 pandemic, the education sector has welcomed technology through online learning platforms. There are benefits to technology, it helps your kids learn, have fun, connect and be creative. Conversely, children could access inappropriate content, be exploited, suffer from online bullying

and spending too much time in the virtual world could even affect their development. So, what we need is to find the right balance. You can’t compare your family to another, each family has its own different dynamics, and each has its own unique idea of balance. You understand yours the best, so try to exploit the benefits of tech and at the same time minimize its harm. Do not overlook the signs of unhealthy tech usage. If you face harsh resistance or tantrums when you try to limit your child’s tech usage, it may be a sign of unhealthy usage of technology. APRIL 2022 | My Child Magazine Issue #127

35

Similarly, unhealthy usage of electronic devices may affect your child’s academics, sleep, or social skills. Be A Good Role Model Children always look up to their parents; they try to imitate you in anything you do. Your child is observing you even when you think they aren’t. So, it’s natural that they try to copy your technology habits as well. So, the next time you pick up to check your phones, or think of binge-watching your favourite show, or work late on your laptops, remember that you are also having an impact on your child’s tech habits. 36

APRIL 2022 | My Child Magazine Issue #127

You can start by setting up work-life boundaries. Disconnect from the rest during family dinners or vacations. Similarly, don’t fiddle on your electronic gadgets as soon as you enter home from work, or when your kids come home after school or when they are leaving for school. Use tech responsibly. Never call or text while you are driving, or don’t immerse yourself in a screen when you are out on a walk. Let that work call wait until you finish whatever it is that you are doing with your family unless it is an emergency.

Keep Your Phones Away from Babies Under 2 Do not use technology to distract your baby while you attend to some work. Keep your tech away from your baby as much as possible, at least until they are two. A major chunk of your baby’s emotional, social, linguistic, and behavioural development occurs within the first three years of their life. During this period, it is necessary that you let them have real life interactions as much as possible rather than tapping or swiping at a virtual screen. You can introduce them to tech once they grow a bit. Once your child is at least two, you can maybe allow a maximum of an hour of screen time. Keep Your Devices Safe Your child might accidentally delete important data from your devices or post personally identifiable or inappropriate stuff on your socials. So, it is necessary that you set up passwords for all your devices and have parental controls on if your child is using it.

Discovering that you are pregnant may have brought on a wide range of emotions for you and your close ones. You might also have met with questions about your plans for your career now that you are pregnant. Expecting a baby does not mean that you have to put your career on hold. In fact, most people have kids right when their careers are taking off and manage their work and pregnancy effectively. The choice is always yours to make, and you will find support on the way. If you

ever needed a guide on navigating work while you are expecting, now more than ever, this article is for you. Moving Ahead with Your Career First things first, your employer cannot give you shorter hours, cut your benefits, keep you from being promoted, or discriminate against you in any manner because you are expecting. Any such actions give you the right to make legal moves against them. When you come across the news that you are pregnant, confirm with your healthcare provider to see if it is safe for you to keep working. Once they give you the green signal, give a heads-up to the HR personnel. On the contrary, if your healthcare provider has expressed concern about you going to work, your employer must carry out a risk assessment and check for anything that might affect you adversely. Following this, you can either return to your job or your employer must make arrangements for another safer job with the same pay and benefits for you. Even if you are restricted from work, your employer must put you on paid leave.

Especially if you are working with X-rays, heavy machinery, animals, or in polluted surroundings, you need to ensure that both your health and the babies are protected at all costs. Coping With Pregnancy Symptoms at Work No matter how easy your pregnancy can be, it will surely accompany some fatigue and nausea. When you are at work, the pregnancy symptoms can be a little tough on you. Here are some ways to manage your pregnancy symptoms without disrupting your workday. The best way to keep nausea at bay while you are working is to stay away from whatever triggers the response in you. For instance, if the smell of food being reheated in the break room is getting to you, look for a place where the smell cannot reach, to work. Even if you try your very best, some amount of morning sickness is going to affect you while you work, during such times, make sure that you have bland snacks like crackers to settle your stomach. Soothing teas, especially ginger tea, can help you to manage bouts of nausea.

