HAPTIC MEMORIES Architectural Thesis (In Progress)
The Seminole Tribe of Florida (STOF), otherwise referred to as 'The Unconquered People', remains one of the most indomitable tribes in the history of the United States. Having persevered through the Indian Removal Act of 1830, the Trail of Tears, three Seminole Wars, and the ever-dynamic culture crash imposed by the settlers, the Seminole Indians have remained determined to hold onto their cultural identity and memories. Through an understanding of perceptual theory, and phenomenology, this thesis investigates how collective memories enrichened with topophilic connections can be translated into an embodied space of haptic experience.

Perfectly stitching together district of Old Oakland's unique urban fabric, The Stitch is a mixed-income and use community seeking to build the connections servicing the Greater Oakland through establishing the Old Oakland neighborhood as a key node in the city's transportation infrastructure and cultural fabric. Through proposing a transit hub that connects the community to the surrounding region, maintaining critical elements of Oakland's diverse history and integrating them into the built urban environment, the proposed development will culminate in a vibrant living experience that benefits the workers, residents and visitors as they seek to enjoy Oakland.

OAK LAND'S HERITAGE ON DISPLAY The Stitch unites the many identities and communities that call this city home and provides them with an iconic space to express their diversity in the built environment. Forming the backbone of the development is the 0.3 mile pedestrian corridor running below the Nimitz Freeway features a market space and community amenities that combine a new economic driver filled with opportunities to strengthen cultural resources in the region. The projects intends to create a social space where local independent businesses can thrive and plant lasting roots through job creation and investment that empowers the people of Oakland to both define their own future while paying homage to the city's past and present.

REIMAGINED OVERPASS
The BART line transitions underground just southwest of the site. A new underground BART station is envisioned directly below the highway in addition to a bus depot, with several exits into the site and intervention.
The overpass is transformed into a vibrant hub of activity through artist initiatives. Street art takes center stage along a dedicated art walk with graffiti walls reflecting Oakland's diverse art culture. The Stitch becomes a confluence of creativity.

THE GREEN THREAD
The structure of the highway, which in its existing state is a barrier is utilized to create protected public spaces, feeding into the creation of more intimate moments within the exterior fabric. The idea of woonerfs further prioritize pedestrian friendly spaces.
Green spaces thread from one side of the highway to the other, stitching together the urban fabric on both sides. A proposed green corridor to west of the site aims to connect visitors to the upcoming Oakland A's baseball stadium, thereby fostering the connections to the waterfront.

BURNET CHAPEL Proposed Structure
Nestled into the serene woodland setting of Burnet and providing a sweeping view of the lake, this chapel is a proposed structure in collaboration with the local church of Cincinnati. The structure aims to be an open structure for anyone seeking an escape or a place of meditation. The project is currently in its schematic design phase with the intention to propose the design to the respective organizations in the near future. The Burnet Chapel will be located in close proximity to the University of Cincinnati Main Campus.

TRANSFIGURED MEMORIES Honorable Mention, Lyceum Fellowship
Angel Island, in the San Francisco Bay, was home to the West Coast Immigration Station, which was built in 1905. Unlike Ellis Island, new arrivals were housed in barracks on the island under difficult conditions. Until the station’s closure in 1940, the island was seen as a mechanism to exile immigrants in a rather geopolitical limbo - there was never a monumental Statue of Liberty welcoming them. Channeling the spirit of its east coast counterpart, this competition presented the opportunity to design a welcoming place of sanctuary in the form of a new arrival center on Angel Island for new immigrants as well as a place of reflection for past immigrants and the communities within which they now live.

Cradled in a unique site surrounded by ephemeral elements like water beneath the feet and the skies above, this sanctuary is designed to guide the visitors in an act of self-reflection. Being an architectural pilgrimage starting at the pier (resonating with the past events on site - a threshold), making its way to the beacon which translates memories and dreams into a sensory stimulation through the use of cloudscapes as a tool of transfiguration; Thereby placing the mind in a state of ecstasy,

which derives itself both from the depth of the memory and also from personal convictions. Anyone and everyone has an impactful story to convey. By sculpting a state of anonymity and proclamation through the use of ever changing cloudscapes, this intervention becomes an architectural reserve of memories; a database filled with the most intimate moment of both citizens and immigrants who choose to tell their story.

DECIPHERING MEMORIES The genesis of this sanctuary came from envisioning a place, where both the citizens and immigrants alike can expound on their story. A place where one’s most intimate instances of time are told publicly, yet anonymously. The transient medium of clouds to decipher the memories helps bind together the metaphysical connection. Through machine learning of the cognitive functions, the sublime connection between technology and human intimacy is brought to life. To be a sanctuary of everyone’s memories, for time to come.

This is an EEG (Electroencephalography) chart which records the neurosignals in the brain. It is the raw data of memories that is read and translated.

