L SALVADOR Cristian lives in the mountainous community of Chinameca, home to approximately 45,000 residents. Typical houses are constructed of dirt floors, adobe walls and zinc roofs. The population is comprised of Mestizos and the most commonly spoken language is Spanish. The regional diet consists of maize, beans, bread, plantains, rice, potatoes, eggs and yucca. Common health problems in this area include respiratory infections and intestinal illnesses. Most adults in Chinameca work as day laborers and earn the equivalent of $137 per month. This community has basic utility services but needs vocational training, law enforcement and drug rehabilitation programs. The staff of CDI Chinameca provides Cristian with Bible teaching, medical and dental checkups, vaccinations, birthday celebrations, sewing and computer classes, academic support and scholastic materials. The center staff also provides meetings for the parents or guardians of Cristian.