Growing another human within you is bound to take a lot of your energy. As a result, expecting parents feel fatigued all the time. To avoid feeling overly tired, make sure that your diet contains enough iron and protein. Fortified grains, green leafy vegetables, and poultry can replenish your depleting energy reserves. Since you are pregnant, you don’t have to give up doing things that you love but make sure that you are not overexerting yourself. Take frequent breaks from whatever you are doing to stretch and keep your circulation going. Otherwise, you will see swollen joints and carpal tunnel syndrome develop. Drink lots of fluids and get enough rest. Your employer must make provisions for this. Planning For Birth Start accepting help from your co-workers. Delegate a few tasks before you start your parental leave, and this way someone can help resolve any accidental absent-mindedness from your side.

42

APRIL 2022 | My Child Magazine Issue #127

This is the best way to start planning for your leave of absence. Be sure to notify your employer about your parental leave at least 10 weeks prior and confirm this with them around 4 weeks before you take your time off. Ensure that all your tasks are smoothly handed over to your colleagues well before you take your leave. Leaving the delegation for the last minute can give you added stress and make the transition process difficult. Discuss the benefits and other financial questions with your employer before you leave work to prepare for birth. Also, make it a point to plan your return to avoid confusion. Final Thoughts Work and children are all equally important in one’s life. You need not let go of one in order to achieve the other. While planning to work while you are expecting, make sure to communicate with your employer, medical professional, and family. Most importantly, take it slow and take care of you and your little one’s health.

EPIDURALS AND BIRTH INJURIES W r i t t e n

B y :

L i z a

J o h n

Settling in terms of job, satisfaction, life, and the joyous journey of building up a family is a dream we all have in our long-term plans. One of the major and irreplaceable parts of building up

a family full of love is adding an innocence of a child. But the painful labour’s during childbirth are veiled under that lively smile of the kid. Is there any way that labour can be less scary?

How Are Epidurals Helpful?

Epidurals have been used for a long time to nullify the pains during childbirth. This procedure involves the administration of

an anaesthetic in the lower back (near the spinal nerves) of the female, which further causes blockage of pain during labour. This has been effectively used to make deliveries easier for the mothers and has been widely used because of its results.

Under this procedure, with the help of a long and thin needle, a catheter is placed in the back of the patient or other. The needle is removed, and the catheter is further taped to avoid its dislocation. The anaesthesia or medication for pain is then provided under the guidance of the doctor.

Epidurals result in a drop in blood pressure (hypotension) and if the levels of lowered blood pressure are not monitored, it may affect both the mother and child. Hypotension results in decreased oxygen supplies to the baby. It also alters the heart rate of the baby. In extreme cases, it may result in brain damage to the baby, or worst, stillbirths.

46

APRIL 2022 | My Child Magazine Issue #127

Epidurals have been very popular when it comes to the choices of mothers for easy deliveries. If you are consuming certain medicines (like blood thinners) you may be advised to look for other options. Adding to this, if you have any blood-related issues, you will be asked to not opt for epidural anaesthesia.

How Safe Is It to Use Epidural?

The drugs that are injected into the mother’s system during childbirth also reach the baby’s system. But drugs administered in epidural are known to cause no harm to the kid. Many people assume that epidural births may result in disorders like autism in kids. But the doctors have assured us that there is no such issue one should be bothered about.

Epidurals are known to cause issues of changed blood pressure, delayed second labour, headaches, itching, tearing, etc. The patient is given fluids to resolve the alterations in blood pressure.

47

Allergic reactions and raw handling of the dose may cause complications in the highly successful procedure of epidural. One of the side effects of it is severe headache followed by the procedure, which is very rare but also very uncomfortable.