ENGRAM Any pivotal memories in life revolves around emotions. In here, people are encouraged to document their story by recollecting long term memories and dreams. These memories are in turn anonymously recorded in minutes using a 32 bit channel EEG headset which scan the neurosignals produced inside the brain.
PRO CESS The neurosignals evoked by the memories result in emotions which are transduced into binary signals as height fields. This data is relayed to sensors placed in the architecture.
TRANSLATE The incoming signals form the cloudscapes by imitating the emotion. The signals control the hot dry, cold dry and humid air needed to form the transient elements. Interacting with these clouds become a poetic engagement with your memory. Different memories evoke different moods, and that state of mind is evident in the cloudscapes through their form, speed and the way in which light interacts with it.

The beacon (sanctuary) is designed to appear as a sublime form gently rising from the water. What was once a threshold of trials and tribulations for many immigrants, is now a place for contemplation and sharing of personal narratives.

Alabaster is used as the ‘crown’ for the sanctuary. A material which embraces and embodies light; far and wide for anyone and everyone to feel its warm presence.

M O N U M E N TA L M E M O I R Finalist, National Competition 'Monument Avenue'
This proposal is a re-imagination of the historic ‘Monument Avenue’ boulevard which is located in Richmond, Virginia. This 5.4 mile urban connector holds itself close to controversies and public outrage due to the confederate statues lining the long boulevard. We aim for this intervention to re-contextualize and dissolve inherent bias by completing the controversial monuments with historical context.

Filling the site with context will broaden perspectives and shift the focus of the avenue from the existing monuments to the entirety of Virginia’s richer history.
Monuments are excellent for immortalizing figures or events in history, however they continually fail to communicate multiple points of view and inherent biases of the groups that erect them. Monument Avenue represents an increasingly outdated and unpopular viewpoint Celebrating figures of a quelled rebellion. Despite this issue, the monuments are historic and significant in contemporary culture and therefore should not be simply removed. Instead, it should be the goal of Richmond to eliminate

bias and promote alternative perspectives. With the re-design, the entire boulevard is turned into a chronological time-line in where the abundant history of Virginia and its capital will be celebrated and confronted by the visitors. The time-line begins prior to the founding of Jamestown and covers 500 years with about every mile representing a new century. The existing monuments will be moved or erected according to their chronological moments in time

The intervention occupies the median as a scaffold like structure (see above render) to accommodate additions to the time-line. It is built up around the monuments, enveloping them so that the visitors can confront them from multiple intimate points of view. In the heart of fully embracing the culture and history, not just veterans, but monuments of Virginians with extraordinary talents will be added
to the boulevard over the course of time. Along the promenade, and around the monuments, the structure may be filled with screens, artifacts, plaques, speakers, or other forms of presentation that exhibit the history in an immersive and interactive manner; slowly populating ‘Monument Avenue’ into a 5.4 mile, interactive encyclopedia covering 500 years of Virginian stories.

DANCING RO CK Single-Family Residential
Dancing Rock is an extension to an existing single family residential (left) providing expansive views of the Catskill mountains. True to the characteristics of the region, the additional massing which functions as a guest house aims to supplement the atmosphere of the site and context through the use of curated rustic palette. The steep pitch gives the home a modern child-like character and provided an opportunity for a gracious vaulted space on the interior supplemented by a loggia. The project is still in progress and just entered the design development phase.

TH E THRESHOLD Cincinnati Masonry Research Institute

The door is often considered to be the handshake of the building. This project is an exploration of that idea; understanding what makes the threshold special. Since this is a vignette from the ongoing studio project, which is a masonry research 37
institute in Cincinnati Over-the-Rhine area, material research played a huge part in this design. The tactile qualities of materials combined with the refined geometry within the tectonics was largely inspired by studying the works of Carlo Scarpa and Louis Kahn.
The door is designed to be as pure as possible in its tectonics. It is a 19.5 ft center pivoting door playing on the concept of expansion and compression when passing through this threshold and into the building. Materials of ephemeral quality were heavily considered - the experience of touching waterstruck coal fired bricks, and pitted blackened steel finish that develops a patina over time pays a homage to the industrial age of Cincinnati.

C A S A D E PA Z Historic Preservation
This project was focused on documenting several historical structures of significance in the Greater Cincinnati region. The building in dialogue is a mid 19th century Italianate House acquired lately by St. Bernard Church. Hoping to convert it to a nunnery, the preservation survey and analysis was a preliminary requirement and a distilled version of the Historic American Building Survey Report (HABS) was a deliverable for the course. My role was to survey the exterior of the building, assist in CAD and analyze the interior finishes and mechanical systems of the building.

Visualization is a trinity of photography, fine-art, and architectural design. Over the past year, I had the opportunity to attend a course at the academy (State of Art Academy), dealing with the history and craft of visualization. During my time there, I got to study the works of the early masters like Canaletto and Bernardo Bellotto and contempories like Vittorio Storaro and Roger Deakins. Those studies have inspired me to enter the world of architecture visualization - To create the portraits of unbuilt structures using this tool of communication.

MINIMALIST Short photo essay capturing New York City architecture through the lens of fine-art minimalism. It evolved into an exploratory study of using the concept of ‘chiaroscuro’.