Rare complications may result in nerve damage, permanent or temporary. If the drug is administered mistakenly into the bloodstream, it may cause severe health issues. But again, do not worry, this is a very effective procedure for most cases, and complications that occur are very rare.

Birth Injuries

Any injury caused during the delivery of the baby can be termed a birth injury. Mild birth injuries are very common and need no medical supervision. But severe injuries during the time of birth may need medical assistance. If serious birth injuries are left unattended, it may cause lifelong defects or disabilities in the newborn.

48

APRIL 2022 | My Child Magazine Issue #127

Epidurals have been known to slow down labour. Let us take a look at how. The baby is pushed by the muscles of the mother. Epidural causes numbing of the muscles of the mother, hence reducing the efficiency with which the mother can push the baby out. Labours have known to be a painful and tiring process for the mother, but we should also keep in mind that it is equally stressful for the baby as well. The reduced efficiency of the mother to push out the baby results in higher chances of birth injuries in an infant.

Pregnancy is no doubt a tough phase, full of highs and lows for a mother. It is very common for mothers to be anxious about birthing. If you are preparing for childbirth, you may consider taking birthing classes and prenatal yoga classes. They very efficiently help the mothers physically and emotionally for delivery.

You can also educate yourself about pregnancy and childbirth in depth. If you are not sure about taking epidural anaesthesia, there are other options available for you. Giving birth to a baby is an extremely important journey for the mother.

Bathing your baby can be a fun and sweet ritual for parents. Babies tend to love water and splashing around in it. So, bathing your baby can also help you bond better with your baby. However, putting your baby into a tub or sink of water does have its own set of risks, and it is imperative that you take necessary steps to prevent any possible mishaps. Even Shallow Water Can Be Dangerous Babies can drown in as little as just a couple of inches of water. Your baby still has very little control of their neck and muscles, so drowning may happen silently and within seconds. They won’t be able to breathe even if a little water covers their mouth and nose. So never leave your baby unattended in the tub, not even for a couple of seconds. Most childhood drownings at homes happen in a tub within the first year of childbirth, so be extra cautious. When To Start Tub Baths Until the umbilical cord has fallen off, stick to sponge baths. If your baby has been circumcised, wait for it to heal as well. After that your little love-bug is ready to hit the tub. 52

APRIL 2022 | My Child Magazine Issue #127

While choosing a tub, go for one with contoured designs, preferably with internal slings to prevent your baby from sliding. Use lukewarm water and check the temperature before placing your baby in the tub. Safety Tips At Home Water safety is something you need to think of as soon as you bring your bundle of joy home. Your baby’s motor skills and movement develop rapidly, and they may start crawling, rolling over or pulling themselves up without any warnings or signs. Here are some tips to help you keep your baby safe from water hazards. Safety In Tub Keep all supplies within your hand’s reach so that you can always have a hand on your baby. Your baby in a tub can be slippery, even a child who seems to be in an upright well propped position can slip down into the water, in a matter of seconds. So always have a hand on your baby and use touch supervision, even if you are using infant seats or slip rings.

53

In case you forget to get a bar of soap or towel or something comes up, take your baby with you. You might think it is a good idea to let an elder sibling supervise the baby, however, understand that they don’t possess the skills to see and react to an emergency. Safety In The Bathroom Bath time’s over, but your work doesn’t; a tub full of water, slippery floors, or even toilet bowls are potential hazards for your baby. You can keep your baby safe by, Putting down the toilet lids. Install safety latches or locks on the lids to keep them curious fingers at bay. Drain the tub after use, also pull the plug out when not in use to prevent it from filling in accidentally. Keep the bathroom door closed. Installing knobs or latches will help keep your baby safe from going into the bathrooms without supervision. Swimming Pools, Ponds & Fountains Swimming pools, even those inflatable above-ground

pools must be covered on all sides with fences. The fences should be effective in keeping your baby out of the pool. Ensure that there are no gaps or openings under the fence and have a self-latching gate that opens away from the pool. Routinely check the gate to be sure that it functions as expected. Apart from pools, you may have other water hazards such as fountains, bird baths, or ponds in your backyard as landscaping features. Be extra attentive when your child is near water. You can also leave these features unused till your child grows up. Scald Risks Apart from hot bath water, there are other hazards that may lead to scalding and burns at home. Coffee or other hot beverages can cause serious scalding if a mug gets pulled down, or spilled on young children or babies. Refrain from carrying hot beverages and your baby at the same time. Avoid placing mugs of hot beverages on the edges of tables or other surfaces. Your curious lovebug may tug at a table cloth in a bid to stand up and could cause serious burn injuries.

FAMILY RITUALS FOR YOUR TODDLER W r i t t e n

B y :

L i z a

J o h n

Finding stability in childhood is a crucial factor in the proper development of a child. While life may get in the way of most things, there are a few ways through which you can maintain a semblance of normalcy in your child’s life. A simple one is by creating or practising family rituals.

Some families have rituals passed on from the earlier generations, while others might have to get creative. However, you choose to do

it, taking part in something together as a family can be one of the best memories you can create with your child.

Importance Of Family Rituals

Be it a secret handshake, a bedtime story, or a religious celebration, family rituals mean a lot more than what you might think it does. In a world filled with constant changes and stress, to your toddler, a family ritual can be the root of identity. Giving them a sense of belongingness and security, family rituals facilitate bonding time and allow you to connect with the family.

When you have a ritual with your toddler, they come to see it as an anchor when something is troubling them. Showing them that the world is a predictable and safe space, rituals, can calm down your toddlers when they are fussy. Especially, bedtime rituals can help you with settling down your child while you are travelling.

So, look for a special activity to do with your child, celebrate a cultural

68

APRIL 2022 | My Child Magazine Issue #127

event, spend some time together before going to bed, come up with a few code words to communicate, your child will appreciate the fun.

Creating Fun Rituals

Taking part in family rituals can sound fun on paper but making it interesting for a toddler can be tricky. Remember to include your toddler the most because they can easily feel left out. Choose something they enjoy doing and ensure that you follow the rituals at regular intervals. Here are some interesting activities you can make a fun family ritual:

Home Videos

Making home videos may not seem like a big deal in this age of smartphones, but this one can be a fun family ritual. Dig out your old camcorder and film your family doing something together. Your toddler will have a novel experience and get to preserve it for later. Get that camera running on birthdays, and vacations, and maybe even make a home film out of it. Secret Handshakes

There is nothing more attractive to toddlers than crazy secret handshakes. Indulge your child here and come up with a handshake that satisfies them. Practice it as a ritual before dropping them off at school, or before you leave for work. The reassurance and joy that this ritual can give your child, is beyond compare.

Gratitude Expression

While managing work and family, parents tend to get ahead of themselves and feel overwhelmed. Journaling is one of the best ways to release a significant amount of accumulated tension. Along with your toddler, sit down and either write down or simply take turns in talking about something you are grateful for. This ritual is a great way to instil the value of gratefulness in your child.

Crafts Time

Fit in some time to be creative as a family and polish your crafts skills. By doing some craftwork and trying to create things with their hands, 70

APRIL 2022 | My Child Magazine Issue #127

your toddler is going to enjoy the benefits of better finger dexterity, intelligence, problem-solving, and creative thinking. Sharing this experience with your toddler is going to make you feel better as well.

Final Thoughts

As much as you wish to carry on with your family rituals without any disruption, circumstances might demand otherwise. Your work schedule can change, your child might have something else demanding their attention as they grow, and there might be many other miscellaneous interruptions to your rituals. The key to dealing with changes effectively is by being accommodating.

Look for ways that you can continue your family rituals. Maybe start a new ritual as time permits, or you can also look for another time for your family rituals when the time is right. However, you deem fit, find ways to spend time with your family and make sure that your child knows that even if you cannot continue with the rituals like before, you can still be there for each other.

SLEEP PROBLEMS IN KIDS W r i t t e n

B y :

L i z a

J o h n

Sleep is an indispensable part of our routine, that is essential to a healthy lifestyle. Research suggests that kids who get enough sleep have heightened attention, improved behaviour, and better overall mental and physical health. On the other hand, lack of sleep has been linked to obesity, high blood pressure, depression, and many other lifestyle problems. Kids need at least 9 to 12 hours of sleep each night. Sleep problems may lead to poor quality and inadequate amounts of sleep. Sleep problems are a rather common occurrence in children, especially the young ones. Bedtime fears, insomnia, sleep apnoea, and sleep walking can all prevent your child from having a natural sleep pattern.

About every 1 in 2 children experience some sort of sleep problems, early detection of these can help deal with the negative consequences better. Signs of Sleep Disorders in Children A lack of sleep causes us to have difficulties managing our moods and affects our state of mind and behaviour. The same applies for children. Children in general might take some time to settle into bed, but if it seems like they are finding it extremely difficult, it could be due to a sleep disorder. Common Scenarios That May Indicate a Sleep Problem Include:

• • •

Your child may ask you for another story, lullaby, or a trip to the bathroom. Your child can’t sleep for more than 90 minutes at a stretch, even at night. Snoring.

Occasional nights of sleeplessness may not be of concern, however if you notice these problems to persist for several nights, it may be indicative of an underlying sleep problem. Children Who Have Sleeping Disorders or Have Inadequate Quality Sleep May Exhibit the Following Signs:

• • • 88

Increased moodiness and irritability Be unruly or troublesome Fail to perform well in academics, below their usual

APRIL 2022 | My Child Magazine Issue #127

• • • •

Be sleepy during the day Fall sick frequently Have depressive thoughts and negative emotions Appear to have difficulty paying attention to conversations and zone out often.

Tips To Improve Your Child’s Sleep Apart from affecting your child’s health, a child who has trouble settling in at night or who keeps waking up in the middle of the night can rob you of your sleep as well. Here are some practical tips you can adapt to help your child sleep better and overcome any sleep disorders they may be facing. Set a Bedtime Choose a regular bedtime and try to stick to it at any cost. Similarly, have a wake-up time in place and do not encourage sleeping in on the weekends or holidays. The timings shouldn’t differ by more than an hour. Relaxing Bedtime Routine A bedtime routine usually comprises two or more activities that get your kid in the frame of mind to go to bed. This could be having a glass of milk, putting on pyjamas, a relaxing shower and a lullaby or reading a story book. What’s important is that these activities are done in the same order every day. The goal is to get your child to slow down into mellow vibes and comfortable to go to bed.

Temperature and Lighting Make sure the temperature in the bedroom is comfortable, not too cold, or hot. Dim the lighting, ideally your child should sleep in a dark room, however if they are scared to sleep in the dark, you can maybe leave a dim light on. Meals and Beverages Large meals close to bedtime should be avoided. A heavy meal close to bedtime, might signal wakefulness to the brain and additionally, leads to the release of insulin, which might shift the circadian rhythm. A general rule of thumb would be to give at least three hours’ time between a meal and bedtime. Do not give your child any food or beverage that contains caffeine close to bedtime. Cut Out Blue Light Stop the television, computer, mobiles, or any other electronic screens at least an hour before bedtime. While using such gadgets close to bedtime, turn on a blue light filter. Studies suggest that the blue light emitted from these screens can delay the onset of sleep. Bottom Line It is common for children to have bedtime terrors, or wet their beds, most usually outgrow these disorders. However, if you feel that your child is really struggling with such sleep disorders do consult a medical practitioner.

NEW DAD SURVIVAL TIPS TO GET YOU THROUGH THE FIRST MONTH W r i t t e n

B y :

L a n c e

G r e e n

First off, congratulations! Being a dad is a major life event for any guy. Having a baby is an exciting and terrifying experience at the same time, kind of like a rollercoaster ride. The first four weeks as a dad can often be the scariest. You might be anxious about what you can do for the baby, or how you can bond with your baby, and a lot of other things. Truth be told, there is a lot to learn. But knowing how to handle your newborn and supporting your partner during the process is all you need to know. Here we have compiled tips, and tricks to help you ease through the first month of this journey. It’s Ok to Be Confused You may not always know what exactly it is that you must do. You might not be informed or experienced enough to handle certain situations that are thrown your way. And that’s okay. Take a deep breath and go with the flow. If you stay open to learning more about how you can be a better parent and partner, you’ll be fine.

Handling Your Finances You don’t need rocket science to know that babies mean a lot of money. Take some time to sit down with your partner and figure out how your baby might affect your finances. Come up with ways in which you can cut down expenses and save a bit more or earn more money. Make a budget that includes the baby’s expenses as well, and don’t forget to save some for the future. Bonding Through Touch Physical touch plays a crucial role in building a bond with your junior. It helps the little one feel safe and secure, while also aiding brain development. Physical touch is also a great way to soothe a crying baby. Pick up the baby and hold them close to your heart until they can hear your heartbeat. Vomiting Don’t try to fight it, the faint smell of slightly cheesy cream is your new scent. Make peace with it. Babies puke, and that’s completely normal, it usually just means that their little tummies are full. But as time goes, you’ll be able to know when your baby is about to vomit, in which case all you have to do is hold your baby at an arm’s length, facing out and let them vomit on to the floor.

Nappy Changes Changing nappies can feel relentless. So, you just took the effort to remove a stinky full diaper, wiped your baby clean and changed the baby into a new diaper, then it happens again. You feel as if your bundle of joy was waiting for you to finish changing the diaper to unload a massive poo. Again, there’s nothing you can do about it, other than accepting reality and keep going. Bye, Bye Sleep It’s time to say goodbye to those good ol’ days when you used to get eight hours of uninterrupted sleep. Yes, your baby is going to be asleep for 12 to 15 hours each day, but unfortunately, they only sleep for an hour or so at a stretch. The best thing you can do is sleep when your baby sleeps. Feeding Your Baby If you aren’t relying on breastfeeding alone to nourish your baby, then you should probably learn how to prepare a bottle of formula before the baby gets home from the hospital. Trust me, you don’t want to wake up your partner at three in the morning and ask them, “Hey Hun, how does this work?”. That said, breastfeeding is the best way to nourish your baby at least.

Be There for Your Partner About 4 in 5 men have express agony about being present during labour, mostly due to the presence of bodily fluids. Well, suck it up, you are going to be alright. In case you need to look away or step out,

present during labour, mostly due to the presence of bodily fluids. Well, suck it up, you are going to be alright. ”

Post-partum depression is a major issue faced by mothers. So, keep a watch for any signs of mental distress on your partner’s side and get them medical help if necessary. Final Thoughts All the poop, vomit, and cries aside, you are still you, don’t forget to give yourself some love. Do things you love and keep up with your hobbies. Connect with other dads that you know and create a space where you can talk about your problems with people that are on the same page as you. If you feel things are going out of hand, don’t hesitate to call for help.

KEEPING YOUR RELATIONSHIP SPICY AFTER MARRIAGE W r i t t e n

B y :

L i z a

J o h n

Let’s face it, at some point after marriage all couples have to deal with this, losing the spark. You must have heard that life completely changes after marriage. Couples who were once madly in love find themselves going through a boring, dull, family centred routine which leads you to a point where you don’t even know if together.

When you get into a relationship, the butterflies when you see them, the excitement while you wait for a text, the magic in a kiss, everything seems like straight out of a happily-ever-after film. Except that it isn’t, this newness fades away after a while. This passionate love turns into a more compassionate love. You and your partner start to divulge your true selves and form a deep emotional attachment. You start to have a sort of stability and comfort in your life. However, along the way you may also stumble, with life throwing obstacles your way and renewing that passionate love can seem like an arduous task. So here are some tips from experts and real people on how to keep your relationship spicy after marriage: Revive Remember when you bumped into each other at the college library, there on you used to visit the library just to get a glimpse of her? Go back, go to that library, revisit your memories. Maybe you don’t

have a library, maybe you met at a trek, go on that trek again. Do those things that helped you fall in love with each other. Revive those memories and moments. Kiss again, like it is the first time all over again. Make love, like it was the first time. Go on a walk through the city or cook together, these activities can help you revive those butterflies in your stomach. The important thing is that you try and make an effort, don’t say you’ll do it and then forget about it. Even a little effort can go a long way. Be Adventurous While reviving the old activities, don’t forget to try new ones. Be adventurous, take risks with your partner to keep things interesting. Push each other to do something absolutely crazy (PS: stay safe, folks). It is going to be scary, but you have each other’s support to help you push through. Adventure sports and activities that are a mix of the terrifying and

exhilarating will work to increase the bond that you have with your partner. So yes, take that terrifying rollercoaster ride or go skydiving, these will help your body to release chemicals that take your bond to a higher level. Go On Dates Remember when you started dating, how you used to go on a ton of dates? Now it’s probably come down to something close to a ritual than actually enjoying the time you’re spending together on a date. Try to have a date night once a week, or at least once a month. Keep things interesting and come up with something different, like trying a new cuisine or trying out a new restaurant in town. Spend quality time together, doing things you both love, regularly. Dress up and try to impress your partner as if you’re going out on your first date with them.

102

APRIL 2022 | My Child Magazine Issue #127

Intimacy The word intimacy is often associated to just physical intimacy, yes physical intimacy is necessary, but that’s not all that matters. Create a judgment free space where the both of you can open up without hesitation. Ask questions, try to get to know your partner on a deeper level and try to understand them. Never think that you know your partner inside out, they are changing just like you, so be there for them by their side. Speaking of physical intimacy, yes, make love like you were doing it for the last time, break the beds and do it with passion. Talk to each other about your preferences and try to break each other’s boundaries (as long as they are also willing to try new things) to keep your intimate life wild and exciting. Touching, cuddling, and teasing can help release happy hormones in your body and help you connect with each other on a deeper level. Final Thoughts In long term relationships, it is natural for you to start taking your partner for granted. APRIL 2022 | My Child Magazine Issue #127

life in the demanding lane WRITTEN BY: SHEREE HODDINETT

Did you know I’m a rubbish bin? As well as a broom, vacuum cleaner, servant and any other title you want to throw at me. We all know that life as a parent means we have a fair bit of responsibility for the little people in our lives. But when they reach a certain age of independence (don’t ask me exactly what it is, could be 1, 4 or even 10), there should be a point of recognition where they take some responsibility for themselves, right?! Wrong! Oh, except when they want to be independent and you are the worst parent in the world for not letting them have their own way, that’s just a different league of its own. I know I’m raising mini versions of myself. They have sass and attitude that will keep them going for life. I just don’t need it thrown at me on a daily basis. Or ever really. Just remember we as parents, don’t know anything. We couldn’t possibly understand what it’s like to be a kid, because we never were one apparently. While we grew up in an era long before social media ruled the world and everyone’s lives, we still had the experience of being a kid. The joys of getting out and having fun and then the downside of being told no when we desperately asked for something. Not really sure much has changed in that aspect of growing up. I don’t think the word no will be disappearing from our vocabulary somehow. There’s no denying the world sure is a different place now to when I was a kid. We knew war and poverty existed but it wasn’t thrust into our faces so freely and bullying has taken on a whole new level to what it once was. Don’t even get me started on Covid. When I was my eldest daughter’s age, the biggest sickness getting around (from what I remember) was chicken pox and everyone wanted to be infected to get it over and done with! If only things were that simple now. But if anything, it certainly shows how resilient kids still are and that’s one thing that never seems to change throughout the generations.
